Are you envious because I Ăŵ ŐĞŶĞƌŽƵƐ͍͟ ;Dƚ͘ ϮϬ͗ϭϱͿ / ǁĂƐ ƐƚƌƵĐŬ ďǇ ƚŚĞƐĞ ǁŽƌĚƐ ůĂƐƚ ǁĞĞŬ ǁŚĞŶ ǁĞ ŚĞĂƌĚ ƚŚĞ ƐƚŽƌǇ ŽĨĨĞƌĞĚ ďǇ :ĞƐƵƐ ŬŶŽǁŶ as “The Laborers in the Vineyard.” It is a challenging story about a landowner ƉĂǇŝŶŐ Ăůů ƚŚĞ ǁŽƌŬĞƌƐ ŝŶ ƚŚĞ ĨŝĞůĚ ƚŚĞ same wage; no matter what time they ďĞŐĂŶ ƚŚĞŝƌ ǁŽƌŬ͘ dŚĞ ŽƌŝŐŝŶĂů ǁŽƌŬĞƌƐ become outraged. /ƚ ďŽƚŚĞƌƐ ƵƐ ƚŽŽ͘ tĞ ĚŽŶ͛ƚ ůŝŬĞ it when someone gets more than we ŐĞƚ͕ ĞƐƉĞĐŝĂůůǇ ĨŽƌ ůĞƐƐ ǁŽƌŬ͘ /ŶƚĞƌĞƐƚingly, the landowner points out to the ŽƌŝŐŝŶĂů ǁŽƌŬĞƌƐ ǁŚŽ ůĂďŽƌĞĚ ůŽŶŐĞƌ͕ that they were exceedingly happy ƚŽ ŚĂǀĞ ǁŽƌŬ ĂŶĚ Ă ǁĂŐĞ ƵŶƚŝů ƚŚĞǇ thought that others got a better deal. dŚŝƐ ŽĨ ĐŽƵƌƐĞ͕ ŝƐ ŬŶŽǁŶ ĂƐ ĞŶǀǇͶŽŶĞ of the seven deadly sins. Envy urges us to deny or put down someone else’s success or good fortune. We often get righteously puffed up and say that such actions insult our sense of fairness. zŽƵ ƐĞĞ͕ ĞŶǀǇ ŐŽĞƐ ůĂƌŐĞůǇ ƵŶĂĐŬŶŽǁůedged by the envier. In telling this story, perhaps Jesus is trying to get us a little stirred up, so that we might recognize how de-cenƚĞƌŝŶŐ ƵŶĂĐŬŶŽǁůĞĚŐĞĚ ĞŶǀǇ ĂŶĚ ŐƌĞĞĚ can be in our lives. In fact, it can be so decentering that we are no longer capable of recognizing the extraordinary generosity of God. dŚĞ ŐƌĞĂƚ <ĞŶƚƵĐŬǇ ƉƌŽƉŚĞƚ ĂŶĚ poet Wendell Berry captures this truth in his poem, “What We Need is Here.”

FROM THE DEAN "Geese appear high over us, ƉĂƐƐ͕ ĂŶĚ ƚŚĞ ƐŬǇ ĐůŽƐĞƐ͘ ďĂŶĚŽŶ͕ as in love or sleep, holds them to their way, clear in the ancient faith: what we need is here. And we pray, not for new earth or heaven, but to be quiet in heart, and in eye, clear. What we need is here." In his poem, Wendell Berry uses the beautiful image of wild geese soaring overhead, abandoning themselves to ͞ƚŚĞ ĂŶĐŝĞŶƚ ĨĂŝƚŚ͟ͶƚŚĂƚ 'ŽĚ͛Ɛ ŐƌĂĐĞ ĂŶĚ 'ŽĚ͛Ɛ ŐĞŶĞƌŽƐŝƚǇ hold them in their way. Berry reminds us of this Scriptural truth: All that we have and all that we are, even breath itself, comes to us freely from God’s extraordinary generosity. What we need is indeed here. Author and journalist Gail Sheehy reflected on this wisdom in a recent radio interview. Sheehy has done in-depth ĐŚĂƌĂĐƚĞƌ ƉŽƌƚƌĂŝƚƐ ŽĨ ,ŝůĂƌǇ ůŝŶƚŽŶ͕ DŝŬŚĂŝů 'ŽƌďĂĐŚĞǀ͕ ĂŶĚ DĂƌŐĂƌĞƚ dŚĂƚĐŚĞƌ͕ ĂŶĚ ŝƐ ĂůƐŽ ŬŶŽǁŶ ĨŽƌ ŚĞƌ ŝŶĨůƵĞŶƚŝĂů ĂŶĚ ďĞƐƚ ƐĞůůŝŶŐ ďŽŽŬ ĨƌŽŵ ϭϵϳϲ͕ ĞŶƚŝƚůĞĚ WĂƐƐĂŐĞƐ͕ ŝŶ ǁŚŝĐŚ she examined the typical challenges and crises that people experience as they pass through the various stages of life. ^ŚĞĞŚǇ ǁŽƌŬĞĚ ŚĂƌĚ ƚŽ ƌŝƐĞ ĂƐ Ă ũŽƵƌŶĂůŝƐƚ ŝŶ Ă ƚŝŵĞ when the newsroom was not open to women. Now in her ƐĞǀĞŶƚŝĞƐ͕ ĂŶĚ ůŽŽŬŝŶŐ ďĂĐŬ Ăƚ ŚĞƌ ŝůůƵƐƚƌŝŽƵƐ ĐĂƌĞĞƌ͕ ƉĞŽƉůĞ ŽĨƚĞŶ ƐĂǇ ƚŚĂƚ ƐŚĞ ŝƐ Ă ǁŽŵĂŶ ǁŚŽ ŚĂĚ ŝƚ ĂůůͶĂ ĐĂƌĞĞƌ͕ Ă husband and two children. She laughs when she hears such words, and explains, “I did not pull all that together until well into my late forties. “ And then she says, “In fact, I don’t buy that phony notion that you can have it all. What I have come to understand is that I have enough. She continues, “I have enough to give it away, to use my talent to write and ƐƉĞĂŬ ƚŽ ŚŽƉĞĨƵůůǇ ŝŶƐƉŝƌĞ ŽƚŚĞƌƐ ƚŽ ĚĂƌĞ͘ &ĞĂƌ ŝƐ ƉĂƌĂůǇǌŝŶŐ͕ ĂŶĚ ƐŽ / ĚĂƌĞ͕ ďĞĐĂƵƐĞ ƚŽ ĚĂƌĞ ŝƐ ƚŽ ƚĂŬĞ ĂĐƚŝŽŶ͘͟ She said that she learned the most about “having enough” during her sixties when she slowly lost her husband to cancer. She at first fell in to depression and became addicted to alcohol. Having lost her husband, she no longer “had it all” and she was hurt, angry and envious. She was

led to a 12-step program that turned around her addiction and changed her life. She recounts, “I realized that having a ƐƉŝƌŝƚƵĂů ĨŽƵŶĚĂƚŝŽŶ ŝƐ ŬĞǇ ƚŽ ƌĞĂůŝǌŝŶŐ ƚŚĂƚ ǇŽƵ ŝŶĚĞĞĚ ŚĂǀĞ enough.” As Christians, we understand Sheehy’s transformation. ĐŬŶŽǁůĞĚŐŝŶŐ ŽƵƌ ĚĞƉĞŶĚĞŶĐĞ ŽŶ 'ŽĚ ĂůŽŶĞ ŝƐ ĐĂůůĞĚ humility. Humility counters envy and is the beginning of gratitude. Humility and gratitude teach us “what we need is here.” God’s generosity is the message of Jesus’ story of the ǁŽƌŬĞƌƐ ŝŶ ƚŚĞ ĨŝĞůĚ͘ Ǉ ƚĞůůŝŶŐ ƚŚŝƐ ƐƚŽƌǇ͕ ŚĞ ƚĞĂĐŚĞƐ ƵƐ ŚŽǁ ƚŽ ůŝǀĞ Ă ůŝĨĞ ŽĨ ƚŚĂŶŬƐ ĂŶĚ ŚŽǁ ƚŽ ŐƌŽǁ ŝŶ ŽƵƌ ĂƚƚŝƚƵĚĞ ŽĨ gratitude. Fear, envy and greed decenter us; our sacred

rhythms of prayer and generosity miraculously re-center us. Wendell Berry writes: “We pray, not for a new heaven or earth, but to be quiet in heart, and in eye clear. What we need is here.” My prayer for us whenever we get caught in fear and envy is that we may dare to cultivate a quiet heart and clarity of vision. In this season of generosity, may we ĚĂƌĞ ƚŽ ĞŶƚĞƌ 'ŽĚ͛Ɛ ŬŝŶŐĚŽŵ ƚŚƌŽƵŐŚ ƚŚĞ ƐŝŵƉůĞ ĂĐƚ ŽĨ ƚƌƵƐƚing that all that we need is here. ൪

LIVING BY WORDS WITH SARAH COMBS By Dr. Elizabeth Conrad

he Cathedral’s evening with author and parishioner Sarah Combs was a gift-filled night. Recently published, ƌĞĂŬĨĂƐƚ ^ĞƌǀĞĚ ŶǇƚŝŵĞ was the ƚŽƉŝĐ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ĞǀĞŶŝŶŐ͘ dŚŝƐ ďŽŽŬ͕ ǁƌŝƚƚĞŶ ǁŝƚŚ ƚŚĞ ƚĞĞŶĂŐĞƌ ĂƐ ƚŚĞ ƚĂƌŐĞƚ ĂƵĚŝĞŶĐĞ͕ ŝƚ ƐƉŽŬĞ ƚŽ all non-teenagers in the room. It is a story about “coming of age,” which Sarah describes as that time when “you become ƚŚĞ ƉĞƌƐŽŶ ǇŽƵ ǁŝůů ĂůǁĂǇƐ ďĞ͘͟ dŚƌŽƵŐŚ ƚŚĞ ďŽŽŬ͕ ǁĞ ĨŝŶĚ ƚĞĞŶĂŐĞƌƐ Ăƚ ͞ŐĞĞŬ ĐĂŵƉ͟ ǁŚŽ ďĞŐŝŶ ƚŽ ŽƉĞŶ ƚŚĞŵƐĞůǀĞƐ up for change as they grapple with the differences they find in one another. Held assumptions are shattered and bonds are formed. These are the threads that seem to shape all of Sarah’s stories as she listens for the muse to whisper what needs to be told. Stories, she ƐĂǇƐ͕ ͞ŚĞůƉ ƉĞŽƉůĞ ŵĂŬĞ ƐĞŶƐĞ of their world.” This is her call. Parishioner thoughts on the evening: ͻ ͞^ĂƌĂŚ͛Ɛ ďŽŽŬ ǁŽƵůĚ ŚĞůƉ

Crystal Wilkinson, founding member of the Affrilachian Poets

On Wednesday, October 1, we welcome Crystal Wilkinson to our Wednesday night series, Living by Words. Crystal is an African-American writer from Kentucky and founding member of the Affrilachian Poets, a writing collective based in Lexington. Crystal will be reading from “Water Street.” We will also have “Blackberries, Blackberries” available. Currently she is the Writer-in-Residence teaching writing and literature at Morehead State University and heads the BFA in Creative Writing Program there. She offers private consultations for aspiring writers.

n early September our Cathedral Youth traveled to Barnes Mountain for their Appalachian Adventure Mission Trip to St. Timothy’s Outreach Center. Here Ăƚ ^ƚ͘ dŝŵŽƚŚǇ͛Ɛ ǁĞ ǁŽƌŬĞĚ ŝŶ ƚŚĞ ůŽĐĂů ĐŽŵŵƵŶŝƚǇ͕ ůĞĂƌŶĞĚ ĂďŽƵƚ ƚŚĞ ůŽĐĂů ĐƵůƚƵƌĞ͕ ĂŶĚ ĐĂŵĞ ƚŽ ŬŶŽǁ Ă different way of life from our own. The youth participated ŝŶ ǁŽƌŬ ƉƌŽũĞĐƚƐ ƚŽ ƌĞƉĂŝƌ ĂŶĚ ƌĞŚĂď ƚŚĞ ŚŽŵĞƐ ŽĨ ƚŚŽƐĞ ůŝǀŝŶŐ ŝŶ ƚŚŝƐ ĐŽŵŵƵŶŝƚǇ͕ ǁŽƌŬŝŶŐ ŚĂƌĚ ƚŽ Ĩŝǆ ƌŽŽĨƐ͕ ŝŶƐƚĂůů windows, and paint rooms. They learned a lot, not only ĂďŽƵƚ ŵĂŶƵĂů ůĂďŽƌ ĂŶĚ ƚŚĞ ƐŬŝůůƐ ĂŶĚ ƉĂƚŝĞŶĐĞ ŝŶǀŽůǀĞĚ͕ but also about the local Appalachian culture and the families they were assisting.

It was such a wonderful opportunity for Ăůů ŽĨ ƵƐ ƚŽ ƚĂŬĞ ƐŽŵĞ time out from our busy

schedules and over-connected lives to unplug and unwind in the beauty and simplicity of the Appalachian Mountains. From campfires to "capture the flag" in the rain, the youth not only had fun, but they also learned and saw a lot. It was both impressive and inspiring to hear and see the impact our short trip to St. Timothy’s made on our youth. Although we were only an hour away from our beloved Lexington, ŝƚ ƐĞĞŵĞĚ Ăƚ ƚŝŵĞƐ ůŝŬĞ Ă ĚŝĨĨĞƌĞŶƚ ĐŽƵŶƚƌǇ͘ Ɛ ƚŚĞ ǇŽƵƚŚ realized the struggles and pains of those in their own state, they also realized the strength and hope that resided in that same place. Furthermore, they saw how their own presĞŶĐĞ͕ ƚŝŵĞ͕ ĂŶĚ ǁŽƌŬ ƉŽƐŝƚŝǀĞůǇ ŝŵƉĂĐƚĞĚ ƚŚŽƐĞ ŝŶ ŶĞĞĚ͘ Ɛ ŽƵƌ ǇŽƵƚŚ ƌĞĨůĞĐƚĞĚ ŽŶ ƚŚĞŝƌ ƚŝŵĞ ĂŶĚ ǁŽƌŬ Ăƚ ^ƚ͘ Timothy’s, they recognized both the blessings of their own lives, and the pain and suffering that exist in the world. They also came to find and realize their own abilities as disciples ŽĨ ŚƌŝƐƚ ƚŽ ďƌŝŶŐ ůŝŐŚƚ ďĂĐŬ ŝŶƚŽ ƚŚĞ ĚĂƌŬŶĞƐƐ ƚŚƌŽƵŐŚ ƚŚĞŝƌ presence, time, and care. A NEW SEASON FOR AN OLD CHAPEL By The Rev. Joe Mitchell

he Chapel of Saint Augustine of Canterbury has ƐƚŽŽĚ Ăƚ ϰϳϮ ZŽƐĞ ^ƚƌĞĞƚ since 1959. It has been a fixture on the campus ŽĨ ƚŚĞ hŶŝǀĞƌƐŝƚǇ ŽĨ <ĞŶƚƵĐŬǇ͕ ŽĨƚĞŶ referred to as the "Sorority with the Stained Glass" by students. With nearůǇ ϲϬ ǇĞĂƌƐ ŽĨ ŵŝŶŝƐƚƌǇ ďĞŚŝŶĚ ŝƚ͕ ĂŶĚ Ă new future ahead, how can we express our gratitude for all that Saint Augustine’s has meant to so many people? One way of showing that gratitude is the creation of the Saint Augustine’s Board, which met for the first time in September. Because Saint Augustine’s ŝƐ ŶŽƚ Ă ƉĂƌŝƐŚͶŝƚ ŝƐ Ă ŵŝƐƐŝŽŶ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ŝŽĐĞƐĞ ŽĨ >ĞǆŝŶŐƚŽŶͶŝƚ ŚĂƐ ŶĞǀĞƌ had a vestry to assist in the decisionŵĂŬŝŶŐ͘ /Ŷ ŽƌĚĞƌ ƚŽ ĐĂƌĞ ĨŽƌ ƚŚĞ ĨƵƚƵƌĞ that is ahead, this new board has been

created to help see that Saint Augustine’s past is honored and that its future is bright. “As a grad student and (now as) a professor I have ǁĂůŬĞĚ ďǇ ƚŚŝƐ ďƵŝůĚŝŶŐ Ă ŶƵŵber of times,” said Greg Graf, a member of Christ Church Cathedral. “Since becoming ĂŶ ƉŝƐĐŽƉĂůŝĂŶ / ŽĨƚĞŶ ůŽŽŬ ĨŽƌ ways in which I can use what ŐŝĨƚƐ / ŚĂǀĞ ƚŽ ƐƚƌĞŶŐƚŚĞŶ 'ŽĚ͛Ɛ ŬŝŶŐdom. Serving on this board is one way for me to do that.” The board consists of members of Christ Church Cathedral, The Church of the Good Shepherd, and two students who are living in the chapel’s upstairs apartment. Together with the campus missioner (me!) and Bishop Hahn, the ďŽĂƌĚ ǁŝůů ƐĞĞŬ ƚŽ ĐƌĂĨƚ Ă ŵŝƐƐŝŽŶ ƐƚĂƚĞment and vision for the chapel as it heads into the future. “What ways can we best serve the students here at h<͍͟ ĂƐŬĞĚ >ĂƵƌĞŶ 'ŽŽĚƉĂƐter, a parishioner at Good Shepherd and member of the board. “Our hope is to help students grow in their faith, connect them to local church communities, and be a place where all are welcome.” This year Saint Augustine’s will host three regular faith ŐƌŽƵƉƐ ĚƵƌŝŶŐ ƚŚĞ ǁĞĞŬ͕ ĂƐ

As young adults in an ever-changing, fast-paced, and self-centered world, it can be hard to hold to the meaning of gratitude in our lives. Still, many members of the Cathedral Young Adults are finding ways to grow in their gratitude, precisely because they are grounded in their faith. It is the community of faith at Christ Church Cathedral that has shown our members ƚŚĂƚ ƚŚĞƌĞ ŝƐ Ă ŵǇƌŝĂĚ ŽĨ ǁĂǇƐ ƚŽ ŐŝǀĞ ƚŚĂŶŬƐ ƚŽ 'ŽĚ ĂŶĚ express our gratitude. One member of the Young Adults, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “I always heard ‘All things come of thee, O Lord, and of thine own have we given thee.’ I figure that everything I’ve earned comes from God anyway. /ŶĐƌĞĂƐŝŶŐ ŵǇ ƉůĞĚŐĞ ƚŚŝƐ ƉĂƐƚ ǇĞĂƌ ǁĂƐ Ă ǁĂǇ ŽĨ ƚŚĂŶŬŝŶŐ God and partnering with everyone else in this church to do ƚŚĞ ŐŽŽĚ ǁŽƌŬ ǁĞ͛ƌĞ Ăůů ĐĂůůĞĚ ƚŽ ĚŽ͘Η It doesn’t matter how we express our gratitude. Kennedy told ƵƐ ĂďŽƵƚ Ă ďŽŽŬ that she read about stars. She said ƚŚĞ ďŽŽŬ ĞǆƉůĂŝŶƐ that the stars are holes with people in heaven on the other side and that one day we’ll be on the other side too. She expressed her wondering about what everything ůŽŽŬĞĚ ůŝŬĞ ďĞĨŽƌĞ God made the first day. “Sometimes,” she said, “I’ve ŚĞĂƌĚ ŝƚ ǁĂƐ ůŝŬĞ Ă ďŝŐ ŽĐĞĂŶ ĂŶĚ ĚĂƌŬ͘͟ tŚŝůĞ <ĞŶŶĞĚǇ ŝƐ Ă ƚŚŝŶŬĞƌ͕ ƐŚĞ ĂůƐŽ ĞŶũŽǇƐ ƐƉŽƌƚƐ ĂŶĚ plays on a soccer team, and prefers to play outside. One of her favorite pasttimes is playing with her “Littlest Pet Shop,” which Elizabeth tells her was her daughter’s favorite collection too! Kennedy says that she’s been collecting them a long time and has more than three hundred. ne of 9-year-old Kennedy Justice’s most touching recent experiences was her May baptism at Christ Church. She describes it as “the best day of my life.” When Elizabeth Conrad and I interviewed her, Elizabeth ĂƐŬĞĚ ŚĞƌ ǁŚǇ ŝƚ ǁĂƐ ƐŽ ƐƉĞĐŝĂů͘ <ĞŶŶĞĚǇ ƌĞƉůŝĞĚ͕ ͞ ĞĐĂƵƐĞ I’m part of God’s family now so I am blessed.” She went on to say that the baptism was “really fun. I got a candle and I couldn’t stop smelling it. My cousin and best friend were there and we had a party afterwards. It was neat!” Kennedy attends school at Sts. Peter and Paul, where her favorite subjects are social studies, religion and spelling. She is a thoughtful fourth-grader, full of enthusiasm about her church. She says she “loves all the rooms at the Cathedral,” especially her fourth/fifth grade class. She is ůŽŽŬŝŶŐ ĨŽƌǁĂƌĚ ƚŽ Ă ŐĂƚŚĞƌŝŶŐ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ŶĞǁ ϰͬϱ ůƵď͕ ĐŽŵposed of CCC fourth- and fifth-graders. This is the challenge we have been given. Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills. Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their church’s mission and ministry with a percentage of their incomes. The Cathedral’s Stewardship Committee has selected the Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving in our stewardship education emphasis this year. ͻ Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. One parishioner, nearing ƚŚĞ ĞŶĚ ŽĨ Ă ůĞŶŐƚŚǇ ƌĞĐƵƉĞƌĂƟŽŶ͕ ƚŽůĚ ŵĞ ƐŚĞ ŚĂĚ ǁƌŝƩĞŶ ŽǀĞƌ ϮϬ ƚŚĂŶŬͲǇŽƵ ŶŽƚĞƐ ŝŶ ĂƉƉƌĞĐŝĂƟŽŶ ĨŽƌ ƚŚĞ ƚĞŶĚĞƌ care and visits she had received. The ŽŶŐŽŝŶŐ ǁŽƌŬ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ WĂƐƚŽƌĂů ĂƌĞ teams is incredible. Last winter, I approached the Brothers of St. Andrew’s and other individuĂůƐ ĂƐŬŝŶŐ ŝĨ ƚŚĞǇ would become ƵĐŚĂƌŝƐƟĐ sŝƐŝtors, parishioners ǁŚŽ ƚĂŬĞ ƉĂƌƚ of the elements
