Women are being encouraged to support Breast Cancer Care during Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October by donating their old and unwanted bras as well as attending ‘Pink’ events to raise vital funds for the charity – Breast Cancer Care. Curves, Wimborne has installed a bra bank for both members and non-members to donate any unwanted bras. £1 will be donated to Breast Cancer Care for every kilo (roughly 17 bras) collected. Bras are then sent on to those in need or recycled. This year Curves Wimborne would like to help Breast Cancer Care support even more people affected by breast cancer. So we are urging all local women to raid their drawers and support this fantastic cause. “Everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer in some way, so it’s hugely important that the local community supports these fundraising initiatives. The money raised will enable Breast Cancer Care to continue

to deliver its wide ranging practical and emotional support services to the 46,000 people affected by breast cancer in the UK every year. In our community Wimborne In Bloom Duck Race

The 12th Wimborne in Bloom Duck Race on 27th August raised £1,100 towards ‘In Bloom’ funds and in particular the Autumn planting.

The Town Mayor and Mayoress Councillors Robin and Sue Cook along with members of the Wimborne in Bloom Committee launched the Ducks into the River Allen by the Riverside Mews Café bridge. With the recent rain the river level had risen a little and the first ducks to cross the finishing line at the Rising Sun Car Park completed their journey in just over fifteen minutes. The rest of the field followed in hot pursuit! The winning Duck No. 870 was owned by Rosalyn Barnes who won £50. Second home was Duck 689 owned by Geoff Savill, who won £25. Third Duck was No.152 owned by Vivienne Offer who won £10. There were £5 prizes for the owners of the fourth, fifth and sixth ducks home.The last Duck home No.987 won a ‘Bottle of Wine’ donated by The Rising Sun, for its owner Alana Jones. All 1100 ducks had been pre-sold at £1 a time thanks to the Co-Operative and Waitrose Supermarkets allowing members of Wimborne in Bloom a selling point at their entrance.

Town Wins Small Town Title with Gold Award

For the first time since 2006 the Town of Wimborne Minster has won the Small Town Title in the Regional South and South East in Bloom Competition with a Gold Medal Award. The judges said they were impressed with the impact of the floral displays and were pleased to see more sustainable planting. The Waitrose Grounds came in for credit with the new sustainable planting and the creation of a new open space. The wheelchair friendly Redcotts Recreation Ground was immaculate with the comment the judges had not seen a “Rec” so well presented. The walk alongside the river Allen had very good information boards. It was pleasing to see that Wimborne in Bloom is working in partnership with other agencies. The judges could tell that the community are proud of their town as everywhere was exceptional with no litter, fly posting, graffiti, dog fouling or weeds in the streets. They praised the work of the Wimborne Volunteers known as the “Wombles” which was quite outstanding. There were too many people and organisations to mention individually – well done to all of you. In addition Wimborne was a runner up for the Community Involvement Award. Anthony Oliver thanked not only the ‘In Bloom’ Committee for all their hard work but also everyone who assisted in helping us to achieve such splendid results. Autumn Subjects

Nature is now shutting down for the winter but photographic options and opportunities are not. We associate rich warm colours, dew, mist, seeds, berries, nuts, fungi and falling leaves with this season. Close to Home Many of the illustrations this month have been taken in my own garden. You do not have to go great distances to find attractive glimpses of Autumn as heath land, woodlands and rivers are never far away. Time of Day Early morning is excellent for capturing mist and dew. If you’re walking the dog, walk with the camera as well. Cobwebs are very common as are seed heads and both are improved when covered with water droplets.When moving close to a subject to capture detail, depth of focus is limited. Being square onto the subject e.g. the spider ensures the whole image is sharp. The dew-covered web in the trees picture shows careful focus/ subject/ depth of field selection throwing foreground and background out of focus. Lighting I have often referred to lighting in these articles. Back lighting is one of my favorites and both the clematis seed head and the late flowering anemones are enhanced by this technique. Flat lighting can be useful as with the bracket fungi on the tree allowing a lot of detail in the picture. Colour Converting misty scenes to black and white can enhance the ‘atmosphere’ of the image as with the woodland picture. Contrasting colours will produce strong, vivid images as with the red leaves against the rich green of the conifer.
