Evans Autobody, Flookburgh expands to new larger purpose built premises. In 2001 at the age of 21 Lee Evans a local Flookburgh lad took the plunge and started on his own carrying out vehicle body repairs in a small rented 75sq mtr farm unit on cark airfield.

Lee soon got a name for doing a good job to which his reputation started to grow over the years.

In 2004 Lee moved into another farm unit on Cark airfield just over double the size of his present unit and he bought himself a second hand spray oven to speed up the drying process of paintwork. As the business got busier lee employed an apprentice to help him along the way of growing the business. As time went on the reputation of Evans Autobody was growing and Lee and his apprentice were becoming extremely busy with work so Lee decided to expand the unit he rented and also buy a second spray oven and employ a paint spray technician to help keep up with the amount of workflow they were getting through. As time went on and work got busier by 2011 Evans Autobody had a team of 4 staff and by 2012 Evans Autobody was growing at a excellent rate and now consisted of 5 staff. As Evans Autobody’s reputation grew they started to build a relationship repairing damaged vehicles for Batemans Toyota and Hadwins VW/Audi then soon after they were also repairing vehicles for Batemans BMW.

TESTIMONIAL Over recent years Lee has restored my 1976 Mg Midget, 1989 Audi 100 and more recently my 1994 Range Rover,

Evans Autobody has become a preferred choice for many local people and businesses due to the professional high standard of work carried out and also their excellent customer service and continues to keep a good relationship with all private and trade customers. In 2015 Lee bought 1 acre of a field 3/4 mile down moor lane on the left hand side of the road with the intention to build a large purpose built accident repair centre. Lee applied for Planning permission but this was a rejected as the planners would not allow for building on this plot but lee not being one to let anything beat him fought the decision and eventually in 2016 was granted permission to build the new workshop he dreamed of since starting in business in 2001. October 2017 Evans Autobody’s new purpose built 700sq mtr unit is now officially open for business and has a fully qualified team of 9 staff, 12 vehicle bays, 1 valeting bay and 3 spray ovens.

The biggest challenge was the restoration of my Range Rover, which once he dismantled it need some extra work, but true to his word he finished at 4 pm on the day he said he would. And at the agreed price . All through the project he kept me informed , invited me to look at his work and finally when the job was complete , furnished me with a set of photos from start to finish.( nice touch) The work was done to a very high standard and the compliments I get over it’s condition should make Lee very proud. I know how hard Lee works and his success is a testament to his never ending quest to please his customers and give them their cars back in perfect condition and in the time scale he promises.

Lees new premises are are sign of his professionalism and I am sure he will go from strength to strength .

I know I’m not the only person who wishes Lee all the success in the future, and if anyone is in doubt about where to take their beloved cars after a scrape or if they want just honest professional advice they need look no further . Good luck Lee, Richard English The Cavendish Arms Cartmel

Over the coming months we hope to address other areas such as health and exercise and financial planning. Perhaps you would like to contribute? If so please get in touch. Equally if you wish to write a letter in relation to this month’s article then please do so. Other important dates for the diary include the Remembrance Service events - please see page 6. Investment Matters

By Andrew Troughton APFS

This tax year saw the launch of the Lifetime ISA, which is the latest addition to the ISA family. Like all ISA’s they come in two varieties; cash and stocks and shares ISA’s The Lifetime ISA, which has inevitably become known as the LISA is a new addition that could be a very attractive investment for certain investors. The main features of the LISA are: • You can only open a LISA if you are aged under 40 and at least 18. The maximum contribution is £4,000 per tax year, which counts towards your overall £20,000 ISA contribution limit. • The Government tops up any LISA contribution made before age 50 with a 25% bonus; if you contribute the maximum £4,000 you will gain a £1,000 top up. • As with all ISA’s, any gains and income accumulate free of UK tax during the investment period. • Withdrawals made to help

finance a first time purchase of a home valued at up to £450,000 (made at least 12 months after the LISA was opened) or once you have reached age 60 can be made without penalty. • Withdrawals made for other purposes other than those mentioned above will be subject to a flat 25% penalty. • Up until 5th April 2018, funds held in a Help to Buy ISA can be transferred to a LISA and gain the 25% bonus. As you can see from the main features above, it is important to consider how and when you may use the funds accrued in a LISA, as withdrawals subject to the 25% penalty will apply to both capital invested and any growth achieved. With the potential changes to the dividend tax allowance from April 2018/19, whether or not you qualify for a LISA or whether or not the LISA is the right investment for you, the tax advantages of investing in an ISA, where you can now invest up to £20,000 per person, should not be overlooked.

Give a little box of hope this Christmas It is time to put together your shoebox for this year’s appeal. We have said it before but I think it’s worth repeating, these children get literally nothing but your shoebox for Christmas. Many of them live in the most appalling conditions and your little shoebox of treats may be the only gift they ever receive.

Please make sure your box contains educational supplies such as pens and pencils, toys (such as dolls, cars and tennis balls), sweets and hygiene items such as face cloths and soap. We all know children love to have fun! Children and adults alike love to fill a shoebox – it is a simple and fun thing to do, doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, and it really does make a difference to a child who has none

Don’t forget to buy presents for your furry & feathery friends. We do vouchers that are great for all pet & wild bird lovers. We have a big selection of special Christmas gifts in stock for all pets & we mustn’t forget our pets at Christmas as well as our usual selection of beautiful beds, toys etc. We are also do some special gifts such as candles, wild bird hampers etc which are perfect for Christmas.

Friends at Christmas are organising their 11th annual Christmas Day lunch this year. Held on Christmas Day, it is open to anyone in Grange who would otherwise be on their own at Christmas. Christmas comes to Grange This is certainly going to be the year that Christmas comes to Grange. As reported last month, Grange Town Council, are providing fabulous new Christmas lights for the town and, as our photographs show, they really are going to look magical. Grange Mayor, Councillor Peter Endsor, along with his elf helpers, will be out and about the first week in November to persuade businesses to buy a fully lit Christmas tree to complete the festive look. At the modest cost of £22 per tree, which includes lights, batteries, fixing and dismantling, there really is no excuse not to. Cumbria County Council has very kindly agreed to allow Grange Chamber of trade and Grange Town Council to host this year’s Christmas market on Grange library car park. This will take place on Saturday 2nd December and will open at 10am. The Methodist Church and The United Reformed Church are both holding coffee mornings and selling Christmas wares and crafts and although

the tree festival doesn’t open until the following weekend, St Paul’s are also opening their doors and will also have Christmas treats for sale. The annual charity Christmas Fair will take place in Victoria Hall between 2pm and 6pm.

The 71st annual tree lighting will take place at 6pm and this year the lights will be switched on by former Cartmel Priory School pupil, actress Molly McGlynn, who has recently appeared in Coronation Street. Following the lighting Santa will be giving out sweets to the children and will then make his way up Main Street and onto Kents Bank Road, lighting up the streets as he goes.

Mayor’s report

OUT OF ORDER!

Grange Mayor, Councillor Peter Endsor, was delighted to be invited to Grange Lions lunch. President, David Khan and his fellow Lions, totalling 70 members, are celebrating their centenary this year.

Sometime between 7am 7.30am on the morning of Wednesday 11th October, the public toilets on the prom and the Ornamental Gardens were broken into. The thief managed to force the coin boxes from the doors, leaving bare wires and Grange Town Council were forced to temporarily close them. The toilets have now been re-opened.

Remembrance Service dates

On Wednesday 8th November, there will be a rehearsal for Standard Bearers and Wreath carriers at St Paul’s Church, Grange at 5pm. On Saturday 11th, there will be a short Service of Remembrance at the war memorial at 10.55am. On Sunday 12th November, the Remembrance Service will take place at St Paul’s Church, Grange and following that, at approximately 3pm, there will be a parade, led by Flookburgh Band, to the War Memorial in the Ornamental Gardens for laying of wreaths. Refreshments will be served in Victoria Hall afterwards.

Introducing The Bowen Technique Bowen Technique is a unique and effective form of body therapy that has shown tremendous benefit in helping a range of conditions. Using subtle but precise moves over muscle/ nerve/connective tissue, it releases tightened muscles and stimulates the healing process within the body. It can be used to help common physical problems like back, neck and shoulder pain as well as hip, knee, ankle and foot problems and can also help with headaches, respiratory problems, bowel problems and hormonal conditions along with emotional conditions such as depression, stress and anxiety. It is based on the work of the late Tom Bowen, who found that by restoring balance to the tissues of the body, the underlying cause of many health or pain problems could be addressed and the body would be able to heal itself. The Procedure A Bowen session is is very relaxing. It consists of a

series of targeted moves with the fingers and thumbs over precise areas of the body including muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves. These moves are gentle and yet profound and aim to release tightened muscles and restore balance to the body. For example an imbalance in the pelvis can result in pain felt in other areas of the body that may be alleviated by restoring balance to the pelvis. Each treatment is tailored to the individual. For more information or to make an appointment, please contact your local qualified Bowen Technique Practitioner, Nicky Guy. Full details can be found on her advert.

County Matters Cumbria County Council is on track to meet its waste recycling and composting targets, boosting the environment and saving the council money.

Latest performance figures presented to a recent meeting of the County Council’s Cabinet show the council is on track to recycle or compost at least 60% of all waste taken to its 14 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) throughout the county including the one in Grange. HWRCs accept a wide range of household items, from garden waste and scrap metal to timber, plastic and electrical appliances. At the Macmillan coffee morning held in Grange Library on 29th September a presentation was made to three Volunteers County wide for their 5 year commitment to the Macmillan Cancer Information Project. I am happy to announce one of those volunteers came from Grange and all our thanks and congratulations go to Thelma Lambert. It was a wonderful

morning of tea and cakes and my thanks go to all for attending the volunteers and the Library staff for hosting the event.

At a recent meeting of the Integrated Care Community at Grange Library a presentation from a Parkinson’s help worker was well received and informed us all on the difficulty of people dealing with this disease.

Our next meeting of this Group will be Monday 27th November, Grange Library 6.30pm till 8pm

Join us for a Conversation on working together to improve the well being in your community. If you can spare 90 minutes and would like to be part of this community group, come and join us to talk about what is already in our community that helps people to be happy and healthy and how we can build on this. Refreshments will be available and if you need further information please contact Carol Last on 01539 713180 or email her on carol. last@cumbria.gov.uk

Carpets are the filters for our homes They trap the dust and other airborne allergens that would otherwise be floating around in the air we breathe.

Whilst regular vacuuming of our carpets removes most of these allergens from the surface, over time, some of this stuff gets deep rooted within the pile of the carpet and only a professional deep clean will get rid of it.

For a cleaner and healthier home, make it a point to regularly have your carpets and rugs deep cleaned. While it’s a chore to do it yourself, deep cleaning of your carpets is something that should never be neglected.

For best results, you can always seek help from a professional carpet cleaning company like Revive Carpet Cleaning. We make thorough carpet cleaning fast and easy at very reasonable prices. Carpets are usually dry within 30 minutes of cleaning and we move your furniture too.

We also clean upholstery, including leather.

The photos show an example of what we can achieve, the first one was taken part way through the clean to show the difference as the job progressed, the second, the final result. We hope you agree that there is an amazing improvement.

So grab your pinny and get baking.” If you would like to enter there are six categories: Savoury pastries, scones, biscuits, traybakes, cupcakes and large cakes. Jean’s challenge went swimmingly Grange Now has been following Jean Malkin’s progress on her attempt to swim 70 lakes and tarns in this, her 70th year, and we’re delighted to report that she’s done it. Jean, often accompanied by her children and grandchildren, and always by husband, Mick, set about her challenge with great enthusiasm.

She told Grange Now, “Since January 1st, I have seen so many changes of weather, but I’m very pleased to say the final one was on a beautiful sunny day. We shared the fun with all ten of our lovely family at Bortree Tarn. Numbers 69 and 70 are reported to be the deepest lake and one of the highest tarns in the Lake District. “Wastwater was swum on the 23rd August and Sprinkling Tarn, at around 2,000ft. on the approach to Great End and Scafell Pike, was swum on the following cloudy, rainy morning.” “We had to re-think the last swim, as we decided that No.35, Leece Tarn, had to be discounted as it was little more than a ‘duck pond’. A family of

ducklings actually visited as the swim was made! “The most exciting day and swim has to be the climb through thick snow to get to Grisedale Tarn, at the foot of Dollywaggon Pike. The warmest and most beautiful was Blea Tarn on the pass which connects Little and Great Langdale.” Jean would like to thank everyone who sponsored her and would also like to say how grateful she is for all

the marvellous support she received from friends around the district. Jean’s challenge has resulted in over £1,500 being raised for Jigsaw Children’s Hospice and Action for Children. Well done Jean and Happy Birthday.

Residents contribute nearly 800 meals to Foodbank Grange residents were, once again, incredibly generous with their contributions for the recent Foodbank collection. Organisers would like to thank those who helped and those who donated; 321.5 kg of food was sent to Foodbank which equates to 766 meals. The main users of Foodbank are families on low income, and those suffering delays in receiving benefits. The vouchers are authorised by front-line professionals, eg doctors, health visitors, social workers, police, and strict anti-fraud measures are in place to prevent the system being abused. In the past year, 65 tonnes of food were given out, and 7500 individuals were fed. Dieticians check regularly to ensure that the packages are nutritionally balanced.

The foodbank acts also as a social hub, where clients are given a warm welcome and a cuppa. In addition to the food packages, stocks of nappies, baby food, and sanitary ware are available and rucksacks filled with essentials are given to the homeless. Since November 2016, fuel vouchers (not cash) have been issued (funded by NPower) where families use prepayment meters. Up to March 2017 665 vouchers had been issued.

Grange now | NOVEMBER 2017 - Next deadline 17th NOVEMBER

Volunteers are always needed – please contact Ann Mills, project manager, on 01229 343436, or visit their web site www. barrowfoodbank.org.uk. It is also possible to set up a standing order for any regular monetary donation, with the option of claiming gift aid. An idea that came up recently on Facebook was for an alternative advent calendar: find a basket or a box and each day from the 1st December you add one item of food. By the time Christmas comes you will have a good parcel to donate to the foodbank! We can arrange transport. Our next regular collection is Sunday, 3rd December, Father Magner Room, St Charles Church, Grange.

Tim’s column MPs are back at work in the House of Commons. The downside of this is that I am spending less time at home in Milnthorpe with Rosie and the children but the upside is that I get better access to Government ministers. The following are the things that I have been chasing them on this month. Trains. As I have already written in Grange Now there was on average about one train a day cancelled on the Furness Line this summer. This is frankly unacceptable. Currently the train operating company is expecting an increase in fares of over 3% in January. This is wrong. I have been in contact with the Transport Secretary asking for him to link fares and service levels rather than simply to the level of inflation. Education. The Government is currently proposing to cut spending on schools in Westmorland and Lonsdale by £2.6 million by 2020. That will in effect lead to the loss of 58 teachers across the area. This at a time when as far as I know there are no projected declines in our population. We have already seen one school in the area close and it is inevitable that more will come under pressure. The result of this is that the education of our children will suffer. I have been in contact with the Secretary of State for Education demanding she reconsiders her plans and puts the education of children ahead of everything. Health. I have relaunched my campaign to get a Radiotherapy Unit at the hospital in Kendal. In 2015 we got commitment from the Treasury Minister to £12 million for the unit but as soon as the new Government came in they cancelled that. Meanwhile people are having to travel 2 – 3 hours a day to get the treatment they need to save their lives. This is simply cruel. If you want to support the campaign or want my help with anything else please email me at tim@timfarron.co.uk or call on 01539 723 403. Thanks for your support Tim

ART & MUSIC

Artiste of the month Sylvia Trohear and Sue Harrison

Grange resident, Sylvia Trohear’s love of music began at a very early age.

She said during a talk she gave in 2015, “I wonder how my life would have developed if Mrs Starkey, a tall gracious lady, had not asked my mother, when I was four, if she could take my brother and I to Sunday School, where I became a member of the choir”. Or if she hadn’t, ‘on a whim’ asked for piano lessons at the age of eight? Sylvia is known to many of you locally for her beautiful piano playing and she often accompanies her daughter, Sue and Victor Hindle but she is a very accomplished singer herself. As a soloist, Sylvia was able to sing the contralto solos in most of the oratorios: Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Mozart’s Requiem, Brahms’ Requiem, Verdi’s Requiem, Bach’s St John’s Passion and St Matthew’s Passion. Most of these performances were with an orchestra which she said, “added an extra dimension to these wonderful works”. In 1968, when she was 28, Sylvia joined the Staveley Gilbert & Sullivan Society and was part of a large membership which produced a very successful opera every September. She told us, “my favourite lead role was

that of Katisha in The Mikado and, incidentally, Derek Roberts was Pooh-Bah in that particular production.”

In the early 1970’s, Sylvia became a founder member of ‘Keldwyth Singers’, a handpicked group of singers and the brainchild of Reg Griffiths. Sylvia first met Reg when she joined Windermere Choral Society and she told me that Reg was another big influence in her life of music. Reg founded the Keldwyth Award, which is still going today, and the final is held in Victoria Hall. Sylvia has now retired from solo singing but she told us, “I still very much enjoy accompanying people on the piano, especially Sue and I’m very grateful to have had music in my life. Music has given me many friends in my life and many moments of exquisite music for which I am eternally grateful”. Sue Harrison

Sylvia’s daughter, Sue, has clearly inherited a love of music from her mum but while Sylvia is a fan of choral music Sue’s passion is the musicals. A member of Ambleside Choir Grange Community Choirand the Grange URC choir, Sue is a very talented singer but sadly nerves have held her back a little in the past. She told us, “I did enter the Mary

Wakefield and Ulverston Festival but unfortunately nerves really do affect your voice when you’re singing so I didn’t really do myself justice but I did come second!”

There were no nerves in evidence when Sue joined Flookburgh Band for the Last Night of the Proms concert in Victoria Hall in August of this year. Everyone who was fortunate enough to attend could not praise Sue’s singing highly enough. Like her mum, Sue was a member of Keldwyth Singers, which she joined when she was only 16. She has also appeared on stage for Flookburgh Operatic Society, Flookburgh Gilbert and Sullivan Society and Lakeland Singers, which came about after Keldwyth Singers folded following the death of Reg Griffiths. She sang at her step-dad’s wedding, when Sylvia married her second husband, Irving, at Grange United Reformed Church. Several years ago Sylvia, Sue and Victor Hindle formed a trio who now play and sing all over the district and who have raised thousands of pounds for charity over the years. Although always very busy, if you would like to book Sylvia or Sue or all three you can contact them on the following numbers: Victor on 33211, Sylvia on 32910 or Sue on 58937

We’re sorry to report that on Thursday 5th October, Sylvia was involved in a nasty car accident which required her to be cut out of her car by the fire brigade. She is recovering at home and we’re thankful to report that she’s doing well. We all wish her a speedy recovery.

Singing the Blues The newly formed Victoria Hall Support Group (VHSG) are certainly working very hard to raise funds for the Hall and their latest idea is a bold and exciting one. On Saturday 4th November, they will open up the hall for a day, and night, of Jazz and Blues. The daytime session, with free admission, kicks off at 11am and lunch and snacks will be served all day from 11.30am. The music starts at 11.30am with jazz trio, ‘Out of the Blue’ who many of you may have seen perform on the prom. They will play until 1.30pm and will be followed by buskers and ‘open mic’ session. Blues at the Vic Robin May will be your host for The Blues

and you can enjoy an evening of fantastic blues courtesy of Charlie Westney, Freddie Buchanan, Felix Bellingham, Colin Salter, Ben Steel, George Elsbury and Jack Spencer. Refreshments in the form of Real Cask Ale by Unsworth Yard Micro Brewery, the Gin Bar, Wine Bar and soft drinks will be available all evening. Tickets are very moderately priced at £15 per person and include, not just the fabulous music, but also a mouthwatering Italian buffet provided by Thyme Out Restaurant. On the grapevine Following on from recent comedy performances and anniversary exhibitions, Grange Drama members are looking forward to the first of their Winter Play Readings. The opening script is set in the “never had it so good” years of the Swinging Sixties, when post war politicians were

making headline news. Kath Bolton will lead ‘A Letter of Resignation’, written by Hugh Whitemore, a play which introduces audiences to the unknown domestic life of Harold Macmillan, a Prime Minister whose private life was unhappy and scarred by sexual betrayal. This is the story of an Edwardian grandee who could not come to terms with the era of E

type Jaguars, Carnaby Street and Beatlemania. The reading will take place in Grange Institute on Thursday 16 November at 7.30 pm. There is no charge for these sessions which are open to members, readers and listeners alike. For more information about this or future play readings please go to the Grange Drama website.

Inspiring textiles exhibition at Beach Hut ‘Warp and Weft’ is the latest collection of works at Beach Hut Gallery. It features the work of Cumbrian artists Sue Deakin, Jane Mallinson, Priscilla Edwards, Helen Entwisle and visitor, Rachel Wright, Fabrics and yarns are the mediums used in creating these beautiful and intriguing pieces. Based in Grange, Helen Entwisle has a new range of work ‘On the Ledge’ which focuses on plant-life within the home, shelves containing flora in an array of decorative pots. As with all of Helen’s work there is a strong midcentury influence, an era when house plants become

Prom Art has a very successful season This outdoor event increases in popularity year on year and organisers said 2017 saw over sixty exhibitors with some coming from as far as Keswick, Carlisle and Burnley.

As with all outdoor events, you are at the mercy of the weather but thanks to a last minute mid-July event, all six events went ahead this year and judging by the crowds this event certainly lives up to its title of, ‘largest arts and crafts fair in the North West’.

Organisers told Grange Now, “Our closing event at the end of September saw a number of ‘young artists’ who took part in a children’s painting competition which turned out to be very popular and much fun was had by all. We are already working on our 2018 season which promises to be even more exciting and the first event will be held on the last Sunday in April (29th)- see you there”.

The weather has probably become as bad as it is going to get so there’s not a great deal of action on the allotment this month. You might have the odd brassica left to harvest which you should cover with netting to stop pigeons from nipping at them; weigh or peg these down securely or it can be carried away by the winter

Ash dieback Ash dieback has been in the news for around five years now, however it has been known for about twenty.

Ash dieback is a fungal spore carried by the wind, infecting the ash and eventually killing it. It was brought into the UK by imported trees carrying this spore. It is spreading all over the UK as the wind carries it and is now in Grange. I found an infected tree close to Brown Robin last month.

I am hand woven pre-woven canework glazed railing systems personally hoping that there

winds. You should also remove any other netting this month to let smaller birds scratch around for pests in the soil especially in the fruit cage. You can also cut down the last of the autumn raspberry canes; tidying a fruit cage is one of the allotment jobs I find most satisfying sad I know. My preferred arrangement is to stretch three wires, or strings, horizontally between some posts, then removing all but five or six of the strongest the new canes from each plant. Tie them along the wires as this stops them flailing around in the wind getting damaged or tangled and

will be enough diversity in the species to be able to be resistant. Ash dieback is just the tip of the iceberg though. Trees are constantly under attack from insects, fungi and other diseases and not to mention the weather and us. The ash borer beetle from America is worrying as we continue to import timber, unchecked, from all over the world. There is chestnut blight in the South and Phytophthora affecting our larch trees. The list goes on. Dutch elm disease devastated the English elms and there are few left, but not due to the disease, but by the slash and burn policy of the authorities at the time. Thankfully this is

It’s a good month to get on with any structural bits and bob;, replace wires and stakes, repair paths and raised beds, check your tools, oil squeaky wheelbarrow wheels. Make sure your hosepipe is away from frosts as if there’s any water left in there it’ll expand and burst it. Also, have a good tidy up; check underneath plastic and pots for clusters of snails all cuddled up for the winter; if you’re squeamish chuck them in your green waste bin to continue their adventures.

not the case with ash. Dead wood in our woodlands are just as important as living trees. We still have Wych elms at Brown Robin and we do keep an eye on them. So our woodland ecology may dramatically change over time, but let’s be optimistic as tree diseases are a natural occurrence and trees are more resilient than we give them credit for. So next time you are at the nursery, it’s always worth checking where the tree you are buying is sourced from. For more information on ash dieback visit: www.forestry. gov.uk Tony Saunders, Hon. On a very pleasant but cool and breezy day, 12 ramblers set off from Sadgill to complete this walk. The walk began by following the walled track up to Gatescarth Pass. This track afforded us good views of the many waterfalls along the upper reaches of the River Sprint as well as close up views of Buckbarrow Crag. After a brief drinks stop looking along the Mosedale valley we continued on to the col. During our ascent from the pass to the summit it started to drizzle for a short time but this didn’t affect the expansive views down along the Hawsewater valley. By the time we’d enjoyed the views from the summit of Harter Fell the drizzle had stopped. We dropped down slightly from the top to enjoy a somewhat breezy picnic lunch whilst being able to enjoy

the stunning sight of the changing patterns created on the fell tops by both the sun and the scudding clouds.

5

The ridge walk from here over Kentmere Pike and Shipman Knotts was most enjoyable despite having to negotiate a few boggy stretches. The final descent to the col provided a few little challenges scrambling down a few short rocky sections. A most enjoyable walk.

DIRECTIONS

6 MAP SUPPLIED FOR ILLUSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY

Reference should be made to OS Map OL 7 1. The walk starts at Sadgill in Longsleddale directly from the parking spaces at the beginning of the track at G.R. NY 483057. Follow this walled track northwards for just over 2.5 miles until the col of Gatescarth Pass is reached. Be sure to look over the wall as you go to see the waterfalls.

2. Turn left and follow the obvious path which winds upwards first to Little Harter Fell and onwards to the top of Harter Fell, 1.5 miles. On the approach path and at the summit there are extensive views in all directions including Kidsty Pike, Haweswater Valley and Southwards as far as Morecambe Bay.

The programme of walks with the Grange-over-Sands Ramblers can be found in the Library or the Information Centre.

3. From the summit cairn walk Southwards following a fairly obvious, but boggy at times, path (roughly along the line of a broken fence) along the ridge to the next summit Kentmere Pike. 1.25 miles. (The trig point is on the other side of the wall.)

4. From the Pike again head South, initially alongside the wall, before the path leaves the wall for a distance before coming close to it again. Cross a stile before continuing on to the final top Shipman Knotts 1.5 miles. 5. From here the downwards path continues southwards, steepens and a few rocky, scrambly sections have to be negotiated before reaching a col and an obvious track running East to West. 6. Here turn left and follow the track back down to Sadgill.

N.B. Not a suitable walk in misty or very windy conditions.

Chestnut & Fava Bean Casserole

Higginsons puts the ‘BANGERS’ into Bonfire Night for Sausage Week

Hodmedod’s was founded in 2012 to bring British grown beans and other products from farms. We’re proud to feature them on the farm shop shelves here at Low Sizergh Barn as their beliefs dovetail with ours. This month’s recipe celebrates their first product: the Fava Bean, grown in Britain since the Iron Age but little eaten in recent centuries. Fava Beans are delicious, nutritious to eat and good for the soil and bees as they’re grown. Ingredients • 1 tbsp Rapeseed Oil

• 100g Higginson’s Smoked Bacon Lardons (leave out for a vegetarian dish) • 2 Onions, chopped

• 150ml Red Wine

• 400g Hodmedod’s Whole Fava Beans (or 100g Hodemedod’s Dried Whole Fava Beans, presoaked and cooked)

• 3 Celery sticks, cut into 2cm lengths

• 180g ready-to-use Whole Chestnuts

• 250g Chestunut Mushrooms, thickly sliced

• 1½ tsp Dried Thyme

• 2 Carrots (large), sliced very thickly

• 2 tbsp The Watermill Flour

• 450ml Potts Beef Stock or (Meals from Anarchy Vegetable Stock for the vegetarian option) • Salt and Black Pepper

Method 1. Heat the oil in a large casserole and fry the lardons (if using) for a few minutes. Add the chopped onions and sauté for about 5 minutes, until softened. 2. Add the celery and carrots, stir well and then turn the heat down and cover the casserole. Leave the vegetables to ‘sweat’ for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Fancy the idea of winning your height in Higginson’s awardwinning Cumberland sausage? We thought you would! You will have the chance to do just that as part of our UK Sausage Week celebrations. Every year, Sausage Week takes place around Bonfire Night to promote the reputation of this great British product as a quality, increasingly premium product with an economical price tag. This year UK Sausage Week takes place between Monday 30th October and Sunday 5th November. During that week, we will be getting creative with the season’s finest produce to create our annual

BONFIRE BANGERS: • Sticky Toffee Apple Sausages • Spiced Pumpkin Sausages • The Vampire Slayer Sausages

ANY 3 PACKS FOR £10 We will also be running our Sausage Week Competition, the winner of which will receive a prize consisting of “your height in Cumberland Sausage”. So, how can you enter? Simply guess the right answer to the following question by completing an entry form in-store:

How many sausages do Higginsons sell in a week on average? Is it enough to cover the distance between: • Higginsons to Cartmel and back • Higginsons to Flookburgh and back • Higginsons to Witherslack and back Entry forms will be available between Saturday 28th October and Friday 3rd November. The winner will be drawn from all correct entries on Saturday 4th November. Good luck! Look out for: Our 2017 Christmas Brochures arriving in-store soon!

3. Turn the heat up slightly and stir in the mushrooms. Sprinkle the flour across the vegetables and stir well. Cook for 2 minutes before adding the wine. Stir well. 4. Add the fava beans, chestnuts, stock, thyme and seasoning. Cover with a lid and simmer gently for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally. 5. Delicious served with baked or mashed potatoes and a dark green vegetable like savoy cabbage or curly kale. It also pairs brilliantly with mashed swede and braised red cabbage.

THE OLD VICARAGE NEWSLETTER Allithwaite, Grange-over-Sands

Welcome to our Newsletter. We’ve had a busy summer filled with visits from entertainers and craftwork. July

We didn’t rest for long after the excitement of our Strawberry Fete, as it was immediately followed by a concert by Lizzy G who serenaded our residents with Jazz songs.

August

The Uke Group who are a part of U3A came and gave us a rousing concert. Our residents loved it and we can’t wait to have them back. There were more new visitors including Bay Search & Rescue who brought their Hagglund vehicle and a boat for our residents to look at. It was a chance to see them up close and we were very grateful to learn about the incredible work they do.

September The Vicarage Voices choir returned after a summer break and we were glad to have them back - there is nothing like singing to raise the spirits. Our residents finished another blanket - it was a blaze of colour and we want to thank Elizabeth who leads the weekly knitting sessions with our residents.

Lizzy G returned with some mellow jazz songs

We were delighted to be invited to Allithwaite Primary School’s end of year concert at Victoria Hall – we saw a wonderful performance of The Wizard of Oz.

We donated some Lego to the school for a competition. The pupils made a range of amazing animals which we put on display at The Old Vicarage. The residents chose their top three designs and we gave Lego vouchers as prizes. At the end of the month Lorraine Smythe, a professional flower arranger, helped our residents make some stunning displays.

We also had our usual activities including weekly choir sessions in the garden under the summer sun. We were impressed to discover the musical talents of one of our residents, Leon who entertained us with a performance on the keyboard – we had an impromptu sing along.

The team from Bay Search & Rescue

In the middle of the month we had our second summer barbecue. It poured down of course but that didn’t stop us from having lots of hot dogs, hamburgers and potato salad. And we always enjoy ice-cream, no matter what the weather! We kept up our spirits in the bad weather with lots of indoor activities, ball games and quizzes.

November Events Bonfire Night Macmillan Coffee Morning on 15th November at 2pm Rachel Mercer concert

Elizabeth with the stunning blanket she helped our residents make

Our residents created a visage using pastel arts and we displayed it at The Old Vicarage. Our walls are filled with their wonderful artwork. Reminiscence activities are a way to have fun and help remind our residents of past events and activities – we like to use a variety of activities including quizzes, foods and scents. The residents have started working on some reminiscence tables which involves covering tables with photos and pictures of events that they remember.

Dealing with loneliness By Lawrie Woodley

People are living longer which means that some outlive their partners by a considerable period and so have to live alone for many years. As their contemporaries also die there is more and more isolation. With the scattering of families as offspring move with their jobs, or where housing is available, then this isolation is more pronounced. This can mean fewer family visits, importantly from grandchildren, to keep the family together; children then don’t notice deterioration in their parents’ health and well-being. Councils have used their cutbacks to withdraw support from many facilities that were in place to cater for older people. Thus, many day centres and similar establishments have closed due to lack of funding, or due to charitable bodies being unable to find the money to pay the rent, usually of council run establishments. Council run old people’s homes have all but disappeared thus removing potential meeting places for day care centres. The removal or restriction of local bus services has meant that older people who are reasonably active, and have reached the stage where they can no longer drive, can’t get out to either go shopping, visit friends or go to day centres. Many have to rely on voluntary car schemes. M.P.s reasoning seems to be based on the facilities in metropolitan areas where there are buses/ trams regularly available. The situation in rural areas has hardly been noticed until comparatively recently when all sorts of local transport schemes have had to be devised. It was government policy some years ago to foster the closing

of many post offices. This was after removing a lot of work the post office used to undertake and then declare they weren’t financially viable. The village post office was an ideal meeting place whereas there are long round trips to anonymous post offices elsewhere. Younger, retired, drivers should be encouraged to volunteer to join car schemes to ‘do their bit’ as it not only gives the lonely more confidence, but also means that they have someone to chat to. In this instance, the more drivers the Council can call on, the lighter the load. The driver is yet another person who might identify loneliness and provide a bit of company or tell someone else. Chatting to a passenger who has just come from a care home where their partner is suffering from Alzheimer’s and they’ve hardly been recognised, can be very therapeutic for both parties. Pensioners get a £10 Christmas Bonus which is barely sufficient to buy a book of stamps for Christmas cards nowadays. Withdraw this ’bonus’ and, instead, give it to the local authority in which the pensioner has their postcode; this money then to be ring fenced for allocation to the local bus operators to ensure bus services are maintained, if not increased. Perhaps a nominal charge of £1 for each bus trip would not come amiss; provided that this, then, didn’t gradually creep up with inflation and give a council an ‘opportunity’ to have another’ cash cow’!

Many suggestions for helping older folk involve people who volunteer their services and don’t expect payment. David Cameron suggested many years ago that it should be possible to provide a ‘passport’ once a DBS check has been carried out to avoid going through all the procedures when one takes on another voluntary (or even professional) role. Instead, there’s an amount of bureaucracy in taking on a volunteer which can be both expensive for the organisation and off putting for the volunteer. The idea of the ‘passport’ should be pursued. It might make anyone who wants to pop round and see someone who lives on their own, a little more keen if they’re not to fall foul of Health and Safety. A bit of self-help for people on their own is, if possible, to walk to the shops for their personal shopping. They may not be able to carry a big ‘shop’ home on one trip so they go again in a couple of days which keeps them active and gives them an opportunity to interact with other people, and possibly make a new friend or two. Some local shops will deliver for you, on payment of a small fee, but you’ve still been out to see other folk. Churches have arrangements for visiting local parishioners who may be housebound and would probably welcome the opportunity to help lonely people in their need of company. They might be able to arrange lifts to church if asked.

One person I know has milk delivered by a milkman. This has the benefit of not having to carry heavy milk cartons home, providing local employment and, interestingly, means a call from the milkman to collect his money. An opportunity for a chat, perhaps, and yet another person keeping an eye on someone living on their own. Promote the franchising of post offices outlets in small convenience stores to bring this facility back into the smaller communities could make a big difference. South Lakes Age UK are currently setting up several volunteer services. Their ‘Friends Exchange Service’ provides free and confidential support through our trained befriending volunteers for older people who may live alone, be housebound, have days when they see no-one, may be isolated or are unable to access other activities. If this of interest to you please get in touch with Age UK at the address at the bottom of this article. Alternatively, if you would like to be ‘a friend’ Age UK would love to hear from you. They are looking for people who can provide companionship including; chatting, listening, reminiscing, making a cup of tea in the client’s home and encouraging older people to join Age UK’s activities in the local area.

To find out more please contact the Friends Exchange Service Co-ordinator on 01539 728118 or email volunteering@ageuksouthlakeland.org.uk. You can also visit our website at www.ageuk.org.uk/southlakeland

CHURCH NEWS

Remembrance Day at St Peter’s, Field Broughton St Peter’s, Field Broughton, is planning special remembrance days on the second Sunday of each month leading up to 11th November 2018. Twelve men from the parish died for their country in the First World War. Each will be remembered at our 9:30 am Sunday service.

All our Sunday Services in November are in the United Reformed Church when we are joined by our Methodist friends. At the Women’s Guild this month we are looking forward to our various speakers. On the 1st, our meeting will be a devotional, led by Revd Jo Rand. On the 8th, Sarah Miles is going to tell us about the work of the Bendrigg Trust, while on the 15th, Sally Lindsay is going to tell us about another worthwhile charity, the Mercy Ships. On the 22nd we are again hearing about work overseas when Linda Willets tells us about Supporting a Ugandan School. The final meeting of the month comes home,

The church also invites parishioners, who wish to pay tribute to their own relations who sacrificed their lives in the Great War, to contact the churchwardens. A memorial display will be in the church throughout the year.

On Sunday 12th November we will remember Private Timothy Benson of the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, killed at the Battle Passchendaele on 26th September 1917, aged 27. Timothy was the eldest son of John Benson, a carter and Mary Benson, of Newtonin-Cartmel. He was born at Ayside and lived in Silverdale in 1911. He enlisted at Ulverston in December 1914. Their twelve names are: Timothy Benson, John Churchman, Robert G

Church comes to Toast Church On Sunday 15th October, the normal 10:30 URC/Methodist service was cancelled so that the congregation could instead join the families of Toast Church for their activities at 9:30. We all sang songs with lots of actions and movement, shared news together and heard a Bible story about Abraham and Sarah being promised a baby in their old age. We then discussed how we felt about the story in small groups and everyone had a go at making an origami star with a hope or prayer hidden inside. Now the Toast Church board in the Grange Methodist hall is covered with stars – almost as many as God tried to get Abraham to count in the sky! Of course, being Toast Church, we finished with toast. Toast Church normally meets every Sunday morning at 9ish during school term time and on some Sundays during the holidays. It’s aimed at children and families – many parents stay – and is based around singing, talking and making things together, not forgetting the toast! For more information, e-mail jo.rand@methodist.org.uk or just come and try it out one Sunday.

Mrs Ros Harrison came to the Women’s Network meeting and demonstrated her talent for flower arranging. Not only did her skills come out in a wonderful way, but she inspired us with her talk of the progress of her church in Barrow, where they had taken over an old cinema/bingo hall and are refurbishing it, hoping to dedicate it to Christian work in February. Her theme for her flower arrangements was ‘Autumn’ hence the wonderful colours of the flowers, grasses, dried lanterns and fruits that she used. Her first arrangement contained a beautiful orchid, but other flowers she used were less spectacular but just as lovely. She made five arrangements in less than

an hour and made it look so easy. One delightful display was kept for the church for Sunday worship, one was sent to our Minister and the others were sent to those who had recently had problems. Mrs Elizabeth Armstrong was the pianist and Mrs Kath Pickstone chaired the meeting. Among the announcements, one was that tickets were available for the soup and dessert lunch in November and homemade soup and sweets were required. Members were happy to offer to supply these needs. Profits from this meal were to go to Network charities. The next meeting on October 24th is to be conducted by our own members and the topic is ‘My Favourite Poem’. Everyone is welcome, just come along and make new friends. At 5.00pm on the 17th November Rosemary Hoyle will give a talk and slideshow about the Ecumenical Pilgrimage to the Holy Land she went on in March this year. The presentation will be followed, at 6.00pm, by a light meal of food from the Holy Land provided by the Venerable Penny Driver, our retired Archdeacon. Lifting the Veil on Boarbank

By Matron We are more than the clothes we wear! I am more than a Matron. I have served my Queen and country in the armed forces but to look at me in my nurse’s uniform no one would ever know. My Patients are more than just patients, they are men and women who have lead diverse and interesting lives, some having a profound impact on society. The Sisters at Boarbank are more than the veils they wear. Whilst having a common purpose they come from different walks of life and have all lead incredible lives. It is so easy to judge others by their clothing and conjure an image of how they are or should be, when in reality they could be very different to what we expect. Staff training at Boarbank uses the phrase ‘never judge a book by its cover’ and we tailor the care we give to needs of the patient. You don’t fit in at Boarbank, we fit around you. It has been a busy and exciting first half-term of the school year at Cartmel. achievements, sharing details of progression through the journalist ranks from trainee reporter to his current position with overall responsibility for a number of titles. James gave an account of how a personal experience whilst a young Crime Reporter at The Gazette in Blackpool had a profound effect on him, highlighting how things happen in life that can shape you and your direction of travel. He then talked about the importance of setting goals and following dreams, no matter how ambitious. Dr Williams provided an overview of successes, including academic achievements (maintaining the position in recent years as one of the best performing schools in

Cumbria and acknowledged the contribution of staff that left last year and welcomed those that had recently joined. His speech finished by addressing pupils: ‘We are very proud of you, not just for your academic successes, but for your personal qualities, support for the school and your respect and care for each other. Tonight you represent not just yourselves, but the whole student body and it is a pleasure to be able to recognise your many different talents and achievements.’

Highlights have included a trip for the whole school to Brockhole, after our Year 6 pupil Annabel Holcroft won a competition run by the Lake District National Park Authority. Our children enjoyed a packed day, including adventures on the Treetop Nets, pond dipping, trail following and mini golf.

Year 5 and 6 enjoyed another fun day out as part of Cartmel Priory’s ‘Priory Day’. We are very lucky to be so closely associated with such a magnificent church, and were delighted to join several other schools in the area for a day of craft, drama and music activities based on Generosity, one of our Christian values. The final couple of weeks of half-term have brought an apple-pressing event to let children take home their own juice, and a Forest School day that saw all classes spend a day in the woods around Cartmel, making the most of the autumn weather and our beautiful surroundings. When we return after the half-term holiday we will be starting to think about all our festive activities—including our Christmas Fair in Cartmel Village Hall on 25 November. You can hear what some of our pupils think in recent interviews with Lakeland Radio’s ‘Back to School’ breakfast slot. SCHOOL REPORT

Allithwaite Primary

This month we have worked in our mixed aged house families on various activities focused around our School Christian Value ‘responsibility’. Juliet from the charity ‘Children of Hope’ came with Reverend Rachel to talk to us about the children in Uganda and their school, which we are supporting. She talked to us about amazing footballs that the children in Uganda make themselves out of recycled produce and palm leaves. We then had a challenge to work together to make our own footballs from all the various recycling that we had brought from home. Our footballs were fantastic and they all (just about) passed the kick test! We also wrote some prayers and hopes for the children, thinking

about their lifestyles and needs. We wrote these onto brand new footballs and Juliet is going to take them with her next week when she visits the children. She is also taking a selection of our homemade footballs, which we think the children will have a little giggle about! We are hoping that we can arrange a trade; one of our brand new footballs in exchange for one of their amazing homemade ones. We celebrated Harvest with a special child led worship. Each class gave a performance and we enjoyed songs, dances, artwork, poetry and acting. There was fantastic support from families for which we would like to say a huge thank you. The children felt exhilarated after performing to you.

Grange CE School teachers Mrs Johnson and Mrs Whinfield are off to our link school in Sikles, Nepal over the half term holiday to work with our overseas British Council partners.

The older children have been learning about the Ancient Greeks. As well as finding out about Greece and the myths and legends, they have also created some beautiful paintings and sculptures of Greek urns. Year 5 and 6 spent a day a Cartmel Priory considering the value of generosity along with all the other church schools in the area.

groceries for the local foodbank and silver coins for the Bishop’s Harvest appeal. Our new Reception and Nursery children are loving our new Early Years space. They already feel really at home! Lindale Pre-school Nursery also celebrated Harvest with a trip to Fletcher’s Fruit and Veg shop where the children chose the vegetables that they then brought back to nursery to make delicious soup. Our photo shows some of Class 1 at Castle Head where they picked apples and made juice. This was partly organised by our Year 6, school leaders.

Idris, Charlie, Alice and Bella. Y5 and 6.

We have had a very busy and fun start to the term! The children are enjoying all the exciting learning opportunities connected to their topics. Key Stage 1 are learning about the Great Fire of London. As part of that they have made very careful collages of Tudor houses and learnt about how and why the fire started. They also have been creating ‘Comic’ artwork which is currently on display as part of the Comic Arts festival in Kendal.

MOOR

From the children: On Friday 13th October we attended the Netherwood Hotel to take part in the SLPP (South Lakes Pupil Parliament). We spent the day getting to know the other children from different schools and discussing issues that affect us both locally and worldwide. We were then greeted by Mr Speaker, John Bercow from the House of Commons, he was an inspirational speaker. He taught us how to debate effectively and he filled us with helpful tips and knowledge. Mr Speaker then chaired the debate “Can ordinary people save the sea from pollution?” We are going to feed back to our school and the Rotary Club of Grange about our amazing day at SLPP.

Lower Holker W.I.

Our recent meeting gave us a fascinating insight into ‘Ice houses’, when Rob David gave a talk with slides about their history and uses. Starting in the early 1800 hundreds when huge ice blocks were sawn from a lake in the USA and shipped across here and stored to allow the aristocracy to enjoy their ice cream desserts! Later Norwegian ice was used. Our next members meeting (Wednesday 1st November) is in Flookburgh Village Hall. This will start at 1pm with a pie & pea lunch, followed by the A.G.M.

Following a short business part of the meeting, members enjoyed a very interesting and informative talk on Genealogy by Lynne Pritchard. Lynne had some very helpful tips and web addresses for those wanting to pursue or continue their own family tree investigations. We would like to thank those who supported us at our recent Kitty Brown Fashion Show. Despite the poor weather, this was a very successful event with the proceeds being donated to Grange First Responders. The next meeting will be the AGM and lunch on Tuesday 7th November.

Our December 6th meeting will be in Holker Village Hall, starting at 1.30pm (members) followed at 2pm by an open meeting for a popular return of “Jenny’s Beads”, when visitors are welcome to join us.

Grange Forum

Our season was launched by Isobel Stirk, painting a word picture of Dickensian London, its filth and, for the masses, the pain of dire wretchedness. Charles Dickens recorded these conditions and we were able to feel much of what existed in his day by Isobel’s presentation. On the 7th of November we join a talk by Martin Cooper as he walks the West Highland Way. 14th November sees us on Sovereign Service with Rev Nigel McCullough. On the 21st November Dr Rob David tells us about an Oriental Mirage - Eastern influences in Cumbria. Talk starts at 2pm. On the 28th David Allison revisits us to reveal what it is like to be a Referee Manager (change to the printed programme). Finally, there are two tickets still available for Cilla at the Palace Theatre, Manchester on Wednesday 22nd November at 2.30pm. Also may we remind you of our planned trip for Afternoon Tea at Carus Green Golf Club on Thursday 30th November at 3pm. Ring Ann Anderson on 015395 33696 for further details on the above two events.

New members are most welcome - ring Paul Ramsden on 015395 36547. Abbot Hall Hotel, Kents Bank on Tuesdays at 10.15 am or as otherwise stated.

On October 7th members celebrated the 63rd anniversary of the chartering of the club with a superb afternoon tea at the Hampsfell House Hotel. At the October club meeting members discussed plans for future projects. The current main projects are the Sensory Garden, Singing for Memory and The UK wide Trafficking survey. Members undertook a street survey of the public’s knowledge of Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery and were in Grange and Barrow as part of a nationwide survey. Many thanks to those who took part on the paper and online surveys. Singing for Memory on Thursday mornings at Allithwaite Community Centre continues. Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society

Dr. Rob David gave a fascinating talk on the fate of the 150 Germans and Austrians living in Cumbria during World War 1 - “Waiter, Miner, Butcher, Spy”. Those men retaining their German/ Austrian nationality were mostly interned, including an enclave of German miners at Nenthead and hotel waiters from Keswick. Losing the wage-earner left many families in great poverty.

Those who were naturalised British had mixed fortunes, especially when ‘Germanophobia’ spiked after events such as the sinking of the ‘Lusitania’ and horror stories from Belgian refugees. Some pork butchers in Barrow had their windows smashed, and “spy fever” fuelled by the media led to the German wife of an ex MP near Whitehaven being interned. This followed a U Boat attack on Lowca Coke Ovens. Some others however lived unmolested. After the War most were deported but some such as the Head Waiter from Keswick were allowed to remain. Some families were never reunited. Next meeting brief AGM 2nd November 7.30 pm followed by “Show and Tell” by members. Research meeting 14th December 2pm. Both in the Supper Room and include refreshments.

The final results for the year are now almost complete. Jordan Harrison has had a wonderful year showing that all that practice pays off. Jordan has won the Glover Cup and the Millennium Trophy. Caroline Blee chaired a sparsely attended meeting. Two Teams were finalised for the Federation Quiz. There are three outings being organised by Allithwaite and Cartmel WI’s to which members are invited. Two ladies will go to Crosthwaite`s Christmas Party. Nominations were taken for next year`s committee and the Annual Meeting`s refreshments were arranged. The Treasurer reported a healthy bank balance. Unfortunately the speaker cancelled at such short notice that it was not possible to find a replacement. To fill up the time members told of their activities during the summer months. Next month. Annual Meeting with a supper of soup and a sweet.

Grange Rotary

On 13 September we had a visit from Claire Louise Chapman of Growing Well who updated the Club as to developments at the Mental Health charity operating from Low Sizergh Barn, Kendal. This Charity is the only such organisation in the UK which combines mental health recovery work with the operation of an organic growing company. Our own member Dr Richard Fell entertained us on 27 September with tales of his childhood when his parents were visited by Arthur Ransome of Swallows and Amazons fame and his Russian wife Evgenia Schelepina. We heard of the Russian Revolution, the Bolsheviks and how Ransome led the double life of British spy and later author. Evgenia was secretary to Trotsky and was the major source of secret information.

The owner of the Hazelmere in Grange, Dorothy Stubley, spoke at our 4 October meeting, her subject being Talking Tea. The Tea House is but one arm of her business. This fascinating talk enlightened us as to how healthy Tea is. It is claimed it gives a gentle lift, an alert relaxation and an ability to concentrate. Tea does contain caffeine but far less than coffee, which gives a massive, short lived jolt!

On Tuesday 21st November (10.15 am in the Victoria Hall) we welcome back Isobel Stirk to give her talk “Warriors, Writers and War Hospitals”. This time Isobel will be telling us about how poets and novelists who shared their experiences during the First World War changed people’s attitudes to the conflict. A beautiful sunny morning blessed our coffee morning at Abbot Hall Hotel, several new members joined and took part in the lively conversations about our activities. The evening with the High Society Jazz Band in the Victoria Hall was a sell out with just enough space left for more energetic members to dance to the rhythms. Local Explorers Group’s October visit was to the Hawkshead Brewery at Staveley for a tour in which we were able to taste samples of the malted bar-

If you don’t want to draw the birds, you can paint your own picture. 16th November is the very important AGM and we hope that as many people as possible will turn up for this meeting. Please make a big effort to be there.

The last meeting on 23rd November is a watercolour workshop (landscape) given by Clive Wylie and it will last from 2 - 4.30pm (not the usual 2-4pm). So please make a note of that. Bring your usual watercolour materials.

Mothers & Others

On 19th September, Sarah, the fundraising & marketing officer for Bendrigg Trust was our speaker. She gave us a very informative talk, accompanied by a slide show, about this special centre which provides facilities for disabled people to enjoy an outdoor adventure experience. On 26th September, members attended the opening night of Ulverston Amateur Operatic Society’s production of ‘The Producers’ which they stated had been the funniest musical they had performed. We all enjoyed the show. On 3rd October, Lisa Smith, founder of ‘Ginger Bakers’ gave us the history of her business from baking in her home kitchen in 2006 to her current new bespoke premises at Plumgarths; quality before quantity being her motto. She produces first class products to local businesses and food markets. We sampled some excellent cakes.

In September, Jean Hoskins gave a very moving and informative talk about Project Linus a charity which donates blankets and other knitted garments to premature babies, sick children and teenagers. The blankets help them deal with their illnesses or conditions. The Project is named after the Peanuts character Linus who always carries his ‘security’ blanket around. The cartoon creator - Charles Schulz - gave his permission for the charity to use the name. In advance of Jean’s visit several members had knitted blankets and presented Jean with 24 of them to take back to her base at Furness General Hospital. In October a group of members enjoyed a canal trip with afternoon tea served on board along with a glass of Champagne. Our next meeting will be a hands on craft

event. New members are very welcome. Contact Margaret on 36735 for more details.

Allithwaite Running Club

Firstly, well done Steve Wilson, Julia Sayburn & Paul Hughes for completing the lakes-in-a-day ultra marathon from Caldbeck to Cartmel on the 7/8 of October. Conditions were rather tough and slippy. Allithwaite 8 race - Allithwaite Running club is holding another race on Saturday the 4th of November. This is a multi-terrain race. The course is 8 miles and very varied, with more off-road sections than in 2016. About 2/3 is over fields, on trails through woods, an ascent of Hampsfell (fingers x’d for views) and some racecourse too. The other 1/3 is short pieces of road to link the offroad bits, so the variation will make for a really interesting race. The race starts at 11:00. Grange Lecture Society

On 10th October author and broadcaster Nicholas Crane returned to talk about ‘The Making of the British Landscape’. In a wide-ranging, lavishly illustrated lecture he traced the

evolution of the British landscape over 12,000 years from a European peninsula of glacier and tundra to an island of cities and countryside. The process, he said, began in c.9700 BC when climate warming melted the ice and led, through rising sea levels, to Britain’s separation from Europe in c.6200BC. Man-made changes too left their mark as from c.4050BC continental migrants began clearing forests, introduced farming and built rectangular timber houses. He detailed increasing developments over succeeding millennia barrows, stone circles, fields, hill forts until the landscape was transformed by the building work of the Romans which for four centuries brought extensive urbanisation. After their departure urban living fell away but revived under the Normans and expanded hugely in the 18th and 19th Centuries through population growth and industrialisation. On 7th November John Pilkington will talk on ‘Russia and Europe: What Next?’ and on 21st November Michael Green considers medical mysteries from the Old Testament in a lecture entitled ‘Priests, Piles and Parasites’. Lectures begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

Cartmel and District Flower Club

On 16th October, we were delighted to welcome our demonstrator, Joan Bentley. The stage was a riot of coloured flowers including roses, carnation, gerbera, lily’s, berries of cotoneaster, phormium, hydrangea - a beautiful display. Many thanks to Joan for her help and great sense of humour. The club’s next meeting on Monday, November 20th will be a Jacob’s Join lunch at 1pm in the village hall, followed by the AGM and a Display of Vintage Clothing by Margaret Watkin.

Grange Probus Club

Grange Probus Club greeted Richard Rhodes as their guest speaker and enjoyed his entertaining talk on his experiences in teaching and as the previous Police Commissioner for Cumbria. Richard described the characters that he had encountered both as staff and pupils in his long career in teaching. His experience as a magistrate had also provided useful background in his role as the county’s first elected Police Commissioner, and he gave interesting background on his role and responsibilities. The club’s next meeting will be on Monday, November 13th at 10.30 for 11am at the Netherwood Hotel, when Graham Davies will talk about Tidal Energy (with special reference to Morecambe Bay and the Duddon Estuary). The club welcomes retired men and women as new members and meets on the second Monday of each month for interesting talks. Contact Chairman Chris Harris

on 015395 34221 or Secretary Sean Jameson on 32105 for information on membership and events.

Flookburgh Village Hall

As we are now in the midst of Coffee Mornings at the hall, please make a note in your diary for 25th November, Flookburgh Village Hall are holding their `Christmas Fayre`. All the usual stalls and raffles, why not buy your Christmas presents early? Open 10am - 12 noon. As the year progresses we find more of our friends have passed away, saddened as we are, our thoughts invariably turn to the lack of volunteers and committee members. It would be sad and I know this is happening to all committees and village halls, that there is no one to take over. I am sure if people come and see what we do they would enjoy themselves. It only is a couple of hours a month and I am sure they would find it satisfying. A Whist Drive hosted by Hanson and Hazel Charnley was held in the hall on the 7th October and raised £341.50 which they kindly donated to the village hall.

All types of parties, weddings and funerals use the hall and we open seven days a week. Anyone wishing to hire the hall, please contact: Barry on 015395 59075 or 07989 596141.

Newton and Field Broughton WI

The October meeting consisted of the Annual General Meeting of the club followed by a Pie and Pea Supper which was enjoyed by all. The next meeting will be held on 8th November at 7.15pm in Lindale Village Hall when Jan Berry will demonstrate Making Sugar Flowers. Visitors and new members are welcome for a charge of £4.

Cartmel Fell & District Local History Society

Visitors (£3) are welcome to join The History Society when it meets in the Parish Rooms on 13th November. Kelley Sproston-Heath of the National Trust will share some of Fell Foot’s fascinating stories; from lost love, to a vanished grand ‘villa’ that used to dominate the landscape there and will update us on the renovations project at this historic park. On 11th December Mike Winstanley will take us from ‘Markets to Supermarkets, with 200 years of shopping’. Future meetings include: 8th January - Annual General Meeting; 12th February - ‘Watermill History’ Charles Rowntree; 12th March - ‘Stone Circles and Burial Mounds’ Dr Tom Clare; 9th April - ‘Any Old iron: Fingerposts and Foundries in Cumbria’ Mike and Kate Lea “

LETTERS Dear Editor,

Who has stolen the fish which was part of the Loki sculpture in the ornamental Gardens? It was a fantastic tourist attraction. It was made of fibreglass so as to not contaminate the water. Sheila Williams

Dear Editor,

Would anyone living in this area who was being cared for by Carewatch (Morecambe) until February 2017 please ring Jessie on 38876. Name and address supplied.

Dear Editor,

We would like to say a massive thank you to The Underdogs and Rusty Bullets for such a fantastic night and giving their time to support bridge house and also to the Ravenstown club, Peter and Colin who worked so hard filling all our drinks. And to everyone that donated a raffle prize it helped us raise a staggering £1086.35. we had such a fantastic night and we cannot say thank you enough to everyone that was involved. Lynn Proctor on behalf of Bridge House

Dear Editor,

‘That thing in the duck pond’ Questions and a comment.

Firstly, why is it there to spoil a pleasant view? Who authorised it at what cost and who is paying for it? If, as you claim, it is to highlight pollution, the two objects appear to be made of plastic which breaks down and eventually poisons our watercourses and oceans, ending up in the food chain as well as producing a soup of microbeads which is continually increasing in the Pacific. Best wishes, William J.Houston.

Letters to the Editor are published on the understanding that they may have to be shortened to fit available space. Publication of a letter in no way reflects the views of Grange Now. All letters must be accompanied by a name and address even if the correspondent requests anonymity. In this case ‘name and address supplied’ will be added.

Dear Editor,

Anyone reading Mr Peter’s letter in September’s issue will realise there is currently some unrest in our Garden Society. I understand there will be further resignations from the committee at November’s AGM and the future of the Society is unsure. As a long standing member and former chairman I would like to set out some of the history and innovations of the group and add a touch of dignity and, maybe, hope to this wellknown and loved institution. I became a member shortly after retiring to Grange 20 years ago and in that time my gardening knowledge and skills have increased tremendously partly due to the monthly talks, not only by renowned professional gardeners and nurserymen

Dear Editor,

We are once again approaching Christmas time and the Christmas Tree Committee, as in the past, is writing to the residents, organisations and businesses in Grange-over-Sands and District to seek contributions towards the lighting of the Christmas Tree that is situated in the Ornamental Gardens As you may have heard this year Grange Town Council are providing Christmas Lighting along the main thoroughfares in Grange but this is funded completely separately from the Tree Lighting which is still entirely dependent on the very generous contributions

but by specialist alpinists, botanists, florists and flower arrangers as well as from members and local enthusiasts. We have, over the years, had wonderful holidays and visits to places from Glasgow to Cornwall and scores of famous Houses and Gardens in between. Sometimes these were arranged by one of our members but in recent years we have joined tours organised by holiday companies. Each summer we have shorter trips to gardens and estates in the north travelling by coach or private cars. Our society is a member of the RHS and Lakeland Horticultural Society through which prestigious groups we have attended workshops, talks and visits.

received by means of our appeal letters.

The annual appeal is to ask if you would care to make a donation to the lighting of the Christmas Tree for the forthcoming season. Any donation will help - just £5 or £10 would be a fantastic help.

If you would like to make a donation would you please send it to Gary at Johnston’s of Grange. Cheques made payable to ‘Grange Christmas Tree Committee’. The society has an impressive collection of trophies: a magnificent silver cup, rose bowls, candelabra and a tray, donated over many years, some of whose origins are unknown. Until this year these were presented annually to members who accrued points for their exhibitions on the “monthly show table” at our summer meetings. Classes included indoor and outdoor plants, fruit, vegetables and flower arrangements with the Cordingley Cup going to the person scoring most points overall.

confidence to give (once) a demonstration and slide presentations of holidays. Just like many other members I have done my bit and held a number of roles in the group and, although time consuming, it was good to work in the team. if the Society is unable to replace the office holders who resign in November there will be a lot of loose ends to tie up. I urge members who want to help this process or, indeed, support the remains of the society to survive a little longer, to attend the Annual General Meeting on Friday November 17th at 2pm in the United Reformed Church Hall where, I am sure, all our views can be aired and appreciated, Barbara Ramsden

Dear Editor,

My Granddaughter, Maddy Davis, has applied for and been accepted to take part in South Cumbria Guiding trip to Romania in 2018.The group will be working with The Smiles Foundation helping disadvantaged children and adults in that area. Maddy has been in guiding for the last ten years as a Rainbow, Brownie, Guide and Young Leader. She is sixteen and has just left Cartmel Priory School to attend Queen Elizabeth sixth form in Kirby Lonsdale. She is now helping out at Guides in Kirby Lonsdale one night after school.

As part of the project, each Guide has to raise £1000 towards the trip.Maddy has several plans for raising the money beginning with a quiz which is now available to buy for £1. If you should come across her, please give her your support. On her return from Romania she will be happy to give a presentation about her trip.

Guiding is a wonderful organisation, giving girls of all ages support and encouragement so that they grow in confidence and learn to live life to the full. Sandra Barton

FRIENDLY HONEST PROPERTY ADVICE

The Human Face of Modern Agency Whether you are estate planning, estate administering or involved in contentious probate, our private client and property teams are up to the task. With offices in the heart of the City at Old Bailey and in Cumbria, we understand the differing needs of town and country clients.

In fact, we’ve been working for farmers and fananciers, builders and beauticians, and everyone in between, since 1903. Visit our website or contact us to arrange a confidential review of your requirements. www.gedye.co.uk 015395 32313

info@gedye.co.uk

A lot of my previous articles have centred around how modern estate agency has changed with the advent of improved technology and marketing media.

At Poole Townsend we offer a sales package which is second to none and tailored to each individual client’s needs, however I also firmly believe that this wouldn’t be possible without the right people backing up this package. My friends and family take great delight in pointing out the regularity of my appearances in Grange Now and the Lake District Property Guide. I even get customers commenting on how nice it is putting a voice to the picture! Whilst having my face atop this article and being the ‘voice of the expert’ is nice, someone once said that ‘behind every great man is a great woman’. Far be it from me to start thinking I am a great man but I am lucky enough to have the support of three great women in the office. In an age of modern marketing it is often easy to forget the hard work that is put in behind the scenes.

Knowing your market and knowing your applicants are a huge step towards making sure that the right people are seeing the right property. And by sending the right people to the right property the chances of getting the right offer are significantly higher. Visiting each property on the market and obtaining detailed information allows our negotiators the in depth knowledge needed to effectively agree the high level of sales we have been experiencing this year.

A wealth of local knowledge and experience means that we can cement our position as one of the most established and successful agents in the town. This has led to us recording sales levels for September equal to that of all the other agents present in Grange added together. I like to think that we have the perfect blend of modern approaches and traditional values supported by a highly knowledgeable and proactive sales team. Why not come in for a good old-fashioned chat with Julie, Julie or Janet to see what’s happening in the market and what we can do for you.

An Excellent Choice... “Found ourselves in Cark at lunchtime, and didn’t have anything planned so thought we’d try the Rose & Crown. Very good decision! Warm welcome, interesting menu, excellent beer selection... My chicken stuffed with Cumberland sausage and wrapped in smoked bacon with a creamy leek sauce and vegetables was delicious and my husband was very happy with veggie cannelloni served with garlic bread and salad. And the portions were huge! At under £25 with a drink each, it was good value. If we lived locally, it would be one of our regulars!” TRIP ADVISOR
