Hello from the District Directory, we hope you like the new look! As part of our expansion we will be featuring regular articles of interest from contributors on a range of subjects. Starting this month, we have included a new recipe feature from International food expert Yayu Slocock. p32
Main Cover photo: Roger Allen
Our now regular photographic feature, now on page 22 has also been well received. Also this month, we have started wise words from our Business ActionCOACH Charlie Haddon. p34 As the A-Z of business in the region, the Directory is full of useful information about Your Local Businesses and Trades and this month includes a feature on Test Inspect, an excellent local electrical firm celebrating their 5th Anniversary. p40 As your district directory we include plumbers, electricians, property maintenance experts, cleaners, accountants, conservatory blind specialists, computer experts, interior decorators, and many more trades too many to mention here. If there are any categories you do not find and would like to see them please let us know and we will do our best to include them. Also if you know of any anniversaries, good stories or events please let us know, as they could be included in our Out & About feature or appear in our Business features.

This month we also have a business entry World Cup centre page feature, 16 of the top teams with a prize of a free half page to the businesses entered, if their team wins - you might want to follow this and see who does win, and at the same time support your local businesses…… Our win free petrol competition has now been increased to £50 £25 petrol and £25 cash, so make sure you enter to have a chance to win. The District Directory is also available for viewing on line with our page turning technology and is very easy to view for a wider audience – we even have viewers in Australia.

The mysterious nightjar is back for the summer
20
A summer visitor to the UK, the nightjar migrates from its wintering grounds in Africa between April and May. It is an elusive nocturnal bird, mostly active at dusk and dawn, when it forages on the wing for moths and other large insects. It is an excellent flier, but its short legs are barely suitable for walking. On the ground it is vulnerable to predators such as foxes and adders, as well as human disturbance, dogs in particular. The nightjar’s mottled, grey brown plumage provides excellent camouflage and makes it difficult to spot during the day, and even at night-time it is most easily observed by listening to the male’s distinctive, churring song. The males sport white markings on the wings and tail. The female produces one or two broods a year, laying one to three eggs each time. The nightjar is typically a bird of lowland heathland, requiring extensive feeding and breeding ground, and has suffered from the loss of this important habitat. During the last century, its numbers and range were in drastic decline, but due to heathland restoration and concentrated efforts to protect and provide suitable habitat, there has been some recovery. The nightjar is, however, still threatened and protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. It can be seen throughout the UK, but Southern England remains one of its strongholds. Carpets of flowers also make good photos creating a solid mass of blue; try a high viewpoint. Consider including the surrounding environment e.g. trees to frame the subject. Light direction has a big influence. Take photos from different directions, with the sun behind you, to the side and in front of you. Look at the results and decide which you think is the most effective. Back lighting the subject particularly with young translucent tree leaves filtering the light can be very effective. Finally consider setting the camera for a long exposure by using a low ISO and setting to give maximum focus from foreground to background. Instead of using a support, hand hold. Deliberate camera shake can result in effective abstract images, best printed on textured art paper. Experiment and see what you get. Thanks to my wife for the illustrations this month. A powerful symbol of late spring, bluebells can make excellent subjects. Get in close with a macro setting on the camera to capture single flower heads or even single flowers. There are two requirements for this. Firstly, get down to the level of the subject, to give it status. Secondly, use a support for the camera to prevent camera shake. A tripod is not necessary as there are other options. A nearby log can be used, or a beanbag which is small, light in weight, can be home made and will mould to the shape of the ground and camera. Another suitable product is a ‘Gorilla Pod’, widely available at camera shops or on the Internet. This is a clever mini tripod with flexible legs which can be wrapped around any object giving firm support for the camera equipment.

Business to Business 34
Benefits of raising your prices now Q Is it possible to put my prices up in the current climate ? A The short answer is YES ! Many business owners have an innate fear of increasing prices however, thinking that they will lose sales and customers. So it’s worth considering the following: First, ask yourself this: How many customers are currently complaining about my prices ? Harry Beckwith, the business author, suggests that unless at least 10% of your customers are dissatisfied with your prices, then you’re too cheap ! And then think about this - who are the people who usually complain anyway ? Often it’s those who pay late, take up lots of your time and are generally awkward. I’d call these your ‘D’ grade customers. So why would you want to deal with them at all ? In many businesses, the 80:20 rule applies - that is, 20% of your customers make up 80% of your turnover, and probably your profit too These are the customers who are generally nice to deal with - your ‘A’ F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F F and ‘B’ grade customers. Rules to ease estate event fears in Wimborne
Whether you fancy the perfect place for reading the paper with your morning coffee, or a multi-level expansion to your living space that can adapt to both energetic entertaining and laying leisurely in the sun, Dart Build Decking have the experience and the imagination to make it happen.
Decking Specialists • Design & Installation Where Quality Counts
Fears of anti-social behaviour have been softened by strict limits on a Wimborne estate’s new licence. Despite 47 objections, Deans Court Estate will be able to hold two events for 1,000 people a year, plus four private functions. Under the ruling, owner Sir William Hanham can only sell alcohol until 11.30pm and provide late night refreshments until midnight. Speaking on Sir William’s behalf, Paul Causton said: “Activities, like the popular Feast of Dorset, are totally anodyne. Despite the family adopting a modern lifestyle, financial pressures are great.” Income from selling Wimborne cricket ground to John Lewis went to tax, he claimed. Robin Cook, speaking privately as a resident rather than in his role as a councillor, welcomed the scale-down. “This has focussed people’s minds on being more aware when applications appear on lampposts. If people had not acted, we may have had an open-ended licence, turning the estate into a major entertainment centre.” Sir William said: “We are delighted. For 35 years Deans Court has provided people with a magical escape from the hurly burly of every day life.”

Love your pet… love your vet
It’s official: CHIPS are good for pets! Our pets are part of the family and as such we all want to do everything we can to ensure they are kept safe. You have them regularly checked over at the vets and ensure their vaccinations are kept up-todate – but how well would you cope if your pet went missing? No matter how responsible you are or how well behaved your pet is it is possible that one day they may go missing. While collars can be slipped, name tags can fall off and tattoos may become illegible over time, microchip identification is permanent so if your pet is lost a microchip gives you the best chance of being reunited.
38
A microchip is hardly bigger than a grain of rice and having it implanted is quick and simple. Like a normal injection, it is inserted under the skin at the back of the neck and once there lasts a lifetime. The chip contains a unique code that identifies the pet and the owner. The details including your name, address and contact telephone numbers are held on a central database. Most vets, animal charities and local authorities have pet microchip readers. If your pet does unfortunately go missing, once found and handed in to the relevant authority, your pet will be scanned to ‘read’ the unique ID code to identify your pet. Your contact details will then be looked up on the database and then it’s simply a case of contacting you to return your pet to you. It is important to remember, that when moving house or changing your telephone number, you should inform your vet to ensure that the central database is up-dated so that the correct information is held. For all responsible pet owners having your pet micro-chipped should be one of the first things that you do – micro-chipping is as simple as having your pet vaccinated! Contact the practice to arrange an appointment. Karen Pearce BSc (Hons) BVSc (Hons) MRCVS is a Vet and Partner at Hillside Veterinary Centre in Corfe Mullen. Established by Director David Lamb, the business has grown mainly by word of mouth advertising to employ 4 people and gets involved in a wide range of jobs. “I started by knocking on doors of local businesses in January 2005”, explains David, whose main thrust at the time was to provide testing and inspecting of electrical installations and appliances (PAT Testing). “Letting agents and a wide variety of small local businesses, from offices to engineering firms took our service and have stayed with us ever since”, he continues. “In the meantime we listened to what our customers wanted and expanded into general repairs and maintenance, as well as installation work. We offer a good service and competitive pricing, meaning our customers call us first when something goes wrong. They also tell their friends and business acquaintances about us. You can’t ask for more than that!” Any electrical wiring deteriorates with age and use, so regular checks on it are important to maintain its safety. Testinspect carries out a lot of Periodic Inspection Reports, finding worn out sockets and switches and wiring which is

no longer safe to use. “The Electrical Safety Council has a lot of information for users” says David. “They issue guide-lines and no nonsense practical advice on what to do to keep yourself and your family, employees or tenants in rented properties, safe from harm. Look them up at www.esc.org.uk “. “Don’t get caught out by the rules and regs”, David advises. “Whilst there is no legal requirement to carry out electrical inspecting, (except in the case of a House in Multiple Occupation which has to be inspected every 5 years), there is a legal requirement that any electrical work done complies with the regulations in force when it is carried out and businesses and landlords in particular need to ensure that an installation is safe to use and maintained to be safe.” Businesses should also check the wording of their commercial insurance policy to avoid the shock (no pun intended!) of not being covered. “Give me a call if you are confused about what you can or can’t do”, urges David. DIY electrics are common-place, but you have to be competent to do the work yourself and domestic work often has to be tested and certificated as complying with Part P of the Building Regulations. David recalls helping one house-owner who was selling up and who didn’t have the right certificates for some electrics added in his bathroom. “We ended up doing all the work again for him so we could issue the right pieces of paper, otherwise the sale would have fallen through. It would have saved a lot of time,
money and stress if it had all been done properly in the first place.” Testinspect are Approved Contractors and Domestic Installers under the NICEIC schemes. David explains “This means we are inspected ourselves annually to ensure we are abiding by the current regulations and doing a quality job. It means we can offer a guarantee with our work and our customers get all the certificates and paperwork they need to be legal and to know the job has been done properly and that they can sleep safe at night.” What more could you ask for?

The Wimborne in Bloom Committee and their band of volunteers will be very grateful if all traders and residents will join them in their efforts to keep Wimborne looking clean and colourful throughout the year by spending a few moments each day to ensure that the outside of their premises is weed and litter free. A Litter Pick of the Town will take place the weekend before the judging. 160 hanging baskets have been ordered from Little Banks Nursery and will be erected throughout the Town centre in early June. This week our contractor, Heathlands Garden Services have planted up the flower towers in the Square and Cornmarket and around 80 or so half barrel planters around the town. They will maintain them throughout the summer. We need to fill every nook and cranny to ensure our town is a blaze of colour. With everyone’s help we can do it and it certainly makes for a better environment for residents and visitors alike.
