We continue to grow and expand our publications. In May we completed the Official Verwood Carnival Programme, a full colour A4 programme that was again managed by us, designed, printed and delivered door to door plus drop off points and also handed out on the day of the Carnival. We were delighted again to work with Forest FM on this annual event which was a great success – thanks to everyone who supported that. Also in May we expanded our Mini Directories to include Canford Heath & Creekmoor, these are delivered like all our magazines door to door – a minimum of 10,000 mini directories at a time to any one area – if you would like more information please contact us – we can design, produce and deliver leaflets to promote any business or community activity! We are delighted to be working with Chris Slocock and the very successful Minster Press, an established Printing and Publishing Company that is at the heart of our community - founded in 1936 - a second generation family business. Strawberry Fayre – 10th Anniversary On 31st July the Strawberry Fayre will celebrate its 10th anniversary. Started by Sue and Jerry Smith, this quintessentially English afternoon out began at the MS Sturminster Marshall and funds are raised for this local charity. Sue and Jerry’s friend Wendy had been diagnosed with MS and Sue and Jerry decided to support the centre that provided so well for their friend in need. The Cream Tea is the high point of the day. Scone, jam, cream and strawberries served on china plates with real tea is all beautifully served by Sue’s team of helpers. Last year in the rain, the Fayre raised £2,200 and this year we are hoping for better weather and even more funds! To celebrate 65 years since the end of the war, it will feature a retro ‘back to basics’ theme. The Tea ladies will be adorned post-war style, The Verwood Concert Brass Band will perform. The produce will be home-grown and the cakes are all homemade. A Horticultural Show will be judged by David Hurrion of BBC Gardeners World magazine. Also a Cookery competition along a post-war recipe theme which will be judged by local expert Penny Harris of ‘Honest to Goodness’. Penny will award the top prize of a 6 week course at her Cookery School for the winner! In the large marquee there will be skittles, a tombola, ‘Splat the Rat’ and stalls. Outside the marquee will be a wellythrowing competition. Sue, Jerry and the band of merry helpers look forward to welcoming you to the Strawberry Fayre! Ingredients: 2 Breast Chicken or 2 thighs 1 small tin of coconut milk 1-2 Fresh Lemon grass 1-1.5 Cup of water
Opor Paste: 2 Indonesian or Thai Shallots / 1 Italian Shallot ½ medium onion 1-2 cloves of garlic 1 medium plum Tomato – chopped ¼ - ½ Tsp peppercorns ½ Tsp fresh ginger 4-6 Candlenuts ½ Tsp fresh turmeric 1 Tsp Palm Sugar/ Brown sugar ¼- ½ teaspoon salt

Method: (You need a blender or food processor, mortar – pestle, board – stone) 1. Cut the chicken into bite size portions 2. Peel and chop all the opor paste ingredients (except the Lemon grass) and place into blender 3. Rub the paste into the chicken then place the chicken in a saucepan or Wok and add the water and Lemon grass 4. Cook for about 15 – 20 minutes and stir 5. RECORD £4,200 RAISED BY GARDENS OPEN EVENT in aid of WIMBORNE IN BLOOM Around 750 visitors enjoyed 21 Wimborne gardens. This was a record amount for a single Wimborne in Bloom event, the total being boosted by Barclays Bank and their matched fundraising scheme which was given under their work in the community programme. “This was the first time we had organised a whole day event for the Open Gardens” said Anthony Oliver. “Visitor numbers were well up on previous years. Some ninety Ploughman’s Lunches were served at “Percy House” and teas were available at four of the Gardens open. This year there were six new gardens to visit with another couple reappearing after a year or so absence. We had many favourable comments about the different gardens”. Wimborne is where the wild things are this summer, with Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Wild about Wimborne! coming to town on 24th July. A free event with lots of wildlife fun for families, this is a chance to discover the wildlife that’s living in this historic market town. Wildlife and wildlife gardening experts will Poppy Bessant and Zoe Sherwood go wild with be on hand for all those questions you forgot to send in to Springwatch. Dorset Wildlife Dorset Wildlife Trust last summer (photo: Nicky Hoar) Trust will be joined by other wildlife groups and there will be lots of activities and crafts for children. Special events include storytelling, music and art, with a giant crayfish to be constructed by artists from Wimborne’s Walford Mill Crafts and dragonflies being made by Anna Lewington, using reeds from the River Stour. Amanda Broom, People and Wildlife Officer at Dorset Wildlife Trust, is co-ordinating the day. She said: “We chose Wimborne because it is a real wildlife town, with two wonderful rivers. The Stour we all know and love, but did you know the Allen is one of the top rivers in Dorset for wildlife, with native white-clawed crayfish and water voles to its name? Come and discover your local wildlife – you might be surprised.” Wild about Wimborne! is on Saturday 24th July from 10.30am to 3.30pm in the centre of town on the Minster Green. No need to book. Tables top it for Rotary A donation to St Leonard’s Community Hospital has pushed the total distributed to worthy causes by Ferndown Rotary this year to more than £10,000. And this without the proceeds from June’s charity golf day that it is on target for a further £5000 ! Speaking at St Leonard’s, Ferndown Rotary President Geoff Lawrence said: “That we have been able to distribute £10,000 to good causes is brilliant. Most has gone to local organisations such as St Leonard’s that now has six more overbed tables to make life that little bit easier for patients. I love bluebells, but I was sad to see that the photo on your June cover is not of an English bluebell, but a Spanish bluebell, which is very different, having a paler colour, stouter straight stem, with flowers growing all around it, rather than mostly on one side, larger and broader leaves, and worst of all, no wonderful scent. These Spanish bluebells were introduced to gardens here and have now spread into the wild. Probably having stronger genes than the English one, they may wipe it out, which would be a terrible pity. Try a walk in an English bluebell wood, especially in the evening when the scent is strongest - it is incomparable! Dorset’s ancient trees
Veteran and ancient trees are of significant cultural, historical and ecological value. They are not alwayss instantly recognisable, but there are guiding principles: they are trees of biological, aesthetic or cultural interest because of their age, size and condition in the ancient stage of their lives or are old relative to others of the same species. Veteran trees are mostly found in traditional woodland, wood pastures, commons and parkland.

Ancient trees’ hollow nooks, decayed wood and bare surfaces make them unique wildlife habitats for thousands of plant and animal species, some of which are rare or endangered. They are home to a range of fungi, beetles and moss, as well as roosting bats, owls and woodpeckers. The size of the girth is the first indication when determining whether a tree is a ancient. Different trees have varying minimum requirements; oak species for instance need to measure up Wyndham’s Oak, Silton, N Dorset (Emma Brawn) to at least 5.5 centimetres. Indications of age can be found in all parts of the tree, though, and girth is not the only defining factor. To determine a veteran tree, also look at features such as hollowing, large tears and scars.

Sunset is usually more popular as most people are not out and about at dawn. The quality of the light is very different at sunrise to that at sunset. Being there is the most important challenge.

Be aware of locations that will give an interesting foreground. Sunrise - the big problem is planning for a location, checking for suitable weather conditions and getting to there in time. Even then the picturesque sunrise may not happen
Exposure is a technical consideration, particularly if there is a lot of foreground and silhouetted shapes. All cameras average image tones to mid grey which can result in overexposed images. On your digital camera there is a ‘±’ button. This allows you to over-ride the auto exposure to increase or decrease the exposure. With sunsets you will find using the ‘ – ‘ to underexpose the image will get better results. You will need to experiment with each subject, sometimes ‘-1’ is best, and at others ‘-2’. Subjects can be landscapes through seascapes to urban scenes. Instead of just photographing a portrait of the sky, why not try to include a foreground shape in silhouette. Water can be very useful to include reflections. The wintry sunset in Christchurch Harbour also has a bird flying towards the sun. This adds symbolism and needs a bit more planning and patience to wait for a bird to be in a suitable position in the frame. You will probably also need to take several pictures to be sure of getting one just where you want it. Roger Allen
