ANNUAL PARISH MEETING AND VESTRY ELECTIONS Sunday, December 1 during Coffee Hour. Please plan to attend.

As we catch our breath after a busy October, we slow down a bit in November to offer thanks to God for our blessings in the Cathedral family. The Celebration of New Ministry on October 12 was a glorious day, about which I have more to say, along with pictures and highlights, in an insert in this edition of The Messenger. Our stewardship program for 2014, Growing in Grace: Becoming Faithful Stewards is wrapping up its final phase and appears to be a positive indicator of our health and growth. We enjoyed wonderful stewardship speakers each Sunday in October, and we give thanks for Sage and Preston Bolt, Rebecca and Chip Tait, Carol and Bill Rodgers, and Brie and Grant Zarzour. I am thankful for Wardens Leslie Ladd and John McClelland and their leadership, and for the stewardship leadership team and their willingness to canvass every household. I am thankful for every household and individual who has turned in a pledge card—and would remind those of you who have not that today would be a great day for you to do so! Your Vestry Nominating Committee completed their good work in discerning a strong slate of nominees for the Vestry election at our Annual Meeting, as well as a slate of nominees for delegates to diocesan convention. I am thankful for the abundance of strong and gifted leaders among us here at Christ Church Cathedral . In this edition of The Messenger you will find more information about the re-envisioned Pastoral Care teams that have been in the works for several months now. I am thankful for the many servant ministers who are willing to share their time and gifts in these ministries. You will have the opportunity to find out more and to volunteer for any of these ministries on both Sunday, November 17 and at the Dean’s Forum on Sunday, November 24. I hope you will join us for Thanksgiving Day Ecumenical Services at Big Zion AME Church (112 South Bayou Street) on Thursday, November 28 at 10:00 a.m. Yours truly will be the preacher and our offering will go to Family Promise of Coastal Alabama. Above all, I am thankful for the love of Christ that I have known through all the members of the Cathedral family and for the promise of hope in Christ for our life together here. Faithfully, The Very Rev. Beverly F. Gibson, Ph.D. Dean

UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA PRESS TO PUBLISH A HISTORY OF THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN THE STATE

Page 14

To be elected at the Parish Meeting on Sunday, December 1

January 17, 18 & 19, 2014 at St. Paul’s, Daphne

A new history of the Episcopal Church in Alabama being published by the University of Alabama Press. The author, the Rev. Barry Vaughn, is an Alabama native and was until recently a parish priest in Birmingham. Kit Caffey and the Rev. Albert Kennington, both involved in the founding of the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast in the 1960s, assisted Vaughn in his research. Bishops, Bourbons, and Big Mules, as the history is called, tells how the Episcopal Church gained influence over Alabama’s cultural, political, and economic arenas despite being a denominational minority in the state. Although it has usually claimed roughly one percent of the state’s population, close to 10 percent of Alabama’s governmental and business leaders have been Episcopalians.

Looking Ahead.

Ve s t r y N o m i n e e s ( P ro p o s e d Cl a s s o f 2 0 1 6 )

Vaughn notes that many of these leaders came to the Episcopal Church from other Christian denominations, perhaps due to the church’s doctrinal latitude and understanding attitude toward human frailty. At 280 pages in hardcover, Bishops, Bourbons, and Big Mules will retail for $49.95 (or $34.97 in ebook format), but a 30 percent discount is available through November 11. Add a $5.00 shipping charge for the first book and $1.00 for each additional book in the same order. To order at the discounted rate, pick up a form on the bulletin board. GROWING IN GRACE: B ECOMING F AITHFUL S TEWARDS S TEWARDSHIP P LEDGE R EPORT Out of 245 households in the Cathedral family, we have received 2014 pledges from 97. Last year’s total by year-end was 139. Based on last year’s numbers, we would be expecting 42 more pledges to come in before year’s end. But we can do better! If you have not yet turned in your pledge card, please do so. If you have never made a pledge, please make this the year you begin; the amount is not as important as the commitment. If 75% of our households pledged, that would be 183 pledges—an admirable goal, and one we can achieve. The total dollar amount of pledges received so far is $452,440. Last year’s total was $621,990. Increase in existing pledges to date is $35,800. We have received 8 new pledges so far. As we begin planning and preparation for 2014 ministries and the budget to support them, it would be helpful to have all pledges in hand. More importantly, however, it would be a powerful statement of our faith and hope for the future of Christ Church Cathedral if every household made a commitment to support our life here together and our mission to our community.

YOUTH CONFIRMATION At the end of the Australian confirmation service, the Bishop says, “All who have been baptized and confirmed are called to study the Bible, to take part in the life of the Church, to share in the Holy Communion and to pray faithfully and regularly.” Our confirmation class curriculum, I Will With God’s Help, reinforces that theme. In response to study of the Bible, the members of the class will read the Gospel of Luke over the course of the year. This is an invitation to you to join them in the discipline. Reading Schedule: Luke Chapters 1 - 6 Before Sunday, December 8 Luke Chapters 7 - 12 Before Sunday, January 12 Luke Chapters 13 - 18 Before Sunday, February 9 Luke Chapters 19 - 24 Before Sunday, March 16

The Confirmation class will be working with the Fun Club on Sunday November 17 after Christian Education to prepare the FIT Angel Tree.

We are looking for a chair. Members: Cart Blackwell, Katherine Deaton, Valerie Hines, Robbie Lynn Irvine, Chris Kelly, Betty Reniewicz The team will lovingly care for those who due to age or illness cannot always be with us in the Body, to remind them of their importance to our community. Team members will visit in homes bringing cards (from the Prayer Card Ministry) and/or flowers (from the Flower Ministry). Special gestures would be made during Advent and Lent when additional meals prepared for the luncheons will be sent as reminders of our love and prayers. Committee members will serve as “shepherds” to individuals to check in with them regularly.

FLOWER MINISTRY TEAM Homer McClure, Chair Members: Betty Coale, Valerie Hines, Ann Luce This group will arrange flowers (and enclose cards from the Prayer Card Ministry) each week for those with pastoral care needs—those in hospitals or nursing care facilities, or who are ill, homebound, or bereaved. The Reverend Hyvenson Joseph from Food for the Poor will preach during the 10:00 a.m. Eucharist on November 10. Founded in 1982, Food for the Poor is an interdenominational Christian ministry working to end suffering of the poor in 17 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. The organization provides food for the starving, but also builds homes for the destitute, digs wells for water, provides medicine to the sick and elderly, and supports orphanages and education for children. They have shipped more than 63,000 tractortrailer loads of necessities and built more than 84,000 housing units. They have been recognized for their exemplary efficiency and stewardship by several charitable watchdog organizations. More than 95% of all donations received go directly to programs to help the poor. For more information, visit www.FoodForThePoor.org or pick up a brochure from the ministry table. Many thanks to Jamie and John Davidson and Joy and Bob Dean for serving as hosts for Father Joseph during his visit.

GIVING BACK AT THANKSGIVING The Salvation Army of Coastal Alabama serves a traditional hot turkey and ham meal to anyone who would otherwise go without on Thanksgiving Day. Chef Cecil Morris and his staff prepare to feed 1,000 people each year. It takes a week of preparation and nearly 100 volunteers to serve our restaurant-style meal. Then about four weeks later, we do it all over again for Christmas Day! The meals are served from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at our headquarters, 1009 Dauphin Street.

The Salvation Army relies on the generous donations and food drives from our community to make the Holiday Dinners possible. Please call 251.438.1625 if you can help us provide this holiday tradition for those in need.
