This is a generic term as it can include urban, rural, wilderness, sea and night as well as day. When faced with a sweeping vista, our eyes take in the whole scene. If there is a desire to get snapping the tendency is to set the zoom lens to as wide a setting as possible and discover that it’s not wide enough. The resulting pictures are often disappointing. Reasons and what to do about it. Distance is stretched when using a wideangle lens so the further away parts of the image disappear into the distance and detail is lost. The other big problem is a large empty foreground. If you want to use a wide angle make sure there is foreground interest. This could be a tree, boulder, person sitting on a log or even a breakwater if photographing the sea. The horizon should not be through the centre of the picture. This splits the composition and the eye keeps flipping from sky to foreground. Place the horizon either a third down from the top or a third up from the bottom depending on where the most interest is, either foreground or sky. Try using a telephoto lens setting to photograph less of the scene. This will bring the distance closer (foreshortening) meaning that hills appear to be larger and more as the eye sees them. Generally with a photograph decide what to leave out, not what to put in. Have a go and see what you get.

The Chancellor has delivered his final Budget of the current Parliament, highlighting issues of relevance to most of us. Firstly, by freezing the Inheritance Tax (IHT) threshold at £325,000 until 2015, hundreds of thousands more Britons will be caught up in becoming liable to IHT. With tax at 40% over the threshold, it is vital for people to make sure that as much of their estate as possible stays out of the taxman’s grasp and goes to their chosen beneficiaries, by way of careful planning. One area of investment where people can easily escape the Chancellor’s grasp is the taxefficient haven of the ever-popular ISA (Individual Savings Account). Apart from pensions, ISAs represent the most tax-efficient way to save and invest for the future, and the Chancellor confirmed the increase in the ISA limit from £7,200 to £10,200 from April 2010. It is important that people maximise the opportunity this presents. The tax efficiency and flexibility of ISAs assume greater value as taxes rise. They are easily accessible and withdrawals are paid with no tax liability. However, it should be remembered that the favourable tax treatment of ISAs may be subject to future changes. With new measures affecting pensions, the need for people to continue to save hard for their retirement remains. With people living longer and a reduction in support from the State, it remains critical for people to plan effectively for their retirement to avoid the risk of outliving their savings. It is paramount that people determine the most effective way to save given their specific circumstances, understand the consequences and costs of delay, commit to a plan and take action as soon as possible, and professional advice should be sought to this end. I have lost a few tender things because they were in pots and so much more susceptible to frost, but everything else I thought was dead is belatedly coming into life. And the slow, cold start was wonderful for the spring flowers. The gorgeous mimosa in the garden next door was in flower for two months! I think it was good for killing off bugs too – my purple-sprouting broccoli didn’t suffer from caterpillars this winter. We hear of new bugs all the time though and I’ve dumped all my lilies because of the red lily beetle: I’m just too squeamish to squash it. Now in this lovely prolonged period of warmer weather, the garden is just rushing into life and getting noticeably greener every day. With the increased day length we can be out all hours sowing seeds, taking tip cuttings and splitting our perennials so that we have a wonderful supply of lovely young plants for the Hardy Plant Society’s Spring Plant Sale in Colehill Memorial Hall on May 8th – the place to buy locally grown unusual plants at bargain prices!! The World Needs an Epidemic of Self Esteem

by Christina Hunt, Mixed Emotions Low self esteem is usually at the root of all emotional problems. It is also at the root of wars, racism etc. How you feel about yourself touches every part of your life and also affects others around you. Self esteem affects the choices we make in life: choices such as buying clothes, deciding what to eat, what to learn, what career to have, choosing people to form relationships with. It also affects our ability to end relationships. Your sense of ‘self’ can often stop you from doing what you wish you could do in your life. Intuition is connected to self esteem. When you have low self esteem you may choose to ignore that voice within you that is guiding you. If life directs you to something you have never done it tests your faith in yourself. If you need approval from others to accept the voice within then you are not trusting yourself, or having faith that you can cope with the unknown. Do you want to develop your self esteem? The choice is yours. Some important questions to ask yourself are; Do you like your physical appearance? What are the reasons you don’t feel good about yourself? Do you know your own road map? In order to answer these questions you need to face your shadow. Asking for instance, is there any jealousy or envy in me, what parts of me are insecure? It takes a lot of the ‘self’ to look at your own shadow. It takes as much self esteem to recognise what you have got to give this world as it does to recognise you’ve got low self esteem. How often do you apologise for being an incredible person? In order to become the person you were born to be you need to recognise that the way you think about yourself is of utmost importance. Emotional Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy helps people who are suffering turmoil in their lives. They are essentially ‘talking therapies’, however they differ from other forms of counselling in that rather than simply using the mind to analyse symptoms, they promotes healing by working through feelings. The creative tools which Emotional Therapists use makes it a gentle, fun and fast working therapy, suitable for children and adults alike. Emotional Therapy encourages greater self-knowledge and personal strength, helping people to effectively cope with and enrich their lives. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy gives people the tools in order to change their behaviour in the here and now.

In a moving address to the guests, Falklands Veteran, Simon Weston OBE spoke of the problems of dealing with disability and urged guests to support the work of Diverse Abilities Plus. “It’s vital that people have the opportunity to live their life, and not merely exist during their life. Diverse Abilities Plus enables them to do just that.” After speaking, Simon spent much time with staff and people supported by the charity and agreed to join with Annette Brooke as a patron. Annette Brooke, Liberal Democrat candidate for Mid Dorset and North Poole explained to guests that the name change had been necessitated because of constant confusion with the national charity, Scope, and the organisation’s intention to broaden the geography of its services across the area.

It may not be a pleasant thought, but unfortunately our pets are constantly at risk of acquiring worms. Until recently, our main concerns regarding worms have been to ensure dogs and cats are protected against roundworms and tapeworms – both of which live in the intestines. In addition, an increasing problem in dogs (but not cats) is lungworm infestation with Angiostrongylus vasorum. Roundworms can grow up to 20cm in length and live in the intestines of dogs and cats. They shed thousands of tiny eggs which pass out in the faeces and contaminate the environment, where the eggs can survive for years. Dogs and cats are re-infected by inadvertently eating the eggs. The eggs also pose some risk to children if they are swallowed. Tapeworms also live in the intestines and can grow up to 5m in length. They shed small segments containing eggs which pass out in the faeces, or which may be found around the tail area. As the segments break down, the eggs may be eaten by an intermediate host; these include small rodents (eg mice) and fleas. Cats commonly catch and eat small rodents and both cats and dogs swallow fleas as they groom themselves, thus re-infecting themselves with tapeworms. The good news is that worms can be prevented by following a few simple rules: worm regularly, ensure continuous flea control, try to avoid dogs eating snails, slugs and frogs and try to keep your garden free of faeces. Lungworm in dogs is caused by the parasite Angiostrongylus vasorum. Severe symptoms include coughing, lethargy, fits and blood clotting problems; although some dogs show no obvious signs of problems. Lungworms live in the pulmonary arteries and right ventricle of the heart. Here they lay eggs, which hatch into larvae and in turn migrate into the airways of the lung. Larvae are then coughed up, swallowed and passed in the dog’s faeces. Slugs, snails and frogs act as intermediate hosts, ingesting the larvae. The intermediate hosts are in turn eaten by dogs (often unwittingly) and the larvae then migrate to the heart and develop into adult worms. Check with your vet that your pet’s worm and flea control are up-to-date!

Lytchett Riding for the Disabled Association Celebrates Thirtieth Anniversary Since being formed in 1980 the Association has provided hundreds of horse riding sessions for local children with disabilities. These sessions are conducted by a small team of volunteers at the Rushall Park Riding Stables. All the children get the opportunity to ride and interact with many of the R u sh a l l Pa rk ’s pon i e s. Whilst learning to work with the animals they develop balance and co-ordination skills through mounted games and activities. For many of the children, riding is the highlight of their week and for some it is nothing less than a lifechanging experience. The Lytchett RDA relies entirely on volunteer helpers and donations. This year the group has been adopted by the Corfe Mullen Carnival as one of its official charities. Information about the Corfe Mullen Carnival Run on Tuesday the 8th June, together with entry and sponsorship forms can be found at www.cm5k.co.uk
