Letter from the Editor Interestingly SLDC recently revealed that their reserves amounted to £14.556 million of which £7.883 million is earmarked. This leaves £6.723 million unallocated. With the Lido consultation ended some time ago we hope that some of the available funds can be put to good use to finally launch works on the Lido - a move that I am sure would be appreciated by many people.
As you read this you have probably just voted in the local elections so we’ll see what comes of that. A date for your diary is the Cartmel Rocks festival (previously Joe and Connie Calling). Many local people and businesses have supported this local charity over the last 4 years and this year the event takes place on Saturday June 9th from 1pm - 11pm. Best of luck to everyone (including my daughter) who is facing the pressure of exams - a tough time for parents, students and teachers.

New date for Ravenstown Fun Day In the March edition of Grange Now, we published an article about Ravenstown turning 100 this year.
A Fun Day was planned at Ravenstown Club for Saturday 9th June but sadly this clashes with the Joe and Connie Calling event so the Fun Day will now take place on Saturday 16th June. Organisers told Grange Now, “If anyone has any old photos to share on the day or would like to help on the day, it would be very much appreciated.
“We have quite a lot of attractions organised including: Bouncy
Castles, Donkey Rides, FacePainting, Morris Dancing, Children’s Sports and some for the adults too!”
Events the Club has already planned include: 16th June - 100 year celebration Fun day; 19th August - Vegetable Show and 29th September - Elton John tribute act.
Michael Barber left school on 22nd March 1968 and started work at his dad’s business. After 50 years he’s still there and still serving the people of Grange.

In the March edition of Grange Now we publicised a fundraising concert that Grange Concert club were holding in Victoria Hall.
A spokesperson for the club told Grange Now: “The Grange-over -Sands and District Concert Club are concerned about the possible closure of the Victoria Hall and recognise its importance to both the club as its concert venue and to the town. The committee had discussed possible ways to support the hall. They were keen to improve the visual aspect for concert goers, as most chamber group musicians perform from the floor of the hall. Purchasing the staging was seen as a way to achieve both aims; better sight lines and an additional source of income for the Victoria Hall. “To a rousing fanfare by the Prince Bishop’s Brass Quintet, the club president Dr. Sheila Phizacklea and the committee presented the staging they had purchased to Mayor Peter Endsor and to the Victoria Hall
manager Sally Haines. Sally was delighted and said that other organisations would be able to make good use of the staging, improving sight lines when the stage is not being used and providing additional stage space for large performing groups. “The cost of £2582.85 was met mainly by the proceeds of the club’s 9th March fundraising concert given by the Ulverston Victoria High School Swing Band.”

‘Don’t put all your eggs in one basket’ is a common saying, but in no other area does this resonate more than in Financial Planning. The key to successful Financial Planning is to ensure that you hold a diverse spread of asset types. Other than Cash and Property; two of the main asset types are Equities and Fixed Interest Securities, such as Corporate Bonds. Equities/Shares; investing in shares means that you own a share of that company and therefore receive a share of the profits by way of dividend. Dividend income is often seen as a hedge against inflation; in theory, if revenue and costs rise with inflation, so will the profits. Consistent and rising dividends should mean a rise in the share price, ensuring investors benefit from both income and capital growth. Conversely, dividends are by no means guaranteed and the value of shares can fall as well as rise so investors may get back less than they invest. Corporate Bonds are essentially loans to companies in return for a fixed rate of interest; the loan being repayable on a fixed date in the future. Before being repaid by the company, Corporate Bonds can be bought and sold on the stock market with the price very much determined by supply and demand, affected by interest rates, inflation and the financial strength of the company. In terms of risk, this type of investment sits below shares as the company simply needs to have enough cash to service the debt, whereas shareholders require the company to make reasonable profits to pay a dividend. Although this type of investment is considered lower risk than shares, they do have an element of risk as some companies will default; in addition to this, currently we are seeing high prices being paid for this type of asset so whilst it will provide a regular income it may produce a capital loss when the maturity date arrives, thus increasing the potential risk of what has traditionally been seen as a ‘steady away’ type investment.
Cartmel Priory pupil’s novel way of celebrating 16th birthday When Emma Walmsley from Grange was deciding what to do to celebrate her sixteenth birthday, several options probably sprang to mind but despite the fact that she has never flown before Emma decided to do a skydive for charity. On Monday 9th April, the Full Town Council Meeting followed the Annual Town Meeting. All were in attendance. The police sent a report and there had been 32 calls for service in March 2018, one up on the previous month. Grange resident, Kate Gaskin, spoke up about the withdrawal of free newspapers from public libraries. Kate has managed to secure agreement for donations (see letters page - well done Kate). Outgoing Councillor, Tom Harvey, has given £600 towards new cycles racks for the town and £400 towards the
renovation of the War Memorial from his SLDC Member’s Grant for the year.
Cllr. Tracy Hathorn informed the meeting that new play equipment should be in situ in Yewtree Gardens by Easter 2019. Following a request from the Victoria Hall Support Group, Councillors resolved to remove the unwieldy furniture from the Council Chambers so that this large room can be used as a viable letting space. Next meeting: Monday 14th May at Victoria Hall, Grange, 7pm.

County Matters
At a recent meeting of the County Council the Director of Public Health for Cumbria presented his Annual report. One of his main recommendations was to have a clear weight management pathway for children and young people. A lifeline for the Lido?
I am glad to tell you that the Grange-over-Sands Lido CIC is now incorporated at Companies House and that it can start work.
The ball is now in SLDC’s court, it needs to allocate money in the next few months to make the Lido safe and to carry out a simple refurbishment. The CIC will take over from there. Coincidentally SLDC will also need to undertake some refurbishment of our Promenade over the next couple of years as well. The CIC will probably insist that the Promenade refurbishment should include

lighting along most or all of the Prom. It is very difficult to see how the new Lido will pay its way on the back of daylight activities alone.
The CIC will have to ensure that the new Lido will bring in sufficient money. A CIC is a not-for-profit organisation. But it is also a Company in the same sense as any other commercial Company. In other words it will have to produce plans which carry wide public support but which are also commercially viable.
This venture will need the ideas, time and effort of all of us who live in Grange. Early feedback shows strong interest in our current efforts. We all know
that we are probably in the Last Chance Saloon with the Lido. Most of us who live in Grange, whether we have lived here all our lives or are “off-comers” have a great affection for our town. We want it to retain its distinctive character but we know that it must move with the times. This project offers probably the biggest single opportunity any of us will have to do that. One final, sobering note. Many of you will look back sadly and even angrily at the failure of the Berners Pool. The CIC will learn from that sad episode and ensure that the plans we make now are sound and sustainable.

In today’s collecting and investment markets, the talk is all about gold and silver bullion coins. Gold coins range from UK half-sovereigns to £100 coins. Some countries (USA, South Africa, Australia, Canada and UK) also mint one ounce pure gold coins.
These coins have very little intrinsic collecting value. Instead, their value arises largely from their bullion price - the face value of a £100 gold coin is £100, its
actual bullion price is currently £950.
Since the 1990s, British coins have also been produced for collectors in silver proof editions. These coins have a higher collecting value than merely their bullion value.

Volunteers turn scrubland into a beautiful oasis

Earlier this month the Friends of Kents Bank Station & Foreshore held a celebration event, sponsored by Northern, to thank community volunteers, sponsors and stakeholders for their support during the last two years. It also marked the completion of the group’s latest project: researching the history of Kents Bank station, producing two station information boards and the installation of a Victorian style storage bench in platform 1 waiting room, funded by The Cumberland Community Fund. The celebratory lunch was tinged with sadness as they wished Jim Trotman, Community Rail Partnership (CRP) Officer, an enjoyable
retirement. He has provided the group with invaluable help and advice since it was formed in September 2015. They then welcomed, former Grange Now employee, Kerstin Esbjörnsson, as their new CRP Officer, and look forward to working with her in future. The new Furness Line timetable comes into effect on 20th May.
There will be four direct trains each way, to and from, Manchester Airport throughout the day, and there is also an additional train to Barrow which arrives at 08.04 which will be more convenient for many workers there.
Over the weekend of Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th May, there will be a wide range of locally-made produce, arts and crafts available to buy at a ‘Made in Allithwaite Open House’ event. There will also be a delicious assortment of homemade cakes and refreshments.

Sport relief fundraiser gets a whole village running
Making a song and dance about Christian Aid
Fresh from not one but two Noda awards (Best pantomime and Best Youth Ensemble), the youngsters from Grange Youth Theatre will once again entertain the residents of Grange and district, this time in aid of those less fortunate. On Friday 18th May, the youngsters will perform some of the songs from their award winning panto, Dick Whittington and his Cat. There will also be the opportunity for the youth of Grange to display

Since its inception a little over a year ago, The Victoria Hall Support Group have come up with many successful fundraising ideas from bingo nights to a cinema - the recent showing of Paddington 2 was a sellout. Their latest venture is the SOS Appeal - Save our Seats. The group told Grange Now, “The 64 seats on the balcony are worn out and have to be reupholstered. £120 per seat has been quoted by local firm, Wilson Robinson, for
a dazzling array of talent through solo performances in song, dance and readings. If last year is anything to go by it will be an evening of extraordinary talent for all to enjoy and, of course, to raise funds for those much less fortunate than ourselves. The concert will take place at the Methodist Church, Kents Bank Road, Grange on Friday 18th May from 7pm until 8.30pm. the work”. The group are hopeful that local businesses, individuals, a family or even a group of friends will get together to sponsor a seat. A plaque stating the name of the sponsor will be mounted on each seat.Those who have already signed up include: Grange Now and local Heating Engineers TB Shepherd & Sons.
An amazing, inspirational and energetic fun run was held in the village of Allithwaite and Allithwaite CE Primary School, St Mary’s Church and Allithwaite Running Club worked together to raise money for two very worthy causes.
The younger children completed laps of the community playing fields, cheered on by parents and encouraged by their older peers. Years Three and Four children completed a jog around the village, using roads, fields and bridleways to complete a course of a mile and a half. Year Five and Six children extended the course by running across the fell covering a distance of over two miles. The children were led (or at times followed) by teachers, parents, running club members and the Vicar. Several other volunteers mapped out the course and marshalled, ensuring we didn’t get lost! After crossing the finishing line to a roaring cheer, the
whole school were treated to well-deserved refreshments at church including an ice lolly!
Mrs Elliott, headteacher, commented: “This community event totally surpassed our expectations, and over £1000 has been raised. Most heart warming was witnessing the ways in which the children encouraged and supported one another throughout”. Rev Rachel Stavert, Vicar, said, “This was a wonderful community event involving the School, Allithwaite Running Club and the Church. There was a real buzz around the village as the children ran.

Gourmet Grange We’re looking forward to the new season Spring Lamb – and hopefully by the time you read this, we will have some available in the shop! This year has not seen a particularly good lambing season in Cumbria; a shortage of grass caused by the bad weather has made it difficult to bring on lambs, which in turn has delayed the arrival of new season spring lamb at market. As Stuart knows all too well, farming is difficult at the best of times but this year’s conditions have proved tricky for farmers. Many will have noticed lamb prices increasing steadily across the board, which is a direct result of the strong market demand (particularly with Easter falling early this year) and tight supplies. Here at Higginsons, we believe in trying to support our local farmers, so despite facing notable price increases on last year’s best hoggetts, we have chosen to absorb a large proportion of this increase to keep our retail prices lower. The start of spring not only signifies the arrival of new season lamb but also speciality Herdwick lamb, of which we have a good source from the Langdales. If you’ve never tried it, now is the time! Is there much of a difference we hear you ask? Our answer would be a definite YES; whilst our local spring lamb is beautiful and mellow flavoured, the Herdwick lamb is succulent with a darker appearance and a more gamey flavour, having matured much slower out on the fells. Our eating recommendation: “A slow-
One-Pot Spicy Chorizo & Bean Stew This month, our recipe is inspired by two local authors, Megan Winter and Simon Fielding who have created a cookbook together. Cumbrians who now live in London, they love to leave the city for travels in their campervan. Being big foodies, they have compiled their favourite recipes from these travels. They joined us in the Low Sizergh Barn farm shop recently and cooked this tasty one-pot stew. INGREDIENTS
4-5in (10-15cm) piece of Higginsons Chorizo, sliced ½ chopped onion
1 clove of garlic, crushed
1-2 potatoes or sweet potatoes, or butternut squash, peeled and cut into small chunks (optional) 400g chopped tomatoes
2 tablespoons tomato puree 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1 tablespoon fajita spice mix 1 teaspoon chilli flakes (optional)
400g Hodmedods beans Fresh crusty bread (to serve)
Spoonful of crème fraiche (to serve)
METHOD
1. In a large hot pan, fry the slices of chorizo until they start to release their oil. Add the onion and the garlic to the pan and stir to make sure they don’t catch. At this stage, if you wish, you can add potato, sweet potato or butternut squash to bulk the dish out a bit. If you’re short on time parboil the veg first. 2. Fry the mixture for 3-5 minutes until the onion (and the potato or squash) is turning brown.
3. Add the chopped tomatoes and tomato puree. Turn the heat down to a simmer. You might need to add some water to loosen the sauce - just half-fill the empty chopped tomato can and that should do it.
4. Add balsamic vinegar and the fajita spice mix to the pan. If you like it spicy, you can also add a tablespoon of chilli flakes. Cover and simmer for 40 minutes to bring out all the spices and flavours or until the potato is soft and breaks apart on a fork. Keep checking and stirring, adding more water if necessary to stop the mixture catching. 5. Add the beans, juices and all, and season to taste. Turn the heat back up and cook until it is hot. Serve in bowls with chunks of bread and some crème fraiche to cool down those spices. Scatter over a few coriander leaves.

Artist of the month Natasha Lomas aka the Pink Flamingo Twenty-five year old Natasha Lomas from Ravenstown is obsessed with pom poms and she’s putting her obsession to good use! Since graduating from Manchester School of Art in the summer of 2013, Natasha has set up her own label, Pink Flamingo Designs and her fun and unique designs are now popular not just here at home but abroad too.
Natasha told Grange Now, “I have always loved making things so this is my dream job. I work from my kitchen table using my much loved sewing machine and overlocker and I make any idea which pops into my head. I aim to make garments which are fun to wear, make a style statement and which can easily fit into any wardrobe. “One customer asked me to make her a matching set from Mickey Mouse material for a visit to Disney World and my outfits have proved to be very popular with Hen parties as you can see from the photo.
“I make everything from scratch so if there’s a particular design or material or colour - just ask.” During the second year of her degree, Natasha studied sportswear and decided this was where her passion lay when it came to her designing outfits. For her degree catwalk show at the end of her course, Natasha decided to mix her
Natasha, who works from home, sells her designs through her own website, on ‘etsy’ and as we were going to press, Natasha told us that she has just been accepted to sell on AmazonHandmade! If all of that doesn’t keep her busy enough she is also found doing the odd shift in Spar on Main Street, Grange. She told us, “The pop-up shop was a great thing to do because it not only gave me a taste of having my own shop but it increased my exposure and I also received four sessions with a business adviser who gave me invaluable advice. It was the business advisor who told me to set up my own website and gave me a lot of help with web design and layout etc. It was her idea to branch out more with my social media accounts to get more followers. Exciting news for the county’s young dancers The North West Centre for Advanced Training is offering young Cumbrian dancers aged 12 to 18 years a chance to sample life as a professional dancer, potentially leading to a place in Cumbria Youth Dance Company or on the Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) scheme.
The Centre for Advanced Training, based at The Lowry in Manchester, is now in its 9th year and is designed to offer young North West performers aged 1218 years a route into the dance industry, preparing them for further professional training. During these Open Days a panel of dance specialists will also select up to 14 young people. The company provides accessible, high quality training and opportunities for gifted and talented young people living in Cumbria.
A spokesperson said “Typically we look for spirited young people who have a clear passion for dance and a raw talent that we can help shape.”

Grange and District Concert Club The next concert in the concert club’s 2018 season sees Principal oboe of the London Symphony Orchestra Olivier Stankiewicz performs with pianist Richard Uttley, a welcome return visitor, in an interesting and varied programme consisting of works by Schumann (3 Romances), Saint-Saens, Dutilleux and Poulenc (all sonatas for piano and oboe) together with Slovakian Folk Songs by Janacek and Martinu. Born in Nice in 1989, Olivier studied at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique in Paris from where he won 1st prize at the 2012 International Oboe Competition in Japan and in 2013 was named as a “classical revelation” by the French Association ADAMI. “Olivier Stankiewicz’s lovely mellow oboe tone could lull even the most insomniac Titania to restful repose.” Bachtrack/LSO Sir John Eliot Gardiner/February 2016. Richard Uttley last came to Grange in 2016 to perform with violinist Savitri Grier and is noted for the integrity and breadth of his musicianship as soloist,
chamber musician and recording artist. He is recognised for his “musical intelligence and pristine facility” (International record review) “amazing decisiveness”, and “tumultuous performance” (Daily Telegraph). His playing is frequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and he has featured on BBC 2, BBC 4, and Sky Arts. St Paul’s Some 50 people enjoyed the first lunchtime concert of our 2018 season on Wednesday 11th April. Our Organist Charles Edmondson performed a mix of organ and piano music ranging from Bach and Mozart to Gershwin and Sousa. Charles
dedicated the concert to the memory of Robert Leach and Frances Limbery, loyal members of our congregation, who had died recently. Robert was particularly fond of Mozart’s music. The catering team rose to the challenge once again, ensuring everyone was replete before the concert started. The next concert of the season is on the

At the Women’s Network meeting on Tuesday, 13th of March, members enjoyed a ‘Musical Story’. Glenda told the story, and Elizabeth was the pianist. This was the last meeting before the AGM. The AGM was held on 27th March, and funds in hand were allotted to various local charities, including Macmillan Nursing care. As the church is expecting to unite with the URC members in Grange, the election of officers and future plans were held in abeyance. One significant arrangement made was to plan an evening with Maurice Steele on May 2nd. His slide shows are unique and his knowledge of Cumbria is widely varied. The background music and commentary is always most appropriate and these shows are not to be missed. Posters advertising this evening will be on display in Grange. Please come and enjoy a wonderful evening. Joint services with the URC church on Maunday Thursday and Good Friday were contemplative. The service on Easter Day had the message if victory, for Christ is risen. A flower cross was carried into the church, and Rev Jo Rand depicted the empty tomb by the use of a cardboard Easter Egg, a service of Communion followed.

Easter is always a special time of reflection and celebration as we remember the life, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. During Holy Week we hosted a Passover Supper in the Jewish tradition, remembering Jesus’ last supper with his followers before his death, and on Good Friday we joined in an open air service in the grounds of Abbot Hall to reflect on
United Reformed April, with its (very cold) showers is now over, so hopefully we can look forward to some warmer, &, dare we say it, drier weather. Our walkers will certainly be hoping for a dry day on 10th of May for their walk round Haverthwaite with David Lamb. Since I last wrote, we have celebrated Easter. All our services this year were held in our Church
Appreciation for our February food bank collection which provided 687 meals and for a cash donation of £75. We are pleased to support the Food Bank with our monthly collections.

The reserve in May
Holme Crag Garden Party
Intriguingly beautiful gardens which took over 30 years to nurture from rock and rugged land are open on Sunday, 20th May in Witherslack. Featured in Tim Longville’s acclaimed Gardens of the Lake District, Holme Crag is opening its gates as a fundraiser for St. Paul’s Parish Church. A magnet for birds, wild animals and insects, this is where a lovely, untamed landscape meets decades of graft, and a passion for planting, to create a unique and beguiling spectacle. By late spring, pond-side astilbes and hostas may be pushing through, rhododendrons still flowering and Holme Crag’s
Candelabra primulas in their first ascent. Many of the plants and trees were established to encourage wildlife and the garden is noted for a rich variety of birds. Please join us for cream teas, raffles, plant, cake, white elephant, selection of stalls and, of course, garden exploration. Running from 2 to 5pm, entrance is £3, children free. MP gets his hands dirty
May is another one of my favourite months as we transit from spring into summer. This is also a great time to visit the top field as the flora starts to reveal itself with colours of pink, white and then as we move on in the season to a sea of yellow as buttercups and yellow rattle come into flower. At its peak it will become a mosaic of colours and scent on a warm day.
It’s also a great place to see butterflies and day flying moths such as, the Six spot burnet moth with its striking black wings and red spots in June. For May we can see the Dingy skipper, a little butterfly that can be seen lazily bobbing about and also in contrast, the fast flying Silver “Y” moth. It is also a good time for seeing the whites and on a good day even the common blue. We are currently looking for someone to help with butterfly transects. This will consist of a weekly walk on a set route around the reserve counting and recording butterflies seen. A great excuse for visiting and encountering other wildlife too. Full training will be

Chiffchaff and Blackcap where a little late due to the poor weather but are arriving in numbers as I write this. Occasional visits from Peregrines, Sparrow hawks and even a possible Goshawk in mid April.
Even though we have had a hard winter compared to some, there will still be ticks around so please check yourselves after a visit. The cattle will be on the reserve now, so please, if you are walking your dog please keep it on the lead and enjoy the reserve.

4. With the church on your left, walk downhill, past public toilets and onto the end of the road. Turn left onto North Lonsdale Road, go 100 yards then turn right across the road into a lane signposted “Wray Castle and Ambleside”. Follow this path to its end then turn left.

This month is the first month of summer. It may be warm and dry or it may be wet or it may be frosty-it’s May.
May is an exciting month, there are two bank holidays, Cinco de Mayo, Europe day, World Laughter day and National Finnish Identity Day (?) Every day is a national holiday somewhere. Basically it’s a month long party the world over including down on the allotment. You can begin planting out in earnest this month;

6. Follow this road to the tee junction, turn left and after 50 yards turn right into National Trust land signposted “Latterbarrow”. When the path forks, keep left to the top of the Fell.
7. Go downhill via the main path South. At the foot, turn left over a stile, go through a gap in a wall and after another 50 yards take the right fork along a waymarked path. Follow this path to meet a more major path. 8. Turn right and walk downhill to where the path ends by Gillbank.

9. Turn left, walk 50 yards, then turn right (signposted Croft Head and Croftlands) then immediately left again into a field. Bear right. Cross over a stone stile, walk downhill, through a gate, across a lane and through another gate, to a path (signposted Hawkshead Hall B5286). Follow this back to Hawkshead. Cross the main road and pass the Red Lion Inn. Go to an archway (advertising the Minstrels Gallery Tea Room) onto Vicarage Lane. 10. After 200 yards turn right through an iron gate into a field (signposted Tarn Hows). through Thompson Ground to meet the Hawkshead to Coniston Road. Turn left uphill back to the car park
start with the tougher cookies at the start of the month: brassicas, leeks and peas, leave the less hardy climbing beans and courgettes until later on but be ready to throw a bit of fleece over these if frost is forecast. As with any party there might be gatecrashers. In damp weather the slugs and snails will be out in numbers; do everything you can to protect your young seedlings when they are at their most vulnerable. Organic slug pellets, sheep’s wool, grit, sand, copper tape, coffee grounds and slug pubs all help. Apparently porridge oats also work well by swelling up inside them to the point where they die or rendered, well, sluggish enough to be easily picked off in the early hours by those birds who appreciate their gastropods stuffed! Make sure your seedlings
don’t go thirsty in any dry periods and continue to sow salads and radishes. Weeds will be popping up so keep a close eye on them and hoe them down.
Your broad beans should be progressing nicely and you might observe an interesting bit of insect behaviour taking place on them. Aphids tend to attack the growing tips and are weirdly ‘shepherded’ and ‘milked’ by ants (they stroke the aphids backs to get them to release a sweet fluid), who can carry the aphids on to previously unaffected plants. This behaviour can be reduced by pinching out the tips and applying a bit of soapy water to any herds you notice.
Don’t forget to enjoy yourself as well - get out when it’s sunny and enjoy the apple and pear blossoms. The summer is a marathon and not a sprint.

Is it a fifth year running for osprey chicks? A pair of breeding ospreys has returned to Foulshaw Moss near Witherslack, giving rise to the hope that chicks will be soon be hatching. This would be the fifth consecutive year that this pair of breeding ospreys has raised chicks at this site – a total of 11 chicks have been successfully raised so far.

High praise for Grange CE School All aspects of school life were inspected by the H.M.I. lead inspector who visited the school in the spring term. She confirmed the school’s view that Grange CE continues to be a good school where children enjoy learning and are kept very safe. The inspector praised many areas including our excellent and forward thinking staff and our outstanding governing body that helped us to achieve this good report. The strong links with the local community and overseas were also highlighted.

Lindale Primary and Pre-School Nursery We started off the new term with an Arts week.
A highlight was working with felt maker Julie Harrison to design and create 2 wall hangings which depicted our beautiful surroundings. They also worked on developing their drawing and painting skills and working in mixed age groups where the older children taught skills to the younger ones. Thank you to Cartmel Old Grammar School fund which supported this event.
They joined hundreds of other girls at Sparkle and Ice, a weekend event held at Girlguiding’s activity centre Waddow Hall near Clitheroe. Former Grange Now deliverer, Ellie Douglas was one of the young women taking part. After pitching their tents, the group had great fun with activities which ranged from roller skating to crate stacking. And at night they had the choice of ditching their welly boots for dancing shoes to enjoy the onsite disco or having a hot chocolate whilst stargazing before layering up to endure plunging temperatures to take on the challenge of winter camping. The event was supported by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.

We won through to the South Lakes hockey competition and start the cluster events off this week with Tri-golf.
Year 5 & 6 and 3 & 4 started their new topic of ‘Extreme earth’ with a visit from a geologist who showed the children his rock and fossil collection and exploding volcano models. Years 1 and 2 have enjoyed a visit to Sizergh Barn and the ‘Growing well’ project as part of their Science work on plants and living things.
Friends of Lindale, our school PTA have arranged several events for this term to raise funds for school. These include a bingo night, a table top sale and summer barbeque. Lindale Pre-school Nursery have also had a busy start to the term with a fantastic visit to Old Hall Farm Bouth. This led to lots of excitement playing farms, animal number rhymes and looking at animal stories.

Just before the Easter Holiday, we had two exciting events at school! Firstly, the children in Class 4 were visited by a team of engineers from BAE Systems for a robotics workshop. They were shown how to build Lego robots for a number of tasks. These included curling, bowling and the Top Gear challenge which entailed getting the robot to go around a circuit. To place the day’s activities into context, the team from BAE gave the class a presentation about the real world engineering challenges they have been involved with. Secondly, our KS1 team represented us at Key Steps Gymnastics Competition in Penrith. We finished 6th out

We neared the end of our term on a sunny afternoon working in our mixed aged house teams. We travelled around the inside of school, our reflection garden and St Mary’s Church to engage with a wide range of reflection activities. From lying in an outdoor-makeshift shelter and considering the life of a homeless person to writing down a question for
God. Having a quiet moment watching the patterns in the bubble lamp or tying a ribbon to the hope tree, thinking of protecting nature and the natural environment. And many more thought provoking activities in between. A fulfilling and calming end to our celebration of Hope. The grand finale of the Spring Term was the superb Easter Service with children speaking, dancing, playing a vast variety of musical instruments, singing and show casing art work. And of course – no Spring term would be complete without the egg rolling and decorating competitions.

The busy end to the Spring Term saw us celebrate Easter in Cartmel’s magnificent Priory, focusing on our Term’s theme of ‘Justice’. Children produced some colourful and intricate Easter Hats for a school parade, with winners judged by Dr Williams from Cartmel Priory School. We were also lucky enough to get a visit from BAE to give older children a workshop about robotics and the chance to experiment with some ingenious machines.

Cartmel Priory School
In February, twenty students chosen from Years 9 & 10 sat the national UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. Students had 60 minutes to answer 25 varied multiple-choice mathematical problems. In excess of 250,000 students from more than 3,000 schools and colleges across the UK took part this year. High scorers are awarded certificates from the University of Leeds; this year nine CPS students gained bronze, silver or gold certificates. Top scorers are then invited to participate in the follow-on competition called the ‘Kangaroo’; Charlie R and Martha R (pictured)went on to sit the Kangaroo Paper in March 2018. Do you know what Pungs, Chows and Kongs are? Grange U3A is firmly committed to the idea of keeping both mind and body active. One of the ways we do this is by having games interest groups which make you exercise your mind. We have bridge, whist, Countdown, Scrabble and mah jong groups. As its name suggests, mahjong is a game which originated in China. It may be 1,000 years old but it has only been played in the West for about 100 years. The emphasis is on enjoyment, learning new skills and exercising the mind in the company of a friendly group. Unlike in the traditional Chinese game there is no gambling! The group meets twice a month on Tuesday evenings in Grange Institute.
If you have not met it before mahjong can be rather daunting but it does have some similarities with rummy as it involves collecting sets and “going out”. It is played using tiles with Chinese symbols. The object of the game is to be the first to go ‘mahjong’ by using all your tiles to score. Getting used to the designs on the tiles is the first hurdle to overcome. Once you have the hang of this most players will be looking to make “Pungs”, “Chows” and “Kongs”, i.e, three of the same tile, runs of three tiles and four of the same tile. As with all games

chance plays a part, but mahjong offers lots of opportunity to learn and exercise skill. In order to score well a player needs to improve their knowledge of the special hands in order to make much higher scores than can be achieved with pungs, chows and kongs. These special hands have a wonderful collection of names some of them evocative of China. Just a few examples are ‘windy chows’, ‘moon at the bottom of the well’ and ‘imperial jade’. Our picture shows a ‘wriggly dragon’, but the presence of three two bamboo tiles shows that this was achieved after a “goulash”, the wall being exhausted of tiles before a ‘mahjong’ is reached. If that happens you start again with a new wall but the two bamboos can be used as jokers. When Granny Ruell, mother of Dr Ruell (Peninsula Medical Practice) passed away on 18th April, her two grandsons, David and Oliver Gent decided they wanted to do something in her memory. Dorothy had suffered from memory problems over the past ten years and David and Oliver have decided to take part in the Great North Swim on the 9th of June to remember her and to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society. Dorothy married Tom when she was 21. Both from large farming families based on the Welsh borders, they went on to have four children, nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. SOCIETY ROUND-UP Cartmel Cricket Club
The sun is shining and so the cricket season is upon us. Our first league game was on the 22nd April. Most games are on Saturdays with the odd mid week fixture. There have been plenty of rule changes this year including limiting games to 40 overs per side. We play in Division 3 of the Westmorland County League and are desperately seeking new players. Owing to very last minute unforeseen circumstances the scheduled speaker was unable to get to the April meeting. Grange NSPCC
A fashion show by Paragon of Grange was enjoyed by a full house in the URC hall just before Easter. A wide range of items including Jackets, Dresses, Tops and Trousers were modelled with great finesse by Committee members and friends. Tea and biscuits were served and we are pleased to say £470 was raised for the NSPCC. Our thanks go to Jill from Paragon for all her hard work in putting on the show for us. Watch out for our Committee Members on 5th May who will be on the streets of Grange in the morning collecting for our flag day. Our next event is our annual Coffee Morning which will be in the United Reformed Church Hall on Saturday 26th May. 10-12 noon. There will various stalls including a cake stall and a raffle. Admission is £1.00 to include coffee and biscuits. Hope to see you all there.
Grange over Sands Civic Society
The Society held its Annual General Meeting at the Grange hotel on Wednesday 28 March. Following this Susannah Bleakley, Chief Executive of the Morecambe Bay Partnership gave an excellent talk on a number of the
projects and activities undertaken by the Partnership on the Cartmel and Furness peninsulas as well as in other areas around the Bay. Several members of the Ulverston Civic Society accepted an invitation to attend the talk as the first step in strengthening ties with neighbouring Civic Societies with a view to making common cause where mutually beneficial. The Society’s Promenade Gardening Group worked with Rotary to plant purple crocuses in the shape of a heart near the ornamental wishing well to publicise the Purple4Polio strand of Rotary’s ENDPOLIIONOW campaign. The planting proved to be a great success. As always the Promenade Gardeners and the Grange In Bloom Group (working alongside other groups in Grange) are working hard to ensure Grange continues to appear at its best. The club at Lindale Held it’s opening social with a cheese and wine evening along with an interesting talk entitled “ An Accidental Archaeologist” which was very well received by a well attended audience. Our annual friendly with Heversham took place in glorious sunshine and was fully supported by both clubs.The refreshments were mouthwatering and disappeared quickly. Congratulations to Ian Sissons who scored the most points from Lindale. The Johnson’s Trophy was held on Saturday April 14th and was well organised by Alan Anderson.The competition took a different format this year with all pairs playing two games in sections.The Plate competition was won by Laurie Scullard and Mercedes Mendez who beat Dave Archer and Teri Butler which was a straight final.The main competition was won by Barbara Pettit and Mike Atkinson who beat Rose Bridson and Sid Smith in the final. It was a wonderfully relaxed competition with all players supporting each other. Our next event will be the annual friendly Against Bolton le Sands on May 5th. Coffee Club
At our March meeting, Juliet Burd, UK Director of ‘Children of Hope’, who had just returned from Uganda came and brought us an update of the progress that has been made in the building of new classrooms and the effect this has had in the lives of the local children. The work of Children of Hope started in 2007 and was the vision of Pastor John Bunjo who set up the first Primary school in Bombo. Since then a team from our local churches has been visiting annually to help in education, vocational training and medical work in three villages. Juliet gave us a fascinating illustrated talk showing how not only the school facilities but also the local children are benefitting from the work that is being carried out. The work in the schools, the clinics and the training centres continues to expand in its influence all the time. On May 15th we welcome the retired Bishop of Manchester, Rt Rev’d Nigel McCulloch, to speak to us. He has entitled his talk ‘Leaps and Games.’The meeting is at 10.30 am at Abbot Hall, Kents Bank preceded by coffee at 10am.

Held their meeting on 11th April. A talk on Contemporary Rag Hooking was very much enjoyed by all present and a further practical day is hoped for in the near future. Our AGM was well supported and we recorded a healthy membership as we look forward to our new season of talks which will commence on October 2nd. The meeting was followed by a most interesting talk by Chris Harris, JP, on the subject of Life on the Bench. The outing to the Palace Theatre, Manchester, to see Miss Saigon was most enjoyable. The show was vibrant with wonderful dance interludes and memorable tunes which we hummed on our return journey. Our trip for afternoon tea at Number 17, Milnthorpe is booked for Thursday 10th May at 15.00 hours. Join this informal occasion for a little socialising. North Lonsdale Tennis Club
Our full season commenced in April and the winners of the first Club social doubles tournament were Phil Martin and Christine Dawson. Social turn up and play tennis takes place on Tuesday/ Friday evenings and Sunday mornings. On the first 4 Saturday mornings in May we are running Back to Tennis sessions with our club coach for anyone to turn and see if those rusty old tennis skills are worth reviving. Saturday 12th of May is the national Great British Tennis Weekend and also our club open day for anyone considering membership. The league season also commences at the end of April with NLTC fielding a full complement of Ladies, Mixed and 2 Mens teams in the Westmorland league. With several new members an exciting and enjoyable season is in prospect on what are generally reckoned to be the best courts in the South Lakes area.

Our President, Caroline Blee welcomed everyone to the April meeting which was very well attended. She was also pleased to invite back to Witherslack, Andy Lowe as our guest speaker for the evening. The Sales Recycling table has taken on a “Spring / Summer” theme which we hope will be a great success. Everyone was reminded about the Garden Party being held at Holme Crag on the 20th May and that helpers are required. The Summer Outing to Lowther Castle will take place in August date yet to be confirmed. Following the business part of the meeting, Andy Lowe was introduced and he went on to demonstrate visually with slides and talk about Woodland Craft and Industries with great expertise, knowledge and enthusiasm. It was an extremely entertaining and informative talk which covered areas of how charcoal and bobbin making was such a part of the Lake District’s whole economy. Our next meeting is on the 8th May when the Resolutions for the AGM will take place.

The speaker at the last meeting was Margaret Watkins, whose talk entitled ‘Yesterday’s Fashions’ was based on her interesting life with her aunt. This included an impromptu fashion show with members having much amusement wearing various fashions of yesteryear. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 2nd May at 1.00 pm at Lower Holker Village Hall and is a resolutions meeting for members followed by a Jacob’s Join.

Members of the North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild enjoyed doing some monoprinting on paper and fabric with Sandra Kendall at their monthly meeting held on Tuesday 10th of April. At our recent meeting we welcomed back Duncan Hamlett who talked to us about the Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) which flies medical staff and supplies to many parts of the world and works with 1500 partner organisations. The charity was formed in 1945 and Duncan gave several examples of how lives had been saved and changed for the better. In anticipation of Duncan’s visit members had been collecting postcards and a box of them was handed over. Duncan explained how collectors around the world look on e-bay and other internet sites for a variety of postcards and their sale gives the charity much needed funds. Margaret Brennand had recently attended a cookery school at Denman College and told members about her experience and her new-found skill in chopping onions. Several members had baked biscuits for the meeting and funds raised from their sale would go towards a project in Pakistan to help women there. Ian Gee, a Director and Trustee of the Lakes Flying Company, gave an absorbing and fascinating Talk to a large audience about “Aviation on Windermere 1909-1919”, describing how Edward Wakefield pioneered flight from water on Windermere. Wakefield built hangars at Bowness and used boat engineers from Barrow to adapt an Avro plane as a seaplane. Despite widespread ridicule “Waterbird” made the first successful flight from water 25th November 1911 from the Lake. The pilot sat at the front with the engine and propellers at the rear. The float was stepped, (a crucial adaptation) and the outriggers made from bamboo. Wakefield recognised early on the military advantages of seaplanes for scouting purposes as land- based aircraft at the time did not have the range to reach enemy lines. During World War I Windermere was an important centre for training Naval Pilots and the first seaplanes were used 25th December 1914 against Zeppelin bases in Germany. A replica of the “Waterbird” is currently being built and approaching “air worthiness”. Grange Garden Society
At the March meeting members heard from Dr. Trevor Pierce, how, in the Victorian era, Natural History, from being merely a pastime, developed to become a recognized science. We learnt from his interesting and amusing talk that “Naturalists” were enthusiastic collectors of natural objects ; live animals (including birds eggs and butterflies,) and plants. Dr. Pierce brought along several books from his collection as examples of the many that were published to cater for this growing interest. Also various art forms such as shelldecoration and taxidermy became popular as a means of displaying objects as they were accumulated. Inevitably increased collection from nature resulted in the extinction of several species. However as Darwin’s Theory of Evolution and the advanced study of botany and zoology brought about a greater understanding of the natural world,”Naturalists” became more enlightened and the foundations of the sciences of ecology and conservation familiar to us today were laid. The next meeting of the Society will be on Friday 18th May at 7.30pm in the URC Hall, Kent’s Bank Road. Our speaker, Peter Foley , will give an illustrated talk entitled “The Transformation of Our Garden.”
Cartmel and District Flower Club
Cartmel and District Flower Club held their monthly meeting at Cartmel village hall where they welcomed the guest arranger Louise Jones of Wallasey, who enchanted the club members and guests with her thought provoking and charming arrangements on the theme of “Inspired By …..”. The Club will hold a Coffee Morning in the Parish Church of St Paul’s, Pig Lane, Grange from 10am – 12 noon on Saturday, May 5th in Aid of St Mary’s Hospice with entrance £1 including refreshments. The next monthly meeting will be on Monday, May 21st when the demonstrator will be Catherine Baines from Preston and the theme will be “Garden Magic”. Grange Probus Club
Grange Probus Club held its AGM at the Netherwood Hotel and members heard how the club was continuing to flourish, particularly due to its decision 2 years ago to admit lady members. Canon Derek Jackson was appointed as Chairman. The club’s April meeting welcomed John Walker, who talked about “North West Blood Bikes Lancs & Lakes”. He explained how the voluntary scheme had originated in 1962 to transport blood supplies between blood banks and hospitals. The local service had been established in 2012 and carried out vital voluntary work in support of the NHS, with up to 1,200 call-outs per month. Some bikes had been provided by bodies such as the Freemasons but riders also used their own machines. The club’s next event will be at the Netherwood Hotel on Monday, May 14th at 11am, when Richard Trevitt will talk about “The Past, Present and Future of the Lancaster Canal”. Grange Probus welcomes retired men and women as new members and meets on the second Monday of each month at the Netherwood Hotel for interesting talks on a wide range of topics. Don’t hang up your smock or put your brushes to the back of the cupboard as we have a Summer Programme of outdoor painting planned. Dates are 17 May @ the Station or Promenade, 14 June @ Ornamental Gardens & Duck Pond, 05 July @ Edwardian Bandstand & Park & 02 August @ Community Orchard. If you are you like me, new to open air painting all you need to do is turn up prepared for the medium of your choice. Paint or sketch the choice is yours but don’t forget to bring water and something to put it in if you are painting. A folding chair is very useful and either an easel or a board for your paper. Other than that you may want a flask and light refreshments, plus enthusiasm and your fingers crossed for good weather. The Summer Exhibition runs for a week at the Victoria Hall from Saturday 21 July.
Grange over Sands Golf Club
In glorious sunshine our golf season started with Captain Sean Munsie driving 184 yards down the middle of the fairway. This was followed by a team matchplay event , a full clubhouse celebrated Vice Captain Dave Bushell’s team’s victory . A week later Lady Captain Dot McCauley thrilled her supporters with a classic drive of 144yards into the middle of the fairway. In the following team matchplay event her team celebrated victory over Vice Captain Pauline Smith’s team. The Easter Bunny Raffle winner was Hillary Spencer. The 9 hole Easter Cup for Juniors was won by Sam Mallinson with Ava Walsh as runner up. Junior coaching & playing sessions will continue fortnightly on Sunday afternoons. Junior members please check with the pro shop for date and time of the next session. Competition results: The Ernie Armitt Shield winner was Barrow Gaskarth (40 pts), The Easter Shield was fiercely contested in tough conditions. 4 players finished with a Net 68, the winner on the cpo was Kevin Walsh from Dave Bushell, Dave Wearing & Mark Gillett. The Monthly Stableford wi nner was Marshall Pickup(40pts). The Sunday Open Texas Scramble event attracted a field of 25 teams. Winners Silverdale (58.25) beating Mark Gillett, Mike Drinkall, Dave Wearing, Dave Bushell by 0.25!
Allithwaite Running Club
With the much awaited lighter evenings, we’re enjoying getting out onto our wonderful trails. It’s been a long, cold winter, but head torches helped more people keep running over the darker months and we’re now fitter and ready for a good season ahead. A number of the club braved the ‘Beast from the East’ whilst running (and marshalling) the Cartmel Trail Race in March, with some good results. Gill and Sally successfully ran the Coniston 14 race as they build up the miles and more challenges. More recently, Fran and Laura enjoyed the Lakeland Trails at Hawkshead, and John kicked off the fell running season at Loughrigg. We particularly enjoyed helping Allithwaite Primary School’s fun run (see full article in paper). Our plans for a junior section are progressing, so we’d love to see some of the young people join us in the future – watch this space. In the next few weeks we’ll be running more off road and are we’ll be doing some more runs further afield, taking advantage of the longer evenings and enjoying the Spring. On 28 March the Club enjoyed an enlightening talk by Duncan Hamlett on a subject dear to his heart: Mary’s Meals, a wonderful charity that aims to provide one meal every school day for chronically hungry children. The Club were able to donate £500 to this worthy cause. On Easter Saturday in bitterly cold weather conditions a team of hardy Rotarians braved the elements to collect well over £500 on the streets of Grange for Age( UK), Mind and Growing Well. Thanks go out to all who contributed, whether locals or visitors of a generous nature. The charismatic speaker John Ball from the Brockholes Nature Reserve, Preston, visited on 25 April, his talk being titled “The Unreserved Reserve”- the story of the creation and success of this iconic Nature Reserve and its floating Visitor Village. To celebrate our 71st anniversary the Annual Charter Dinner took place on 2 May at the Netherwood with fine food and wine for all to savour. Always a look forward to event in the Rotary calendar, this year’s occasion was no exception, expertly presided over by Stuart Harling.

We have now recommenced our weekly raffles at the Cumbria Grand Hotel which are well supported and help to raise funds for Jigsaw, the Children’s Hospice, and other local charities. We have also started the arrangements for our Summer Raffle and are grateful to the local businesses and individuals who have offered a raffle prize. We further agreed at our meeting this week to continue to pay some of the tuition fees of children at the Orphans Home of Grace in Kenya. This year is the centenary of Lions Clubs International and as part of our celebrations we have planted a white cherry tree in Park Road Gardens. We are a small and very focused team who enjoy each other’s company and would welcome with open arms anyone who would like to join in with our activities. We meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month and have regular social meetings in between. We also have a Friends group who support us and follow our activities. Victoria Hall Support Group
Friday 13th April wasn’t an unlucky one as far as VHSG is concerned. The Sands Band put on another great ceilidh, which was enjoyed by all and the proceeds went to the hall. VHSG would like to thank all the musicians and the caller.
A similar event with a Country & Western theme is coming up on Saturday 5th May at 7pm. There will be live country music from local band ‘Face for Radio’, line dance masterclasses and country dinner included. Tickets must be pre-booked at Grange Information Centre 015395 34026. The screening of ‘Paddington 2’ was a huge success and bodes well for the future of ‘Cinema at the Vic’ - the next one being ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ Sunday 29th April at 7pm. 3rd April- Sandra and David Corms were our speakers. Sandra had initially attended a day course on glass making which she had really enjoyed and so continued to attend. David explained the theory and then showed us a video of Sandra creating her own objects under the watchful eye of a professional glassmaker. She now exhibits her products at promArt and wedding fairs and also with a local retailer. She brought along some beautiful paper weights and prisms to show us. An enjoyable evening. 17th April - Members were invited to visit Pomegranate and Sage in Kendal, a new deli and eatery recently opened by Tony Shaw. Tony decorated a delicious red velvet cake and a nutty meringue with chocolate ganache. This was followed by the preparation of four delicious salads using spices, pastes and unusual wheat products and leaves. Finally he produced a pulled pork which had been marinated and cooked earlier. Then followed the best part - we ate it all and thoroughly enjoyed it! Thank you Tony for a delightful evening.
Grange Fell Golf Club
Course looking good after the awful winter weather thanks to Mike and his team. Competition season started late March with Men’s Captain’s (Kevin Pearson) Drive-in when the President’s (Alan Johnston) team narrowly defeated the Captains team by 3pts. Winners on the day were Graham Shepherd and Steve Wilson on 43pts; the Easter Medal was won by Gary Holden with an excellent score of 60 net; runner up was Daryl Lomas on 65net. Coronation Trophy - Ken Bramley won with 39 pts. Sunday 15th April - Silver Anniversary Trophy winner was Brian Shepherd with a 68 net. Macs Medal Foursomes winners were Robert Moore and Gary Holden with a 66net. The Ladies opened their year with Lady Captain’s (Ellie Woodburn) Drive-in, won by Ronnie Hall with Carol Campbell runner up. A 9 Hole qualifying Competition was the Ladies next Competition again won by Ronnie with Jill Atkinson runner up. On the Social side the club has held two events recently the Captain’s Charity night when £800 was raised for Prostate Cancer and an Adele Tribute night which were both well supported by members and guests. Welcome to our Spring Newsletter - we’ve had a busy few months filled with a wide range of new activities. January
A new year means new ideas and new activities. Lana Grindley helped residents make some amazing salt dough biscuits. We shall be inviting her back to do other arts and crafts with us.
We were pleased to welcome Lizzy Walker to The Old Vicarage - she entertained us with a jazz concert which left us feeling relaxed and mellow. It was a great way to start the year. We had a series of baking days where our residents made chocolate rice cakes and some delicious puddings.

We started the month with a visit from Philip Marshall who helped our residents make some acrylic painted landscapes.
Penny Hillier-Evans came and helped our residents make some textile landscapes using wool – they looked stunning. Joanna Cameron from the Creation Station helped our residents make some amazing canvases using buttons.
We have put all our residents’ craft work on display.
March We had a busy month preparing for Easter, making Easter decorations for The Old Vicarage. Richard Bromley, the singer and pianist, returned to The Old Vicarage and entertained us in an Easter concert. Melanie Brierley, who leads dance classes for the elderly, ran a very musical session for our residents – we look forward to seeing her again in May.
It may have been a bleak month outside but we kept ourselves busy with a range of activities including knitting, quizzes and lots of games. We also filled The Old Vicarage with flowers after our flower arranging class.

A visit from the Owls
We invited the Owl Sanctuary for a visit as we hadn’t seen them for a while. As always, our residents loved seeing and stroking the owls. We celebrated Burns Night with haggis – we weren’t all sure if we would like it but we found it very tasty. 26
Sarah McArthur led our residents in a high tempo dance session – they thoroughly enjoyed it and we are inviting her to come back every few weeks.

We had lots of special meals for St. Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day and Easter Sunday. We filled The Old Vicarage with flowers arrangements which had been prepared by the residents for Mother’s Day We invited several classes from Allithwaite Primary to an Easter Egg hunt in The Old Vicarage gardens. The residents loved seeing them run around and the pupils gave us a little concert – they always sing beautifully. We have started monthly Sunday Movie afternoons and of course, we also indulged in popcorn and chocolates!
Dear Editor, In reply to Norman Green’s letter regarding the opening of the new Tesco store, yes, the Mayor, Councillor Peter Endsor, was honoured to be invited, just as he is also honoured to perform all his civic duties with impartiality. In one week at Easter, he presented prizes to Cartmel Cubs, opened the new Emma’s Café on the Prom, judged the children’s Easter art at Higginson’s Butchers, attended Michael’s 50 years anniversary
at Proctor’s Butchers, attended the Bay Search and Rescue Easter event and the Operatic Society at the Victoria Hall, all of which are local businesses/ societies. All this, in one week, in his own time, with no thought of “free publicity”, which is not what his civic duty is about. Amongst the several election publications distributed in the Grange Ward before the May elections are two from the Liberal Democrats which proudly boast that Councillor Eric Morrell serves on the Committee of the Grange Institute. This is incorrect as Dear Editor,
Grange residents will by now be aware that Cumbria Library Services have ceased to fund newspapers and magazines in libraries. This has meant a visible fall in the number of residents sitting reading, taking refreshments and generally socialising in Grange Library throughout the day. My anger at finding that donations of newspapers was not permissible beggared belief.
Grange Town Council, when approached, was willing to help with funding, as was the Chamber of Trade. Knowing the Town they would be two of many on a list.
