A Buzz from the Beehive Plans for new developments usually spark debate, and the proposal by Rawdon Property Group for a mixed-use development at the Beehive, where the Blue Light Hub is being built, is no exception. It is understood that in SLDC’s plan the land is allocated for ‘employment’, that is, businesses and/ or light industry. Rawdon Property argue that it is not economically viable to develop the site for business only, but that it would be viable if retail units were included. Under their proposal there would be two retail units, and Aldi and a Marks & Spencer Food Hall are the intended occupiers. Lake District Farmers and FETL Engineering would be the main nonretail businesses, and the

Bring out your inner Sherlock whole development would potentially generate over 200 jobs. It would probably be hard to find many people in Ulverston who wouldn’t like an Aldi and an M&S Food Hall to come to the town, or to see more jobs created. The Beehive plan should cut the number of car trips to Barrow for shopping, and would give a much wider choice locally. However, the question of how an out of town retail development would affect town centre businesses is also on some people’s minds, as is how one access road to the A590 would cope with workers at the site, shoppers,

ambulances, fire engines and police cars. Whatever the arguments for and against, it is interesting to note that a similar scheme on the edge of Dunfermline, this time with an M&S Food Hall and a Lidl, has recently been given planning permission. At a time when the major supermarket chains are being challenged, this kind of development may be the future of food retailing. If you missed the public consultation in the Coronation Hall on 5th September, you can write to HOW Planning LLP, 40 Peter St, Manchester M2 5GP or visit www.howplanning.com.

For those who like a good night out with a mystery to solve, the Dickensian Festival are hosting a fundraising Dickensian Murder Mystery cabaret dinner on Saturday November 4th at the Coronation Hall. Walling on Little Hoad

Authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority. FRN 582921

Members of the Cumbria Dry Stone Walling Association enjoyed two days of re-building the Great Wall of China on Little Hoad. The Civic Society, who organised the event, hope that they will return and continue with this huge improvement to the wall.

Plans for re-developing the Town Hall mean that Ulverston and District Age Concern will be moving from their home of 30 years on Theatre Street to the old auction room on Brogden Street. At the moment the building is being fitted out so that Age Concern can continue to offer all its services, including its popular Pop-In, in spacious and re-furbished town centre premises. A date for the move hasn’t been settled yet, but in the meantime Age Concern is open as usual.

Hair-raising fundraising at the Hope and Anchor The grand total for barman Kenny Thomas’s charity events this year is a fantastic £1,700, which will be shared between Sandside School and the Help Joe to Walk Fund. A regular says ‘If you bought a raffle ticket, threw some change in a pot, donated a prize or picked up an instrument for the cause, be very proud. And if you grew your hair, had it permed, then had it dyed green along with your beard, then had it half shaved off and walked around town for six weeks looking like a large leprechaun with alopecia, then you deserve the freedom of the town, Mr Thomas!’ The event culminated in a head shave at the Hope and Anchor.

RNLI Collection

On Saturday, 2nd September, the RNLI held a collection at Booths Superstore to raise funds for the life saving work of the Lifeboats. The collection raised a impressive total of £817.43, a significant increase on the previous year’s collection. The local Lifeboat Branch would like to give a massive thanks to all the customers who supported the collection on the day as well as to Booths Superstore for facilitating it.

What will GSK’s decision mean for Ulverston? Ulverston is lucky in that it has retained its manufacturing base from the early days of the Industrial Revolution into the twenty-first century. GlaxoSmithKline, which has operated since 1947 on the site of the large Victorian ironworks, plays an important role in this base, employing skilled workers, utilising a potentially problematic site and providing sports facilities. The formal announcement that GSK would not, after all, be building a new biopharmaceutical plant in Ulverston and suggestions that it might sell its antibiotics arm were therefore a big blow to the town. While Premier Inn had no comment to make, ‘Dalton and Ulverston Now’ asked some of Ulverston’s independent retailers and owners of small businesses for their reaction to this news. In general, none of those

asked feared that their businesses would suffer an immediate downturn. Some, including an estate agent, made the point that the health of BAE Systems in Barrow and increased tourism are also important drivers of the town’s economy. The view was that the housing market would remain stable, since Ulverston is popular with BAE employees and with those looking for a second home or a retirement property. Although a guesthouse owner and those owning rental property expected they might lose some business, since there would not be an influx of contractors building the new plant, it is the loss of a potential boost which ‘created optimism and hope for the future of the town’ , as one person said, which concerned everyone. By building a new plant, GSK might have influenced other firms to invest in Ulverston, and

the arrival of more wellpaid specialist employees could have brought other benefits beyond increased trade for local businesses. Ulverston has many unsung community activists, but there’s no denying that the pool of potential volunteers is relatively small. New arrivals might have wanted to contribute to civic life, and bring new skills to local charities and voluntary organisations. There was also some irritation over the way the works at the junction of Quebec Street and County Road, which it is assumed were brought forward in anticipation of the new plant, disrupted trade in the run-up to Christmas last year and now slow access into the town centre. Of course, traders look beyond their own businesses, and all were concerned over the future of GSK’s current employees, hoping that the site will continue to operate.

An Update from our MP

AT the time of going to press Furness MP John Woodcock was due to convene a second meeting of key players to discuss a way forward for Ulverston’s GSK pharmaceutical plant after the company’s shock decision on 20th July to cancel a £350m biopharmaceutical investment, putting hundreds of jobs at risk. The MP held talks with stakeholders in the Coronation Hall just hours after the announcement was made and a follow-up was

being organised for Friday, September 22 at the same venue. Mr Woodcock said: “I know people have been spending the summer exploring what they can do to help our community and potentially find a new buyer for the site. “This will be an important opportunity for us to share thinking and make a concrete plan for the months ahead. There is so much talent and potential in the Ulverston workforce and I’m determined to do whatever we can to give those employees the strong future they deserve and keep these prized jobs here.” Mr Woodcock is also reviving the Cumbria Better Ulverston “Bringing Communities Together” are holding their AGM on 17th October 2017 in the Ulverston Methodist Hall from 6.30 - 8pm

Guest speaker is Joe Murray QPM, a retired police officer and Chair of Cumbria Neighbourhood Watch

Connected campaign – an initiative he first launched in 2012 – to push for improvements to the Furness road and rail infrastructure. The MP said the substandard roads and railway network that serves Furness and south Cumbria would make the area less appealing to potential investors. The September 22 gathering was due to be attended by GSK management and staff, senior representatives of local authorities along with business leaders, councillors and trade union representatives. Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron was also invited to the talks. Harsh words have been spoken in a row which has blown up over plans for Ulverston Town Hall. As reported in the previous issue, SLDC intends to hand the building over to South Lakes Housing who will convert it into affordable one and twobedroomed flats. Some nearby residents, on the assumption that it will be a ‘homeless hostel’, have made perhaps ill-judged objections provoking an instant backlash. This has confused the issue for those who accept the development in principle but who may have concerns about the number of flats, the availability of parking and the appearance of the new building which will replace the current annexe with its attractive curved extension. If anyone wants to comment on the planning application, which will be heard on November 17th, they are urged to base these comments on the submitted plans.

Ulverston Community Enterprises AGM

Get the Perfect Finish in Your Home For most home owners, decorating a room is a task that they will undertake at least once in their lifetime, with the opinion that ‘it can’t be too difficult’, however, if you want your room to have a professional finish the reality is very different. Preparation is Everything

Dust sheets, masking tape and floor protectors will help you keep furniture and carpets clean and coveralls, goggles and wipes will help you stay clean too.

Over twelve months ago, South Lakeland District council transferred responsibility for the Coronation Hall and Ulverston Markets to Ulverston Community Enterprises (UCE). This is a social enterprise with a Board of volunteers which is determined to work with local people and local organisations to ensure that both the Coronation Hall and the Markets benefit the people of Ulverston and its surrounding area. Their first Annual General Meeting is on Tuesday 17th October in the Supper Room of the Coronation Hall at 7:00 p.m. and everyone is invited to come along. Cllr Judy Pickthall is the current chair of UCE, and she has given Dalton and Ulverston Now a full update of what has been going on in the past year. Everyone will probably have noticed the scaffolding covering the Coronation Hall this summer, and this is part of a process to make sure the hall continues to be the ‘jewel’ of Ulverston. Not only will it enjoy a fresh coat of paint, but windows, flashing and plaster work can be repaired and the roof inspected. The programme of gradual refurbishment of the hall has been made possible because of grants from Friends of the Coronation Hall, Townlands Trust, Sir John Fisher Trust, Ulverston Town Council and SLDC, generous donations from members of the public, and the persistence of one of UCE’s Directors, Jayne Kendall. The next step will be

making improvements inside the building itself, but the list of what needs doing could be endless. Redecorating and recarpeting the foyer and the staircases, getting new blinds and curtains, refurbishing the Supper Room, the balcony and the ante-room, upgrading the heating system and toilets, providing silencers for the doors and new sound proofing… To do all this, UCE will be seeking donations and grants, and also sponsorship so that the hall carries on being a top class community and performance venue for the whole town. However, the members of UCE are kept awake at night more by trying to make sure that what happens inside the Coro provides something for everyone. The first Annual Report will show that more people have come to the hall than before UCE took over, and that it has hosted different kinds of events. The Autumn programme should continue this trend. Members of UCE hope that all those who love the Coronation Hall and want to see it prosper will come to the AGM to hear what is going on, and most importantly to let UCE know what they would like to see. UCE will also be talking about the work under way to develop the markets. UCE is coming to the end of its time as one of the local Co-op’s local causes, and one way to support the Coronation Hall is by signing up for a membership card and nominating UCE as your preferred good cause.

Prepare any surfaces you are decorating by removing existing wallpaper, sanding and filling cracks, sanding woodwork, treating wood with knotting solution and masking off areas where a straight line is required. Thirlmere zipwire

Both sides of the lake (and the equation) Planning proposals in our area often raise the problem of how the need for jobs can be balanced with protecting the environment. We thought Ulverston now readers who visit the Lakes might be interested in the following article which first appeared in our sister paper, Windermere Now, and which highlights this issue. A company that in 2014 abandoned plans for a zipwire in the Lake District after strong local opposition is proposing setting up a similar facility elsewhere in the national park – and it has provoked strong feelings on each side of the debate. Treetop Trek faced strong local opposition in 2014 to its scheme near Glenridding, but now wants to build a 1,200m-long line across Thirlmere. The zipwire would be part of an activity hub at the lake, which would also see the setting up of an 18km (11-mile) cycle track around Thirlmere. No plans have yet been formally submitted to the Lake District National Park Authority, but Treetop Trek, which operates an adventure facility at Brockholes between Ambleside and Windermere has already held a public consultation in St John’s in the Vale and a public meeting at Swirls car park just off the A591 near where the zipwire would swing across the reservoir. The proposed hub and zipwire would be built on United Utilities. A Treetop Trek spokesman said: “This stunning part of the Lake District is not explored by the many and often bypassed by those travelling from Windermere to Keswick along the busy A591. We will attract people in all seasons to this fantastic outdoor adventure and, in doing so, help local businesses thrive. “The project will generate 28 full time equivalent jobs for the local community and our proposed community fund will help us invest back to into the local community.” Under the scheme, riders on the

zipwire would travel twice over the water from heights up to 130m above the ground, crossing the main A591 alongside the lake. Conservation charity Friends of the Lake District said it would object to the zipwire, which it described as ‘wholly inappropriate’ for the location. “Although the structure itself may have a minimal impact we consider that while in use the proposal would cause significant detrimental impacts to the landscape character and diminish the tranquillity the Thirlmere valley possesses away from the A591. We are also concerned regarding the management of visitor numbers, increasing traffic and the provision of adequate parking for commercial development in this area of the national park.” In 2013, the Lake District authority turned down plans for a zipwire at Honister, submitted by the Honister Slate Mine. The plan split opinion, with the Friends of the Lake District and two local parish councils opposing the zipwire, but Everest summiteer and Cumbria resident Sir Chris Bonington in favour. Windermere Now asked its columnist Clive Hutchby, the man currently revising Alfred Wainwright’s sevenvolume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, to gauge opinion on the plan. He said: “I posted on the major Lake District Facebook sites the famous self-portrait of Alfred Wainwright enjoying the view over Thirlmere that was included in the Raven Crag chapter in Book Three: The

Central Fells, with the line of the zipwires drawn in. The response was phenomenal, with roughly a 50:50 split between people in favour of the zipwire (usually under 30 and from Cumbria) and those against (probably older, many of them visitors). “Thirlmere as a zipwire site certainly divided opinion, but there was a lot more support for a zipwire at Honister, with many respondents who were against Thirlmere in favour.” Probably one of the most considered responses was from Rob Whythe, who wrote: ‘I’ve just re-watched the programme from 2011 about Mark Weir’s struggle to get the zip wire approved at Honister. That site was ideal for it, given the industrial heritage of the site and the fact that there used to be an aerial cableway bringing the slate down from the mountain to the work sheds. To see the planning committee struggling with it and eventually rejecting it was painful enough. But if the same committee approves these new zip wires in a situation that doesn’t have that heritage, in a valley as peaceful and quiet as Thirlmere, which currently has none of the “adrenaline junkie” attractions, it would be such a kick in the teeth to Mark’s ambitions and vision. And it would blight a quiet area beyond recovery. This cannot be a serious suggestion.’ Clive added: “This issue could run and run.” info@ulverstonnow.co.uk

ART & MUSIC

LoKi Loki the mischievous street artist, named after the shape-shifting Norse God of mischief, lies and trickery has been in action since 2014 when their very first piece, a striking black and white depiction of a human skull appeared at the old Brewery site in Ulverston. This overnight manifestation led to much debate as to who the artist was and whether their piece was creative or potentially criminal. The skull was eventually removed by the owner of the building who was not a fan, but what followed were many more of the artist’s specialty monochrome style paintings on board which were attached to a multitude of buildings throughout town. September 2015, Loki is back and they’ve been busy, sculpting the now famous life size plaster cast figures, positioned in various poses on the Tank Square roundabout to the surprise and delight of Furness residents. In this case it seems that “our” Loki took the form of some kind of nocturnal ninja or arty artful dodger with the ability to

12

magic a multitude of moulded mannequins onto a mound without even a single sighting. Quite a feat. The installation proved a massive hit with locals, garnering acclaim from all walks of life, then some of the characters were vandalised, causing uproar among the ranks of Loki’s new found fandom, others were removed and then things became relatively quiet on the Loki front in 2016. “Back by popular indifference.” Loki announces their return on Facebook in the early hours of August 10th, they have just completed a massive twilight drop of new characters, marking the beginning of the busiest period in their brief history. A flurry of activity by the artist sees statues back upon Ulverston’s main roundabout, at the Hoad

- NEXT DEADLINE 27 OCTOBER 2017 th

Monument, Lightburn Park, Birkrigg Common and for the first time, pieces appear outside of their traditional stomping ground, at the Bluebird Cafe in Coniston, Claife Heights by Windermere, upon the Glebe in Bowness and at the duck pond in Grange. The subject matter became political with the begging banker outside Lloyds in Ulverston wearing a sign saying “Banker needing pool for 4th home, please give generously.” The response to Loki has not always been totally welcoming and as with any art, feedback is divided. What to some is trash is to others gleaming monochromatic treasure. However, there has been almost universal praise with residents of other towns requesting that they “need some Loki in their lives.” Loki’s charitable manoeuvres such as the donation of a custom piece to St Mary’s, raising over £1000 for the hospice has only served to enhance their reputation in the public eye. This quote seems to sum up the general feeling towards the artist/s, “I love living in Ulverston... it’s quirky, creative, and full of idiosyncrasies and surprises... and I think Loki is the embodiment of all of this.” Here’s what Loki had to say when we fired a few questions their way… Whilst your work is more street art than it is graffiti, obvious parallels can be drawn, I was going to begin with a quote by 3D from Massive attack, “They want to do something all for you, but for everyone else, do you see what I mean? It doesn’t make sense does it? Graffiti doesn’t make sense, I don’t think anyone can make sense out of graffiti cos it’s got so many different values and aspects, it’s not plain and simple, it’s crime and it’s art...” Can you relate to this quote? Despite never having been to art college or University I like

to think that I can relate to any pretentious art quotes. Do you find it at all amusing that the vandalism inflicted upon your art has caused such uproar and stirred up such anger and heavy criticism in some people when your work and street art in general is seen by others as a blight on the landscape or indeed vandalism itself? Yes....yes I do. Art is what you can get away with. Andy Warhol. Is it important to you to just go out and do it rather than to seek permission? The trouble with asking permission is the possibility you might get “yes, please do” for an answer What is your aim, why do you do what you do? Is the potential of causing controversy and debate an important part of your art? Well, I do it because I walk around Cumbria and see all this beauty, the scenery, lakes, mountains, trees, the stunning old buildings and architecture, it really takes your breath away and I think to myself.....nature isn’t doing enough, this will look much better with a plaster figure in the way or a painting on a bit of 8 by 4. Do you hope that the impact of your work inspires others to “just go out and do it” and to utilise everyday public spaces as their galleries? hahaha no of course not, imagine how bad most of it would look Read the full article at www.ulverstonnow.co.uk

New festival comes to Ulverston A group of local artists, illustrators and writers, Lakes Illustration Collective, are teaming up to bring the first Lakes Illustration Festival to Cumbria from 25th – 29th October 2017. With a two day illustration fair, a book launch and a series of satellite exhibitions and events, this promises to be an inspiring showcase of illustrative talent in the lakes and beyond. Bringing

together illustration enthusiasts, families and artists alike, this will be an exciting new addition to Ulverston’s vibrant festival community. A View Of The World

The Roxy Ulverston Film Club is now into its new season with a selection of world cinema to counterbalance the Hollywood offerings. There are nine films to go in the season which lasts till June next year. Julieta, showing on Thursday

October 12th is the latest from acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodovar and is a tender melodrama based on three Alice Munro short stories. “Having been swept along by Almodovar’s vision, I felt that silence deserved to be broken by tumultuous applause,” declared popular film critic Mark Kermode. The November choice, on the 9th is Things To Come. Not the H.G. Wells adaptation, but a French story of a passionate middle-aged philosophy professor, played by Isabelle Huppert, who rethinks her already much-

examined life after an unforeseen divorce. The season continues with Paterson (USA), The Salesman (Iran), The Red Turtle (France/ Belgium), The Eagle Huntress (Mongolia), Certain Women (USA), The other Side of Hope (Finland) and A Fantastic Woman (Spain). Membership of the Club is £6 (concessions £5) which entitles admission to the films at £5, (which would otherwise be £6) and gives a 50p discount to other films at the Roxy. The Film Club showings are on the third Thursday of the month at 8.00.

October at Brantwood welcomes in an exciting mix of courses and evening programme. On 20th, Lincoln Rowe will talk in the Loft about his experiences as an expedition artist, a pre-talk dinner is available. On the 25th, pianist Martin Roscoe will be performing in the Drawing Room, the evening twilight over the Lake providing the perfect backdrop, pre-concert dinner is available. Ulverston poet, Geraldine Green will be leading the November open mic night with supper on the 2nd November, an event proven to be lively and cosy in our refurbished restaurant. For those wishing to have some time or guidance in creative endeavours, our glass fusing workshop and various art workshops in October, will help guide and hone all levels of skill. in Manchester, bringing all scenes and musical styles together with their inclusive parties between 2003 - 2008, the underground dance collective moved back to their homeland of Ulverston and brought the crowds and the vibes with them! A succession of sell out shows ensued as the night transitioned from a monthly offering to a massive annual treat, the reduction in frequency allowing time to promote the event extensively and throw all

efforts and energies into creating a spectacular backdrop to the proceedings. The last couple of years have seen Monster team up with local legends HomeGrown DJs to bring some of the biggest names on the scene to Ulverston, including Utah Saints, The Mouse Outfit, Ed Solo and festival favourites Slamboree at last year’s seasonal shindig. This Halloween sees the team bring Phibes to the hall, an act who have clocked up over 1.5 million plays on

Breakdancing skeletons, hula hooping vampires, corpse bride dancers and stilt walking beasts, alongside giant speaker stacks, eye popping decor, brain melting visuals and heavy, hellish beats. These are the ingredients of a truly spectacular Halloween Rave-Fest and the kind of recipe that Monster Monster has been cooking up for the last 14 years. After building a loyal following

Soundcloud, almost 17K Facebook fans and who have rocked some of the biggest stages at the world’s most renowned festivals such as Wonderfields, Boomtown and Glastonbury. This will be their only appearance in Cumbria and will provide a chance to hear some of their explosive new material which is getting support from the likes of Utah saints, DJ Phantasy, Freestylers, Skepsis, Darkzy, Featurecast and Ed Solo. The boys have just completed a successful tour of Canada with several heavyweights of the scene and are hungry to get back to smashing the UK’s club scene good and proper.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

Fran Riley Fran Riley is an Ulverston based artist, workshop leader, therapist, and explorer. Her travels inspire much of her work as can be seen in her current exhibition, “Fragments of a Greater Whole” which is currently running at Natterjacks Coffee House. What can we expect of your exhibition? It features an eclectic mix of subject matter and materials. I love experimenting and exploring different ideas and mediums and this exhibition shows my most recent adventures. I’ve been making little sculptures out of natural and found organic shapes. On my travels to Cambodian

temples, I got very inspired by how natural shapes work around man made ones. Tell us more about your journeys and how they have inspired your work Sappho was an Ancient Greek poet who I discovered on my recent adventure to Lesvos. “Sappho’s Girdle” is the title of a textile/ paper piece I made. It started as an idea for a book but I hung it up to work on and thought it looked better, and it looks like a scrappy garment. Working in textiles is a new one for me, but it seemed to best represent the idea of fragments. Only one of Sappho’s poems survives intact and I became intrigued by how snatches of words and stories can survive through time. What are some of your preferred methods used to channel your creativity? I’m a medium magpie! Mosaic, photography, sculpture, painting, encaustic... but I have always had at least one sketchbook on the go since I was 19. So I reckon my favourite medium is journaling. Much of my work is multilayered, suggesting a story or visual poem. I have included some encaustic work, layering under wax, and really like the slightly fuzzy submerged effect.

We had the pleasure of visiting your home a couple of years ago and it was stunning, almost an art gallery as well as a regular living space. Was it a conscious decision to make it so? Thank you! Yes, I realised when I was living in London that a living environment can be colourful and inspiring too. I set to work on our house in The Gill to make spaces that make people smile. The mosaic in the bathroom was a leap of imaginative faith as I hadn’t really done any mosaic before. I think that is my creative credo, think up an idea and find a way to make it happen.

Natterjacks, what’s all that about? Natterjacks is a nighttime coffee house, and art gallery, located in the centre of Ulverston. Its owners, Valerie Madden and Rob O’Hara, converted the downstairs area of Sefton House into Natterjacks nearly seven years ago, and have welcomed many people into the coffee house since that time. The cakes are all fresh, home-made, using organic ingredients, and

delicious! The coffee comes from Atkinsons Coffee Roasters, in Lancaster, and the bottled beer comes from our local breweries. The art gallery started through Valerie’s work with Printfest, and has grown enormously, since the first exhibition, five years ago. There is no charge for holding an exhibition, and the commission rate is comparatively low.

What does your workspace look like? My workspace is chaos! I’m very lucky to be surrounded by a treasure trove of materials and I get carried away making things. It’s a good job I have regular workshops and I’m forced to tame my table often. On the subject of your workshops, are we able to enjoy any of the work created by the participants? Yes, in this show I’m especially proud to include work from my talented workshop participants. I run two workshops a week from my studio at home. It’s a great space to experiment, gain confidence and have nice cup of tea! Many people find their creativity gets squashed out by the demands of life and this is a great opportunity to carve out one and a half hours of blissful creativity. One Saturday a month I also run a themed day workshop which focuses on a particular theme or technique. No experience is needed, just come and have a go! You can check out “Fragments of a Greater Whole” at Natterjacks on Queen Street until 17th October (open from 3-10pm Monday to Friday.) To find out more about workshops with Fran you can contact her direct on 0750 343 1825.

As well as meeting for a place to chat (or Natter!!), Natterjacks also hosts a number of events, including music evenings, knit and natter, book clubs, French classes and Ukulele events. Valerie and Rob are hoping that many more local groups, and clubs, decide to hold their meetings and events at their venue. Everyone is welcome!

Fear of the Dark! As the nights draw in and Halloween approaches, we thought it would be a good time to look at spooky stories from Ulverston and around. While historical tales were recounted with relish, we were asked not to print some very strange more recent happenings for fear of frightening new homeowners. Here are the tales from locals who were happy to share their bumps in the night...

Mystery poisoning awakens tactile spook? Behind the Hope and Anchor’s front window lies a treasure chest of tales about the ghostly goings on inside. When Joanne and Dave took over in 2010, unexplained events started happening. Several locals witnessed the whiskey tumbler which flew off the top shelf, span in mid- air and smashed on the floor and the pen which flew out of its holder across the room. On another occasion, without anyone touching it, a framed picture fell from the position it had not moved from in years, right onto the head of a seated customer beneath, complete with wall fixing and hanging wire. But even more inexplicable, an unopened bottle of Champagne flew off the shelf

The home sick lantern of Plumpton Hall

behind the bar, across the right shoulder of one of the bar staff, across the front of his body and landed on the first step of the wooden ladder that leads down to the cellar. It landed on its cork and remained upright and still until Joanne picked it up and placed it back on the shelf. Not a drop of Champagne was spilt. Dave, Joe and a number of customers on separate occasions have experienced “someone” shoving them, tapping them on the shoulder or barging past them, but when they have turned, no one was there or could have moved away in the time it took them to turn. The bizarre experiences are not confined to the bar. One night Joe

Plumpton Hall, on the shore of the Leven estuary, is one of the oldest domestic buildings near Ulverston. Not surprisingly, there are numerous mysterious tales associated with it. One of its main features is a large brass lantern, of unknown origin, hanging from the main stairwell. The lit lantern was hung in the hall to act as a guide to travellers crossing the sands. Legend has it that the lantern will never leave the house. Various attempts have apparently been made to remove it, including once when it was put in a barrel and thrown out to sea. But it is

was woken in the accommodation upstairs by four slow loud bangs as if someone was slapping the table beside her. She woke Dave. The bangs sounded again. But this time they both heard them. Closer investigation revealed noone was there. All these inexplicable incidents happened more frequently in the first two years of them moving in but still occur from time to time today. “They aren’t sinister,” Joe explained. “We knew about them before we moved in and we are not frightened by them. They just happen.” Legend has it that in the late 1700s a former proprietor, Mr Neale, died on the premises. The inquest was held in the tap

always rediscovered, hanging in its usual place the next morning!

Although some considered it of Moorish origin washed ashore from the wreck of a ship of the Spanish Armada or having been brought back from the Crusades, an “Antiques Roadshow” expert thought the lantern was of Portuguese origin and of much more recent date than either the Crusades or the Spanish Armada! However, he didn’t comment about the lantern’s behaviour. Other haunted happenings at the Hall include several sightings of an old crone in

room at the back of the Hope and Anchor pub. The verdict was he had been poisoned with arsenic. Could it have been suicide and his unsettled soul still roams the rooms to make his presence felt?

the woods and the quarry, a ghostly horseman galloping across the sands before disappearing and occasional mention of bloodstained footprints. Another tale is of a sailor who was shipwrecked with his wife and child and became separated from them. The wife and child were given shelter in the Hall. When the sailor eventually reached the hall he looked through the window and thought his wife and child were ghosts. His hair turned white. He returns, white haired each year on October 29th to gaze through the window at his loved ones by the fireside.

The tea trolley phantom Many other old buildings are associated with strange happenings, and a reader sent in this story: I worked as a staff nurse in a nursing home owned by nuns. The house was very old, and at one point had been used as a children’s home. I mainly worked night duty, along with two care assistants. When we weren’t seeing to the patient’s needs, we kept each other awake during the night with various stories, including, some nights, spooky tales of our experiences. This did nothing to encourage us to walk along dark corridors alone at 4 am, so we usually did our ‘rounds’ in twos. The home was filled with elderly, very frail ladies, and it was not unusual to spend the night closely watching a patient who did not have long to live. Often, these patients would become very talkative in the hours before they died, recalling memories or calling out people’s names. On many occasions a patient would call out and ask us to take away all the children crowding around their bed- it was as if the children’s spirits had come to help them across to the other side. One night I went to answer a bell from a patient’s room, but had to go alone as the other staff were busy. The corridor was dimly lit by a night light, and there was a trolley in the middle of the passageway- not the usual place to leave an empty tea trolley. There was nobody else in the corridor, but I could hear footsteps on the wooden floor. Below the trolley I saw a movement and looking closer I could see a pair of black lace-up boots below a long dark skirt. I looked up, expecting to see one of the nuns who had maybe been unable to sleep, but above the trolley there was absolutely nothing.

Enter If You Dare the 9th Candlelit Walk

‘Halloween should offer more treat than tricks and what better way to mark the passing of the seasons than with fire - laugh in the face of the night as it closes in for winter’. 500 candles will be filling the woods around Ford Park this Halloween as Ulverston’s Candlelit Walk returns on Tuesday October 31st from 6.00 until 8.30 pm. The path beyond the playground will be lit by scented candles and flaming flares thanks once again to donations of scrap wax from Lindal’s Wax Lyrical and the labours of the Candlelit Walk volunteers who’ve been picking wax off their fingers for months. However, this magical celebration of Halloween is not just a pretty sight, and, not to give too much away, this year’s spooky shenanigans embraces the theme The Third Eye. What eyeballs, big and small, will be peeping at you from the trees? And will you be brave enough to join in the Brains Banquet, or watch the spinechilling film which accompanies it? As well as these strange and mystical sights, there’ll also be the sounds of music with Don’t Tell Suzy, Martin Gilbert will be back on the story terrace above the cafe and there will be a fortune teller this year too! If you have grown and carved a pumpkin, bring it along to show off your creation in the Pumpkin Patch. Fancy dress is welcome, but the organisers stress, ‘as Madonna and

The Incredibles know, NO CAPES or inflammable costumes’. Whatever the weather holds, the entertainments will go ahead, although rain could put out some of the candles later on.

The event is free, with donations buckets so we can get spooked again next year, and the organisers would like to thank the Sir John Fisher Foundation for their grant which has supported more artists and acts this year.

If anyone would like to come and join the crafting for this year’s event there’s a workshop on October 15 at the Red Rose Club, 2-5pm . Come and snip some peepy eyes to add to the community shadowscreen or or have a go at glass painting to create some eye baubles and jar lights for the trees. All ages welcome though younger ones will need your help with the cutting.

Trust me

By: Zosia Wand

Local author and playwright Zosia Wand is celebrating the release of her first novel, ‘Trust Me’, published by ‘Head of Zeus’, with two events in Ulverston. Set in a fictionalised version of the town, the novel will have special appeal to fans of dark women’s fiction and the recent wave of GripLit, the psychological thriller genre. The plot, which focuses on a young stepmother’s relationship with her teenage stepson, is absorbing, suspenseful and thought-provoking. When

her stepson becomes sullen and withdrawn, Lizzie starts to suspect that something sinister is going on at school. But nobody believes her – and then suspicion falls on Lizzie herself... Early reviews are all 5 star, and describe it as an unputdownable “brilliant, gripping thriller” which is “full of tension, but also full of heart” with strong characters, and a twisting, turning plot line. Although the official release date is October 5th, Zosia is giving us a sneak preview of the hardback version with

Fans of reclusive South Cumbrian writer Naomi Hudson will be delighted at the appearance of her new novel, ‘Snow Maiden’.

Fun-filled Book Launch! Parents can browse the messy and outdoor playwear from Kidunk and other local designers, and maybe be persuaded to buy a play tepee from the Craft Workshop. The day runs from 10 am until 4 pm, and costs £8 a child (accompanied). Amy Stretch-Parker has also set up ‘A Spark in

an event in Ulverston Library on October 4th at 7 pm when she will read from the novel and answer questions. (Booking essential, £1 incl refreshments). On Friday 13th October she is hosting a party at the Laurel and Hardy Museum for anyone in Ulverston who would like to celebrate with her. As she says, “The book is dedicated to the community of Ulverston, so it seems right to celebrate with the community.” There will be a licensed bar and disco and everyone is welcome.

The Ruskin Museum in Coniston is hosting an exhibition of paintings by the Ravenstonedale artist David William Morris. The show’s title--‘Along the lane, across the dale…’ gives a clue to the nature of David’s paintings which gather inspiration from landscape subjects within a 5 mile radius of the south-east Cumbrian village of Ravenstonedale . NATURE & WILDLIFE

Meet Darwin and his friends Darwin, the little eider chick, is the diminutive hero of The Eiderling, an engaging new family story trail all about South Walney Nature Reserve. The easy-to-follow interactive trail is 5km long (including a short cut if little legs are getting tired!). It is available free of charge to all visitors at South Walney Nature Reserve. Children visiting South Walney can now borrow a new Wildlife Watcher backpack too, complete with mini binoculars, a spotter sheet to record the wildlife they see along the way, a bug collecting pot, note book and pencil. It’s the ideal way to keep them occupied, as they see where Darwin’s adventures take him! The tale trail and backpacks have been generously funded by Cumbria County Council. crab apples and sweet chestnuts. Edible fungi also figure on his list. Most of us rightly approach picking mushrooms to eat with caution, since only an expert can tell the difference between some edible species and similar fungi which are deadly poisonous. I once turned down the offer of some deliciouslooking mushroom since, wrongly as it turned out, I wasn’t sure the gatherers knew what they were doing. October is a good month for fungi, and the many varieties we see are only the fruiting bodies of these fascinating organisms which are classed as neither plants nor animals. Fungi are made up of minute individual threads which form a dense structure in the soil or in different

species of tree. Some fungi have a symbiotic relationship with certain trees: the trees support them and in turn they break down organic matter and enable the trees to take up nutrients. Others, by living off dead leaves, other plant material and wood and animal remains prevent nature from drowning in its own waste. Although many species of fungi have become endangered, this is probably more because of habitat loss and pollution than a result of overpicking by foragers. Picking fungi doesn’t affect the main hidden part of these organisms, and in fact might help them by spreading their spores, so if you know what you are doing, October can provide you with a tasty free alternative to shop-bought mushrooms.

October is always associated with squirrels hoarding nuts and with animals which hibernate fattening up ready for the winter. The writer John LewisStempel tried to live for a year only on wild food foraged from his small farm, and for October he gives a long list of what was available, including elderberries, haws, hazelnuts, sloes, rosehips,

CAUTION! Some mushrooms and Funghi are extremely posionous. Take a guide or at least a guide book, and if you’re not sure, then leave well alone. Ed 22

Foulshaw Osprey Spotted Sunbathing in Spain!

- NEXT DEADLINE 27 OCTOBER 2017 th

Cumbria Wildlife Trust have issued the exciting news that a keen-eyed photographer has recently spotted one of the South Lakeland ospreys in northern Spain, at the start of her epic migration from Cumbria to West Africa. Wildlife film-maker and photography enthusiast Alberto Benito Ruiz captured three wonderful images of Blue 35 at the Aguilar de Campoo reservoir in northern Spain, between León and Bilbao. She was identified by the coloured ring on her leg. Blue 35 is one of the pair of breeding ospreys that has nested at Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve near Witherslack every year since 2014. Alberto Benito Ruiz has also posted some dramatic video footage of Blue 35 on YouTube, showing the osprey eating a recently-caught fish. Watch the video here: wtru.st/spain-osprey The Foulshaw Moss ospreys, including this year’s brood of three chicks, have all now left the nest near Witherslack to embark on their arduous 3,000 mile migration south. You can sign up to osprey e-news to be among the first to hear when the Foulshaw ospreys return in spring 2018 on Cumbria Wildlife Trust’s website.

Ulverston Mind Highly Commended Congratulations to Ulverston Mind who have won a ‘Highly Commended’ award in the Charter Gardening Competition for their allotment on the Ellers site.

October in the Kitchen Garden

As autumn approaches, vegetable gardeners tend to be taking stock of what has done well, harvesting and beginning to tidy up for the winter. Most vegetable gardening books give lists of what should be done each month, and now we could be sowing spring lettuce in cold frames, planting out spring-hearting cabbage and picking beetroot, some cabbage varieties, autumnheading cauliflowers, squashes, marrows and pumpkins, the first leeks and parsnips if they are big enough, carrots, swedes and swiss chard. These lists sometimes appear a bit optimistic. Every year, even if you follow the same routines, some vegetables do better than others, and there can be no obvious rhyme or reason to it. Last year, for example, our carrots refused to germinate, peas were munched by pea weevils and beetroot stayed the size of marbles for weeks. This year, the carrots germinated perfectly, pea weevils were hardly in evidence and beetroot grew like a dream.

At the same time, our favourite variety of dwarf french bean germinated badly, while other varieties were unaffected, and potatoes were attacked by blight relatively early. One could put this down to subtle changes in the weather from year to year, except that what fails in your garden can be flourishing in someone else’s and vice versa. When reading gardening books we also have to remember that here in the north we can be a bit behind the south in terms of plant growth, and we shouldn’t be downhearted if Monty Don is harvesting his peas when ours are barely flowering. On the other hand, when we had a lovely Indian summer two years ago, he was telling us to clear away our sweetcorn plants when we were still enjoying juicy cobs. It all goes to show that for most people, growing vegetables and herbs is not an exact science, and every year brings new challenges.

Ford Park Apple Day

By this time of year, those who have apple trees sometimes find they can’t use or give away all their apples, especially if they have limited storage space. As a change from apple crumble, take along your apples and some clean bottles to Ford Park Apple Day on Saturday October 7th. You can have your apples pressed into your very own juice, and then enjoy the music, stalls and other attractions. The day runs from 11.00 am until 4.00 pm, and entry is free.

Jayne Peel opened her shop on Union Street in Ulverston last November and has had an amazing response to her cakes, making 100’s of bespoke cakes already. She explains “I have a few styles that I can personalize with colours and text but I also make character cakes where my customer will describe the person the cake is for and I then get to create a cake that personifies them. I love hearing people’s descriptions of their loved ones, I’m amazed at how often bare bottoms come up in their descriptions and I am becoming quite adept at modelling bum cheeks out of fondant.” She has also held a few workshops teaching people how to decorate cakes and model with fondant. Since the space she has is small she keeps numbers low which

A message from UCE about the Markets Ulverston Market Charter has been in place since 1280 and here at Ulverston Community Enterprises we’re working hard to promote our market town and bring traders to our cobbled streets. Recently anyone visiting Ulverston market days – Thursday and Saturday - will have seen all the hard work paying off with more stalls. This has led to more footfall to Ulverston. We’re continuing to spruce up our Market Hall with

new signs and sound system, which will complement the free Wi-Fi and new traders, like our sparkly hairdressers Platinum Hair Studio! We’ll continue to improve our markets by keeping our streets open to new traders, develop specialist markets and hold a competition to paint the Market Hall shutters with two beautiful murals.

We’d love you to keep supporting us, so keep shopping local and if you would like a stall get in touch on 01229 588994.

CLUBS & SOCIETIES

Could you coach a future Lion?

If it’s not fun, it’s not Scottish Country Dancing

Dalton JFC based in Dalton in Furness is looking to expand its age groups, but we need volunteers to enable us to do so. We have squads of ages up to U11’s and are also looking for people to take future U6 squads for training and then games as they turn 6. Training is Tuesday evenings and / or Sunday mornings (times flexible) and games Saturday mornings. Coaches should be energetic, enthusiastic, organised and have a great manner with the kids.

Scottish Country Dancing is all about having fun but it also provides proven medical benefits through mental and physical agility with likeminded people in a friendly environment. You’re never too young and you’re never too old – just come along and enjoy yourself! The Furness Scottish Country Dance Group, formerly the Barrow Scottish Country Dance Group was founded almost sixty years ago and is a Royal Scottish Country Dance Society Affiliated Group. The Group runs a weekly class, under the leadership of Eve Ritchie, a RSCDS qualified teacher and is open to all grades, from beginner to experienced. Eve is determined to turn all of us into good Scottish Country Dancers but she is even more determined to ensure that we have lots of fun, even if we never climb to the giddy heights of her expectations! The class runs from September till December and from January until April. It is held in Newton Village Hall from 7.30 pm till 9.30 pm (beginners welcome to attend from 7.00pm). Cost of membership is £3 per year and the class costs £2 per session. You don’t have to have done any Scottish dancing previously nor do you have to be Scottish and you don’t need to come with a partner. The Group also runs monthly informal dances during the summer and the Furness Fling, an annual dance in November. For further information please phone 01229 584066

Inner wheel club of Ulverston The Inner Wheel Club of Ulverston held its first meeting of the year on 25th July, under the leadership of President Irene Jackson who introduced John Walker, a Blood Biker and Deputy Northern Area Manager. The Blood Bikes movement began in the London area in 1962. In May of 2012 four men, each with his own bike, decided to begin the same work in the North West. There are now 150 riders in the northern area and they are trained in emergency response,

between 7.00 am and 10.00 pm, the Blood Bikes operate between 7.00 pm and 2.00 am. In the case of long distance assignments help has been provided to deliver to Speke, Leeds and other hospitals further south in Lancashire when a relay of bikes has covered the longer journeys. They have had over 37,000 call-outs since day one and have now been awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for Voluntary Service. President Irene presented John with a cheque for Blood Bikes.

The programme for October 26 will include: Knock, Nock, Who’s There? It’s the Allure of McClure: Pianist Mike Nock and bassist Ron McClure were two distinctive participants in the celebrated but sadly but short-lived Naxos Jazz Series. The Vanguard Story, Part 2: Another great jazz label, which defined the term Mainstream Jazz in the 1950s. Jerome Kern +Jazz+6: An equation which adds up to a clutch of inspired jazz interpretations of some rightly beloved melodies. 7pm Bardsea Malt Kiln.

SCHOOLS

Ulverston school governing board scoops national award for outstanding practice Congratulations to the governing board of Sir John Barrow School in Ulverston for being named as one of the winners in the outstanding governance in a single school category at the National Governance Association’s (NGA) Outstanding Governance Awards 2017 on Tuesday 5 September. The category recognises governing bodies that have improved significantly over time and in doing so have made specific impacts on their school and its pupils. They were among twelve governing boards and five clerks who received awards presented by Lord Nash (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the School System) to recognise the unique and inspiring contribution that school governors, trustees and clerks make every single day in schools

around the country.

Announcing Sir John Barrow School as of one three category winners, judges Duncan Haworth and Siddique Hussain described the governing board as “demonstrating excellent interaction with school pupils, parents and staff” and praised its engagement with

stakeholders. Judges also commended the “strong set” of governors as shaping the long-term strategy of the school “with a hardworking and thorough approach to governance.” The school has also set up and runs a local chairs’ cluster, operating across a network of 15 local primary schools.

UVHS GCSE and A’LEVEL Results 2017 UVHS staff and students are delighted with the 2017 GCSE and A’Level results. Headteacher Denis Fay said “I would personally like to congratulate all the students in all the FEC schools who have been successful in their results. Cumbrian schools are proud to serve our children, their families and the communities they come from.” Head of School, Matthew Hardwick, added; “Our students, the children of our wonderful county and schools are also more than the sum of their grades and so we want to celebrate the individuals who have shone for all sorts of reasons. The results are a reflection of the immense dedication, commitment and sheer hard work that has been put in by both the students and staff of our fantastic school, as well as the phenomenal

support of our parental body. It is also always important to remember that schools should not be ‘results factories’ and we have endeavoured to prepare each and every one of our students as much as possible for their future lives . We wish them all the very best of luck in their chosen paths as they continue to create their own life stories.” A very satisfying 77% of all Year 13 students have been immediately accepted into their first choice universities with several other offers pending. Students have also secured an unprecedented 100% success rate for medicine and veterinary applications, with all 4 medics and both vets securing places to study at university. Quite a few students have also qualified to take up highly sought after Higher

Apprenticeship Schemes including positions at BAE, JF Hornby, Forge Europa and, in the case of Alex Wilkerson (2 A*, 1C), Ernst & Young.

Head of Sixth Form Rob RASTELLI said “It has been an absolute privilege and pleasure working with this year group. With the commitment, dedication and sheer hard work that they have put into their time at UVHS, both inside and outside the classroom, they fully deserve to have achieved such outstanding results. They will be sorely missed. I will certainly continue to wear my Class of 2017 sixth form leavers’ hoodie (that they presented to me as a farewell present) with a real feeling of pride around the streets of Ulverston and beyond!”

Premier League Trophy to Visit Dalton Primary Dalton St Mary’s Primary School is one of only 10 across the country which will have a visit from the official Premier League Trophy. Pupils will have a chance to see the impressive cup on Thursday 19th October. Teachers had registered the school and were entered into a draw, with physical education a key theme for the days, as the trophy is used as an opportunity to inspire pupils. The visit is indicative of the hectic schedule the school has had since returning from the summer holidays. On Friday 29th September, the school hosted a MacMillan Coffee morning in the school, and have also been busy organising a Harvest Festival and a bake off competition.

New-look Newton start as they mean to go on

After a busy summer holiday, which has seen the entire school revamped after continuous building work, a jam-packed calendar ensures its full steam ahead straight away. “It’s wonderful to be organised and tidy again, but there’s no time for reflection, we have so much going on”, says head-teacher Lisa Fell. Pupils from years 3-6 are visiting Low Sizergh Farm, near Kendal, as part of a Chef on the Farm project. Chef James Holden and Farming and Countryside Education are working together to promote cooking, using fresh ingredients and linking where it is produced to the plate, and children will be taught basic cookery skills Pupils from nursery and reception class will also have the chance to dress up for Halloween on the 31st October. As well as numerous fun activities throughout the day, there is a disco after school for the other years on 2nd November.
