Audio version of Grange Now Ten years ago Penny Ward initiated, with the permission of the then editor, Mary Ann Best, the recording of extracts from Grange Now for the visually impaired.

She was later joined by John Beckett, and the two of them take it in turns to travel to Barrow each month to the Vision Support Centre of Barrow and District Society for the Blind to read from the paper. John Duxbury is responsible for the recording in the studio on the top floor of the Centre, adding music as appropriate, and then copying the material on to CDs, which are mailed out to all those in Grange and district registered with the Society.

Club secures five year sponsorship deal Grange Junior Football Club would like to say a massive thank you to Jeremy and Mandy Voakes from Archway Veterinary Practice in Grange for becoming the club’s main Sponsor for the next five seasons.

On Saturday 9th December, Jeremy and Mandy visited a training session at Cartmel Priory School to see how some of their generous donation was being put to use. The photographs show some of the club players sporting new training tops carrying their practice logo. After the photos, all players from under 7’s to under 16’s took part in a penalty shootout competition, with the winner being Thomas Bradshaw from the under 10’s team. Also on the day the Under 10’s team were presented with their new kit sponsored by Wilson Robinson Flooring, Grange over Sands. The club would like to express their thanks to Simon

and Kerry for this valuable support. A spokesperson for the club told Grange Now: “We are very grateful for the generous donations received over the years from local businesses, as this helps us achieve our FA Charter Standard accreditation. We are also indebted to Cartmel Priory School for their continued support with facilities.” Grange Juniors provide football from school years Y2 to Y11 and currently have over 100 members. Cartmel Young Farmers(CYF) are planning a family fun day on Sunday 17th June to be held at Haverthwaite playing fields. A spokesperson for CYF told Grange Now, “We are holding it in aid of two charities that became close to our hearts in 2017: Alder Hey children’s hospital and The Ronald McDonald House; two worthy charities that help thousands of children and their families every year.” The son of two members of CYF underwent open heart surgery in November 2017 and with aunties and uncles also members these charities are certainly to the

forefront of their minds.

We are seeking local businesses who would like to have a stall at the family fun day. We are also seeking donations; from bottles of wine, to meals, toys or even a night away to offer as prizes. 100% of profits are going to the charities and we are hoping to have over 100 people through the gates.

Chairman of the group, Cllr Ron Shapland told Grange Now: “These sites varied from woodland and gard ens, to the Promenade and the Community Orchard. They looked at work including: clearing and re-planting of gree n spaces, seats which have been painted and litter bins. The y group also went along to the very popular

gym which is sited at the cafe end of the prom and also viewed the new information boards which were also courtesy of the 3P’s group.”

Over a period of ten years, the Group raised ove r £70,000 and provided at least £50,000 worth of voluntee r time. Thanks must go to members of the 3Ps committ ee and to the local commun ity. They have given their time to make a contribution towa rds, not just helping to imp rove and maintain Grange ’s environment and attractions, but also by designing prin ting and distributing leafl ets. Quite a feat for a band of volunteers and one for which, as residents of Grange, we should be very grateful.

Eighteen months ago, Grange Now printed their first article about the lack of affordable parking in the town which led to dozens of motorists, on 31st August 2016, receiving parking tickets for illegally parking in ‘one-hour’ spaces. South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) pointed out that they had reduced the daily rate for parking at Berners Close Car Park to £1.20 but many pointed out that if you have to drop children at school and then park and get to work, Berners was too far out of town to be of benefit. Grange Now called for the Hampsfell Car Park to be reduced to £1.20 per day, which would not only be of great benefit to local parkers, but would also generate more income from a, currently rarely used, car park.

“I’m hopeful this new deal will help workers, but also help local residents by reducing the number of commuters parking on residential streets near the town centre.” This is great news for those who work locally, particularly part-time, and as Cllr. Morrell pointed out, it is something which will probably be celebrated by residents whose roads are continually blocked by parkers.

First, was a visit to Cartmel Grange nursing home where a slightly shorter, but in full costume, version of the panto was put on for the residents which went down a treat.

On the evening of 23rd December they performed their panto again, this time for the residents of Abbot Hall Hotel which, again, went down a storm. In between these two performances, Mick, Jean and others from the panto organised a party for the performers. A cheque from the proceeds of the panto was given to three charities which the group supports: World Vision (child sponsorship), Salvation Army and Christian Blind Mission.

Grange Now has, over the past few years, run articles detailing Grange dentist, David Tomison’s expeditions to deliver healthcare provision in the Amazon.

ast October, David’s twenty two year old daughter, Ruth, a qualified nurse joined her father and a team of professionals on their latest expedition. Ruth told Grange Now: “I was fortunate enough to take part in a medical expedition to Tanzania. The expedition was run by the Vine Trust, an international development charity which enables volunteers to provide medical, home-building and care support to communities living in severe poverty. My Dad, David, has been involved with the Vine Trust for many years, joining them on several trips to Peru. When he told me about the trip to Tanzania I jumped at the opportunity, having longed to be part of an experience like this but needing my medical registration to do so. “The expedition took place on-board the Jubilee Hope, a boat based in Lake Victoria. The purpose of the boat is to provide healthcare to people in the vicinity of the lake who have no access to any medical services, we therefore travelled away from the mainland towards some remote islands to the north. Our team was made up of six international volunteers, all with medical backgrounds, who came together with the local Tanzanian team comprising doctors, lab technicians, translators, cabin crew and a cook.

The Tanzanian team were incredibly accepting, making us feel welcome and going out of their way to help out in any way required. Despite speaking impressive English they were also happy to invest time helping us to improve our Swahili! “Over the duration of the trip we visited three different islands spending a few days on each, with the aim of seeing everybody who required our services. We began each morning with a 7am meeting which included every member of the crew; here we discussed the issues and reviewed the successes of the previous day. By 9am we were welcoming aboard our first patients. The boat was equipped with a small dental room, a laboratory, and a pharmacy that stocked plenty of medications. In the morning the top deck of the boat was transformed into five consultation rooms, with the specialist eye doctor using the captain’s cabin to see his patients. This state of affairs was far from ideal but we made the best of it and managed to see around 120 people each day. The patients would queue up on the island and be brought across to our vessel in groups via a small taxi boat. Here they would wait patiently (sometimes all day) to be seen by the doctors or the dentist dependent on their needs. “The doctors could request certain tests, such as a urine culture or blood sample, which would take place in the lab. Once the results were obtained, the patients would revisit the doctor for a prescription which was supplied by me and a Tanzanian nurse in the pharmacy. If patients required further treatment, a request could be made for them to visit the mainland. Anyone with wounds was sent to me where I did my best to treat and dress them

using the limited dressing supplies provided. One gentleman I saw came with a nail through his forearm, apparently obtained after his house collapsed upon him over two weeks ago whilst he was asleep! Incidents such as this opened my eyes to a level of physical suffering I have never experienced in a British hospital and made me aware just how fortunate we are to have a service like the NHS where we can receive treatment at all times. “We were mainly treating patients for malaria, fungal infections and worms but there were plenty of other diseases too. It stills shocks and saddens me to think how many HIV positive tests were obtained each day and how much medication, to treat the incurable virus, we administered. “During the evenings we were able to visit the islands and enjoy socialising with those we had treated during the day. It never ceased to amaze me how kind and cheerful these people are; despite having so little they never failed to remained positive. Volunteering trips like this are critically import if the Vine Trust is to be able to make progress in Tanzania and Peru. Whilst medical experience can help, it is not a prerequisite for many of the volunteering opportunities – enthusiasm is far more important! Whilst we all should have an ‘end of tax year checklist’, the tax breaks on offer to each of us are often left unused and therefore lost.

It was a sunny (but cold) day for the Official Opening of the Flookburgh Community Playground on Saturday 25th November 2017.

Maximising the returns, be it growth, income or a combination of the two, from savings and investments is not only about selecting the best performing funds or the savings account paying the highest rate of interest; it is equally as important to ensure that they remain as tax efficient as possible so more of the return is retained by you. It is difficult to cover all the tax saving opportunities within an article such as this; the following are two common, and perhaps straightforward, options.

An Individual Savings Account (ISA) is an ideal way to invest; interest is tax free within an ISA and capital growth is free of capital gains tax. Up to £20,000 per individual can be placed in an ISA this tax year (the same allowance applies to the 2018/19 tax year). As the tax year end is only a couple of months away (from date of publication) this means that you can shelter up to £40,000 from taxation within the space of around 8 weeks; indeed a couple between them could shelter up to £80,000. Every year you can take a gain on an investment without paying tax on the realised gain; this is one particular allowance that is often overlooked, and therefore

lost. Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is only charged when gains exceed your annual allowance, currently £11,300 per individual; capital gains (growth rather than income) is therefore free of tax up to this level. Multiple allowances can be used for jointly held assets, allowing further gains to be made tax free. Any realised gain in excess of this is taxed at 10% or 20% for those that exceed the basic rate tax band (capital gains in excess of the annual allowance are added to other income). It should be noted that there is a surcharge applied for residential property gains at a rate of 8% (in addition to the standard 10/20%) Careful year on year tax planning can ensure tax on gains are minimised or preferably avoided altogether. As already noted, CGT planning can be doubly effective for jointly held assets. An investment should never be made simply from a tax position; however, making the most of tax allowances coupled with successful investment planning will compound returns year on year.

Councillor Gill Gardner opened the Playground which represented the culmination of 10 years’ work. She recognised the work and support of Lower Holker Parish Council, Flookburgh & District Recreational Charity, all funders and contractors and of course the community in making this project possible.

The children then enjoyed playing on the equipment and consumed cupcakes to celebrate the event.

Mayor gets a tour of Russell Armer site Grange Mayor, Councillor Peter Endsor, was one of a handful of guests invited to look around four of the ten affordable houses on the Over Sands View estate at Kent’s Bank. The final six affordable properties have now been allocated and Grange Now was invited along on a VIP tour.

Managing Director, Martyn Nicholson (pictured) was on hand to answer questions about the energy efficient homes and how providing the requisite number of affordable housing has to be built into the budget long before work begins. A point which had the full agreement of MP, Tim Farron, and District Councillor, Eric Morrell.

Endsor told Grange Now, “I’m really impressed with the size of the rooms, the amount of storage provision and also the very high standard of work, which I’m delighted to say is the same in the affordable homes as it is in the showhome”. Not forgetting, Russell Armer is the first homebuilder to incorporate Hedgehog Highways into their developments!

Code Club will be running on the Public PCs from 3.30 to 4.45 pm each Monday on 5th, 12th& 26 February. This means the PCs will not be available for public use, although the Tablets will be available and printing is also available from the Tablets. Storytime for pre-school children is on a Tuesday morning for half an hour of stories and rhymes from 10.30 am on the 6th, 20th & 27th February.

Raising awareness of environmentally friendly burials Francis Mason-Hornby, owner of the Dalton Hall Estate, introduced the woodland burial ground seven years ago in a bid to offer a greener alternative to cremations. The 30 acre site is based in woodland at the foot of Dalton Crags, Burton-in-Kendal. Francis said: “The main reason why people might not be aware of natural burial as an option is probably because talking about death and letting your loved ones know your own funeral wishes is typically a taboo subject. If you go back 150 years, death was a constant companion. When a loved one died, the coffin would be there in the front room for three or four days. Death was simply accepted as a natural part of life and all the funeral arrangements would have been organised within family and you would have been buried locally.”

Statistics reveal that nowadays at least 70% of the UK population opt for cremation. However, it has been estimated that a typical cremation releases about 320kg of carbon dioxide equivalent into the atmosphere. Francis is keen to spread awareness of natural burials as a greener, more environmentally friendly option. “Natural burial is certainly not for everyone but if you love the countryside and care for the environment it offers a real choice to do something positive at the end of a life. We’re all going to die, it’s all part of life’s rich tapestry. Death is a part of life, we couldn’t have life without death.”

Grange Town Council Pete Endsor opened the meeting with a welcome to new councillor Claire Logan.

Following the recent spate of crime around the town it was hoped that there would be a police report, however no police representative was there. This caused annoyance amongst the meeting as everyone felt police action and community involvement is needed especially as there was a suggestion that the culprits are known. Eric Morrell SLDC councillor for Grange North offered his congratulations to Sharon Shepherd (News Editor of Grange Now) in light of the news that low cost £1 a day parking is to be offered to workers in the town. This marks a successful conclusion to the

year long campaign by Sharon, Grange Now and councillor Eric Morrell. This is a great result both for people who work in the town and for local residents as it helps alleviate parking pressure on residential streets.

Mary Wilson SLDC councillor for Cartmel and Grange West informed the meeting that Lower Allithwaite Parish Council had conducted speed gun training and would be out and about over the coming weeks. She also informed the meeting on progress with the Cartmel environment forum to tackle flooding and sewage issues. There was confirmation in this meeting that there is to be no change in the precept. The next meeting if you wish to attend is Monday 12th February at Victoria Hall at 7 p.m.

County Matters I know many of us will be making our New Year’s resolutions to help us have a safe and healthy year ahead. Everything in moderation is always best but making sure our properties are safe and secure is one of the things that always concentrates the mind. Resulting from this our County Fire Service has put out an appeal to us all to check our smoke alarms.

Two of the County Councils Scrutiny Committees (the Health and Adults ones) have joined forces to form a Joint Task Group looking into the integration of Health and Social Care in our County. There will be particular emphasis on the Delayed Transfer of Care (DTOC) element of the service

which equates to the NHS and Adult Social Care systems.

As the County Council is responsible for the Social Care system and the NHS is in charge of the Hospital Care, it is in all our interests to cooperate to help make the system work better for all residents of Cumbria.

February can be a bit of a struggle. It’s still winter; cold, wet and dark but, as the song says, ‘the darkest hour is just before dawn’. Spring is in the post or, if it were a Taxi, ‘just turning the corner at the top of the road’. There’s still time to finish off none urgent jobs such as sharpening and oiling tools but certain other tasks should be approached with a little more urgency.

You should definitely check your seeds are roughly in date (I go up to two or three years out of date, you might be more fastidious) and re-order any seeds you need or want to try out as suppliers often run out of the more popular varieties. I usually do a bulk internet order, to save on postage, at the start of this month and then pick up any others from the local garden centre as and when I need them.

it’s good to bear in mind if you are pruning any trees to try and save any long straight branches or shorter more twiggy branches for the pea sticks. Ash can also be good for poles but will often be on the heavy side. Always get permission for this from the land owner and check on the day that there’s no shooting parties scheduled as things can get nervewracking very quickly if there are! Try and finish any tidying up; beds, minor repairs or construction projects before the end of this month. It’s good to finish this month thinking only about your plants and planting. You could probably also lime your Brassica beds towards the end of the month; and you may also want to consider a very thin layer of environmentally friendly organic slug pellets under any mulch you put down this month to try and reduce the number of soil dwelling slugs popping up under you seedlings later in the season. Even if it’s wet and miserable, it’s well worth trying to make as much progress as possible this month before the approaching March madness!

It would be wrong to say you’ll never hear a peep out of this bird. In fact, its peep-peep cry, or kleep-kleep if you prefer, is distinctive and shrill and it is particularly noisy at breeding time. Oystercatchers build a very shallow, simple nest in shingle and line it with a few pebbles or shells. In April and May, the female lays around three eggs, which both parents keep warm until the chicks appear.

Twelve Ramblers took part in this walk around Arnside Knott to Arnside Tower where a break was taken. Then onto Hazelslack, through Underlaid Wood and up through the squeeze of the Fairy Steps for lunch and a great view across the Bay. Here the sun broke briefly through the clouds to brighten up a dull, overcast day – but at least it stayed dry throughout! The second half of the walk was along the ridge of Beetham Fell, past Wray Cottages to Hollins Well before turning back to Arnside following the path of the old railway line alongside the estuary. This was a delightful walk with a well-balanced mixture of woods, fells, fields and coastal paths.

Woodlands and Wellbeing The woodlands in winter can be dark and gloomy places to be as they lie asleep, waiting for key events to happen so they can wake from their winter slumber.

After the winter Solstice, nature’s clock starts to tick towards spring, my favourite season. I literally get a spring in my step as life once more makes its presence known throughout the woods. I wonder how many dog walkers feel better for taking the dog for a wander in the woods? My own experiences of

Over second footbridge. On reaching farm track turn right under railway. Follow track to road and turn right. 5. At junction on left (Carr Bank Road) go over stile (SP Hazelslack). Follow path through gate to farm track turn right. Follow track to road and turn right. 6. Follow road through farm buildings and at T-junction go straight ahead onto track (SP Fairy Steps) Continue into wood and up limestone paving to Fairy Steps. To avoid tight squeeze, follow concessionary path to viewpoint at top of Fairy Steps. 7. Continue North along ridge of Beetham Fell before path descends straight ahead. At beehive dome marker turn left (SP Cockshott Lane). At next beehive dome marker take right fork.

woodlands and well being go back to when I used to run a spoon carving club on Brown Robin Reserve several years ago. We had one member who would travel from the Bolton area on a regular basis to learn to carve green wood. He was under a psychiatrist but enjoyed the woodland setting. After several months he contacted me from Poland and explained he had moved there, bought a woodland and built a log cabin with a swimming pool. It seems his time spent in the woods had cleared his mind to a point he made a life changing decision and now says he is living the dream. An old friend of mine occasionally gets in touch if he is feeling down or stressed and we sometimes

spend time in the woods carving and he sometimes takes some bits of wood back home to whittle with. It also seems to calm him and distracts him from his troubles. One of my own uplifting experiences of being in a woodland was several years ago when I was working away and I noticed the bird song was getting louder As some of you may know I have a sort of wildlife tourette’s, so I was naming them in my head. However the sound and variety of species grew to a point I couldn’t concentrate any longer and had to sit and just listen. This was a remarkable experience which is difficult to explain and, sadly, has never

been repeated. But it certainly lifted my spirits for days to come.

It is becoming apparent that woodlands are a benefit to wellbeing and organisations are now offering specialist courses and workshops in this field. Offering a chance to look at ways to tame busy minds, find peace and quiet and connect with nature. So if you are feeling down or stressed why not go for a wander in your local woodland or explore new ones, it may help.

crafty with Philippa Ball Textile Artist

My love story with textiles and crafting began at an early age. As the tallest girl in my school, mum soon taught me how to make my own clothes – it was the only way we could get things long enough! Once I knew my way around a sewing machine the world of textiles was my oyster and I’ve tried my hand at everything from stitching a parasol, quilting bedspreads to knitting a pair of socks… Being creative is addictive and I love to share my passion. I now split my time between helping creative businesses develop and grow and designing and making my own range of textile gifts and homewares from my little sewing studio in Allithwaite. The magical glimmer of an idea starts with inspiration taken from a walk high up on the fells, far down in the valley or striding around a tarn. My work reflects our beautiful Lakeland landscape and I concentrate on the quality and texture of my fabrics. Provenance is hugely important to me and I use 100% British wool tweed. It’s all about the little details and creating a special treat for someone to treasure forever. Stitch it, repair it, darn it, remake it, repurpose, upcycle or recycle: if I can stop an item from ending up in the bin then I will. As a member of the Simply Repair group in Kendal I love to find creative ways to mend and make new, particularly with people’s most beloved textiles I work to commission and my work can be seen at www.philippaball.co.uk

6. Trim your seam allowances along all four sides, being very careful not to cut into any stitches. You want the edges to be neat and tidy and about 5mm from the stitches.Trim the corners diagonally to give a neater corner when you turn it right way out. I use pinking shears for this; they cut the fabric in a zig zag meaning it doesn’t fray, but scissors work just as well.

What you’ll need: • Two pieces of coordinating fabric, one for the outside and the other for the lining fabric. • Lightweight wadding (this is the fluffy white stuff which gives your glasses some protection. • Coordinating thread • Scissors

7. Pull the fabric right side out through the opening.

8. Make sure your corners are all pushed through– I use a chop stick, but a pencil will do.

9. Now, iron everything really well, making sure the edges are nicely pressed.

1. Cut two pieces of fabric, one for the inside and one for the outside, measuring 20cms tall by 20cms wide. Cut a piece of wadding 18cms by 18cms (2cms smaller than the outer so your seams aren’t too bulky.)

10. Along the top edge pin the opening closed, making sure the seam allowance is folded under and even.

2. Put the outside fabric face down in front of you and place the wadding on top in the middle. There should be an even boarder of fabric around the edge of the wadding. If your wadding is iron-on then iron it in place now, otherwise pin and sew it in place running your stitches as close to the edge of the wadding as you dare.

11. Top stitch along the top edge (sew along the top edge close to the edge but straight and neatly). Go all the way around the top. This will sew the opening closed and add a nice finishing touch to your glasses case.

3. Put the two pieces of fabric together with right sides facing (put the lining fabric on the table with the right side up, then put the outer fabric on top of it with the wrong side face up, so the wadding is top of the pile).

12. Fold your glasses case so that the outer fabric faces out. Carefully match the edges and pin along the side and bottom edge. 13. Now, you need to sew the two sides together. Stitch the side and bottom edge 1cm from the edge. Then go back and add a second row of stitches just inside the last. This will give you two rows of topstitching and add strength to the seam. And you’re done: aquirky little glasses case to keep your specs safe. Feel free to pimp the pattern –you can add 3cms extra to the length of the case and put a button and ribbon to act as a closure.I’ve also added some spectacled applique to add a special something extra.On another version I did a curved top and a bit of zig zag stitching. Whatever you fancy!

4. Pin all the way around the outside of the fabric.

5. Sew around your fabric on all four sides with a 1.5cm seam allowance (sew 1.5cms away from the edge). Leave a 6cm gap along the top so you can turn your fabric right side out.

Tuesday's arrival of in-season bitter Seville oranges in the Low Sizergh Barn farm shop indicates that it is time to start marmalade making.

The oranges are grown organically on the Ave Maria farm in the heart of Spain's bitter orange growing region, where the orchards date back to the late 19th century and the increasing British appetite for marmalade. Although they are too sharp to eat raw, they can be transformed into one of the world's finest preserves with the simple addition of sugar, lemon and heat.

We wholly appreciate the farm's attention to the health of their soil and their organic growing methods - both of which produce a special flavour, aroma and purity in the fruit. This month's recipe is straight from the growers at Ave Maria who better to advise on the perfect marmalade making approach?

METHOD

Wash the fruit and cut the oranges in half. Squeeze out the juice and the pips. Tie the pips in a muslin bag. Cut the peel into shreds. Put the pip bag into a bowl with the orange and lemon juice, water and peel. Cover the bowl and leave to soak for 24-48 hours Transfer the mixture to a pan and cook gently until the peel is soft (approx 1.5 hours). Remove the bag of pips and squeeze gently. Take the pan from the heat and add 1lb of sugar for every pint and stir until dissolved. Return the pan to the heat and bring to the boil. Boil rapidly until setting point* is reached. Spoon into sterilised jars.

*Setting point test: spoon a little marmalade onto a cold plate, allow to cool, push gently at the edge and if wrinkles form it is at setting point.

Grange Methodist The second Tuesday in December was the Grange Methodist Network Carol Service and Christmas Celebration. After a carol service and meditation, where the ladies took part, a special afternoon tea was served and enjoyed. The opening of the Spring session was on 9th January, when Mick Malkin was the speaker. On Sunday, 17th December, the Toast church presented their Nativity, which was compiled by Paul Rand. This was a modern slant, brought up to date by modern thinking and technology. We saw a garage, instead of a stable, all that was available on the website booking pages, Joseph at work, using an electric drill, road workers instead of shepherds and astrophysicists instead of kings. Rev Jo Rand brought things together by showing how in art, down the ages, pictures had taken on modernity, of the times and the artists. The children

and the story challenged us again. The children, who are active in the pantomime, held a carol service on the evening of 17th December, and afterwards went into the schoolroom to enjoy buffet refreshments. Before eating, three cheques were presented to charities from the proceeds of the panto. Then, the fun started and the greatest entertainment was in using a 2nd World War parachute for games. One young lady of 35 years taking part, remembered it from her days as a Brownie. Thanks to Jean and Mick Malkin for their work with and for, the Panto and children.

There have been two nights of carol singing around the residential and nursing homes of the area by members of the church, organised by Judith and Ray Booth, and there was a Carol service on the morning of Christmas Eve. Later, that evening there was a 7pm communion service, led by the Rev Jo Rand.

An Invitation to The Women’s World Day Of Prayer On Friday 2nd March, 5000 services will be held around the world, and one of them will be in the Methodist Church in Grange! Involving 3 million people, this is an inter-denominational service which each year is devised by women from different countries of the world. The theme for this year is ‘All God’s creation is very

Each of the members to be baptised spoke of how they had been led to ‘take the plunge’ and what it meant to them even at this ‘later’ stage of life. Just before Christmas some of our members were invited to a Christmas celebration by the staff and boys of Fell House Home and School in Grange. There was a very impressive and memorable production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ and a demonstration of yoga movements reminding us of Christmas. A lovely

buffet was on offer afterwards and a chance to get to know some of the boys. Our thanks go out to Clair, Amanda and all the staff at Appletree Fell House who do a brilliant job ‘day in day out’.

A Grand Entrance We recently cleaned the carpets for a customer who had, by their own admission, a very ‘hectic’ lifestyle. Well, with four children, two dogs and a home to run it was hardly surprising that their carpets had taken a bit of a battering, particularly the hallway where everyone came charging in and out. (They also have a couple of goldfish, but I don’t think they contributed to the state of the carpets!) On the ‘Grange Drama’ Grapevine Hay Fever by Noel Coward is our next Open Play Reading which will take place on Wednesday 21st February at 7.30 pm in Grange Institute. It seems that the timeline of our play reading evenings is edging ever backwards; from the 1930–40’s world of the Ashington miners to the ultra bohemian 1920’s in which one of Noel Coward’s best known plays is set. Last year proved to be a fantastic year for GAOS, beginning in late February/early March, when the society put on its first ever production of South Pacific. What a fantastic show and what a good time was had by all members! In December, it was the turn of the younger members to delight audiences when they staged their pantomime: Dick Whittington & his Cat. Another fantastic show from our very talented youngsters. Grange Operatic is a members of NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) and, as such, both shows have gained several nominations for the NODA North West District 11 Season 2017 Awards ceremony to be held in Barrow on 2nd February. Winners will go forward to the North West Area awards to be held in May.

News of the 2018 All England Theatre Festival is slowly emerging. Final details are awaited about a proposed move of the Preliminary Round of this One Act Play competition from Grange over Sands, its Cumbrian regional base for the last several years, to a new

venue over the Pennines Washington Arts Centre in Sunderland and Durham.

The idea of Radio Plays, a rehearsed reading of actors grouped around a BBC style free standing microphone with accompanying background sound effects and music, is still circulating. First concert of the season to raise funds for hall Grange over Sands and District Concert Club’s 2018 programme begins earlier this year, on Friday 9 March at 8pm, for a special reason.

An additional concert has been arranged to raise funds for the Victoria Hall and purchase additional staging which will extend the scope of performances and enhance the audience’s view. The talented Ulverston Victoria High School Swing Band will take us on a musical journey from the golden age of swing to modern jazz under the direction of Richard Butler who was awarded the MBE in this year’s New Year’s Honours list for his achievements with the band. Please come and support this cause. Admission £10. We are hoping to encourage more young people to enjoy classical music and for the first time have organised an afternoon concert on 7th July especially for children who attend our local primary schools. Another first for the club occurs on 1st June when internationally renowned pianist Sam Haywood performs the world première of his new work “Nocturne” composed especially for our concert.

Author promises royalties to Victoria Hall This new collection of verse, by Alan Forsyth called ‘Time & Tide’ follows his previous collection, ‘Waypoints’ which was published in 2014.

The author has very generously offered the royalties from the book to the Friends of Victoria Hall.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the seventy six poems draw on the writer’s still active life and all the events which impinge on our lives today, both individually and as a community. Having retired from his last ‘day-job’, on his 90th birthday in 2017 this book draws upon a wealth of experience of life, without frontiers. Indeed, if there is a theme running through it all, the removal of frontiers, particularly in the mind, can be detected without much mental effort. It is clear that this poet has a commitment to the need for reason and a desire to see respect for human life governing more of our actions, but the sense of the ridiculous is never far behind. Pomposity gets short shrift and moments of calm and the image of sunny childhood days, albeit with a touch of sadness, is always present. This is all new work since 2014 and comes at a cover price of £8 and, as stated above, all royalties will go towards the Victoria Hall fund. Happy New Year - the last few months have been filled with a wide range of activities, culminating in an amazing December. October

The calm period before the busy months of November and December - we spent October making a range of arts and crafts, including Halloween and bonfire night decorations and a decoupage memory table. We had a visit from Lorraine Smythe who helped our residents make a special pumpkin flower arrangement for Halloween – it was spookily good!

November Our month began with our first visit by local ballet teacher Carla Pinchen, we are pleased she will be teaching regular ballet classes at the Old Vicarage. It was onto bonfire night, we had fireworks and a great bonfire, with friends and families attending and there was soup, hotdogs, gingerbread and mulled wine to keep us going. Thank you to everyone for the generous donations for Macmillan Cancer Support.

We started the month with a visit to see the lights in Cark.We always think that they can’t better the display from last year but they do!

In the middle of the month we had our Residents’ Christmas Party with music from John Mario and lots of singing, dancing and great food.

We went to choose a Christmas tree from Stribers Farm and our residents decorated The Old Vicarage, Lorraine Smythe helped our residents make beautiful wreaths which they put up. There was lots of music with the Montessori schoolchildren performing their nativity play and Allithwaite Primary singing carols - some of our residents also attended the school’s end of term concert.

It was also a very musical month with an unexpected concert from Rachel Mercer, a musical performance by the Nostalgia Singers and harvest songs sung by Allithwaite Primary School. The residents loved them all. One Friday we also had fish, chips & mushy peas in paper from a local chippy. Nothing quite beats it.

We also had our Macmillan Coffee Morning that month with lots of cakes, coffee, games and raffle. We raised £250 from both events. We started on our Christmas decorations and Lorraine Smythe returned to help our residents make cards to send to their families. Rachel Mercer visited, this time for a planned concert and we had a great time singing along. Bon Marche visited and our residents bought lots of clothes for winter as well as some presents for Christmas.

We sponsored a Christmas Lego competition at the school and our residents chose winners from the wonderful entries, with Lego vouchers as prizes. Just before Christmas Jean Marks visited and entertained us with an accordion concert. And on Christmas Day, Santa came, there was lot of presents and a three-course meal and wine to enjoy.

Allithwaite Primary After an amazing Christmas, the pupils at Allithwaite have started the new term with ‘Hope’. Our Christian value for this term has prompted some careful consideration for the meaning of hope and how we can live our lives in a hopeful way. The Nursery and Reception children have produced some fantastic writing based on the book ‘The Terrible Greedy Fossifoo’, where they thought about their hopes for our classroom and friendships. We are now in the process of organising a big fundraising event with the

church and local community to raise monies for the Children of Hope charity. Nathan and Reegan Porter, who decided to do a reverse advent calendar, found out that they raised 39 meals for Barrow foodbank. We are all

inspired by their amazing thoughtful act. The Year One children took part in the Cartmel Peninsula Cluster multiskills event and thoroughly enjoyed working with children from our local primary schools. Some of our very talented running club pupils took part in the highly challenging Casterton Cross Country. The children ran through treacherous terrain with hundreds of pupils from other schools. Their determination was amazing and the wonderful attitudes they showed towards encouraging and praising each other. We are very proud.

Get writing kids! It’s 500 word season again. In 2011, Radio Two DJ, Chris Evans set up a competition to get youngsters excited about reading and writing, and, over the past seven years, the competition has received 750,000 entries. To support this fantastic competition, Grange Now will print, in full, all the entries from our catchment area which get into the final 50. Flookburgh Primary Our Spring term has gotten off to a rather unusual start! Staff, children and some parents of Flookburgh CE Primary School spent their Christmas holiday being photographed reading in unusual places. This is a part of the school’s development plan to enhance reading within school as well as to encourage reading for pleasure. Our children now know that this can take place anywhere

and everywhere! Some places included: up a tree; in a dog basket; in a wheelbarrow and in a running shower! Emma Nelson, a pupil in Year 5 said: “I enjoyed doing the reading challenge because it was fun and exciting but embarrassing as well. Lots of people from our school have their photos on the wall.” This term, we are exploring two new themes. By delving into the Christian Value of Hope, our children are understanding that hopes are not just about gaining things for ourselves, but have wider implications of self-

Grange Primary It was great to welcome our new nursery children back in January and all are settling well. If you wish to have a look around our Nursery then please get in touch and arrange an appointment or watch out for our open mornings. Our Year 1 children were fortunate to go to Cartmel Priory School on 18th January for an afternoon of Multiskills led by CPS students. They practised ball skills, balancing, relays and improving control and accuracy and a great afternoon was enjoyed by all. Some of our KS2 children enjoyed a trip to Casterton Prep School to take part in Cross Country in very muddy conditions – great sportsmanship shown by all and we were pleased that one of our runners has now been selected to trial for Cumbria! Our Rotakids hosted an ICT and iPad afternoon on 8th January for the Grange Rotary Club who were invited to come and join us to learn more about how technology is used in school. The children were very eager to share their ICT skills and plan to hold another event to show the Rotary members how they can use their ipads at home.

Looking for budding young poets improvement and seeing benefits in others and the wider world. To launch this term’s learning theme of ‘Innovation, Ingenuity and Inspiration’, the whole school is about to venture off to seek inspiration at Grange Fell Allotments. No doubt we will come back eager to get gardening. More news about this trip next month!

Young poets throughout Cumbria are asked to write about “Deep Waters” to celebrate World Heritage status for the Lake District. It’s the theme for this year’s Wordsworth Young Poets competition organised by the family of Britain’s greatest poet who lived at Rydal Mount near Ambleside. It is open to all young people of school age in the county.

Acorn Montessori The children at Acorn Montessori returned to school after an enjoyable Christmas Break to a very exciting new development.

The children have all settled back into nursery really well, and we welcome our new starters. We’ve been looking at cold weather and climates, the children have been very busy making a penguin display. We’re having a lots of fun in the mud kitchen, making pirate pies and puddings, this then progressed onto making a pirate ship, and doing mark making treasure maps and flags.

Two wonderful ladies, Ro and Debs from Wood Matters, came to build a Willow Tunnel in the outdoor play area. The children were told why willow had been chosen to make the tunnel and how it grows. They then helped to plant the canes and watched with amazement as the ladies wove the canes

together to create a beautiful lattice construction for them to play in. They learnt that tunnel will become a living structure, that in the Spring, shoots will appear and their tunnel will turn green, transforming it into a more secretive space for their play.

Preparing for the future Whilst achieving excellent exam results ensures many of our students achieve future success, it is essential that every student is also equipped with the skills, attitudes and understanding to be successful.

This week we’re making play dough snowmen, welly print snowmen and investigating ice.

In school our early years class have also been investigating the cold which has included making freezing fruit shakes, inventing snowmen games and making our own white paint. It’s amazing seeing the children motivated to try and succeed whilst following their own interests.

In Years 1 and 2 this half-term the children are working on a North America topic. We are looking at globes and satellite images to find out about the

Cartmel Primary Children at Cartmel CE Primary School have been getting creative in lots of different ways at the start of the Spring Term. Pupils throughout the school have been learning the art of willow weaving with the help of experts at Kendal-based Woodmatters. They are already enjoying the results of their work with the creation of a willow tunnel in our outdoor area, giving younger children a fun new place to play. We will be further enhancing the area with a new greenhouse and improvements to our garden with the help

of Cartmel restaurant L’Enclume. We may soon be the only school in the country to boast a Michelinstarred vegetable garden! A group of children have meanwhile been rehearsing with the Cartmel Priory Choir for not one but two musicals, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and Captain Noah and His Floating Zoo, staged at the end of January.

There are many different pathways which our students take when they leave school, both academic and vocational. This month we have been to the climbing wall at Kendal, had a talk from our sponsor, ‘Unsworth’s brewery’ and been for a sports night at Ulverston astroturf. We are also starting to prepare for this year’s upcoming events. The annual young farmers field day being the first. This is where members put everything they learn throughout the year to the test

Allithwaite Running Club If you’re in the London Marathon, training should be well under way. But what if you just thought of getting out and fitter? There’s still the opportunity to get out running with Allithwaite Running Club. Although the nights are still dark, the club head torches have helped illuminate paths for quite a few people recently; whilst we’ve had a fantastic increase in runners joining us recently, lots of people joined us between spring and autumn last year. You’re always welcome! Great results from every runner in our annual January ‘Sands chase’, where each person sets off at a time they think they’ll need to run a 6 mile course around Grange to arrive back at midday. Without fail, everyone underestimated their time and fitness as a result of running with us last year, some by a considerable margin. We’ve seen some wonderful improvements in everyone’s running, whether aiming to knock a couple of minutes off a half marathon time, building stamina to run up our many hills, or even seeking encouragement for an ultra. We aim to run at a pace which matches everyone’s needs, so faster runners ‘loop’ around to encourage those at a slower pace. Caroline Blee presided at a well attended meeting with 3 visitors.The Resolutions were voted on.It was suggested that, as a fundraiser, members might bring good quality unwanted accessories eg scarves, handbags, jewellery and hats for a “sales” table.

Joint winners of the annual competition were Jean Mallinson, Jacky Ratcliffe and Jean Hudson.The next meeting will consist of demonstrations of different crafts by four members.

The speaker, Philip Caine, told us about his adventurous life from catering college in Barrow to building accommodation blocks for 30,000 men for the US army in Baghdad. Along the way he worked as a chef in various hotels and on the North Sea Oil Rigs.He had 18 months in Algeria, 3 years in Nigeria, 4 years in Kazakhstan building accommodation blocks. He went broke after a Scottish venture failed. He was next in Baghdad for 2 years and paid off his debts. Dubai beckoned and wife Sandra came too.Two years then back to Barrow. He now writes books and has had five published.

In the first meeting of the New Year members enjoyed a talk given by Colin Milner on ‘Morse’s Oxford’. The pictures of the colleges, buildings, fascinating old streets invoked memories of the popular tv series although we were assured that Oxford really doesn’t have that many murders. It also brought back memories for several members who had lived and worked in the city at some stage in their lives. The speaker at the next meeting on February 6th is Julia Hoggard who will be giving a talk called, ‘The Beekeeping Year.’

On 9th January Christine Robinson, recently retired Head Housekeeper at Chatsworth House, gave an illustrated lecture entitled ‘The Housekeeper’s Tale’. In her highly entertaining and informative talk she spoke about her family’s connection with the Chatsworth estate dating back into the 19th Century and her own personal involvement with Chatsworth and the Cavendish family over forty years. She described the layout of the house and the estate, touched on the history (including the 1st Duke), and took her audience behind the scenes with the day-to-day care of the house and the extensive cleaning that went on during the winter closed period, (delicate work where the antique porcelain and the chandelier in the Great Dining Room were concerned). She remembered the spectacular parties held there and poignantly recalled her close association with Deborah, the 11th Duchess, and how caring and hands-on she, the 11th Duke and their son the 12th Duke were in the running of the estate and in receiving visitors. On 6th February architectural historian Jon Cannon talks about English medieval cathedrals, and on 13th February Brian Wilson’s subject is ‘Barrow’s Boys and Other Polar Explorers’. Cartmel and District Flower Club held their Annual Lunch at the Grange Hotel on Monday 15th January 2018. The delicious meal was well attended by members, who were then entertained by an excellent speaker, Victor Hindle. The next meeting of the Flower Club is at 2pm on Monday 19th February 2018 at Cartmel Village Hall where the demonstrator will be Norma Halpin. Grange Probus Club enjoyed an informative talk from Diane Hewitt on the National Gardens Scheme, where private gardens are opened to the public. Diane is the NGS county organiser for Cumbria and she explained the origin of the scheme in the 1920s to raise funds for pre-NHS Health Visitors. Cumbria has an extensive annual programme of open gardens and raised £62,000 in 2017. The £3 million raised nationally by NGS provides donations of up to £500,000 each to charities such as MacMillan Cancer Care, Marie Curie, Hospices UK and various bursaries. The club’s next meeting will be held on Monday, February 12th at 10.30am in the Netherwood Hotel, when Lynn Matthews will talk about “Dogs

Iceland in Winter A cold picture was painted by David Bibby, a true lover of this country. He took us on a journey from Reykjavik to places of dramatic scenery, with geysers and glaciers on the menu. His photos of Iceland, which included the grandeur of the Northern Lights, were first class. Windermere’s Lakes Shore Villas.

This talk by Diana Matthews was a historic cornucopia of grand houses and estates dating back to the 1700’s. We were informed of the costs of building such houses and the great personages behind, for example, Brathay Hall, Wray Castle, Langdale Chase, Belle Island On Windermere, etc. Diana’s knowledge and insight into the many families involved was thorough and entertaining.

After the goodwill and happiness that represents Christmas, we sadly have to report that the Rotary Wishing Well Charity Collection facility on the promenade was broken into, vandalised and its contents stolen. This

was not an isolated incident as various Charity Collection Boxes, including our own, scattered around the town’s shops, have also been stolen by,it is suspected, the same feckless criminal.

On 8 January members visited Grange Primary School for computer lessons from our RotaKids.They came back with tales of how smart and savvy these youngsters are ,interacting as they do regularly, with their peers far and wide across the globe. On 10 January a Frugal Lunch was hosted by Nigel and Celia McCulloch, at which a fine broth with accompanying fresh breads, was enjoyed by about 20 members, the event raising £200 for charity.

Long standing member and twice President Tony Varley, Senior Partner at the Aynsome Manor Hotel,Cartmel,enthralled the audience with his life story in catering and hotel management. He originally planned to be a dentist, but had no regrets about opting for his plan B, which included spells in Blackpool, Southport, Ashby-de -la Zouch, Scotland and Glenridding on Ullswater, closer to home. At the January Meeting we discussed the resolutions for 2018, the members started with a quiz to see what their knowledge was as to this years 5 topics for voting, Sue Needham gave out the proposals for each resolution and arguments for and against each one. Votes were taken we await been advised as to which resolutions will go forward for debate at the May meeting. Enid and Stella gave an interesting talk on what goes on behind the scenes in preparation for the Westmorland Show and to finish 3 members performed a light hearted sketch as County Chair, WI President and member of WI which caused much laughter amongst the members. 2018 is a significant year for women. In 1918 after a long campaign for suffrage, some women over 30 got the right to vote for the first time. Many of the suffragettes were active in the new WI movement and 1918 saw the first WI Resolution – the beginning of a 100 years of WI campaigns. So if you are feeling inspired and want to join the WI – this could be one of the best years to do so. Our local branch in Grange is really starting to develop and grow. In addition to our monthly meetings we have lots of outings and social events. Our craft team will be gearing up for the summer shows and we now have a group of knitters who meet regularly and are currently knitting garments for a charity called ‘Knitting for Peace. Our programme for 2018 is on display in the Library and it offers a varied

We duly completed our sleigh programme and in general the weather was kind to us. We raised over £1,100 which we will be donating to local organisations over the next couple of months. During 2017 we raised just short of £8,000 which we donated to various organisations. Almost half went to organisations in Cumbria and within our local area, and we were able to respond to appeals from our international body, the Lions Clubs International Foundation, to funds for disasters round the world and at Grenfell Tower. We also provided support for young persons undertaking educational trips abroad and to others who needed specialist equipment owing to serious ill health. Finally, we provided funds for the education of orphaned children in Kenya and supported the Boxes of Hope programme.

We are a small and very focused team who enjoy each other’s company and would welcome with open arms anyone who would like to join in with our activities. We meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month and have regular social meetings in between. We also have a Friends group who support us and follow our activities. Group are keen to help As has been well-documented in this paper, Victoria Hall will lose its funding from South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) as of next year. To help make up this shortfall, a friends group has been set up to help raise funds to cover the shortfall.

The entirely voluntary group has put on several very successful events and is running monthly and weekly events on an ongoing basis. However, they are keen to point out that they are here to help anyone who would like to put on an event but isn’t sure how. A spokesperson for the group told Grange Now: “‘Support’ in our title means we can help with some things that event organisers can’t do, or would find difficult. We don’t just shuffle papers, stand back, and watch others do work to create their events in the Hall. We are able, willing, and keen to help. Please just ask. “For example, we can look after: ticket sales; seating/table arrangements; front-of-house services; refreshments;

hot/cold meals/suppers, bar provision, including staffing, stocking, and sales; clearing-up, including washing-up. We operate as a community service, and our input is staffed by VHSG-member volunteers and costs nothing. “The VHSG Committee will consider applications for financial help; money from any event that goes to the VHSG funds is agreed beforehand, and every penny goes into the Victoria Hall.

“So, if you are thinking about any sort of event, but organising it is putting you off, please have a chat with Sally Haines in the Grange Information Centre (015395 34026). Sally knows it all, including what the VHSG can do for you. If you want to see us in action, come along to the February event. Where’s Boris? Tom Ross, volunteer carer of the duck pond in Grange, has contacted Grange Now with some very sad news. He said, “It is with great sadness that I have to announce that Boris, the male Muscovy

duck, passed peacefully away on Saturday 9th December. He can no longer be seen strutting

his stuff around the pond.” Tom went on to say that this has left Boris’ companion Doris on her own and she appears to be lonely. Dear Editor, Most of us will have recently read of the serious problems encountered by seaside towns with the feeding of seagulls. Towns around the country have had to resort to legislation and substantial fines in order to curb the problems. Seagulls have been attacking and injuring both people and animals. Additionally, they bring huge problems with dirt and disease.

The droppings are known to contaminate food and water when a diseased bird defecates into a human food or water source. Besides direct contamination, airborne spores from drying faeces in air ducts and vents can settle on exposed food and transfer disease. Several thousand cases of food poisoning (salmonella) every year are attributed to this form of disease transmission. If you are concerned at this and the health problems that will undoubtedly follow I would urge you to write to the Council, before this unseemly practice gets out of hand. Name and address supplied

Dear Editor, A thought for the New Year!

Wouldn’t it be great if Grange had a small mini bus to operate round and about the town? To pick up and down when and where we need it. We would have to pay for it but we could keep our independence. I believe it is almost impossible to book a taxi for short journeys. The medical centre is too far for many to reach without transport and the local bus is inconvenient and infrequent. We rely on the Community Car Scheme and the goodwill of the volunteers. What would we do without them? We miss Kenny on a daily basis since his retirement and Jim Brodie has now also retired. He will also be missed after so many years of carrying us around Grange. Maybe we should consider modern technology, make history and go for a driverless taxi! Be careful what you wish for! Dear Editor SLDC is running a consultation on the latest version of Grange-overSands’ Neighbourhood Plan.

Sections 3.5 and 5.19 deal with drainage and flooding. They include welcome additions about drainage problems but still have key omissions. For instance,the cause of these problems is the unique combination of:natural drainage channels in the underlying limestone, local topography, the coastal railway embankment preventing surface rainwater run-off from flowing into Morecambe Bay, and the lack of spare capacity in our Victorian combined sewer. This information needs to be added as does a requirement for comprehensive hydrological surveys to confirm that future developments, on allocated land, will not cause, or exacerbate flooding. Section 5.1 deals with transport and accessibility but it does not

mention the need to improve traffic flow in the centre of Grange-overSands. Why? Consideration of a one-way system and/or imposition of a weight/width restrictions for through traffic have the potential to improve traffic flow and parkingandought to be in the Plan. Residents have fought for the reinstatement of Berners bridge (a Right of Way)but it is not mentioned in our Neighbourhood Plan. A recent report to SLDC identified its reinstatement as necessary for the success of any lido project. Why has it been left out?

If you agree that the plan would be improved by addressing these, or other omissions,please submit your comments to SLDC by 5 pm, 22 February 2018.
