THE VERY REVEREND CAROL WADE Dean & Rector

Creating sacred rhythms invites us to become a people rooted in faith and growing in gratitude.

eep in the heart of every human being is a desire to be fully alive. Not just to exist but to thrive. Do you have a sacred rhythm for your life that makes you feel alive? Or do you long to live life at a different pace? This year at Christ Church Cathedral, we will begin the life giving adventure of “Creating Sacred Rhythms” and what that can mean for us, and the world we serve. Scripture tells us that there is a time for everything and that God has made everything beautiful in time. At Christ Church Cathedral, creating sacred rhythms is about listening to an ancient echo deep within that opens into resonant pathways to our true selves and to God, The benefits are profound. Creating sacred rhythms invites us to become a people rooted in faith and growing in gratitude. As a community, we have had an astonishing year of celebration, spiritual growth and blessing. Now, an exciting year unfolds before us. Whether we are returning to Christ Church Cathedral after a time of summer rest and refreshment, a life-changing mission trip or choir tour, or discovering the Cathedral for the first time, there is satisfaction and exhilaration in the sacred rhythms of life at Christ Church. We gather on Rally Day, our annual fall kickoff on Sunday, August 31, followed by a cook out after the 11:00 service. There will be fun activities for all ages, and a ministry fair that will enable us to explore the many opportunities for growing in God through learning and service. Be sure to browse through our spiritual formation booklet for the many offerings this fall at Christ Church Cathedral. We will explore “Creating Sacred Rhythms” through book groups, spiritual practices, Sunday school classes, worship and opportunities for fun, fellowship and mission. If you are eager to find a design for your life that accords with your creativity as it propels your life in service, prayer and generosity, we invite you on this exciting journey at Christ Church Cathedral. The promise is this: Creating sacred rhythms can reveal our deepest selves and highest purpose as we become more fully alive. When we live a life in sync with God and in tune with others we thrive and God’s love overflows the places in our lives and the world. With gratitude,

erea artist Jonathan Clark will co-curate the Art at the Cathedral’s upcoming Kentucky Returning show. The exhibit will highlight Kentucky and Appalachian original artwork and will be on display from September through November. Jonathan is a graduate of Berea College and has a studio in Berea. He also teaches painting workshops in the Central Kentucky area. In fact, Jonathan will be leading a painting workshop at CCC on September 10 which is open to all. (See the registration information in this issue of Prayer & Action.) The Kentucky Returning exhibit will include Jonathan’s paintings as well as his collaborative work with Jeff Enge, a potter and co-owner of Tater Knob Pottery outside of Berea. Additionally, the exhibit will feature works by Brenda Richardson, a local Berea photographer. Jonathan’s artist statement perfectly describes the exhibit: “This body of work is a unique expression of this cultural experience in that is collaborative between Kentucky artists from various places and backgrounds working together in their own distinct artistic voice toward a common creative goal. The work of each of the artists is inspired from a deep connection to Kentucky, to its natural and cultural beauty, and from its artistic traditions. These works raise awareness of Kentucky's social and environmental perplexities, while celebrating its progression toward a greater appreciation of our hills and rivers, our community and our selves. These works speak together of a culture that

is rediscovering its heritage and redefining its future. Kentucky Returning is the result of a new awakening to our artistic lineage, our own beauty, a rediscovering of our true wealth and a celebration of our time and place in Kentucky.” Please save the date for the next Gallery Hop on September 19 from 5-8 p.m. at Christ Church. This will be an ideal time to meet Jonathan and hear some Bluegrass Music as we celebrate our Appalachian and Kentucky heritage. Also, a reminder that the Quilt Artists of Kentucky exhibit will continue to be on display in the Great Hall and the quilt artists will be present at the Gallery Hop. The August 2014 Prayer & Action has an article about the quilt exhibit. ൪

Sarah Combs, author of Breakfast Served Anytime, and member of Christ Church Cathedral

On Wednesday, September 3, we welcome Sarah Combs as our first Kentucky author in our new Wednesday night series, Living by Words. Sarah Combs was born and raised in Louisville but has spent more than half her life in Lexington. She worked as a Jane-of-All-Trades at the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning, where she leads workshops for writers of all ages. Her debut novel for young adults, Breakfast Served Anytime, draws on her experiences at the Kentucky Governor’s Scholars Program and the Governor’s School for the Arts. Sarah’s second novel is forthcoming from Candlewick Press in spring, 2016, and she is hard at work on a third.
