Letter from the Editor Blimey, the Christmas tree is hardly down and before you know it, Mother’s day is almost here and we are racing towards Easter. This month, we are excited to introduce a brand new feature, ‘Looking Back’. We will be stepping back in time, revisiting old photos from our archive, kindly provided in large part by Grange Civic Society, and piecing together interesting parts of our local history, hopefully with the help of your good selves! Despite our digging around on the internet we still have lots to learn, so we need your help in finding out more about these photographs. Do you know anything more? Perhaps you have old photographs of your own that you would like to share with fellow readers. If so please get in touch! As we go to press it looks like planning has been passed for what was the artists studio on the prom. The new owners hope to be ready for Easter - more details next time. Wishing all our Mums a very Happy Mothers Day, especially my mother Mrs. Ann Plumb. Thanks Mum - you’re the best. Thanks to all the fabulous team who produce Grange Now and who work hard to deliver relevant local news and support and promote community groups in our area. If your group or club has never been in touch for some free publicity then why not get in touch before the next deadline on Friday 16th March.

Jack Hill development angers residents - again! Applethwaite Homes, the builders behind the development at Jack Hill, Allithwaite, has infuriated residents once again by removing a section of an important hedgerow at the corner of Jack Hill and Holme Lane. All their plans, such as the one shown, included in their Design and Access Statement show that the Holme Lane hedgerow would be retained.

COVER STORY

The Year of the Dog The Beach Hut Gallery has begun the first exhibition of the year with ‘A Dog for all Seasons’ the title was inspired by the Chinese New Year ‘The Year of the Dog’

Dog is man’s good friend who can understand the human’s spirit and obey its master, whether he is wealthy or not. The Chinese regard it as an auspicious animal. If a dog happens to come to a house, it symbolizes the coming of fortune. The invincible God Erlang in Chinese legend used a loyal wolfhound to help him capture monsters. Work on show features paintings, drawings and printmaking from well known local artists Tina

Balmer, Kate Bentley, Geraldine Braithwaite, Helen Entwisle, Ruth Green, Fionn Jordan, Laura Pendlebury, Geoff Waterhouse and Beverley White. All the artists taking part are ‘rescue’ dog owners and hope to raise some money for particular dog rescue charities. Xin nian kuai le ! (Happy New Year).

Investment Matters

By Gary Richardson FCIB, APFS The introduction of pension freedoms in April 2016 meant that it was no longer necessary to buy an annuity with your pension fund at retirement. Instead it was possible to use a system called ‘flexi access drawdown’ to access your pension to provide an income in retirement. There are some disadvantages but there are many advantages, not least the ability to pass on the residual value of your pension pot to nominated beneficiaries on your death. Please note, however, that not all old style pension plans are compatible with the new rules – just because new rules exist does not mean they will automatically apply or be available to your pension. This in turn means the reality could be very different to what you thought would apply. It is generally possible to convert old style plans to benefit from the new rules, but please do check. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. District Council

I’m very grateful to Grange Now for asking me to do this column. The staff of Grange Now do a lot for this town and it is a privilege to be with them. A lot of you will know me a bit but I should say a word or two to introduce myself. I have lived in Grange for 10 years, having spent my working life in the Midlands and the NorthEast, mainly in the Probation Service. Some of you elected me to SLDC three years ago and the Council made me their chairman this year.

levels of council: the County Council, The District Council, and the town Council. But it’s the system that we’ve got and complaining about it isn’t likely to do any good. What is clear to me is that we have some good people working for us and that is certainly true at Grange Town Council. It’s easy for any of us to see the main problem facing all councils: they just don’t have enough money. And that leads to situations which range from annoying to downright dangerous: pot-holes in our roads, blocked drains, shortage of care for the elderly, etc.

Three years into being a councillor I still don’t really grasp why we have three

Dr Jim Hacking, GP in Morecambe Bay said: “The elderly and those with long term health conditions often feel isolated, which can lead to ill health.

“Check if they are feeling well, particularly if they don’t seem their usual self or they look unwell. “Make sure their home is heated to at least 18°C to 21°C throughout the winter.

“If you do know of anyone who is feeling unwell encourage them to visit their local pharmacist or call 111 and a trained NHS healthcare adviser will be able to help them.”

“Ensure they are eating well and have a good supply of essential and store-cupboard food to keep them going. “Encourage them to get heating and cooking appliances safety checked.

Proposal to change confusing name

Parish Clerk, Deb Cowperthwaite, has been in touch with Grange Now about a proposal to change the name of Upper Allithwaite Parish Council.

“For many years there has been confusion regarding the name of our Parish being Allithwaite Upper, this has been main due to the similarity in name as Lower Allithwaite Parish, however as we have no geographical connection to ‘Allithwaite’ as the villages in the parish are Lindale and Low and High Newton. “It seems appropriate to consider a name change that represents the geographical location and identity of the parish more clearly. Following

a consultation as part of the Community Plan review in 2017 78% of respondents felt this was important and supported the proposed name to “Lindale and Newton in Cartmel Parish” “The Parish Council now intends to seek consent from SLDC who has the power to change the name of a Parish and Parish Council pursuant to Section 25 of the Local Government Act 1972. We hope to proceed with the statutory process of changing the parish name in April 2018.”

If you have any comments or queries, please contact the clerk: Debra Cowperthwaite 07792 787 070 / 015395 33091 or clerk@allithwaiteupperpc.net

Up for Auction

Fabergé trophy mistaken for useful box. A Leyland Motors employee in the 1960s and 1970s was granted permission to take home a box because it was of a useful size. The history of it long forgotten and now coated in grime, it had been lying around the office unappreciated. It proved very useful, being used as a Christmas tree holder, an umbrella stand and

even a coal box. Until, that is, the Flog It! team discovered that the ‘box’ is actually a 1920s Fabergé trophy. The present owner, the employee’s son, once bumped it with his car when it was sat on the garage floor. It is missing a foot, and a piece. Nevertheless, it is going to auction with us carrying a £1,000 - £1,500 estimate.

A Russian speaking client of ours translated its inscription and confirmed that Leyland Motors received it for a mileage competition. It signs off with the Communist Manifesto’s ‘Proletarians of All Countries, Unite!’.

Eight Ramblers took part, starting from Crag Bank along the Lancaster canal towpath all the way to Hest Bank, across the railway line and then back towards Carnforth along the path at the edge of the shore. A short detour was made after lunch to visit the Bay View Garden Centre to browse around and visit the tea rooms where just one portion of coffee walnut cake was sufficiently large to share between six. It was then back to the shore path to comlete the walk. This was a relatively easy, 6.5 mile walk which provided an excellent day’s outing.

GROWN WITH RANDOM LOVE

March. Although it might still get frosty, it might still snow and you’ll definitely, definitely see plenty of rain. It’s the month that officially heralds the beginning of spring (20th March to be precise.) Obviously, the signs of spring have been with us for a while, it’s this month when things finally start to warm up and hopefully (touch wood, cross fingers, genuflect, put on lucky pants) dry out a bit. There’s plenty to get on with

1. From the car park (grid ref: 486 692) follow the cycle route signed to the canal, pass bridge number 125 on the left, turn right along the towpath towards Morecambe. Continue for just over one mile passing the Royal Hotel’s beer garden on the right.

5

2. Continue along the path, Bolton church steeple appears through the houses on the left over the canal. Pass bridge number 120 - the Hatlex Swing Bridge which provides access to a private house.

during this season straddling month; but do make sure you’ve finished all of last season’s work. It’s the last chance saloon for pruning and mulching empty beds, but then you can turn your attention to tasks for the year ahead.

Give the whole plot a really good weeding; dig out the perennial weeds before they get their feet too far under the table and begin your hoeing regime to get rid of the ephemerals. It’s worth putting a bit of effort in now to really get on top of them so you don’t end up feeling overwhelmed later. Bittercress and Chickweed fairly jump out of the ground, with the former seemingly taking days to grow and explosively (admittedly small in the scheme of explosions) pop it’s seeds all over the shop.

Turn left along the pavement then cross the road to return to the car park. This is an easy, half day walk with a variety of Pubs and Tea Rooms.

If you have a strawberry patch it’s time to give it a good tidy up, remove the slug harbouring dead and damaged leaves and any runners that you don’t want. It’s natural to want to keep them but too many in too tight a space will reduce your crop; ideally you want no more than one plant to a square foot. When you’ve finished sorting them out give them a mulch of well rotted compost.

There may be days that genuinely feel quite warm, (I had my first Cumbrian sun burn one March) but they can often be followed by sub zero nights so it’s important to think about protecting any young plants you may plant out. Protect them with plastic or fleece cloches and pop a few slug pellets down as slugs and snails will become much more active as the soil warms up.

FOOD & DRINK

Celebrating the GREAT BRITISH PIE The great British Pie is undoubtedly one of the icons of British cuisine. Savoury or sweet, eaten hot or cold, new research states that 75% of Brits enjoy a pie at least once a month (and no, the survey wasn’t conducted in Grangeover-Sands!). Although, this statistic would tie in nicely with our sales data from 2017 which told us that through the shop alone, we sold in excess of 185,000 pies last year. Admittedly 30,000 of them were sausage rolls – which is not strictly a pie! We aren’t quoting pie facts for nothing though. This month we’re celebrating British Pie Week (5th – 13th March) in style; starting with attendance at the Lancashire Pork Pie Appreciation Society Awards evening who named our Pork Pie as ‘Best Overall Pork Pie’ in their hotly contested 2017 League Table. We will

be hoping for similar success with our ‘Family Pork Pie’ at this years British Pie Awards announced on 7th March in Melton Mowbray. (Please keep your fingers crossed for us!)

Matching Food & Wine Matching food and wine can be a difficult thing to do, get it wrong and your wine can taste metalic and harsh. Get it right and it’s fabulous.

We couldn’t go through British Pie Week however without running some exclusive offers; the perfect excuse for you to tuck into one of our piping hot, golden pies on a cold evening:

In the Takeout: Pie, peas, chips & gravy for £4! (The above offers will be available all British Pie week, on a first come first served basis)

South Indian Garlic Chicken As we wait for the natural warmth of Spring to arrive, we can relish in the welcome heat provided by well chosen spices and a touch of chilli in our dishes. Mr Vikkis, creator of hot sauces, chutneys, curry pastes and pickles, is a popular local supplier to Low Sizergh Barn and he’s just been placed in the USA World Hot Sauce awards.

Champagne and fish and chips – marvellous, the acidity of the Champagne cuts through the fat of the fish and chips. Dessert Wine with puddings and cheese. (try it instead of port with cheese you will be pleasantly surprised)

Sauvignon Blanc with fish or roasted vegetables. Bordeaux Red or Rioja Crianza with lamb.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Roast Beef or maybe a full Rioja or Bordeaux.

4 X Meat & Potato Pies or 4 x Cheese & Onion Pies for just £6! 4 x Midi Pork Pies, 4 x Steak Ale & Stilton Pies or 4 x Chunky Steak Pies for £10!

Made for each other

The basics White wines tend to pair better with lighter foods such as veggies, fish and white meat.

Sparkling wines can match a variety of foods as these can refresh your palate. Try and stay away from red wine with fish, unless the fish is very rich. Medium bodied reds can be a match with some white meats as well as red meats and cheese.

Hard to match foods Asparagus, Green Beans, Artichokes, Chocolate and eggs.

If you’re having a dinner party and would like some help matching your menu with your wine, pop me an email, I will try and point you in the right direction.

Happy matching The Unassuming Wino

This month, we’re recognising his skill in a recipe that features his garlic pickle. Mr Vikkis (Adam) recommends opening your windows for the first step to let some of the unseasonal heat escape. INGREDIENTS

4 chicken breasts from Herb Fed, Yorkshire 1 large white onion (chopped) I jar/carton passata 100ml Lancashire rapeseed oil 1 jar Mr Vikkis garlic pickle 10g garlic paste 10g ginger paste 5g turmeric 5g fenugreek 5g cumin seeds 5g chilli powder 3 green chillies (chopped) 1 green pepper (chopped) 1 red pepper (chopped) Fresh coriander to garnish Salt & pepper

METHOD

1. Heat the oil in a pan and add the onions, fenugreek, cumin seeds, and green chilli. 2. Cook the onions until they turn golden brown, then add the garlic and ginger pastes, red chilli powder and turmeric. Stir and add the passata and Mr Vikkis garlic pickle. 3. Heat through, then add the sliced chicken breast and chopped peppers. Once the chicken is cooked, sprinkle the dish with fresh coriander and serve with rice.

POSTLETHWAITES (GRANGE) CLOSING DOWN SALE 50% OFF ALL STOCK

It has been a difficult decision predominantly due to an increase in business rates. A heartfelt "thank you" to Geoff, Ann and Jeanette who will be taking a very well earned retirement. A special mention to Steve and Fiona for their hard work also. Helen and I will move our office to the Chapel of Rest on Nutwood Crescent and carry on our family funeral business. The shop has brought a lot of enjoyment with the people we have met and stories we have had through the years! On behalf of all at Postlethwaites we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your loyal and continuous support in our 63 years of trading. It has been a pleasure! Yours sincerely, Alan Postlethwaite

The Priory congregation were pleased to hear that their Advent Food Bank appeal supplied a total of 238 meals. At the end of January a fun afternoon was had at the Priory when an ‘open rehearsal’ of Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo and an abridged version of Joseph and his Amazing Dreamcoat were presented to a lively and appreciative audience. As is becoming the style of the Priory this was a real community effort with the Priory Choir assisted by local enthusiastic singers, young people from both Cartmel schools plus parents and teachers of the primary school. Special thanks go to Sue

Hurray! Although we still have cold winds and icy showers, we can really see spring appearing in the gardens and the days are certainly a little longer. Lent is upon us and Easter eggs are in the shops! This shows it is OK to ‘give things up’ for Lent, but not to ‘give up’ on life. We will have a service on Maundy

Batchelor, John Shippen and Adrian Self for their enthusiasm and David Huggett and Matt Bacon for sound and light. The 11.00 am Service on Sunday February 11th was a celebration of love in its broadest sense. Fifteen recently married, or about to be married, Priory couples shared the Valentine celebration with appropriate marriage hymns and a traditional Eucharist with a modern twist. We are marking Lent this year, not only with the Stations of the Cross every Friday at 5.00pm, but with a daily reading from the lectern at 12 noon. It is hoped that our many visitors will welcome a few moments of reflection at this penitential time in the church’s year.

Thursday March 29th at 7.30pm and also prayer time on Good Friday. Then we will be celebrating the greatest Christian festival of Easter on April 1st at 10.30am at the URC. Please join us! On April 2nd we will hold our Coffee Morning at 10am –noon.

Also this month we are joining in with Moving Mountains. Watch out for posters. Something for everyone!

The rust is history We attended a property recently where the customer had asked us to clean all of the carpets in their home with the exception of the dining room; the reason they explained, was because of rust stains from metal table legs that a previous cleaning company had been unable to remove and they intended to replace that carpet. We asked the customer to let us try our process on it on a ‘no win no fee’ basis which they agreed to do. The results can be seen in the photos and as you might expect, the customer was delighted as it had saved them nearly £1,000 in replacement costs.

So if you have a carpet that you think can’t be ‘revived’ and are thinking of replacing it, give us a call first to see what we can do.

It could be a call that saves you ££££s We are a local, independent specialist carpet cleaning company. Utilising 21st century cleaning processes allied with state of the art equipment, we deliver exceptional results with carpets usually dry within 30 minutes of cleaning. We believe that our carpet cleaning system is probably the best currently available.

CHURCH NEWS

Marching On at St Peter’s Field Broughton

ADVERTORIAL

Lifting the Veil on Boarbank

March is going to be a busy month for St Peter’s and all the churches on the Peninsula. On Saturday 10th, as part of the Moving Mountains festival, St Peter’s will be hosting a tea in church from 2.30pm. The focus will be on a display featuring individual faith journeys in the parish. Christening or Wedding photos, favourite hymns, prayers, poems or passages of prose will be on show for all to share, bearing witness to the deep and lasting role faith and spirituality has in our lives. The weekend celebration concludes with our Mothering Sunday service at 9.30am on 11th.All Mums are invited for the distribution

Grange Methodist At the Women’s Network, at Grange Methodist Church, the topic for the meeting was NSPCC.

Mrs Sheila Tyson, President of the local branch, was there with ‘Buddy’, a cuddly cushion which is taken into schools by a local volunteer. The first part if the programme was relating something of the start of the society, by Rev Benjamin Waugh, a Settle man. From there, we heard up to date news of the continuing needs of the work of the Society. There is always a need for funds, and in Grange two special efforts are held every year. The local vet enhances the income by his donations from the spectacular Christmas lights installed in his garden, and the group are grateful for every donation and all interest. Elizabeth Armstrong was the pianist and Lilian Greenhalgh chaired the meeting. The new gathering, ‘The Well’ continues to grow. This is held on the second Saturday of each month, at 5 pm to 7 pm and is targeted for all ages. Families are most welcome. It is made up of music, topics, craft and a simple supper. Do come along and experience the fellowship of the group, you will be most welcome.

of flower posies, and we give thanks for all that our mothers have done for us – and this includes the traditional idea of the Mother parish. In years past this was a great opportunity to join families together for the day, being one of the few days off when those in domestic

service were able to return home. Also on 11th we remember Henry Keenan, the next name on our WW1 memorial to be honoured. On Saturday 24th the Parish Bounds will be beaten once again. (See website for details.)

St Paul’s

On Sunday 4th February Christmas formally ended as we celebrated Candlemas, and remember the presentation of the infant Jesus in the temple at Jerusalem. The nativity figures have been packed away, and we move from the Cradle to the Cross. The 40 days of Lent started on Ash Wednesday, 14th February. Palm Sunday crosses from last year were burnt and mixed with oil, and we were invited for the ‘imposition of ashes’, having the sign of the cross on our foreheads. To mark Lent, we are studying the book chosen by the Archbishop of Canterbury for his Lenten discipline this year - ‘Say it to God: in search of prayer’, written by Luigi Gioia, a Jesuit priest. We meet on the five Tuesday evenings in Lent for a simple supper, then split into groups to discuss a chapter, finishing by 8.30 pm for Compline, the service of Night Prayer. We have been planning the programme for Moving Mountains, the ecumenical mission throughout Cumbria 8th to 11th March, when we shall welcome Bishop Libby Lane – the first woman bishop in the Church of England – who is leading our group.

We only get one chance to get it right and at Boarbank, even though we know it is a very emotive subject, we tackle it head on. We discuss with our residents their end of life care because we want to get it right. We want to carry out their wishes so we plan ahead. The conversation is at their pace and we can revisit it as many times as they want, but we believe it is an important part of their care. Anticipation and planning for the inevitable means that our residents maintain control, where possible, right until the end. I urge you all not to avoid the conversation with your loved ones. Let them be able to grieve and avoid the anxieties of ‘is this what they would have wanted’. Telephone: 015395 32288 manager@boarbankhall.org.uk

Artist of the month Elizabeth Harrison

Our Artist of the Month gives a whole new meaning to multi-talented. Elizabeth is not only an accomplished performer, HGV, PVC driver and gardener, but she is also a qualified Graphic Designer who has recently taken over as designer for our sisterpaper, Ulverston Now. Born on a dairy farm near Chorley, she now lives on a dairy farm near Barrow with her partner, Graham. Elizabeth has established herself on the organ and keyboard concert circuit, not only as a musician, but also as an entertainer. Her varied musical repertoire, along with her cheerful Lancashire humour, has made her one

of the country’s favourite performers. Playing for over 30 years, she has a wealth of experience with both electronic and theatre organs and she is one of the busiest electronic and theatre organists in the UK. Originally taught by John Broadbent (son of former Blackpool Tower Organist Ernest Broadbent) and later by Chorley musician Jack Winston, she has committed thousands of pieces of music to memory. Her concerts and dances are well rehearsed and she performs music to suit all tastes and all presented with her own brand of light hearted humour. Elizabeth enjoys playing a mixture of popular music including famous songs

Allegri Singers

Allegri perform Palestrina’s glorious Pope Marcellus Mass and anthems from the 16th to the 21st Centuries. A wonderfully opulent work for six-part choir, the Mass was written in Rome in 1562, and has often been sung during Papal inauguration services. Between the mass sections Allegri perform a variety of works, with celebratory anthems by Gibbons and Sweelinck, and modern items by David Collins and Lauridsen. They end their programme with three anthems from the Romantic period by Mendelssohn, Bruckner and Rheinberger. Palestrina’s glorious Pope Marcellus Mass for six-part choir and a selection of unaccompanied anthems including by Gibbons, Mendelssohn and Bruckner. If you would like to see Elizabeth in action, put on your dancing shoes and go along to Allithwaite Community Centre on Saturday 24th March. Elizabeth told Grange Now, “I always play a wide variety of music and dances to suit everyone. If you don’t dance then that’s fine, just come along, where it’s warm and friendly, and enjoy listening to the music and eating delicious homemade refreshments! At the end of the night you’ll wish you’d been sooner and will be telling all your friends!” Elizabeth has the honour of performing music for the world famous Blackpool Dance Festival held in October at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool. This involves playing hours of live music for competition standard ballroom and sequence dancing and there’s hundreds of dancers and spectators in attendance over several days. Elizabeth is one of a handful of organists to play for old time dancing as well as popular ballroom and sequence dancing.

Elizabeth started running monthly charity shows in Leyland 7 years ago where thousands of pounds have been raised for local good causes with audiences of over 100 people each month enjoying performances by the UK’s finest electronic organists. Elizabeth said, “Some people think organ music is ‘old hat’ but they soon change their minds when they hear the kind of music that can be produced with today’s latest instruments.” For more details our Facebook page is Leyland In Tune. Elizabeth would welcome the opportunity to play music in the Cumbria and Lancashire area close to home for small or large functions, she has her own electronic organ which she takes around with her. She is available for wedding anniversary and birthday celebrations, dances, concerts, fundraisers etc.

To order CDs you can call Elizabeth at home 01229 831802 (evenings) mobile 07814 261983 or email: elizabeth_harrison@btinternet. com. If you’d like more information on the forthcoming dances in Allithwaite, please call Heather on 01539 533389.

LOOKING BACK This month, we are excited to introduce a brand new feature, ‘Looking Back’. If so please get in touch!

aberdashery shops are the most enticing stores in town for me - all those wonderful colours, textures, ribbons and buttons, like jewels in a jewellery box. The array of tools and notions can be breathtaking and my crafting arsenal is fairly extensive as a result (and because my great aunt was a haberdasher many moons ago and I was lucky enough to inherit some of her amazing collection). I’m often asked about my ‘sewing kit essentials’; SCISSORS - Every sewing kit benefits from three pairs of scissors (sounds excessive, but saves you money and time in the long run):

Needles - You need a good range of sewing needles, short, long, sharp, blunt, thick and thin. Buying a mixed pack which has a range of lengths is a good starting point.

Dressmaking shears: A pair of the best quality dressmaking shears you can afford. High quality scissors will cut your fabric easily and won’t hurt your hands if you are doing lots of cutting out. Only ever use them on fabric; never use them on anything else otherwise you’ll blunt them and risk damaging your precious fabrics.

Threads - The world of threads is colourful, wonderful but often confusing. If you are sewing a specific project then match your thread to the colour and type of fabric - cotton thread for natural fabric and polycotton for synthetic fabric (ask for help in the shop, don’t forget to take your fabric with you). Your basic sewing kit staples should consist of good quality thread in white and black. I find a dark grey also comes in really useful for a range of colours from green to blue.

Embroidery scissors: A really small pair of scissors with a sharp point, you’ll use these all the time to clip curves, snip threads and get into those difficult to cut corners. Household Scissors: These are the scissors which you’ll use for everything else.

A comfortable Quick Unpick - Get one which is dangerously sharp and feels comfortable in your hand, used to rip open seams and undo stitches when you’ve made a mistake, or when you’re altering a project.

Sharp pins - A decent box of pins will make your sewing easier and neater. My preference is for long pins with a glass bead end (ones with plastic ends don’t mix well with a hot iron, you’ll end up with melted plastic all over your project). Things for Measuring - A tape measure will be a must for dress making, a Perspex ruler will help with patterns, quilting and general alterations. If you really enjoy your sewing, then a yardstick may come in handy for bigger projects. Tailors Chalk / Fabric pens–The easiest way to draw out patterns or mark where fastenings will go is to use a fabric pen or tailor’s chalk. There are a range of options; I prefer chalk and I use both the triangles of chalk and the chalk ‘pencils’ which come with interchangeable refills. Iron - I know it’s not going to fit in your sewing kit, but all sewing projects need a good press at some stage, and having a good quality steam iron comes in handy for each project you do.

Happy Sewing NEXT MONTH: ‘DARN IT!’ Philippa will share her tips on upcycling and repairing

Bin it? No way!

Monthly art and craft fairs

What do you do when your favourite jumper gets a hole in it? Or when your toaster stops working? Or your computer runs slow? Or your phone screen gets cracked?

Once a month, between March and December (except August), a ‘totally handmade’ Craft and Art fair takes place in Cartmel Village Hall.

I’m taking it to the Repair Cafe

It’s easy to just throw it away and get a new one. Very many of the things we throw away could be repaired, or their life extended, but often we don’t know how. Grange churches are getting together to offer a ‘Repair Café’ on Saturday 10th March, 10am – 3pm, in the United Reformed Church hall, Kents Bank Road.If you have something broken, bring it along, and together we can see if we can mend it. There’s also time for a coffee and a chat. No charge.

Repair Café is an international movement of volunteers who run pop up café events to help people repair their own stuff. In offering these cafés, skills are being passed on, money is saved, things are kept out of landfill. And neighbours are getting to know one another better. For more information about Repair Café worldwide, see www. repaircafe.org This is not a professional repair service – all are volunteers with an interest in mending things, and more importantly, helping you to mend things for

yourself. We do not carry specific spare parts, so for example, if your phone screen needs replacing, you will need to buy a spare and bring it with you. But we do have a range of tools and the ability to find instructions online! And if it’s a job for the professionals, we can help suggest where to go. If you want to talk to us about an item before bringing it, do get in touch either through facebook, @RepairCafeGrange, or contact Rev’d Jo Rand, jo.rand@methodist.org.uk, or phone (015395) 33164.

It provides a showcase for creative people to show and sell their work and there is surely something for everyone with: silver and bead jewellery, wooden puzzles, products made from wool and various other fabrics. If you feel peckish, there is a selection homemade fudge, cakes and jams to tempt your tastebuds. If you would like exhibit your own work, a ‘2-metre’ stall costs just £16 a day. To book please contact Adele on 07469 772 871. The fairs take place on a Saturday and Sunday and the next one is on 17th and 18th March and entry is free.

SCHOOL REPORT

Lindale Primary & Preschool We have had a busy and exciting time over the past half-term. The arrival of the snow meant building igloos and being explorers, and led to lots of learning opportunities. Learning from first -hand experience is evident both at Lindale Pre-school nursery and at school.

Nursery have had a great week celebrating Julia Donaldson and reading lots of her books. After reading ‘The stickman’, the children went hunting for sticks, made their own stickmen and measured and painted with sticks. As the children move into Years 1 and 2, (KS1) there are still opportunities throughout each day to

Cartmel Primary It was a sporty first halfterm of 2018 for Cartmel CE Primary School, with children getting out for plenty of exercise, undaunted by the cold weather! Allithwaite Primary This month at Allithwaite, we have gotten tired of waiting for the weather to settle and have opened our reflection garden regardless! The children have enjoyed observing birds at the feeders, writing on our reflection board (in luminous chalk pens of course) and planting seeds. Moving into KS2, (Years 3-6) the same philosophy continues with practical activities and visual models supporting learning through maths mastery, exciting science experiments and trips linked to topics. Recently KS2, performed with several thousand other children in ‘Young Voices’ at

the Manchester Arena and performing our colourful and energetic Brazilian themed dance at Ulverston dance platform. Reading is very important throughout school. and Captain Noah and His Floating Zoo, singing along for a good crowd. There was a January party for all children in Cartmel’s Village Hall with a lively entertainer, and a disco for older ones hosted by the Priory School.

We have also been enjoying the company of others in the Cartmel community. In late January, a group of children participated in Cartmel Priory’s duo of musicals, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat

In between all of this extracurricular activity children have been fitting in some great lessons too! Class 2 have been getting particularly creative, learning how to weave and making tie-dye clothes.

moment’s pause and peace.

An extra special well done to our key stage one team who got medals and qualified for the next level, amazing!

We have been very impressed by our Eagle Owls class whom took part in the Ulverston Dance Platform. Their interpretative dance was amazing and they performed in front of a large audience with enthusiasm and professionalism. Very inspiring. We would like to give a special mention to all our gymnasts who took part in the recent Cartmel Peninsula competition. Their skill and determination was incredible.

In worship, we have enjoyed following the Children of Hope charity workers news from Uganda. We have been particularly moved by the amazing work that has saved a baby’s life and enabled the build of a new home for her and her family. The children all immediately wrote hopes and prayers for the family, some of which have since been achieved.

Students from Cartmel Priory School set off in a state of excitement and anticipation to visit the Amade region of Austria for the annual ski trip in January 2018. 34 pupils from Years 7-9 took part in a week’s ski course in the two local resorts of Flachau and Alpendorf. Pupils of all abilities skied in fantastic snow conditions throughout the week. Those new to skiing were doing red runs by the end of the week, whilst the advanced group skied from region to region each day covering many kilometres of piste, skiing as far away as Zauchensee. All pupils were assessed against ski competency criteria throughout the week, making great progress. Apres ski activities included swimming in Wagrain, dancing and dining out in Flachau, ten pin bowling in Salzburg and a presentation evening in Alpendorf. The children practised their language skills whilst shopping in Bischofshofen, a beautiful Alpine town in the Amade valley. Hotel accommodation was shared with other Cumbrian schools, with whom pupils enjoyed sampling the local cuisine and customs. It was a really great trip and everyone enjoyed it very much. It is always such a pleasure giving pupils this opportunity to develop an interest in what will hopefully be a lifelong recreational activity, as well as experiencing a different European culture. Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society

Dr. Mike Winstanley gave a talk to a full house on For Tortola: Quakers, Lonsdale merchants and West Indies 1750-1850.

Mike showed how important the West Indies trade with Britain was in that period. Lancaster and Liverpool were important ports but direct colonial trade was more important to Lancaster than the slave trade as many ships went via the Canary Islands rather than Africa.

There were many roles involved in the West Indian trade, which was considered both a risky and prosperous business. Various Quaker families from the Cartmel and Furness areas were involved in some capacity, connected to others through marriage or business. Quakerism was introduced to Tortola, British Virgin Islands, by James Birkett of Cartmel Fell, in the 1750s and there was a strong trading relationship between Lancaster and Tortola with materials for supporting a community going one way and sugar and cotton returning. The Rawlinson family originally from Rusland were more influential than most. Mike supported his fascinating talk with various research materials including letters, census, shipping registers, muster rolls, photographs, invoices and newspapers. Next lecture: Dr. Suzanne Tiplady: 300 years of schooling in Satterthwaite and Rusland on 1 March at 7.30 in Cartmel Village Hall

Grange Garden Society

Society members enjoyed an informative, illustrated “tour” of , our speaker, Alan Oatway’s South Lakeland garden at the well- attended January meeting. Although conditions in his garden are challenging and vary from exposed rock to shady woodland, a wide range of plants thrive. Alpine plants in which Alan has a special interest are well-represented throughout; choice specimens being cherished in raised beds and hardier varieties allowed to naturalize where happy.

Members, inspired to develop an interest in these beautiful plants were encouraged to visit the forthcoming regional Alpine Show in Kendal on March 17th.

The Society will hold its next monthly meeting on Friday 16th March at 2.00pm in the URC Hall, Kents Bank Road. Our speaker, Dr. Trevor Piearce of Lancaster University, will give an illustrated talk entitled “Victorian Naturalists and the Heyday of Natural History.” Members are invited to bring along items of interest for the display table. Visitors are welcome.

Our 70th Anniversary Lunch at the Grange Hotel proved to be an unqualified success. There were various artefacts displayed which took us back to our first meeting in 1948 at ‘the Dairy’ . A vote of thanks was given by the Rev Derek Jackson who lavished on us an array of amusing stories which were much appreciated. A beautiful cake was cut to mark the occasion.

Grange Lecture Society

On 23rd January nature and travel photographer John Beatty delivered the Nevile Burwell Memorial lecture entitled ‘Adventures in the Wild’. Aided by his usual stunning photography, John recalled career-forming early visits to Antarctica and the Greenland Ice Cap, and moved on to more recent adventures that included a dramatic helicopter flight close to Mount Everest, accompanying African bushmen to a remarkable all-night healing ceremony and observing from close-up the eruption in 2010 of an Icelandic volcano which disrupted air travel.

On 6th February in ‘A Thousand Years of History: Medieval Cathedrals as Time Machines’, Jon Cannon traced the history of English cathedrals through the medieval period from c.600AD, including the great rebuilding carried out by the Normans following the Conquest, the arrival of the Gothic style and the practice of adding extensions. Above all he sought to present the cathedrals not just as great architecture, but as products of their time, full of history. Jon illustrated his lecture with photographs of the buildings themselves and contemporary manuscripts and paintings. On 6th March, following a short AGM, Jerry Stone closes the season with a lecture entitled ‘The Next 50 Years In Space’. Proceedings begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

We started the New Year with a very busy meeting as 23 members and 6 visitors turned up to hear Jane Bradley talk about her life weaving willow and rushes. It was fascinating to hear how Jane used these natural materials to create a host of items from small baskets to an adult sized coffin! After her talk she showed members how to make a small coaster and handed round rushes so everyone could make their own coaster. Our knitters had also had a busy festive season and on display were jumpers, hats, scarves, bootees and toys. The items will go to the Knitting for Peace charity for distribution to children’s homes, hospitals and other organisations. In March Duncan Hamlett returns to tell us about another charity he is involved with – the Mission Aviation Fellowship. New members are very welcome – contact Margaret on 36735 for more details.

Cartmel and District Flower Club

Cartmel and District Flower Club met for the first demonstration of 2018, given by Norma Halpen and very appropriately titled “Spring is in the air”. Norma delighted the well attended meeting with her charming, colourful arrangements and a lovely time was had by all. The next meeting will be held at 2pm on Monday 19 March 2018 at Cartmel Village Hall, when Ann Morgan will give an ‘In the Pink’ demonstration. Guests are always welcome. Cartmel Art Society

Our programme for 2018 began with a very popular demonstration by Judith Farnsworth of techniques on how to paint loose and impressionist watercolours. We next enjoyed a sociable afternoon together, painting snow scenes. February’s workshop was with Frances Winder, who inspired us with her varied painting techniques using gouache, oil pastels.

Grange Rotary

At the weekly meeting at the end of January, the planned Speaker was unfortunately unable to attend due to illness. However, our own Club computer specialist gave us an ad hoc session on IT skills including an insight into our own Rotary website and how members can input, and access, information which proved to be very helpful.

‘TV Vicars’ was the title of a talk given by Canon Derek Jackson on 7th February which was an amusing slant on the way clergy have been portrayed on the small screen over the years from, ‘All Gas and Gaiters’ to ,’The vicar of Dibley’. The following day we made our annual visit to the restaurant at kendal College. As always, a delightful occasion, delicious food with excellent service. What a wonderful way to support the students and the future of catering in Cumbria.

Grange Probus Club enjoyed an informative and entertaining presentation on “Dogs for Good” from Lyn Mathews, accompanied by her On 14th February, Brian Mitchelhill, sister Brenda and canine assistants Rotary District Community and Christa and Charlie. Lynn explained Vocational Chairman, was our planned how Dogs for Good had been formed Speaker. It was again very sad that from Assistance Dogs UK and a number of similar organisations employing dogs to help people with a range of disabilities and requirements. As well as assisting with FUNERAL DIRECTOR physical tasks, dogs could provide excellent Independent family firm - Complete funeral service mental and emotional benefits to their Private Chapel of Rest - 24hr Availability companions. Lynn described the various tasks that they could learn and concluded with an impressive

the talk had to be cancelled on the day due to the inclement weather and adverse road conditions across the Lakes. Luckily, the members were able to entertain themselves after lunch with the usual spirited conversation.

Dear Editor, In the September 2017 issue of Grange Now the Civic Society canvassed readers about accessibility problems faced by people with limited mobility in Grange-Over-Sands. The largest number of responses described problems created by inconsiderate and/or illegal parking (e.g. on footpaths, across dropped kerbs, etc.). Consequently I would urge all motorists in Grange to show

Dear Editor I’m undertaking a cycling event, organised by Pure Challenge on 5th May. It involves pedalling 81 miles and includes 3000ft of climbing from Walney, Barrowin Furness, to Glasson Dock, Lanchashire. At the same time, I’m hoping to raise funds for a local charity - Bay Search & Rescue. They do an invaluable job supporting other emergencies services with their specialist equipment and knowledge. I have set up a Justgiving page to

more consideration for their fellow occupants of Grange and to remember that in order to save yourself a few seconds you may be creating significant, and potentially hazardous, problems for people in mobility scooters, wheelchairs, pushing a pram, etc. Further information about items of interest in Grange may be found on the Society’s Facebook page at GrangeOverSandsCivicSociety Yours sincerely, Gerard Jones

Property Talk With

Craig Turner

Property Department Manager and Valuer

FRIENDLY HONEST PROPERTY ADVICE Does your property meet the new Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard?

The importance of having an accurate and up to date Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) has never been so crucial, particularly if you are a Landlord. From April 2018, the UK Government are introducing the latest step in their attempt to raise the energy efficiency of the UKs rental stock. MEES (Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard) will impact both private and agency managed domestic property with a substantial fine of £5,000 for those Landlords who fail to take the necessary steps. Rental properties will be required to achieve a rating of Band E or above on their EPC. For many, this will not be an issue with the average UK property currently rated at Band D. Should I be worried?

Dear Editor On February 14th 2013, the outdoor gym equipment was installed on the site of the derelict boating pool on Grange Promanade, between the cafe and shelter. The 3 Parks Group raised the £8,750 for the project with the help of the following:- Cumbria County Council Local Committee; Grange and Cartmel Local Area Partnership; Grange and Cartmel Neighbourhood Forum; Avondale Dental Practice; Cumbria Playing Fields Association, and Councillor Bill Wearing Member Scheme Funding. The Chairman researched the project of Outdoor Gym Equipment and visited other sites

around the county. The firm ‘Fresh Air Fitness’ was selected and the machines chosen were to provide exercise for all parts of the body; arms, legs, hips etc. Each item is clearly labelled, describing its useage and programmes for fitness. Over the past 5 years it has had much use and we are grateful that S.L.D.C. accepted the ownership of it and do regular safety inspections. The date of the installation will not be forgotten as two members of the 3 Parks committee spent 5 hours of Valentine’s Evening on guard, to keep away a group of young people who wanted to use it before the cement set! Ron Shapland

The simple answer is no. Aimed solely at property in Bands F and G, the legislation is being gradually phased in, initially only becoming applicable when you grant a new tenancy, either to a new or existing tenant. From April 2020, this legislation will affect ALL property. What if my property is only Band F or G? Poole Townsends team of experienced Domestic Energy Assessors (DEAs) will review your existing EPC and consider the recommendations set out in the document. Using their knowledge gained from producing thousands of EPCs, our DEAs can guide you to the next step. If your EPC is a few years old and narrowly falls short of Band E, you may simply require one of our DEAs to visit your property and produce an up to date EPC report. A much larger volume of data is gathered now during an assessment, therefore creating a more accurate rating, potentially pushing you above the required Band E. If your rating still falls short, the next stage is to look at the recommendations and maybe carry out some of the necessary improvements to your property. £’s. Who pays? The legislation, as it currently stands, simply indicates ‘Landlords are not expected to upgrade their property if it incurs an upfront cost’. This is currently the subject of government consultation. Depending on the outcome, the landlord may be required to contribute towards the cost of upgrading, subject to a proposed cap of £2,500. This doesn’t mean you can get away with doing nothing because most things in life cost money. You must explore any grants/schemes that are available. Your own energy provider may be able to help and is a good place to start. The larger energy providers are required to set aside funds for energy saving improvements such as loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and boiler scrappage etc. Still not Band E or better. What do I do? If you have explored the stages discussed above and have proof that you have made contact with schemes, installers, energy providers etc. then you have fulfilled your obligation as a Landlord. Some properties simply can’t achieve a rating of E or better. This may be due to location, construction materials or fuels available. Don’t wait. Act now to avoid having your property left empty.

Dear Editor, I completely agree with the points raised in Val Kennedy’s letter (GN 318 Feb). Maybe an answer to the question “why?” is that your correspondent uses logic whereas SLDC lack both this and any practical foresight. Taking one example, a few minutes observation of the traffic chaos in central Grange dictates that a

one-way system is the obvious conclusion and it is difficult to understand why this has not already happened. I am tempted to say “just get on with it” but, with a blinkered, apathetic hierarchy feel that it will probably never happen (until an ambulance cannot get out of the garage for an emergency call). Best wishes, William J. Houston, Grange over Sands.

Grumpy old man I mustn’t moan but as this is a column for a bit of a grumble there is a proposal doing the rounds to turn Thirlmere into a Lake District version of Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Instead of the big one perhaps there will be the Thirlmere Zip Kicker or maybe Pepsi Max Helvellyn slide. Interestingly it was public opposition to the building of the reservoir at Thirlmere back in the 1870s that led to the creation of the various resistance groups that are now involved in trying to prevent development of

Thirlmere reservoir. Anyway the powers that be have eliminated a large part of the boating community from Windermere but are actively considering a zip wire/activity hub proposal. Where will it end? Kents Bank kitesurfing club, Hampsfell hang gliding or perhaps Cartmel speedway? I personally can see modern adventure travel experiences (aka instant gratification without risk) as the slightly disastrous end to our children’s education replacing things like camping, climbing, walking up out of our comfort zone, DofE,

Although the entry to the event is completely free of charge, the money collected from exhibitors fees and refreshment sales will go to the Victoria Hall Support Group, which helps to fund the running costs and special projects at the hall. He reported that, at the time of the meeting, there had been 18 offences committed since early November 2017. Five arrests have been made and all those arrested are from out of the area. He said that Grange is not alone in seeing an increase in crime as rural areas as a whole are being targeted. Extra patrols have been put on in the area. The advice to residents is to always close your windows and lock your doors when you go out and always lock your car and don’t leave valuables on display. District Councillor, Eric Morrell, reported that, following the lido study undertaken by Lambert, Smith, Hampton, the preferred option which had emerged was the “light touch” which means making the lido safe and then opening it to the public. SLDC now hopes to commission design work in line with this. Cllr. Morrell is also looking at options to take this further. The Locality Study in respect of Victoria Hall has been completed and it suggests that management of the Hall could be handed over to a community-led support group. Roger Handley, Chairman of the Victoria Hall Support Group, said the role of the current group is to promote the hall, increase footfall and fundraise and that they were not in a position to take over full management of the hall. A working party of councillors has been set up to take things forward. The next meeting will take place at Victoria Hall on Monday 12th March at 7pm.
