Will the Lund Farm Development get a Green Light?

Market Hall VIP Follow the footsteps to the new Visitor Information Point (VIP), which opened in Ulverston Indoor Market Hall on Thursday 22nd March, just in time for the Easter holidays.

Last July, SLDC Planning refused Oakmere Homes permission to build another 106 houses at their Lund Farm site.

Since the closure of the SLDC run TIC in the Coronation Hall, it became clear that despite mobile phones and the internet. visitors still wish to talk to a real live person about the town. As a result, Ulverston Town Council, Ulverston Business Improvement District and Ulverston Community Enterprises have worked in partnership to make the VIP happen.

Oakmere Homes appealed the decision, and there will be a Public Inquiry before a Planning Inspector from Tuesday 15th to Thursday 17th May in the Coronation Hall starting at 10.00 am. This development aroused a great deal of local opposition, and anyone can attend the Inquiry and report, record or film the proceedings. At his or her discretion, the Inspector can also ask at the start of the Inquiry if anyone wants to speak. However, these Inquiries are very formal affairs, and the interested parties for both sides will have sent their case to the Inspector in advance.

Based in the Indoor Market Hall on New

But the most important VIP’s will be the volunteers from Ulverston who can talk in a friendly and knowledgeable way about

Inspectors are not keen on people repeating what they have already seen in writing, or on anyone giving new evidence without a watertight reason why it wasn’t sent before.

added: “I am very pleased

that our Indoor Market can address a need which the town has felt for several

years. Thanks to the BID and Town Council for

supporting this venture and

especially to the volunteers without whom this would never happen.”

Can Anything be Done? At their March meeting, Ulverston Town Council discussed if anything could be done to bring empty buildings in the town back into use. The former Stead and Simpson shop on King Street, Glynis House on Brogden Street, Robinson’s Brewery,

The Inspector will have been given these important points in more detail, and south Ulverston residents will probably hope that they will outweigh opposing arguments. NOW

Empty Buildings

In brief, the application was refused because it went beyond the land allocated, it would involve levelling limestone outcrops to create an artificial site, it did not contain the right amount of properly positioned affordable homes and, with the ongoing modelling by the Environment Agency, there was not enough evidence that the development would not increase flood risk in other areas close by.

could be developed. The council intends to write to the owners and landlords of such empty buildings to urge them to make use of them, and also plans to clarify what powers SLDC has to enforce action and ask them to use these powers.

Annual Boiler Servicing The law requires that all annual servicing and gas safety checks of gas appliances and boilers are completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer and an annual service can make all the difference in reliability, efficiency and household bills. Although brand new boilers generally come with a warranty of 5 years or more, the warranty can become void if you haven’t had an annual boiler service completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. To ensure that your new boiler installation by Wardgroup is running efficiently in the first 36 months and adheres to the terms of the warranty, we are providing 3 years FREE annual boiler servicing with every new installation before 30th April 2018. The FREE boiler servicing only extends to your new boiler, but our customers can add other gas appliances to the annual service, on request, at a reduced rate. What happens at a boiler service? Our Gas Safe engineer will remove the boiler casing to look at its components and check the boiler is working safely and efficiently. A good service includes checking: Correct gas pressure and flow Flue and combustion to make sure the boiler is burning the right mixture of gas and air. Electrical connections are clean and in good condition. Fans and other key components are working efficiently. Seals are intact. Electrodes are in a good condition. Safety devices are checked. Condensate trap and pipe is not blocked. MUGA on its way to Lightburn Park After 4 years of working with SLDC to gain improvements to Lightburn Park, Friends of Lightburn Park (FOLP) hope to see the new multi-use games area (MUGA) arrive from Sweden soon. Contractors have been appointed to install the MUGA on the lower tennis

court, and to resurface the upper tennis court, paint it for games and create a children’s safe cycle track. FOLP would like to thank Ellie’s Designer Florist @ Hillfoot for donating cyclamen, daffodils and iris bulbs to add to the tree stumpery and wildlife area, a welcome food and shelter haven for a whole

host of animals. FOLP work endlessly behind the scenes, gardening and looking for funding to improve the facilities in the park. If you would like to get involved, please contact Amanda. smith1968@aol.co.uk or Deborah Clarke@ southlakeland.gov.uk

The great beard shave was planned for Dec 27th 2017 in the Hope and Anchor pub. Christmas was over but Santa still fresh in people’s minds. Unfortunately, this Santa was admitted to hospital and the event was postponed until Jan 10th. But due to continued ill health it was postponed again until Feb 24th 2018. Without so much as a trim, the beard had continued to grow but Lee saw the delays as opportunities to raise more money. When people learned of the reason for the delayed fund raising event they were even more generous both in hospital and around town From 9pm, customers at the pub were invited to shave

swathes through the thick white 5 month old beard for a donation. Lee wasn’t expecting to have any hair left on his head by the end of the evening. He wasn’t disappointed. By 10pm he was fresh faced, bald and certainly feeling the cold but the NWAA had almost £600 winging its way to them. The NWAA is a charity founded in 1999 and relies entirely on donations from people like Lee to “take advanced healthcare to scene; reaching, treating and transferring patients to definitive care as quickly as possible to people in their time of need.” They attend more than 2,000 missions a year and on average 6 a day. £9 raised funds one minute of a NWAA mission. £13,500 could fuel one of the aircraft for a month. Lee says, “Thank you to all who have contributed and donations are still coming in. Knowing that the funds raised are going to such an excellent cause makes me feel that looking daft without hair for a few weeks is well worth it.”

Cumbrian Cadets

take on the Beast from the East

In March, 52 Army Cadets and 10 Adult Volunteers from Burma Company, Cumbria Army Cadet Force travelled to Warcop, near Appleby-in-Westmoreland, for a weekend of training and testing. As soon as they arrived on Friday night the snow began to fall, and it soon became clear that this would be no walk in the park. Temperatures fell below zero, snow fell to waist height and at times reduced visibility to just a few metres. But despite the challenges the cadets

pushed on with their training, demonstrating a remarkable resilience and determination to beat the elements. Burma Company’s cadets come from across South Cumbria, with units in Barrow, Dalton, Kendal and Millom. The cadets, who are 12-18 years old, parade 2 evenings a week at their local unit and take part in military and civilian training whilst gaining vocational qualifications in the process. They are trained by a group of committed adult volunteers from all sorts of background, including some who are ex-military and many others who are not. This weekend the new junior cadets undertook basic training in Navigation, First Aid, Weapon Handling and gained their first insights into life in a military training camp. Meanwhile the more senior cadets had their physical endurance, robustness and

leadership skills put to the test with challenging events such as Fieldcraft and Shooting on Warcop’s military training area. Burma Company’s Training Officer, Second Lieutenant Damien Mottram, had this to say, “Whilst the challenges of the weather caused some problems logistically, it also became an asset to the training. Each and every one of them should be proud of their achievements this weekend” Major Rachel Diss, Officer Commanding Burma Company, said: “The cadets benefit greatly from the diverse range of physical and mentally challenging activities they take part in.” Anyone aged 12-18 who may be interested in becoming an Army Cadet should visit www. armycadets.com for further information, or visit their local unit to have a look around. The Army Cadet Force is not part of the Armed Forces, it is

a youth organisation fortunate enough to be sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. Whilst cadets are introduced to the military way of life it is not a recruiting tool, and there is no call up or service liability, with cadets being free to leave at any time. The organisation could not exist without its adult volunteers, and Cumbria Army Cadet Force are always looking for anyone who may be able to give a couple of hours a week to support the training delivered. Whether you are ex-military, a parent or just a person who is looking for a fun and rewarding hobby we would like to hear from you. Please visit www. armycadets.com for further information, or contact Cumbria ACF Headquarters on 01228 516222.

Celebrating 30 Years of Ulverston Mind For 30 years Ulverston Mind has been supporting people with issues around their mental health, challenging the stigma around mental illness and promoting good mental health. From its office in Queen Street it takes support and opportunities out into the community with projects like its allotment and Connecting Mums, alongside its DropIns, Counselling and One to

One services. The charity is also looking forward to contributing to the Healthy Town initiative, a joint venture between public and private bodies to make Ulverston a healthier place to live and work. Look out for Ulverston Mind’s stall on the outdoor market on 10th May, where there will be information, people to talk to and cake, and for other celebrations through the year.

A Reader Asks...

Anyone for a Man Shed? A number of us would often like to have space, and possibly company, when we are involved in a hobby or craft. I have through friends managed to have the use of a shed. It is a good size having table and chairs, a wood burning stove to keep it warm in cold conditions, and it is watertight.

CAPTION

VOLUNTARY SERVICE

for Ulverston’s Interact Club In March, 10 members and 2 leaders of the newly formed Xenolith Interact club carried out a weekend’s service project at the Great Tower Scout Activity Centre, near Windermere. The Interact Club is the 14yrs to 18yrs section of Rotary International, sponsored by The Rotary Club of Ulverston and was formed last year within the Xenolith Explorer Scout Unit. The aim of the Interact Club is to carry out community service projects both locally and internationally. The members are also Xenolith Explorer Scouts so this work contributes to their Activity Centre Service and their Community Impact Awards.

During the weekend under the guidance of Explorer Scout Leaders Rowan Barton and Madigan Long the guys were involved in building a ‘natural path’ through some woodland at the bottom of the site then erected two huge mess tents.

I am asking if anyone in the Ulverston area would be interested in coming along for maybe a couple of hours or an afternoon a week in order to meet up with likeminded people. We often hear of people being short of company or would like something different to do: this could be an ideal opportunity. Two things may be a problem: it is on the outskirts of Ulverston

An important thing is, how much is this going to cost? Because of the generosity it will be a donation to cover the cost of gas for the kettle and logs for the fire. I think this has to be a good deal. So let’s get together and help to see if we can make it work. Also, it would be really good if we were able to attract a little funding for things like equipment or even a small electric generator. If anyone is interested in joining us, please call either Ron or Dave on 01229 231954 or 585961.

Bright Stars Shine

15yr old Matthew Haddow one of the club members said “It was a brilliant weekend, really really cold and hard work but great fun!” Bryan Caine Xenolith Explorer Scout Leader said, “This age group of young people who do this community work are very busy with exams and other interests yet they make time to carry out these major service projects and find them rewarding.”

(I am sure we could work something out) and has no electricity, which means being there in daylight hours. However, most tools these days are battery powered, and we are able to make a drink.

which will be split between buying resources for the

WINDERMERE ROWING CLUB

There is an impression that rowing is an elitist sport. A local club is proving just how wrong that is.

Formed in 2015, Windermere Rowing Club is based at Fell Foot Park on the southern shores of Windermere. A grant from Sport England purchased 2 coxed quads and 2 ancient singles were donated by another club. Spectacular growth since then now sees a club with a varied fleet of 13 boats with more on the way. We have 80 members, the vast majority of whom have learned to row with a club which prides itself on a friendly and inclusive atmosphere. Members come from all walks of life, the youngest being 18 with many well beyond retirement age. Black Combe Runners Junior Section

Black Combe Runners have created a new junior section for their running club. Training sessions are run each Wednesday at 6pm in Ford Park, Ulverston and last around half an hour. Sessions are run by two fully qualified coaches as well as other club volunteers. Parents are also welcome to stay and help out. If your child isn’t already a member they’re welcome to try out the sessions before they join. Training will be a variety of running sessions around Ford Park and Hoad and are always lots of fun. Juniors can also take part in our Junior Championships, comprising of 10 races throughout the year. The emphasis is on participation, not performance so a prize is awarded to anyone who completes 5 races or more. Membership is only £3! All ages and abilities welcome. ART & MUSIC

Music Venture of the Month

Dingo Barracks at Beerwolf Beerwolf has already proved very popular with the craft ale and beer loving fans of our town, offering a cornucopia of fine beverages from around the world and including several brewed just down the road at Ulverston’s own Stringer’s brewery. The intimate and atmospheric two floor establishment quite clearly has a passion for music as is evidenced by it’s eclectic daily playlists, and has in recent weeks begun to play host to a regular Sunday session, “Days of Unrest” hosted by local live music aficionados Dingo Barracks. We caught up with Dingo’s head honcho Dan Payne and Beerwolf’s main man Alan Munro to dig a little deeper. Hey Dan, why Dingo Barracks? You mean the name itself? Completely honest answer is that it’s random. The only thoughtful idea behind it was the initials of which when joined together make a pair of scissors. We thought this would be a cool logo to symbolise our DIY approach. How do you source the acts who you invite to play at your events? The majority of bookings come from just general research. Not to mention the fact that I’ve been playing in bands for SO LONG so in turn have met a great bunch of connections all over the place. Is there a signature sound or style that is associated with

DINGO BARRACKS

DB, or do you deal in a range of genres? What makes me excited about music is hearing bands or acts who play their own music and deliver it with truth and passion, almost like they’re not writing it for anyone other than themselves. If I had a signature it would be something to do with the mindset of the acts which often comes from people who play all sorts of genres. You also play drums for several local bands, how does the feeling you get from playing live compare to being the host and promoter of an event and seeing it in full swing? I don’t really get anxious or stressed before I play but with promoting and organising I do. I’d like to say that there is no feeling that would surpass that of playing drums live but when you pull off a successful show and manage it to the point that every little detail is as you planned, seeing the satisfaction on the faces of your audience, employers and acts you’ve booked... That comes close. Your drumming has taken you all over the country, how does Ulverston compare with regards to the reception you receive and its engagement with live music? Ulverston is actually great for a small town. I’ve always said to people who’ve never been that it’s like that part of the city you’re always trying to find. It seems like the residents of this town are just so interested in hearing something fresh and exciting that it broadens your scope of potential bookings. What is the best venue that you have been involved with as a promoter and why? I’d have to say the shows I’ve enjoyed the most are the ones I’ve put on in Ulverston and I’m not just saying that. There’s just something about

the enthusiasm of the people that makes it so much more rewarding. The Riot Jazz Brass Band and Honeyfeet shows I put on at the Coronation Hall obviously stick in my mind but I’m really enjoying this Beerwolf residency too because it’s a different challenge with it being quite regular. What led you to Beerwolf and how is it working out as a venue for your events? Alan asked me if I’d be interested in running some live music shows and once we started talking about the kind of music we’d like to have on in there, there was no doubt in my mind that we would work well together. I actually love the venue, it’s a decent size and it’s got a lot of character. On a more successful night with it being so small it can get a bit of a nightmare logistically but that’s all part of the fun. Any particular highlights we should look out for in the coming weeks? The show I’m most excited about is SLING plus support on May 13th. It’s a side project of Honeyfeet and they’re such a groovy and cool Blues band. If there’s only one you want to get to in the coming months make it that one. Alan - how would you review Beerwolf’s first six months and your more recent partnership with Dingo Barracks? We have had a fantastic first few months at Beerwolf and have enjoyed spending time

with some of the most friendly customers you could hope for. Ulverston has shown real enthusiasm for quality beer and we have been delighted to showcase beers from some of the world’s best breweries such as Cloudwater and Mikkeller. The partnership with Dingo Barracks has been great and has really helped to raise awareness of our venue to a much wider public. Alan - Do you have any other events in the pipeline, music or otherwise? We are looking forward to a few tap takeover and meet the brewer sessions in the bar with some of the UK’s most exciting breweries. We are also in early stages of planning a film club night that we hope to launch within the next couple of months. Alan - Have you noticed any of the people who come for the live music, coming back for a drink through the week? Do events help build a following for your establishment? The events have definitely improved awareness of the bar especially with people who have travelled from further afield. We have seen a number of people who have attended the gigs are revisiting us throughout the week. We see events and festivals (not just music) as crucial in the ongoing development of Beerwolf. Read about Dingo and Alan’s plans for another FineFest on the Ulverston Now website.

A NIGHT AT THE MUSICALS UVHS Performing Arts staged another stunning annual production on the 15th & 16th March at The Coronation Hall. Involving over 70 students.

‘A Night At The Musicals’ was a compilation show of songs from Broadway and The West End spanning the last 95 years - some well known, like ‘Mamma Mia’, ‘Shrek’, ‘Hairspray’ and ‘The Addams Family’, others not so, like ‘Oh, Kay!’, ‘Dear Evan Hansen’, ‘Porgy And Bess’ and ‘In The Heights’. The full cast opened and closed the show with the title song to the show ‘Fame’, with brilliant choreography from Miss Bird, who also put together an awesome dance routine to music from ‘A Chorus Line’ for members of the Dance Club - both numbers leaving the audiences in amazement. The full cast also performed songs from ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘Me And My Girl’. In between these ‘massed’ numbers, students were given the freedom to split into smaller groups and both select and then choreograph their own scenes from shows, also including ‘Hercules’, ‘Matilda’ and ‘Hamilton’. In between, some of our senior

FESTIVAL HITS RIGHT NOTE ONCE MORE If ever there was any doubt of the competitiveness of brass bands in Cumbria, the South Cumbrian music festival is always a timely reminder. The annual event, which is held at the Coronation Hall in Ulverston, was a brilliant opportunity again to showcase brass players of all ages. Ulverston Town Band, led by Mitch Rowlandson, retained the Ulverston Town Band Shield, with a comprehensive victory against Dalton Town Band, 89 points to 83.

World Record Time Again! Two years ago 1,180 of you gathered together on Ford Park to splat your way to a World Record for the Largest Ever Shaving Cream Pie Fight. Now it is again time to get in another fine mess for Another Fine Fest, Ulverston’s festival of comedy, music and art celebrating our most famous son, Stan Laurel. Stan was a veteran of flour flinging for comedy effect in the black-and-white days. Now in 2018 we’ll be whipping-up a slapstick storm with a rainbow

paint party in the style of the Indian festival of Holi, whilst simultaneously attempting to break not just one, but 5 world records, one for each year of AFF’s existence! Such a fine party requires an equally fine soundtrack so who better to provide the musical score than UIverston’s own DJ collective, Natural Selectas. As we let the non-toxic coloured-cornflour fly, we’ll be taking on a series of partythemed World Records The World’s Largest Game of Musical Statues

The Largest Gathering of People Tying Bow Ties The Largest Gathering of People Wearing Conical Party Hats The Largest Gathering of People Wearing Odd Socks The Longest Selfie Relay If we bag that lot, we’ll be well on our way to claiming the ultimate title, the town with the most number of World Records! If you would like to be a record breaker and to be honest, who wouldn’t(?!), keep your eyes glued on AFF’s Twitter and

Facebook for news of how to sign up and become a part of history in the making. If you are a company that would like to support the event, there is also the opportunity to sponsor one of the records taking place or if you would like to contribute via AFF’s crowdfunding campaign, you could even purchase the honour of rocking the loudspeaker to mark the start of each attempt! Again check out AFF’s social media or mail anotherfinefest@gmail.com for more information on all of the above.

Who’s IN A unique membership of professions and trades, InGroup prides itself on skills and service, experience and expertise. It includes long-established businesses, as well as imaginative newcomers.

Independent Networking Group

With links to Beatrix Potter, Temple Heelis Solicitors is soon to celebrate its 200th anniversary. Family firm FMB Financial Management Bureau started at a kitchen table and now boasts a global client base, with £250 million under its supervision. Former police detective Adrian Barker has seen his South Lakes Services brainchild grow to 200 staff, 500 clients and an annual turnover almost reaching £3 million. MBE Accountants have clients stretching from Canary Wharf to the Bahamas and reduced one tax claim from £18K to £3K, while historic building experts, Crosby Granger Architects, work on some of the country’s outstanding structures. Our businesses are run by driven professionals. Meet the members and see what we can do for you on http://www.ingroup.org.uk/members/

Networking group hails £3m success

InGroup chair Chris Granger

A BUSINESS force to be reckoned with is at large in South Lakeland, generating well over £3 million pounds for its members and helping countless good causes. Independent, inspirational, intuitive, InGroup Kendal was set up in 2013 with a determination to be one of the area’s most respected and sought-after referral organisations. Taking just one high-calibre member from each profession or trade, the aim of attracting some of the best people in their fields continues to be realised, according to chair Chris Granger. The Kendal-based architect said InGroup’s remarkable growth and success was easy to plot, based on a combined passion for cutting-edge service, quality, best possible results and maximising opportunities. He added: “We celebrate being local and operating in the heart

of our community. However, many members have national, even international clients, so the scope of what we do and how we do it is enormous. “With a strong sense of camaraderie, trust and shared commitment, members pass work to each other, knowing each and every job will be expertly handled. Our people are well-connected and extensive commissions keep coming our way.” Meeting every Friday for a breakfast gathering at Kendal Golf Club, members pass work referrals round the table and tally up invoiced work for the week. The biggest single seven-day total was over £74,000. A regular stream of speakers

and visitors attend. According to Chris, it helps keep the group up to speed with wide-ranging issues and local charities.

Reaching out He added: “We’ve always wanted to reach out to help and encourage others and build a positive profile for InGroup. Being one of South Lakeland’s best-kept secrets is certainly not part of the remit. “We want to be out there with the public knowing who we are and what we do.” So far, around £6,000 has been donated to charity, help given to Kendal flood victims, a bursary scheme rolled out at Kendal College and over £3 million generated to date supporting South Lakeland’s economy. “Unlike other networking groups, we are not hidebound by franchise, meaning we are free to go our own way and that has been the cornerstone of our success,” said Chris. “We have 23 members, are always keen to welcome new interest and especially work commissions. There’s a huge sense of dedication and determination to do well. The future is rosy, it’s onwards and upwards for InGroup Kendal.”

Netting will protect soft fruit from birds and brassicas from cabbage white butterflies.. Dealing with slugs, especially in a wet summer, is not so simple. I once lost every courgette plant, and I’ve never found beer traps that effective. Sprinkling cat litter around plants I really want to save has worked, as has setting plants off in pots, and only putting them in the ground once they are large enough to cope with a few bites. For creepy-crawly pests in general, planting marigolds among vegetables is said to help, since they attract hoverflies and wasps which go on to eat cabbage white caterpillars and aphids. Marigolds are also reputed to be death to eel worms. The general principle seems to be don’t be too tidy: if you keep a small wild patch near your vegetable beds it will harbour prey species which in turn will attract predators.

Vegetable gardening can sometimes be an uphill struggle, combating uncooperative weather and little creatures which want to eat your plants. Growing your own is not only about saving money, but you don’t want your crop to be eaten before it gets big enough for you to enjoy. However, being a horticultural terminator, spraying pesticides everywhere and garnishing your plot with a layer of conventional slug pellets, is probably not the best solution. Once you start using pesticides you have to continue when pests return, and you are in danger of killing off helpful insect predators. There are other ways to combat unwanted diners. After years of my peas being nearly destroyed by pea weevils, I now sow them later. The weevils are fewer and the peas grow faster, soon outpacing their attackers.

beavers will affect migratory fish like trout, yet their reintroduction is unlikely to arouse such passions as the now quite serious proposal to reintroduce wolves to Scotland to control red deer numbers. Beavers are never tempted to go after livestock, or to howl at the moon, scaring walkers who are out late.

they have a positive effect on their surroundings. They only build dams if the water of a stream isn’t deep enough for them to swim in, and these dams are usually temporary and not completely watertight. By moving around streams and rivers and building new dams, beavers help to create a range of different habitats for other species, and their thinning out of trees like hazel and willow encourages new growth which supports insects and birds. Even though beaver dams might be a bit leaky, they hold water in dry spells, and when it does rain torrents they can slow the flow, so helping to reduce flooding and soil erosion. There is a question mark over how the presence of

The other side of the coin is the successful reintroduction of native birds and animals which were either on the brink of extinction or had died out completely. Birds like ospreys and red kites can now be seen once more, and one particular animal is returning from the pages of history books and of the Chronicles of Narnia. The Eurasian beaver was wiped out in Britain in the 16th century, after it had been hunted down for its fur and meat and for its peculiar glandular secretion,

‘castoreum’, which was used in medicines and perfumes. Now small numbers of this toothy, vegetarian, familyminded large rodent can be found in Argyll, in the catchment of the River Tay and on the River Otter in Devon. Although those on the Tay and Otter slipped the net of a carefully managed licensed trial reintroduction and were either accidental or intentional unlicensed releases, officialdom has caught up with them, and they are protected but are to be monitored and managed. Some landowners might balk at the thought of beavers gnawing down their trees and damming their rivers. However, many environmentalists believe that

FESTIVAL TIME IS HERE ANOTHER FINE FEST IS 5!

And Stan Laurel would be 128! In order to commemorate this fact, on June

16-17th, Ulverston will once again erupt in a multicolured feast of live music, DJs, circus, street theatre, live street art, window painting, yarnbombing, interactive workshops, comedy, spoken word and a cornucopia of various other weird and wonderful activities. How you can get involved AFF positively encourages active engagement with its festival and there are many ways to participate including performing, creating, trading, donating, sponsoring, volunteering or record breaking. This really is your festival! Busker’s Zone Have you ever dreamed of performing in front of an audience but never taken your skills outside your bedroom? Well now is your chance to shine at this open mic session based outside the front of the Coro! You are invited to bring down your instrument, plug in and play. Local musical legend Chris Garratt of the Sad Eyed Puffins will host this area and provide the means for you to amplify your sound. You may even find some like minded musical souls to jam along with and start a band together! Window Painting - Glass as canvas Each year AFF teams up with a multitude of local businesses and artists to transform the streets into an open air gallery.

you like a window of your own to flex your creative talents upon? If the answer is yes, then get in touch! Traders The number of traders doubled last year and the festival is now looking for even more quirky stalls and tasty food vendors from our town, across our county and beyond to ply their wares and bring some added colour to the proceedings. If you do not have your your own stall or gazebo, then one can be supplied, and Ulverston based businesses can take advantage of half price rents. Email anotherfinetrader@ gmail.com Comedy Competition On 26th May at the Laurel and Hardy Museum, 20 acts will be battle it out to be crowned the King or Queen of comedy with the winner bagging a paid slot at Planet Mirth and an appearance at Another Fine Fest! Do you have what it takes to hold the audience in the palm of your hands, to respond quick fire to a heckle and to incite laughter with every sentence? Then your time has come! Sponsorship Another Fine Fest presents

- NEXT DEADLINE 27 APRIL 2018 th

invited to the celebrations. the perfect opportunity to align your brand with world-class arts in our town. Your funding will allow the festival to engage in a much more widespread marketing campaign (which you will become a part of) as well as develop the festival to attract the finest names to our doorstep. Your funding will also help to develop Sunday. Sponsorship opportunities start from just £200. Crowdfunding Future funding from grant giving organisations such as BID and the Arts Council is not guaranteed as the same project can not be supported continuously year upon year. Thus the public’s support is needed to make the festival a reality with crowdfunding being a vital source of financial support for the festival. In 2017, donations gathered via the funding site Indiegogo.com totalled £3375 and was made up of 143 donations. Festival organisers are calling upon the generosity of fine fest fans to help to at least double this amount. No donation is too small, if everyone that came to enjoy the festival could donate just a couple of pounds via Indiegogo, then the likelihood of subsequent

events happening would be guaranteed. Helping those that need it For the first time in 2017, AFF was able to collect much needed funds for a variety of local charities with £820 being collected in the buckets on the day. This amount was split four ways with a quarter helping to fund the following year’s event and the rest going to St Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston Mind and Furness Homeless Support Group. The more funding that the festival can generate, then the bigger and better the event can be, in turn attracting more people to our town and generating an increased amount of funds for said charities. Volunteering The festival is on the lookout for volunteers to help deliver all the action, to keep the crowds safe and to collect donations. Are you a friendly, confident and trustworthy individual that would like to help out? Folks with first aid certificates are particularly welcome but all help would be most gratefully received! For more information on any of the above please mail anotherfinefest@gmail.com

Militaria Auction Uncovers Local Wartime Story Our latest Militaria and Weapons auction included a letter and a series of four postal cards written in 1943 to a Miss Jess MacLennan of Silverdale. They were all penned on behalf of Lieutenant J Southard, who, having been caught out by a German patrol “with only my pistol”, had found himself in a

German hospital.

He describes one bullet as having passed through the right side of his temple, exiting on the left. And then goes on to say, “the other bullet is a much more serious matter” as it entered his stomach and did “a certain amount of damage to the old entrails and my hip”.

The postal cards from 1943 and 1944 confirm his recovery and weight gain and that he’s awaiting repatriation. Leaving us to wonder 55 years later whether his repatriation brought him back to Silverdale and Miss MacLennan? If only we had that answer on a postcard too.

Carol from Adgarley had root canal work at the dentist without injection, Dave from Barrow stopped itching in the sun, Sarah is no longer scared of snakes and Aisha gained the confidence to go for a dream job and get it. What do they have in common? They used Hypnosis to help them change for the better.

I have been teaching Hypnosis in Ulverston for over 10 years and work one-to-one too. If you wonder what hypnosis is like and want to experience it for yourself, come to our UKGHP Unconvention. It’s our 34th Annual meeting and our first in Ulverston. It is an ‘Unconvention’ because anyone can enjoy it, whether they have experienced hypnosis before or not. Over 3 days, join us in experiences

and events to help all of us change and enjoy life more. What kind of people are Hypnosis Practitioners? We’re the same as you! What’s different is that we discovered the fun that can be had and the magic you can experience using hypnotic trance. What does it feel like to be hypnotised? Very relaxing and calming; excellent to de-stress. It is like awake dreaming and, despite the impression stage hypnotists give, you are aware of what is happening during trance and cannot be hypnotised against your will. All hypnosis is really selfhypnosis.

Designer Dogs Are they for you? Founded in 1873, the Kennel Club is the oldest recognized kennel club in the world. Its primary aim is to protect and promote all dogs. In 2007 it recognised crossbreeds, or what the media refers to as the “designer dog.” Most of us have heard of the first designer dog popularised from 1988, the Labradoodle, bred to be a hypoallergenic guide dog. It’s a mix of the Labrador and poodle and is not hypoallergenic but does have characteristics that many appreciate. But have you heard of the Rat-a-Pap, Pookimo, Chigi or Schweenie? And can you guess which breeds have been crossed to create them? However, the Kennel Club is also concerned about crossbreeds, which are not a breed but a hybrid of two purebreds, for the following reasons: n unscrupulous breeders may breed these types of dog only for financial profit, without disregard for the dogs’ health and welfare. n to meet the latest celebrity-driven trend puppies my be massed produced to sell on

n buyers may be treating ownership of a designer dog as a fad and avoid an educated decision about what is right for them. “Buying a dog is a lifetime commitment and should not be purchased on a whim or to go along with the latest fashion.” n cross breeding may result in health problems if money is the primary goal. Responsible breeders undertake health tests prior to breeding a litter which should apply to any dog type. For example, a ‘Labradoodle’ is a cross between a Labrador and a Poodle. Both breeds can be susceptible to hip problems and crossing them will only exacerbate the problem.

n a designer’ dog may be less predictable than a purebred dog. The advantages of buying a pedigree dog include the predictability of specific breed traits including behaviour and temperament, care needs, and health predisposition. This gives the owner a better chance of understanding which breed will be best for them. Of course there are advantages in owning one of more than 200 hybrid fusions that exist. This means you can choose a pooch with the traits you desire eg reduced shedding of hair or a pocket sized pet. Whatever your opinion, it is important to remember that owning a dog requires commitment and has a financial implication. The next big point of contention in the dog owner’s world lies in the following question...should they be dressed up or not?

In Breakfast: Morning, Noon and Night, Fern Green encourages readers to enjoy their most-loved meal at any time of the day. One of her recipes for a savoury dish that you won’t be able to confine to just the morning hours is Smoked Salmon and Eggs with Capers & Quinoa Crackers.

Quinoa Crackers

It showcases two of our Low Sizergh Barn farm shop suppliers: Hodmedods, who work with British farmers to provide pulses and grains through fair and sustainable UK production, and, Inverawe Smokehouse, whose fish is slowly oak-smoked to give a true taste of the Highlands.

INGREDIENTS

SERVES 2

FOR THE QUINOA CRACKERS 160g (5.5oz) Hodmedods quinoa, soaked overnight in a covered bowl and drained 110ml (4floz) water ½ teaspoon sea salt 2 tablespoons olive oil METHOD

1. To make the crackers, preheat the oven to 180°C. Whizz the quinoa, water and salt in a food processor until you get a consistency like double cream.

FOR THE TOPPING 1 tablespoon capers Handful of sorrel leaves Olive oil for frying 4 Low Sizergh Farm eggs Salt and black pepper 1 apple (Granny Smith best) 50-75g (2-2.5oz) Inverawe smoked salmon

2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Dollop tablespoons of the mixture on to the baking sheet leaving 4cm in between to allow the crackers to spread as they cook.

3. Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden and crisp on the bottom. Flip each cracker over and bake for a further 5-10 minutes. 4. To make the topping, fry the capers and sorrel in a little olive oil until crispy, then drain on a piece of kitchen towel.

5. Whisk the eggs in a bowl and season. Add a little oil to a saucepan over a low heat and stir slowly until the eggs are just scrambled. Remove from the heat.

6. Serve the salmon, eggs and capers on a plate with the sliced apple on the side and use the crackers to scoop up tasty, smoky, tangy mouthfuls. info@ulverstonnow.co.uk

Ulverston BID Backs New VIP In an example of partnership working, Ulverston BID have joined with the Town Council and Ulverston Community Enterprises, who now run the markets, to create the new Visitor

Responsible Pet Ownership with Little Beasties With the current trend for exotic pets like snakes and lizards, unfortunately some people impulse buy reptiles from online sites or backyard breeders. If they find they can’t look after them properly, this is when Little Beasties can step in. The owner works with the RSPCA to re-house exotic

pets in responsible homes, and will not sell them until potential buyers have been checked out. Little Beasties visits nurseries, schools, youth clubs and groups like Cubs and Brownies not only to show children unusual animals but also to educate them in how to look after them, so that good pet-owning habits start young. However,

these visits are not confined to youngsters, since Little Beasties will also go to care homes, and work with adults with learning or physical challenges.

The rust is history We attended a property recently where the customer had asked us to clean all of the carpets in their home with the exception of the dining room; the reason they explained, was because of rust stains from metal table legs that a previous cleaning company had been unable to remove and they intended to replace that carpet. We asked the customer to let us try our process on it on a ‘no win no fee’ basis which they agreed to do. The results can be seen in the photos and as you might expect, the customer was delighted as it had saved them nearly £1,000 in replacement costs.

So if you have a carpet that you think can’t be ‘revived’ and are thinking of replacing it, give us a call first to see what we can do.

It could be a call that saves you ££££s We are a local, independent specialist carpet cleaning company. Utilising 21st century cleaning processes allied with state of the art equipment, we deliver exceptional results with carpets usually dry within 30 minutes of cleaning. We believe that our carpet cleaning system is probably the best currently available.

Bookshelf As Seen on TV Fans from all over the world have taken to Bardsea resident Denise le Breton’s cartoons featuring Sheldon, her Border terrier, as shown on ITV Granada Reports last year. Sheldon now has his own Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ sheldonbt, and here you can order copies of the two books of cartoons, ideal for dog-lovers of all ages.

The Golden Chrysanthemums Naomi Hudson Pixeltweaks Publications 2018 £7.99 from ‘Varykino’ in Ulverston Market Hall Naomi Hudson may still be a mystery to some readers, but there is no doubt she works hard to keep up with her growing number of fans. In her latest book she has certainly hit her stride, and tells us more about the Scarborough based detective characters from previous novels. Jelly baby-loving DI Don Bentley and his team race to solve the mystery of a serial killer targeting women in Whitby, a race with twists and turns and plenty of local colour.

Where the Wild Winds Are Nick Hunt Nicholas Brealey Publishing 2017 £16.99 from Suttons Books While we now name storms as well as hurricanes, these are temporary if destructive ‘weather events’. Other winds, though, have blown with great force through certain regions at certain times of year at least since humans have been around to endure or enjoy them and to create stories about them. We might have heard of one or two of these named winds, like the Mistral and the Sirocco, but this book opens our eyes to others, including the Helm, which blows down from the highest point of the Pennines into the Eden valley and which is Britain’s only named wind. Impressed by wind since he was blown off his feet as a six year old, and inspired by a map of Europe’s named winds, traveller Nick Hunt decided to walk on the trail of four of these winds. He chose the Helm itself, the north-easterly Bora which howls down to the Slovenian

and Croatian coast, the

southerly Foehn which comes up through the Alpine valleys of Switzerland bringing all manner of physical and

mental discomforts, and the

Mistral which hurls itself down through the south of France,

and is said to have been Van Gogh’s ‘wind of madness’. The result is a fascinating book which tells us of the

science and mythology of

winds, and shines a light on

parts of Europe off the tourist trail. Because he is walking most of the time, Nick Hunt

notices telling details of the land through which he is
