A Harvest of Thanks

THE VERY REVEREND CAROL WADE Dean & Rector

The apostle Paul calls us to, “Give thanks in all seasons.”

FROM THE DEAN

N

ovember is a time of giving thanks for the harvest of God’s abundant creation and the blessings of life. There are many reasons to give thanks for our life together at Christ Church Cathedral. Our gifts are immense. The many missions and ministries undertaken by our members are all acts of thanksgiving, acts that express our gratitude to God. Reflecting on some of our most recent events shows just how much we have to be thankful for and how many ways we rejoice together. Consecration Sunday was a banner day of thanksgiving and celebration. Outside the air was clear, the sky was blue and warming sunrays revealed leaves burnished with crimson and yellow. Inside our Consecration Sunday worship and celebrations sparkled with joy and love. Mal Underwood, our guest preacher, encouraged us to consider these biblical truths. When we are generous God’s blessings abound, God is glorified and good things are accomplished. We were asked to prayerfully consider what percentage of our income God is calling us to pledge for God’s work through Christ Church Cathedral for the upcoming year, and to consecrate those tithes and offerings to God. By committing a portion of our financial resources to the work of sharing God’s love, indeed God’s blessings abound, God is glorified and good things are accomplished as we return thanks to the One from whom all blessings flow. The celebration of All Saints offers another opportunity to give thanks. The custom of celebrating all of the saints goes back at least to the third century. It is a time of thanksgiving for the grace and power of the risen Christ in ordinary people of faith. We also remember all who have died in the faith, and who have completed their baptismal journey and now find fullness and rest in God. Therefore, All Saints celebrates all the baptized people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. If November is a time of giving thanks, it also marks the end of the church year, the end of a year of reading from the Gospel of Matthew. As our church year draws to a close, we also notice the seasonal changes outside. Trees, once lush and green, shed their leaves to reveal their architectural beauty. Bare branches reach toward the sky as if with

hands upraised in thanks to God. All of our endings mark new beginnings. As surely as the winds of autumn come, the stillness of winter and the freshness of spring will also follow. To prepare for new beginnings we return to what is essential. Just as the trees rid themselves of their leaves and reveal their unembellished form, we slough off what is not necessary. We are called return to what is essential, to live a life of thanksgiving to God and neighbor. In this season of thanksgiving, finding reasons to give thanks may be easy for you or it may be a bit more challenging. Yet the apostle Paul calls us to, “Give thanks in all seasons.” Christians are certainly not immune to the changes of life. The apostle Paul grappled with life and death challenges throughout the many seasons of his ministry. Yet, the apostle knew the supreme gift of God’s immeasurable love and of our need to express thanks, particularly in times of challenge, as well as in times of joy. In all seasons, Paul writes, that we are to “Hold fast to what is good.” And indeed, God is good. God has blessed our cathedral family to love God care for each other and serve the world. As we celebrate our lives together, this truly is an extraordinary season of thanksgiving. ൪

MUSIC

F

all is my favorite season of the year. Of all the seasons, it provides a new opportunity for shaping and building the Cathedral’s music ministry. A significant part of the Cathedral chorister program is welcoming new boys, girls and families to the Cathedral choirs. This fall, we’ve said hello to seven new families with children who show an aptitude and love for singing. Welcome to William Greenlee, Parker Olukalns, Noah Roberts, Brooklyn Clemons, Molly Lefferts, Makaila Taylor and Kate Verble. Imagine for a moment what the Cathedral looks like to a young chorister when they first process on a Sunday morning or hear the great organ for the first time or sing an anthem of significant grace and beauty in many voice parts. For many, it is a profound experience that even at a young age begins shaping their perception of God and the Church. Perhaps at those moments, I am most grateful for being here and for having the opportunity to share God’s gift of music in this sacred place. Following each rehearsal and service, the Cathedral choristers gather to say a simple prayer together. It is called the Choristers Prayer and its origins extend back at least to the fourth century. I offer the prayer to you in thanksgiving for the beauty of music and the joy of learning and singing that children and adults bring to the Cathedral each week.

ART

CREATING SACRED RHYTHMS By Lynne Slone

reflected on this upcoming exhibit, “Visual arts have been a qualitative addition to my retired life and have offered me the opportunity to be of service to the church and to make many acquaintances in the art community, both locally and nationally. I will forever be grateful for this privilege. I have corresponded with both local and national artists regarding this theme ‘Sacred Rhythms.’ It is so fascinating to see the variation that creative artists bring to an idea. Some pick up on dance, some music, some on the Christian Calendar, and others—I have no idea! But this I know, there will be something for everyone.”

J

esse Mark is curating the Art at the Cathedral (AATC) November exhibit entitled "Sacred Rhythms." This is an invitational exhibit and over thirty artists who are members of Episcopal Church in Visual Arts from across America will be included in this show. The theme of the exhibit is consistent with “Creating Sacred Rhythms”, the theme for Christ Church Cathedral this year, and has been expressed by Dean Wade as “listening to an ancient echo deep within that opens into resonant pathways to our true selves and to God.” The pieces in this exhibit will reflect the artist’s personal interpretation of Sacred Rhythms. Curator Jesse Mark is an accomplished oil painter, art teacher and was the Chair of AATC for many years. Jesse

[Creating sacred rhythms is] listening to an ancient echo deep within that opens into resonant pathways to our true selves and to God.

Save the date for the Friday, November 21, Gallery Hop at Christ Church from 5:00-8:00pm. This is an opportunity to meet several of the artists who submitted pieces to this invitational exhibit. There will be music provided by our own Bill Adams on piano, plus music and dance performed by Arts at Ashland School under the direction of Kathleen Balling. As always, the Gallery Hop reception will include delicious appetizers and punch. ൪

MISSION

ANGEL TREE: A SIMPLE CHRISTMAS WISH By Paige Kikuchi

T

he most wonderful time of the year is fast approaching. The first Sunday of Advent is November 30 and Christ Church members know that means The Angel Tree returns along with the Advent wreath. Just as in years past, the tree will be filled with angels, bearing the wishes of children from Harrison Elementary, clients of Moveable Feast and families of One Parent Scholar House. Paige and Thomas Kikuchi are organizing Angel Tree this year and are looking to their fellow CCC members for assistance. The tree will be on display after each of the 3 services November 30 and December 7. Please

stop by and choose an angel and grant a wish for one of our neighbors. The same procedure will apply again this year: Donors are asked to select an angel, complete the donor information form, shop for the wish list items, and bring them to Christ Church by Sunday, December 14. We are pleased to announce that we will again help Harrison Elementary with the “Holiday Shopping Event.” Folks that choose a Harrison Angel will bring those gifts unwrapped, along with wrapping supplies, and they will be delivered to Harrison for families to pick up at the event. This will take place December 20 and is beginning a fun tradition for all involved. There are several volunteer opportunities available. Help is needed assisting folks when they select angels, delivering gifts to Harrison and working with Harrison staff during the Holiday

Shopping Event. Please contact Paige Kikuchi at 859-221-2843 or pwkikuchi@gmail.com. It doesn’t quite seem like a sacrifice to provide some simple Christmas wishes to neighbors, but it will be so appreciated and go a long way to make it the most wonderful time of the year for the givers and the receivers. ൪

GOING OUT: YOUNG ADULTS MAKE ‘DATE NIGHT’ A REGULAR GATHERING By The Rev. Joe Mitchell

A

re you a young couple that’s feeling swamped? Need a bit of a break? This year the Cathedral Young Adults have introduced a new fellowship time into our regular routine, which might be right up your alley. It’s Date

Night! Just as Theology on Tap is a chance for young adults to gather and relax after work over a drink and conversation, Date Night seeks to offer the same organic, come-as-you-are atmosphere for those folks who may not be able to make it out to Theology on Tap gathering on Monday nights. And so far, it’s been a great success!

not been many chances to get to know folks their own age. Now they’ve been getting settled and even had baby Gabriel baptized a few weeks ago! “I especially like that we can come and relax for a few hours, no strings attached,” said Kim Chapman. She and her husband Alex have two boys and have been very active at CCC since joining almost two years ago. “We love this community, and having a chance to have conversations with people in similar situations is really important!” “There hasn’t ever been anything like this before,” added Alex Clay. “It’s really helpful to have a gathering where we can drop our daughter off for a bit and relax and grow in community. This is great!” The Cathedral Young Adults are a busy bunch, with a great many opportunities for fellowship and communitybuilding. Maybe Date Night is the gathering for you! We get together for dinner (appetizers provided) on the first Friday of every month at 7:00 pm. Childcare is available at CCC starting at 6:30. Our next Date Night will be Friday, November 7 at Cheapside! Hope to see you there! ൪

Our most recent gathering at Alfalfa’s saw four young couples gather together—some with kids, some not—and for a few of them it was the first time they had even met! “Our schedules are so crazy with kids and work, and what not, that it was great to get to meet some new people!” said Ian Norris. He and his wife Megan have been at Christ Church Cathedral for a few months now, but because of their two kids and various other commitments, there had

GIVING THANKS WITH THE EPISCOPAL CAMPUS MINISTRY By The Rev. Joe Mitchell

hat is the measure of a community’s success? Rather than the quantity of folks walking through the doors, the Episcopal Campus Ministry measures its success by the quality of its gatherings. And for that, we are so very thankful! This year has seen the ECM play God Golf, make rosaries, have deep conversations around world religions, celebrate Mass on the Grass, and much more. And wouldn’t you know it—we have more regulars attending our gathering than ever before! The year began with Mass on the Grass, which is exactly what it sounds like. Twice this year we have celebrated the sacred liturgy on the grass in front of Rose Street and have followed it up with outdoor movie showings. When we showed dŚĞ /ƌŽŶ 'ŝĂŶƚ we actually had folks walk right up from the street to see what was going on! “It’s one of my favorite movies!” exclaimed Amanda Stark. “And it was so much fun seeing new people! I think when the quality of the event is emphasized, then you’ll see the quantity of folks go up. And this year, it’s been great having new folks join us! One of those new folks is Maggie Sherman, a junior from Louisville who has been exploring the Episcopal Church back home and has become a regular at ECM gatherings. And what’s been her favorite part of the year? “I loved when we made the rosaries,” she said. “I’d never made any before, but once I started I couldn’t stop!” Maggie made four rosaries, saying she would share them with roommates, family, and friends. It’s especially wonderful to see students taking the initiative and planning events themselves. Junior Austin Norrid, who attends Saint Michael’s here in Lexington, also

helped organize an evening when the ECM went to dinner at Saul Good to benefit Dining Out 4 Life. “Dining Out 4 Life helps raise money for HIV and AIDS research. I thought it would be a great way for us to raise awareness and support a great cause while still going out and having fun together!” So far it has been a wonderful year for the Episcopal Campus Ministry, and it’s not over yet! New faces join our fellowship gatherings and services of Nighttime Prayer each week. We clearly have much for which to be thankful! If you would like more information about ECM, including how you can help with a meal, contact The Rev. Joe Mitchell at jmitchell@ccclex.org. ൪

CATHEDRAL 101 IS 4 U By The Rev. Brent Owens

magine that you know little about the Episcopal tradition. Or as a Christ Church Cathedral member you would like to know more about the sacraments, liturgy, or how the Episcopal Church came into being. Or even though you have worshiped in an Episcopal Church for many years, you have questions about why we do what we do. Or that you are completely new to Christ Church Cathedral. These are descriptions of a few of the many who attend Cathedral 101. This is a class designed for everyone who has questions about our faith, our church and God’s call in each of our lives. We connect with each other as we explore our faith. We learn about the spiritual gifts that God has given to each of us when we do our spiritual

gifts assessment. Then we prayerfully discern how God may be calling us to use our spiritual gifts. Through Cathedral 101, we are connected to each other and to Christ Church Cathedral and its many ministries. We come to each class with questions and thoughts that can safely be discussed. We have fun with a “Night for Newcomers” with appetizers and drinks at the Owens’ house. Everyone is invited to Cathedral 101 to be welcomed and connected to this Episcopal Church and this community of faith. We gather at 10:00am each Sunday in the Dean’s Conference Room, third floor. ൪

COMMUNICATION SURVEY RESULTS By Ashley Goodrich

I

n August, you had the opportunity to complete the Cathedral Communications Survey. Thank you for taking the time! The results proved interesting and useful in how the Cathedral communicates with its parishioners, and with those outside the church. Demographically, of the 105 people who completed the survey, 15 are ages 25-44. We also learned another 15 individuals have been at the Cathedral fewer than five years. We welcome these newcomers! The results of the survey showed parishioners prefer to receive the WƌĂLJĞƌ Θ ĐƚŝŽŶ in one of two ways - half like printed, and half like reading it online. In response to this, we will continue to produce the WΘ as we currently do, printed with an online version. The online version may shift to a different vehicle, such as a blog, but we will continue to look for ideas to make this publication easier to access. Also, the WΘ was listed as being a very important channel for communication in general. The majority of people at the Cathedral have email addresses, which makes the Constant Contact emails very efficient in communicating quickly with many people. In fact, two-thirds of those surveyed consult the Cathedral Reminders to find details about events or church notices. Finally,

the ^ƵŶĚĂLJ dŝŵĞƐ and the website are the top sources individuals look to when wanting details on events or notices. We have a low impact in the social media world, one that we need to grow to keep with current trends. As a Cathedral, we need to spread the word on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and beyond. If you have an a-ha! moment during worship services or at Cathedral events, check in or #hashtag posts to share with your online friends. We encourage your interaction on social media. Tell the world your story, and how much you love your church! ൪
