Letter from the Editor Looking through the mag this month and reflecting on the fact that we are well into Spring, it’s a story of regeneration and hopefulness. The Gowan Old Bridge in Staveley is only days away from a miraculous rebuild after all this time waiting. The Duke William, also in Staveley, is starting a new phase of it’s life and usefulness to the community. The Queen’s Head in Troutbeck is rebuilt and reopened a 1000 days after the fire that reduced it to a shell. The second phase of the Glebe refurbishment in Bowness is well under way. Coniston Sailing Club has rejuvenated it’s premises in their 50th Anniversary year.

Bridge of size

A Grand result at Potter auction A collection of photographs by Beatrix Potter’s father, Rupert Potter, was sold at auction for £1000 to an online Canadian buyer by 1818 Auctioneers.

CONSTRUCTION work is well under way on the “missing” Gowan Old Bridge in Staveley. Following the installation of piles, the concrete beams spanning the river which will form the basis of the new bridge have been installed. That is the main structure completed, requiring just the actual roadway and parapets to be finished, hopefully by 16th May. Cumbria County Council is investing approximately £500,000 in the Staveley bridge replacement project, to repair damage caused during last winter’s floods.

Grasmere on-line Grasmere’s new village website is up and running and aims to offer a one-stop shop for residents and visitors to the village. Local businesses, groups and charities, residents, councils and the Village Society are featured on the site, together with details of projects and forthcoming events and activities. If you would like to get anything onto the site or have any comments or suggestions you can contact them via the website. www.visit-grasmere.co.uk

One of the 41 black and white photographs, taken in the late summers of 1909, 1911 and 1913, is believed to be of Beatrix sat in the porch of Broad Leys, a house they rented by Lake Windermere in 1909. At the time Beatrix was working on ‘The Tale of Ginger and Pickles’. Rupert Potter was a keen and competent amateur photographer and a member of the Photographic Society of London. The National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museums in London

have exhibited and hold some of his photographs. Although Potter’s interest was portrait photography, the collection is not of people but of the house and gardens at Broad Leys (1909) and Lindeth How (1911 and 1913). There are also views of Bowness and

Work is limited to a maximum of three hours and households can use the service up to six times a year. The labour is free and residents only pay for the materials used, although sometimes these are also provided by generous partner agencies. Marie Shields from Growing Concerns, the company which will continue carrying out the repairs on behalf of the council, says “Even the smallest repairs and the most simple jobs are really appreciated by those who can’t do the work and don’t have anyone to do it for them. The feedback we get is lovely and it’s nice to do a good job that’s appreciated.” Anyone wishing to request the Handy Person Scheme, or check if they are eligible, should contact the council’s Housing Standards Team southlakeland.gov.uk or telephone 01539 733333.

So near to another disaster A motorist coming down the A592 from Kirkstone Pass misjudged the bend just above the hotel, crossed the road and mounted the pavement. The car clipped a supporting pillar, narrowly missed an electrician, crashed into the stone bay of a window before slewing back across the road into a wall. “He must have been doing 70mph,” said Simon Taylor. “We’ve got it all on CCTV.” The driver was arrested by police and charged.

“ From our first visit to the showroom it has

been a pleasure to deal with Panararmer. The attention to detail at the planning stage, the high standard of workmanship shown by the fitters was second to none. Thank you to everyone for all your patience, we love our new kitchen!

It took more than 1,000 days and cost over £2 million, but the lengthy and extensive refurbishment of one of the Lake District’s most iconic hostelries was well worth the wait. The Grade II listed Queen’s Head Hotel in Troutbeck, which suffered a calamitous blaze in June 2014, reopened to the public on 29 March. Robinsons Brewery operations manager Simon Taylor, who said the red tape delays that had seemed to drag on forever had actually worked in favour of the restoration. “It gave us the chance to enhance the natural beauty of the place,” he said, “in a sense to reinvent it. We had to deal with 200 years of smoke and grime as well as severe fire and water damage.” The residential accommodation was largely destroyed in the blaze, and it is here that the most extensive renovation has been carried out; all ten en suite bedrooms has been completely redesigned and are named after 10 of the 11 highest fells: Scafell Pike, Helvellyn, Skiddaw, Great End, Bowfell, Great Gable, Pillar, Nethermost Pike, Catstycam and Esk Pike. “We left out Scafell (the second-highest fell) so guests didn’t confuse which bedroom they were staying in!” said Simon. Outside, two new roof terraces have been added, offering fantastic views of the iconic Ill Bell range, and there are new seating areas by the front entrance.

A Zoo in Windermere, surely not? Well, no. At the time it was really Bowness. The new home for John and Beatrice Kenworthy was built by the local builder G H Pattinson ( a name synonymous with grand houses in this area). John paid £5350 for the house and grounds and a private road. That was a lot of money in 1908. The site was on the Storrs estate which GH Pattinson had bought (but not Storrs Hall itself) and had superb views to the West of the island of Rampholme, the Round House on Belle Isle and, at that time, before the trees came, the fells to the North. By 1912, in addition to the grand house, the Meadowcroft Yard complex had grown to include a cottaged yard with a band rehearsal room, a fives court, bath house, stables, garaging, a dairy, laundry, farm buildings, boat storage and an underground boilerhouse, nine cottages and a fountain! Unfortunately Beatrice Kenworthy died that year. The widower

6

John inherited £86,000 from her estate and set to having the house extended. By 1914 there were two new wings with a billiard room, concert hall and cinema. This was when he started his zoo and also formed the Windermere Zoological Society.

He created heated aviaries, animal houses, monkey and ape enclosures, and had a bear, and a lion as well as kangaroos and ostriches. He was a man who enjoyed his wealth and often had famous guests, aviators and speedboaters staying. But he was generous and shared his

pleasures, often opening his cinema, theatre and gardens to the public. John Kenworthy was remembered by employees and locals as a very kind and generous man. By 1916 he was selling up some of the expensive custom-made furniture and in 1917 moved back to Cheadle after auctioning the house. He died in 1936. The house became a school in 1920, the ostrich field became their sports field. It has since been a hotel, a Christian Guest House and is now a complex of wonderful luxury apartments. But there is still, if you can find it, a ring that was used to secure the lion.

Drive a supercar!

A new sign at the Rydal Road entrance to the University of Cumbria campus at Ambleside pays tribute to a woman who was one of the great educationists of the 19th century. Charlotte Mason was a pioneer in the development of children’s education, and the oldest building on the campus (the white-washed one) is still named after her.

People attending the 6th Cumbria International Motor Show this spring will have the chance to win a supercar driving experience. Anyone purchasing a ticket will be entered into a prize draw to win their very own supercar driving experience at the legendary Donington Park race circuit in Derbyshire. The prize is being provided by AutoXotica Supercars at Donington, who will also be bringing some of their luxury models up to the Show . Friends of the 597 AGM The formation of the Friends of the 597 in 2015 ensured the continuation of the WindermereBowness local circular bus service which was on the brink of being terminated. This has now been achieved for two years but the group needs continuous support to survive. All users and supporters are invited to attend the second Annual General Meeting of the group. You can get there on either of the first two bus circuits of the day and coffee will be served on arrival. Remember the best way to ensure the continuation of the 597 bus service is to fill every seat on every circuit. Please tell your friends and neighbours and bring them to the meeting where they will be most welcome. The Committee does hope you will attend to support its efforts. Equally we would welcome ideas and comments on the bus service and other ways we can help it prosper. What is said and agreed at this meeting may well affect the whole future of the 597 service. The 2nd. Annual General Meeting of the Friends of the 597 will be held in the Cecil Reed Room of the Marchesi Centre, Windermere on Thursday 27 April starting at 10.30am. Details of nominations for election to the committee should be given to the secretary before the meeting.

Jaguar’s, Ferrari’s, and other classics. Other things to see and do at the show will include family fun, music from Megan Doherty and Michael Elliott of South Lakes folk duo Paper Cranes and upcoming Kendal musician, Michael Elliott. There will also be a talk on Donald Campbell’s Bluebird K7. The Show takes place from 11am – 5pm on Sunday 14th May at the Westmorland County Show Ground at Crooklands near Kendal. On the countdown to reopening at Kendal’s Castle Dairy

+

After more than 15 months, there’s a frisson of excitement brewing again at The Castle Dairy Restaurant & Art Gallery in Kendal. New Head Chef Chris O’Callaghan and his new intake of apprentice chefs are poised and ready to deliver first class contemporary food and service in the historic setting of one of the town’s oldest and quirkiest buildings. A unique model in Cumbria, the Castle Dairy, under the guidance of Head Chef Chris, is run mostly by apprentices who learn to prepare, cook and serve fine dining standard food working in a small team in a busy restaurant environment. The Castle Dairy is also seen as an unofficial finishing school for Kendal College Hospitality students, offering an excellent facility to prepare them for working life. The Castle Dairy has been closed since December 2015 when it was caught up in the wrath of Storm Desmond. Fast forward to April 2017 and, after a lengthy drying out process and refurbishment, the Dairy

is now set to reopen with a new-look, but the same authentic and historic charm that makes it quite unlike any other dining venue around. Under the atmospheric eaves, a new staircase has been fitted, the fireplace has been reconditioned in the bar area, and the kitchen has been redesigned to a standard equal to some of the area’s best Michelin starred establishments. A Chef’s Table will allow guests to see the kitchen action up close whilst savouring a mouth-watering tasting menu created by Chris and his team who are busy foraging, pickling and preserving in readiness for the doors reopening. The Castle Dairy will be open from mid-April with a series of Training days and special, Invite only events. The Castle Dairy will re-open to the public for lunches and dinner every week from Wednesday through to Saturday, from early May. Booking is highly recommended. For more information and to book, visit www.castledairy.co.uk or call 01539 814756.

Tim’s Column Following the news that the Yorkshire Building Society is closing its branch in Windermere we now learn that Natwest is planning to close its Ambleside branch. The Committee on Financial Exclusion has been looking at the claims by banks that more and more people are banking online. What the banks need to realise is that only 7% of people aged over 80 bank online and a third of people aged over 80 have never used or avoid using cash machines. It looks increasingly like this this is not a programme to close unused branches but a campaign to save money by closing branches in rural areas. Let me recommend the new service for reporting road problems on the Cumbria County Council website. If you know of any road problems such as potholes or blocked drains you simply need to go to their website and pinpoint the issue on the map you find there. I have been contacted by a lot of head teachers in Cumbria who are worried about the funding that their schools will receive from Government over the coming few years. According to their figures they face a £23 million gap by 2020. This equates to the salaries of about 625 teachers across the county. The funding gap is created by the increased cost of running schools with rises in National Insurance payments and pension contributions. I had a meeting with the Schools Minister, Nick Gibb MP, the other day and he confirmed that the Government were expecting Cumbrian schools to become “more efficient”, in effect asking for bigger classes and fewer subjects to be taught in our schools. I have called for a debate in Parliament over this issue. If I can help with these or any other issues then please do get in touch you can email me at tim@timfarron.co.uk or call on 01539 723 403. 8

Windermere Town Council At the start of the new financial year, it is useful to remind ourselves what the Town Council is responsible for in our community, so here is a quick list:

• Public Toilets: funding to keep toilets in Bowness & Windermere open (the toilets themselves are managed by the local Community Care Trust). • Elleray Woods & Orrest Head: ownership in trust and management of a large part of the woodland and access road. • Planting and watering of 108 flower baskets and tubs in the summer months. • Organisation of the Windermere in Bloom garden competition. • War Memorial & Gardens, Baddeley Clock, some public benches & bus shelters (owned and maintained) • Langrigge Playground (maintenance) • Planning Applications (recommendations to the Lake District National Park on every single planning application in our area). • Local projects, where possible (for example, Ellerthwaite Square improvements). • Grants (a large number of grants to local organisations and to help encourage local events). The Annual Report for 2016/17 has just been published on our website and gives further details as to how Town Council money has been spent and what has been achieved this past year. Please do take a look. We feel we make a small but valuable contribution to the community, preserving important local landmarks for future generations. Our councillors are unpaid and not politically affiliated. We currently have some vacancies, so, if you are interested in making a difference in a small way to

Thanks go to the Bowness & Windermere Community Care Trust for organising this, particularly to Simone Backhouse. A big round of applause and thanks to the following groups Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, ladies of the Inner Wheel , Windermere Women’s Institute, Goodly Dale School, Brownies and Rainbows and to the following brave individual litter pickers: Theresa Wooll, Kevin Trevor from Brambles, David Bolton and special thanks to Frank Wilson, who goes out picking every week. Several miles of our beautiful landscape has been cleared and bags and bags of litter disposed of by Ben Taylor from SLDC. Well done! Mrs Julie Wright, Clerk to Windermere Town Council

The next phase of the work will see improvements to the promenade and the shingle beach area including crown lifting on the large lime trees along the bay, new surfacing works for footways and parts of promenade, new street furniture and new planting along the highway. Traffic will be unaffected in this area during the second phase of works, due to be completed by the end of Spring 2017.

SLDC Councillor Graham Vincent said: “The work at the Glebe is progressing well and now we are moving into a phase of improvements on parts of the foreshore.”

ART & MUSIC

Paul has got his festival hat on (so to speak!)

Poster painter protecting panoramas

Paul Harrison, the charismatic singer and guitarist in the popular Kendal-based band Room Full of Mirrors, will be a well-known face in Ambleside at the end of this year’s Festival of the Fells – he is performing in the headline musical acts on two evenings. On Friday 22 September he will strumming and singing as Room Full of Mirrors play open-air at the town’s Market Cross pedestrianised area, and the following night he will put on another hat as he plays with The Mojo Band, a rip-roaring cover band that is sure to get music fans dancing. The organisers of the second Festival of the Fells have announced a two-day line-up of music for the festival: ll Friday 22 September: 7.30-8.15pm: Scrogan’s Run; 8.30-10pm: Room Full of Mirrors. ll Saturday 23 September: 7.30-8.15pm: Phil Saunders & Friend; 8.3010pm: The Mojo Band. Robin Brackenbury, from the festival organisers Ambleside Together, said they were delighted to be expanding on last year’s one open-air concert. “There was great feedback from Uncle Carbunkle’s performance last year, so we’re really pleased that we’ll be having open-air music for two nights out of the festival’s four,” he said. “And we’re particularly pleased that Uncle Carbunkle’s Phil Saunders will be performing again – he said he loved the atmosphere last year.”

Cumbrian artist Nicholas Leigh’s work, Inspired by 1930s railway posters, captures iconic landscapes from around the Lake District. Now he plans to use his art to help protect those very landscapes. He will be donating 10% of the value of sales when supporters of the charity Friends of the Lake District order from him. He will also be donating a series of prints to help FLD with their fundraising, Nicholas said, “I like to work from places I visit while out in the hills. I use sketches and photographs then work on the originals in my studio, drawing on ideas from the old posters. I use oil paints which I think have the most vivid colours. I’m also a fell

runner and have always enjoyed getting out and about in the fells of the Lake District. Without organisations like Friends of the Lake District the Cumbrian landscape could be very different in future years and this is just my way of supporting their work to protect the landscapes we all love.”

100 years of Vera Lynn A local dance teacher put on her tights and high heels again to return to her roots and perform at the famous London Palladium theatre in a spectacular star studded show which celebrated the 100th Birthday of Dame Vera Lynn. Kym Walton, who has been teaching dance at Windermere School for the last 9 years joined her dance group from the 1970’s and 80’s to perform in the fabulous show. Dougie Squire’s Young and Second Generation dancers were synonymous with singing and dancing on all the top television entertainment shows here in the UK. “Working for Dougie was my ambition from the age of 12 after seeing the Young Generation perform locally. It was incredible to achieve that dream at the age of 16 and now to have

the opportunity to do it all again is just fantastic!” The show, which featured stars including Sue Pollard, Bradley Walsh, Hayley Westenra, Wayne Sleep, Antony Andrews and Brian Blessed as well as the Tiller Girls featured 75 of the original Dougie Squires dancers who were renamed the Palladium Generation Dancers for the show. Dame Vera, who will celebrated her 100th Birthday on 20th March, also set records by being the oldest person to release an album, on the 17th March.

Janine Bickerstaff of Friends of the Lake District said, “We aim to protect the spectacular places depicted in Nick’s work. There is always a buzz around when people see Nick’s art work. The scenes are easily identifiable but completely different to the usual depictions of the landscape and people seem to love the art-deco feel and bright colours. We are really grateful for Nick’s support and pleased that we can work with a local artist who loves the Cumbrian landscape as much as we do.” You can view and order prints and originals from Nicholas’s website. Hollywood in the Lakes

Location filming took place earlier this month in Ambleside and Windermere for a new Hollywood movie celebrating one of the Lake District’s most famous fictional characters. And movie-goers won’t have to wait long to see the results: The Tale of Peter Rabbit, a live action and CGI animation adventure based on the stories of the legendary Beatrix Potter, is expected to be released in March 2018. Funnyman James Corden is voicing the lead role of Peter Rabbit and veteran Australian actor Sam Neill (of Jurassic Park fame) is also in the line-up of celebrity voices.

Grizedale Rocks - Again

WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR BEST FRIEND TO SMELL AND LOOK GREAT? Grizedale Rocks music festival returns to Satterthwaite between Friday 16th and Sunday 18th June. Keeping the small festival feel, tickets are limited to around 1,000 this year, so you had better get in quick as more than half have already been sold through advance bookings. South Cumbrian bands, as well as a few from beyond, make up the first raft of confirmed acts. Sad-Eyed Puffins, an experimental collective having just launched their second EP, are back for the second year running. So too are the much vaunted Furness indie band The Prophets. Other returning

names include funky South Lakes act The Bare Bones Experience and Merseyside duo Rag Tag Misfits. Fresh sounds are expected from folk band The Hey Down Treaders, who enjoyed a promising 2016 appearing at Kendal Calling and Solfest. Leeds band Billy Billy 5P and solo artist Simon James are the other confirmed performers thus far with many bands and solo artists still to be announced as part of the lineup over the coming months. Bookings can be made by phone on 01229 860208 or email: info@ grizedale-camping.co.uk. Adults tickets are £20 and children are free.

Look out! There’s a banana about!

DURING FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT in March, Windermere and Bowness Fairtrade Group members were seen at Booths and Manuka Health Store in Windermere where they engaged with shoppers as to the importance of buying Certified Fairtrade goods to help farmers and their families. Being dressed as a Fairtrade banana is a good ice breaker commented Theresa Wooll, who is pictured handing out samples of chocolate and dried mango.

Attracting business tourists With the latest research showing that business tourism creates more than 16 million trips each year and contributes £4billion to the UK economy, Cumbria Tourism is launching a fresh bid to attract more conferences to the region with its free conference finding service. With major developments like the new £1million Conference and Learning Centre at Whitehaven’s Beacon Museum and the conferencing facilities included in the £16million investment at

Windermere’s Low Wood Bay Resort Hotel, Cumbria Tourism is hoping now is the time to tap into this important market.

Although business tourism is traditionally associated with cities such as Manchester and London, we have some truly unique venues and executive retreats in spectacular scenery, you simply can’t find in other parts of the country. It’s an emerging area for us, but we want to get the message out there that we have a free conference finding service to help put companies in touch with venues which offer a completely different corporate experience.”

There was further success at the awards for the Lake district with Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway also scooping the prize in the ‘Heritage Railway’ category.

Billy is making space

The former Duke William pub in Staveley is throwing off it’s run-down, dowdy looks to be re-generated as a bright new workspace for creative businesses in the region. Drawing on the Grade II listed pub’s heritage it will be known as Billy’s Space. Manchester-based property development and regeneration company, Watch This Space, has produced artists’ impressions which show the finished scheme, which was granted planning permission earlier this month. There will be nine dedicated workspaces, each with their own front door, suitable for offices or leisure use. They all have their own kitchen, toilets, cycle storage, electric car charging spaces and added quirks including fire places. Planning permission has also been secured for a 1,700 sq ft extension which will be constructed at the end of the existing property. Work has already begun.

Watch This Space undertook a consultation with the local community asking them to contribute their own ideas about the scheme. With over 150 responses from local residents, as Michelle Rothwell, of Watch This Space, explains: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response we’ve had from both businesses and the local community as they can really appreciate the positive impact this development will have on the area. We’re also giving occupiers the opportunity to be their own Landlord as we’re offering occupiers the opportunity to purchase or lease the spaces. We’ve created a real business destination at ‘That Space’ in Manchester and we’re determined to replicate this buzz in Staveley. My family live in Cumbria and so this area of the world has always been close to my heart. With work now underway we’re on schedule to complete in the Autumn.” www.billys-space.property

Guiding the Blue Badge Guides In a culmination of a campaign by Joanne Hunter, co-owner of the Grasmere Gingerbread Shop, to cement the village’s profile as a tourist destination the county’s famous Blue Badge Guides were welcomed to Grasmere to help them brush up their valuable local knowledge. “Blue Badge guides are the crème de la crème of tourist guides; visitors really look to them for having that extra slice of local information,” she said. Joanne, who has lived and worked in Grasmere since she was a little girl, knows every inch of the village.

As well as walking them around she arranged trips to local attractions Allan Bank, the Heaton Cooper Gallery and Forest Side.

“We were absolutely delighted with the reception and hospitality we were given in Grasmere,” said Geoff Cook, Chair of Cumbria Tourist Guides. Tess Pike, a Kirkby Lonsdale-based blue Badge Guide, explained “Each of us is a frequent visitor to the village and we were delighted to have the opportunity to benefit from Joanne’s up-to-date insider knowledge of Grasmere,” she said.

A landmark fundraising figure has been reached by family-run Amblesidebased cottage company Heart of The Lakes. In 22 years of fundraising for Fix The Fells it has donated more than £250,000 to help

the charity repair footpaths in the Lake District. Since 2012 a full-time upland path ranger has been funded by the donation, plus a matching £218,000 from the National Lottery Fund.

Ambleside gets around Ambleside’s part in the launch last year of Freedom Wizard, a nationwide disabled mobility charity, will be advertised all over the country. The Love Ambleside logo, featuring a stylised image of the Bridge House, one of the most iconic structures in the Lake District, is featured on a newly-purchased bus that will help wheelchair users enjoy the great British outdoors. Charity founder Allie Pennington, who offered offroad wheelchair test-drives during last year’s Festival of the Fells in Ambleside, told

Windermere Now: “It was the least we could do after all the support from the Ambleside Together group in helping to launch the charity.”

Also featured on the van is another Lake District icon, the photogenic springer spaniel Max, whose Facebook site ‘Max Out in the Lake District’ has made him an internet sensation.

FORAGED FOOD

Wild Garlic Pesto

By Neil Mulhall

Wild Garlic or Ramsons is growing profusely at the moment. It can be found in abundance in broadleaf forests and hedgerows. You can usually smell it before you see it, a real pungent garlicky smell. It is a member wild member of the alliums family and all parts including the flowers are edible. We use wild garlic for many culinary uses in the kitchen from risottos and stews to soups and salads but one of our favourites is Wild Garlic Pesto and it’s so easy to make. This recipe will make one small jar. And when stored in the fridge will last several weeks. INGREDIENTS

• 50g washed Wild Garlic leaves • 30g pine nuts very slightly toasted in a dry frying pan • 35g freshly grated parmesan cheese, a mixture of coarse and fine works well • 70ml olive oil • Freshly ground black pepper and sea salt METHOD

The easiest way is to pop Wild Garlic leaves and the pine nuts into a food processor and blitz for a few seconds, until it’s all chopped. We prefer it quite coarse. However if you don’t have a food processor simply chop the leaves and crush the pine nuts with a pestle and mortar. Transfer to a bowl and add the grated parmesan and olive oil and mix really well and season to taste. RECIPE IDEAS

Simply use as you would basil based pesto. It’s delicious with pasta with a little tomato puree or a favourite of ours is to spread nice and thick on bruschetta with cherry tomatoes 14

He has collected a multitude of Young Chef nominations and awards at local, regional and national competitions but his unassuming nature means he would be the last person to ever tell anyone about his success. FRESH AIR? FANCY A BIT OF

NATURE & WILDLIFE

Would yew believe it Brian Blessed talks from a tree!

The booming voice of veteran actor Brian Blessed OBE can be heard coming from a ‘talking’ yew tree in Great Knott Wood, Windermere. The recordings have been installed by the Woodland Trust in the yew, the species of which is one of the longest-living trees in the UK natural habitat. Blessed’s voice is well known to the younger generations: in 1999 he provided the voice for the CGI character Boss Nass in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

6000 Cumbrians twitching

5991 people in Cumbria joined in with half a million others in the UK in the world’s largest garden wildlife survey, counting more than eight million birds during the 38th RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch. The event held over the last weekend in January revealed an explosion in the number of recorded sightings of waxwings. These attractive looking birds flock to UK gardens in winter once every 7-8 years when the berry crop fails in their native Scandinavia. Weather conditions leading up to the Birdwatch meant that this year UK gardens were treated to a range of different visitors. Dr Daniel Hayhow, RSPB Conservation Scientist, said: “The sight of a robin or blackbird perched on the garden fence is often one of the first experiences we have with nature. So to have over half-a-million people taking part and counting a bumper eight million birds across one weekend is amazing.” There was also good news for robins,

Be mindful of birds nests

which climbed from number nine in 2016 to number eight this year in the rankings in Cumbria. Blackbirds were another climber, moving from number four to number three and becoming the county’s most widespread garden bird after being spotted in 95% of Cumbrian gardens. The survey also highlighted a downturn in the recorded sightings of blue tits (-2%) and great tits (-4%) on last year’s figures for Cumbria. Dr Hayhow explained: “Numbers of small bodied birds such as blue tits and great tits are susceptible to changes in weather throughout the year, and scientists believe that the prolonged wet weather during the 2016 breeding season

Did you know It is an offence to cut down a hedge or tree intentionally or recklessly whilst there are birds nesting in it? Wild birds are protected by law with The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 which is one of the most important pieces of Wildlife legislation in the country. In this context it means that if you cut down a tree

led to fewer younger birds surviving than usual, meaning there are fewer to be seen in gardens.” The nation’s school children noticed a similar pattern when taking part in the RSPB Big Schools Birdwatch. The UK-wide survey of birds in schools saw over 73,000 school children, including 1260 across Cumbria, spend an hour in nature counting birds. Starling was the most common playground visitor in Cumbria with an average of 12 per school. The RSPB is asking people to provide a place for wildlife in their gardens outdoor spaces – whether it’s putting up a nest box for birds, creating a pond for frogs or building a home for hedgehogs.

and you knew there was a chance that birds were nesting in it or you didn’t check, then you would be guilty of the offence. The penalties are imprisonment and/or a fine. If there is more than one bird, nest or egg then there will be a separate fine for each one. Please check all trees and hedges before wielding your axe or shears.

Open Day at Holehird Gardens

Spring has finally sprung! Hooray! So without further a do, we’ll all be spending much more time outside, away from the old gogglebox, enjoying the sunshine and relaxing in the garden. Except it can be very hard to relax in a space that may well have been ignored for the past few months… or years!?

Meet the gardeners at work on Saturday 20th May 10am-4pm

Following last year’s successful Open Day Lakeland Horticultural Society are issuing a repeat invitation, this time a bit earlier in the year. Holehird Gardens has all the year round interest in its 12 acres with spectacular views of the high fells and Lake Windermere. It is the home of the Lakeland Horticultural Society with about 1600 members. Of these some 200 are active volunteers. It is unique in that there are no paid gardeners, relying entirely on volunteers. The gardens are open throughout the year from dawn till dusk. The volunteers have varying roles, including: • Gardening - developing and maintaining the gardens • Wardening - manning

Reception from April till the end of October • Running education courses and lectures • Producing the LHS Journal, a garden guide, leaflets, and cards etc There are tasks for all tastes, both for the fit and less fit. LHS maintain four National Plant Collections: Astilbe, Daboecia, Meconopsis, Polystichum. The Society operate a plant database, and computerised plant labelling, a specialist library and a Met. Office approved weather station. Plants propagated by LHS gardeners are on sale at the Gardens. Do bring interested friends and family on May 20th. There are various Children’s trails to suit all ages. There is limited disabled access including the Walled Garden.

Our gardens should be our pride and joy, and in summer, many of us can spend more time out than in, so it’s worth spending a bit of time and energy in getting them into a great looking shape and making sure they are healthy, productive and beautiful. Whether your garden has become an overgrown, overwhelming, out of

control eco experiment, or it could just do with a bit of face-lift, then a local landscaping or gardening business can help you with ideas on how to reap the most of your garden. You might want a new patio for hosting summer barbecues, a new vegetable patch perhaps, or just some new grass turf to replace that old, brown, dying lawn that currently covers the extent of your outdoor property. You’d be surprised how far a little investment and time can go in making your garden seem more spacious, and a much nicer place to be. Why not chat to a local business and see how you can transform your garden and your summer.

Crucial information... plus music and cake! While Grange-over-Sands singer Vincent Hindle crooned out some ageold favourites as the cakes, brownies, tarts and scones disappeared at an alarming rate, there was some serious stuff going on at an information afternoon staged at Ambleside Parish Centre. The South Lakeland Age UK event was organised to coincide with the weekly meeting of the popular Evergreen group for Ambleside over 50s, with the idea of getting across some very useful information for those in (and approaching) their twilight years. Tracy Smith from Age UK based in Kendal was keen to get across the fact that the charity was pro-active in helping elderly people deal with the perils and pitfalls of 21st century life. “We have a helpline number so people can call us for friendly advice or to arrange a home visit,” she explained. “Some people may need information – for others it can be more complex.” Local police community support officer Laura Jackson was there too busy promoting an informative booklet produced by

The booklet features an introduction by Esther Rantzen, explaining that

older people are popular targets for conmen (and women) because they are more trusting.

With marquees showcasing jam making, marrow growing and basket making, rural shows have formed a part of British country life for hundreds of years and are a fabulous way to celebrate the traditions and quirks of rural living, after all, who doesn’t love marvelling at the spectacle of giant vegetables? The root of the country fair is medieval. Back then, these fairs were a place traders could swap and sell 22

Cadets at Malcolm Wilson Rally

and hard-working country folk would gather together to have a well earned rest and a natter. The fundamental business of the country fair has always been livestock. The farming machinery and methods may of changed over the years but the heart and soul remains the same, it’s a place where skill, care and attention are rewarded with the highly coveted rosette. Then there’s the sheepdog trials, a chance to show city dwelling dog owners just what a Border Collie is capable of doing. Long live the country fair!!

- NEXT DEADLINE 5TH MAY

Not only does it give us an opportunity to buy local and support a hardworking craftsman or woman it also offers a scenic window to a bye gone age far away from huge supermarkets and corporate living. Non-commercial shows give us a chance to kick back, relax and fully appreciate our rural life whilst celebrating every member of the community including Mable and her marmalade. This season kicks off with Coniston country fair on 23rd July. Be there or be a square dance.

Cadets and staff from 1264 Windermere Squadron attended the Malcolm Wilson Rally in Grizedale Forest on Saturday 11th March where they volunteered as footpath marshalls. Civilian Instructor John Hill said they all enjoyed seeing the cars driving at high speed through the forest tracks and for most it was the first such event they had attended. Some of the cadets also took the opportunity to undertake some Field Craft training by building shelters from items they found in the forest. The Squadron will now benefit from a small donation from the Rally organisers.

We love the Lake District A Facebook group entitled I love the Lake District! has managed to attract almost 73,000 members, with a staggering amount of people regularly uploading photos of their adventures in the area. From pooches standing atop mountains to amusing signs dotted around the region. It’s a place where lovers of the The Lake District can come together to discuss and share their Lakeland shenanigans via photos and messages. The ILTLD group is a fabulous forum for people who love and appreciate the beauty of the Lakes enabling them to swiftly swap ideas and make recommendations through their photos including favourite walks, dog friendly pubs and hiker cafes.

CHURCH NEWS

Churches Together in Windermere

Christian Aid Week, 14-20 May For Christian Aid Week the focus will be on the plight of refugees stranded in Greece. In August 2016 CAID’s team met with a number of extraordinary people living in camps in Greece , showing amazing resilience and bravery in

uncertain times . In Greece, Christian Aid’s partner charity offers stoves and cooking facilities for families stranded in refugee camps. For people far from home, cooking their own meals is an important shred of normality in an otherwise uncertain world. £285 is enough to provide a refrigerator for a community kitchen in a refugee camp. Last year members of St.Martin’s and Carver churches did a house-tohouse collection in

Windermere and Bowness. The amount collected was £2,757. The money went to improve the lives of families living on low lying islands on the Bramaputure River in Bangladesh. Many thanks to all the collectors and to all who gave donations. Any help with this year’s house-to-house collection to help refugees will be most welcome. Picnic and Games on the Glebe! As a church family at Lakes Christian Centre, we love to hang out together socially, especially over the summer months. These socials are open for everyone in the community to join us. On Sunday 21 May (after our 11am

Service, which finishes at 12.30pm) we’ll be heading down to The Glebe in Bowness for a picnic followed by fun games. So grab a packed lunch and come and say hello, as you’re more than welcome! (Plus there’s no obligation to participate in the games!)

We have plenty more great events planned for 2017, so please check out our F3 Ministry webpage via www. lakeschristiancentre. co.uk or email the Church Office for details at info@ lakeschristiancentre. co.uk.

‘A New Commandment’ ...from the Director of Pastoral Care Uk.

This month at FILLING STATION we’ll hear something of the vision and achievements of Pastoral Care UK, from Teresa Onions, who has served the Christian community as a counsellor, leader and trainer, a counselling supervisor for the NHS and the originator of widely used learning materials and courses. Teresa defines pastoral care as “a central part of God’s mission.” THE MARCHESI CENTRE Holly Rd WINDERMERE LA23 2EU 7:30 Thursday 18 May

SCHOOL REPORT

Goodley Dale

It is that time of year again where all of the Key Stage 2 children at Goodly Dale get to venture out onto the Lake to take part in their annual sailing lessons. The children sail in small groups of four with each group accompanied by a member of staff and a sailing instructor. The children take part in either an introductory lesson or build on their knowledge from prior lessons to enhance their sailing skills. Key Stage 2 love every second of the experience and make excellent progress during their lessons. This being the Lake District they sail in all conditions and embrace any challenges they face on the day, whether this be wind, rain, sun or hail. The main focus is learning about the key parts of the boat and gaining essential skills needed to get the boat moving and changing direction.

Ambleside Primary

Children at Ambleside CE Primary School had a fantastic day with students from the University of Cumbria recently. All the children, from years 1 through to 6 took part in exciting activities to learn more about their current curriculum topics with fun, teambuilding and challenges galore! Years 1 and 2 are pictured enjoying learning about their environment as they solve a knight’s quest.

- NEXT DEADLINE 5TH MAY

Grasmere Primary Since the London 2012 Olympics Grasmere primary have been using some of their sports funding to support running, through the acquisition of a proper sports field. Even better, they’ve had their very own Olympian leading the running club - John Kirkbride, who has been ably assisted by Lyn. Libby Dixon and Eleanor Knowles raised the profile and prestige of running in the school and most of the juniors go to running club, with Over four hundred runners from twentysix schools recently registered for the annual South Lakes Inter Schools’ CrossCountry running event at the Elleray Campus of Windermere School. In the U10 Girls’ race a superb run from Jessica Edmondson of Coniston Primary School saw her finish ahead of Ella Martindale (St Thomas’s), with Kate Collin (St Mark’s) third. Good performances from the home runners meant Windermere School won the U10 Girls’ Shield. The U10 Boys’ race saw Louis Bigland of Heron Hill Primary School run well to finish first, ahead of Simon Rigby (St Oswald’s) and Lewis Fernhead (St Mark’s). Hawkshead School won the U10 Boys’ Shield. In the U11 Boy’s race the spectators were treated to an exciting race. A sensational run from Charlie Allmond of Crosthwaite School saw him take first place, ahead of Jack Dixon

many of them also in local club Ambleside AC. Tiny Grasmere school had two children in the recent National Cross Country Championships at Prestwold Hall, Leicestershire. It was a potentially intimidating

situation but the two Grasmere boys rose to it magnificently. The school were very proud of them as well as the many friends from Ambleside AC who also featured. Well done, everyone!

Windermere School

(Grasmere). A determined run saw Hector Westmoreland-Nicholson, of Windermere School, snatch third place, Windermere School went on to win the Boy’s U11 Shield. The U11 Girl’s race was fast and furious from the start. Sophie Rylance (Lindale School) eventually edged out Clara Samson (Ghyllside) to claim first place. Sarah Smith (Heron Hill) ran an impressive race to finish in third place. Ghyllside School won the U11 Girls’ Shield.

Following the races, well-earned refreshments were available for all participants, before the final presentation ceremony. Sarah Whitehead, who organised the event, was full of praise for all of the runners; “It was a fantastic afternoon of sport and all those who took part should feel very proud of themselves. This was a tough course and required real determination, especially the final climb”

Langdale Primary This year for the first time Langdale Primary School signed up for The Big Pedal run by Sustrans and supported by Cumbria County Council Active travel. The challenge ran from 20 – 31 March and on each day schools competed to see who could record the greatest number of pupils, staff and parents cycling or scooting to school. It also gave the year 5 & 6 children the chance to put their February Cyclewise training into practice. Despite some very Cumbrian weather on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of the first week, there was a great turn-out. On day four Langdale were ranked 9th in the UK in their category, which is an amazing achievement.

Well done to all those taking part and a special thank you to the parents for going out of their way to make this possible.

Continuing on an active theme, the junior children have had a very busy sporting half-term. The first competition was the Lakes Cluster Primary School 6-a-side Football Festival for years 3 & 4, who came second in their tournament; narrowly missing out on first place by goal difference. The following week the juniors were at Windermere School

competing in the Elleray Shield, Inter Schools’ Cross Country Event. Fourteen children braved the cold and mud to run the 2km course, they did really well and should be very proud of themselves. Following the cross country success came a visit to The Lakes School to take part in the ‘Quicksticks’ Hockey Festival. This time the Cumbrian weather defeated everyone and the tournament was rescheduled for April. Two beech trees in the school’s forest area had to be felled recently. The chippings from the trees have already been used in the playground and stools for the forest area will be made with some of the offcuts. The felled trees have been left in-situ and Stephen Hey, a chainsaw artist is going to create some wonderful sculptures with the trunks so there is a lasting legacy of these magnificent trees.

Blue 4 You The school motto of St Cuthbert’s, as written by the children, is “Help one another, this is what we do with all our hearts.” The school are fortunate to have very generous and giving families who are always ready to support a good cause locally or globally. In March pupils saw the plight of the many millions of families and in particular children who are dying in eastern Africa (as well as in other countries) from a lack of suitable or available drinking water. The children soon realised that no person should be denied access to drinking water. And with that, an idea was formed.

One Friday in March the whole school came to school dressed head to foot in blue to represent clean drinking water and so the fund raising began. The campaign, ‘Blue 4 You’ was launched suggesting St Cuthbert’s were wearing blue and raising funds

for the child who has no water to drink. ‘A glass of life for children who thirst’ was the strap line. The empathy of the children as always was staggering and even the very youngest children could grasp the moral issues around a child dying of thirst or poor quality water. The children and families raised £131 to send to a water aid charity. So what next? Headteacher Mr Harrison has already been speaking with Yakkers from Lakeland Radio. “Could this project go county wide? Why stop there – let’s go global!”

HEALTH & LEISURE

Thousands grab their goggles for the Great North Swim Windermere is bracing itself for it’s annual open water challenge, the Great North Swim. Since 2008, thousands of novice and experienced swimmers have been swapping the warm comfort of their local swimming pool to savour the alfresco delights of Windermere. Currently the UK’s largest open water swimming event running over a long weekend; this year 9-11th June,

participants of all ages and abilities are invited to wriggle into their wetsuits, grab their goggles and plunge into Lake Windermere in the hope of raising bucket loads of cash for charity. Swimmers can tackle a range of distances, including ½ mile for the beginner, 1 mile, 2 miles and 5k for the brave, and for those with the skills and stamina of David Walliams a whopping 10k! The event also features thrilling elite races with some of the

world’s best swimmers. Now in it’s tenth year, hotels and B & Bs are set for a very busy weekend whilst local residents are only too aware of the massive influx of people descending on the village over the weekend period. For those wishing to dip their toes in the water, limited charity places are still available. Alternatively, swimmers can buy their own place direct from the organiser.

Gearing up for gruelling bike challenge It’s that time of year again, when committed road cyclists step up their training in preparation for the UK’s toughest cycle race. The legendary Fred Whitton Challenge consists of a 112 mile

cycle race around the Lake District, starting at Grasmere and taking in climbs of Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Hardknott and Wrynose passes. It is run in honour of Fred Whitton. Fred, who died aged just

50 in 1998, and who was an extremely popular member of the Lakes Road Club. It is a fabulous spectator event, and there are still a few charity rider places left at a reduced entry fee of £45. This year’s event takes place on Sunday 7 May.

New facilities at Sailing Club New changing rooms, toilets and showers have been officially opened at Coniston Sailing Club, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary. The improvements, which entailed building an extension in matching Lakeland stone, was enabled with grants from Sport England, Cumbria Community Foundation, the Sir John Fisher Foundation and the Lake District National Park as well as donations from members and visitors. The facilities were built to cope with 26

the occasional winter flooding that the club has suffered over the years. The sailing season at Coniston has just started and members are looking forward to welcoming members

CLIVE HUTCHBY

I’ve always been amazed at estate agents trumpeting ‘south-facing views’. Yes, it means the window will be facing south and, consequently, will receive plenty of sunshine; but no, it does not help a view when looking in the direction of the brightest thing in the sky. A lot of people I know go fellwalking because they love to take photographs of beautiful places – I’ve always got my camera handy, but I’m painfully aware that some of the prettiest scenes from the fells are not easy to capture because they are south facing. Similarly, walking east in the early part of the morning runs into the same problem... so, for the benefit of fellwalking snappers, here are some of my favourite fell walks where there are great northerly and westerly views: • Pike o’Blisco from Wall End: fabulous views of the Langdale Pikes and, on the summit, a peerless view of Bowfell; • Wetherlam (lIttle Langdale side): great view of the Langdale Pikes above the depression of Blea Tarn; • Loughrigg from Ambleside: generally in a north-west direction and a marvellous vista of the Vale of Grasmere from just north of the summit; • Lingmoor Fell from Elterwater: generally west with – you’ve guess it – one of the finest views of the Langdale Pikes. By now you might have sussed that the Langdale Pikes are photogenic! But it’s not just their arresting shape that makes them such a great subject for a photographer – their Great Langdale frontage is best seen from the south (and the east) because of a trick of the light.

Looking north-west: the Langdale Pikes seen from an outcrop on Black Fell Clive Hutchby, who contributes to Windermere Now, is revising Alfred Wainwright’s seven- volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells. Books One, Two, Three and Four (the Eastern, Far Eastern, Central and Southern fells) have already been published.

Rusty Bullets to headline at Joe and Connie Calling Saturday 13 May is the date for the third Joe and Connie Calling. Held, as usual, at Allithwaite Community Centre and playing fields (LA11 7QS) this event is well worth a visit. This year, Rusty Bullets head up the bands which include; The Bare Bone Experience, Underdogs, Braxton Hicks, Amongst The Giants, Underdogs, Chuck Fish and Pariahs. There is a real family feel to this special event which boasts attractions such as; a fun fair, bubble football, bouncy castles, sand art, mascots, owl sanctuary and magician, Dave Simpson. In a change to previous years, there will be two separate stages this year, one indoors and one out, and there will be plenty on offer from talented, local youngsters. The Elite School of Dance, of which Connie was once a member, will be giving a taster from their forthcoming dance show. Also taking to the stage are members from the incredibly talented Grange Operatic Society. Other

performers include; Lizzy G Jazz Singer, Dance Atik, Burneside Brass Band and The Bay Community Singers. A bar, hog roast, cake stall and ice creams means there will be plenty of refreshments and organisers would like to say a very big thank you to BAE Systems for once again providing First Aid. The event is in aid of the Butterfly Hugs Foundation, a charity which was set up when Cark couple, Nicola and Ian Elson, received the tragic news that both their children were suffering from Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD). You can read their story on their website www.butterflyhugs.co.uk

Walkers will gather at Arnside and cross the Bay accompanied by all-terrain Bay Search and Rescue vehicles. The walk will take around three and a half

hours to cover eight miles and finishes at Kents Bank near Grange-over-Sands. Why not get a group together of friends and family and join fellow walkers at Arnside on Saturday 6th May at 2.15pm to set off at 2.45pm? Places must be booked via Brathay’s website www.brathay.org.uk
