Introduction Welcome to the Shopping & Services Guide, containing useful information about the Town, its surroundings, its shops & services, and a diary to keep you occupied for the rest of the year. Please keep it for reference!
Christchurch
I moved here in 1981 and I live in the centre of the Town. I also have a business – Williams Thompson solicitors - in Bridge Street. Because of where I work and live I know how much Christchurch has to offer. Please come and see for yourself. You will find a range of interesting independent shops and cafes blended with household names. There are excellent pubs and restaurants catering for every taste from AA starred to fast food, and plenty of places to stay, ranging from four star hotels to excellent bed and breakfast establishments. There’s an International Food & Wine Festival in May, the Christmas festival, the Monday market and the annual regatta on Christchurch Quay. Why not visit Christchurch or Highcliffe Castles, the two museums or the famous Priory. If it’s a nice day there’s Christchurch Quay with the newly opened splash park or a trip on either of the two ferries. You could visit Mudeford Quay at the entrance to the harbour where you can while away the day on Avon beach, the sandspit, or watching the fishermen. Christchurch has just been designated a Heart Town by the British Heart Foundation which will start with the flagship Head2Head walk on 28th May. Organised by the Heart Foundation and Christchurch Round Table it is a 6 ½ mile walk right around the beautiful Christchurch harbour. What better way to sample what Christchurch has to offer? Christchurch prides itself on being one of the most pleasant and safe towns in the country – our town motto is “Where Time is Pleasant” – please come and prove us right! C h r i s t c h u r c h F o o d a n d W ine Festival 2011 The Festival was originally held as an event to celebrate the Millennium in 2000 and its success that year led the organisers to make it an annual event, now in its twelfth year. The idea for the event came from Mary Reader, then at Christchurch Chamber of Trade and Commerce, to promote Christchurch as a place to visit. A group representing the Chamber of Trade, Christchurch Borough Council and Christchurch Tourism Association was set up to take the project forward. The group was originally chaired by Mary Reader who has now become the President of the Festival.
event which aimed to educate people in healthy eating as well as the availability of different foods, where to buy them and how to prepare them. It has attracted a number of celebrity chefs over the years including Anton Edelman, James Martin, Gary Rhodes, JeanChristophe Novelli, Paul Rankin, Brian Turner and Nick Nairn. Well-known TV chef, Lesley Waters, is a regular at the event and has now become the patron of the Festival. The celebrity chefs and many local chefs do cookery demonstrations, housed in a marquee in Saxon Square. An international food market also takes place over the first weekend in the High Street, with more than 100 stalls.
Christchurch already had a number of high class restaurants and many fine cafes, tea rooms and public houses serving good food. It was decided to build upon this and at the same time encourage all food establishments to strive towards excellence. The Festival was also developed as a community
Each year a Kids’ Kitchen is held to enable children to find out more about food and to encourage healthy eating.

Christchurch Priory
A Brief History In 1094 Ranulf Flambard, a chief minister of King William II (Rufus) began the building of a Norman church on the site of the old Saxon Priory. In 1099 Flambard was appointed Bishop of Durham, but work continued under his successors in the office of Dean of Thuinam Priory, and by about 1150 it would have comprised a basic Norman cruciform church namely a nave (up to Triforium level) with its north and south aisles; probably a central tower; and an apsidalended quire extending eastwards from the crossing at the nave to about as far as the sanctuary steps in the present quire. During this period of the 12th century it is probable that the legend of the Miraculous Beam originated, a legend which changed the name of the town from the Saxon Thuinam to the present day Christchurch. In 1150 Baldwin de Redvers, Lord of the Manor and Earl of Devon, in conjunction with his son and heir Richard de Redvers and influenced by Henri de Blois, Bishop of Winchester and brother of King Stephen dissolved the
secular Priory and reconstituted it as a Priory of Canons Regular of the Order of St Augustine of Hippo and by charter granted it the freehold of the land on which it was built. Reginald was elected the first Prior. Building work continued and in the 13th century the nave aisles were vaulted and the clerestory built in the Early English style. The North Porch was commenced and the Montacute Chapels in Early English style replaced the Norman apse on the east side of the North Transept. By 1350 the Nave roof had been lifted to its present height. A spire may have been built on the central Norman tower at this time or a little later. Towards the end of the 14th century the Lady Chapel was started in early Perpendicular Gothic style. It was completed and vaulted early in the 15th century. St Michael’s Loft, now the church museum, was built over the Lady Chapel in the same century. It is reputed that about 1415 the central Norman tower and spire either collapsed or was taken down as part of planned reconstruction. The old Norman quire was rebuilt in the Perpendicular Gothic style in the 15th century, and the new Lady Chapel. The result of the work, completed early in the 16th century, is the Great Quire of today. A new tower in the Perpendicular style was erected at the west end of the church in 1470/80 to replace the old central tower. The large Salisbury Chantry and the Draper Chantry were built in 1529. In 1539 the dissolution of the Priory took place, the last Prior, John Draper, surrendering it to King Henry VIII’s Commissioners. It is said that the King had intended to pull down the church but that in response to a plea from the townspeople he relented, and in 1540 he granted the church to the churchwardens and inhabitants of Christchurch to be used as the Parish Church in perpetuity.
Courtesy of Bournemouth Helicopters
On February 12th 1612 King James I confirmed the above grant by his own letters latent and testified that the original grant had been enrolled in Chancery. After the Dissolution a corporation known as ‘The Sixteen’ was formed under legislation passed in the Elizabethan Parliament which became largely responsible for the affairs of the Parish. The Vicar and the Churchwardens were the principal officers. The 900th Anniversary west window of the North Transept was installed in 1999. A new pipe organ was dedicated on July 17th 1999. 30

Highcliffe Castle Visitor Information We recommend that visits start in the Great Hall where there are information boards on the Castle’s history. Each room also has a room information sheet. Additionally we have a dedicated team of volunteer stewards who will be happy to answer any of your questions.
Highcliffe Castle has been described as arguably the most important surviving house of the Romantic and Picturesque style of architecture, which flourished at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. Its significance is recognised nationally by its Grade 1 status on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural and Historical Interest.
Alternatively a Castle Guidebook is available to purchase which gives the full details of this intriguing building. Price £3.50. Castle Information sheets are available in French, Spanish, Italian and German.
There is an international importance, too. For a large amount of medieval French masonry, shipped across the Channel, was used in its construction. It is this Norman and Renaissance carved stone, along with the Castle’s Gothic revival features and ancient stained glass, that make it appear older than it is.
2011 Admission Charges Adults £2.95 Accompanied Children Under 16 Free Season Ticket Holders Free HHA members Free Group discounts are available for parties of more than 10 people. Please contact the site for further details and a booking form 01425 278807. The Dining Room does not form part of the normal admission but will be open when not in use. Rooms may be closed due to exhibition change-over or events. We recommend that you phone beforehand if you are coming to visit a specific exhibition.
Built mainly between 1831 and 1836, the Castle is the realisation of one man’s fantasy. He was Lord Stuart de Rothesay, a distinguished diplomat who had known and loved the cliff-top site overlooking Christchurch Bay since he was a boy. The magnificent building, once lavishly furnished in the 18th century French style remained a family home until the 1950s. In the late 1960s two fires rendered the building derelict and in 1977, to prevent futher deterioration, Christchurch Borough Council purchased it.
Exhibitions The Library galleries provide a magnificent backdrop for history, art and craft exhibitions. This varied programme offers something for all tastes and ages whilst promoting the best local artists.
Today the Castle’s renovated exterior is testimony of the remarkable skills of craftsmen and women who carried out a huge repair and conservation programme in the 1990s, jointly funded by Christchurch Borough Council, English Heritage and a £2.65 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. In 1998 a further programme of renovation was completed to enable public access to the State Dining Room, Butler’s Pantry and East Tower.
Events Each year the Castle hosts an exciting programme of events that offers something for all tastes. Within the castle staterooms we offer talks, workshops, crafts fairs and evening concerts. Whereas outdoor highlights include car rallies, theatre and big band jazz and swing concerts.
The Castle is now a popular tourist attraction, community space and wedding venue.
Please find details of our current exhibitions and events in the What’s On section of our website: www.highcliffecastle.co.uk

Take Seven Chefs Stephen Lavender Riverside Sopley Mill (p41) After college, I trained in the big 5 star hotels of the West end of London, then Bishopstowe House, near Warminster. Having had a fast lesson in growing up, I began to eat up life in the Hotel Industry. Not long after, I made a move to the West Coast of Canada, where I took over a specialist Seafood Restaurant for 2 years.
Colin Nash - The Three Tuns (p36) Colin’s first experience of the world of cooking came at just 13 years old, helping his mum make prawn cocktails at a little restaurant in Christchurch. After training at Bournemouth and Poole College and Langan’s Brasserie, Colin secured his first job in the industry at The Olde Times Restaurant in Christchurch (now called Sobs). The experience Colin gained during this time proved invaluable; he learns that to be a great chef takes time, hard work and a respect and understanding of the produce you work with. ‘...so much to be passionate about...’ Colin cooks with a subtle approach, searching for the perfect marriage of quality produce, flavours and textures. He now applies this wisdom to the menu at the ever-popular, award-winning Three Tuns Inn an exceptional country inn and restaurant on the edge of the New Forest. His culinary expertise has certainly not gone unnoticed; The Three Tuns has been awarded two AA rosettes, as well as having been recognised in Egon Ronay’s Guide to the Best Restaurants and Gastropubs in the UK. For Colin, there’s so much to enjoy about being a chef, so much to be passionate about: the list of foods to play with seasonally and locally, and the constant opportunity to learn and develop, to absorb new styles and to incorporate new ingredients into your cooking. From kitchen porter to award-winning head chef, Colin is a prime example of a chef who has made good food his life.
Returning to Christchurch, I quickly gained 2 AA rosettes at a local Hotel, holding them for 7 years, a short sabbatical in Nepal followed, upon my return I started up Fishworks in Christchurch. Running the kitchens of the Highcliffe Marriot was my next challenge, working through the Conservative and Liberal Democrats Conferences was definitely challenging – but rewarding. I have always loved the great outdoors, be it fishing, hiking or kayaking… and have now found an ideal workplace – on the river, menagerie of wildlife and fishing – what more could I ask for!

Simon Hallam the Crooked Beam Like many of the great culinary masters of past and present, Simon Hallam started his career at a tender age, observing his grandmother as she cooked. This home grown inspiration saw cooking become his passion. After completing his training in Northampton, Simon moved south to progress his career. Classing himself as an ‘all-rounder’ Simon’s style is traditional with a modern twist. Simon has been the chef proprietor of the AA Rosette awarded Crooked Beam Restaurant for over 6 years and continues to develop his award winning style of cooking and presentation to ensure that every dish leaving his kitchen offers perfect, mouth-watering food, presented with unique style and optimum quality and taste. continued...
