Coniston plans 50th anniversary tributes to Donald Campbell
Rare cat sighting in Lakeland
A series of events are being planned in the Lake District to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of speed record-chaser Donald Campbell. Campbell, 45, died when his Bluebird K7 boat somersaulted on Coniston Water during the second run of an attempt to break the world water speed record. The date was January 4, 1967, and it wasn’t until March 2001 that his body was recovered. He was buried in Coniston Cemetery in September 2001. Campbell, who broke eight world speed records on water, and on land, in the 1950s and 1960s, remains the only person to set both world land and water speed records in the same year (1964). On the fateful day he died he began his attempt when Bluebird took to the water at 8.45am, and this is the time on Wednesday, January 4,
A rare SS Jaguar 100, which epitomises 1930s speed and glamour, has gone on show at the Lakeland Motor Museum. MAIN: Bluebird K7 decelerating from very high speed during the first run on Coniston Water on 4 January 1967 INSET: Donald Campbell
2017 when RAF jets will do a flyover. At 11am a memorial service is planned at the Campbell Memorial in the village (opposite the Crown Hotel which was regularly frequented by Campbell), followed by prayers at his grave. The next day (Thursday 5 January) there will be
a showing of Campbell’s film How Long A Mile at Coniston Institute. On Friday 6 January there will be commemorations at Glenridding, where Campbell, in July 1955, set his first world water speed record on Ullswater in Bluebird (202.32 mph).

The sporty two seater was first manufactured in 1937 and fewer than 200 vehicles were ever made. In its day, the SS Jaguar 100 reached speeds of 100 mph – exceptionally fast in the 1930s, when many vehicles struggled to sustain 50mph. The car has been loaned to the Motor Museum by a Manchester couple with a strong affinity to the Lake District, after more than 60 years in continuous ownership. This particular car was tested by the Motor Magazine in May 1937, then by Autocar in July. It also completed the 1937 RAC rally, helping to win the manufacturer’s team prize. Chris Lowe, Manager at the Lakeland Motor Museum, says, “Many people regard the SS Jaguar 100 as one of the most eye-catching Jaguar cars ever made – it is certainly one of the rarest.”

Droning on, and on, and on...
Enjoying the peace and tranquility of the Lakes can sometimes be spoilt by a distant buzzing sound, however the male worker bee is not always to blame! These days it’s more than likely to be a remotecontrolled helicopterything….. a drone Drones are being used, more and more, to gain access to perspectives for photography and video filming that used to be the preserve of real helicopters. For commercial purposes, operators must have permission from the Civil Aviation Authority to fly a drone. Even some operators, like charities, who want to fly a device over a congested area or within 50m of a building may need permission and the “pilot” may need assessing for competence. Amateur droners must make sure that the unmanned aircraft is not flown beyond the normal line of sight of the

person operating it. Drones fitted with a camera must always be flown at least 50m away from a person, vehicle or building and not within 150m of a congested area or large group of people such as a sporting event or concert. Many of us may view them as a blot on the landscape or even a dangerous piece of apparatus invading our privacy, but they can be put to very good use. Mountain Rescue teams have trialled the use of drones in the search and rescue process. Their speed allows them to search much faster than teams on the ground, which can be critical, especially when injuries are severe or the weather conditions on the fells are particularly poor. Perhaps in the future, the sight or sound of a drone buzzing around the Lakes will bring an overwhelming sense of relief or even joy rather than annoyance!

NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2016 - NEXT DEADLINE 3rd FEBRUARY
We know about Queen Adelaide and the hill named after her in Bowness, but she was just a day visitor. Did you know Windermere had it’s very own Princess, about 250 years ago? Picture now the quiet, pretty village of Finsthwaite nestling in the wooded hills near Lakeside at the southern tip of Lake Windermere. The village boasts Stott Park Bobbin Mill and High Dam Tarn, some ancient woodland and breath-taking scenery. It’s typical Lake District, with its abundance of dry stone walls and narrow winding lanes. However, Finsthwaite is steeped in some extraordinary history. In a quiet corner of the little churchyard there is the grave of a young woman called Clementina Johannes Sobieski Douglass (or Douglas) believed by many to be the illegitimate daughter of the young pretender, Bonnie Prince Charlie as he was more commonly known. Clementina, regarded as a “quite grand lady” by all her knew her, lived at Waterside, which still stands near Newby Bridge and died in 1771 at the age of 24. Over the years people have believed that she was Bonnie Prince Charlie’s daughter, by his mistress Clementina Walkenshaw and was named after Charlie’s mother, Princess Maria Clementina Sobieska, granddaughter of
Save the Children shop celebrates long service The team of volunteers from Save the Children’s shop, on Crescent Road, Windermere held a tea party last month to celebrate long service from several members of the team.

King Johannes of Poland. Although there is no documentary evidence of such a daughter, Douglas was an alias known to have been used by Bonnie Prince Charlie. The strongholds of Jacobitism were parts of the Scottish Highlands and the Lowlands NorthEast of Scotland, Ireland, and areas within Northern England. In 1745 a battle took place between Charlie’s retreating forces and the English at Eamont Bridge, near Penrith. It does seem possible that he would be very familiar with the Lake District. A man of great passion for the cause, this emotion ran deep as he was known to have numerous affairs and dalliances. Whether Clementina was Bonnie Prince Charlie’s daughter or not will never be proved but this romantic story gives us a sense of our place in history
and 18th century Britain. Bonnie Prince Charlie was indeed an incredibly important historical figure. Professor Zon from Durham University’s Music Department believes that he was the inspiration for the Christmas Carol ‘Oh Come All Ye Faithful’ and that originally the lyrics “Come and behold him born the King of Angels” actually refer to the Divine Right of Kings, a firm belief held by the Jacobites. All the lyrics can be dissected and linked to the exiled King and the restoration of the British throne.
Three volunteers, Eva Alexander, Jean Tolson and Margaret Turner have given their time and support for an incredible 50 years, Hilary Sharpe has volunteered for over 40 years and Edwina Saunders for 35 years. Many other members of the team celebrated service of between 10 and 25 years. What a team. The success of Save the Children in
Windermere is very much due to local support and the team would like to thank the local community for it’s ongoing donations and custom. The shop is run entirely by volunteers, If you have any spare time on your hands, as little as 3½ hours a week, and may be interested in joining our team please pop into the shop for a chat.
This Christmas when you hear one of the best known carols in British history, spare a thought for the little Lakeland churchyard surrounded by yew and holly trees, where lies a legend, perhaps our very own Jacobite Princess.
Ten years ago Ambleside Parish Centre was opened by Tim Farron, a little over a year after the rookie MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale was elected to the House of Commons. In September he was back at the centre to mark its ten years of growth and development a big event was held featuring centre users, cake, friends of the centre, cake, representations of organisations, cake... did we mention cake? And cava, too, to toast “a decade of amazing progress”, according to centre manager Helen Minton. “Tim made three key points in his speech,” she said. “That the Lake District was the centre of universe; that Ambleside was the centre of the Lake District; and that Ambleside Parish Centre was the centre of the centre! Which was very lovely of him to say.” “We would like to thank him very much for spending so much time with us – he’s a busy man and it was very much appreciated.”
Stonewalling
Windermere Town Council heard that the plans to upgrade Ellerthwaite Square in Windermere have come up against a slight obstacle. Cumbria County Council claim that because of tendering rules they cannot choose a skilled stonewalling contractor over a highways contractor to create flower-beds in the new scheme. This same problem occurred in Waterhead when the new stonewalling attracted a great deal of adverse comment. info@windermerenow.co.uk

Grave in Rusland Church yard
A major exhibition is being planned for next year at Coniston’s Ruskin Museum to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of children’s author Arthur Ransome. Ransome, who wrote the Swallows and Amazons series of books, died at hospital in Manchester on June 3, 1967 and is buried, with his second wife Evgenia, in the churchyard of St Paul’s, Rusland. Evgenia was the secretary of Leon Trotsky whom Ransome met while
he lived for four years in Russia covering the events of the 1917 revolution for the radical British newspaper the Daily News. And it’s the 100th anniversary of the Revolution next October that will also add interest to the exhibition, said Ruskin curator Vicky Slowe. “Ransome’s literary career as well as his early interest in politics will both be reflected in the exhibition,” she told Windermere Now. It is likely to open in May and last for several months.

“Go Herdwick” went very wool
An innovative tourism and art project has raised funds for the rehabilitation of patients recovering from brain injury and stroke. Low Wood Bay Resort Hotel in Windermere played host to the Go Herdwick grand auction of 60 highly decorated, life-size model sheep. Businesses and organisations from across Cumbria originally sponsored the flamboyant flock, with the fibreglass
models of the Herdwick ewe transformed by artists and prepared for display over the summer along the bus route from Kendal to Keswick. The sell-out auction, conducted by Harrison & Hetherington who are, fittingly, farmstock auctioneers, was held to support local charity, the Lake District Calvert Trust. Over 250 people purchased tickets for the event and with bids for each fantasy ewe expected to exceed £1,250, several bidding wars broke out throughout the evening. The highest successful individual bid was for £20,000 which secured the purchase of ‘Parker’ (pictured) by Mandy Allan, “Burly” fetched £5,500 and, even at 14th in the league table,
“Wanda” went for £3,600. The auction raised over £250,000. Nevil Jeffery, general manager, said: “If you had told me before the Go Herdwick project existed that the hotel would be hosting an indoor auction for 60 sheep, I would not have believed it. It’s been a really creative way to bring local businesses together, promote the Lake District and raise funds for a worthy cause. And there’s been a lot of competitive fun along the way.” Go Herdwick was an inspirational project. The final proceeds from the auction will go towards the £1.3 million renovation of a Calvert Trust site in Keswick and will provide essential rehabilitation for stroke victims and those who have suffered brain injuries.
Cumbria day
A new event, known as ‘Cumbria Day’ will be held in Parliament on 6th December, sponsored by the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership. The event will be an opportunity, to showcase Cumbria to Parliamentarians. Cumbria Day is being jointly hosted by all six of Cumbria’s MPs: Jamie Reed, Tim Farron, John Stevenson, John Woodcock, Rory Stewart and Sue Hayman. Each MP has nominated three businesses to represent their constituency on the day. The three local producers invited by Tim were Bowness Bay Brewery, Grasmere Gingerbread, and W.McClure wholesale foods. “Local businesses work hard to support the Cumbrian economy and create jobs, and this year has been a particularly challenging one due to the devastating floods last winter. I am pleased to help organise this important national networking opportunity which will help to showcase Cumbrian produce to a new audience.”

Wainwright remembered
“Encounters with Wainwright” is a book that contains 120 stories of people who met or knew Alfred Wainwright, from 75 years ago in Blackburn through to his final days in Kendal in 1991. These first-hand memories of Wainwright, most of them not previously published, show Wainwright as he really was – a more complex and endearing figure than often portrayed. This entertaining and informative book results from three years of detailed research and detective work by David Johnson, editor of The Wainwright Society’s magazine, Footsteps. All profits from the book are being donated to Animal Rescue Cumbria, the charity that Wainwright supported passionately. The proceeds will be used for the ongoing work at Kapellan, the charity’s animal shelter at Grayrigg, near Kendal. Pictured here is the first cheque presentation, for £2000, recently made by David to Amanda Nicholson, the Manager of Kapellan. Further instalments will follow as books are sold. Amanda said “Encounters with Wainwright is a wonderful book, brilliantly researched and produced by David. I’d recommend it to anyone, not just those

interested in Wainwright. It will make a great gift for Christmas, too. Many of the stories of AW are humorous and I particularly enjoyed reading about the way the AGM used to be conducted at Animal Rescue Cumbria back in Wainwright’s time! The trustees, staff, volunteers and, of course, all the animals in our care are extremely grateful to David and The Wainwright Society for donating the profits, and are delighted and honoured by this.” The book is available from the Wainwright Society’s website www.wainwright. org.uk/encounters-withwainwright or at various local outlets. Windermere Town Council Autumn is the time when the Town Council reassesses its priorities for spending in the next financial year. This is done with reference to the Windermere and Bowness Community Plan, which represents residents’ interests. Next year, the Town Council wants to make sure that local community organisations and events are fully supported and is looking to increase funds that are on offer. This year, financial support has gone to the Winter Lights, the Youth Project, the Town Twinning Association and South Lakes Citizen’s Advice Bureau. There has also been
support for St Cuthberts School, the Marchesi Centre and the Christmas Market. In addition, a number of grants of up to £500 have been made to local businesses, to help with improving shop fronts and keep the high street looking attractive. If your community group or event is in need of financial support, it is always worthwhile approaching us for assistance. An application form can be downloaded from the website or alternatively contact the Clerk for more information. A few local projects that have been given the “green light” are new planting
and renovation of the Ellerthwaite Square island, new play equipment for the Langrigge Play area and new bus shelters for Troutbeck Bridge. We hope to see them all come to fruition through the winter – watch this space for progress! Finally, you may see the Town Steward, Gary, out and about with a large squidgy mop. He is doing the bi-annual cleaning of the road and street signs, before winter sets in. Give him a smile – it is a dirty job! And a reminder that our next meeting is on 14th December, starting at 7pm in Langstone House. Our agendas and minutes can be found on our website.

David’s first day in his part-time job involved promoting the opening of the new Hawkshead outdoor gear shop in the town, and he was suitably attired in a town crier-like outfit “I borrowed that from Grasmere Players” and the Ambleside Town Crier bell “I had to borrow that as well,” he said.

Tim’s Column I have been putting as much pressure as I can on Northern Rail to get them to reintroduce their discounts for school students aged over 16 travelling on trains from Windermere or Staveley to school or college in Kendal. If you haven’t been keeping up with this story until this year Northern Rail offered students a discount on their season tickets when they reached the age of 16 even though, under rail ticket rules, this is the age when they start to pay adult fares. Given everyone has to stay in education of some form until they are 18 these days it doesn’t make any sense and ultimately it is usually the parents who end up footing the bills anyway. Understandably when it was removed a lot of parents were rightly angry as in many cases it has led to fares quadrupling to £1,000 a term. I presented a petition signed by over 300 parents to Parliament calling on Northern Rail to change their minds. So far Northern Rail have been reluctant to budge on their plans but if we keep the pressure up I am hopeful that some solution can be found. I have also been pressing the Government to refund the £17,000 our mountain rescue teams incurred in costs and damaged equipment during Storm Desmond last December. I think it would be a great great sign of gratitude and thanks from the Government if they recompensed the teams for their costs. I have put a motion to Parliament expressing my thanks and asking the Government to pay out the £38,000 that all the Mountain Rescue Teams nationally spent as a result of the flooding. I hope you have a brilliant Christmas and New Year, thanks for all your support during 2016. If there is anything I can do to help you please do email tim@ timfarron.co.uk or call 01539 723403. My office will be closed from the 23rd December until the 2nd January but if you leave a message over that period we will get back to you as soon as we are back at work. Happy Christmas, Tim

SCHOOL REPORT
Open water swimming fun for Grasmere School Every year Grasmere School children learn how to be safe and have fun swimming in open water. In the summer of 2016 Lancaster film-maker, Janine Bebbington of Gorgeous Media, worked with the swimmers to catch it all on film. What appeared was sheer joy in The Summer Long. A film which lets us see and hear what happens when children are encouraged to explore their physical world. It is a visual poem, narrated by the children of Grasmere School, using the words
of Grasmere poet William Wordsworth to celebrate the beauty of their lake and their experiences in it. At Grasmere School, the aim is to instill resilience – children who are confident, brave, positive, hopeful, creative, curious, loving and happy! It’s a mix of academic learning, playing in the woods,

Sizergh-based mental health charity Growing Well have supported the project along with Zeffirellis Cinema, Ambleside, where the world premier of The Summer Long was held in November. The film won plaudits at the Kendal Mountain Film Festival and may be seen at www.gorgeousmedia. co.uk/the-summerlong-1
Houses of Parliament and a sleepover on HMS Belfast. Not to be outdone, Years 3 & 4 visited St Catherine’s Wood in Windermere to take part in a workshop about The Stone Age. They enjoyed a range of activities including making axes and sling shots. The Harvest Festival took place in Hawkshead Church where there were delightful singing and fabulous performances around harvests past present and future. A Macmillan Coffee Morning was held in school afterwards, which was well attended by families and local residents. An autumn walk with the whole school took a trip around the lovely Blelham Tarn in Wray. This was followed by a picnic and activities in the grounds of Wray Castle.
Hockey skills masterclass at Windermere School October saw Windermere School students welcome Team GB hockey ace David Ames, for a coaching masterclass. The morning session saw the younger students put through their paces, culminating in a number of small games. The afternoon session gave some of the senior students the chance to improve their hockey skills, with particular focus on shooting.
Windermere School student, Olly Thomas plays for the school’s U16 Hockey Team and was buzzing after the coaching session; “We had a fantastic day. It was great to experience the type of drills professional players experience on a daily basis in their training sessions. It was hard work, but well worth it. Hopefully our results will reflect the effort we’ve put in today.” David Ames emailed
the school after he had returned home, expressing his satisfaction: “Thanks very much for yesterday. Had a great day yet again! The kids are a pleasure to work with.”
St Cuthbert’s Primary
Last term, every child in the school from Ks1 upwards was given the opportunity to attend after school clubs at the National Trust’s Footprint Building. Every club session in the woods gave children freedom as they explored nature and had fun making their woodland follies! The sessions were a great opportunity for children to develop their problemsolving and language skills exploring the environment they worked in. “It is great to see children of all ages mixing together and working sympathetically with each other and in collaboration to realise some wonderful art, sculpture and bush craft work.” St Cuthbert’s Primary School is working hard to develop the very best opportunities for children working in partnership with other groups and agencies. As the clubs draw to a close as the nights draw in, the children will be leaving behind some interesting faces watching over the woodland and Footprint building whilst returning to school with some great artwork and bushcraft for their school.
Ambleside Primary Ambleside Primary”s Early Years class had a fantastic visit behind the scenes at the Apple Pie Café in Ambleside in November. The children had a wonderful time learning lots about the baking methods and the huge hot ovens and had great fun wearing their aprons and hairnets, finding out about hygiene and safety. The staff from the Café were amazingly helpful and were willing to answer all of the questions that the children had. The children even got to decorate gingerbread houses which were then displayed in the café window. Teachers at the school remain keen to learn as much as they can in and around the local community, especially when it involves cake! info@windermerenow.co.uk

BUSINESS
Hawkshead opening Ambleside has got one or two, so has Keswick... now Grasmere has stormed into the outdoor gear ‘superstore league’ with the opening of the new Hawkshead shop in the village. The new family outdoor gear store began trading in August but the official opening was the Friday of a busy halfterm week when visitors were treated to staff dressed as witches, ghostbusters and convicts, covered in all manner of Halloween blood and gore. Store manager Alvin Thormborough (he was the ghostbuster) said business had been excellent since doors opened in August. “It’s great to see so many people flocking to Grasmere over the late summer months,” he said. The Hawkshead chain of stores, now numbering 15, was taken over by outdoor clothing manufacturer Regatta for an undisclosed sum in 2010, with Regatta’s managing director Keith Black promising to end years of underinvestment in the brand by spending “whatever it takes” to rejuvenate it. He said then: “It has found the perfect home within the Regatta group.”
Opening a new shop isn’t just about sticking up a sign and putting in some stock – just ask Keri Treeby. Following the closure of long-established Ambleside business Wearings Bookshop on Lake Road in September she took over the premises and began work preparing for the opening of Herby Jacks – a gift and home accessories store that she says “will showcase the best of the UK.” And then the problems began. “When we took down the fitted bookcases we found that the plaster on the walls was all crumbling,” she said. “That was a massive job.” A peek under the carpet revealed wooden floorboards. “Lovely,” said Keri, “but a lot of work sanding and polishing.” Behind one wall of bookcases she found a

Kendal College has joined forces with English Lakes Hotels Resorts & Venues to deliver a Level 4 Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management. The new hospitality management training programme is accredited by the Institute of Hospitality, the professional body for individual managers and aspiring managers working and studying in the hospitality, leisure and tourism industry. Using a combination of dedicated training and on the job learning, coaching, and self-managed study with a company mentor supporting each participant, Kendal College provides a staff member to regularly visit each student in the workplace. Suzanne Horner from Kendal College adds: “What makes this programme unique is the opportunity for the students to tap into the experience and knowledge from the senior management team, and be exposed to leading 16
professionals within the business.
They benefit from gaining a wider understanding of the attributes required to be a hospitality leader, as well as the key aspects of the business. When they graduate in the autumn of 2017, the course will have boosted their skills, knowledge, experience, confidence and ultimately their future ability to play a leadership role in the hospitality industry.”
ELHR&V managing director Simon Berry says: “The career and skills development of our staff is the cornerstone of our success. As a family run business, we are ambitious for all our staff to do well and progress in their own careers within the group, so it’s important that we invest in our existing talent.”

period fireplace and a stone-faced wall. “Extra work to make this look good, but well worth it.” Keri, 33, who lives in Ambleside, ran the Bath House in the town for a number of years, but has always dreamed of opening her own store. She received a loan and a lot of help from Virgin Startup, the not-forprofit arm of Richard Branson’s Virgin empire, which involved spending
12 months preparing a detailed business plan under the watchful eye of a mentor. “I would recommend it to anyone thinking of starting a small business,” she said, “especially if you are a sole trader. I get monthly contact from my mentor for the first year, and it’s that advice and reassurance which is so important.” www.virginstartup.org for details of the scheme.
‘Golden’ business couple The owners of the Lake District’s most successful self-catering cottage company, Heart of the Lakes, are celebrating their ‘golden’ status, by notching up more than 50 years of marriage! Sue and Peter Jackson, who have run their Amblesidebased business along with son, Chris, for more than 40 years, were married on 6th August 1966 in Accrington in Lancashire, before honeymooning in Ireland. The happy couple met as teenagers and tied the knot three weeks after Sue, who trained as a primary school teacher at Charlotte Mason College in Ambleside, finished her course. The couple settled in Clitheroe where Peter worked at Ribblesdale Cement and Sue continued to teach in Accrington, before their son Chris was born in 1971. In 1974, the family moved to Scotland, before moving three years later to Saudi Arabia where Peter headed up a Saudi/British consultancy and Sue became the deputy

headmistress of the British School in Al khobar. They finally settled in the Lake District, with son, Chris, who became a partner at the family firm after leaving school.
Both Peter and Sue maintain that the secret to a long and happy marriage is ‘teamwork’ and making joint decisions and have thrived working together over the years at Heart of the Lakes. “We are thrilled to have reached such a milestone and can only add that we’ve got this far through our good friendship and keeping the channels of communication open,” laughed Sue.

Windermere Air Cadets visit Mountain Rescue
Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue played host to the the Windermere Air Cadets at their Ambleside HQ recently. The 15 cadets were given a comprehensive insight into how the team conducts its rescues and operations. They were then given the opportunity to try out a stretcher and to attempt to lift some of the essential equipment the team take out and carry on a rescue. They were shown the operations room and were briefed on the training and operation of rescue dogs. The cadets obtained valuable information from the crew and all enjoyed the evening tremendously and thanked all the rescue team volunteers who gave up their valuable time to meet and brief them.
Duck Race - Bonus £20k Donation As part of the Festival of the Fells event Ambleside Kirkstone Rotary club organised a Duck Race with all profits in aid of Alzheimer’s Research. The charity was specifically chosen by the club in recognition of two members with first-hand experience of living and dealing with dementia. 17 years ago John Stevenson was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 53. John and
Windermere Self Storage
his wife Mary, both members of the Rotary club, became important campaigners for research and awareness into the disease. They were regularly invited to take part on television documentaries and media interviews and became huge ambassadors for Alzheimer’s. Local businesses and individuals supported the Duck Race with great enthusiasm and with over 2000 ducks sold they were raced in heats in the river at Rothay Park as part of the Festival of the Fells weekend. Sadly, John had passed away the previous day, making the event a very poignant occasion. At the club’s meeting in November Gillian Edwards, Regional Fundraising Officer, North West for Alzheimer’s Research UK spoke of the
importance of the charity’s research and the need of awareness into the demands dementia has on sufferers, families and society. This was followed by a brief talk by Mary Stevenson, who also presented Gillian with a cheque. The Duck Race had raised over £2500 but this was further augmented by an anonymous donation of £20,000 to the Duck Race making a staggering total of £23,100 much to the delight of all concerned!

Yarns at Knit and Natter
Grasmere’s Knit and Nat was started 2 years ago as a drop-in event for like-minded ladies. Driven by having grandchildren to provide for, small items were the main target but larger challenges were undertaken such as a Safari Park and a Noah’s Ark knitted for charity, as well as small toys and gloves, hats and scarves for Shoe Box appeals. All made possible by the generous donations of wool from readers of Windermere Now. Bunting in Grasmere for the Tour of Britain cycle race this year was handkintted. Christmas Jumpers for teddy bears have been sold at Ambleside’s annual Christmas Lights Switchon. A big Thank you! to those who have donated the copious amount of wool that is stored. The group is open to anyone, held on the second Friday and fourth Tuesday of the month in the Reading Rooms at 2pm. Please contact Christine on 015394 35537 or Carrie on 015394 35318 for further information.

ART & MUSIC
Blackwell Textile Exhibition
Annie Garnett was a skillful textile designer and colourist who spanned the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. She founded and ran the Spinnery at Fairfield, Bowness which produced an array of textiles using traditional methods. Inspired by the works of writer, art critic and Victorian moralist, John Ruskin her textiles reflected the garden of her house in Windermere and the colourful landscape of the Lake District. Blackwell Arts and Craft house, Bowness is displaying an exhibition of Annie Garnett’s work until 29th January next year. Garnett is renowned as a pivotal figure in the revival of spinning and weaving in the Lake District. This collection of her work features embroidered linens, wools, and an unusual fabric called a throwan which is a mixture of flax and silk that changes colour when moved in the light. These creations won many plaudits and awards, gaining national and international commissions from the likes of the daughters of Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra. This exhibition features items from an archive owned by the Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry, Kendal, and tells Annie Garnett’s story through photographs, diary entries, personal objects and the textiles themselves. A collection of freshly-identified autochrome images are included in the Blackwell exhibition, showing Annie’s inspirational garden in full colour, which is something of a rarity given their venerable 100 year old age.

We spoke to Mike Prince about his photography. Perhaps his own thoughts best express his love of the Lake District ... “I am privileged to live in one of the loveliest places in the world and doubly privileged that my daily routine takes me into some of the most beautiful areas imaginable. Landscape photographers have many unexpected perspectives and aspects to their lives. My typical day has started well before dawn to allow for reaching a location before the first hint of light in the sky. For many of us good weather means something completely different from what the majority expect. Most of my images are made at the margins of the day, dawn or evening and rarely in ‘good’ weather. I like dark and stormy skies, wild seas and mists surrounding peaks. Dull, overcast days with scudding clouds are my niche. There is great debate about digitally processing images and how natural a picture looks. I process all images in Photoshop

with a single aim in mind. To present an image that conveys how the scene looked to me. In addition I try to convey some element of how it felt to be there at that moment. My techniques do nothing that was not possible or routine in a conventional darkroom. Living locally I spend the majority of my time in the Lakes either in the valleys or on the high fells. When not in the Lakes, the West coast and islands of Scotland are my ideal destination. If I can’t
be in a wild place, I’d choose Venice of all the world’s cities. On cold, dark November morning however, while the majority sleep, there’s nowhere I’d rather be than beside a lake waiting for the first hints of light in the sky.” If you’d like to see more of Mike’s work, pictures can be viewed at www.mikeprince.org or for the most up to date images, published on an almost daily basis on Facebook @MikePrince Landscapes.

Lakeland Folk Tales for Children Publishers: The History Press ISBN: 978-0-7509-6611-5
Taffy Thomas, MBE, a patron of the Society for Storytelling will delight children, young and old, with a new collection of wonderful stories and tales in his latest book, Lakeland Folk Tales for Children. The book has been imaginatively illustrated by
a young Cumbrian artist, Steven Gregg. Steven was born in the Lake District and currently lives in Windermere. Taffy, who has lived in Grasmere for over 30 years, has a repertoire of over 300 tales and storyteller, Giles Abbot, once said: “when Taffy goes it will be like a library burning down.” A former literature and drama teacher, Taffy’s life changed when, aged just 36, he suffered a major stroke. He used storytelling as selfimposed speech therapy, and this led to his current, highly successful career. He was awarded the MBE in the 2001 New Year Honours, and in 2009 he accepted the honorary position of first Laureate for Storytelling which ran for two years from January 2010 to January 2012.
Murder on high, and something naughty!
In the Cold of the Night Publishers: Gritstone Publishing ISBN: 978-0-9955609-1-8
“The half-naked body of a Three Peaks challenge walker is discovered below England’s highest mountain... and one of the mountain rescue team happens to be a former investigative journalist who is determined to find out what happened to “the body in the bog”. We’re not sure how Victorian writer Harriet Martineau, who lived in Ambleside for the last thirty
years of her life, would view such a racy ‘blurb’ to a new novel – especially one launched in the town. Nor this description of a collection of short stories which was launched two days later: Quirky, fun and sometimes a little naughty. Oh well, it’s the 21st century and such prim and proper niceties are no longer a necessity in the literary world! In The Cold of the Night launched at the the headquarters of Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team on 10 November. Author Andrew Bibby, a journalist, writer and fellrunner who has spent some time with mountain rescue teams learning about how they work, was on hand to meet members of the team and look around their operations base. He is donating a percentage of all his sales fees to the Langdale and Ambleside MRT.

ART & MUSIC You know it’s October when Ambleside Parish Centre’s main hall is full to the brim with the colourful work of nearly 60 artists. For 12 days the Ambleside & District Art Society took over the centre for its annual exhibition – a riot of subtle watercolours, bold oils, vibrant acryllics and pretty pastels – and, as usual, there was always a friendly welcome. When Windermere Now dropped into the centre, members (and exhibitors) Melissa Harwood and Haydn Morris were doing the welcoming duties. “Who’s in charge?” they were asked by our local scribe. As one, they replied “you are” as they pointed to each other, then burst out laughing at their impeccable comic timing. It’s typical of this friendly society that has around

An exhibition highlighting the impact of climate change across the globe will open at the Heaton Cooper Studio in Grasmere this autumn. Images from a Warming Planet is a collection of photographs by Ashley Cooper whose book of the same name will be published simultaneously. The Gallery has featured a series of exhibitions annually, including work by photographer Henry Iddon, and William Heaton Cooper’s drawings of Lakeland crags used in the definitive Fell and Rock Climbing Club climbing guides to the area, and functions as a centre of interpretation of landscape, as well as a showcase for the Heaton Cooper archive. Said Cooper: “I have spent the last 13 years travelling to every continent on the planet to document the impacts of climate change and in that time have probably witnessed more of its impacts than anyone else. The book and this exhibition come from the heart.” Director of the studio, Becky Heaton Cooper, said: “We are very proud to be hosting this crucial exhibition. We have long been admirers of Ashley’s work as a photographer. Looking at his photos is a roller-coaster experience, and we hope that this can indeed by a life-changing show.” Images from a Warming Planet will run until the end of the year. Free admission. NATURE & WILDLIFE
Conkers in crisis Back in 2007, the axing of a 100 year old diseased horse chestnut tree in Ellerthwaite square, Windermere caused uproar amongst local residents but now the future of all the Lake District’s horse chestnut trees could be under threat due to disease and an invasive moth. The Leaf Mining Moth was first found in Europe in 1985 and has spread rapidly throughout the continent arriving in southern England in 2002. Caterpillars of the non-native moth tunnel through leaves of infested trees causing them to turn autumnal brown in August instead of early November. As a result, the conkers drop before they have fully grown and over time the tree’s health is worn down. Another threat, Bleeding Canker, is a disease which affects horse chestnut trees of all ages producing external and internal symptoms including a sticky liquid oozing from blemishes on the bark which then peels away exposing a brown-orange stained inner bark below. Ultimately the disease can lead to tree death. Horse chestnut (conker) trees are an iconic sight in woods, roadsides, gardens and parks within the Lake District, scouring the ground beneath them for the biggest and best conkers is a tradition which stretches back centuries. Over the next 15 years it is estimated that around two million horse chestnut trees in Britain could be wiped out and one of our favourite childhood games could eventually become a thing of the past. 24
The gardens at Holehird can change from one week to the next. Usually at the start of the season the colours of autumn are still distinctive, but by December many of the leaves will have fallen, herbaceous plants will have been cut back, the beds mulched and the garden may appear bare. However this is just part of the usual cycle. The leaves will have been collected to make leaf mould to be added to the soil in two to three years time, the cuttings from the herbaceous plants will have been added to well rotted manure, and finely shredded wood to make compost to improve the soils’ fertility, while new bulbs will have planted for display the following year. All gardens need a period of rest so that they can be rejuvenated. In the quieter months of the year there are no volunteers in
Holehird in winter
reception but gardeners can be found doing essential tasks, the majority coming on a Wednesday. Autumn flowering bulbs such as the lilac flowered Crocus speciosus can be seen in the alpine house, blue gentians can be seen in the rock gardens, while in the paddock area at the top of the garden are four beds filled with both blue and white gentians. Holehird gardens are hosting
the Royal Horticultural Society trial of autumn flowering gentians. This starts officially in 2017 but the beds needed to be planted this year to allow the gentians time to settle in. In the walled garden the propagating greenhouse will have been dismantled and new walls built to support the new structure which will take its place. An interesting project for the future.
Don’t forget our feathered friends this winter As the nights draw in and we batten down the hatches, spare a thought for our little feathered friends living outside. Now more than ever, our local and visiting birds will appreciate any food we can offer but as with all wildlife, it’s important to know which food is appropriate. Fat is essential for birds in winter to ensure a reserve to survive the cold nights but be careful what you put out. Leftover cooking fat, margarine or vegetable fat is not appropriate. Instead choose fat balls, fat-based bars and food produced especially for birds, they will provide excellent nutrition and much needed warmth.
NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2016 - NEXT DEADLINE 3rd FEBRUARY
Birds can eat all varieties of cereal but muesli, granola and oat-based types tend to be their favourites. Put out small quantities at a time and remember that it will quickly turn to a messy, unpalatable pulp in wet weather. Keep a clean water supply available at all times. Whole apples, pears and other soft fruits prove popular and as do whole peanuts. Make sure you buy the fresh quality varieties
that are suitable for human consumption. They’re a favourite of house sparrows tits, nuthatches and greenfinches but dry roasted and salted peanuts are unsuitable for our avian friends. As with hedgehogs, birds should never be given milk but a mild finely grated cheese is another perfect fat source and will be particularly popular with robins, dunnocks and wrens. Cooked rice without adding any salt is also suitable and will be accepted by all species, especially during the coldest weather. According to the British Trust of Ornithology (BTO), we can expect to see the following birds in our garden this winter.

HEALTH & LEISURE
Nominate your Breast Friend
Has a Health Professional made a positive difference to your experience of breastfeeding? Perhaps a Midwife spent time with you in the early days that helped you get started. Maybe a GP made an extra effort to find the right medication for you when you were breastfeeding, or perhaps a Health Visitor supported you to keep breastfeeding when you returned to work. South Cumbria Breastfeeding Support would like to hear from you! The Breast Friend Award is a new award being launched by South Cumbria Breastfeeding Support. This award is made to a Health Professional based in South Cumbria who has made a significant positive difference to a mother’s breastfeeding experience. The award aims to highlight good practice in the area of breastfeeding support by Health Professionals and to raise awareness amongst Health Professionals and parents of the importance of good support for breastfeeding. Local mums can nominate a Health Professional using a simple form on South Cumbria Breastfeeding Support’s website. Any Health Professional working in South Cumbria can be nominated. This could include, for example, Midwives, Health Visitors, Obstetricians, GPs, Nurses, Paediatricians or Dieticians. Nominations have opened, and the first award will be announced in February 2017. cumbriabreastfeeding.org.uk To find out more, or to make a nomination. 26
Staveley explorer sets his sights high Jamie Annetts, an explorer from Staveley, has headed off, with Matt Stapley from Penrith, to the world’s most dangerous mountain range. Annapurna has several summits along its ridge and has earned the title of the world’s deadliest mountain because it claims the lives of more than 40 per cent of climbers who attempt it. Annapurna II has only been summited by 15 people in the 56 years since Cumbrian mountaineering legend Sir Chris Bonington made the first ascent of the peak back in May 1960. Jamie, 26 (the same age as Sir Chris was when he summited) is no stranger to danger and is confident he is prepared to meet the challenge, having done many climbs and polar crossings this year already. In between his big adventures he climbs in the Lake District pretty much every day. “Annurpurna II is just below 8000m high 7,937m - so just below what they call the ‘Death Zone’ which means the height of a mountain where you can’t acclimatise. Sleeping becomes very difficult, digesting food is near impossible and the risk of high altitude related issues are greatly increased. Once we’re on that
NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2016 - NEXT DEADLINE 3rd FEBRUARY
ridge, we are as likely to get rescued as if we were on the moon. No helicopter can come to rescue us, nobody is going to come and help. Sir Chris Bonington kindly had a chat with me on the phone about our plans. It was great because he reassured us that all the decisions we have made are sound. He wished us luck and said whatever happens we will have an unforgettably fantastic experience.” In contrast to this expedition, Jamie has just returned from leading an adventure trekking expedition to one of the seven wonders of the world Petra, in Jordan. “I was at the lowest point in the world - the Dead Sea - where the temperatures were 36 celsius and now we’re heading to one of the highest points
in the world where the temperatures will drop to minus 20 or 30”. While Jamie is on expedition, his family at home are able to track his progress as he will carry a spot device which sends a signal and pinpoints his route. “I’ll be sharing photos and keeping my blog updated with our progress while we’re away at www. expedadventure.com” Jamie Annetts is the Director of Exped Adventure, based in Staveley, near Kendal. When he is not heading off to climb the world’s deadliest mountain, he helps other people achieve their mountaineering or polar expedition dreams. After Annapurna he will begin a four-month season of expeditions to Argentina, Morocco and Norway.

On the fells
CLIVE HUTCHBY What a fabulous early autumn it was for fell lovers. For most of September and October, culminating in the halfterm break at the end of the latter, the weather was wonderful for walking. This, of course, meant lengthy lines of traffic and longer journey times, but the secret to overcoming this if you love getting out onto the mountains is to get up early. On one such morning after a 5am alarm call it took me just 35 minutes to drive from Ambleside to Eskdale and I didn’t see a car all the way (it took one hour ten minutes to get back through tourist traffic, mind you!). That journey includes, of course, the daunting Wrynose Pass and Hardknott Pass, but it does drive home the point (forgive the pun) that Ambleside is a fantastic location Lakeland. If you’ve never visited Eskdale I would heartily recommend it to you; good campsites, a youth hostel, B&Bs, excellent pubs, a miniature railway line (the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, known locally as l’aal Ratty), plus the grandest valley in Lakeland – upper Eskdale is the wildest and most rugged place in England and a ‘must’ for fellwalkers. Even majestic Wasdale, further around to the west, is in range from South Lakes. While starting a climb of Scafell from there I chatted to an Australian couple who were staying in Ambleside. “We love it here,” said the man, “and the drive over those passes was amazing!” So was a delightful packhorse bridge I crossed on the bridleway to Burnmoor Tarn, the only double-arch bridge with a wiggle in the middle in the Lake District. If there’s another such structure I’ll stand corrected.
TeamUp
With an ambitious target to ensure all 7 to 13 year old girls across the country have the opportunity to experience the benefits of team sport, in cricket, hockey and netball, the TeamUp initiative includes a novel rewards scheme for schools and teachers. Minister for Sport, Tracey Crouch said: “Our elite
women’s cricket, hockey and netball teams have enjoyed great success in recent years, not least through the unforgettable hockey gold medal in Rio.” Jo Adams, CEO of England Netball, says: “Team sport not only helps to get women and girls fit and active, but is it also proven to have an incredible impact on mental wellbeing and provides essential social skills. We look forward to ensuring all 7 to 13 year old girls have the
opportunity to enjoy the benefits of team sport in school.” Sally Munday, CEO of England Hockey, says: “Team sports provide unique benefits for girls in addition to health and fitness. Research shows the huge impact of team sport on the development of communication skills, leadership and teamwork.” teamupengland.com For more information about TeamUp or to register your school.

Training begins for 10 in 10 Matthew Bellingham is preparing to do something that very few of us would even consider. He is going to run 10 marathons in 10 days. There has been quite a bit of publicity recently about athletes doing extraordinary things connected with marathons, but to be honest doing just one is way beyond the scope of most of people. Matthew, who lives in Windermere, is undertaking this arduous project in May next year to raise money for
the Brathay Trust. He is not a seasoned runner. “This is going to probably be the hardest thing that I have ever done. Mentally and physically. I think it’s good to push ourselves out of our comfort zones. I love living in the lakes, everything I need is just outside my front door. I’m out and about training hard most nights, so if you see me running past beep your horn or give me a wave.... if you would like to donate money, please go to my justgiving page. Every little bit counts.”
Every year, Brathay help thousands of young people to make positive choices that will change their lives by: •
•
helping young people and their families overcome barriers they face on their path into education, training or work; supporting young people at risk of exploitation, criminality and abuse giving them the strength to make positive choices and take control of their lives; and,
•
working with young people in their communities and offering inspirational residential experiences at Brathay that transforms their outlook.
Focusing on each individual’s strengths through powerful experiences and structured support in the community, we inspire young people to realise their potential and develop a range of skills that raise aspirations and benefit the people around them.

If you add together all the money you have in pension arrangements, the total may well dwarf every other investment you ever make. Despite this, many people are happy to leave their pensions in the schemes of previous employers and insurance company ‘managed’ funds, which may be fine for relatively modest pension funds, but can be relatively disappointing performers. Changes to pensions announced by the government mean that there’s more choice and potential flexibility about the ways in which you can draw your pension benefits. Pension contributions by individuals are eligible for tax relief, generally at their highest rate. Up to a quarter of the value of the pension fund is available as a tax-free lump sum from age 55. Because of the tax benefits of pensions, the government has imposed limits on the total you can build up and the amounts you can pay in each year without suffering special tax charges. Retirement planning may not be the hot topic of conver-
sation at dinner parties and social gatherings but that does not mean it should be ignored. Planning ahead and getting your strategies in place early will mean that your dreams of a happy retirement have a greater chance of coming to fruition. Failure to act will mean that they are nothing but pipe dreams. To receive a complimentary guide covering Wealth Management, Retirement Planning or Inheritance Tax Planning, contact Emma Ralls of St. James’s Place Wealth Management on 07500906881/01946694082 or email emma.ralls@sjpp. co.uk. The value of an investment may fall as well as rise and you may get back less than the amount invested. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time and are dependent on individual circumstances.
