A Message from the Dean Dear Cathedral Family, We have well and truly begun a year of transformation here at Christ Church Cathedral. Already in January we have almost completed final preparations for the installation of our restored steeple during the first part of the year. We have begun the preliminary phase of a capital campaign for funding needed capital improvements. We have set in place plans to formulate, during Lent, a strategic plan for formation and outreach programs. Also, planning is ongoing for my sabbatical time this summer. In this first letter of the year, I would like to say just a few things about each of these, as well as to say “thank you” and “farewell” to Canon Dan Wagner. Interior and exterior preparations for the steeple are almost complete as I write these words and will certainly be done by the end of January. The interior and exterior steel supports are in place, and the “curb” on which the steeple will rest is visible from Royal Street. Now we await final word about the steeple’s delivery date. Once this is certain, we can begin the process of planning for street closures and installation. As soon as we have details, you will be alerted!
PARISH MEETING, VESTRY INSTALLATION, AND RECEPTION HONORING CANON WAGNER Sunday, January 29 following the service.
You may recall that at the end of the year your vestry approved moving forward with a capital campaign for funding improvements and additions to our physical plant. This decision was based on the findings of our feasibility study last fall, as well as the receipt of a generous preliminary pledge, which provides for the steeple, enhanced exterior lighting, and more. The vestry also moved to retain Southeastern Advancement Services to direct this campaign; the firm’s president, Tom Hanrahan is now on site directing the preliminary steps in this effort. After leadership recruiting is complete and the cornerstone gift phase in done, the vestry will determine a goal, and we will begin the effort in earnest. Much more information about this will soon be forthcoming.
Above and beyond the preservation and enhancement of our historic property, the reason for increasing our visibility and accessibility is to enable us to minister more effectively to those who would come here be part of God’s household, to those whom we reach out to with God’s love and care, to our diocese, and to the Mobile community. So, our planning this spring will be not only for our facilities but also for what we will do with them. We will be partnering with Ministry Architects of Birmingham to fashion a whole-church oriented strategic program plan. During the third week of Lent, two of their consultants will be on campus to meet with our ministry groups, our leadership, and most importantly with families and individuals to learn more about our gifts and our needs. They will then formulate a recommendation for how we might move forward with formation and outreach programs that are engaging for families and the whole congregation. This will be a wonderful opportunity to bring together the “whole picture” of our life as the Cathedral Family. Out of this planning will also come some suggestions for work that you may begin as a parish family this summer during my sabbatical time. This period is meant to be a time of renewal not only for me, but for the whole parish as well. Already, plans are in place for the thirteen Sundays I will be away; you will be hearing from and spending time with Canon David Johnson (AKA Leigh Rendrey’s father), Dean Emeritus Johnny Cook, the Reverend Ede Plovanich, and the Reverend Marshall Craver. I believe you will find this summer to be a time of refreshment and new perspectives. Sadly, Canon Wagner will not be with us this summer. But gladly, he will be answering a joyful call to ministry in his native state of South Carolina. We will say our farewells to him formally at our annual (continued on page 3)

A M e s s a g e f r o m t h e C a n o n Pa s t o r Dear Cathedral Family, On January 8, I made the announcement that I was leaving the Cathedral and heading to St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church in Aiken, South Carolina to become its vicar. Since then, it has been an interesting ride. There is mourning and excitement. There is sadness in my leaving but joy and support for my new call. I thank you all for your support these last few weeks. Moreover, I thank you all for the love and support I have received since I came to Mobile and Christ Church Cathedral in late June 2014. Saying “thank you” does not fully convey how grateful I am to the Cathedral Family. In my final semester of seminary, I was released by my diocese and that added to my stress level of completing seminary and getting ordained a transitional deacon and then priest. But through discernment, prayer, and conversation, I ended up here. Thanks be to God for this place and for Dean Gibson! You all welcomed me and helped me integrate into life at the Cathedral and in Mobile. You all helped me settle into ordained life, were there to witness my ordination to the priesthood, and have been my parish where I have been able to minister to you all. Of course, you all were ministering to me all the while—thank you. As I leave the Cathedral and Mobile, I am full of joy and thanksgiving. While I am leaving, it is not goodbye, but more of “hasta luego” (“until later”) or “adieu” (“until we meet again”). I realize that I am connected to this place and city and I believe that means there will be visits and homecomings of sorts. Please continue to remember me in your prayers, as I will remember the Cathedral in mine. In my absence, I hope that you all will continue to support our youth and children ministries of Christian formation, Fun Club, and EYC. Please support the adults who are giving of their time and talents for our younger parishioners. We will have Christian formation through April. Our Fun
Clubbers and youth will continue to get together for fun, food, and fellowship into May. Our rising 9th graders and up will participate in the Raise the Roof housing assistance program from June 25 through June 30. I am encouraged that several adults have committed to help with Raise the Roof this summer. On Sunday, February 19, the Cathedral will play host once more for a diocesan-wide youth event. We will be hosting youth from the diocese for the Neptune’s Daughters Mardi Gras Parade. There will be worship, fun, food, fellowship, and of course a parade. I do hope that our youth will come and have fun and make our guests feel right at home. If any would like to help us with this event, please contact me at your convenience. Last year, we had six churches visiting, with seventy-five youth and thirty-five adults in attendance. Our Fun Club will enjoy a trip to the Eastern Shore for laser tag and bowling on Sunday, February 12. Fun Club will have its own parade party on Monday, February 27. The Steeple Really is Coming! The crew from Ben M. Radcliff Contractor, Inc. has cut the Cathedral roof and installed a curb with a cap to allow for the installation of the structural steel support system for the steeple. One lane of Church Street has been blocked since Monday afternoon, January 23, to allow room for a crane to be set up. The entire Cathedral campus is accessible, with a detour only on Church Street. The small parking lot and the public parking on the south side of Church Street will remain open. The anticipated date for the arrival of the steeple is February. We will keep you posted on its arrival, and dates of installation.

Here at the cathedral, we have a front row seat here on parade route “A.” When I think about Mardi Gras and Carnival, I naturally relate it to music, specifically music at Christ Church. Carnival is a time of masks, some sad, some happy, some grotesque. These call to mind the idea of the humors, the set personalities that characterize the basic emotional forces within us. The Doctrine of the A ffections, originating at the end of the Renaissance, is a concept that was well known in the Baroque period in music (c. 1590-1750), and also was expressed in other art forms. Descartes, the famous 17th century philosopher, asserted that the six affections consisted of admiration, love, hatred, desire, joy, and sorrow. Of course, these could be combined to create emotions in between. Baroque composers sought to express these affections in music, often only representing one per piece. Some composers, however, were able to invoke multiple affections within one composition. In art, the affections are often depicted as people or masks.
Now that Christmas has come and gone, we find ourselves in the liturgical season after the Epiphany. The actual day of Epiphany is always observed on January 6, the first day after Christmastide, and it celebrates the visitation of the Magi to the Holy Family. Technically, the season that lasts from January 7 until the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday (Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras Day, etc.) is a part of Ordinary Time. It is linked to its counterpart, the long expanse of Sundays after When we listen to the music in our services during our Pentecost in the summer. This ministry of the Episcopal Church is for high school students from grades 10 through 12. Please pray for Leland Moore III and Sarah Bolt as they serve on staff and for Virginia Betbeze who will be attending the weekend as a candidate. We asked Leland to tell us a little about his Happening experience and he said, “To everyone wondering about what exactly this “happening” is that everyone keeps talking about. My happening experience went something like this: I showed up the first night surrounded by strangers and a few old friends with no idea what to expect. By the time I left I was in tears because of how close I had become to my family group that I had only met Friday night, and because of all that God had shown me at happening. I look forward to seeing all the newcomers this year and remember the best is yet to come!”
