The Ford Park Community Group many people, volunteering at Ford Park is a lifeline because they get to be in a peaceful, supportive and nurturing environment with time out to figure out ‘what next’. There are two basic trading arms at Ford Park, the cafe and the gardens. Mostly people who volunteer work in the gardens, which now includes the shop and nursery, but occasionally, people do volunteer in the cafe too. Typically, there can be anywhere from 5 to 30 volunteers on any one day depending on the availability of the volunteers and the needs of the park.
The Ford Park Community Group initially came together in the 1990s to ‘save Ford Park’ for the community of Ulverston. The small group of self-organised volunteers were determined to make sure that the grounds were available to anyone who wanted a place to sunbathe, play football or frisbee, have picnics, let children run around and generally enjoy some open green space in the centre of town. Although the main objective is still to secure the future of Ford Park for the enjoyment of the community, there is so much more on offer and the social enterprise has become a wonderful oasis for visitors and a refuge for the volunteers who help to keep the park running. Without the volunteers, it would be impossible for Ford Park to meet the relentless financial demands associated with the upkeep of the fields and buildings. Equally, the volunteers benefit from their time at Ford Park too because the staff ensure that it is a truly symbiotic relationship in which individuals who volunteer are valued and given training, the opportunity to learn new skills and (if appropriate) time and space to prepare for next steps in their job search. Ford Park have a clear social inclusion policy in the recruitment and selection of volunteers and this has resulted in a rich and eclectic team of people who contribute to the running of the park. Ford Park volunteers have and do come from all walks and stages of life including retired professionals, people of all ages who are ‘between jobs’ and people with many kinds of life challenges. For
There are a diverse spectrum of jobs that people can choose to do including: horticultural activities, engaging with the public, retail, creative projects and skilled and specialised community projects. Not only do the volunteers learn new skills from the staff at Ford Park and outside experts, but they also bring their own experiences and talents to the table and everyone gets a chance to learn from each other. Some stay for a few weeks or months, others for a number of years, but no matter how long people stay, everyone contributes to the Ford Park story. The volunteers at Ford Park benefit in so many ways. For some it is as simple as enjoying pleasant tasks, making new friends and having social interaction. There are also health benefits from having structure to the day and week, being physically active in nature and being in a socially positive environment. For others, the programme helps them to move forward with new skills, boosted confidence and self-belief and some practical support with preparing a C.V. and applying for jobs. The opportunity to gain new certificates in things like horticulture, first aid, food hygiene and the John Muir Awards can also help to fill in gaps in the C.V. too.
Being part of a community such as this is priceless, especially in this day and age where so many people are only connected to others through a computer or phone. Anyone can become a volunteer at Ford Park all you really need is a desire to be involved. So if you are interested and would like to find out more, you can call to arrange an informal chat with the volunteer manager who is called Cat on 01229 588164 or email her on cat@ford-park.org.uk

A Fresh Look for the Lantern Festival Volunteer organisers are gearing up for this year’s Lantern Festival on September 16th. Spending a penny gets easier
Ulverston Town Council have launched their Courtesy Toilet Scheme with a map showing the businesses which are happy for people to use their facilities. In the town centre these include Costa Coffee, the Virginia House Hotel and the Red Rose Club, while further out the railway station and Ford Park Coach House Cafe and Bistro are participating. Meanwhile the Market Hall toilets are having a long overdue facelift, with the town council and South Lakeland
District Council funding the work, in order to provide free public conveniences of a good standard whenever the Market Hall is open. While the gents are closed, the ladies and disabled toilet can be used and vice versa. It is hoped that the Courtesy scheme and Market Hall toilet refurbishment will provide a better standard of facilities for locals and visitors, since the only public convenience, in the Gill, incurs a small charge. Opening times for businesses in the scheme vary, so please pick up a map from the Town Council offices or information points around the town.
Build On Build Up - adult learning It is never too late to build on and update your skills. Helen Edmunds, of the local Community Learning & Skills (formerly Adult Education) has just ran a couple of courses targeted at the over 50s with the objective of updating CVs, job searching online (and offline), understanding and researching social media sites for work, writing cover letters and more. Helen is proudly confirming that, from the first course earlier this year, more than 50% of the learners are now in work! The success rate has been equally encouraging for the following courses Helen is teaching. The courses, called Build On Build Up, are over four full days and taught in conjunction with Kendal Jobcentre. Rosemary Harrison, who took part in Helen’s first course this spring says “ For me it was about believing in my own abilities and made me realise that I do have worth, and am a valuable member within the work market.” Caroline Duncan, another learner says “Being on the course with Helen and the ladies and gentlemen of a certain age helped me realise I was not the only person to be unemployed and feeling no longer wanted because of our age. The course helped build self-esteem and regain some self-confidence in myself giving me the drive and determination to approach employers and put myself forward with confidence in my own ability.” Caroline continues “It helped me to move forward and approach each challenge with confidence to let my personality carry me through, eventually securing a job and having two more job offers. Never give up on yourself grab every opportunity with both hands. Take the offers of help even if you don’t think you need it as in the end there is someone there even if you just need to talk.” www.cumbria.gov.uk/learningandskills 01539 713257

A Wall Worth Building Many walkers will have noticed the ruinous state of one side of the iconic structure often known as the ‘Great Wall of China’ enclosing a stretch of footpath on Little Hoad. The Civic Society has been keen for a while to restore it to its former glory, so that children today can have the same memories as slightly older people of this sheltered route between two open spaces. After being contacted by the society, Tony Breakell of the Drystone Walling Association of Great Britain has kindly agreed that he and other members will take on repairing the wall as one of their community projects. The work will take place, with the permission of the
farmer, on the weekend of 12th and 13th August, but will not interfere with the Hoad marathon races which will take a slightly different route. However, if you are on Hoad either to encourage the runners or just taking a stroll you are welcome to come along, watch members of the association at work on their traditional craft and ask any questions. Although the association will do the actual walling, the Civic Society will need volunteers to help in retrieving suitable stone from the field beforehand. There will

probably be a work party in July or early August, and anyone who would like to help can contact Lynda on lbw1@btinternet.com .

Friends of Lightburn Park Update
As reported in the September issue of Ulverston Now last year, the Friends of Lightburn Park (FoLP) have made great strides in improving the park and promoting harmony between its different users. Their recent update shows that this progress is continuing, with the wildlife-friendly area now enhanced by a new specially planted bed, bird boxes built by Sir John Barrow school and an impressive 5 star bug hotel made from pallets. Park information will soon be displayed on a new notice board being made by Adult Day Services, paid for by the FoLP and a donation from Cllr Bishop-Rowe. With the support of the PCSO’s and residents of the five streets around the park, who keep an eye out for any disturbance, anti-social
behaviour has been greatly reduced, and successful fundraising means that two new goal posts will be arriving. UVHS pupils have now created the designs for different graffiti on the skate park, and there will be a spray day in July after exams are over. The next step for the FoLP, who work endlessly behind the scenes gardening and looking for funding, is to raise money for a Multi-Use Games Area to replace the old tennis courts. In spite of signs indicating where dogs are not allowed, dog-fouling can still be a problem, but the FoLP, Neighbourhood Watch members and responsible dog-owners have been identifying and reporting offenders to the PCSO’s and SLDC so that enforcement officers can take action. The FoLP and Ulverston in Bloom have worked together since 2014, and it is hoped that the judges of Cumbria in Bloom this year will recognise all the hard work which has gone into making Lightburn Park the lovely space it is today. If you have a spare hour or two to become a volunteer/member of FoLP and make a real difference to your community, contact amanda.smith1968@aol.co.uk .
Great la’al WalkFest
Helped by the fine weather Ulverston WalkFest organisers have reported another successful year with numbers increasing year on year. Participants came from near and afar - Finland, Australia, London, Holland, the Midlands and Lancashire. Peter, 81, who came all the way from Pembroke in his caravan, went on a walk every day for a week. Themed walks, such as the Copper Mines, Iron Age to Iron Mine and Mining Cists and Cairns, continued to be popular and walkers who attended the Rusland Moss walk were rewarded with a wonderful display from the Ospreys. The most wellattended walk this year was the Herb Walk with Sarah Atkinson from The Medicine Garden in Ulverston. Ulverston WalkFest organisers are keen to keep the walk fees as low as possible so everyone can enjoy the benefits of the walks. Ulverston Town Council helps to keep the fees low with annual financial support for this popular local festival. Images from this year’s festival will soon be available on www.ulverstonwalkfest.co.uk

New extended services by CancerCare
CancerCare, a local charity that supports people affected by life limiting conditions in South Lakeland and North Lancashire, has set up a bigger base in both Ulverston and Barrow. There has been a CancerCare massage therapist based at Furness General Hospital
for 16 years but there has been a gap in the community. Now, CancerCare is offering their massage and counselling services at the Trinity Church Centre & Hindpool Community Centre in Barrow as well as various locations in Ulverston. Rachel Minshull, Barrow development officer for CancerCare, said: “CancerCare have been in Lancaster and Kendal for over 30 years. Last year the trustees undertook research to assess the need for our services in the wider community in the Furness area. The research came back positive and the trustees put the money together and, with the help of funding from The Sir John Fisher Foundation, created my post to develop the service here.”
Individuals can be referred to CancerCare by medics, specialist nurses, charities or can even refer themselves. CancerCare’s services are often seen as a bridge between the medical and emotional side effects of developing cancer and other diseases. The charity’s qualified therapists can help cleanse minds and offer relaxing treatments like the Alexander Technique and acupressure.

Premier Inn is Progressing Work has started apace on the Premier Inn at the North Lonsdale site in Ulverston. This recently neglected piece of land beside the canal is in the process of being transformed. Premier Inn, a British chain begun in 1987 trading as the Travel Inn, currently has over 750 hotels throughout the UK. Under different names in its early days, it has grown and no longer confines itself to the UK. Premier Inn can now be found in Ireland, Germany, the Emirates and India.

By 2016, Premier Inn had realised their promise and raised £7.5 million for charity, The Great Ormond Street Hospital. Perhaps Ulverston’s charities can benefit from such experienced fundraising credentials. “Progress on the site has been good since the start of works in March, and we’re hoping to open early next year,” said Michael Low of Camargue UK. Nick Johnston, the Acquisitions Manager at Premier Inn said, “We’re excited to have started work on this site, where we
are investing £5 million, and are currently making good progress towards its completion. We look forward to bringing a high quality Premier Inn to Ulverston early next year, creating 30 new year-round jobs for the area.”

Extension proves a hit at local pub The new extension at the Black Dog in Dalton has proved to be extremely popular amongst locals. Owners, Mark and Christine Corkill are delighted with the public reaction of the new bar, which opened last month. The renovation, which took a few months to complete, has seen the bar repositioned into a more suitable place, freeing up further room for a dining area. “The new bar has made our life a lot easier”, Mark said. “Previously the bar was situated in the centre of the room, so it became really congested quite easily”. “Now we can have people drinking at the new bar, whilst others can sit down. We are very pleased with how it’s turned out”. The pub had its first real substantial event since the renovation, with a 3 day beer festival on the 26th, 27th and 28th of May, with live music and food provided each day.

Welcome to the new Town Mayors!
In April, Barrow MP John Woodcock informed South Lakeland District Council that he shares the concerns of his constituents about the proposed building of a concrete batching plant in Lindal. However, Highways England offered no formal objection other than recommending “conditions be attached to any planning permission that may be granted”. Mr Smith, clerk to Lindal and Marton Parish Council, has summarised that all six relevant local authorities and the majority of local residents have expressed disapproval to this proposal. He reiterates the requirement of “exceptional circumstances” in order for the council to deviate from its Local Plan. “There is a very democratic reason why the Local Plan should be accorded great weight.” After 10 months of continued communications between residents, councils and government officials the decision date has now passed. After all the proposals, planning applications, assessments, surveys, reports and responses resulting in 278 documents on SLDC’s website, how will their decision affect the people of Lindal and the A590? www.applications.southlakeland.gov.uk SL/2016/0600
On the 15th of May a new Town Mayor was elected by Ulverston Town Council. The new Mayor, Cllr. Paul Smith has been a town councillor for six years, and will be supported by the new Deputy Mayor Cllr. David Webster. Cllr. Ann Thurlow was elected new Town Mayor to Dalton with Newton. Welcome to both our new Mayors and thank you to the outgoing Mayors. Ulverston Town AGM - Bright Stars At the Ulverston Annual General Meeting Mark Wilson, the outgoing Mayor, celebrated the year with presenting donations to local organisations to distribute the funds collected for Mayoral Charities. Children from Croftlands Infants School came to the AGM to give a wonderful presentation of their “Bright Stars “ project. ‘Bright Stars’ is a project aimed a developing entrepreneurship and community involvement across Cumbria. In Ulverston the Oxley Group is mentoring primary school pupils to take on smaller business projects, and see them through to completion. The children then select charities to receive the monies they have raised. Oxley Group Manager Jayne Moorby, together with Croftlands teachers explained how the project successfully raised £633 from a £50 seed corn grant.

In recent years the Sir John Barrow Cottage, in the hamlet of Dragley Beck on the southern edge of Ulverston, has been unused and empty following the winding down of Heritage First! (formerly the Ulverston Heritage Centre). They had been using it as a small museum dedicated to Sir John Barrow, who was born in the cottage and went on to have an illustrious career, serving on expeditions to China and South Africa, before becoming the longest serving second secretary to the admiralty where he was particularly involved in promoting arctic exploration. A public consultation carried out by Ulverston Town Council, who own the cottage, in 2016 demonstrated
that there was a strong wish to keep the building for the town (one of the possible options being to sell it!) but there was no obvious scheme whereby it could be sustainably run. Greenlane Archaeology therefore put forward a proposal to act as managers of the cottage, while working in partnership with local historians, re-enactors, artists, and the newly reformed Ulverston Civic Society, to provide activities and artists’ residences and enable the building to be visited and enjoyed by the public once again. It is still early in the process as the lease was only signed by Greenlane Archaeology in late April, but initial reorganisation and tidying at the cottage has begun and ideas are being worked on for future events. Watch this space for more news! Dan Elsworth, Director, Greenlane Archaeology
BOOK REVIEW
Leaving a Will helps to ensure that your Estate goes to the people and organisations that you choose. A Will is a legal document and it is important to ensure that it is correctly drawn up and executed. We are happy to call on clients at home or in hospital on request. We are also able to assist the bereaved in obtaining a Grant of Probate and dealing with the administration of the Estate, including preparing Inheritance Tax returns. We can also advise on ways to reduce the liability to pay Inheritance Tax, such as varying the terms of an intended Will, or a postdeath rearrangement, whereby a Will is effectively rewritten after death. In addition we provide advice and assistance in respect of Lasting Powers of Attorney and Court of Protection applications.

Visitors who tend to go only to tourist honey traps and walkers who keep to their familiar routes should quickly invest in this book. The authors clearly have a deep love and knowledge of Cumbria and of the nooks and crannies, features and events not usually mentioned in standard guidebooks. The 50 gems they have chosen range from Bowness-on Solway to Smardale Gill, and the book is packed with clear travel instructions, background history and beautiful photographs. A book which includes the Sir John Barrow monument and Foulshaw Moss, together with some of your reviewer’s personal favourites such as St Bees Head and Arnside Knott, is a welcome addition to the body of works on Cumbria.
‘I’ve Got Rhythm’ - An Evening of Popular Music What’s on in Dalton?
We hope to see you in Kendal Town Hall on Tuesday July 4th , 7pm, when Levens Choir joins forces with the celebrated jazz band from Queen Elizabeth School, Kirkby Lonsdale for a summer’s evening of foottapping jazz numbers and standard favourites! From Lloyd Webber’s ‘Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat’ to George Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’ and Billy Joel’s wistful ‘ And So It Goes’ to James Morgan’s upbeat take on ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’, the award-winning choir will show a very different side to its character from recent concerts! The choir runs a Choral Scholarship scheme to encourage talented young
singers and we’re delighted that our current scholars, along with the QES jazz musicians will show their skills with ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy’, ‘Libertango’, ‘When Sunny Gets Blue’ and many others. The singers and players come together for a stomping version of Fats Waller’s ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Gershwin’s ‘I Got Rhythm’.
This will be a relaxing evening full of fun! Come and join us but do note the slightly earlier start time than normal. Tickets are available from The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal or at the door. As usual, admission for children and students is free.

As reported in a previous Ulverston Now, these 50m high pylons are to connect the planned new Moorside power station with the National Grid at Heysham. The National Grid has announced there are ‘modifications that we could probably make to our design’, and the Nopylons group is hoping for an alternative plan which takes the environment and the natural beauty of the area into account.

Final Preparat ions in place re ady for Car ni val Se ason After months of hard work and scrupulous planning, four local Carnivals are set to take place over the next couple of weeks. Local councils and committees have worked tirelessly to ensure that each event will run as efficiently and as enjoyably as possible. Askam and Ireleth is taking place first, on Saturday 3rd June. Dalton’s is the following Saturday, whilst Ulverston’s is the 1st of July. There is also the eagerly anticipated return of Barrow Carnival after a couple of year’s absence, with the event been held on Saturday 24th June. Anyone wishing to require further information regarding the events can contact the particular organisers through the various social media forums.
Askam & Ireleth Carnival: Several local bands, dance groups, as well as two schools from Askam and Ireleth are set to take part in this year’s Carnival. Both St Peter’s school, Ireleth and Askam Village School will participate in the parade, as well as Dalton Town Band, St Andrews Pipe Band and Milnthorpe Steel Band. Milliom Band will also be playing, positioned near the railway station. One of the senior organiser’s, Pat McMullen believes that the Carnival is the final product of all the hard work and dedication, The Askam Community Events group put in. “Our primary aim is to provide a safe, fun-filled day for the village and wider community”, said McMullen. “We have a good working relationship with out PCSO who attends most of our meetings. “We arrange all the mundane ‘must haves’, like portable toilets, fencing, road marshal’s and of course insurance to name but a few”. McMullen also admits the group start planning almost as soon as the previous carnival is over, further highlighting the true scale of work that goes into planning such an event. “At the end of the day, our aim is to simply provide an enjoyable day for everyone in the village or further afield and that in turn maintains a happy community atmosphere”. The parade starts at Parklands Road at 12.30 on Saturday 3rd June, with the event concluding at Duddon Sports field, where there will be a variety of stalls and rides.

After last year’s event was dampened by a deluge of rain, there has been meticulous planning over the past 12 months to ensure this year ends on a more positive note. Neil McDougall, Chairman, Jamie Samson, Vice-Chairman and Secretary Darren Herbert have been at the centre of the planning, which includes the various events on Dowdales field afterwards, as well as the actual parade. “We literally started looking forward to this year, as soon as the last one finished”, says McDougall. “We have been meeting up once a week over the past few months just to ensure everything is covered”.

The parade, which will include Dalton Town Brass Band, Dalton United Football Club and Dalton Scouts, will begin at 1pm, with the gala following afterwards on Dowdales School field. And after last year’s frustration, McDougall is praying the weather is significantly better this time round. “Obviously it makes a massive difference, and to some extent determines how many people will show up. If we are lucky and get sunshine, it’s by far one of the most enjoyable and iconic days of the year”. Dowdales school field will be open from 10am on the day of the carnival, with a £1 entry charge for adults.

This June, Ulverston will once again erupt in a multicolured feast of live music, DJs, circus, street theatre, live street art, window painting, yarnbombing, interactive workshops, comedy and a cornucopia of various other weird and wonderful activity. With the help of several local promoters and the support of eight official partner venues, Amigos, Sun Inn, Kings Arms, Hope & Anchor, The Piel, The Mill, Rose & Crown and the Farmers, the festival brings you lashings of Rock, Indie, Jazz, Blues, House, Techno, Breakbeats, Hip Hop, Disco, Reggae, Funk, Folk, World, Country, Psychedelic and more late into the night!
Two outdoor stages The Market Cross stage runs from 10am to 5pm and will play host to a variety of street theatre, circus workshops, live music, a mass fruity gathering (banana dance!) and a spectacular finale consisting of a 100 piece drum band known as the Bang Gang. Banana Dance 17th June at AFF
Last year Another Fine Fest splatted it’s way into the Record Books staging the World’s largest ever shaving cream pie fight with 1,180 flan flingers. This year the festival that celebrates the birth of homegrown cinema legend Stan Laurel is paying homage to the quintessential comedy fruit: the banana. At 2pm on Saturday 17th June, more than 50 citizens will mass on Market Street in Ulverston, each with a hand crafted, giant cardboard banana, to perform the comedy spectacle of the year. Inspired by the 1943 Hollywood hit The Gang’s All Here, which made legend of Carmen Miranda in her tutti frutti hat; the
banana bunch will recreate a moment from the film, which has long since been forgotten. Imagine, if you will, a line of ladies and gents joyously flexing their giant yellow fruit to the hip swiveling sounds of Harry Bellafonte’s Day-O, sung by Kendal’s awesome Fellside Singers. It’s a sight you definitely don’t want to miss, indeed,
Barrow Carnival
Our banana dancers look forward to performing what promises to be an artistic yet fruity extravaganza and will be remembering the advice of the 1943 US censors who insisted bananas be held at the “waist not the hip” to avoid lewd displays.

This year will see the welcome return of Barrow Carnival with a Dance Gala on the Saturday and Live Stage on the Sunday. Ulverston Carnival:
This year the Carnival is supporting five local charities, Ulverston Mind, Hart Street Mencap Centre, Ulverston Inshore Rescue, Furness Carers and Furness Animal Refuge.
Saturday 1st July
Ulverston Carnival will take place on Saturday 1stJuly, through the streets of Ulverston and then onto Ford Park Field.
Collectors will be walking on the parade to collect any donations people are willing to give and Qazi feels a sense of satisfaction in been involved in a notoriously good-willed local celebration.
The theme this year of the parade is ‘The World of Entertainment’, meaning many people will be dressing up and walking through the town alongside various floats featuring members of the local community.
“Everyone involved is so proud to support such worthy causes and I would ask as many people to get involved as possible, whether as a steward, collector or just to have fun”.
One of the primary organisers Robert Qazi believes the event brings a party atmosphere and celebrates the authenticity of the town.
The traditional dancing competitions will take place on Ford Park at 10.30am, with the parade starting at 1pm.
“It honestly is a special, unique day of the year”, says Qazi. “It brings everyone together and shows off what Ulverston has to offer”.

Jennifer Street
Since moving to Ulverston from Manchester in 2012 Jennifer Street has been actively involved in the local community, providing all manner of creative workshops under the guise of Matrix Circus. Jenny was the brains behind the spectacular Lantern Finale in 2015 as well as The Community Spark Project which illuminated the fields and brought the magic to the Magic Orchard party in Pennington. vulnerable on stage as a clown, if people aren’t laughing it’s really hard on your ego and emotions but you can’t let it bother you because you need to keep your energy positive and have the courage to carry on with your show. You have to be very in tune with your audience, it takes a great amount of empathy to listen to what your audience wants and skill to improvise a live response that keeps making them laugh. Which skills do you think are particularly important to be a successful circus performer? This limited my practice and my expression so I slowly had to gain the confidence to practice in front of others. Then one day I got asked to perform at a festival for a free ticket and the rest is history. Now I love the stage. I love the way it brings people together for a good time, the connection between performer and audience, the adrenaline rush, creating shows that can inspire or change the way people think. I love to share what I have learnt and what circus has taught me and I hope it will bring others fun and enjoyment too.
With Matrix Circus she has hosted a variety of workshops at various venues throughout Ulverston Town and has also danced and performed at the annual Halloween Walk at Ford Park and at Monster Monster events. At the forthcoming Another Fine Fest Jen will be offering free circus and pebble painting workshops as well as a spectacular a circus cabaret.
When did you decide to run away and become the circus and what inspired your decision? It has never felt like a decision to become a circus performer but more of a compulsion. I was instantly captivated by the art form eight years ago when I saw my friend dancing with fire and I immediately had to have a go. I found it calming to dance with fire and unlit hula hoops and poi, like a movement mediation. So at first it was a way to deal with anxiety, an activity that gave my mind fascinating patterns to focus on when I was stressed. For the first two years I found it difficult to practice in front of other people because I was so shy.
Do you possess the wanderlust that is typically associated with circus performers? For sure! I can not resist an adventure. Last year I spent 3 months in an artist habitat and mini-paradise called Tadah, in the mountains of Antalya, Turkey. This year I’m moving between Cumbria, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Lancaster, performing, teaching and attending master classes. I’ll go anywhere to expand my learning and explore new ways to grow. Fire dancing in the middle of the Nevada desert with 300 other performers at Burning Man Festival has to be a personal highlight. You are currently at circus school at Newcastle’s Circus Central - what have you learnt since you joined up and has there been anything that you have found particularly challenging? I am training aerial silks, hoop, trapeze, contortion, physical theatre and floor acrobatics with contemporary dance and break dance influences. Learning to be a clown has to be the most challenging module. I did not expect it to be a spiritual experience but it was. You are so
The same skills as it takes to be a successful artist in general. Dedication to and love of what you are doing, commitment to train and progress every day. Courage to take risks and try things that may fail, devotion to keep going throughout the tough times. Ability to adapt with the changing times, business skills, learning how to connect to new audiences and adapting your art to suit the digital age. Circus in particular is largely based on community and so keeping connected to your world-wide circus artist community but also inspiring and building new connections with all people. I have been so lucky to receive such a great response and support from the people of Cumbria. Tell us a little more about your involvement with Another Fine Fest which is coming up imminently. Another Fine Fest is one of my favourite days of the year. I love it more than Christmas. This year I will bring talented artists home with me from the circus to give you the ultimate circus cabaret. They love to juggle, hoop dance, clown and play. and now for the first time in years we will also bring aerial hoop and trapeze to the streets of Ulverston. With a mix of contemporary, traditional, strange and wonderful acts you are in for a treat. What next for Matrix Circus? My next ventures for circus in Cumbria are hosting regular classes and workshops for adults, developing youth circus and creating shows with the local community for the community. My eventual dream would be that have a studio space just for this. www.matrixcircus.com info@ulverstonnow.co.uk

Local auctioneers 1818 have launched their own inquisition after two life size carvings of Spanish soldiers, or Conquistadors, were discovered at a house clearance near Ulverston.
The firm’s expert David Brookes says he has never seen anything like them in his 35 years of valuing antiques. What he does know is that they are a pair of 19th century carved wooden statues, modelled in the style of native Spanish Conquistadors, and possibly made in the Black Forest region of Germany. Standing just under 7-foot-tall, including detachable plinths, the bare-chested warriors are depicted wearing animal skins and a helmet. Mirroring each other, they hold clubs which rest on their shoulders. The bases are well decorated with animal
Peter Digs A Den, a children’s book by artist Kate Brunskill and author Amy Stretch-Parker, both from Ulverston, is the story of a small boy with a big idea. A boy, who with sheer determination and effort, digs a den large enough for his entire family and all their pets to sleep in. Set in Coniston, at the foot of the Old Man, the book is written in a simple poetic style and aimed at children aged 2 to 7. Amy and Kate has just launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding project to cover the costs of self-publishing their book. Once the target of £3,800 is reached they will take the finished book to local schools,
The statues will be sold at 1818 Auctioneers two day sale on Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 June at the firm’s saleroom at Junction 36, just off the M6. They are estimated to make between £3,000 and £5,000 but, says Mr Brookes, they could easily exceed that figure given how unique and wellmade they are. JUNE IN THE
Kitchen Garden WOODLAND CRAFTS AND TALES If you and your friends and family are looking for a day out with a difference, then head to Stott Park Bobbin Mill on the weekend of 24th and 25th June. Between 10am and 4pm on both days the Rusland Horizons scheme is putting on a programme of free events to celebrate its successes and discoveries so far and the work of its volunteers. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the scheme aims to help us understand our landscape better and to involve the community in restoring and maintaining this beautiful environment. The two days will feature demonstrations of traditional crafts, some of which you will be able to try. There will be a charcoal earthburn, hazel hurdle making, swill basket making, traditional bridge building, other greenwood crafts and dry stone walling, as well as an oral history installation, storytelling and short walks on local history and wildlife. Whilst enjoying some food and drink you can also take the opportunity to learn how you can get involved in the scheme as a volunteer. For more details, look out for adverts and posters or go to www.ruslandhorizons.org, where you will also find information on their exciting apprenticeship programme.

- NEXT DEADLINE 9 JUNE 2017 th
There are lots of things to do in June, so if you like pottering and tinkering about in the garden, this will be one of your favourite months of the year. The colours are fabulous, like the intense green foliage, the multitude of vibrant and beautiful blooms and of course there are plenty of fresh vegetables to eat. In the kitchen garden, the tomatoes will require daily attention, you’ll be pinching out the side shoots, tying up the stems and feeding the plants once the first truss is setting fruit. Cucumbers will be similarly needy too! Keep earthing up potato plants and start harvesting the first earlies which are usually ready about now if you planted them about 10 weeks ago. Salad leaves will be in abundance in June and they are so fresh and tasty at this time of year. Pea shoots, chives, spring onions, celery leaves are also ready and make a lovely salad. You might also have some leafy greens like chard and perpetual spinach available too. Broad beans will be ready for harvesting towards the end of the month, as will the first peas if you are lucky! If you have space, keep doing successional sowings of carrots, French beans, Borlotti beans, sugar snap peas, radishes, beetroot, lettuce and other salad leaves. Now that the risk of frost has passed, you’ll be able to plant out all the tender vegetables like courgettes, squash, tomatoes and sweet corn. As well as all the veg, you will also be harvesting some fruit like rhubarb, strawberries, redcurrants and possibly blackcurrants if the weather is warm enough! June is also the month of Ulverston in Bloom and the annual Ulverston Open Gardens event which takes place on 24 - 25 June 2017. Entry is £3.50 and programmes are available from Bargain Booze, Gilliam’s Tea Shop on Market Street and the Coronation Hall Box Office. Although we’ve finished lambing, we have four orphan lambs to feed 3 times a day. The weather has been glorious so we’ve been walking them out of the barn and into the garden in the daytime, so they have fresh grass to nibble on and sunshine on their backs. Having been pretty much focused on ewes and lambs for the past two months, and working 16-18 hour days, it’s been quite a struggle to find the energy for all the other jobs that need attention... and then we get sidetracked anyway! Last week, Tony came round with some fertilised goose eggs, so we’ve got two incubators running and 19 eggs slowly rotating for 28 days. We will ‘candle’ them soon to see if they’re developing. I have to say that it’s just magical to shine a torch on an egg and see a life developing in there. Over the last week, we’ve been taking
our cattle out. We have to keep most of them in over winter otherwise our fields would be mud baths with nothing green left for them to eat in spring. When we do let them out, it’s wonderful to see mature animals prancing playfully. For the calves, it’s a whole new world to discover. Not all our animals stay close to home - we do a lot of conservation grazing for various organisations. So, at the moment you can see some of our cattle at Hay Bridge Nature Reserve in Bouth and some on The Helm in Kendal which is owned by Friends of the Lake District. The pastures closer to home have to provide food for the coming winter; in the form of silage. It is time for the grass to grow thick, sweet and full of goodness. Beginning of May the launch of a public fundraising appeal took place at YMCA Lakeside, Newby Bridge. The YMCA is going to create a new state of the art school facility at Lakeside, at a cost of £6.8M. The new facility will support the YMCA in their work with children from schools around the county as well as disadvantaged children. The fundraising appeal is for the last £500,000 of the total cost. The day and residential programmes are already making a difference to more than 7000 children and young people who currently visit YMCA Lakeside each year. Guests from local companies, the local community and The High Sheriff of Cumbria, Mr Alistair Wannop, were invited to tour the site which is already one of the largest professional outdoor activity centres in the country. The guests were then treated to a demonstration by Dowdales School pupils
undertaking an obstacle course, zip wire and crate stack activity.
Afterwards guests gathered in front of the jetty where schoolchildren from Greengate Junior School, Barrow handed a flag to the President of YMCA Fylde Coast Ian Paterson and Chief Executive John Cronin to declare the fundraising appeal formally launched by the raising of the flag and cutting of a ribbon. Sam Rayner, Chairman of Lakeland and a member of YMCA Lakeside Sub Committee formally thanked those present and asked them to consider ways in which they could support the fundraising appeal. SPORTS & LEISURE
A season to reflect for Paul Cox and Barrow AFC After a season which promised so much, Barrow AFC supporters were left feeling a sense of disappointment after the Bluebirds missed out on a chance of promotion to the Football League. Despite finding themselves in a play-off place for the majority of the season, Paul Cox and his players will be left frustrated, after a loss of form at a crucial part of the season. A magnificent 20 game unbeaten run saw them seemingly in an ideal position leading into the New Year, but their form in the latter months of the campaign, was
indifferent throughout. Arguably the one aspect of the season which will frustrate Cox and the supporters the most, was the inability to perform against so called ‘lesser’ sides. Defeats against York and Southport, both whom were eventually relegated from the division, subsequently cost them dear. Although the Bluebirds have shown a clear progression this season and a 7th place finish is more than respectable, Cox, the players and supporters alike will be left with a feeling of what might have been.

It is hoped the new network will open up cycling around the Bay to a wider range of people such as those who are new or returning to cycling, and those who lack confidence or feel that their fitness is not up to exploring the area on a traditional bike. Furness Firecrackers’ have found a new home! After a challenging two years, two popular roller derby teams have found a new home at GLL/Better’s Ulverston Leisure Centre. The centre’s tennis building is now giving them a regular training venue and scope for future expansion and new members. The Furness Firecrackers formed with a women’s team in late 2010 and had gone from strength to strength with the addition of a men’s team, The Barrow Infernos. Rebecca Jones, Chair of The Furness Firecrackers said “Both the Firecrackers and the Infernos have now completed training sessions in our new venue, excited does not describe how we are feeling! Our first new intake session has taken place with over fifteen skaters joining us. We have also booked Better, Kendal Leisure Centre for May 28th
to host our first home game in two years. The future for the League looks great and we always welcome new players!” GLL Partnership Manager for South Lakeland, Derek Jones said, “This was a great opportunity to work with local teams to ensure they could remain sustainable and continue with the successful development of roller derby in the borough. Hopefully we’ll soon see some more league wins and further international players very soon!” Further details on the game and joining the League can be found on their facebook page @furnessfirecrackers

“Cumbria Rugby Union are casting their net far and wide to provide participation opportunities for males and females, old and young” says Liam Nicholls, England Rugby Development Officer for Cumbria. A recent growth and dedicated support in the Women’s and Girls Game coupled with the development of several ‘Touch Rugby’ Centres has meant that chances to ‘have a go’ have never been greater. Liam continues “Whether contact rugby, a slow introduction via touch rugby or purely the health and fitness benefits of the latter, there is something for everyone. Rugby is a game for all shapes and sizes and with the touch offer the health and fitness benefits are excellent, plus the non-contact nature means that it can be mixed ages and gender and many clubs run family touch sessions through the summer months.” Speak to Garry Holmes, your local community coach for Barrow and South Lakes, if you are interested in getting involved, 07545 921 474 or see www.englandrugby.com

“The Life and Times of a Sewer Rat”, was the title of a talk given to members of the Inner Wheel Club of Ulverston by Mr.Geoff Wood at the April meeting. Mr. Wood was welcomed and introduced by President Charlotte Wills. Members were somewhat apprehensive about the talk when hearing the title but the majority enjoyed a most interesting and informative talk about the history of sewers, drains and toilets.
