Happy New Year to you all, I hope you had a relaxing and fun filled time over the festive period. December and January is a time when we focus on planning and implementing New Year’s Resolutions; February through to November can see those well thought out plans delayed until the next year. Whether it’s a promise you make to yourself at the start of the year or perhaps during a mid-year break, one crucial element of anyone’s life is to make sure their finances are in order. Many people feel they are happy to take care of their own financial situation, and are indeed more than capable of doing so. Equally, there are those that feel they now require help and guidance, or perhaps the person that used to provide such guidance is no longer able to do so. Financial Planners provide varying degrees of support, at a level to suit you. Financial Advice can come at key stages in life; perhaps you are comfortable to make your own decisions most of the time but at specific times, such as retirement, you need that extra level of specialist advice. Portfolio Management, on the other hand, is the ‘complete package’. A portfolio could be made up of
one or a number of different types of investments; ISAs, Pensions, Investment Bonds, single Company Shares etc. If you no longer feel comfortable looking after your portfolio, or you have simply never given it the focus it needs it could be time to delegate the responsibility to a Financial Planner. Letter from the Editor One of the joys of working at Grange Now is the element of surprise. One minute you can be answering a phone call or typing up a report and then someone will come in and tell you how shocked she had been with all the homeless people she had seen in Manchester, and that she was going to do something about it. Grange Now readers responded superbly to Anne’s appeal for warm clothing and indeed many went further. We had presents all beautifully wrapped and many generous donations. Next month we will be showing you some pictures of Anne Davison distributing all your donations. Well done to everyone involved. As you will see on the front cover, the local young farmers have done an amazing job delivering gifts to Furness hospital and raising lots of money on the way. With the start of the new year Lawrie Woodley gives us all an interesting piece on the ageing process while our mini feature will give you some ideas on getting out and about and perhaps trying something new as we begin 2017. Happy New Year from Northern Rail Grange Now has recently reported on the cost of travelling to sixth form for 16-18 year olds.
As we stated previously, education is compulsory until the age of 18 but help with travel costs is not. Championing the case for parents was Tim Owen, Chairman of the Furness Line Community Rail Partnership, who has worked tirelessly on this and has held many meetings with Northern to discuss the issue. I am delighted to report that on Tuesday 13th December, Tim attended a meeting with Lakes Line Community Rail Partnership, at which Northern announced that they will be selling discounted season tickets for 16 to 18 year olds on a trial basis on the Lakes and Furness Lines with effect from January 2017.

“As such we wanted to introduce a scheme which not only recognised this, but also offered a significant discount - giving families something back for the continued use of our services. “From January 2017 all schoolchildren under 16 who use the rail services to travel to a number of specified schools will be able to apply for a 40 per cent discount on their termtime season tickets. “And, for the duration of the trial, children aged 16-18 travelling to the same schools will be able to apply for a 25 per cent discount on their termtime season tickets.” Each school whose pupils are eligible for the discount have been notified by Northern and have received application forms to distribute to pupils ahead of the spring term which begins in January. On the Furness Line the participating
schools will be: Dowdales, Dalton, Ulverston Victoria High School, Lancaster Girls Grammar School, Central Lancaster High School, Lancaster Royal Grammar School and Ripley St. Thomas C of E Academy, Lancaster.” The discount of 25%, represents a sizeable saving for many parents. Grange Town Council are administering the grant on behalf of the District Council and SLDC expect at least 10 businesses to benefit from the total £2,500 available. Sixteen businesses
have taken advantage of previous schemes and for this round, those who have not been awarded grants previously will be given priority.
Decisions on awards will be made by the Town Council at its March 2017 meeting, so applications need to be completed and returned to the Information Centre at the Victoria Hall by the 28 February 2017.

Grange Now had written an article about fourteen year old Matthew Wardle from Cark who was in desperate need of a new wheelchair, having grown out of his previous one. Matthew has severe Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy and needs a special wheelchair to give him the support he needs to keep him comfortable at the same time as being tough enough to handle the varied terrain around here.
However, thanks to the charity NewLife in Cumbria, and also to very generous donations from Grange Lions and the Charles Godwin Trust in Cartmel, enough money for Matthew’s new chair has already been donated. Connie and Joe’s charity, ‘Butterfly Hugs’ is going to fund spoke guards for the chair which are being specially designed for Matthew.
Mum Val told Grange Now: “We are so grateful to everyone.This will make a real difference to Matthew and to us all as a family. In the end, more money than was needed was raised but we have been told we can use this to buy other things for Matthew which is just fantastic. Thank you everyone”. Matthew will get his new wheelchair in January.

Would you like to play an active role in Victoria Hall’s future? As has been reported in several issues of Grange Now, the Victoria Hall will lose its District Council funding from 2019 which amounts to £28,000 per annum. This shortfall will have to come from somewhere and it has been decided that a ‘Friends Group’ will be set up which will help develop ideas to raise an income for the hall. A meeting which was held on 5th April led to many ideas coming forward: live music, regular cinema screenings, touring theatre productions, comedy nights, fundraising events, family workshops etc. All that is needed now is a committee of very committed individuals, to help organise these events. We are very fortunate in this area in that we have a vast number of volunteers who readily ‘answer the call’, quite often as soon as asked. If this something you could help out with then why not go along to an informal meeting at the Hall on Thursday 16th February at 7pm. Anne has been overwhelmed by the generosity of local people and she told Grange Now: “I must admit I have shed a few tears over how the public have reacted to this. People have turned up in droves with wooLlies and treats for the homeless. People are just so wonderful and kind. It’s made me feel really emotional”. Prior to the article appearing, Grange Now contacted local churches and asked them to

New Affordable Houses in Grange New affordable houses for sale under the SLDC “low-cost home ownership scheme” are to become available at Shoreside, the Wainhomes development on Kents Bank Road, Grange. There will be two and three bedroom homes and a two-bedroom apartment and the starting price is £80,000. To be able to buy one of the houses through the low-cost home ownership scheme someone would need to have lived in the area for at least three years and not able to afford to buy or rent on the open market. First Responders win another gold award Grange Community First Responders reached a significant milestone earlier this year having given ten years service in this locality. The team consists of ten experienced responders and one new recruit. Within the team there are two Heartstart instructors and six field trainers. In the year up to 1 November 2016, the team has attended over 280 calls and trained 479 people how to use a defibrillator and basic techniques that can help to save lives. In November, North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) held an awards ceremony to celebrate long service by staff and volunteers. Grange Team leader, Chris Cousins attended this event and was presented with a certificate that states the team has given ten years or more of consistently high standard service to the community. to distribute CardiacSmart awards.
You may recall that in 2013 a gold CardiacSmart award was presented to the town, to recognize the community involvement in developing the community defibrillator scheme, the excellent take up of basic life support training and the work of the responders. On this occasion the gold award was given to the team itself and they received the top accolade to
mark the excellent standard of their work over the years, and for training members of the public in basic life saving skills. Peter Gillespie leads the training team and he was presented with a certificate celebrating his commitment and service to the community.
The team’s certificate and the trophy have been handed over to Grange Town Council for display in the cabinet in the foyer at the Victoria Hall.

Last month, we reported that Cartmel Young Farmers were aiming to pull a sledge full of presents from Flookburgh to Furness General Hospital. Grange Now were at Flookburgh Square at 6.45am on Saturday 17th December to see them set off. Wendy from Cockles opened the shop especially for the young farmers to ‘fuel up’ before setting off. On November 16th I attended, on behalf of the Victoria Hall fund, a delightful evening of a meal, quiz and cheque presentation with Grange Lions. A number of local groups were in attendance as they too were to receive generous donations from the Lions. Although not large in number, Grange Lions are certainly hard working and very generous to local groups for which I can only say a huge ‘Thank you’. At the end of November Councillor Endsor and myself joined the local Cubs group at the Scout Hut in Cartmel for the presentation of Silver awards to five Cubs and ex-Cubs, now Scouts. It was a very enjoyable session, meeting lots of the Cubs and some very proud parents. We are so lucky in this area to have such dedicated adults to continue running our local packs. It takes a lot of time and effort to do this and I would like to thank

On Saturday December 3rd, while Councillor Endsor was rallying the Chamber of Trade for the Extravaganza, I, with many others, was at the Victoria Hall Charity Christmas Fair. This was a very enjoyable (though exhausting) event and we raised over £750 to be split between this year’s Mayor’s charity, the Alzheimer’s Society and the Victoria Hall fund. Many thanks to all those who helped on the day at any of the Charity stalls, who donated items for the raffle or tombola or who came along and opened their purses wide. And last but by no means least, was the Chamber of Trade Christmas meal in aid of the Mayor’s charity. A great time was had by all and well over £100 was raised which will be winging its way to the Alzheimer’s Society. May I take this opportunity to wish you a happy, healthy and hopefully prosperous New Year.

Tim’s Column I hope you had a great Christmas and are looking forward to a good 2017.
This is the time of year when I like to take stock a bit. Think about what we have achieved in the past year and plan what challenges we face in the coming year.
Without doubt our biggest challenge in 2017 will be health care. We have just seen yet another message from the our local hospital trust asking people to stay away from the accident and emergency unit at the hospital in Lancaster. At some point they are simply going to have to face up to the fact that for a whole variety of reasons more and more people are choosing to go to A&E. Press releases and messages on Twitter are not really going to do much about this. What the Trust needs to do is look at expanding their services in this area and an obvious way to do this would be to upgrade the Primary Care Assessment Centre in the hospital in Kendal to an Urgent Care Centre.

day. It was really worrying that the Chancellor had absolutely nothing to say about the funding of healthcare in his Autumn statement. Mrs May needs to start showing a bit of leadership and get her ministers to start taking the crisis faced by our health services seriously. If you want to help me in my campaign to get something done then you can still sign the petition just put “Tim Farron stop hospital cuts petition” into whatever search engine you use and follow the links. My other big focus will be on encouraging local businesses. A year on from Storm Desmond there are still plenty of companies coping with the problems caused by the desperate flooding we experienced this time last year. I am pushing the Government to get on with putting in place the flood prevention measures needed in Kendal as quickly as possible. But on the other side we need to support our local businesses as much as possible. I was particularly proud to be able to invite a number of local firms down to Parliament to celebrate “Cumbria Day”, marking the first anniversary of our flooding. This is really only the beginning, we need to do a lot more to support all the amazing firms we have around here. Raw Milk Rice Pudding 2016 was a good year for our raw milk, which comes straight from the Low Sizergh cows. We had wins in the National Trust Fine Farm Produce Awards and the inaugural Delicious Magazine Awards, and the average daily sales from the vending machine have exceeded expectation. This premium product is now a much loved ingredient as well as first choice for drinking. While dishes are focussed on warmth, comfort and wholesomeness in the early part of the new year, try raw milk in rice pudding, which is very, very creamy and satisfying. Use it also for the smooth white sauces that accompany fish, rarebit and cheesy cauliflower, for the perfect porridge, and for rich, milky coffees. Ingredients
1.2 litres (2 pints) Low Sizergh raw milk 140g (5oz) pudding rice 110g (4oz) caster sugar Knob of Carron Lodge butter Ground nutmeg (for sprinkling) Method
1. Preheat the oven to 140℃. Butter a large ovenproof dish. 2. Bring the raw milk to a simmer in a saucepan. Stir in the pudding rice and caster sugar. Pour the mixture into the ovenproof dish. Top with the knob of butter and sprinkle with nutmeg to taste. 3. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Stir the pudding halfway through baking.

The Co-workers of Mother Teresa send a hearfelt thanks to all who contributed so generously to the Christmas appeal for the Barrow, Ulverston and Millom foodbanks, and to our friends who helped to receive and sort the goods. The van was loaded to the roof, and not another bag could have been squeezed in. Whether this bonanza was due to it being Christmas, or to the change of venue being more central - several folk came in, asked what we wanted, and went straight across to the co-op.

January is one of the worst months. Christmas is over, you feel as flaccid as an old party balloon, probably still shackled to your resolutions, so slip the left over sherry into your pocket and nip down to the allotment for some ‘exercise’ and to ‘look’ at ‘stuff’. Just make sure you don’t grab advocaat by mistake. There might not be many Snowballs in hell but there is definitely a place for (the devil’s) advocaat.
While you’re there you can recycle your old Christmas tree, slugs hate pine needles. I’m not sure whether it’s the prickliness or the pinene compounds but it does genuinely seem to keep them at bay. Christmas trees also burn very well and make wonderfully crackly fire-lighters at a soggy time of year. Dayglo pink and acid yellow; the colours of forced rhubarb are incredible. It’s much more tender than the summer crop and luckily it’s more an act of gentle persuasion than force to
produce it. You can use traditional terracotta forcing pot or a giant plastic plant pot, remembering to cover the holes to prevent any sunlight getting in. Choose a crown sometime towards the end of this month and pop your receptacle over the top (advantage of the plastic pots is that they won’t crack, I’ve seen the terracotta ones split in two by the powerful, swelling, emergent stems). Have a cheeky peep at them after a week or so to check they are doing OK and when they’ve got to the size you want, pick them. You may notice ants crawling up the stalks, from what I can gather they are taking advantage of the sugary sap that basically oozes out of the tips. The plants don’t fare too well if you force the same one every year, three crowns, one forced each year, is probably an optimal number in terms of rotation and space.
It’s also probably worth checking over your seeds, make sure you’ve got what you need before the shops run out (there was a bit of a Leek drought last year) along with their sell by dates. I usually only buy fresh seed if they are five years out of date unless there are obvious signs of deterioration, then I sow the old ones and some of the fresh ones on my first sowing to double check their viability!
The Hawfinch
The hawfinch is a large finch, with striking plumage and a very large bill, and they feed on hornbeam haws, hence their name. Not a great deal is known about the hawfinch. They pop up in winter, breed in spring and are rarely seen throughout the summer. They are difficult to see, as they spend most of their time feeding high in the canopy, making it almost impossible to see them when the canopy is closed.
Even their call is difficult to pick up, as it sounds like other woodland birds, such as robin, goldfinch and bullfinch. Their song is also difficult to hear. I was once only a few yards away from a singing male, and I could hardly hear it. It’s only when you ‘get your ear in’, so to speak, that you can pick out it’s
distinctiveness amongst the other woodland bird calls. They nest high in the forks of trees, very exposed and vulnerable to predators such as jay and grey squirrel. I was first aware of these unusual birds in 2001 when we had a flock of about 40. Then, I only had sporadic sightings of one’s and two’s, and in 2013 we had 30 turn up and find a nest site just prior to this. Last year, a flock of 17 passed through, whilst overall we had a bout 60 sightings up until June. While they like to feed on hornbeam haws, we only have a few of these trees in Grange, so it’s more likely they are feeding on wild cherry, but I have seen them feed on beech, yew tree buds and even larch buds. In flight, they resemble a starling, however their striking white wing bars are a giveaway. They also sometimes emit a metallic click too.

Better Care Together Better Care Together is the name given to a local programme of activity across Morecambe Bay aimed at making our health and care services work closer together. The programme was set up in 2012 but is now beginning to make improvements to care experienced locally by the Morecambe Bay public.
At its heart – Better Care Together aims to bring care closer to people’s homes, and reduce the reliance on expensive hospitals – unless a patient needs only the services a hospital provides. Already 2,500 local people have seen Better Care Together in action – last year 1,500 patients were treated in the community rather than hospital thanks to a system called Advice and Guidance – where a GP can get advice from a hospital specialist. Another 1,000 have been treated at their opticians rather than hospital for minor eye conditions

in the first two months of a new scheme which has been put into place locally.
A key plank for Better Care Together is that 11 partners – all the organisations providing health and care locally – including social services, community services, hospitals and GPs, are working together as the Bay Health and Care Partners. Another key plank is that they are introducing Integrated Care Communities. These are local clinical staff from across all the organisations working with their communities, charities and elected members, to work on priorities for the local area.

Grange Town Council meeting
Full town council met on Monday 12th December. Prior to the start of the meeting, the Chairman, Tricia Thomas, received a letter from Councillor Judith Shapland stating she has resigned from the Council with immediate effect. This leaves a ‘casual vacancy’. From 4th January, Grange Town Council will display a notice for fourteen days. Councillor Joanna Greenway, reported back on the SLDC Consultation: Development Management Policies which she attended on 1st December. She stressed the need to put forward the Council’s views on planning, as this document will lay the planning rules for the future. The deadline is 5th January 2017. The council discussed inviting Morecambe Bay Partnership to ‘re-visit’ improving provision for cyclists including improved signage and the installation of cycle racks.
During the ‘Have your Say’ section, former Councillor, Nick Thorne, reminded the Council that 78% of residents had supported a cycleway along the prom and suggested to the Council that the residents, should be listened to and should be implemented. Resident, George Parr, also requested that the prom be used as the designated cycleway. The next meeting will place on Monday 16th January in the Victoria Hall at 7pm.
Lawrie Woodley on ‘Growing old’ Perhaps ‘Ageing’ sounds kinder, but the fact remains, the impact of getting older is more noticeable after retirement. The majority of people don’t like the symptoms as they become more evident – but consider the alternative! When we are younger we can easily laugh at the ‘losing it’ type jokes but later on in life they somehow seem a little more unkind. Strangely, it’s O.K. to jest about it among ourselves who are of a similar age but find it harder to take, perhaps, when mentioned in a somewhat disparaging way by younger folk. Obviously, my views and concerns are mainly restricted to the male population and I can’t speak for the ladies who are going through a similar process themselves. Men are besieged by press articles telling them that they should consult their doctor more often and that seems to add to the ‘pressure’ of getting older. Trouble is, any new symptoms could just be the natural results of getting older, or they could be the indication that something’s wrong. Most men take the, not unreasonable, view that the
‘machine’ is starting to break down as it gets older – in much the same way as any engine would – but, not being human mechanics, can’t identify what’s causing the problem. Thus, they either say ‘What can you expect?’ and get on with life or they fret about consulting the doctor and wasting his/her time and becoming hypochondriacs. With the growing pressure on doctors’ time this reluctance to consult is enhanced. Men with little lumps and bumps or strange bruises etc. would pass them off as just that – passing; women, on the other hand seem to be more aware of unusual developments and either talk about them among themselves or take themselves off to the doctor. They’ve been encouraged for a long time now to check their breasts for lumps whereas men probably still don’t check their testicles regularly enough to check for cancerous growths. Men would no more talk about their health problems than fly and it’s only when they’ve had a stroke (if only a minor one) or a heart attack that they’ll discuss things with their colleagues or family. I, personally, was amazed when I had first indication
of heart ‘issues’ that when I mentioned them to my friends it transpired that all of them were on medication of one form or another for symptoms I was never aware of. We then started comparing notes of dosages, frequencies and long term prognoses! This would never happen, I suspect, among the female population. Is this because they go through menstruation, childbirth and the menopause and are familiar with health considerations? One of the earliest ageing signs is the need to go to the toilet more often. A source of merriment for the young but more and more inconvenience as one ages. ‘Spending a penny’ is getting more expensive and finding a toilet in public places is getting harder as local authorities close down public conveniences to save money. Another sign is the lack of flexibility. At first this can show in having to kneel down to tie shoelaces rather than stoop and this progresses to finding somewhere to lift a foot up to as opposed to having difficulty kneeling. The old joke about finding something else to do whilst bending down becomes more truthful. Eventually, of
course, this will develop to needing help putting on socks and having to sit down to put on underpants. Part of this lack of flexibility will also reveal itself in trying to straighten up too quickly and so putting one’s back out. Recovery from having a back muscle in spasm can take some time and is susceptible to recurrence. It also emphasises the need to be careful when lifting heavier objects. Grange resident, Lawrie Woodley has written this interesting and informative articles. I am sure his sentiments will resonate with many of readers. Sport England invest heavily in Fell Foot On 7th December, the National Trust announced the start of an exciting new project for Fell Foot Park. Thanks to a £500,000 investment from Sport England, a major new sports facility will be built on the site. The £1.9 million development is part of a series of improvements to the National Trust-owned site, which include: the restoration of the 19th century boathouses, a new café, landscaping the historic garden area and a small glamping area. These proposals were given planning permission in October 2015 by the Lake District National Park. The new facility will include new changing rooms and showers for swimmers, sailors, canoeists and rowers, also runners, walkers and cyclists in fact any kind of outdoor sport activity; as well as

club and community social space and meeting rooms, for training courses, yoga, buggy fit and other activities. 1961, and Windermere Rowing Club who joined us in 2014. The new building will be sited out of the risk area providing longer term a sustainable and usable building enabling people to use Fell Foot all year round. The park will be open as usual over the winter, and fully open from Easter. The new facilities will be opening October 2017.

On Saturday morning (26 November), whilst the rest of Cumbria had glorious sunshine, Fell Foot sat in the freezing mist. This did little however to dampen the enthusiasm of the 150 ‘parkrunners’ who turned up to celebrate the 100th parkrun.

We’ve heard it before – and most people in the club said the same thing before joining! Instead, you’ll find a group of friendly, encouraging folk who don’t take things too seriously. Yes, amongst our ranks are seasoned marathon runners (didn’t think I’d be there 5 years ago!), ultra runners including a few of more mature years to prove that age doesn’t get in the way of success. Also in the club are those who just like to get out and enjoy the beautiful scenery around them. Afraid we’ll go too fast? We ‘loop’ so that those at the front never get far ahead before looping back to encourage those at the back. Too far? We’ll encourage anyone up to 5 km distance by building the distance slowly and not running all the way (you run when you can, walk the rest and build it up from there). For seasoned runners, our ‘usual’ training distance is about 8-10 km in the winter months. Join us to develop your running. To make the 100th parkrun special, the National Trust did a Trust Takeover, where National Trust staff took on all the volunteer roles so the team that usually run the event could all join in with the parkrun. Alongside Fell Foot parkrun celebrating its 100th run, Ron the Event Director was also celebrating his 100th parkrun. This led to the normal volunteer team, becoming the “Ronettes” singing a spirited version of “Da Doo Ron Ron.
The Fell Foot parkrun is a really friendly event, starting every Saturday at 9am. Why not go down and give a try. You’ll be sure of a warm welcome.
Over the past few years, Age UK has gained itself a reputation nationwide for running Men’s Walking Football groups, and South Lakeland is no different. Our new 18-strong group in Milnthorpe is going from strength to strength and we would like to set something up in the Grange and Cartmel area.
As a result, we are holding a ‘taster’ session at the Victoria Hall in Grange to see what interest there may be, with a view to setting up regular sessions. It will be held on Tuesday 17 January at 18.45 hrs to 19.45 hrs and anyone over 50 is welcome.
The rules of walking football are much the same as running football with a few differences. The teams are smaller (between five and seven-a-side), free kicks are indirect, kick-ins replace throws, there are no off-sides, the ball must be kept below head height and, of course, anything so much as a jog is prohibited!

BOWLING Allithwaite Bowling Club. Old and new members are invited to sign on for the 2017 bowling season.
The club has recently added another team to the seven established ones and offers a chance for members to play competitively. Matches run from April to end of August.
There is a great social side within the club, with social get togethers, usually at weekend, where everyone brings food for the buffet until the table is groaning! Friendly matches with other local clubs are in place and also add to the mix. Every year the club organises a charity day with a BBQ, fun competitions and all the funds go to a local charity. New members are ‘buddied’ with a friendly experienced member, to help with technique and rules of play. Members are free to use the green at any time

GROUP & PERSONAL TRAINING Dave Stevenson,60, started at Wellfit in April 2015. As a fire officer, Dave has to complete and pass an annual fitness test and needed to improve his level of fitness to reach the required standard. Within a few months of regular training at Wellfit, attending three to four classes a week, Dave passed the test with ease. He has now been at the fitness centre in Albert Road, Grange for over 18 months and is really feeling the benefit of exercise for both his mind and body. Dave has lost over three stone and has reduced his waist size from 38/40 to 32 inches. Dave works twelve hour shifts and says he is feeling younger and fitter, has more stamina and sleeps much better than he used to. He also feels that mental tasks are easier to complete and has an overall sense of wellbeing and happiness.
We asked Dave why he enjoyed training at Wellfit. “ I like the social aspect of working out with other people, the motivation that group training provides as well as the encouragement from the trainers. There’s a great range of classes with times to suit everybody and no two workouts are ever the same.”
Consistency is the hardest part of sport The hill gets steeper and I start to slow down, but he seems to find another gear and glides effortlessly up the climb as I struggle for breath. For me this is quite a workout but for Sam Lashley, it’s just another day at the office.
At 21 and living in Milnthorpe, Sam eats sleeps and breathes cycling. From the age of 14 he started casually riding with friends, progressing on to racing cross country and now racing for the Wheelbase Road Team, the bike shop where he works full time.
“It’s a natural transition, I decided that I was rubbish at downhill so I thought if I got really fit I’d get fast uphill, so I did that.” 2014 took a turn for the worse when cycling on a local trail, Sam was thrown over the handlebars after grabbing the front brake too hard, snapping his kneecap in half. This injury saw Sam lose the majority of muscle mass from his left leg, due to not being able to exercise the limb for 7 months. “Injury is a risk in any sport, to get better you have to go faster and to
an extent, it’s not ‘if’, it’s ‘when’”. Sam explained. “You don’t get any professional that hasn’t injured themselves at some point, although I should have been wearing kneepads.”
Sam’s recovery with help from specialists in Staveley and Carnforth has seen him come back stronger; coming 4th at the National Cross Country Championships and 2nd at the Scottish Cross Country Championships, being beaten by a rider who, ironically, he won over the week before. “I hate losing more than anything.” He said.
“Consistency is the hardest part of sport, if you want to get better you have to train six or seven days a week, sometimes getting up at 5am to go for a ride. I’ve had to work hard to get to where I am today and I want to see how far I can go with a career in cycling.” Coming back so quickly from such a long-term injury, Sam Lashley is taking his training and competing to the next level. He plans to race a season on the road with the Wheelbase team and after that, who knows? Definitely watch this space.

St Paul’s, Grange
To welcome in the New Year there will be a ‘One Team’ Eucharist Service held in St Paul’s at 10.30am on New Year’s Day with Rev’d Rachel Stavert presiding. After the events of 2016, the Carmel Peninsula Team Ministry have an opportunity to join together in worship and look forward to new beginnings. It would seem appropriate that The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which begins on January 18th,has the theme of Reconciliation – The Love of God Compels Us, which is inspired by verses from St Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians and seems particularly relevant for our team ministry at this time. Each year we join with our friends from St Paul’s, Lindale for the annual Joint Patronal service for the Conversion of St Paul which in 2017 will be held in St Paul’s, Lindale at 11.00pm on Sunday 22nd January followed by lunch in Lindale Village Hall. Please note that there will be no services in either St Paul’s or the Fell Church on that morning. The redesigned Parish office is now in its new location in the old meeting room and the other improvements are well underway and we are very pleased with the progress so far. Information about the reordering of St Paul’s can be found on the noticeboards in church as well as the proposals for the new social area.

Cartmel’s Hidden Gem
Tucked away in the heart of Cartmel, close by the old ford across the River Eea, lies the simple gothic style Methodist Church. It was built on the site of a former tan yard purchased, for £60, by John Gunson of Sparkbridge, a bobbin mill owner. The foundation stone was laid by Miss Ripley of Ulverston on 28th November, 1871 and the church, which cost about £450, opened on 1st October, 1872. Before then, meetings had been held in homes throughout the district and in Cartmel Gatehouse and
Friends Meeting House. The church originally seated 150 but the membership has never been anything but small. At the centenary in 1972, it
totalled 23, the largest in its history. The building is known as the ‘Chapel by the River’ but in 2007 the river was found to be a lot closer; underneath the subsiding floor, three large holes were discovered, formed by the river flowing in and out. The holes and water are still there but the floor is now on a concrete raft. The warm, comfortable church, houses a warm, friendly Christian community with services every Sunday at 11am. Cartmel Quakers
A huge “thank you” to everyone who joined us on 24 November, for the concert by the Dorian Players in aid of the charity Shelterbox. The evening was wonderful in every sense, bringing a wealth of music, laughter and warmth on a cold dark winter’s night. With an amazing array of medieval and renaissance instruments, we were treated to a programme of music, songs and readings, and several of us took up the invitation to have a closer look (and even a tentative play!) at the instruments during the interval. The icing on the cake was that we raised £420 for Shelterbox, which will fund almost three quarters of a shelter box for a family in need. So thank you once again, for filling our Meeting House with joy and for helping to raise money for such a fantastic cause.

On November 22nd, the Women’s Network at Grange were very pleased to have Ros Harrison, a very talented flower arranger.
Her theme was ‘Christmas’. She made some very attractive arrangements, including a dainty one for a table centrepiece, an elaborate one, which was used in Church the following Sunday; and a very red and green Christmassy one. She also made an Advent Wreath, that we have also utilised in the Advent

Members of the church are going to be visiting the nursing home and other residences, for carol singing and we are looking forward to having the children of Grange and District who take part in the pantomime, taking a Sunday Evening Carol Service.
Repairs to the Church ceiling are now going ahead and we hope to be able to use the church again, early in the New Year. A Blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone. on January 18th by a talk about Boarbank, & on January 25th, David Lamb tells us about the 125 year history of the Church on this site. Each Church is encouraged to have their usual weekday worship in the normal way, at the normal time. These Services will hopefully also make use of the published material for the Unity Week. Folks from other Churches are encouraged to join wherever the worship is happening during that week, 18 25th. January.

What next for your savings?
A recent report by financial magazine Moneyfacts showed that the number of savings accounts paying 1% or more has halved in 2016 as reductions outweigh rate rises for the 14th consecutive month. Today, less than a third of the 659 savings accounts currently on the market can beat or match inflation, and now with inflation rising these low rates are eating away at the value of your money. The report went on to say “Low interest rates and rising inflation will deter savers “. It’s hard to imagine that just one year ago 67% of accounts in the savings market paid 1% or more, compared to only 34% doing so today, showing how cruel the past year alone has been on savers. Consumers will need to be savvier than ever when moving their cash to find the best possible returns. Splitting a pot between fixed rates and instant access, for instance, will give them a bit of flexibility and an opportunity to earn a higher rate but these are still falling short of many savers expectations, and unfortunately will do for some time.

Arnside Choral Society offers a warm welcome
Rehearsals take place at Arnside’s WI Hall in Orchard Road on Tuesdays at 7.30 and the Society offers a very warm welcome to anybody wishing to join in singing a variety of styles. There is no audition, but a team spirit, an abundance of enthusiasm, a sense of humour and the ability to sing in tune would be very beneficial! To join, all you have to do is turn up to any rehearsal or concert. Cartmel Choral Society meets again in the Village Hall on Monday 9th January to begin rehearsals for the April concert in the Priory when they will perform the popular Faure’s Requiem and Handel’s Messiah Part 2. The Society prides itself on being a very friendly choir that welcomes all musical abilities. No auditions are required. Buttons, your bunny! or was it box? The Saturday audience may have struggled to remember their one line, but not Tom Shepherd, whose performance as Buttons was flawless. His timing, and comedic expressions, were spot on and he looks certain to have a long future in acting. He pulled the show together beautifully and was very patient with us (the audience) and we got it right in the end. I think! Tiny pocket rocket, Emily Kate Unsworth, had the audience in stitches with her hilarious performance as Legget and she choreographed her own dance in her second role as the fox. The West End beckons. Reece Carter played her ‘straight man’ to perfection. Amy Shepherd, sister of Tom, excelled as the ghastly Ruby (Rubella) and was, as ever, in very fine voice. Playing opposite her, Jackson Taylor-Smith, gave a solid performance in his debut with Grange Youth Operatic, playing Baron Hardup. Reece Carter played the straight man and was faultless in his role as ‘Bodgett’. Molly Cowley was in fine voice for the lead as Cinderella and she played the role extremely well as did ‘her prince Charming’ the lovely Jess Walmsley. Izzie Shires played her role of chamberlain with great

Very well done to Faye Hill. On stage with just Cinderella, her fabulous fairy godmother’s wig came off with her cloak. We all held our breath but she just carried on regardless - a true pro. A mention must go the props and set department, in particular Sarah and Steve Shires. The stagecoach, built by Steve, was amazing fantastic as were all the sets which wouldn’t look out of place in a professional production. Artist of the Month: Ruth Sutton
Where do you like to write and what motivates you?
I write mainly in a little office space I’ve created upstairs in my house, or in the ‘shed’ at the far end of my garden. Much depends on the weather. To start with the historian’s curiosity drives the research. Once I have a story to tell and the plan is beginning to form I just want to write, and do so for several hours at a time once the words begin to flow. I find it very engaging and satisfying to create something worth reading and then edit to get as close as I can to the vision in my head about of the
On Thursday 12th January, Cumbrian author Ruth Sutton will be at Grange Library to talk about her latest book, Fatal Reckoning, the long-awaited sequel to Cruel Tide.
Ruth says: “Fatal Reckoning picks up the story two years on, adds another twist and brings back our two young investigators, journalist Judith Pharaoh and DC Sam Tognarelli to try to finish what they started.” As with Cruel Tide, this book is set in Barrow and Whitehaven in 1971.
However, Ruth is best known for her ‘Between the mountains and the Sea’ trilogy which comprised of: A Good Liar, Forgiven and Fallout. Grange Now talked to Ruth to find out a bit more about the woman behind the words. She told us: “Ten years ago I moved north from Salford to Waberthwaite in West Cumbria, and love being here, close to my daughter and her family. My partner Mick and I both value our independence and have kept our own houses, getting together more often now that we’ve both retired.” Were you born in Cumbria?
I wasn’t born in Cumbria, but both my parents were, and all my childhood holidays were spent here, with relatives or at a guesthouse in Silecroft. I was born in Stockport. When I was 15 my mother, who was widowed, moved to Backbarrow to be nearer her

Looking forward to our next programme of play readings we kick off the New Year at 7.30 pm Grange Institute on Thursday 5th January with Table Manners, a play from Alan Ayckbourn’s trilogy The Norman Conquests. Our favourite playwright, this was the first full length play of his we ever staged. Remember the ‘cornflakes scene’ in that 1997 production directed by Kath Bolton? Martin Gregory as Norman who was joined by Freda Bunce, Sue Lobo Guererro, John McDonagh, Fiona Russell and Norman Wileman. Rather like former school students attending re-unions, it would be really good to see some of that cast join in this time around.
‘home’ and I went to Ulverston Grammar School for two years before going back to Manchester to university. You didn’t write your first novel until you were 60. What did you do in your last life?
I was a secondary teacher, then a deputy Head, then an LEA adviser before I stepped off the career ladder at 40 in 1988 and became a freelance education consultant specialising in assessment. I did this work until ‘retiring’ in 2015, travelling and working constantly round the world, but mainly in New Zealand and across Canada. In that role I wrote several books, but didn’t turn to fiction until I was 60, having thought about doing so for many years. Why did you write the novel and what was your motivation behind it?
A fortnight later, 7.30 pm at Grange Institute, Thursday 19 January, we will read linked pieces from Ayckbourn’s Confusions – a rather ‘pick and mix’ affair, to be followed by the first public airing of Ken Smyth’s latest one act play Who Do You Think You Are?. Borrowing the title from the TV series this ‘dramatic view’ exposes the more extreme implications of uncovering one’s family tree and the play is to be performed by the Cosgood Players, in collaboration with Grange Drama, in this year’s All England One Act Drama Festival at Victoria Hall in late March 2017. Cosgood Players? So what’s in a name? To be precise, H. Driffold Cosgood is the full name of a fictional flamboyant actor manager (played by Ron Moody) in charge of a repertory company in the Miss Marples film, Murder
At first the novel was going to be fairly light story set around the building of the new school in Waberthwaite in 1937. As I thought about it the story got darker and the central character Jessie Whelan developed as the ‘good liar’ of the title, who lied to protect herself from social opprobrium even though she kept on taking risks. I was interested in the life-style in my village in the early years of the last century and the place of women at a time of rapid technological change. The first book grew into a trilogy covering twenty years, from the paraffin lamps of 1937 to 1957 and the arrival of nuclear power. The lives of Jessie and her family mirror those changes. The 1957 story ‘Fallout’ is set against the backdrop of the reactor fire at Windscale, a story that was shrouded by the Official Secrets Act until 2007 and deserved to be retold.

I read widely and all the time. Crime fiction, but not the very violent stuff that I find too troubling. Biographies – the huge 2 volume biography of Charles Darwin was wonderful. Occasional modern fiction. Currently I’m reading the Essex Serpent and a biography of Wernher von Braun.

Dear Editor, AN EVENING IN VICTORIA HALL
It might easily have been called ‘Some enchanted evening’ as it included songs from the shows. Sally Haines, of Victoria Hall, undertook to put on a fundraising evening for the hall itself as its support by SLDC is to cease ere long. Plans are afoot to try and make the hall viable and Sally, WHO IS Victoria Hall to everyone, decided to arrange a small concert to get the money raising ball rolling, so to speak. It was a glorious evening with contributions by so many local people, including readings from our Mayor and Vicar. How enjoyable to witness the talents of folk - from juggling through readings, classical piano playing to solo and duet singing. Added to this was the Sands Band who not only gave us some real toe-tapping music, but accompanied the audience as they sang well loved carols. There was such enthusiasm everywhere and everyone had an most uplifting time.

What an excellent day of fun, shopping and relaxation with Grange Chamber of Trade in the grounds of St Charles Church and the Methodist Church Hall and dry weather. From the young children, in their prams, reaching out to touch the artificial christmas tree to see it move, to the child in the adults delighting in the wide variety of goods and services on offer (and returning to the cash machines with monotonous regularity). The day offered the chance and the time to shop, eat,
It demonstrated a high regard for Sally, who compered the whole evening, and for the continued existence of the hall itself. I’m sure it surprised many people at the amount of talent, existing ‘under wraps’ as it were, that was on show. It certainly surprised Sally at the number that turned up! Added to all of this was a goodly supply of mulled wine and shortbread biscuits together with a nice little raffle. Another way of raising funds besides the very reasonable entrance fee, all of which which will go towards funds.
As ever, there were lots of volunteers to make the whole thing possible and Sally can be justly proud of the evening’s work. It was a one-off, of course, but demonstrates that, with a little ingenuity, another sort of ‘do’ is possible for everyone to support. Meanwhile Sally, take a bow, and, after all of this, a bit of a break. May she, and everyone involved, have a very Happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Lawrie Woodley

Inspiring CPS art pupils
Year 9 pupils visited Manchester’s Whitworth Art Gallery in early December to see how art reflects life. Pictured is Idris Khan’s ‘Repetition of Sentences’ forms the shape of a giant explosion that represents his emotions after the sudden death of his mother and baby. He draws inspiration from the history of art, music, philosophy and theology laying and manipulating images and text in a conversation around memory, experience and society. Pupils also viewed The Deanna Petherbridge exhibition, bringing together over 40 pen and ink drawings from across a 45 year career. Since the 1960s, she has pioneered critical thinking on drawing and its place in art and architecture. Pupils also visited the Portraits Exhibition which crosses centuries, continents and media and includes works by Picasso, Bacon, Freud, Auerbach, Paolozzi and Stanley Spencer. Back in school, pupils will have fun communicating key aspect of their own lives through art taking inspiration from the visit to Whitworth. May we take the opportunity to wish our school and the wider community a very Merry Christmas and all the best for a happy and healthy 2017. Thanks particularly for all the gifts and kind wishes in the run up to Christmas – we are very grateful and appreciate your ongoing support.

A very busy term which included lots of school visits. On 1st November, Barn Owls visited St Catherine’s Eco-footprint house and woodland. They travelled back in time to the Stone Age and made axes, slingshots and created some Stone Age artwork. They then created a human timeline with artefacts to explain how the Stone Age changed over time and led into the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. The children had a fantastic day and were very thankful to Ro and Debs of Woodmatters in Kendal for leading the day. Eagle owls went on a visit to Tullie House museum in Carlisle, where they participated in a carousel of Viking themed activities. The children enjoyed dressing up in chain mail and were

astounded by the weight of this armour. They have also been out in the community, singing Christmas carols for the luncheon club at Abbot hall and at the Old Vicarage. The younger children performed their enchanting, modern Nativity: Christmas with the Alien.
Cartmel Primary December set off at a pace, with a fantastic whole school trip to The Dukes in Lancaster to see Pinocchio. This fast-paced, energetic physical theatre performance captivated our young people and creatively put across the message of truth and kindness being rewarded. We had preceded the visit with workshops for each class from the Education Team at The Dukes, focusing on the themes of the play.
Our Nativity took place at The Priory Church again and was extremely well attended by
family and friends, including many members of The Priory congregation. The whole school was involved in the acting and singing, with wonderful costumes made by parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles etc! We were

It was absolutely delightful. The children were dressed in magnificent costumes and they sang their little hearts out. As you would expect from such young children, there were one or two very special moments including: the Innkeeper, who, when asked if there was any room at the Inn he replied, “Yep”. to the couple and said simply: “nope”. Wonderful. Two further highlights came from Joseph, a definite star in the making, who first showed Mary how to knit properly and then how

Flookburgh Primary Our last weeks in school have seen lots of festive fun including parties, stories around the Christmas tree and of course our fantastic nativity performance.

Grange Primary During the Autumn Term our Years 4, 5 & 6 studied the two World Wars which culminated in the holding of a family VE day celebratory tea party where parents were invited to sample the themed food prepared by the children.
Our “Strictly Nativity” was a great success with an excellent turn out of parents, relatives and friends to see the Reception, Y1 and Y2 children perform. Our Nursery children staged their nativity play at our annual end of term Carol Service at St Paul’s this year. We hope you managed to catch our school choir when they were performing at the Christmas Extravaganza, the fake snow machine added a magical touch to the event! The School

Many of us (myself included) resolve to improve our fitness over the coming months; with this in mind we are continuing our Healthy Hearts courses in both Ulverston and Grange, with Elaine Towler at St Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston on
Tuesday mornings and Ann Stemp at the Leisure Centre on Thursday mornings. Elaine is also continuing with her Thursday morning sessions at Grange Methodist Hall and we are taking bookings for 2 new Healthy Hearts classes at the same location for Monday afternoons, please telephone 015395 36323 for timings and bookings. For those of us wishing to exercise our grey matter we have a number of courses to consider. We are now taking bookings for a new Beginners Italian class, with Liz Loreto, to be held at Cartmel Priory School on Wednesday evenings. We are also taking bookings for a number of ever popular language courses including Beginners and Intermediate Spanish, Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced French, Italian for Improvers and Greek Beginners.
Our new Friends of Grange Library will be meeting at 2.30 pm on 16th January in Grange Library to plan how they will support the Library. If you would like to get involved please come along to the meeting. For younger children we now have Bear’s
Reading Adventure, where children receive their own storybook with some missing pictures which are on stickers (they will get a new sticker each time they visit the Library). When they have all 10 stickers they can get a Certificate! There is no monthly Dementia Information Session this month, these will restart on 7th February and thereafter on the 1st Tuesday of the month. Just a reminder that Grange Library opening times changed in August 2016 and the Library now opens at 10 am and closes for lunchtime from 1 pm to 2 pm, then is open until 5 pm Monday to Friday. We are also open on Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm. Please note that the Library is closed over the Festive Season from 1 pm on 24th December and re-opens at 10 am on Tuesday 3rd January 2017.

The December meeting was conducted by new President, Mrs Wendy Graham. Following the business, approximately sixty member heard Gilly Lewis’ entertaining talk, ‘Seeing the Funny Side’ which was very well received by everyone. Mrs Lewis, a very entertaining and expressive speaker, has had a very varied career; from teaching at Witherslack school, travelling to many overseas and U.K destinations as part of a theatre group, to speaking before the Queen and the late Queen Mother. Mince pies made by committee were served and inscribed paper knives given as a Christmas gift to all members. The next meeting is Tuesday January 3rd when Ken Taylor ‘s will be speaking about Macchu Pichu.

Grange over Sands NSPCC would like to thank all their friends and supporters who came to their Christmas Coffee Morning on Saturday, 26th November, and helped to raise the grand sum of £346.80p. Grange Lecture Society
In her illustrated lecture ‘In and Under the Vatican’, given on 22nd November, Professor Joyce Hill remembered visiting Vatican City as a research consultant. After describing the city and outlining its history, she recalled her accommodation in the very building where the present Pope has since chosen to live and amusing experiences like being saluted by Swiss Guards. She then spoke about the old 4th Century St Peter’s Basilica built above the site of Peter’s tomb by Constantine, compared it with the present one which eventually replaced it, and discussed the archaeological remains uncovered by excavations beneath the original floorlevel. On 29th November in his Nevile Burwell Memorial Lecture, ‘Poles at the Crossroads’, wildlife cameraman Doug Allan using his own film sequences and photographs talked about filming wildlife in the Polar Regions, compared the geography of the Arctic and Antarctic and discussed potential effects of climate change such as diminishing sea ice cover on polar bear and emperor penguin populations. On 10th January Keith Holmes will talk about ‘The Villas and Gardens of Lake Como’ and on 24th January Alastair Lack recalls ‘My Life in the BBC World Service’. The lectures begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

Grange Forum
Our first talk in the New Year is entitled, ‘The Great Divide Trail of the Canadian Rockies’. That sounds an exciting subject to kick off with, and will be staged on 10th January at the usual time of 10.15am. On 17th January, we are still in the hills as we learn about People and Mountains of Dhaulagiri, Nepal. This meeting starts at 2pm. The Club’s 69th Anniversary is celebrated on 24th January at Grange Hotel at 12 noon, there being no meeting at Abbot Hall that day, but there is a guest speaker after the lunch. Our last Victoria Hall meeting of 2016 was told about “The Forgotten Foods of Christmas” by food historian Ivan Day. The 2017 programme starts at 10.15 am on 17th January with “ Music in Nature”; Edward Lawton, a professional oboist, talking about music inspired by nature and playing excerpts from a selection of classical works. On 10th January (10.00 am) the “Local Explorers Group” will be getting together in Grange Institute to plan this year’s programme.. Two trips are already in the “Out and About” programme, a visit to the Forum in Barrow on 18th March to see “Barnam” and a coach excursion to Hadrian’s Wall on 4th May. Coffee Club
Last month, Rachel Stavert,the new Team Vicar at Allithwaite told how God had controlled her life’s journey as He had promised in Isaiah chapter 43 ‘I have called you by name, you are mine.’
Rachel was born and bred in Kendal. During much of her young life she had felt pulled between an active social life and the fascination of Christian faith. For a number of years Rachel juggled her work in Barclay’s bank and her church commitments. Then full time church work was gradually overtaken by training for ordination. Curacies in Penrith and Westmorland followed until she came to Allithwaite. last April. Throughout her Christian life Rachel has been much helped by the New Wine movement which seeks to equip the local churches by prayer, and group fellowships. As Cumbrian Area Leader, she has helped to organise a New Wine ‘Landmark, conference in Lancaster from next April 29th – May 1st All are welcome as they are to Coffee Club which begins 2017 with Eric Proudfoot, who has for several years regularly visited Nepal and will talk about ‘The Nepal Earthquake - One year on’. The meeting is on January 17th, at Abbot Hall Hotel, Kents Bank at 10.30am preceded by coffee from 10am.

On 9 November the Club enjoyed a visit from Alan Hoskins from SSAFA,the Armed Forces Charity. Alan gave a talk and received the monies raised at our latest street collections. We manned a stall at the Christmas Fair at the Victoria Hall on 3 December where Keith Buckler sold his range of delicious puddings “a plenty” in aid of the African Goat Project. On 7 December a festive occasion welcomed 14 RotaKids from Grange Primary School.They were presented with special tabards and individual certificates to mark their involvement.RotaKids provides under 12s the opportunity to lead and engage in important ,lively activities that will make a positive difference in their school,community and global development.At the end of the meal the children gathered round the piano for some beautifully sung Christmas carols accompanied by Ray Booth.At the meal £500 was presented to David Waugh of First Responders in recognition of their support at our highly successful Medical Emergency Day. A highlight of the winter season was the Club’s Christmas Lunch on December 14 with Chorley raffle and in house vocal entertainment.
Bay Community Singers
We enjoyed a busy autumn term with more than 60 singers signed up. We sang a variety of music including a Beach Boys’ medley which was great fun! Our term was rounded off with an informal concert in the URC Hall, and carol singing in Grange. We reconvene on Thursday 5th January, 7-9pm in the URC Hall on Kents Bank Road, Grange. Grange WI
Members had a delightful meeting in November. Potter Ken Lumb made an angel. Then members had a go at making one which didn’t prove as easy as Ken made it look. We then rounded off the evening with a brief catch up on WI business and then a delicious supper full of savoury delights and cakes and desserts; all washed down with mulled wine and damson gin (non-alcoholic beverages also available). Ken took away our angels for firing in his kiln and we collected them at our Festive Meal in early December. As usual the ‘At Home’ Bistro provided some super food and drinks and we had a Xmas raffle followed by a Secret Santa raffle. We end 2016 with 25 members and hope to recruit more in 2017 as we have an interesting and entertaining year ahead. The Grange over Sands Institute
Over the past twelve months this classic building on Main Street has had the benefit of considerable structural repairs and improvements. In addition, much work has been carried out by enthusiastic members and the accommodation provides particularly comfortable meeting rooms which are available for hire as well as two excellent snooker tables. The Annual General Meeting will be held at the Institute on Thursday 26th January at 7.30pm. The meeting will once again be open to members of the public and all are welcome so, whether or not you are an existing member or just interested in the way in which this public charitable organisation is run, come along and see

Grange Soroptimists
Club members combined forces with Windermere Soroptimists and were in Kendal on Nov 25th as part of the White Ribbon campaign for International Day for Eradication of Violence against Women. 800 stickers were given out to men asking them support the White Ribbon campaign and pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women. The club mounted a display in the library to mark the UN Day for Abolition of Slavery on December 2nd. Modern Day slavery is a growing problem with more people enslaved worldwide than at the height of the slave trade 200 years ago. Club member Cathy Lubelska gave a talk about Modern Day Slavery at the club meeting on Dec 6th On Dec 3rd members were in the Victoria Hall selling cakes and raised £148 for Soroptimist charities. Our next fundraiser will be the 50’s and 60’s disco Feb 11th. This was very popular when we held one two years ago. Look out for posters! Members relaxed and enjoyed their Christmas party at the Hampsfield House Hotel. Grange Masonic Lodge
The small masonic hall at Grange over Sands was filled to witness the installation of Stephen Pemberton as the new master of Arthur John Brogden Lodge. The lodge, which was formed in 1877, is named after one of its founders and its first master who was a member of the Brogden family who were responsible for constructing the railway line around Morecambe Bay to Barrow in Furness. It is not the first time Stephen has been the master of the lodge having occupied the position at lodges in Preston, Garstang and Lancaster. He joined the Grange lodge when he moved to Cartmel. The principal guest on the evening was Barrie Crossley who was accompanied by the Furness and South Lakeland group chairman Peter Schofield. To mark the occasion Stephen presented Barrie with a donation to charity of £300. Following the masonic formalities 55 members and their guests enjoyed a splendid 4 course meal in the lodge dining room.
Grange Ramblers
On 24th November six Ramblers set off a six mile walk from Bardsea sea front in brilliant weather, we walked through the village then onto the edge of Birkrigg Common, lunch was taken by Urswick tarn with reflection of blue sky. through the village with Iron age and Celtic Christianity as a backdrop and looking for the potent fertility symbol of Priapus Stone. On the trig point Birkrigg Common with superb 360 degree views, the snow projecting the mountains peaks from surrounding countryside, a final drink before descending to the foreshore. On 30th November 8 ramblers enjoyed the good weather, fine views of Smardale walk and ended with tea and cakes in the Newbiggin-on-Lune tea rooms/garden centre. Rambler’s Christmas lunch was on 3rd December, 25 Ramblers enjoyed a 3 course festive lunch and good companies at the Woodlands hotel. On Wednesday 7th December the rain stopped just as 9 Ramblers set off for a gentle 4 mile walk around the Sizergh estate, taking in Sizergh Fell, with prehistoric cairns and barrows on the crest, views of the Lyth valley, Flash Bank Deer Park and Helsington Church. The walk ended with a visit to the tearoom for refreshments.

The December meeting was well attended . The treasurer handed out envelopes for paying subscriptions next month.The post Christmas dinner will be at The Black Labrador pub in Underbarrow on January 24th. The Federation Quiz has raised £260 so far, with half going to Witherslack. Two ladies will go to Crook to attend the WI lunch party. The speaker, Susan Oliver, gave an excellent demonstration on Gift Wrapping. With great dexterity and economical materials she produced some lovely arrangements . Cartmel and District Flower Club held their Annual Gala Evening in Victoria Hall on Tuesday 13th December. We welcomed the very talented Flower arranger Allison Cooper with a demonstration entitled, ‘ Let’s create Christmas’, Allison showed some very imaginative arrangements and clever craft work, fabulous flowers orchid, amaryllis, roses, gladioli, delphinium, poinsettias and pot plants,beautiful festive arrangements lots of baubles and glitter. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening and all hoped to be lucky enough to win the raffle,we then gathered for wine and a mince pie,a magical way to celebrate the festive season.
