THE MESSENGER CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL MOBILE, ALABAMA
A Message from the Dean Dear Cathedral Family, The end of the school year is close in sight, along with graduations and celebrations at all levels. This also spells the end of our program year in Christian Education, choirs, and youth groups here at Christ Church Cathedral. In this Messenger, Canon Wagner and Music Director Christopher Powell extend their thanks to all of our teachers, volunteers, and musicians. On Sunday, May 15, the Day of Pentecost, we will recognize and pray for our graduating seniors and express our thanks to all the folks who have kept our young people’s programs humming over the past program year. During our hospitality time, there will be hot dogs for everyone! I would like to express my special thanks to all the members of the Cathedral Family who have worked so hard this year to take our Cathedral hospitality to new heights. Their generous and gracious offerings have supported our music programs, our youth programs, our outreach, and our parish life. They have gone to special lengths to support the ministry of our new bishop, and for that I am especially thankful. The offering of comfort and care through food and drink and conversation and beautiful spaces is at the core of our ministry and supports everything we are and do.
Above all, I am thankful for the hard work of the Cathedral staff: Canon Dan Wagner, Provost Carolyn Jeffers, Music Director Christopher Powell, Choir Director Katie Powell, Financial Secretary Brenda Stanton, Parish Secretary Marla Reis, Assistant to the Provost Michelle Wilson, Youth Coordinator Sarah Bolt, Children’s Coordinator Corinne Betbeze, and Housekeeper Judy Jones. They rolled directly from last summer’s consecration into a busy year of programs and events without missing a beat. They are an incredible team who work together so smoothly and well that their work looks effortless. But it’s not! Please say “thank you” to them during the month of May and offer thanks for them and their ministry in your prayers. This summer will not be as full and busy as last year, but we will still be working to produce Vacation Bible School, and there will be organ concerts and youth events to look forward to. And, of course, the steeple work will go on. Mostly, we will be reviewing the past year and planning for the program year that will begin after Labor Day. But first, as this year of activity draws to a close, we will take time to give thanks for the year that was and the people who made it happen.
Faithfully, The Very Reverend Beverly F. Gibson, Ph.D., Dean

A M e s s a g e f r o m t h e C a n o n Pa s t o r Dear Cathedral Family, The month of May brings us warmer temperatures, more time over the bay and at the beach, high school and college graduations, and a winding down of our program year here at the Cathedral. I am so thankful for all the people who helped this year throughout the ministries that happen here at the Cathedral. First, I am very thankful to Sarah Bolt who has helped out a great deal with the youth program. Through her presence and ideas, she has helped to improve our youth ministry offerings. She is also a very good shot in paintball, just ask our youth! Last month, Sarah and I attended the annual Adults Who Work with Youth Conference put on by our Diocese. It was a good opportunity for us to learn from other youth ministers/workers and to hear from the guest speaker, Jamie Martin Currie, Missioner for Christian Formation (Diocese of Texas). I am very thankful to all the parents and adult parishioners that helped with our youth ministry this year. You all helped in a variety of ways: by chaperoning, cooking, setting up/taking down, driving youth, providing us a river house, and praying for our youth. For those parishioners who donated time, food, and money to ensure that our first ever lock-in and progressive dinner/fast were successes, thank you so much! Concerning our Sunday School teachers, thank you for all that you do! Thank you for saying yes to this ministry, for taking time out of your schedules to pray for your students, to prepare for class, and then teach on Sunday mornings. Our teachers and substitutes this year are Laura McLeod,
Eleanor Inge Baker, Sarah Bolt, Mary Carol Ladd, Banks Ladd, Lucy Moore, Alison Mitchell, Carl Cunningham, Jr., and Canon Wagner. Another big thanks goes out to Banks Ladd as he headed up the all “fun activities” of the Fun Club! Month in and month out, Banks would lead the children (with the help of some intrepid parents/chaperones) to events like downtown ice skating and the Little Sisters of the Poor Lawn Party. Thank you for your faithfulness and hard work! A big thank you goes out to all adults and youth who help with our Children’s Chapel ministry. Thank you goes to Corrine Betbeze who coordinates and to Kim Ellis, Skip Archer, Robbie Lynn Irvine, Barbara Mitchell, Jordan Chow, Rose Elliott, Tré Mitchell, Elinor Gibson, William Russell, and Anna Frances Weeks. I thank you for helping with our Sunday morning worship! Finally, I have a thank you in advance. Vacation Bible School (VBS) will be upon us in short order. It is being led by Alison Mitchell and will be taking place June 7 through 9. This year, our program is entitled Egypt: Joseph’s Journey from Prison to Palace. We could use your prayers, donation of time and talents, and for your children and grandchildren to come and participate. Please tell others about VBS! Have a great May everyone, and I hope to see you at church! Blessings,
The Reverend Canon Daniel A. Wagner Canon Pastor dwagner@christchurchcathedralmobile.org

Kudos to the Powells Katherine Powell was named an Escambia County School District Fine Arts Champion of the Arts. Her award was for “innovative pedagogy and advocacy for technology in music.” The award was presented at an end of the year reception at the J. E. Hall Center in Pensacola on May 3. On April 18, Christopher Powell was the organist for a concert entitled A Prayer for Peace: Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms with the University of West Florida Singers at First Baptist Church of Pensacola. This link is available for the concerts through May 8: http://www.uwfsingers.com/ videos.html
Dear friends in Christ, Recently, I had the opportunity to sit and reflect for a while (now that things are slowing down after Easter Sunday), and as I frequently do, I began to grapple with what it is that makes great art in any medium. So often those on “the inside” of an artistic field chalk greatness up to the history of a work. Certainly it is a role of the artist to preserve the works of others, and in an historical context, old or ancient art works are of inestimable value. However, is this really what makes something great? I started to wonder if great art is great not so much due to what it preserves as

because of what it provokes. Try as we might, we’ll never know for sure what was in the mind of the artist when creating a piece, but we certainly know how it affects us—this applies to comfortable and uncomfortable art equally and does explain how art can be uplifting, depressing, and everything in between! While preservation is essential, provocation is where “the rubber meets the road” for me. What does an artwork cause you to
Here at Christ Church Cathedral, we have created a dizzying amount of musical art this year with the intent to elicit a reaction. From Advent Lessons and Carols through Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, and Easter, our musicians have created music for nearly every mood in both service and concert. Some treasured choir members have moved away while new faces have been a joy to us amidst the farewell. We have worked together on Wednesdays and Sundays almost every week of the program year, and I am personally grateful to every member of our team. Special thanks go to our Choir Director, my wife, Katherine Powell. Her dedication to instructing and conducting our choir continues to be a foundational element of our music program.

excellence can’t exist without the understanding and support of the congregation, clergy, and staff. Beautiful church music can lift our souls to God and ennoble our liturgy, and it is a joy to serve as Music Director and Organist here.
Above: Violinists Enen Yu and Gosha Leska
Special thanks also to Stephanie Hopper for keeping us organized and neat this year as our Music Librarian—the importance of her help is hard to overestimate! Our staff singers have continued to travel from as far as Pascagoula to the west and Pensacola and Milton to the east and right here in Mobile to be a part of our ministry, and we thank them. In a very real sense, our program couldn’t continue with any resemblance of its current quality without their unwavering support and leadership. Our staff violinist, Gosia Leska, has been a joy to work with, and I am thankful to have her with us. The Handbell Choir has grown this year and continues to ring praises throughout the program year. They work hard to enrich our worship with joyful sounds! I’m grateful to the clergy and staff of this church for their support, leadership, and partnership in ministry. Christ Church is unusual in its quality of music and the interest of the congregation in this. Our historic commitment to
I also wish to thank all who contributed to our Friends of Cathedral Music and Cathedral Organ Fund this year. Our ministry could not function without your support. Your gifts of financial support and time are much appreciated and a vital part of our music program! Thank you for your generosity and your gift of music to our congregation and the city. I would be remiss not to thank our guest musicians who participated in our concert series and special services. Their contribution to our liturgies and concerts was wonderful—we had a great year. We hope to see them return soon. In closing, I think our music here at Christ Church Cathedral does have intrinsic historical value (due in no
small part to its nearly 200-year lineage), but the most important part of our ministry is the people who create it, support it, and hear it. Great art is our goal, and it is intended to elicit a response in the performer and listener alike. Even a simple hymn sung by a choir and congregation can be one of the most powerful experiences in sacred
music, provoking a response of the soul. I can’t wait to continue our musical journey together.
Peace in Christ,
Christopher W. Powell Organist and Music Director

Outreach UnitedThank Offering Ingathering, Sunday May 8 United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of the Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through United Thank Offering, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. United Thank Offering is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings, and to distribute the UTO monies to support mission and ministry throughout the Episcopal Church and in invited Provinces of the Anglican Communion in the developing world. UTO is a project of the Episcopal Church Women. UTO materials are available on the Ministry table.

The Cathedral Mission Statement The Cathedral is the spiritual center of the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast. The Cathedral is a dynamic and evolving church that serves as a liturgical, educational, and pastoral center for Diocesan life. It serves as a visible symbol of unity and promotes growth, hope, and a deepening trust in the Lord. The Cathedral is a place where the Gospel of Jesus Christ will be faithfully preached and responded to, and it will model new concepts and ideas for education, evangelism, and outreach to which the Gospel calls us.
