Faith Comes by Hearing By The Very Rev. Carol Wade

By

L THE VERY REVEREND CAROL WADE Dean & Rector

... faith also comes by hearing as God is revealed in the length and width and height and depth of the words and music of worship.

FROM THE DEAN

ike all cathedrals, York Minister has its own sacred rhythms. The building itself is a visual prayer. There is a sacred pull and upward thrust to this cruciform masterpiece that inspires awe. As one of the biggest cathedrals in Northern Europe, its wide Decorated Gothic Nave and Perpendicular Gothic Quire create a sacred pathway to one of its crowning glories, the Great East Window, the largest expanse of medieval glass in the world. The visual splendor of York’s architecture invites chance meetings with The Holy at every turn. It is no wonder that Bernard of Clairvaux, the great medieval Cistercian founder, once exclaimed, “What is God? God is length and width and height and depth!” In the vast expanse of York Cathedral, seeing is believing; yet, there is more. In this living house of prayer, with its daily rhythms of worship, faith also comes by hearing as God is revealed in the length and width and height and depth of the words and music of worship. Bernard of Clairvaux insisted that only hearing can restore our vision. We learn to “see” by listening. In matters of faith, Bernard believed that hearing not only teaches us how to see, but, in fact, restores our sight and makes us whole. As I watched the many tourists and pilgrims make their way through York’s great cathedral visually admiring its majestic design, it was the power of the Holy Spirit flowing through the sung prayers of the Choir from Christ Church Cathedral Lexington that stopped the people in their tracks. During rehearsal, the people were captivated as they listened to our choir, and even surprised to find that later they had returned to hear more during worship. This seemed like no chance meeting, but rather a divine appointment with The Holy. Perhaps, as Bernard believed, it is in hearing that our sight is restored to see the goodness and glory of God.

With blessings,

WE PLAY!

A

By The Rev. Brent Owens

t Christ Church Cathedral play, is something we value. In fact, play is even Biblical. Play and dance are the subjects of Psalm 150: “Praise the Lord with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise the Lord with tambourine and dance; praise him with string and pipe! Praise the Lord with clanging cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that breathes praise the Lord!” And in Ephesians (5:19), Paul talks about “singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts.” And in the Gospels there are many instances of Jesus taking time to go to dinner parties. It is in play that we get to know each other better. It is in play that we form the bonds of friendship. It is in play that our relationships with each other are deepened. It is among this communion of saints gathered here at Christ Church Cathedral that we play and praise the Lord, sometimes with music, but also with cookouts and baseball!

20’S & 30’S COOKOUT On Friday, June 27 about thirty of Christ Church Cathedral’s 20’s & 30’s Group gathered at the Owens’ house for a cook out and games. Dean Carol Wade hosted this event with the Owens family. Burgers were grilled, everyone brought something to share, and the game “washers” was played. As they say, “a good time was had by all.” BASEBALL, HOTDOGS & THE LEGENDS WIN! On Sunday, July 13, 40 Christ Church Cathedral members went to a Legends baseball game. Even one of the youngest members of the Cathedral, Evey Jarvis (she’s not even 1 yet!) had a great time. Many enjoyed the bounty of baseball park food: kettle corn, foot long hot dogs, soda, giant pretzels, peanuts, and ice-cold brews. The Legends played great, racking up a score of 6-0 against the Hagerstown Suns in the first 8 innings. But at the top of the 9th, the home team almost snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by giving up 5 runs. The Legends relief pitcher came in and saved the day. But win, lose or draw, the folks from Christ Church Cathedral had a lot of fun! Ϯ

COLLEGE

STARTING A NEW JOURNEY: Creating Your Sacred Rhythm By The Rev. Joe Mitchell

T

here are a number of milestones in our lives. One such milestone is beginning the exciting new journey of college life. For many of us it is the first time we have ever been away from home. And for this reason it can be a tumultuous time, with emotions running at a fever pitch. It is a comfort to know, then, that there is a safe place where we can go, a place of rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. It is a comfort to know that Episcopal Campus Ministry (ECM) is there to be our home away from home as we go on this thrilling, but sometimes frightful, journey. It is in the midst of this journey that we create our sacred rhythms and grow in our relationships with God and find who God is calling us to be.

8 / PRAYER AND ACTION_AUGUST 14

College is a time of questions, about God and about life. College is a time of exploration, of faith and of oneself. At Episcopal Campus Ministry students are given the opportunity to question and to explore. This year our conversations will ask those tough questions about where God is in our lives and where do we see our lives going. We will engage one another in thoughtful conversation, enjoy one another’s company at campus sporting and social events, and find our center at quiet, contemplative worship services. If you are looking for a safe, open, and welcoming community where you can ask your questions, explore who you are, and engage with folks your age, then Episcopal Campus Ministry is right for you! For University of Kentucky students, our meeting place, St. Augustine’s Chapel (472 Rose St.) will be open throughout K-Week (August 23-30). You can also find us at the New Student Fair on August 28, where you can hear about our plans for the year (and pick up a free t-shirt)! We will also be at the Student Involvement Fair at Transylvania University on September 3. Come see how Transy students can get involved in the life of Christ Church Cathedral (and pick up a free t-shirt)! You can find out more about Episcopal Campus Ministry by checking out our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/EpiscopalCampusMinistryOfLexington. Wherever you are on your journey, join us and create your sacred rhythm at Episcopal Campus Ministry! Ϯ

THE RHYTHMS OF OUR LIVES: The Young Adult Church Journey

I

n the previous two years the number of young adults attending and being involved in the life of Christ Church Cathedral has grown exceptionally. Why is that?? Some may think it is because we have adopted new programs like Date Night (which will be offered the first Friday of every month starting this fall) or Hospitality at Home. Others may think it is because we have such strong showings for our “come as you are” bi-weekly gathering of Theology on Tap (and Sushi Fridays during Advent and Lent). Still others may say it is because we have promoted our ministry on Facebook, Twitter, and our website. But these are just programs, and they only go so far. The real reason our ministry has grown is the sharing of stories and experiences. The place where the ministry grows is not the pub or church building. It is in the thin places that exist in our conversations. It is in these thin places that we create the sacred rhythms of our lives. Here we meet each other and meet God. “I did not grow up Episcopalian,” said Bethany Packard, a professor at Transylvania University and member of the Cathedral Young Adults group. “But from the moment I came to a Theology on Tap I was welcomed and knew I had found a group that knew where I was coming from. I could share my story and hear others. “

By The Rev. Joe Mitchell

Not only was Bethany able to share her story and hear others, but she invited a colleage to join her! “Unlike Bethany, I’ve been an Episcopalian a long time,” said Becky Fox, a biology professor at Transy, “and when she invited me to hang out with this group, I was ecstatic! I’ve started singing with the Schola choir and am absolutely loving it!” But what does Becky value most? “I can be who I am here.” Creating our sacred rhythms is about being who we are, finding our home, and offering God’s abundant welcome. There is no other program that does that! It is only when we meet each other and share our stories that we can create those rhythms and see God in new and exciting ways! So come join the Cathedral Young Adults for one of our gatherings and discover the sacred rhythms of your life! Ϯ

GONE FISHING! Brownell Retires By The Very Rev. Carol Wade

H

ired in September 1981, Brownell Haddix, Jr. has been Christ Church Cathedral’s faithful Sexton. After nearly 33 years, Brownell has decided it’s time to do something else, and he is retiring at the end of July. The word “sexton” isn’t one that we often use, but a sexton in the Episcopal Church is “An officer of the church charged with the maintenance of its buildings… and custodian of its sacred objects.” Brownell has been a constant at Christ Church Cathedral. He has lovingly cared for the buildings and sacred objects of the Cathedral, as well as the many who have worshipped here and been a part of the life of this parish. A photo of Brownell snow blowing the Cathedral’s sidewalks was even on the front page of the Lexington Herald Leader newspaper last winter. New members Jackie and Wes Justice and their daughter Kennedy said that they decided to visit Christ Church Cathedral after seeing Brownell in the newspaper and reading that he worked at the Cathedral. Brownell often goes well beyond the call of duty to care

10 / PRAYER AND ACTION_AUGUST 14

for the Cathedral, its members, and those who come to this holy place seeking assistance. He is always present to prepare for and clean up after the multitude of special services we have such as weddings, funerals, ordinations, confirmations, and Diocesan events, as well as services at special times of the year such as Holy Week, Easter and Christmas. It has been said by many that we couldn’t have had a more trustworthy and conscientious person as our Sexton than Brownell. This is reflected in that we even have a beautiful blue cross-stitched kneeler made in Brownell’s honor, which says, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” What’s next for Brownell? Fishing is the theme for Brownell as he intends to fish as much as he can with his dog Jazz. Brownell loves to fish and boat, and is a member of the Woodford Fishing Lake. We are collecting a purse for Brownell for his long and faithful service to Christ Church Cathedral. Please note in the memo line of your check that it is for Brownell. We give thanks and praise for Brownell’s good and faithful ministry as Christ Church Cathedral’s Sexton for these many years, and we pray for God’s blessings to be poured out on him in his retirement! lmost three years ago, the Cathedral music ministry received invitations from York Minster Cathedral and St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle to sing in their hallowed and historic houses of worship. This article is a series of recollections by choristers and chaperones meant to highlight our recent tour experiences "across the pond." I encourage you to delight in the challenges, joys, daily disciplines, spiritual awakenings and new friendships we forged together. What a joy and incredible privilege it was to lead such a talented and dedicated team of musicians and parents! -- Erich Balling, Canon Musician A fixture on Stonegate Road in York, the Purpleman is perched on his purple bicycle with purple hair, purple skin, purple everything. A tourist attraction himself, our younger boy choristers became friends with the man as our paths crossed several times each day walking to and from the Minster. On our last evening in York, we stopped to chat and drop some coins in his collection. Dressed in their white shirts, ties, and blue blazers, Purpleman told the boys that it was quite the honor to be singing in York Minster. The boys high-fived him,

and Purpleman continued to entertain the thousands of people passing by each day. As chaperones of the Christ Church Cathedral boys and girls choir on the recent trip to York and Windsor, we had the unique opportunity to witness firsthand the impact our choir has on regular people, even purple people. Running from here to there, keeping up with music folders, and searching for missing boy choristers' pants sometimes kept us from seeing how big an impact they really have. There was the English gentleman outside the souvenir shop who stopped to tell the boys he heard them sing at the Minster and how moved he felt by the music. Another man, originally from Cincinnati but now living in York, came out of his apartment as we walked to dinner to tell us he heard the choir singing at the Cathedral and asked if he could hear them practice. The front desk clerk at the hostel where all the kids stayed came to Evensong just to hear them sing. The waitress at the small Italian restaurant pleaded with the boys for them to sing after learning of their Minster engagement. They happily obliged to not only her delight, but the kitchen staff as well. As parents and chaperones, there is nothing quite like hearing 43 voices blend seamlessly in the centu-

ries old places of worship steeped in history and tradition. The real story, though, is that these boys and girls and men are touching lives around the world as they sing of God's glory, majesty, and love. The Purpleman got it right - quite an honor, indeed. -- John Dailey Since 2007, I have had the amazing opportunity to travel to England four times. Each trip has given me memories I will forever hold close to my heart. This summer, I was privileged to join the choir in York and in Windsor. This trip truly stood apart from the rest. Perhaps it was the growing friendships I’ve had since I was little, or even the fact I’m able to appreciate what our choir does for music ministry. Growing up, I thought music to be music, and nothing in between. But now I can see what the music we give out to the world really does. It changes people just as much as it does me. Music is a healing thing, which affects each of us in a different way. A tradition of mine in 2007 is that upon the very first step into a cathedral, I look up at the different godinspired ceilings which tell a story and intertwine with the music we sing. One of my favorite memories within the church had to be during one of my favorite piece of music, "Jesus So Lowly." As

CCCLEX.ORG / 13

we were singing the third verse, -- a more quiet and distinct one -- I looked up at the ceiling and saw these brilliant golden swirls lightly tracing into these indescribable shapes, and I felt this overwhelming sensation believing it to be God. I almost broke into tears. I heard these ringing coming from the voices around me that shook the room, a feeling I will absolutely never forget. One other memory that stood out vividly was my journey to the hospital, to be treated for tonsilitis, and having an amazing conversation with my two favorite people, the Ballings. I also got the chance to appreciate York for what it gave us and finally understood the miracle of finding this choir, because without it, I would not be where I am today. -- Brennan Burke

Touring with the choir in England was a surprisingly moving experience for me. Watching God work through the voices of the choir and building relationships with others caused the spirit to stir within me. During evening compline, Dean Wade would ask, "Where did you see God today?" The kids would talk about people they met, friends helping each other, solos -- moments of God's gifts each day. So I asked myself, "Where did I see God?" Taking part in services at York Minster -- the music, the smells, and the sermon -- all came together to move me to tears. This would be the norm for the next ten days. Almost always it was a particular song that brought me to this point. After the services as we walked through the streets, my son Alden, a chorister, would say, "I knew

The real story, though, is that these boys and girls and men are touching lives around the world as they sing of God's glory, majesty, and love. 14 / PRAYER AND ACTION_AUGUST 14

you would like that song the best." Talking with others I realized I was not the only one having this experience. On a daily basis people would stop and ask if we were the choir singing at the Minster. One evening, while walking down a back alley, miles from the cathedral, a young man stepped out of his apartment, out of breath from running down steps. As it turns out, he was from Cincinnati and he wanted to thank us for Evensong. He said he planned to attend the next evening as well. It was times like this that I saw the Holy Spirit working, both in me personally, as well as through us as a group. This was evident in the people I met in the places we visited and also as I sat through services talking to those who came to worship. Their stories seemed more than just coincidence. -- James Beers This is the first time I've ever been out of the country, so everything felt more fun than if this was my second time. The plane was

fun (and, as expected, the food on the plane was terrible). I also learned a lot of stuff on this trip. It might help me with my world history later in my educational career. I got to take tours of York, the Minster, London, Jorvik, Tower of London, Windsor Castle, and Castle Howard. My family has never been out of the country. So it was awesome being the first three to go out of the country. Also, I learned to cherish every minute of your life, because it doesn't last forever. England was really fun, but I'm just glad to be back in the land of the free and the home of the brave. My dad and brother really had fun because they probably cherished the time in England. They might not be able to go back to England. The cathedrals we sang in, I can't put that experience in words. It was just so fun. The history of it goes back to the Romans. Kings and queens maybe sat in those cathedrals. We didn't get to perform for the Queen, but I can only imagine if we did. This choir is one of the few boys choirs in the United States and has opened up a lot of opportunities

for me, and probably for the whole choir. At my age, going to England would be like a desire, instead of something that could actually happen. So thank you to all the people that made this trip possible. -- Virgil Lewis Anyone who watched the choristers play in a park at sunset with Windsor Castle in the background would have thought they were thirty ordinary kids. However, these young people are anything but ordinary. It is amazing as a chaperone and parent to watch the discipline and dedication these choristers have to their mission of sharing God’s word through music. Traveling with any group is always challenging - but traveling with this group was a gift. They are an extraordinary talented group of young women and men who genuinely enjoy being members of Christ Church Cathedral choir. No complaint was heard about rehearsal time for they know they are rewarded with the beautiful music they make as the sound rings through York

Minster. Visitors to the Minster were greeted with the amazing music as well as moved by experiencing this music. As a chaperone, I was so proud of this choir and quite in awe of their music. I also was so happy to get to know these young people better. They worked hard together but they also really enjoyed being together as friends. You see lots of smiling faces on this tour in the pictures taken because there were a lot of smiles on this trip. We as a church should be very proud of the services they sang in England as well as how well they represented us. These young choristers, along with the men of the choir, are truly ambassadors of our church and we are blessed to enjoy their amazing talent each Sunday. -- Amanda Naish ĎŽ

am excited as we look toward beginning youth group this fall. We will begin our year on September 14, with a retreat at the Old Episcopal Burial Ground, where we will enjoy a picnic, games, the labyrinth, and worship. Our regular youth group meetings will resume on September 21 in the Youth Activities Room from 6-7pm. Here we will enjoy a delicious dinner (provided by our wonderful parents), exhilarating and creative games, theological reflection and small group discussion, and youth lead worship. Our theological discussions will cover a variety

of topics, looking at popular culture and difficult questions, while seeking to develop and grow our spiritual lives. With the worship team in mind, it is the hope to create a youth worship team, complete with music ensemble to lead us in song. If either the worship team or music is of interest to you please contact me (kbyrd@ccclex.org) and come to sign up for this new opportunity at the Youth and Parents Meeting on August 17th. GETTING READY FOR OUR STORY By Dr. Elizabeth Conrad

S

ummer at Christ Church Cathedral is always a busy time for me. The time is spent preparing – preparing the space so that those who enter are free to explore God. We are doing that as we prepare for adult formation, youth formation and children’s formation. Today, children are on my mind. A friend recently wrote to ask for suggestions in talking with his grandchildren about God. As I pondered this question, I kept coming back to Godly Play. Many of us think that we need to pour material into the empty vessels of our children. Our children are already filled with wonder for the world. If we stop to listen and just be with the child, we may just move a little closer to God. Many children are not taken seriously. Godly Play is the means of Christian Formation used for young children at Christ Church. Godly Play operates under the assumption that children already know God but have no language to name and describe that experience. The stories of our faith, told with manipulative figures, move children and story teller deeper into the story. We find ourselves in the story and what God may be saying to us. We wonder, grow and play together. This year we have a group of adults who have agreed to help maintain the rooms in an orderly fashion. The space as well as the story teaches. When the children cross the threshold of the classroom, they will see the Holy Family in

the center surrounded by the religious language (our stories) of our faith. The space is uncluttered, organized and stable – giving the child freedom to explore. Our first training is on Sunday, August 17th after the 11:00 service and will last until 3:30. Lunch will be provided. I welcome any of you to participate – just let me know! I might add that Godly Play is a method that is just as powerful for adults as it is for children for entering the story and exploring God. Ϯ
