Waitrose opens

The wait is over for Waitrose - but what about the Wimborne BID? As Waitrose opened and shoppers flocked into Wimborne to see what the store was like, local businessmen were busy putting together the county’s second Business Improvement District to revive the town’s fortunes. Put simply, a BID is an independent partnership of local business Store Manager Ian Burdekin owners and local organisations that work together to define and with pupils from St John’s School deliver additional services and projects that will be of benefit to Wimborne, who performed the local businesses and will in turn help to improve trading activities official opening of Waitrose in the defined area. There are 85 BIDs in England, the nearest being Dorchester and Wimborne is looking to follow best practice and established procedures to put its own BID together. Groups of business people have been engaged to establish an action plan that will be put together in a costed and detailed proposal that will be put to the business community to vote on. After that Wimborne’s BID will need to be approved by the government. Once approved the BID will raise funds by a levy of around 1.5% of the rateable value of each business and spend the money in the ways agreed in the business plan. The group of businessmen leading the BID come from the Chamber of Trade and local businesses: Malcolm Angel, Martin Tidd, Paul Thomas and Chris Slocock, all are passionate about Wimborne and its future success – visit www.wimbornebid.org for more information and please, find out how you can support the Wimborne BID.

Dear Readers

Out & About 8 Harbour Wildlife 22

We are delighted this month to be including an article on the National Trust and the very successful Kingston Lacy House – centre pages – find a copy (Wimborne Tourism Office) and check out their events programme, printed by The Minster Press, for a very wide range of activities.

We are also equally pleased to be featuring PCs made simple, a growing computer support company that has just expanded into a new shop. If you have a problem with your PC or laptop, Clifford and Vicki are the people to ring – fair, honest support – just the kind of business we like to publicise and are delighted to see grow.

Main Cover photo: Roger Allen

Our World Cup competitions were very well received and the first winners are delighted to hear of their successes. Remember we want to hear from you about your successes, anniversaries and events so we can give your business or community event excellent publicity. We continue to grow our publications and by the time you read this we will have completed a Wall Chart - Events Planner - for Wimborne Town Football Club - featuring their fixtures for 12 months in a Calendar, running from August to July next year, thanks to everyone who supported that publication. We will also be expanding our successful Mini Directories into West Moors Three Legged Cross and Ferndown - these are delivered like all our magazines door to door – a minimum of 10,000 Mini Directories at a time to any one area – if you would like more information please contact us – we can design, produce and deliver leaflets to promote any business or community activity! Also visit us at www.districtdirectory.biz and remember we deliver, on a scale others only dream of - Door to Door - to reach an audience of up to 100,000 a month.

The theme of the Adult and Schools Competitions for Art and Poetry was “Wimborne’s Changing Beauty”. Wimborne in Bloom thank the schools for their ongoing support, Infinergy Ltd, a Wimborne-based wind farm company, who

The winners, with Richard Nunn, Wimborne in Bloom Committee Member (right) who organised the Competitions, and Anthony Oliver, Chairman of Wimborne in Bloom.

sponsored the Under 16’s Art Competition, and Mrs Pam Perry who again kindly sponsored the Poetry Competition. Wimborne in Bloom welcomed Frances Shearing, an eminent artist and teacher, who undertook the judging of the adult art competition and gave some very encouraging and informative feedback.

Poole Harbour Wildlife

22

Poole harbour, renowned for its natural beauty and for being the second largest natural harbour in the world, is a haven for a vast variety of wildlife. It is recognised as having national and international importance for wildlife conservation and borders several nature reserves. The harbour’s diverse undeveloped and extensive habitats of saltmarsh, reedbed, mudflats and heathland make it ideal for many species to flourish in, including reptiles as well as uncommon plants and invertebrates. Four rivers run into Sandwich tern and chick on Brownsea Island the Harbour, the River Frome being the largest and flowing from Photo:Phyl England, courtesy of Dorset Wildlife Trust the west. A birdwatcher’s dream, the Harbour provides a perfect winter shelter for tens of thousands of migrant birds with its unpolluted shallow water, rich food sources and mild temperatures. Flocks of waders, such as avocets and black tailed godwits, can be seen throughout the winter months. In the summertime, it is a breeding ground for shelducks, common and sandwich terns and several gull species, including Mediterranean gulls, while ospreys, the magnificent fish-eating birds of prey, are frequent visitors on migration and can be seen any time from now until November. There are five large islands in the Harbour, Brownsea Island with its sheltered lagoon and thriving red squirrel and Sika deer population being the best known. The squirrels are best spotted in the autumn in the pine woodland area, and the deer make their appearance in the early hours of the day, when there are few people around. Other mammals include water vole and otter and hundreds of different butterflies and moths also make the harbour their home. Poole Harbour is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protected Area (SPA). For what to look out for this month, see www.dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk/things-to-do.html. Niina Silvennoinen Coming up: Saturday 28th August 9am – 9pm, Dorset’s first BioBlitz in Corfe Mullen. Join Dorset Wildlife Trust to find as much wildlife as we can in one day in the varied habitats of Corfe Mullen. To join in email jane@naturewatched.org or ring Dorset Wildlife Trust on 01202 692033

Kingston Lacy

24

Set in acres of parkland and gardens, this National Trust property tells the story of a great Dorset family, from their loss of Corfe Castle in the Civil War to their glory days in the long summer of the British Empire. Kingston Lacy lies at the heart of a huge, working estate, which includes the ancient hill fort of Badbury Rings and the charming villages of Shapwick and Pamphill, criss-crossed by over seventy miles of footpath and bridleways. Events throughout the year include farmers’ markets, an Edwardian Sportsday, tree climbing days, guided walks, car rallies, children’s craft days and a chance to see the original Kitchen Gardens being lovingly restored and re-planted after a half century of neglect. Entry through the main gates is on the B3082 just two miles outside Wimborne.

The height of summer!

The roses are over and now the perennials reign supreme. The beds are ablaze with colour, particularly from those good old-fashioned stalwarts the dahlias and hemerocallis, the crocosmia and, my plant of the moment, dieramas = Angel’s Fishing Rods. They look so delicate but their gracefully arching stems are so strong, they wave about in the wind but never break. I failed to overwinter the potted cannas I had tucked away (I was told not to let them dry out completely, so I did!), but, in spite of the frosts and cold of the winter, the ones left in the ground are slowly coming to. We are fortunate to live in such a very mild area, although leaving such plants as dahlias and cannas in the ground only succeeds in a very free-draining soil, they will rot in moisture-retentive clay. But, of course, in a very free-draining soil, keeping sufficient nutrients for such plants is a problem – you can’t win. My vegetable patch is rubbish though – my excuse is constant absences. I have just visited Hinton Ampner’s walled vegetable garden and how I covet those neat rows of beans, beetroot, carrots and spinach. There is a famous vegetable garden at the Chateau of Villandry in France – the pinnacle of perfection, beautifully designed in form and colour, but then nothing is ever picked for food. Anyway, the summer is fleeting, get out and enjoy other people’s gardens – the winter comes all too soon. Barbara Gooch.

Plain Boiled and Steamed Rice ala Yayu Ingredients:

2 cups long grain rice 2 1/2 cups water

Method: Wash the rice twice under cold tap water and drain. Place in a saucepan and add 2 1/2 cups of cold water. Bring the rice to the boil stirring twice to keep the rice from sticking to the sides of the pan. Simmer until all the water has been absorbed. Cover the saucepan and lower heat. Then cook for a further 15 minutes.

32

Steamer method (ingredients as above)

Boil the rice until all the water has been absorbed. Remove from the heat. Put 3-4cm of water in the rice steamer and cover. Steam the rice for a further 10-15 minutes.

Note: The rice should now be quite soft and ready to eat, if you rub a grain between your finger and thumb you should not find a hard core. The rice will, of course, be slightly moist, but each grain should be quite separate from the others, even though they will tend to cling together.

Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice Indonesian Style) ala Yayu Ingredients:

2 cups long grain rice 2 1/2 cups water 4 shallots or 1/4 medium sized onion 2 cloves garlic 2 red chillies 1/2 tspn shrimp paste 2-3 tbspn sweet soy sauce 1 whisked egg 1 chicken breast (boil in 1 cup of water and add 1/4 tspn of salt, when cooked dice) 150g king prawns 1 tbspn sesame oil 1/2 tspn vegetable oil (Margarine or butter can be used instead of oil) 1/2 tspn salt.

Photograph by Ferry Zulfrizer Design Editor Heni Pridia © Yayu Slocock

Note: For Yayu’s Nasi Goreng all shallots and onions should be peeled, sliced and fried and then ground into a paste. Method:

Cook rice in the usual way and leave until cool.

Grind the garlic, shallots, chillies, salt and shrimp paste.

Add to the diced chicken and fry for 1 minute.

Add the rice and mix and fry well.

Add the egg, prawns and sweet soy sauce and cook for a further 5-8 minutes.

Serve in a large dish, generously garnished with sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, fried shallots and prawn crackers. Recipe by Yayu Slocock © All rights reserved To advertise ring Chris Peters at The Advertising Hub on 01202 829847

In our community New Recruits to Woofability! Woofability trains Assistance Dogs for local people in wheelchairs to give them a far better quality of life. They are taught to do many things like emptying the washing machine, picking up the post and helping with dressing and undressing. Not only do they give a person more independence they are a great pal and also a wonderful way to open a conversation with a complete stranger! People tend to talk over one’s head to a carer rather than a person in a wheelchair and so what a difference a dog can make.

Wimborne In Bloom..... hectic times! One of the most hectic times of the year has just been completed by all those involved with Wimborne in Bloom. Some 80 ‘wombles’, as they are affectionately known, turned out on 3 days to Litter Pick the Town ahead of the Towns Judging. In excess of 60 bags of rubbish was collected including a large quantity of bottles and glasses from the River! The local Wimborne in Bloom Competition had 129 entries across 17 different categories. They were judged by 15 local organisations. The results will be announced shortly. On 15th July the Town was judged in the Regional South and South East in Bloom Competition, Small Some of the 80 litter pickers who turned up to help Town Category. Two judges, Kelvin Mason and Mick Gore spent two hours scrutinizing the Town. They visited St. John’s School where pupils showed them their ECO work, vegetable plants, fence art etc., they walked along the riverside and through the new ‘Waitrose Park, called in at the Model Town and Redcotts Recreation Ground, saw the floral displays outside the Town’s Public Houses and walked through the Town Centre before visiting the Minster and God’s Acre and finishing up at the Priest’s House Museum. Anthony Oliver, Chairman, Wimborne in Bloom said, “they gave nothing away; we shall not know how we have done until the results are announced in early September. What is for sure is that we could not have done any more. Committee Member John Hare-Brown and his team of helpers spent many hours in the lead up to judging weeding pavements and making sure there was no litter around including the ever menacing cigarette butts. Everywhere looked spic and span. It is just so frustrating that the public at large cannot use Town Mayor of Wimborne Minster and Secretary of Wimborne in Bloom Cllr. Terry Wheeler with on his right the litter bins provided. Even before the judges Kelvin Mason and on his left Mick Gore, South and South had left Town, but fortunately after the judging East in Bloom Judges, Mistress Denise, Wimborne Militia had been completed, there was litter flying around who helps in the Jubilee Garden together with Wimborne the Town Square…why? It is purely down to lack in Bloom Committee Members before Judging commenced. of pride in ones town, lack of consideration for To advertise ring Chris Peters at The Advertising Hub on 01202 829847

Walking along Ashley Road in Upper Parkstone there was something in the air that told you this was a special day for Parkstone’s premier shopping street. Maybe it was the glorious sight of Poole’s Town Crier in his colourful historic regalia. Maybe it was his stentorian tones ringing out accompanied by his tuneful bell as he called the people to witness that His Worshipful The Mayor was about to open another new shop in this thriving thoroughfare.

At noon precisely His Worship The Mayor, Councillor Chris Bulteel, accompanied by The Lady Mayoress and the Town Crier, cut the traditional ribbon and officially declared the new premises of PCs Made Simple at 312 Ashley Road, well and truly open. Addressing the group of friends and wellwishers who had gathered in support, His Worship commented on how encouraging it was to see more new businesses opening up in this area to boost the local economy. Clifford and Victoria Johnson, on their Info@simple-pcs.co.uk achievements so far and wished the new venture every success. All those present then went inside to see the tantalising array of PCs and computerrelated goodies on display and partake of champagne and light refreshments. A good many of the people there were in fact existing customers of PCs Made Simple’s maintenance and repair service and were eager to testify to Clifford’s apparently magic touch! Clifford himself was eager to emphasise the fact that whilst the new shop provides a base for the business and better workshop facilities, the same personal service continues. It just means that Victoria gets her house back! So, if your PC or laptop falls sick, ring 0845 257 8018, or pop it into the shop. The shop is also the place for JustWrapIt PC and laptop wrapping service too as well as sales of new and refurbished computers and all the bits and pieces that go with them! shutter speed to freeze movement as with the breaking wave, or a slow shutter speed to create blur in the moving part of the image as with the New Zealand waterfall. The results are often a personal preference, as some people don’t like the effect of blur in a photo. To achieve a fast shutter speed, use the action setting on the camera. It may be necessary to over-ride the auto ISO and put the ISO setting to a high number, particularly if the light level is not very high. If you have direct control of shutter then use this to set the highest speed possible. The shorter the exposure the more you can freeze the movement. To achieve a slow shutter speed do the opposite with the ISO. Set it as low as possible and the shutter speed as low as possible. Some cameras only have descriptive settings; so try the firework setting, as this will give a long exposure. Make sure the camera is well supported to avoid camera shake so that non-moving parts of the image remain sharp. As with all aspects of using a camera, decide what you want to achieve, then read the appropriate part of the instruction manual to find out how with your specific camera. others, lack of discipline and laziness. There are plenty of litter bins around, why cannot they be used! It would save Wimborne in Bloom Volunteers and Council Employees a lot of hard work”. The week culminated with the Cream Tea afternoon on 17th July. Around 80 people enjoyed sitting by the river behind the Rising Sun in East Street. Visitors included Alan and Beverley Frampton from Australia. Originally from Wimborne they emigrated in the 80’s and hadn’t been back for over 20 years. Beverley said, “she wanted to enjoy a cream tea and they were even more delighted when Alan picked one of his own tickets in the raffle”. The event raised over £330 towards Wimborne in Bloom’s Autumn Planting Programme. Anthony Oliver, on behalf of Wimborne in Bloom thanked everyone involved for their support, especially during this past week, as this had ensured the Town looked its very best. Our next event is the Annual Duck Race on Saturday 28th August.
