British scientists ‘invent artificial petrol’ that could cost just 90p per Gallon (and there’s no carbon) • Hydrogen-based fuel produces no greenhouse gases so could help nations slash their carbon footprint • It is due to be available at the pumps in three to five years Artificial petrol that costs 19p per litre could be on forecourts in as little as three years. British scientists are refining the recipe for a hydrogen-based fuel that will run in existing cars and engines at the fraction of the cost of conventional petrol. With hydrogen at its heart rather than carbon, it will not produce any harmful emissions when burnt, making it better for the environment, as well as easier on the wallet. The first road tests are due next year and, if all goes well, the cut-price ‘petrol’ could be on sale in three to five years. Professor Stephen Bennington, the project’s lead scientist, said: ‘In some senses, hydrogen is the perfect fuel. It has three times more energy than petrol per unit of weight, and when it burns, it produces nothing but water. “Our new hydrogen storage materials offer real potential for running cars, planes and other vehicles that currently use hydrocarbons.” Continued on page 43

As spring has truly arrived, the buzz, colour and bird song is something to be very cheerful about and one thing, for sure, the winter has not been a particularly cheerful time. I do not know if it is just me getting older and apparently as you get older you get grumpy, so I am told, but I am increasingly becoming of the view that I want to avoid the media and the news, particularly on the television. The news headlines seem to be repeated far too often, the emphasis of the news is distorted, exaggerated and extreme.

I said April was the month for daffodils – what do I know? Only my late flowering varieties made it into April, the others were all over by the end of March. Monty Don said Springs are getting earlier slowly but surely, which makes it very difficult for organisers of occasions like Tulip Festivals. Pashley Manor in Sussex holds such a festival and this year it’s the first week in May. They have 22,000 blooms, but will they still be in flower? I was amazed to see a few of my bluebells out in March. It’s usually mid May when I visit Kingston Lacey to be entranced and uplifted by the sight and smell of the intense blue carpet in the woods there. How lucky we are to live in Dorset! The garden visiting season is with us and there are plenty in the NGS Yellow Book – five in Wimborne alone. I love to visit villages when they open their gardens together, with the bonus of refreshments in the village hall and plant sales. The very best place to buy plants of course is the Spring Plant Sale on Saturday, 14th May at 2.30 p.m. in Colehill Memorial Hall – most of the plants are grown by Hardy Plant Society members so you can find unusual plants at bargain prices. Wild Woodland Flowers Many wild flowers are at the peak of their blossom in May, so it is the perfect time to take a walk in the woods and enjoy this colourful display.

The much-loved bluebell is for many people the essence of spring. Bluebells form a dazzling purple-blue carpet across ancient woodland, their bell shaped flowers appearing from late April to June. Bluebells can be a dominant species, covering most of the woodland ground, and they also grow in meadows and hedgerows.Although common and widespread, they have been in decline in recent years due to habitat loss and competition with the non-native Spanish Bluebell. The lesser celandine flowers earlier than the bluebells and ramsons, but is still around in May with its cheerful, buttercup-yellow flowers. It is an important early source of nectar and pollen for bumblebees and can make a cheerful yellow carpet through a wood in April. These and other woodland flowers such as the wood anemone create a spectacular display. Make sure not to miss it, as they mostly bloom for a short period only, before the tree canopies above fill in, blocking out the sunlight. Ingredients: 3 Chicken Breasts (approx 450 gsm) Butter or Olive Oil ½ a large onion 3 garlic cloves ½ teaspoon Cajon seasoning (add more if required to personal taste) 1 teaspoon Curry powder of choice (Madras Mild) (add more if required to personal taste) Salt and pepper to taste Mixed herbs ½ tin of Coconut milk or cream Tin of Plum Tomatoes or chopped 2 large carrots (sliced and diced into small pieces) Baby mushrooms (1 pack) Runner beans topped and tailed. Steamed Rice Poppadoms – You can buy ready made or cook your own in hot oil Plain Naans – Again you can buy ready made - or make your own fresh bread. (Tip: warm them in the oven after sprinkling a little cold water on top) Method Chop the chicken into suitable sized chunks and fry in butter or olive oil until cooked. Chop the onion into small pieces and fry until brown in butter or olive oil. Add the chicken to the onions and add crushed garlic, Curry Powder and Cajon seasoning stir, still frying add tomatoes. Add all the rest of the ingredients including enough water to make the sauce as required and mix on a low heat - Leaving to cook for at least half an hour.

In his book, “What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business charliehaddon@actioncoach.com School,” Mark McCormak made an interesting discovery about the 1979 graduating MBA class. Within the group, 3% had written goals, 13% had thought of some goals and the balance were just thrilled to be out of school ! The interesting part was what happened ten years later. Here are the results of their success after a decade: The group that had non-written goals were making TWICE in the field compared to the 84% of those who had no goals leaving Harvard. The group with written goals was making TEN TIMES what the other 97% were making on average. It seems likely that people at Harvard have a long history of knowing what they are doing. So if the top 3% were able to make TEN TIMES what everyone else was by simply writing out their goals, why aren’t you doing it? We are already through the hardest part of the ‘recession’, and yet people and businesses are still worried that our economic situation is dire. Resolutions made at the beginning of the year may be starting to fade - if they haven’t already. But who says making and keeping resolutions is just for the beginning of a year. Why wait? Make sure that one of the resolutions you set and keep right now is to make a strong plan for yourself and your business; ALL ANGLES PLUMBING ones with enough detail so that you can actually make progress FOR A SUPERIOR SERVICE against them on a consistent basis. A pair of Oriental small clawed otters have moved into the brand new enclosure and to mark their arrival, a variety of otter themed entertainment will take place. Oliver Buttling, Group Curator of the Oceanarium, said: “We’re really excited to welcome the otters to the Oceanarium. Framing the Subject
Last month I considered ideas for composition, lets now consider the overall shape within the frame. The psychology of shapes is well known and as we all react subconsciously in the same way to some shapes they are used constantly in advertising and design to give us subliminal messages. Have you noticed how often financial industry logos are based on the shape of a triangle? A triangle is a stable shape and cannot fall over. It is a symbol of stability.The church gable end at Tyneham village is an example. Use the idea with a group of people, even 1 person with careful arm placement can look very stable. We usually lie down to rest which is why a landscape format is referred to as a quiet horizontal and can be used to convey the idea of peace, quiet and relaxation. The River Stour at Christchurch is a landscape example. I f , h oweve r, you use movement blur in the image this shape can emphasize the concept of speed and action. A sense of drama can also be introduced by tilting the subject away from the horizontal or vertical. This is called a falling angle, illustrated here with the tree, but can also be used in action photos to add a sense of speed applied to a person, bike or car implying that it is moving quickly or it would fall over. We are vertical objects and humans consider themselves as dignified. Therefore a vertical frame with a vertical subject implies dignity. This can be applied to any subject. Viewpoint is also an influence here and will be dealt with next month. Happy shooting.

Distance: 6 miles. Difficulty: Medium. Access Restrictions: No. Information: Toilets in car park. How to get there: - Grid Ref 974777; Turn right just after Corfe Castle for Kingston. After Kingston, follow the road for about a mile and turn right for Worth Matravers. The car park is on your right just before the village. There is a small parking fee. Walk details: Turn right as you leave the car park, turn left around the base of the Square and Compass pub (100 metres) and proceed along the road for about ½ mile. On the right of the road, cross the stile with the finger post saying Priests Way. Cross the next two stiles and proceed across the fields, across 2 further stiles until you reach a track Follow this track for about ¼ mile and you will see a stile to your right signposted Seacombe and the Eastington National Trust area. Go over the stile and follow the path down the valley to Seacombe (do not follow the left fork to Dancing Ledge after the second stile). The path to Winspit is about 100 metres back from the cliffs on the right. Go over the stile into the woods, up through the woods and follow the coastal path to Winspit quarries (2/3 mile). As you drop down into Winspit, the path is not, as it seems, directly across the track into the base of the quarries. You need to turn right up the track for about 70 metres, then left up around the top of the quarry and onto the St Aldhelms/St Albans Head Coastguard’s station (2/3 mile). At Winspit you can also proceed directly up the track to Worth if you wish (1 mile, about 3 miles in total).
