Soho House was the home of industrialist, entrepreneur and Handsworth visionary Matthew Boulton from 1766 to 1809. Boulton was the founder member of the Lunar Society, the leading group of thinkers, philosophers and scientists of their era who regularly met at Soho House. Members included James Watt, Erasmus Darwin, Josiah Wedgwood and Joseph Priestley. The Society has been given credit for developing concepts and techniques in science, agriculture, manufacturing, mining, and transport that laid the groundwork for the Industrial Revolution. coining mill in which every process was automatic. Not only was Boulton improving the poor state of Britain’s coinage, but by this time he was also supplying coins to the Bermudas, Sierra Leone, Madras and France, as well as equipping the mints of Russia, Denmark and Spain. Boulton’s image now appears alongside James Watt on the Bank of England’s new £50 note in recognition of the role he played in the history of coin production in England. Today, Soho House is a museum that is open to the general public as part of the Birmingham Museums Trust. It has a beautiful garden and tea room that are tranquil spaces for people to enjoy free of charge. Soho House, Soho Avenue (off Soho Road), Handsworth, Birmingham, B18 5LB.
