THE MESSENGER C HRIST C HURCH C ATHEDRAL M OBILE, A LABAMA

A Message from the Dean Dear Cathedral Family, “After Labor Day,” we say during the summer, “not until after Labor Day.” Well, it’s after Labor Day now! The program year here at Christ Church Cathedral officially begins on Sunday, September 11, with what we call “Rally Day.” That is the day that we come back from our summer recreations and gather to begin the work of a new year of ministry together. Sunday School and youth groups begin again for our young people, and we organize ourselves for what the year holds in store. This year holds a great deal. After worship on Rally Day, we will gather in the Chapter House for an informal parish meeting. You will hear an update on the progress of the steeple restoration project, and there will be information for parents about some innovations in our Christian formation programs, as well as a report and sign-up opportunities for the ministries of the Episcopal Church Women.

The centerpiece of this meeting will be a presentation about the primary work of the year ahead. This fall we will be engaged in a feasibility study to determine how best to move forward with the completion of the master plan for our facilities, which was approved in 2009. Jim Barganier, of Barganier Davis Sims Architects, the designer of the master plan, will be present to explain the remaining elements of campus renovation and improvement. Tom Hanrahan, president of Southeastern Advancement Services, will explain the process of the feasibility study to take place this fall. You will all be receiving further information about this process via mail and email, and more information will be published in upcoming Messengers. With the setting of our massive steeple and the completion of the Mardi Gras Park in front of Christ Church, we are beginning a new era of visibility and connection to downtown Mobile. I believe our call at the present moment is to consider prayerfully how best to open ourselves to the community and the opportunities around us, so that we can share God’s love through the beauty of art and worship and the gift of this historic property. Please pray for our faithful fulfillment of this obligation. Faithfully, The Very Reverend Beverly F. Gibson, Ph.D., Dean

A M e s s a g e f r o m t h e C a n o n Pa s t o r Dear Cathedral Family, August has given way to September, and life at the Cathedral is ramping up once more with our program offerings. Later this month, we will have Rally Day and begin our program year. Please allow me this moment to mention our Christian formation, Fun Club, EYC activities. Rally Day will be a time for our children and youth to meet their Sunday School teachers and for our EYC to talk about the upcoming year. I give thanks to God that we have some wonderful Christian Formation offerings for our children and youth and we have some wonderful teachers. This year, we will continue to use lectionary-based Christian formation materials for two of our Sunday School classes; Fun Club and Senior High. We are bringing back Godly Play for our Elementary Class (K-2). We will continue to offer Weaving God’s Promises for our Middle School class. So from Kindergarten through High School, we have learning opportunities. For a more detailed listing of our learning opportunities, please turn to page 4 of this newsletter. It is my hope that Christian Formation and children and youth activities are not just “one more thing to do” for families. As I have said before, our society places a lot of demands on us and it is not my goal to place another “burden” of our parishioners. Indeed, in a recent sermon, Dean Gibson said that she wanted our families to enjoy Sabbath time, so families could enjoy time together, relax, and get ready for the coming week. That is why we offer Fun Club and EYC activities mainly right after church. But, it is my hope that parents and grandparents will support our efforts and allow their children and youth to explore their faith and have some fun along the way.

My hope is that our offerings are avenues for spiritual growth for our younger parishioners. Our children and youth have an active role in our parish. They enjoy Sunday school, being acolytes, and participating in the Fun Club and EYC groups. Our children and youth have worked hard in the area of outreach with last year’s Pancake Breakfast to benefit the Fuse Project and Brunch to benefit the Kappa League’s college entrance exam preparation. This year, our youth will be doing another outreach project, in conjunction with the Confirmation Class, to help the Kappa League. We are excited to continue this partnership in an effort to raise money for a scholarship program for the Kappa League. For our Fun Club, we want our 3rd to5th graders to have the experience of doing group activities and learn more about their faith. For our EYC, we want to cultivate a safe and joyful environment where our youth can explore their faith and build friendships. This year, our goal for EYC is do fun and formative events with our own group, participate with other local EYC groups, and engage with youth from the whole diocese. Parents and Grandparents, I encourage you all to look at our formation opportunities and bring your children and youth on Sundays. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. If anyone is interested in helping with our youth or assist as a substitute teacher, I would love to hear from you as well. Have a great September everyone, and I hope to see you at church! Faithfully,

The Reverend Canon Daniel A. Wagner Canon Pastor dwagner@christchurchcathedralmobile.org

M us i c M i n i s t r y Dear friends in Christ, We are in the midst of an exciting time in the life of our parish. Rally Day begins our new program year, our steeple will be returning this fall, our 2016-2017 Music Season began last month, and you should have received your music season booklet in the mail by now. It lists all of our concerts and special events for the whole season, so keep it handy! The choir has resumed rehearsals on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m., the bell choir is practicing at 5:45 p.m., and we are excited to be together once again to make music for God and for all of you. There are several things especially exciting about our new season. Here is a quick list.

 One of our top priorities is to reestablish our Children’s Choir this season. We hope this will become the foundation of the Cathedral Choir School, a system of choirs that form a comprehensive ministry to our parish and an outreach ministry to the city.

 There are three opportunities to financially support our music ministry. Friends of Cathedral Music donors support our concert series and guest artists at special services. Cathedral Organ Fund donors support maintenance and improvements of our historic pipe organ. Now, there is an opportunity to create named choral scholarships at the cathedral. (See the Music Season booklet for more information.)

 Musically, we are focusing on a special theme this year, “Oh, sing to the Lord a new song.”

The majority of our choral and handbell music will be drawn from the works of living composers. Certainly, we will still continue offering music from all time periods, but this special emphasis this season is a great way to support church music composers at work today.

 We

have streamlined our concert series to create what may be our best season yet. All of our ensembles and guest artists will have something special to share.

 There

will be more opportunities to experience new and exciting things in our liturgies. From services like Above: Look for the music season booklet in your Lessons and Carols and Choral mailbox and on-line. Evensong to alternate ways of singing the psalms and canticles, there will be fresh CHOIR REHEARSALS sounds to inspire us in worship. WEDNESDAYS IN THE HUGER HOUSE Needless to say, this is an exciting time to be part of the cathedral’s Cathedral Handbells at 5:45 p.m. music ministry. Please consider Cathedral Choir at 6:30 p.m. joining one of our choirs. You do not need to read music or be a Please consider if you or someone you musician to join. Introducing Godly Play for Grades K-2 We are excited to be bringing Godly Play back to the curriculum for our youngest students. Bible stories and seasonal lessons are presented using objects for the story. The group sits on the floor and acts out the narrative. This Montessori based method helps the children live within the stories. Eleanor Inge Baker and Laura McLeod will teach Godly Play. Please drop into classroom—the big one in the middle upstairs— and share the fun.

Kids Just Want to Have Fun! Fun Club is our class for students in grades 3, 4, and 5. Outside of the classroom they meet monthly for a group activity that helps them to learn about their faith and just have plain ole fun. In the classroom Fun Club will use Feasting on the Word: Teaching the Revised Common Lectionary, a curriculum that helps classes explore one of the lectionary passages for the day. Their study this year will be enhanced by the use of their doodle books. Their classroom is upstairs above the Chapter House on the back right. Mary Carol Ladd, Lucy Moore, and Katie Garth are the teachers. Jubal Hamil and Sarah Bolt will lead the group activities.

Yo u th Co n f ir ma t io n At Christ Church Cathedral we begin confirming students in grade 6. All students grade 6 and up are invited to join the class to either lead to confirmation or to learn more about The Episcopal Church. The confirmation class meets once a month throughout the year in the Cathedral office to study the lessons from I Will with God’s Help, a program based on the Baptismal Covenant. This group will use doodle books to help them process what they are hearing during the service. They meet with the other classes for group education, and they help with an outreach project. All classes missed will have scheduled make-ups. Carolyn Jeffers is our catechist. Confirmation will be on Sunday, May 7.

Weaving God’s Promises Into the Lives of Our September Christian Formation Calendar Christian Formation resumes on September 11, and will go Middle Schoolers through May 14, 2017. Be sure to check the calendar for the Youth in grades 6, 7, 8 meet upstairs in the first room on the left, the room with the big round window. They will continue to use Weaving God’s Promises, a curriculum developed and written exclusively for the Episcopal Church. The class enhances the lessons the students learn in the confirmation class concerning their personal faith formation. They learn that God’s promise of salvation is inextricably woven into our lives. The goal of Weaving God’s Promises is to teach children the way of Christ, not only in the church but also in the world, and to give them a solid grounding for future youth formation programs, which in turn will prepare them for Christian adulthood. Alison Mitchell will again teach this class.

High School Rocks! Our youth in grades 9, 10, 11, 12 have their own space downstairs beneath the Chapel. They inhabit their space anytime they gather. Cn. Wagner and Carl Cunningham use Feasting on the Word for Youth as a curriculum to help them figure out who they are as they search for whose they are. Much of their time together helps them explore their personal and communal identity in Jesus Christ. Our youth are challenged to put their faith into action as they grow to understand themselves as Christ’s disciples. Each session includes a media connection section that ties the week’s scripture passage to a film, video, song, or website.

“holiday” Sundays when classes will not meet. Monthly the classes will gather for a group-wide class that allows our youth the opportunity to learn and participate together. For any questions about the Christian Formation offerings, please contact Canon Wagner.

ACOLYTE FESTIVAL SATURDAY, AUGUST 20, 2016 CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL MOBILE, ALABAMA Bells rang, incense burned, vestments were everywhere when 150 people descended on Christ Church Cathedral on August 20 for the Acolyte Festival. The organ sounded amazing when the Olympic anthem was played at the beginning of the Acolyte Olympics, in which one of our teams won a bronze medal! The workshop sessions went well, and everyone enjoyed all of the food. The afternoon culminated in a service with a grand processional including all of the vested acolytes. It was a sight to behold. We appreciate all of the volunteers who made our campus so welcoming: Al and Jill Chow for the yummy grilled hot dogs; Sarah Bolt and Janie Chow for keeping everyone moving; Lyn Bennett, Barry Weeks, and Barbara Archer for Altar Guild; Kay Whiting for the altar flowers; our ushers, Banks Ladd, Bart Elliott, Carl Cunningham, Jubal Hamil; in the kitchen, Judy Henson and Lisa Williams; and all around helpers Shannon Harris, Lucy Moore, Mary Carol Ladd, Lissa Watkins, and the Cathedral staff.

Acolyte Festival Workshops I.

Processions

We will discuss and practice protocols for lining up a liturgical procession. Since everyone attending is already an acolyte and comes with experience in their own churches, we will share some of what we each know and focus on a few particulars that may be most helpful to all. II.

Instructed Eucharist

Have you ever wondered what the priest is doing at the altar during Holy Eucharist? We will go step by step through the preparation of the altar and a Eucharistic prayer to help gain an understanding of what is happening. You will not look at the Eucharist the same! III.

Holy Smoke

This is a hands-on session of all things a thurifer needs to know – lighting coals, preparing incense, when incense is used, how to handle the thurible and incense boat.

The Bishop’s Message to the Acolytes Welcome to our diocesan Acolyte Festival! I am glad that you are here, and I am grateful for your ministry. Today is a celebration of your ministry at God’s altar. In several ways, serving as an acolyte matters. From left top: The day ended with a Eucharist with a grand processional. Acolytes brought and wore their vestments, and they brought their “holy hardware”. In our group picture: Barton, Kate, Elizabeth, Virginia, Maria, Jordan, Lawson, Rose, Tré, Charlie, Jordan, Anna Frances, Leland, and Cn. Dan.

For one thing, your priest needs help. It is our belief that a priest cannot consecrate the bread and wine without others present. Consecration is a communal act. So, when you stand at the altar you represent that belief. You are necessary. Most of all, you are representing the entire congregation. Your priest also needs help in practical ways. Episcopalians like ceremony. It is a way that we try to communicate that this meal is more significant than any other meal. Underneath the ceremony is the belief that beauty is sacred. You are a part of creating that beauty we seek to manifest. Finally, being an acolyte is important because you remind us older folks of our future. Not every church invites young people to be so integrally involved in the leadership of worship. That young people carry the cross, lead the procession, hold the Gospel, and assist with holy things, is a powerful statement of your importance in our church.

Clockwise from top left: Fr. Walt instructing acolytes on the procession, a group photo, Bp. Russell giving communion, in procession are Julianna, Kate, Elizabeth E., Elizabeth H., Walt, in the pew Rose, Tré, Charlie, Kate, Jordan.

All of this is to say that you matter. Your life matters; your service matters; your ministry as an acolyte matters. And today we are here to say thank you! I look forward to when I visit your church and we serve together. I hope that you have a great time today. +Russell

An Outline of the Faith The catechism, beginning on page 844 in the Book of Common Prayer, is primarily intended for use by parish priests, deacons, and lay catechists, to give an outline for instruction. It is a commentary on the creeds, but is not meant to be a complete statement of belief and practices; rather, it is a point of departure for the teacher, and it is cast in the traditional question and answer form for ease of reference. The second use of this catechism is to provide a brief summary of the Church's teaching for inquirers. We will include questions from the catechism in The Messenger throughout the year.

The Ministry Q.

What is the duty of all Christians?

A. The duty of all Christians is to follow Christ; to come together week by week for corporate worship; and to work, pray, and give for the spread of the kingdom of God.

Outreach Operation Backpack

A Letter from the ERD President Jonathan Myrick Daniels Pilgrimage Reflections From the group that went to Hayneville on August 13.

For Operation Backpack to be successful we need a lot of help along the way. It starts with setting up the donation tree. Thanks (above from left) to Elinor Gibson, Sadie Ladd, and Kappa League members, Kendrick Johnson, Kareem Cook, and Cameron McIntosh for preparing the tree. Then each of you contributes either supplies or money that are organized and packed into the new backpacks (Below: Tre Mitchell, Elinor Gibson, Julianna Ramo, Annabelle Ramo, Charlie Ramo). And finally, we deliver filled backpacks to 17 happy students. We had another great project. Thank you all.

The experience in Hayneville was something very moving. I really enjoyed the sermon. Bishop Santosh Marray’s (Diocese of Alabama) words were true; we are all children of one God. The God who made me is the God who made you. No matter what our differences, we can all share in the same love that God gives us. Janie Chow

Thank you for your commitment to Episcopal Relief & Development’s mission—and choosing to live out your faith by helping people in need. It fills us with hope and heartfelt gratitude, especially this year. We'll admit, the last year has been difficult. But amidst all the suffering that seems to dominate our news every day, there is also so much progress being made. We needed to share that story with you too. Thanks to our compassionate supporters, we've been able to partner with Anglican Communion and ecumenical organizations worldwide to empower families, strengthen communities and help children thrive. We've also been able to respond to disaster both at home and abroad. Please take a moment to read about all of our initiatives and programs in this year's annual report. http://www.episcopalrelief.org/whowe-are/financials. Thank you again for your continuing support and prayers, and for joining us in our work to heal a hurting world. Sincerely,

I really became aware of the martyrdom of Jonathon Myrick Daniels through the late Rev. Mark Wilson at St. James in Fairhope. Father Mark was passionate in telling about the events that happened in Hayneville in the 1960's and the resulting changes that came about. I wanted to visit Hayneville and try to understand the ultimate sacrifice made by Jonathon. Being there and seeing the town along with the prayers and walking to the various sites with the different readings and singing gospel hymns was a very moving experience. Douglas Kearley

Resolution Concer ning C o nve n t i o n D e l e g a t e s Rather than electing a new slate of four (4) persons to serve in this capacity each year, the terms of service will be staggered among the delegates. One (1) person will be elected each year to rotate onto our delegation for a 4-year term. This will allow for both continuity of experience and service within the delegation, while allowing more people to participate in this important ministry. Resolution to Christ Church Cathedral Vestry approved November 20, 2011.

It is important to thank our vestry members for their service. They meet, regularly, with the Bishop and others who do work for the Cathedral, and they serve us in many ways.
