Over recent weeks, the Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service has been working hard to recruit on-call firefighters for 38 stations across the county to operate alongside professional full time firefighters in frontline situations. Successful candidates need no experience, can be male or female but must be motivated and able to pass the required physical tests to assess fitness levels. They will be fully trained to save lives. On average, there will be a call out two or three times a week which may last a couple of hours. Harry Denney, 19, from Kendal, followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the fire service. He started as an apprentice a year ago and for five months has been at Ulverston station, in the Ellers. It is staffed by regular and on-call firefighters with two fire engines based on site. It serves 11,500 people in Ulverston, 5000 more in the surrounding villages and towns and covers a rural area of around 10,000 hectares, equivalent to 10,000 international rugby union fields! Harry said, “It is a fantastic long term career with many opportunities to develop new skills, serve the community, save life and protect property.”
What is a fire fighter’s training like? “Full time recruits complete a 14 week intense training course; learning core skills, wearing breathing apparatus, learning scientific knowledge of fires and building construction, water delivery,
ladder skills, road traffic collisions, swift water rescue training and a working at height course. On-call recruits complete a 2 week training course developed on drill nights once a week, and attend specialist courses. An on-call firefighter is a part time post and the individual may do an everyday job as well, but is required to respond to emergencies, at a moment’s notice. Training is ongoing and scheduled into our daily routines.”
Do fire stations still have poles? “Ulverston and Kendal fire stations do not have a pole but Barrow, Carlisle East and West, Penrith, Whitehaven and Workington do.” At what age can you become a fire fighter? “You must be 18 years of age or older.” Are there any women fire fighters? “We have a female firefighter on our watch and numbers are increasing in the service.”
What does your job involve? “Fighting fires is only part of our job. We attend all sorts of incidents eg;
Road traffic collisions, Animal rescues, Height rescues, Water rescues, Hazardous materials, Special service calls Incident response unit (dealing with CBRNE incidents – chemical, biological, radiation, nuclear, explosives), high volume pump (dealing with water incidents, flooding)and working with other services.” Harry added, “When we aren’t attending incidents, we serve the community by conducting safe and well visits and different training courses.” What do your family think about you putting your life in danger to save others? “Because my father is in the fire service he knows how well trained I am to deal with risks and tackle different situations. He is very proud of what I have achieved. My mother says I have chosen the career that suits me, working with and protecting the public.” The Cumbria fire and rescue service motto is preventing, protecting, responding.

Mountain Rescue Charity Awareness Walk On 15th July two volunteer team members of the Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue Team (DFMRT), Will Reed and Tom Fairchild, plan to walk the span of the Team’s large operational area from Walney Island, in the south, to the summit of Harter Fell, at the top of the Duddon Valley. They will pass through Askam, Kirkby in Furness, Foxfield and Seathwaite, a total distance of 47 km. The purpose is to raise awareness of both DFMRT and Mountain Rescue in general. Will and Tom both live in the local area and have been members of the team for around two years. Tom works as an Engineer and Will is an Outdoor Tutor.
The team’s base at Foxfield will be open to members of the public from 11am to 1pm on the day, to coincide with the walkers passing through. Other team members will be on hand to show the team’s equipment, vehicles and control centre, with entertainment for all the family. DFMRT was formed in 2003, when the Furness and Millom rescue teams combined. On average it has about 35 callouts a year, ranging from locating missing or vulnerable people on the fells, rescues of those injured in any inaccessible places, to helping the North West Ambulance Service access remote places. DFMRT is made up of 40
voluntary members from all walks of life, providing a free emergency service for those in need - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Dalton lads selected for Invictus Games Toronto 2017 Army Sergeant Kevin Kell and double amputee Charlie Walker have been chosen to represent the UK at the Invictus Games Toronto 2017. Kevin, who lives in Dalton,has been in the army since 1995 and is coping with multiple medical conditions. As well as having a traumatic brain injury, psychological illness and a hearing impairment, he has been diagnosed with a brain tumour. Added to this, he lost his wife to cancer last year. However, training for the Invictus Games golf tournament, when it is simply himself playing against a ball, offers him a release of emotions and relieves stress since it takes him away from the wider world. He hopes the Games will provide him with the opportunity to socialise with others who have been in a similar situation so increasing his confidence in social situations, and he also hopes to inspire his young daughter as she grows up. “I want her to know that, no matter what life throws about you, you can rise above it,” he said. Charlie Walker, originally from Dalton will achieve competing in the Invictus Games for a third time as a member of the Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Rugby teams. He will also coach the Sitting Volleyball team. The former pupil of Dalton St Marys C of E Primary, Dowdales Senior School and Barrow Sixth Form College had both his legs amputated after contracting meningitis and believes sport is a vital part of his recovery process.
“It gives me a sense of purpose, a reason to set new higher goals: it keeps me physically fit and mentally strong,” said Charlie.
“The other reasons are harder to quantify but being selected lets me know that I haven’t been forgotten and gives me a chance to be with a military team again. Having competed and coached before, I believe I can help others achieve their goals.” Charlie now lives in Retford but his parents still live in Dalton. In recognition of the support given to him by Help for Heroes, mum Edith and dad Charles are now active volunteers for the Charity in Cumbria and hope to have a stand for the charity at the Cumbria Steam Gathering at the end of July. The Invictus Games Toronto 2017 will take place from 23th to 30th September.

Care for Your Boiler & Central Heating System
As we enter the summer season many home owners will switch off their central heating and take for granted that come autumn their boiler and radiators will continue to perform as usual, however, they should consider a few basic points to ensure their system works efficiently when it is required.
• Book a Service Every 12 Months Ensure you have the boiler and system serviced every year by a Gas Safe engineer to prolong the life of your boiler and keep your family safe. • Check Your Pressure & Attend to any Issues If the boiler is a combi type it is a good idea to check the system pressure gauge. This should be between 1 and 1.5 bar. If the pressure needs topping up regularly this would indicate a problem with the pressure vessel or a leak on the system pipework or valves which must be attended to. These tips will ensure that your central heating system is ready to work when you need it next and will keep your family safe & warm.

Ulverston leads the way in breastfeeding scheme SLDC’s new project, the ‘Breastfeeding Friendly Scheme’, is to be extended to other areas after a successful trial in Ulverston. Cafes and restaurants were keen to get involved by displaying a sticker and sharing information with their staff and volunteers about why it is important to support breastfeeding mums. Breastfeeding has many benefits for mums and babies, not least because the antibodies in breast milk protect babies against many childhood illnesses, and mums need to be able to feed their babies when they are out and about. Although it is illegal to ask a woman to stop breastfeeding in a public place such as a cafe, shop or on public transport, many mums are worried about negative attitudes if they feed their babies in public, even though once they try it, most mums find people don’t even notice. As Alison Coward, SLDC’s Public Protection Officer, says “For a new mum, breastfeeding in public can be a daunting task but the more support communities can offer, the easier it becomes.” To join the Breastfeeding Friendly scheme, business owners must sign a declaration agreeing that they and their staff will support a breastfeeding mother on their premises, offering a seat and a glass of water where possible.

2nd Ulverston Scout Group kicked off their conservation project to clean up and look after Bardsea Beach early June. Despite terrible weather during the week the Cubs persevered. Aged between 8 and 10, they scoured nearly a mile of beach for litter and debris washed up by the sea. Beavers and Scouts joined in as well, ranging in age from 6 to 14.

The aim of the project extends beyond getting the beach cleaned however, as Cub Scout Leader Amanda Seago, explains: “In undertaking this project we are building the cubs’ awareness of this issue and conservation more widely. It will also reinforce our ethos of contributing to the community in which we live. As a local scout group, we want the children to feel a sense of pride and ownership in keeping this section of Bardsea foreshore clean, both now and in the future”. Group Scout Leader Gavin Knott, has committed to a regular clean-up of the beach by the beavers, cubs and scouts over the coming year. Steve Benn, Senior Reserve Manager for Natural England who led the initial trial on Walney Beach with the Scout group, said: “I’m so encouraged by this initiative. Last season at North Walney National Nature Reserve, the cubs did a great job collecting almost 200kg in just four 1 hour sessions. They are a credit to their families, schools and cub groups”. Balloons, cotton buds (please do not flush them down the toilet!), plastic bags and
plastic containers are just some of the litter issues. Steve continued “Thousands of cotton bud sticks are collected from our beaches around Morecambe bay. A wide range of marine animals really suffer and die as a result of our litter habit. The cubs saw a pipefish at Walney that was washed ashore tangled up with marine litter. Many more marine animals that live some distance away from land under the sea are also seriously impacted and many die.” The cubs seem to enjoy it as well, as Eleanor Bangham, 10 put it: “It’s just like a big treasure hunt, but means it will make it safer for us to play on the beach in future as well as making it better for the animals that live here.” The project is supported by South Lakeland District Council, who kindly loaned litterpickers and other beach-cleaning essentials, and offered to pick up everything that is collected. Workmen were spotted recently sprucing up the paintwork on the cottages facing Brewery Street. While this is a welcome improvement for the approach into town, the rest of the buildings lie untouched over two years after planning permission was given for a ‘supermarket’. Concerns have also been expressed over the security of the site, with reports of young people finding ways into this unsafe area. The author tries to answer the questions of how we can try to date walls, who built them and why. highest concentrations of dry stone walls. Former Ulverston Mayor Mark Wilson has been pleased to see the building work at Elmhurst Care Home nearing its completion. A Grand Day Out at the Shows The summer agricultural shows are still a highlight of the local rural calendar, and open a window on the farming world. Originally started to improve animal husbandry and breeding, they offer a close-up view of the finest sheep, cattle and other livestock in the area. The shows also encourage country handicrafts and produce, and nowadays each has its own flavour and different attractions for all ages. Here is a selection of the summer shows, any or all of which make a great day out. Wednesday 26th July Ulverston & North Lonsdale Show Running since 1838 and now at Urswick, this large show is always hugely popular. Alongside the livestock, horticulture and craft competitions, it offers exotic poultry and rabbits, pet shows, showjumping and much more, with free buses from Ulverston and Barrow.
When you are a child, the summer holidays seem to stretch forever, and for parents they can sometimes seem endless as well! Not everyone goes away in the long break, so this issue looks at some of the children’s holiday activities available in this wonderful part of the world. From a whole week’s outdoor adventure course organised by YMCA or the leisure centre to free events in local visitor attractions, there’s plenty of opportunity for children to get out and about in the fresh air. If you go to the shore, though, remember the recent rescue at Arnside and don’t go way out on the sands when the tide is coming in. You can easily find out what the tide is doing by just putting ‘tide times ulverston’ into google, saving yourself guesswork and worry. Let’s hope the weather obliges!
Wednesday 2nd August Cartmel Agricultural Show In its beautiful setting, Cartmel Show still has its roots firmly in the agricultural and rural community, and is the perfect place for a traditional country show. Saturday 19th August Rusland Valley Horticultural Show The rather different Rusland Show started in 1871 as a small flower show and plant sale. Now it has expanded, and alongside marquees of home produce, crafts, children’s competitions and horticulture, you can enjoy the unique Lakeland sports of hound-trailing and fell-running. Saturday 26th August Millom & Broughton Agricultural Show Shining a light on rural life and skills, this show is also a must if you want to see Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, a sport like no other.
Saturday 2nd September Lowick and District Agricultural Society Show Round off the summer with another traditional country show, in the fine setting of Lowick Bridge.
Another look at two old favourites, Grizedale & Fell Foot The former private estates of Grizedale Hall and Fell Foot are nowadays open to the public, and offer a whole range of activities for either an action-packed or relaxing day out. Grizedale is famous for its vertiginous Go Ape course and challenging mountain bike trails, but you don’t have to be super-fit to enjoy the woods. For a start, along with a choice of mountain bikes, they now have electric bikes for hire so the slightly less athletic can still have a cycling adventure. Children under 10 need no longer be left out if their older siblings are swinging like Tarzan since the Tree Top Junior is specially designed for any child taller than 1m. If you enjoy zip wires but not wobbly obstacles high above the ground, you can try the Zip-Trekking Adventure, 7 tandem back-to-back zip wires for over 13’s. On Tuesdays in the school holidays (starting 25th July ending 29th August) there are free drop in ‘Wild Things’ sessions, 11 am – 3 pm for children. The various permanent and temporary exhibitions are also free, and you can find out what the German officers had for breakfast when Grizedale was a WWII POW camp. The National Trust’s Fell Foot Park
is a local favourite for fine weather picnics, paddling and swimming. At the moment work is underway to build a new water sports base but this only affects day boat launching which is not available this summer. The Canal Gala Returns Make a note in your diaries for the annual UCRG SUMMER GALA: Sunday, July 16th 11am - 3pm. There will be lots to do and see, including the ever popular crockery smashing! Stress-free walks Family walks in the Lakes are a great idea in theory, but the practice can involve arguments over wrong turnings and maps falling to bits in the rain. To avoid this, you can always join one of the many guided walks organised by the Lake District National Park, where an expert leader will make sure you don’t get lost. Some of the walks are hard, full day hikes for experienced walkers who can tackle Helvellyn easily, but some are designed especially for families. All you have to do is visit the website, look at the list of walks and choose the one you fancy. Walks that might appeal are the ‘Steam to the Hills’ on 3rd August, where
you will take the La’al Ratty to Eskdale Green and walk back over Muncaster Fell, the ‘Eskdale Family Wander’ (including a tour of Eskdale Mill) on 9th August, and on 12th August ‘My First Fell’, a Bowness family walk up Brantfell. The National Park asks that you wear suitable walking boots, bring food and drink and also have a warm top and waterproofs handy, since the weather can change very quickly. Open Air Theatre at Brantwood This year the ever popular touring company, Illyria, returns to Brantwood with two classic productions – Shakespeare’s “A Comedy of Errors” on Tuesday 25th July and Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Emperor’s New Clothes” on Tuesday 22nd August. The performances take place in Brantwood’s scenic lakeside meadow, and Terrace Café Chef Ben Willan will be preparing some delicious pre-theatre food for the event. Lots more ice cream at Old Hall Farm Ice cream lovers will be pleased to hear that the farm’s owner Charlotte Sharphouse has invested in a new 22 tub ice cream refrigerator for the vintage dairy. She has also been busy researching new flavours, and while firm favourites like Choc Orange Jaffa and Salted Caramel will still be on offer, this year will see new taste sensations. These will include ice creams inspired by chocolate bars and traditional desserts, as well as passionfruit, white chocolate and raspberry, blackcurrant, bubblegum and even Prosecco flavours. The ice cream is made from the farm’s herd of Jersey cows, and visitors will now be able to see all the steps from ‘cow to cone’. Local school classes have already been taken on a tour to learn about where their delicious treat comes from, and the
farm hopes to expand on this, welcoming enquiries from schools and groups.

Ulverston Victoria High School’s joint concert with the Royal Marines band proved to be hugely popular, in a brilliant night at the Coronation Hall. The concert was split into three segments, with the well renowned school band, which currently rank in the top 10 school wind bands in the country, opening the event. The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines then got a chance to showcase their unprecedented talents, before the concert concluded with a joint effort between the two. In a night which was filled with a great sense of pride, the Royal Marines band were also represented by four former Ulverston Victoria High School pupils, further epitomising what a wonderful job, Head of Music, Richard Buttler has done. Amongst those former pupils, is Ruth Tarr, who has just passed through the RM School of Music, joining the Plymouth Band as solo violinist. Tarr mesmerised the Coronation Hall with an exquisite solo of theme tune from Schindler’s List. As well as people from yesteryear providing a nostalgic feel to the night,

She graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2006 and then moved to the Czech Republic where she continued her training as a glass engraver and cutter. Peter Rath, owner of the prestigious glass company of Lobmeyr in Vienna, nurtured her skills and potential, acting as her mentor. Throughout this year Cumbria Crystal have been holding one day workshops together with Heather Gillespie introducing the craft of traditional glass cutting on a diamond lathe. The workshops can be enjoyed both by people with no experience, or for people wishing to develop their skills.

Sixth form student Anna Merrell, from Dalton, played a wonderful duet with fellow pupil and principle trumpet player David Griffiths. “I was so appreciative of being given the experience to play with the Marines Band again”, Merrell said. “Having played in Dalton Band and the various school bands, it’s such a great opportunity to experience a different kind of playing”. Merrell also admits it was a ‘nerveracking’ experience playing in front of a full hall, but one she relished. “I was extremely nervous but it was really exciting. I really enjoyed playing alongside David and the Wind Band and it makes it even more enjoyable when you play with people that are so passionate about it as well”. As well as the concert on the Saturday night, the Royal Marines put a jazz-style dance night on, the previous night. “It was amazing to be able to enjoy the dance bands on the previous night”, says Merrell. “In general, everyone had such a brilliant weekend!”

Ellie Chaney
Ellie has a wide range of artistic loves including illustration, photography, film making, animation and the ancient skill of papercutting. She creates beautiful and intricate imagery in a variety of mediums which depict nature at it’s finest but that also highlight environmental concerns in the hopes of raising awareness. Can you tell us more about how your art stimulates conversation about the issues that face us with regards to nature and the environment? I am amazed by the incredible diversity of the natural world, from the animals that we see everyday like songbirds, to deep sea creatures that some people may never have heard of. However, I don’t want to make people feel lectured, I see it more as inspiring curiosity and sharing information. For example, it’s often said we have only explored 5 - 10% of the ocean, and I just want my work to contribute towards a greater awareness of the huge variety of life that we share the planet with, because for me personally learning more about the ocean has made me value it and want to protect it.
Your papercutting art is so unbelievably detailed and must take a lot of time and concentration, does creating a piece becoming meditational for you? When they see my work people often ask me how I have the patience, but I always tell them it’s the only area of life where I’d say I have much patience at all! When I’m focusing on cutting an image out thoughts come and go, but I don’t tend to worry about things too much. I find it much easier to relax when I’m making something, and I think that’s true for lots of people. I also really enjoy the sense of fulfilment from finishing a picture that has taken 25 hours of careful progress. Saying that, it’s not always a relaxing experience - I’ve had to get a lot better at time management as papercutting really can’t be done in a rush! What do you hope to express with your creations?
I would like my work to be more engaged with environmental issues. However I am also trying to bring in an income as an artist, so I try to find the balance between creating for my own fulfilment and making things that other people will enjoy. I’m really touched when people chose my art to put in their homes and have in the background of their everyday lives. But I also like to make work that can be shared with people in an exhibition, for example with my films. It’s also really important to me that I teach and run workshops, as I always want to find ways to support people in developing their own creativity too. Do you feel that you gain a deeper connection with nature via your art?
We talk a lot about the value of art in enabling self-expression, which I think is important, but for me art has also allowed me to learn about other areas of knowledge too. I haven’t studied science since I was at school, but through my art I’ve been able to learn so much about ecology and biology. My love of drawing has also helped me to notice things and pay closer attention to them. I’ve always been drawn to natural history illustration and collect vintage nature books and field guides and this has been a big influence in my own work. Can art bring about positive change in the world?
I believe that art is a powerful means of communication, which can ask questions and open up conversation around difficult subjects without being dogmatic. Art can definitely bring people together through shared creative experiences, which I’ve seen many times when working on events like parades. I wouldn’t say I think my art is going to change the world, but I feel really lucky that I was given the support and opportunities I have been to do something I find so fulfilling, and to get to share this with others in a positive way. You have lived in Cambridge, London, Lancaster and now Ulverston. How have your surroundings influenced your output, and is it very different now that you are surrounded by nature as opposed to when you were a city dweller?
I loved being in cities because of the exhibitions and other cultural opportunities, but I always wanted to live somewhere where it was less hectic. I am so glad that I found Ulverston in 2008! For such a little town it has a vibrant arts community and so many creative people who just love to make things happen, and of course we are surrounded by such amazing landscapes. My favourite part of living here is the coastline though, it’s so beautiful and quiet compared to other parts of the country. Perhaps the biggest influence it has had on my work as an artist is that it is affordable compared to living in a city, so even though I’ve always had other jobs I’ve been able to carry on making art. Are there any mediums that you are inexperienced with but would like to engage with?

There’s something so magical about opening a flat book and having a 3D scene appear. I’m also really inspired by automata and would like to apply my papercutting skills to making small moving models….I am pretty inspired by most mediums and want to try them all I think! Where can we see some of your work or learn about some of the techniques which you employ? I’m in a shared exhibition with Lynn Hamel through Green Door Artists at Low Sizergh Barn until the 28th of June. I am also running an ‘Introduction to Papercutting’ one day workshop on the 5th of August at the Coach House, Ford Park in Ulverston.

Your Guide to Sundays in the Park this Summer Local brass bands will once again be on hand to provide first class entertainment throughout the summer months in South Cumbria. This is an exclusive guide on who is playing, at which bandstand on what weekend, so there is no excuse not to come along and listen!
Grange Bandstand: ‘Music in the Park’ is a 14 week schedule, which takes place every year on the idyllic Park Road Gardens Bandstand in Grange. The first Sunday concert took place at the end of May, and the event runs until the beginning of September. Local bands include Dalton Town Band, Ulverston Victoria High School and Ulverston Town Band. Flookburgh, Burneside and Morecambe brass bands are all scheduled to play there as well. From Coniston to the Kremlin: Arthur Ransome’s Russian Adventures The Ruskin Museum, Saturday 3 June until Sunday 3 September 2017 Arthur Ransome is best known today as the author of Swallows and Amazons, the classic children’s series. However, in his autobiography, he admits that he felt he had lived through ‘snatches of a dozen lives’. One of the most tumultuous and stirring ‘lives’ was from 1917 and 1924, when, as a young Romantic, he worked in Russia as the correspondent for the Daily News and the Manchester Guardian. The British Establishment viewed him equivocally, uncertain of his loyalties because of his intimacy with the leaders of the Russian Revolutions. A witness to the early Revolutionary days, and fluent, though self-taught, in Russian, he gained
regular access to Lenin and Trotsky. He played chess with them, chatted informally – and fell in love with Trotsky’s secretary. At the same time, he stayed in close contact with MI6. Result ? Nobody trusted him. Discover this much less familiar ‘life’ in this special exhibition which commemorates the 50th anniversary of Ransome’s death on 3 June 1967, and the Centenary of the Russian Revolutions, whose ripples are still felt across the world.

Red Squirrels

Can you imagine your county of Cumbria completely free of grey squirrels with our delightful native reds free to live and breed unfettered in our woods and gardens? Unfortunately there is only one way to achieve this and yes, it means careful and humane culling of the greys. You may think the greys are equally delightful but read on. Grey squirrels were introduced from America to the UK on about 30 different occasions from 1876 onwards. It wasn’t until 1930 that it was realised what impact they were having on our native reds and the considerable environmental damage they cause. They out-compete our reds for food and habitat and carry a squirrel pox virus to which they are immune but that is fatal to the reds. They also cause huge damage to many tree species by bark stripping, damage maize and fruit crops, take song-bird chicks and eggs, cause damage to properties and are a threat to orchards and market gardens.
If you have grey squirrels in your garden or know of areas where they are common and would like help with humane trapping and culling please make contact. I am working with the South Lakes Red Squirrel Group who are achieving a lot of success in grey eradication in parts of Cumbria and see the Furness Peninsula as a perfect location for extending this work. News from the Farm Shearing sheep is great for dry skin. The lanolin (wool grease) covers your hands and arms in a wonderfully protective moisturizing balm! We always shear the tups first because as the warm weather comes in, they have a tendency to roll on their backs to scratch their hot, itchy skin, and with a heavy fleece, can’t get back on their feet. This can kill them so if ever you see a sheep in this position, tip it back up, please. You will have saved its life! After all the tups, we shear the ‘hogs’ (last year’s lambs). They have the biggest and softest fleece as the ends are very fine, being the lamb wool and their only job for a whole year is to grow. The ewes are last to shear. Their fleeces are never as nice in quality or quantity as the hogs as they have been busy putting their energy into growing lambs and making milk. Most of our fleece goes to The British Wool Board who process the whole country’s wool, grading and sorting it and then selling it at their computerized auction room to buyers who come from around the world. We keep a small percentage back, which we send to a small mill for spinning into knitting wool. For the last month we have been incubating goose eggs. Four hatched a few days ago so we have been swooning over their cuteness. They are indoors at the moment until they are big enough not be an attractive snack for cats or crows! July is a brilliant time in the garden or allotment, it will be bursting with scrumptious edible fruit and veg if you are growing your own. If you’ve planted well, you could be picking and enjoying a massive selection of produce including kale, root vegetables, salads, chard & spinach, peas and beans, courgettes, tomatoes, herbs and soft fruit. Vigilance is required in July to stay on top of the quickly growing crops. You’ll need to pinch off the tips of the courgettes, the side shoots of tomatoes and tie up peas and beans. Make regular sowings of salads and roots and use them to intercrop so that you waste no space and crowd out the weeds. Feed your fruiting vegetables at least once a week. You can make your own high-potash feed from comfrey if you want to garden organically. Make sure you keep watering in July, especially your plants in the greenhouses and polytunnels. And of course, there is always a lot of weeding to do! It may be time to harvest the garlic.
Wait until the leaves have started turning yellow and then gently pull them from the soil. Snip off the tops at about 6 inches above the bulbs and remove the outer few layers. Turn them upside down, give them plenty of air and give them a couple of weeks to dry out. Cabbage whites will be coming out now. Keep checking for caterpillars and interplant with nasturtiums. You can also start thinking ahead to winter now, and plant out your purple sprouting broccoli, winter chard and leeks. You can enrich the soil with an all-purpose feed, top-dress with farmyard manure or turn in green manure. It’s time to lift and divide rhubarb plants and thin fruit trees now. Apples and pears thin themselves out quite naturally in June and since we did have an especially spectacular June drop this year, this is one job you might not have to do!

Unlike our native wildlife stars such as hedgehogs, otters, hares and barn owls, insects are not the most glamorous or cuddly candidates for conservation programmes. While nearly everyone appreciates beautifully coloured damsel and dragonflies, far fewer are pleased to encounter biting midges, greenfly on their roses or ants’ nests. Yet insects of all kinds are a vital part of the natural world, and unfortunately the numbers of many species have fallen over recent decades. The essential role bees play in pollinating many food crops is now well-publicised, and more gardeners are planting bee-friendly flowers. However, insects are food to many much-loved birds and bats, and
the decline in their numbers is linked to the loss of insects. Conservationists have also found out that insects are quite picky in what they need to flourish, so if you set up a reserve or protected area for certain flowers, birds or mammals, it doesn’t always mean that insects will appear. Different insects might prefer different features such as damp muddy areas, dead trees or hollow grass stems, and in general it seems that we need to use fewer insecticides and let more areas lie rough and un-manicured. I won’t complain next time I walk through a cloud of bugs by the canal because they might become a tasty supper for the summer swallows and the bats we see at dusk.

Women’s Soft Ball Cricket Festival! It’s a fun, fast and social game for all abilities. And it’s coming to a pitch near you! Women’s Soft Ball Cricket Festivals will take over this summer during the ICC Women’s World Cup. On the 9th July, South Lakes Maidens is hosting a Women’s Softball Cricket festival at Lindal Moor Cricket Club from 2pm until 6pm. It’s a family event with children’s entertainment, coaching, BBQ, music, face painting and more. Cumbria Cricket would like to encourage as many women and girls, aged 14 and up, to trial this fun form of cricket at their festivals. It is the ECB who is launching 180 Soft Ball Cricket Festivals nationally and Cumbria Cricket is working with local clubs to deliver six inspiring and action-
packed soft ball festivals across the county in July. It’s free, just register, as an individual or team, through the Cumbria Cricket website. No need to bring anything for the festival, just yourself and perhaps a few friends! All equipment is provided including a free t-shirt. There will be car parking, changing rooms, music and food. Penny Bridge CE Academy On Saturday 21st May, Penny Bridge CE Academy hosted their annual cyclocross event. This year the competition was opened up to any primary aged child from around the area and had over 110 children riding at some point over the day. In the morning the children were encouraged to complete as many laps of the course as they could in 15 minute blocks. The challenging course involved tight corners, steps, bankings and off
camber sections but was excellently ridden by all taking part. In the afternoon Penny Bridge put on 6 races by ability and were thrilled to hand out a range of prizes kindly donated by Velo Ulverston. All together prize fund totalled over £200. The children represented many schools: Penny Bridge, Leven Valley, Grange, Flookburgh, Pennington, Low Furness, Thwaites, Croftlands, Burlington, Allithwaite, Beetham, Crosthwaite and Ireleth St Peters.
It was a fantastic event for all, the children competed with enthusiasm and it was great to get people together from different
schools. The event was a team effort but Penny Bridge Academy extends special thanks to the Cooper family and Oldham family for all their support.

In many schools, the end of the summer term usually signals a relaxing time. A time to reflect and unwind after several months of hard work and exams. However, at Newton School, this next month is as busy as any that has gone before it.
“It certainly is action-packed” says Head teacher Lisa Fell. “We are proud that the school is participating in so many competitions and the fact we still have time to put on a school production shows the dedication of the staff and pupils”.

The school is also focusing heavily on physical education, with several events in July. Pupils are participating in a Rounders competition at Dowdales School; the Year 2 class are having their own mini Olympics and pupils are also taking part in the annual swimming gala at Dalton Leisure Centre.

Fell also says the school has shown great initiative after it was announced Newton was to have its own miniature carnival, organised by the school.
“It was really disappointing that Dalton carnival ended up been cancelled”, Fell said. “The children spent ages making bunting and flags and it just seemed a shame not to use them. Having our own carnival is the perfect answer”. Newton Carnival will take place on Friday 14th July, in the village square, starting at 10.30am.

Celebrating their exceptional and inspirational achievements, two local volunteers have been nominated for an award in recognition of their work with visually impaired people at the Vision Support Centre in Barrow.
Paul Backhouse and Paul Ogden, who are both visually impaired themselves, volunteer at the centre in Barrow which is the headquarter for Barrow & District Society for the Blind. The Vision Support Centre’s Chief Executive, Carl Hodge, says:

And their energy is limitless!” Paul Backhouse is the centre’s longest serving volunteer and has turned out 6 days a week for almost 40 years, assisting staff and clients at the Vision Support Centre with specialist equipment and advice. Paul Ogden has been volunteering as an Eye Clinic Liaison Officer between the hospital and the Vision Support Centre for the last 3 years and also helps to organise support groups and social events and still finds time for fundraising.

Scales Scarecrow Festival
Another successful year with our village Scarecrow Festival. The village was decked with bunting on the Wednesday, this makes people passing through investigate what is going on! Thursday evening and early Friday morning the scarecrows began to appear, by Saturday we had 50 adorning the village, the place looked amazing. Saturday, Sunday and Monday afternoon, home-made scones with jam and cream and pots and pots of tea were served on the
outside area of the village hall, even the sunshine was in attendance. Visitors, both local and from away, made the village buzz with children giggling and adults chattering as they walked the village and created a wonderful atmosphere. It is hard work for all in the village to put on such a great display but we would like to thank everyone that came along to support us. A very special thank-you to the local milkman, the cream supplier and the
local taxi company for supplying much of the provisions. Thank-you from Scales Community Association.
Swarthmoor Community Group finish on a high note
50 folk from the village came. We had food, entertainment from a magician, music and competitions. Thanks to Swarthmoor Hall Farm who donated the cream, Brocklebanks who donated the strawberries, Alan Crowe who sponsored the competitions and Pennington School who supported them with some great vegetable animals, selfies and short
stories. Thank you also to Dalton Town Band for coming and playing—they turned out in force and the music was fantastic. Everyone seemed to have a great time. Thank you to everyone who came to help and to all who supported this last of the Swarthmoor Community Groups events. Unfortunately, the group is having to stop due to falling committee member numbers.
