Annual Report 2008 - 2009

F

or twenty five years, the success of our school has been the result of the passion and efforts of each and every member of the school community. The dedicated, talented faculty and staff deliver a product that is truly unique in our area.

D

espite the weak national economy, the school has been blessed with continued strong enrollment and generous donors. These factors, coupled with our emphasis on fiscal discipline, provide a strong foundation for the next quarter century.

T T

he fiscal results reported here reflect our steadfast, strident and enduring orientation to maximize the resources allocated directly to instruction.

he willingness and generosity of families, grandparents, alumni and friends to provide ongoing financial support allow us to enrich programs and curriculum and help us bridge the gap between tuition and our actual cost per student. Tuition and fees cover eighty-nine percent of the actual cost of a CES education. This equates to approximately $1,300 per student for the 2009-2010 school year. Fundraising, through such endeavors as the Annual Giving campaign and Art at the Park, is the way this gap is bridged.

Y

our generosity last year, detailed in this report, is an indication of your goodwill and recognition of our efforts. We hope that we can increase participation in the 2009-2010 Annual Fund in order to demonstrate that we as the CES family have made the school’s mission a priority and dedicated our own funds to its future.

Y

ou have given your time, efforts or dollars on behalf of the school in countless ways. At times these might have been unrecognized, but without your continued support, CES as we know it would cease to exist. So, thank you most sincerely. We pledge to continue to strive to honor your trust with our best efforts in this important work.

The Idea of an Episcopal School* 1. An Episcopal School is a concrete expression of the Church’s care for young people and their families.

At Christ Episcopal School, children come first. Each child is special, a unique child of God. Our goal is to prepare our children for living in God’s world, with all their rights and privileges, duties and responsibilities. 2. An Epsicopal School values reason as a way to true understanding. At Christ Episcopal, intellectual curiosity is prized, and students are challenged to think independently and critically, to act creatively and collaboratively. We are life-long learners with a strong Christian ethic and morality, preparing to become involved and responsible citizens. 3. An Episcopal School has a concern for the well-being of society. Christ Epsicopal students learn that they do not exist apart from society, and they are called to respond to the needs of others. We are called to act justly and to call others to do so. We are challenged to imitate Christ and to instill peace, at school and in the world. 4. The unity of an Episcopal School is based on ritual and tradition rather than doctrine. At Christ Episcopal, religious and spiritual formation is integrated into all aspects of the educational experience. We are a community that honors, celebrates, and worships God as the center of life. 5. An Episcopal School values freedom and diversity of belief. At Christ Episcopal, we model acceptance of self and others as unique, divinely appointed creations. We honor values that unite people rather than those that divide. We encourage reverence for each other’s beliefs, and we strive to treat all with charity, kindness, and respect. 6. An Episcopal School is founded on love. Love for students as unique children of God is the hallmark of Christ Episcopal School. Our faculty, imbued with a spirit of humility and profound purpose, pledge to act out of love, teach love, to model love, and to love one another in our school community. *Published by the National Association of Episcopal Schools

They are used as needed for salaries, development, instructional items for academics, P.E., athletics, utilities and plant expenses, as well as other program enhancements. These funds close the gap between tuition charged and the total cost to educate a CES student. Funds from parent fund raisers are used primarily for technology and other instructional enhancements as well as faculty development and facilities and grounds improvements. Capital Project Gifts and Pledges are designated for new facilities, further development of the site, and building an endowment for the future. Restricted gifts are designated by the donor.

“Building on a Solid Foundation” 2008-2013 Strategic Plan September 2009 Progress Report

“Building on a Solid Foundation” anticipates that we continue to improve upon the 25 year tradition of excellence in early childhood, elementary and middle school education as we expand it through the 12th grade. This plan addresses continual improvement and growth of our educational program and extracurricular opportunities as well as ways to strengthen the school financially. We will continue to provide a vibrant Christian learning environment which develops in our students the skills and character needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. During the 20082009 year, we were fortunate to reach some of the plan’s early benchmarks.

Goal 1: Refine and enhance the educational program, ensuring it reflects the mission, principles and values of CES. Our teachers and staff strive each day to go beyond the classroom walls so that “Imitate Christ” are living and vibrant words, discernable in all aspects of campus life. We continue to nurture spirituality by making the Christian education components more meaningful and rewarding for students. During the 2008-2009 year, planning for improved and expanded student worship with the Rector was completed. These new liturgies began with the 2009-2010 school year. Goal 2: Continue to attract, recruit, retain and develop faculty and staff who embrace and emulate the missions and values of CES. Teachers are the core of the school’s success. Over half of our faculty hold a master’s degree, and the average number of years teaching experience is 17. Our average tenure is 7.5 years for current full-time faculty. Over $20,000 was expended in 2008-2009 for a wide range of professional development opportunities for our faculty. Our benefit plan has been enhanced to provide our faculty with a comprehensive package that is competitive with other schools and businesses. Goal 3: Ensure ethnic diversity. CES has endeavored to address issues of affordability by managing tuition levels and increasing financial aid available. The FACTS Tuition Management system provides families with increased flexibility on payment options and methods. Accessibility to all socio-economic groups, to promote cultural and social diversity, continues to be a key priority of our school’s administration. Goal 4: Create an Upper School Program, adding grades 9 through 12. As the 2009-2010 school year began, the new Upper School building was completed and a ninth grade class was established. John Morvant, with a wealth of 32 years of experience from St. Paul’s School in Covington, has been hired as head of the Upper School. He and his talented faculty colleagues bring a rich educational background to our 8th and 9th grade students. This group of educators has developed a strong college preparatory program that challenges students to be accountable ethically, spiritually and intellectually.

8

Goal 5: Continue to improve the physical environment and plant to enhance student learning, strengthen Christian identity, embrace our extended community, maximize safety and reflect our mission and vision. A joint committee comprised of members of the Vestry, the CES Board of Trustees, and the Christwood Retirement Community Board met throughout 2008-2009 to address the planned growth surrounding the Christwood campus. Recommendations regarding traffic flow, property development and other global site issues are being finalized this fall. During 2009-2010, the Master Site, Finance and Development Committees of the Board will work with the administration to define future needs, including classrooms, performing arts, and worship space. The end result will be a comprehensive case for support that will support future capital as well as endowment fundraising. The school administration participated in a parish-wide project funded by FEMA to formalize and standardize emergency plans in order to ensure that response to any emergency at the school or in our community is acted upon in a coordinated manner and first responders have accurate and up-to-date information about and access to facilities.

Goal 6: Raise funds to ensure the short and long-term viability of CES by developing a “culture of philanthropy.” The Business and Advancement team expanded in 2009 with the addition of a Director of Development. The Development Director will execute the annual Advancement Plan and coordinate the fundraising goals and objectives necessary to create a “culture of philanthropy” at CES. This effort encompasses improving Annual Giving particiaption, and building the endowment to augment faculty salaries and benefits and facilities maintenance. It also includes support for Art at the Park fundraising as well as developing relationships with donors for future campus facility expansion. Goal 7: Further develop the Board of Trustees to ensure effective planning and leadership. The role of the Board of Trustees is to “hold the school in trust” for future generations. The hiring of and collaboration with the Head of the School on policy and planning issues is its main role. As the school leadership transitions from Greg Homer to John Morvant, the Board of Trustees is committed to meeting the school’s most critical future needs. These are finalizing the plan for infrastructure and property development, raising the necessary capital to meet the most pressing priorities, and building the “Securing Our Future” endowment fund in order to ensure the school’s financial stability for future generations. The Development Committee plans to provide Board training to all members so that every Board member understands and can communicate the future plans for the school and increase their roles as advocates and ambassadors of the plans. The Board of Trustees held an orientation meeting in early September, 2009 to introduce and review the goals and operating objectives to all members of the Board. This meeting included an overview by each division head and a financial overview, and provided essential training to make sure that every board member is ready to serve.

Annual Fund 2008 - 2009 “Celebrate Each Student

The Annual Giving Fund is an essential component of our annual operating budget. The funds raised each year allow CES to better support innovations in teaching, low student/teacher ratios, upgrades to technology, maintenance of our expanding facility, our service learning projects, and to continue to develop a program aligned with our mission and learning goals. In light of the economic climate during 20082009, we were blessed with a continued base of committed donors and are extremely grateful to everyone who participated. The total dollars raised were $167,636. This was a decrease of 14% from the 20072008 amount of $195,695. Gifts from current parents decreased 18% from $115,184 to $94,832 and the percent participation by parents decreased from 51% to 40%. Alumni giving remained steady and accounted for 5% of the total. Giving by grandparents declined slightly from $32,440 to $29,694. Giving by members of the Board of Trustees increased by 13% and had 100% participation. Foundation and gifts by other friends of the school accounted for approximately 10% of the total.
