FROM THE DEAN

Practicing RESURRECTION f Easter is not just one marvelous day, but fifty days of rejoicing, how then do we celebrate this great season? I take my cue from poet Wendell Berry’s evocative phrase, “practice resurrection!” The word “resurrection” in Greek literally translates to “the standing up again.” If God raises up fallen creation to stand in the fullness of God’s grace, what will you stand up for this season? And what will you stand against? Take a moment and think about that. These are powerful questions. One way to respond to these questions is to recall the behaviors we promise to take on as Christians every time we renew our baptismal covenant (Book of Common Prayer p. 304). These promises give us abundant examples of those practices of prayer, compassion and justice that help us stand together in strength, and against those things which separate us from God, ourselves and one another. There are many ways to practice resurrection at Christ Church Cathedral. The "Invite, Welcome, Connect" event—three great resurrection practices—is generating a great deal of creativity and energy for sharing the Gospel and the Cathedral we love. I hope you will consider offering your talents to one of the new invite, welcome or connect teams. The Habitat for Humanity run, walk, ride event, "The Ride Home," is another way to practice resurrection. Join us on Saturday, May 16, in the Great Hall for a

party and auction in support of the run, walk, ride event, and plan to come out on Saturday, May 23 to Coldstream Park to run, ride, or walk together as we endeavor to generate funds for our house-building project. Saturday’s event will culminate in a cookout with music and fun for all ages. So if you can’t run, ride or walk that day, come for the food and fellowship. As the great season of Easter unfolds against the backdrop of a glorious springtime, another resurrection practice is to notice what is blooming both within us and around us and give thanks for new life in Christ. By the time we reach Pentecost Sunday, fifty individuals will have been baptized, confirmed, received, or have reaffirmed their vows since the Great Vigil of Easter! What joy we share with them as they grow deeper in their faith journey at Christ Church Cathedral. With God’s help and in the power of the Spirit, together we are standing strong as we practice resurrection!

YOUTH

A COSTA RICA PILGRIMAGE By The Rev. Kate Byrd

n Sunday, April 26, Bishop Doug Hahn confirmed, received, and reaffirmed over 40 Epis¬copalians. It was a joyous and Spirit-filled occasion. Out of those, 13 were Cathedral Youth. These young people (Eleanor Clifton, Lauren Graf, Michael Naish, Eli Dunlap, Zach Jones, Holden Hall, Levi Lutz, Clay Fugate, Thomas Kikuchi, Crystal Owens, Grace Headley, Will Mullins, and Woods Prewitt) have been involved in our Youth Confirmation Process throughout this school year. The process involved meeting weekly with a mentor from the congregation (Kathy Dalton, Loys Mather, Garland Barr, Jim Ware, Alex Clay, Drew Byrd, Lisle Dalton, Matthew Lutz, Clay Dorsett, Tracey Meyers, Sarah Blanchett, Bernie Conrad, and Sarah Sloan) and participating in a retreat and six-week-course

program (led by Nell Campbell, Kenny Pierce, and Rick Anderson). That is in addition to completing community service, attending regular worship, and participating in ministries within the congregation. Their commitment and dedication to this process have been both inspiring and encouraging as they have committed to love God, their community, and themselves, becoming disciples of Christ in the world. But their confirmation journey is not yet complete. This July (14th-21st) we will be traveling together on pilgrimage to Costa Rica. Here we will have the opportunity to take what we have learned and committed to and put it to work in our larger world. During our Costa Rica Pilgrimage we will be participating in mission as we work together with a local congregation, experiencing the culture and people of Jacó (a small coastal Costa Rican city), and discovering God in the beauty of creation, relationships, and worship. As we travel we hope to share our experiences with you, remembering our commitment to this larger congregation and the Church. If you would like to journey with us I would encourage you to seek out one of our pilgrims (Lauren Graf, Michael Naish, Eli Dunlap, Holden Hall, Levi Lutz, Clay Fugate, Crystal Owens, Grace Headley, Will Mullins, or Woods Prewitt), because they are offering “stock” in our pilgrimage. This stock option will allow you the opportunity to support our youth as they journey, with a donation of $15-$30. In turn, the stock allows the youth to commit to a greater cause as they carry and lift up your prayer requests and provide daily reflections and photos during their journey. Finally, they will come together on August 23 to create a “Costa Rican Experience” for you as they culminate their experiences together, including their Costa Rican culinary expertise, cultural knowledge, and spiritual discoveries. We hope you will consider this great opportunity as we hold up our youth during this time of learning and growth.

THE REVEREND KATE BYRD: Associate for Youth and Young Adults By The Rev. Kate Byrd

Christ Church Cathedral is delighted to announce that The Reverend Kate Byrd will be leading the Cathedral Young Adults along with Youth Ministry. We give thanks for the many gifts Kate brings to the Cathedral and ask God’s blessing on her ministries. Kate writes: t is with joy and excitement that I will be taking on the Young Adult ministry in addition to my work with the Youth. This past year I have connected with the Young Adults of the Cathedral and formed friendships and bonds with them. As I have gotten

I

to know the individuals in this group, I know what enthusiasm and energy they hold for the Cathedral. As we join together in ministry I am excited to see where the Spirit will continue to lead us. Drew and I are hosting the Young Adults at our house in June and we are looking forward to a fun evening. I give thanks for Joe’s ministry, and along with all of the Cathedral Young Adults, we offer our prayers for God’s blessings in his new ministry. My focus on Youth Ministry continues especially as I look forward to going on pilgrimage with our youth confirmands. I’m very excited about the upcoming plans for the youth this next Fall, as well as the implementation of our Youth Council. This is a collaboration of 7 Cathedral Youth and

3 parents who will be involved in the decision making and execution of Cathedral Youth events and activities. One of the joys of working at Christ Church Cathedral is the opportunity to share in ministry with so many energized and engaged parishioners. I take on this new call and ministry at the Cathedral with confidence and enthusiasm. I pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to inspire us to move and act, both in our Church Home and in the world.

WELCOME

INVITE, WELCOME, CONNECT: Great Ideas on a Saturday Morning! By The Rev. Brent Owens

ur Invite, Welcome, Connect event last Saturday was a wonderful success! Mary’s great stories and funny videos illustrated each of the essentials of Invite, Welcome, Connect, and helped start the flow of some great ideas for the Cathedral. Some remarkable statistics that Mary cited are: 3 out of 4 people who are invited to church will accept! And, on the average, Episcopalians invite a new person to church once every 37 years! These statistics tell us that people are spiritually hungry and are just waiting to be invited to Christ Church Cathedral, and we may believe inviting someone to church is harder than it really is. Mary showed us that the foundations of Invite, Welcome Connect are solid: • Invite - As we know from scripture, Jesus told his friends and therefore us, do not be afraid, go and tell others of the good things God has done! (Mk 5:19, Matt. 11:4 , Matt. 28:10, Luke 7:22). • Welcome - Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. Romans 15:7 • Connect - We who are many are one body in Christ, and individually, we are connected one to another, each with gifts to share. Romans 12:5 What is our next step? Our next step is to create three Teams, one for each area, and choose the easy stuff to do. As a Cathedral member please prayerfully consider which area excites you the most and how you might be able to support that area. There are a variety of levels of commitment, and together we can discern how your gifts can be offered. Please send me an email and let

THE CHRIST COMMUNITY CUPBOARD DIAPER DRIVE By Kathleen Imhoff

have diapers to send to daycare. Your Christ Church Community Cupboard supplies about 110 families with only 2 weeks worth of diapers per child each month. You have an opportunity to help. Participate in the Community Cupboard Diaper Drive between Mother's Day, May 10 and Father's Day, June 21. You can bring diapers sizes 3-5 to church and drop them off in the designated diaper bins or write a check. The check should be made out to CROSS Ministries with Diaper Drive in the subject line. Thanks for your consideration of this important ministry.

CHILDREN

GOD'S TEAM, GODLY PLAY, AND GODLY MOMENTS By Sarah Combs

here’s been some impressive storytelling happening in God’s Team lately. While my co-leaders Ann Whitney Garner and Bernie Conrad can always cast a spell over our storytelling space, I must say: When I walked in to our classroom two weeks ago, there was a palpable magic in the air. Maybe that’s because special guest (and Kennedy’s mom) Jackie Justice was on hand to share not only a craft, but also a side-splitting anecdote about her own time in middle school, that faraway land that lies just across River Summer Vacation for many members of God’s Team. Jackie was a tough act to follow…but among the unexpected wonders the morning had to offer was that one of our fifth graders, James Young, had volunteered to tell the story. Ann Whitney was the wise soul who handed over the reins, and what came next was unforgettable: As James read from the Godly Play book, his classmates gathered ever nearer. His brother squeezed in beside him and helped to arrange the materials as the story unfolded. I can’t even recall the formal name of this story, but that’s not what matters. What matters is the listening that happened; the rapt attention James earned of his peers.

T

What matters is that the children, who were eager to chime in when pauses arose, knew this story by heart. They were sharing collectively a story that belonged to each of them individually. And the wondering that followed! Perhaps because one of their own was at the helm on this morning, the children seemed more free with their questions than ever. That trust, collab-

oration, and freedom carried over to the following week, when fifth grader Ralph Bright asked if he could tell the story. With the help of his friends, he did. Next up: the one and only Iona Campbell. I can’t wait for the wonders ahead.

THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER GREAT YEAR, HARRISON ELEMENTARY VOLUNTEERS!

C

hrist Church never ceases to amaze me. I love the work that you all are doing here at Harrison. The Fizz Boom indoor field trip for the 3rd graders was a huge success. They are still talking about the states of matter. The field trip tied in very well with our Next Generation Science standards. In those standards, the students are to make observations and conduct experiments. All the students made observations and some got to conduct experiments. The program that came to our school dealt mainly with the states of matter and how they can interact with one another. Sometimes when the matter interacted, a chemical reaction occurred in the form of a “fizz” or a “boom.” I do think the kids favorite experiment was the last one. They took warm water, dry ice and placed it into a container. A few students were chosen to place the lid on the container before it exploded. They loved the anticipation of the explosion. Thank you for being a helping hand in getting the kids excited about Science. You are truly a blessing to the students and staff at Harrison. The highlight of my day was watching all the smiling faces, wondering minds, and unforgettable moments watching them become actual scientists. hank you again for making possible the Living Arts & Science Center’s presentation of today’s Fizz, Boom, Science outreach program at Harrison Elementary. What a great group of students they were! Everyone was attentive, on their best behavior, and excited to volunteer and engage in all of the chemistry experiments. This is a program Harrison Elementary would not normally be able to afford, so thank you for providing this opportunity to the students and helping us show the students that science is fun and for everyone! Here at the Living Arts & Science Center we strive to provide opportunities like these to all of our neighborhood schools but our resources can only stretch so far. Your generosity helped us to bridge a very important gap. We look forward to continued partnerships with your church and its mission. Thank you so much! MUSIC

PENTECOST EVENSONG AND RECITAL By Erich Balling, Canon Musician

he Music Ministry at Christ Church Cathedral is a unique gift to our congregation, diocese, city and beyond! We have over 100 choristers of all ages actively involved; 10 in Cathedral Imps, 17 in Boys choir, 26 in Girls Choir, 12 in Schola, 20 in Men’s choir and 16 Cathedral Singers. We draw singers from Lexington, Georgetown, Paris, Versailles and Frankfort. Currently, there are 16 elementary, middle and secondary schools represented. We have three colleges and universities represented in our adult choirs. While most churches in Lexington have music programs and provide singing opportunities for children and adults, the choirs at the Cathedral offer even more! For example, our boy and girl choristers commit an average of six hours per week to their art, and to the deepening of their God given talents. Developing musicianship, leadership and interpersonal skills are a regular part of their week. Our choir for women Schola is rising to new musical heights through their ongoing commitment of service to the church through music. Another example is Cathedral Boys Choir. The Boys range in age from 9-14. The core group of boys, currently in 6th grade, started in the training choir (now called Cathedral Imps). This past year, in addition to learning new repertoire for Sunday worship, the boys performed to great acclaim all of Handel’s Messiah and Faure’s Requiem. They are in ministry to succeed, share and grow. They truly want to be the best boys choir! Our boys are one of 7 thriving liturgical boys choirs remaining in the nation. This means they are a stand-alone choir, capable of singing their own repertoire, as well as 4-8 part music with the Men’s voices.

T

The joy and conviction all of our choirs bring to any given Sunday, special service or concert is what our ministry strives for each day. Choral Evensong on Sunday May 24th at 4:00 pm will include chorister promotions and valedictions. This is a wonderful opportunity to mark progress in our young singers and say goodbye to our graduating singers. We invite you to attend and continue to be transformed by glorious music! Evensong will be preceded by a recital at a special time, 3:00pm featuring The Kentucky Baroque Ensemble with Soprano Elizabeth Arnold, Lutist Dieter Henning and Organist William Averill.

MINISTRY

CATHEDRAL ALTAR GUILD: Join the Fun & Family By Wanda Jaquith

When we think about hospitality and welcome in churches, we most often think of greeters, ushers and newcomer committees. But he fact is that the first work of hospitality comes in the ministry of the altar guild - long before anyone walks into the church for the celebration of the liturgy..." The Rt. Rev.

"

Lawrence C. Provenzano, Bishop of Long Island

When you walk into church for a Sunday morning service, do you ever wonder who arranged the flowers, polished the silver, or how the altar got set up for the Eucharist? The Altar Guild works behind the scenes to make all of that happen, and we need you! There are six teams who serve for only a few hours a week every six weeks, and like anything else, many hands make light work! Women and men are welcome and you'll get easy training! It's a wonderful way to learn more about the church and the liturgy we love. "I had never in my life been in a church that felt like a family...serving on Altar Guild began the process for me of

16 / PRAYER AND ACTION_MAY 15

belonging to this 'family'. Now, I have been serving for 15 years and have loved his important ministry and the friends I have made in my church home." Mary Ware Wigginton

The Altar Guild has the privilege of preparing the altar for any services held in the church - baptisms, weddings, ordinations, confirmations, funerals, special Holy Week services and regular Sunday morning services. We also have teams who volunteer to arrange the flowers, wash the linens, and polish the silver and brass. Altar Guild is truly a place you can serve and grow spiritually, as Lisa Johnson attests. "Being part of an Altar Guild team has helped deepen my faith, by teaching me what each part of the Eucharistic process means...why we set the Lord's table the way we do, why the clergy conducts the service the way they do." "Here is my truth: Altar Guild is fun!" Lisa Johnson To join Altar Guild, or just learn more, contact the Altar Guild Director, Barbara Silcox (859) 492-2471, or silcox.barbara@gmail.com.

THE NEXT STEP IN OUR FAITH JOURNEY By The Rev. Brent Owens

n April 26, 42 Cathedral members took the next step in their faith and were confirmed, received or reaffirmed their baptismal vows! It was a truly powerful moment when Bishop Hahn laid hands on each, said the prayers, even as all the Cathedral clergy, gathered friends, family and sponsors also laid hands on each person. Right after the Reverend Allen Garner, Sr. was received, while all hands were still upon him, his eyes got big, his face lit up, and he exclaimed “WOW!” Being confirmed, received or reaffirming baptismal vows is a big step in our faith journeys. Many who were confirmed, received and reaffirmed their vows on Sunday are also finding their call into ministries here at the Cathedral and in their daily lives. Some have become readers, some teachers, some chalice bearers and more. This is the natural progression as we move along our journey of faith. For those who have already been confirmed, received or reaffirmed their baptismal vows, what ministries have you felt called to? Where has the Holy Spirit moved in your life? If you have been feeling that you are called to a ministry, but aren’t sure what, please let the clergy know. We can listen with you, pray and help you discern that call to ministry. And also, new ministries are arising all of the time. Just this last Saturday, the ministries of Invite, Welcome, and Connect were explored with many remarkable ideas being generated. Are you called to serve one of these Teams: Invite, Welcome, or Connect? Please prayerfully consider it!

he garden was dedicated on All Saints Day, November 1, 2014, with many friends and family present to attend the lovely service. It was a day filled with poignant memories of Bob’s life and ministry. There was a very real sense of gratitude for all the people who had contributed time and donations for the future opportunities for

prayer and meditation that this sacred space affords. As we move forward into Phase II of the garden planning/work, there continues to be a need for donations of trees, plants and funds for the purpose of maintaining the garden over time. There is also a need for volunteers, both individuals and groups, throughout the spring, summer and fall to work in the garden. There is nothing as inspiring as a day at the Domain! ART

SCAPA STUDENT ART EXHIBIT By Lynne Slone

rt at the Cathedral is excited to exhibit the art produced by the students from SCAPA from May through early July. SCAPA is a Gifted and Talented Arts program for the Fayette County Schools. SCAPA stands for the School for the Creative and Performing Arts. The program was established over 25 years ago beginning with 4th and 5th grade – housed in Harrison Elementary. Now classes run from 4th grade through high school – all housed on the campus of Lafayette High School. The program provides arts area classes in 9 majors and minors: Ballet, Literary Arts, Art, Contemporary Dance, Voice, Band, Strings and Drama. Many of our Christ Church members and Choristers have been students in this wonderful program (over 15 choristers currently). At the exhibit and Gallery Hop – you will find art work

A

from Art majors and minors from 4th grade through the high school program. This work was mostly produced in the past 4-6 months during classes or as a part of their coursework after school. One of the themes you will see in their work is a focus on our wonderful state of Kentucky. Much of the work can be leased after the show for a small donation to the school as a part of a program call Art Lease. Look for the table set up in the hallway during Gallery Hop or contact the SCAPA Arts program at 381-3332 or at http://www. friends-scapa.org/ Save the date for Gallery Hop Friday May 15 from 5-8 p.m. Bring the whole family to the Gallery Hop and watch the 4th graders at SCAPA present a Kentucky History Festival Program. The program highlights class activities that were studied through- out the year. Dances, Songs, storytelling, and music will fill much of the night. Many thanks to the 4th grade SCAPA teacher and fellow parishioner Jim Beers who will direct this Gallery Hop program.
