Happy Easter to you and Happy Birthday to us! This issue is our first anniversary. It is hard to believe that only 12 months ago we nervously sent our first issue to print. So much energy and effort goes into each issue and many people across the community are actively involved. One year in and the paper is certainly gathering momentum. A huge number of reports now come in from all areas of the community, and long may it continue. This is after all a real community newspaper dedicated to the people who live and work in Dalton and Ulverston. One of our writers, Pip Woon would like to thank all those who helped her to raise money for Breast Cancer Care. By simply participating in ‘Dry January’ and then making a rash promise to continue into February if the target was reached, a unique charity has benefitted by £1050. Eagle eyed readers of our piece about Trudi Dewar’s 10 marathons in 10 days challenge will have spotted that she’s NOT completed the Lakesman’s Challenge. In fact, with just one official marathon under her belt, it makes her 10 in 10 even more of an epic undertaking. We will catch up with Trudi in our May issue, as her challenge starts, to discover why this Brathay 10 in10 challenger is stepping into the limelight. After Easter we are looking forward to Ulverston Flag Fortnight, celebrating the arrival of spring and Ulverston WalkFest, now in it’s 18th year. Happy walking!

For over thirty years the National Trust has cared for Sandscale Haws National Nature Reserve (locally known as Roanhead) and welcomed many thousands of people to enjoy its beautiful beach, stunning views and amazing wildlife. From coralroot orchids to curlews and great crested newts, there’s enough here to keep the keen naturalist occupied. Sandscale is also home to one of the largest remaining Natterjack Toad populations in the UK. This unique amphibian is well known for the extraordinary chorus of the male toads during the breeding season when the loud rasping calls can be heard up to a mile away on a still night. Numbers of this species declined dramatically during the 20th Century and populations at many sites went extinct over this period. The declines were pre-dominately attributed to habitat loss and today there is an

National Trust has been working on a new car park and welcome hut at Sandscale Haws. The Nature Reserve car park is due to open again soon. “Living Mindfully in our Relationships”

Two longstanding members of the Ulverston diving club “Frail Pool” have discovered a remarkable relic in the deepest part of the UK’s shortest canal. Mr Ap Ril, originally from Lisbon, recognised the glinting in the murky depths immediately, a lamp from a Portuguese Man o’War. “It has a legend that is unmistakable and renowned worldwide,” he explained. “For centuries people have known about the story behind this ship’s lamp but it is rare to actually find one.” Mr Phy Salia, the club’s director, also commented, “We were just finning around the bottom of the canal when we noticed something shining from beneath the sediment. I am delighted to find something so unusual. It probably floated in on the tide during World War Two before the lock gates were closed. To be honest, I was a little disappointed that its flame was no longer burning. Burning lamps are worth a fortune.” The lamp has been retrieved from the canal and will be on display in the Coronation Hall in the near future.

Fabulous Flags & Bunting in Dalton Planning for Dalton Carnival on June 10th is well underway. The programme has been put together, adverts sold, trade stands booked and entries accepted for this year’s Carnival Royalty to follow in the footsteps of last year’s Carnival Queen Grace Milner. The Dalton Carnival committee has additionally been working hard on the management planning, and road closures for the parade route are being finalised with the authorities. This year’s parade starts from Prince Street at 1pm. Carnival Chairman Neil McDougall said; “Very soon we will have done as much work as we can and then it’s over to the town. This year’s theme is ‘flags and bunting’ and we’d like shops, schools and the people of Dalton & Newton to get involved and decorate the town with their flags or display them in the parade.”

Neil also issued a further rallying call to anyone that can help. He said “To ensure the future of the Dalton Carnival parade we need the assistance of more volunteers. We want to keep the tradition of the parade going but we need more volunteers who can give up a few hours on Carnival day to make this happen.” Neil continued “We urgently need volunteers who can man road closures or line the parade route. It’s actually quite an enjoyable job. Dip raising money

Gary Smedley bravely took a New Year’s Day Dip on behalf of St Mary’s Hospice. Dressed suitably in a diving suit and snorkel Gary jumped in accompanied by lots of wet and dry supporters. Gary has been doing this for seven years, boosting funds for all sorts of worthwhile causes. Gary said: “What better cause than St Mary’s? And it doesn’t cost you anything! We were overwhelmed at the people who came out to support us with at least ten people jumping in too!”

Gary supported by his partner Alison Rigg raised a splash-tastic £541! This will be split between St Mary’s hospice care and specifically going to Christmas lighting for their Inpatient Unit. Gary has been invited back to St Mary’s later in the year to see the wonderful impact of his fundraising. We will keep you posted …. Also watch out for Gary taking part in Coniston to Barrow as a red squirrel on the 6th of May.

After just 3 years, Another Fine Fest has established itself as one of the firm favourites in Ulverston’s festival calendar. It is also one of the most well attended with estimates of up to 10,000 revellers flocking to Ulverston for the 2016 instalment, 1180 of whom came together to secure a Guinness World record for the biggest ever shaving foam pie fight! A musical fest within a fest With the help of several local promoters and the support of eight official partner venues, Amigos, Sun Inn, Kings Arms, Hope & Anchor, The Piel, The Mill, Rose & Crown and the Farmers, the festival brings you lashings of Rock, Indie, Jazz, Blues, House, Techno, Breakbeats, Hip Hop, Disco, Reggae, Funk, Folk, World, Country, Psychedelic and more.

Three outdoor stages The Market Cross stage runs from 10am to 4.30pm and will play host to a variety of street theatre, circus workshops, live music, a mass fruity gathering (banana dance!) and a spectacular finale consisting of a 100 piece drum band known as the Bang Gang.

On 17th June, Ulverston will once again erupt in a multicolured feast of live music, DJs, circus, street theatre, live street art, window painting, yarnbombing, interactive workshops and a cornucopia of various other weird and wonderful activity. Yes, that’s right, the world record breaking Another Fine Fest is back to rock the cobbles with the fourth instalment of it’s free multi-arts festival.

The magical Melodrome mobile stage heads through from its base in Morecambe to station itself outside the Laurel & Hardy Museum between 10am and 7.30pm. The first 3 hours will be dedicated to entertainment for and by children. Featuring comedy for kids and live music performed by local children who have been given free singing lessons provided by the festival in the run up to the event. The remainder of the line up will appeal to all ages and feature all manner of musical genres and a variety of entertainment from the entire spectrum of the creative world. The Farmers outdoor area is something of a street party running from 4.30pm - 11pm with DJs playing Funk, Breaks, Reggae, Hip Hop, World Beats and more to keep you dancing through the night.

Another Fine Helping Hand All of this wonderful entertainment is provided for free. The festival has the backing of it’s partner venues and from Ulverston BID, however in order to bring such a dazzling array of activity, it needs the support of the public also. The festival is currently running a crowdfunding campaign which offers a variety of rewards in return for donations. The funding generated will ensure that the festival is able to grow, attract the best names, run a national marketing campaign, pay all of the acts and artists involved and hopefully start to extend over two days.

Aggregate Industries has won contracts to expand BAE’s expansion of the shipyard: the extension of Devonshire

Dock Hall (DDH), the second-largest indoor shipbuilding facility in Europe and construction of the Central Yard Complex, opposite the main shipyard gate. Aggregate Industries has built a dedicated semi-mobile concrete plant, which can produce 80m³ of concrete per hour, at the Port of Barrow. Objections flood the SLDC planning website where further details can be found. The target decision date is 30 April 2017. SL/2016/0600

Complaints Persist about Lindal’s Proposed Concrete Batching Plant Residents are urging SLDC to “end this planning application fiasco”. The Ulverston cycle café with a distinctly Italian theme, has become the latest eatery in Britain to scoop the unique ‘Woody Award’ by Lancasterbased wood specialist, Logs Direct. It is the only accolade celebrating chefs who cook in a wood-fired oven. Bici Café has been greeted with rave reviews from its customers and these were the basis of it scooping the award. Almost 200 people turned out to discover new employment opportunities at the Ulverston Job Fair held in the Coronation Hall. More than thirty companies and training organisations were represented at the event including BAE Systems, Bender UK, Furness College and Gen 2. The event was organised by Ulverston Community Partnership with Barrow JobCentrePlus and Ulverston Town Council. During the three hours of the Job Fair the hall had a steady stream of visitors seeking new jobs or the chance to upskill through training. Ulverston Community Enterprises also had a stall at the event to recruit volunteers to help with the running of the Coronation Hall alongside full time staff, and encourage applicants for the role of Hospitality and Bar

Manager at the venue. Fiona Priestley from Barrow JobCentrePlus reported: “It was a great turnout despite terrible weather on the day. The feedback from the companies and organisations at the show was excellent. They told us that they met some very good candidates for the vacancies and training opportunities they were offering, and were optimistic that many of the conversations at the event would result in full time employment.” Cllr Norman Bishop-Rowe who leads on the event on behalf Ulverston Community Partnership added: “The event at the Coro is always well supported because it gives companies the chance to reach out into the community, and people seeking jobs find it a friendly and welcoming venue to informally chat with people, and explore possibilities.”

Furness Refugee Support Furness Refugee Support (formally Ulverston Refugee Support) has been doing some excellent work over the last couple of years. The group collects and sorts clothes, food and toiletries at the Labour office on Cavendish Street, Ulverston, on the first weekend of every month. They have so far sent half a dozen vans and two articulated lorries to refugees, including those in Syria, as well as more

than £8,000 in cash donations. FRS also organises fundraisers including singalongs at the Hope and Anchor, sponsored walks and comedy nights at the Laurel and Hardy Museum. The group is currently organising to welcome refugees to Furness, due sometime later this year. If you would like to get involved, please get in touch via the Furness Refugee Support Facebook page.

For the love of ‘Little Beasties’

Taking on The Bakehouse in Greenodd 29 year old Kirsty Postlethwaite and her partner Chris Small, 25, run The Bakehouse in Greenodd. They specialise in traditional, Great British baking with a modern twist and produce all their own delicious breads, pies, pasties, pastries and cakes in house using locally sourced ingredients. We caught up with Kirsty to find out more about her experience of being a young entrepreneur.

What were you doing before you took over the bakery in 2014? “I had been working as a chef for eight years in a wide variety of establishments from small cafes to Michelin star restaurants. Chris had worked as a chef too in bistros but had more recently turned his hand to marketing in a local catering equipment company.” Had you run your own business previously?

“No, neither of us have been self employed but have ran kitchens with our own teams so had a small taste of the necessary experience needed.” Was it something that you had been planning for a while?

“We’ve both always dreamed of working for ourselves. I personally have always wanted a bakery since I became a chef and Chris has definitely developed a serious passion

for it too, for someone who never considered themselves a baker!”

What was the biggest challenge in making the leap to self employment?

“There is so much uncertainty, it’s terrifying! I remember that first week just thinking “what if nobody comes, what if nobody likes it?!!”

Do you think it is more difficult to run your own successful business in a rural area as opposed to a city environment? “It is definitely more of a gamble, you’ve really got to spread the word being somewhere like Greenodd. It’s not really a destination so passing trade is not always guaranteed. Mandy Christopher opened the doors of Little Beasties at the tender age of 19 and has become one of Ulverston’s best-loved characters over the past 11 years. Before this, she did a National Diploma in animal management and had planned to work in animal rescue. However, when the shop that she did her work experience in closed, leaving her with no job, she decided, with the encouragement of her family, to open Little Beasties. Even though she had trouble getting credit because she inherited the previous owner’s bad credit score, she persevered. So, in the early days, she had to borrow money from her sister and her parents and live very frugally! She had been in business for two years when the recession came in 2008 and she had to work all the hours that she could. It was hard, but she enjoyed it. She just had to hope that she could keep going with such a low cash flow and suppliers becoming tighter with their accounts or even going under themselves. However, she was absolutely determined not to allow her standards of animal care slip just to make money. She always made sure that the animals went to the best homes and she has always loved the rescue aspect of the business. Teaching her customers how to care for the animals has also been central to her work and has really set her apart from the competition. Mandy has employed a few assistants since about 2009, giving them full training. She eventually moved from the small shop to a bigger one and knocked through into another unit to make the shop larger. Her famous animal parties have entertained countless children in the area, including youth clubs, Brownies and educational institutions. Her advice to other entrepreneurs would be “start small and know what youwant to do, stick to your own values and make sure it’s something you really love as it takes over your life!”

Celebrating their first year Cumbria Training Centre, based in Barrow and Workington, is celebrating their first twelve months in business. Cumbria Training Centre was established in April 2016 taking over from Age UK Training. Age UK Training closed its national operation in March, due to it receiving an inadequate Ofsted judgement, but the Barrow centre was highlighted for praise

by Ofsted in the report, with the education watchdog recognising the Barrow centre’s good apprenticeship work.

The Training Centre now employs 26 members of staff, has 5 funded contracts and over 500 learners. Cumbria Training Centre offer apprenticeships to all ages, across a variety of sectors and levels, as well as traineeships for those aged 16-18 to help them secure

employment.

Miss Nicola Cassley, Cumbria Training Centre Managing Director, said they work with a lot of employers throughout Cumbria who have been extremely loyal and supportive during the transition. The Centre has retained partnerships with Cumbria Partnership NHS, Fusion Training and Risedale Estates.

Aspiring Social Enterprise Leaders of Tomorrow

The Aspiring Leaders Programme (ALP) in Cumbria is a three year course that combines formal academic teaching with experiential learning and personal development. Students are assigned leadership mentors and placements, gain work experience and run leadership projects, all whilst achieving a Degree in Social Enterprise Leadership. The Programme was created in 2011 to develop leadership potential within local communities and social and charity organisations in Cumbria. Jack Todd was one of those young people who had the passion and ambition to help others, but wasn’t entirely sure how to transfer his skills into doing something productive. “I have always had a passion for working with young people and those who are not able to get involved in the same opportunities as myself”, says Todd. Todd, who lives in Millom, admits he was never interested in the idea of University until he saw the opportunities presented to him by the ALP course. “I was never interested in going to University. The idea of sitting in lectures every day and coming out the other side with over £30,000 worth of debt did not interest me. But with the support of the Francis C Scott Charitable Trust, University of Cumbria, Brathay Trust and everyone else involved, my life has thoroughly been changed”. Todd had been fortunate

enough to gain experience and share his own skills worldwide before starting the course, working in camps in New York and Delhi, India. It was there where the ALP Programme was brought to his attention. “In 2012 I worked at Camp Hayden Marks, a summer camp for disadvantaged children from New York City. I worked as a Drama Specialist and got to teach over 1200 students across the summer. I also applied for International Citizen Service, and got a placement to work for Swechha, based in Delhi. It was in India, my attention was brought to the ALP Programme and I did not hesitate to apply”. Although the students who participate in the ALP programme are full-time, it was the independent nature and links to various organisations which attracted Todd to the course. “Of course we are full-time students, with university days delivered by the University of Cumbria, but ALP goes much further than that. It allows us to meet some amazing organisations and individuals

through Common Purpose and being pushed out of our comfort zones”. With Todd coming towards the end of his final year of his course, he has already turned his attention towards potential future projects, setting his ambitions high. “I have always wanted to be my own boss and run my own organisation for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. ALP has shown me how to make this a reality. And Jack isn’t the only one to

heap praise on the Aspiring Young Leaders Programme. Hein van der Westhuizen from Workington believes it’s an ideal starting point for young people wanting to make a difference. “The ALP is about giving passionate young people in Cumbria the chance to make a real difference in their communities in a sustainable way”, said van der Westhuizen. “It’s a great programme to learn about yourself and to meet others who are as passionate about positive change”.

A once in a lifetime chance for future community leaders to get the training and support you need to excel. Things to do this Easter There is so much more to Easter than lifting self imposed restrictions we may have embarked on throughout Lent and over indulging in anything egg shaped made from chocolate. Easter Pache Egg play On Easter Monday The Furness Morris Dancers are performing their Easter Pache Play around Furness. Hundred year old local and traditional Spring Mumming plays were researched and revived by the Furness Morris Dancers some fifty years ago and they have continued the tradition of performing them locally. Their Easter Pache Play is a synopsis of plays that were played in many of the Furness villages in the 19th and early 20th century. The play is in the form of most traditional Spring mumming plays; a short, humorous play on the theme of death and rebirth. The characters include Lord Nelson, Saint George, an Evil Knight and a quack Doctor. The plot includes a fight scene and a mention of eggs! And it is suitable for all ages.

The brief play is followed by Morris dancing. Furness Morris Dancers are then inviting anybody who would like to try a dance to join in. They are hoping that as many as possible will come and enjoy the play, and support a local tradition. The performance is free and lasts for around half an hour in total. They also mention that their performances are weather dependent and of course also dependent on a supply of injury-free performers!

Where is Peter Rabbit?

One of England’s biggest Easter egg hunt takes place in the Lake District on Wednesday 12th April starting at 10.00am. Children and adults will be able to join the Treasure Trail for 100 handmade exquisite ceramic eggs by local artist Sue Dunne. The annual egg hunt is now in its 10th year and proceeds go to the WaterAid charity. There are some great prizes to be won - and tickets for fantastic family attractions, including tickets for the World of Beatrix Potter’s popular show, ‘Where is Peter Rabbit?’ – the Beatrix Potter musical adventure! Ulverston Canal Regeneration Group’s annual Easter Egg Trail is just around the corner, and it looks like it will be bigger and better than ever! Again, local businesses have donated money for plywood eggs so that schools, community groups and charities have been able to join in for free. Plywood eggs are decorated in various ways and then placed along the tow path for visitors to admire. Hidden among

the Eggs are Easter Egg Bunnies. Find the bunnies and tick them off the Trail Sheet to be in with a chance of winning a Chocolate Easter Egg! The Hoad re opens for the season this Easter

The views from the Sir John Barrow Monument in Ulverston are spectacular and well worth a visit. The monument re-opens for the

season at Easter. On Good Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday 14th to 17th April the Hoad is open from 1pm to 5pm - weather permitting. The monument will then be open every Sunday from 1pm to 5pm until the end of October. On Bank holiday weekends the monument will be open over the whole weekend including Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Admission is free but donations are very much appreciated to help with the upkeep of the monument.

Don’t Tell Suzy

Don’t Tell Suzy is a Furness and South Lakes based band who deal in rootsy feisty folk. They bring a joyful spirit and a bit of DIY punk attitude to their music, favouring good feeling over technicality. Their live set is a natural balance of the soulful and silly. You may recognise guitarist/vocalist Amy as the face of the Windermere Song which has been shown in the trailers at the Roxy for the last few years! Your Facebook page seems to suggest that Don’t Tell Suzy was formed for Ulverston Apple Day, have we got that right? “Close! It was actually Staveley Apple Day up in the Lakes. A friend asked Amy to tell an apple themed story on the day and she found herself writing a song instead. Kat and Ann-Catrine joined her and we had such a ruddy good time that we decided to form a band!” Can you tell us more about how you came together as a band? After the Apple day we started meeting regularly with our friend Hazel joining us too. Amy was writing lots of songs at the time and we spent some lovely long winter evenings shaping them together, playing with harmonies and percussion, and drinking lots of tea and wine! The band has evolved over time, with Hazel leaving to travel and Eve joining us in 2016 bringing her beautiful fiddle playing. We currently have your new EP on rotation in the office, there are some beautiful tunes on there and a variety of genres, one of your tunes, La Burbuja has a latin feel about it, what are your musical influences? “The songs definitely draw on a range of influences… we all have experience in drumming groups and samba bands which might explain the latin feel and percussion. Kat and Amy were in Cumbrian band The Indian Postal Service (once described as ‘tribal progressive blues folk!’) for a few years. The local music scene and that homegrown rootsy feel is definitely an influence. We all enjoy a bit of reggae, and Amy was in a punk band for a while. It’s all thrown in the melting pot!” For those that are unfamiliar with the band, can you tell us what kind of topics you touch on lyrically? Is there any particular message that you are trying to convey? 18

“The songs cover a range of themes although some of them are definitely recurring! Amy is a bit obsessed with the ocean and the metaphors around that so you will hear a lot of oceanic references. The last few years have been a changeable time in her life so there are strong themes of awakening and new beginnings, with the odd bit of political comment. In general they are about living life fully and freely. There is no intention to convey a certain message, and themes are based on what feels interesting/ moving at the time.” How does living in this area affect your output? “We are influenced by the strong local folk music scene. Cumbria attracts those wanting to live quite alternative lifestyles and rejecting the values of much of mainstream society. There’s a real spirit of getting on and creating your own entertainment! The landscape influences us too. We are all in love with the mountains and the outdoors in general so wildlife and wild places often form the focus. And being in Furness we’re influenced by proximity to the sea and the seagulls outside the window in the morning!”

Are you able to sustain yourself creatively or do you have a regular day job also? “I’ve had part time jobs alongside the freelance work for much of the last few years, including working for Cumbria Development Education Centre and the John Muir Award. At the moment I’m running Early Years music sessions for the Brewery Arts Centre (including BYM BAM at the Coro on a Monday morning) so that’s my bread and butter for now, but who knows for next year! What would you say to anyone who wanted to eschew the typical 9-5 in favour of a more creative, artistic existence? “Hmmm it’s such a personal choice. For me, it’s about having a livelihood that matches my values and allows me to be in my creative flow. I have found a really fulfilling way of doing that and wouldn’t swap it for a 9-5 existence, despite the security that brings.”

What does the future hold for Don’t Tell Suzy? We don’t tend to plan too far ahead! Local Brass Bands to compete in Music Festival

Dalton and Ulverston Town Band will compete against each other in the South Cumbrian Music Festival this month. The event, which is held at the Coronation Hall in Ulverston, will see the two local brass band’s challenge for The Ulverston Town Band Trophy. Each brass band will play a March, a Hymn and an Original Composition suitable for a Brass band. Dalton Town Band conductor, Mark Latimer, believes healthy opposition, provides the contest with a much needed competitive edge. “It’s really positive for the whole festival that two local brass bands are going up against each other”, Latimer says. “In the past we have had instances where Dalton has been the only band in the specific class, so it kind of defeats the purpose. This year, nobody will want to lose, so there is an extra incentive to prepare properly”. Ulverston Town Band, led by Mitch Rowlandson, are competing at the festival for the first time since 2014, and flugel-horn player Gill Benjamin says the band have fitted in extra rehearsals in preparation. “It is healthy to compete”, says Benjamin. “Even if you don’t get the result you wish for, it is extremely insightful to know the standard of other local bands, with the same sort of resources and personnel to ourselves, and see where we can improve”. This year’s festival will run from Sunday 2nd until Saturday 8th April, with numerous solo and ensemble competitions, for an array of instruments being held across the week. The various brass classes, in which both Dalton and Ulverston are involved, are taking place on Sunday 2nd April.

On Friday 21st April John Harle, an Ivor Novello award-winning saxophonist, composer, and record producer will take centre stage at The Coro. His groundbreaking musical work spans across musical genres from classical to contemporary pop. John is joined by virtuoso pianist Steve Lodder and Ulverston’s own Jess Gillam who will make a guest appearance. Jess, the first ever saxophonist to reach the Final of BBC Young Musician of the Year, is mentored by John Harle.

John Harle’s early work gained public acclaim with his Saxophone Concertos album on EMI Classics which is widely seen as the definitive recording of the major classical works. He has performed with countless orchestras and conductors worldwide and has sold over half a million CDs in the classical field alone. John is also the composer of over a hundred film and TV scores, two operas and fifty concert works. Well known are the theme to BBC’s Silent Witness and the epic score

to Simon Schama’s A History of Britain.

John Harle’s awe-inspiring career also includes being musical director and producer for Moondog, Herbie Hancock, Elmer Bernstein, Ute Lemper, Lesley Garrett, Kathryn Tickell, Michael Nyman, Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine.

Pianist Steve Lodder has worked with the elite of the UK’s jazz musicians. Internationally he has been a member of George Russell’s ‘Living Time Orchestra’ since the early ‘90’s and has toured with Carla Bley ,Steve Swallow and Ernestine Anderson. He met with John Harle also in the early ‘90’s and recorded alongside Elvis Costello.

Green Door Art Trail at Ford Park

The Green Door Art Trail is returning on 8 and 9 April with more than fifty artists taking part across South Lakes and around Morecambe Bay. With a fantastic range of members’ work on show it is possibly the widest yet with painting, prints, papercuts, photographs, jewellery, wood, glass, textiles, sculptures and ceramics. It is a great opportunity to meet artists, talk to them about how they create their work (perhaps even see them in action) and, of course, to purchase their work. One of the UK’s foremost artist-led printmaking festivals is returning bigger and better than ever this month after taking its first break in 15 years. There will be more artists exhibiting, more artworks for sale and more awards for artists than ever before. Printfest, held at Coronation Hall, Ulverston, is dedicated to the exhibition and sale of contemporary hand-made prints and offers the opportunity for the best of the UK’s (and beyond) printmakers to gather under one roof, to share practice and learn from each other. Printfest was founded in 2001 by print-making artists Judy Evans and Ronkey Bullard, with the help of Chris Benefield, who owned The Tinners’ Rabbit in Market Street, Ulverston. With 15 consecutive successful years exhibiting at The Coronation Hall in Ulverston, the Printfest Team took a break in 2016 to take stock and re-evaluate. New chair, Sally Bamber, said: “The appetite and enthusiasm shown by both artists and visitors during 2016 demonstrated to us the demand to make sure that Printfest 2017 must happen. ” Sally continued “We want artists to feel welcomed, we want visitors to feel important,

The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines make a welcomed return to Ulverston Ulverston Victoria High School Music Department is delighted to announce that the Band of the Royal Marines will be returning to The Coronation Hall to perform alongside UVHS Wind Band. On Saturday 27th May the Royal Marines Band, regarded as probably the finest military band service in the world, will be coming to Ulverston to perform yet another blockbusting concert alongside the 95-strong UVHS Wind Band who are not only ranked amongst the best school bands in the UK but also have an enviable reputation across Europe. Last year they enjoyed a superb concert tour to Austria culminating in an amazing performance at the home of the Salzburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and this year

they are travelling to the Rhine Valley region of Germany to give three highprofile concerts.

The visit to Ulverston by the Royal Marines will be the ninth time since 2014 that they have agreed to share the stage with UVHS – further strengthening the unique relationship between the two organisations. Indeed, following the concert, eight of the UVHS Year 10 GCSE musicians will be travelling down to Portsmouth for a week on work experience at the Royal Marines School of Music.

Amongst the Marines Band there will also be several former UVHS music students making a return to the Coro stage -

Sergeant Andy Spain (sax), Musician Rob Norrie (trumpet), Musician Ruth Tarr (violin and sax) and Trainee Musician Jodie Giles (oboe) - as well as a couple of former Marines musicians from UVHS. The whole concert will be an unforgettable experience to both audience and performers alike – tickets went on sale from The Coro Box Office end of February priced from £17.50 to £12, with concessions available for students and OAPs.

Pennington Paces

Keeping Active at Pennington CE School. Both pupils and staff enjoy an active education at Pennington. Children walk or run ‘Pennington Paces’ round the playground for 10 minutes daily. The school finds that it is a great chance for everybody to keep fit whilst socialising with the whole school community. The school has also recently purchased new playground equipment selected by the school council. All classes work with a PE coach every week and are offered a wide range of after school activities including gymnastics, football, netball and multiskills. Here follows a quick

update of a few of the many local sports events the school has attended. Most recently a number of Pennington pupils competed at the Ulverston Swimming Gala. The swimmers performed extremely well and finished in first position. Mrs Storey (the acting headteacher) and Mrs Williams (the PE governor) who accompanied the children were very proud. All schools did exceptionally well and everyone showed brilliant sportsmanship. A team of footballers recently attended an inter schools football tournament and enjoyed a great afternoon competing against other local schools. They finished 2nd overall and congratulated the winning team. Mr McQuillan, who attended the event, was impressed with a high standard of football and skills the children demonstrated. Other sports events attended recently have been the inter-school gymnastics

competition hosted by UVHS. Pennington sent three teams and all children performed sequences and vaults with style and grace. Six Pennington pupils have also attended the country cross country championships in February and ran a long, muddy race. Mrs Storey said, “Healthy competition can be great fun when everyone is a good sport. Success at Boccia - Bronze Medal Stars at UVHS Students from the Ulverston Victoria High School Sports Ability Club have been learning to play Boccia, a game similar to bowls only played with leather balls. After successfully qualifying at The Lord’s Taverners County Boccia Competition* in November 2016, six students from the UVHS Sports Ability Club (Alfie, Harvey, Ella, Michael, Daniel and Owen) travelled to Liverpool to represent Cumbria in the Northwest Regional Finals earlier in February this year. Along with about one hundred and ten other students from schools across the northwest of England, the UVHS team was engaged in a competitive tournament throughout the day. As the day progressed the excitement and tension built up. All players and teams used their tactics

and skills in an effort to get ahead of the field. At the very end, despite a valiant performance from all six students, the UVHS team were pipped to the post, but they still won the bronze medal position, becoming the first Cumbrian team ever to win a regional medal in the Pan-Disability division. Congratulations to all players for a fantastic day and team performance. Xenolith Explorer Scouts help shape Ulverston 24 Xenolith explorer scouts and their young leaders spent an evening with The Mayor of Ulverston Councillor Mark Wilson, Councillor Judy Pickthall and Councillor Colin Pickthall, discussing issues and ideas that could improve Ulverston. This event was organised as part of the Scout Association’s national ‘You Shape’ strategy and run by two explorers 15yr old Alex Nicklin and 16yr old Megan Bartlett who were taking on the role as leaders for the evening as part of their leadership development ‘Wear Their Necker’ initiative. Over thirty ideas and comments were generated, shared and discussed. A top five were identified and further debated then there was a vote for the top two topics which were, creating a safe crossing place at the Rake Lane/Springfield Rd junction for UVHS pupils and the siting of a bike repair/ maintenance stand in Ulverston. The Explorers will now prepare a presentation on their findings with possible solutions to those topics and present it to the Town Council. Councillor Judy Pickthall discussed how the explorers could be involved in the development of ‘The Coro’. Two explorers

volunteered to help and the unit offered to do a survey on what the 14yr to 17yr olds of Ulverston and area would like to see The Coro provide for their age group. Councillor Colin Pickthall came to update the Explorers on the Cycle Policy they developed and presented to the Ulverston Town Council following a similar evening 3 years ago. He said “The initial idea of having a cycle path from Ulverston to Greenodd was generated from this explorer unit, now we have funding to back the project and an engineer is looking at the route. Finally the Explorer Scout unit expressed an interest in carrying out a Disability Access Survey across Ulverston as part of their ‘Million Hands Project’ which is supported by Leonard Cheshire Disability. It was agreed they should carry out this survey and feed back the results to the Ulverston Town Council.

Throughout the evening, the Xenoliths had another guest, Gareth Hodgson the Cumbria Scout Commissioner for Youth who came along to see how the local group tackled ‘You Shape’. His reaction was fantastic and he said “Xenolith have demonstrated all aspects of the You Shape pledge then taken it a step further and involved the local council in shaping things for the future. This means they are the first group in Cumbria to achieve their Gold You Shape Pledge.” To finish the evening Gareth presented certificates to Alex and Megan for their ‘Wear Their Necker’ event and then swapped Neckers with the Mayor to claim his own ’Wear Their Necker’ Mayor Mark Wilson said “It has been an interesting and productive evening. As councillors we have ended up with more work, but the Explorers were engaged and interested throughout the meeting”

APRIL IN THE KITCHEN GARDEN April is the month that everything wakes up again and spring is definitely in the air. It’s time to catch up with the neighbours over the garden fence, they’ll be starting to come out of hibernation now along with the other South Lakeland wildlife! The soil will be warming up too and towards the end of the month, you can begin to sow salad leaves, carrots, peas, beetroot, spinach and chard direct to your beds. Seeds to sow include the hardy varieties of courgettes and, sweetcorn and French beans. Make sure you keep them under fleece, though! You can also plant your first earlies and possibly your main crop potatoes as well as onions and shallots. You can get your asparagus crowns in now too If you have planted carrots and other seeds earlier, keep thinning them out.

Get your beds ready by adding compost and organic matter and muck. It’s a good time to build raised beds and fill them if you are going to get some new ones. You can make them out of pallets if you are handy! Spending time clearing weeds at this stage will really help you later on in the year. Preparing the soil will ensure that your plants get the best start possible. Harvesting Here’s what you could be enjoying in April if you planted wisely last autumn: cabbage, kale, cauliflower, early sprouting broccoli, Jerusalem artichokes, and parsnips. If we get some nice weather, you could also begin to enjoy your first radishes, salad leaves and

pea shoots. You might also have some chard, spinach, and leeks left from the winter too. Young chives will be ready for harvest and always add a lovely spring garnish to all kinds of dishes, soups and salads. And of course, you could be enjoying your first rhubarb crumble and custard!

Inner Wheel Club of Ulverston Inner Wheel Club President, Charlotte Wills, welcomed members and Past District Chairman Maureen Brown to the February business meeting. Maureen brought greetings from District 19 which covers North Lancashire and the whole of Cumbria. President Charlotte then inducted new member Kay Hollis reminding her of the objects of Inner Wheel – To promote true friendship, to encourage the ideals of personal service and to foster international understanding. The Club’s service in the community this year was to serve tea and cakes to members of the Alzheimer’s Society. As the afternoon was entitled “Music for the

Brain”, eight of our members sang familiar songs which the Alzheimer’s group was also

able to join in with. One of the members loved singing and came to join our small choir.

The allocation of money raised by the Club will go to five local charities with further donations to BEAT, a charity which supports eating disorders and is the Inner Wheel National Association’s chosen charity and to Blood Bikes, the District’s chosen charity. Bluebirds search for consistency as last month of season approaches

Barrow AFC supporters are hoping that last month’s crucial victory against promotion rivals Tranmere Rovers is a season defining result. After struggling for any sort of form since the turn of the year, the Bluebirds upset the form book by beating in-form Rovers at Holker Street. However, despite the much needed morale boosting victory, Paul Cox’s side have still suffered from indifferent results, a run of just 3 victories in 11 league games over the past three months. Life-long Bluebirds supporter, Ian Dixon believes the club will struggle for a play-off place until they are able to put a run of results together. “It has been extremely frustrating to watch since the New Year”, says Dixon. “We

Focus on Furness appeal Jim Abel from Ulverston and Sonja Foster from Barrow are running the 10 marathons in 10 days around Lake Windermere in May. In doing so they hope to raise £8,000 for the Ambleside based youth charity Brathay Trust’s ‘Focus on Furness’ appeal. Jim and Sonja met three young adults at Brathay’s Barrow office earlier in March. Georgia Goodman, Jonathan Hughes and Adam Philip-Phillips who are working on a keeping safe project. Brathay’s ‘Be SAVY’ (Be Safe & Value Yourself) project, supported by the Focus on Furness appeal, has helped 20 young people from Barrow so far with weekly sessions and residentials at Brathay Hall. It has also funded the training of 18-25 year-olds, including Georgia, Jonathan and Adam, as peer leaders who can alert youngsters to the dangers of online grooming and what actions they can take to keep safe. Sonja Foster, a mum and grandma, said “Meeting Georgia, Jonathan and Adam

was very inspiring. What they are doing will help keep their generation and future generations safe.” “When I’m out there running and things start to hurt, I’ll think about all the good that the money raised for this appeal is doing and how my fundraising can help.” Father of two, Jim Abel added: “Helping kids and young adults who have lost their way is what Brathay does and that resonates with me. I cannot think of a better charity to support.
