Annual Report 2009 - 2010
“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high, but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” Michelangelo
Dear Parents and Friends, A change in the leadership of a school provides a unique opportunity to take an objective look at both curricular and extracurricular programs, and to examine the general direction the school is headed. Particularly at a school like Christ Episcopal, which today spans twelve different grade levels and four separate academic divisions, keeping focused on long term goals amidst the ongoing demands of day to day operations is a formidable challenge, requiring mission-driven vision and strategic planning. The above quotation from Michelango is appropriate here: we’re all about aiming high at Christ Episcopal School. In May of 2008, after a process which spanned 18 months, the Strategic Planning Committee of Christ Episcopal School’s Board of Trustees, with input from 95% of our stakeholders, formulated Strategic Plan 2008-2013, entitled “Building on a Solid Foundation.” As we approach the mid-way point in the implementation of that plan, it is an appropriate time to reflect on the progress we have made and on the goals we have yet to reach. The entire Strategic Plan is found on the school’s website. Listed below are just some of the goals we have met since the Strategic Plan was adopted by the Board in 2008.
WHAT HAVE WE ACCOMPLISHED? • We have renewed our commitment to revising and assessing curriculum using MAP data and State standards and benchmarks, as well as the use of Curriculum Mapping for ongoing curriculum review and planning. • We have examined and revitalized the Christian Education program, officially adopting Godly Play (Pre K-4) and the Episcopal Children’s Curriculum (Middle School) as curriculum models, and adding a Character Education component on each grade level. • Our continued commitment to incorporating technology into the curriculum is evidenced by the installation of Promethean and SMART Boards in most classrooms, procuring new mobile laptop labs for student use, and acquiring software, flip cameras and other equipment to make student videos. 2
• Our wilderness education program has been enhanced with the addition of experiential learning opportunities for students in upper grades. • We continue to attract experienced teachers to our faculty who embrace and emulate our mission. • We have established an Upper School program, currently serving 18 students in grades 9 and 10, which reflects well the values of the school’s mission and operating principles. Key components of the new high school: attract exceptional teachers; create challenging, college prep curriculum; establish engaging extracurricular activities. • We are committed to revitalizing the school’s athletic program by attracting and hiring competent coaches, inaugurating an athletic booster club, establishing new athletic opportunities for students (lacrosse, swimming), improving athletic and play facilities and procuring needed equipment. • An additional classroom building was opened in the fall of 2009 to accommodate the short-term needs of the high school program. • Long term plans for Phase 4 of the Christwood Boulevard Campus expansion are established, featuring new buildings and athletic facilities which will be used by students in each division. • Funding plans and building designs for the campus expansion have been formulated and processes begun. While much has been accomplished, very much still needs to be addressed. We will continue to use the Strategic Plan as a compass to direct our efforts in the years ahead. As we begin our second quarter century, and as the challenges of continued commercial and residential growth on the Northshore and an unpredictable economy confront us, we move ahead. The school administration and the leadership of the Board are committed to the goals formulated in 2008. Our new logo and tagline, “Growing With Grace”, embodies our vision and plans. It remains our prayer that God’s grace will, indeed, inspire our efforts, as we remain focused on the mission to create a superior academic opportunity for our children amidst a strong and nurturing Christian environment. And we ask you to join us in the months and years ahead, as we continue to build on that Solid Foundation and aim high to expand and improve the opportunities available to the students and families of Christ Episcopal.

are primarily gifts to the Annual Fund and other gifts for current school operations. They are used as needed for salaries, development, instructional items for academics, P.E., athletics, utilities and plant expenses, as well as other program enhancements. These funds make the difference between tuition charged and the total cost to educate a CES student. Funds from parent fund raisers are used primarily for technology and other instructional enhancements as well as faculty development and facilities and grounds improvements. Capital Project Gifts and Pledges are designated for new facilities, further development of the site, and building an endowment for the future. Restricted gifts are designated by the donor.

Christwood Boulevard Campus Expansion 2010-2020
During 2009-2010, The Board of Trustees approved a master site plan to guide the future growth of the school. The expansion anticipates facility needs that will be necessary to continue to meet the school’s mission to provide a rigorous, creative curriculum for our students, and to help them grow physically, spiritually and intellectually. A “Center of Inquiry” will be the cornerstone of the expansion. It will be approximately 16,000 square feet of creative, flexible instructional space. It will be built in phases and eventually house four to six classrooms, a library/media center, offices, gallery space and a professional theatre when it is completed. In conjunction with the expansion of the campus, planning is underway to move the Early Childhood Center to the Christwood Campus. The consolidation of the two locations will provide innumerable operating benefits as well as allow us to plan state of the art space for our youngest students.

Annual Fund 2009 - 2010 “Celebrate Each Student”
The Annual Giving Fund is an essential component of our annual operating budget. The funds raised each year allow CES to better support innovations in teaching, low student/teacher ratios, upgrades to technology, maintenance of our expanding facility, our service learning projects, and to continue to develop a program aligned with our mission and learning goals. In 2009-2010, we were blessed with a continued base of committed donors and are extremely grateful to everyone who participated. The total dollars raised were $138,324. This was a decrease of 17% from the 20082009 amount of $167,636. Although gifts from current parents decreased 11% from $94,832 to $85,874, the percent of parent participation increased from 40% to 56%. Alumni giving accounted for 6% of the total. Giving by grandparents decreased significantly from $29,694 to $12,430. Giving by members of the Board of Trustees increased by 3% and retained 100% participation. Foundation and gifts by other friends of the school accounted for approximately 9% of the total.
