glitch in the everyday (2018) case study project 302 proposed interventions situated in campbell arcade to - double experience investigate potential regular speed x2,the opposing direction of the glitch in dirupting routine, operating within the mundane/transitory. To produce new encounters within site and provide moments of how can encounters with curiosity and in-between-ness contemplation/respite.

#1 surface tiles: a kinetic tile installation mapping the movement of people through the passage to explore the glitch as a sensory encounter; tiles moving and rustling through activation by presence. a durational aspect of the patination of copper adds to the glitch.

a hybrid supermarket (2018) research major project challenging current systems within the supermarket, seeking to enhance the user experience beyond efficiency and pragmatics, the glitch is the hybrid supermarket in the food system (macro), as well as a design method (micro) manifesting in multiple forms to activate the senses, prioritizing sensory experiences, time, openness and the encounter between user and product.

surface activation
the ceiling is a dynamic surface mirroring the activity and movement below, providing a different kind of engagement and accessibility from out of reach displays, directing the gaze across zones as a subtle visual cue
considering scale and packaging of produces, herbs are packed in sachets which allow scent to pass through - a sensory engagement. over time, the screen becomes more transparent, a cue for products to be restocked
the surface between BOH & FOH glitches as movement sensors are activated during restocking, bringing a level of exposure to operational processes during certain parts of the day

endcaps: exposed, short blocks of shelves @ end of aisles where special offers are typically located
touch level (0.9-1.2m): catered to children
components of a meal (core food groups) are categorized into zones, allowing users to assemble a meal intuitively through their journey. within static zones are mobile, modular displays that can be rearranged
the void through the display system is a navigational tool that opens up the space. castors are fitted on the displays which can be rearranged according to seasonal produce and restocked directly

layout plan 1:200 scale
section nts herb screen & packaging
to disrupt the linear, sequential journey through the supermarket, static zones categorizing products are created with mobile, modular displays that can be rearranged within each zone
rethinking the scale of products sold & how they are packaged - selling herbs in small sachets (instead of big bunches)which allow scent to pass through, engaging the senses
categorized into zones as the components of a meal (core food groups), journeying through the supermarket allows users to assemble a meal intuitively
as sachets are bought and removed from the display, the herb screen becomes more transparent, a temporal void which acts as a cue for products to be restocked
the idea of the void through the display system enables it to be used as a navigational tool that opens up the space display carts are fitted with castors, changing the restocking process to one where displays are filled directly instead of transferring from trolley to displays the arrangement of modular displays can be adapted according to produce available each season less variety of products are stocked, but a greater amount of each product is available
unlike displays that are high and out of reach, mirrored ceiling elements provide a different kind of engagement and accessibility - visual not physical this opens up lines of sight, where a product is not visible in frontal view (especially if crowded), it can be visible through the ceiling users are able to build their menu because there are openings to look across the space to see & engage other parts of the supermarket the ceiling is a dynamic surface mirroring the activity and movement below

sensory engagement (2017) design studio to rethink the retail experience of fragrances, using an installation as a method of display for customers to engage with the product effortlessly while eliminating packaging and the ritual of spraying on blotter strips. sensory engagement of scent becomes a spatial experience. the storefront is designed to minimise visibility using frosted glass, encouraging navigation by scent.

specialisation investigating the city as an urban interior, the specialisation considers the role of the facade in relation to the ground plane; how we engage with high rise buildings on a street level. I chose to redesign the ground level and facade of the ICI building, using a broad strategy of facilitating transitions between public and private spaces, directing the gaze and operable furniture/facade.

foyer (2017) design studio exploring the notion of the foyer as an in between space. through a process of making objects, photographing them and translating the images into collages and perspectives, I developed conceptual ideas of inhabiting the frame, looking at looking and designed a series of encounters in a new foyer typology, where a structure sits within the existing foyer to create new encounters while transitioning through the space.
