TOP TIPS FOR HOME IMPROVEMENT Before starting any project make a realistic list of things that must be done and what you would like to achieve.

Prepare – Make sure that you have considered the impact of the project on your home and daily life. Set a budget – Be realistic do not take on more than you can handle. Always get in writing what costs the contractor will be charging for. Plan – Make a realistic plan of the timescale to completion. Take into account each stage of the project. Contractor or DIY? - Only take on projects that you can realistically handle and are equipped to do in order to avoid unnecessary costs and danger. Evaluate – Make sure if you have a contractor you evaluate their work at each stage and if you are not happy then discuss it with them.

21 Photo: Mike Lofthouse Blandford Museum Garden

What is going on....? . . . a June garden in May, full of roses, peonies and poppies – but so far this year I have seen no swallows in this area. I’m working on the patients’ garden at Victoria Hospital – there are 2 extremely fearless baby robins there, being fed both by their parents and by the staff! At home the tits are dashing in and out of the bird box, and the bats are back in the roof. And last week a red kite flew low overhead as I was erecting my bean-poles and gazing skywards, I was so excited I almost fell off the ladder. I have been cheating a little in the vegetable garden and buying in plug plants from the market. In just one afternoon I have beans, beetroot, sweetcorn, potatoes, tomatoes, leeks and, of course, lots of parsley. Job done! I am not very lucky with seeds, either too many come up, or very few, and at the end of the year most of them are still in their packets. For the small ‘potager’ or window box plug plants could work out cheaper. Barbara Gooch

Call 01202 770774 or 07979 052242 Back to the seas of our grandparents’ days Right now, a network of Marine Protected Areas is being developed around our shores, with protection from the most damaging activities such as gravel extraction and scallop dredging. Most types of fishing, commercial and recreational activity will still be allowed, but there will be some new marine reserves, called Reference Areas, which will be protected from ALL damaging activities, giving them a chance to return to the rich seas of our grandparents’ days. These highly protected Reference Areas are vital to the success of the network as a whole. They allow wildlife within them to return to a near-natural state, acting as benchmarks for understanding how human activities affect marine life, showing us what a healthy and undamaged sea is like – something we can hardly imagine at the moment. Older Dorset residents remember seeing schools of harbour porpoise and catching large angel shark and common skate, both of which are now critically endangered. We hope that by setting aside some areas of the sea purely for wildlife we will see a return to the marine environment our great-grandparents enjoyed. Photo: Richard Yorke The Reference Areas will undoubtedly affect some people who use the sea for their living or recreation and tough decisions will be needed. But if we do nothing, no-one will benefit, least of all our local Dorset fishing communities. To find out more visit www. wildlifetrusts.org and click on Living Seas. Look out for the Petition Fish campaign this summer at Dorset Wildlife Trust centres and events and sign a scale to show your support for marine wildlife. ‘SILVER’ at Walford Mill Crafts 25th June – 31st July

Walford Mill Crafts celebrate their 25th Anniversary with an auction fundraising exhibition called SILVER. Over 75 local and national makers have donated work, including wood, metal, mixed media, printmaking, clothing, weaving, textiles, jewellery and ceramics for this exhibition. A silent auction will be on-going during the exhibition where visitors will be able to ‘bid’ for all displayed items up until 28th July. Artists such as on-site makers Debby Kirby (silk weaver) and Kathryn Arbon (silversmith & jewellery artist) have contributed one-off pieces especially made for the occasion. The exhibition, which is free to enter, hopes to raise over £5,000 towards a new entrance bridge into the Walford Mill Crafts site that will significantly improve access and safety to visitors. ‘The Great Rinsing’ – Wimborne Theatre Group at Wimborne’s Pump House Wimborne Community Theatre (WCT) presents ‘The Great Rinsing’, a site-specific multi-media performance set in and around Wimborne’s atmospheric Pump House, a Victorian industrial building not usually open to the public, owned by Sembcorp Bournemouth Water. The show, written and directed by Jonathan Petherbridge, of London Bubble was devised by members of WCT and students from Allenbourn School, QE, Oakmead College and Arts University College at Bournemouth working with professional artists. Two children search the chasms and passageways of a derelict museum of water to quench their thirst, and lead the audience on a quest to find the cause of the Great Rinsing. The Great Rinsing marks WCT’s twenty anniversary developing communitybased theatre in specific locations in East Dorset. Bring out the barbie!

With Fathers Day this month and hopefully some sunshine, June is a good month for get together and relaxed entertaining. This recipe is a great way to barbecue a leg of lamb, just asks the guys at Oakley Butchers to butterfly it which means taking the bone out and opening up the meat, this decreases cooking time and makes carving easy. The maple syrup is a perfect partner for the lamb and won’t fail to impress your guests. Keep it simple; serve with new potatoes tossed in minted butter, a mixed leaf salad dressed with olive oil and lemon juice and perhaps some cherry tomatoes roasted on the vine. It’s important to rest the lamb for 10 mins before carving; this gives the meat a chance to absorb all the juices and flavours. So fire up the Barbie and get cooking!

Barbecued Maple Syrup Lamb

32

Ingredients Leg of lamb butterflied approx. 5 ½lb - 2 ½ kg (will feed 6 to 8 people) 2 cloves garlic cut into thin slivers 2 sprigs fresh rosemary Salt and pepper

For the marinade 100 ml olive oil 75 ml sweet sherry 2 tbl spns maple syrup {Plus extra to brush on} 1 tbl spn balsamic vinegar Juice of 1 lemon

Method 1. Make small incisions all over the lamb with a sharp knife. 2. Poke a sliver of garlic then a small sprig of rosemary into the holes. 3. Mix together the marinade ingredients 4. Place lamb into a shallow container, season all over and cover with the marinade ensuring the meat is well covered. Cover with cling film and place in the fridge for a minimum of two hours or overnight for more flavour, turning occasionally. 5. When ready to cook bring the lamb back to room temperature and get the barbie nice and hot. 6. Place on the hottest part for 5 mins each side to sear the meat, and then move slightly away to cook more slowly basting with the marinade and turning frequently. Cook for approx 25 to 30 mins for pink, longer if you want it more well done. About 10 mins before the end start to brush with the extra maple syrup, the meat will go quite dark and will start to char, this all adds to the flavour. 7. Allow the meat to rest for 10 mins so if a little underdone don’t worry as it will continue to cook while resting. Ideally the outside will be charred and the inside pink. 8. Carve into thin slices and pour over any juices. If you want to roast some vine tomatoes simply crush a garlic clove with some salt and mix with olive oil, toss the tomatoes leaving on the vine, and either cook in a hot oven or put on the bbq until they start to blister.

Business to Business Building Successes - Together Putting the “I” back in alliances

01202 870196 charliehaddon@actioncoach.com

Strategic partnerships yield great benefits for those involved but they are also fragile entities. To ensure success, remember these ten I’s when forging alliances with other organisations: Importance: The relationship must matter strategically to both sides. Independence: Both sides bring strengths and neither can be expected to prop up the other. Information: Transparency strengthens the partnership; hiding information impedes trust. Innovation: Two minds are always better than one.

34

Inspiration: Find new ways of doing of doing things together Institutionalisation: A formal structure can aid objectivity and ensure the partnership works for both sides. Integration: Create several points of contact across the organisations. Integrity: Trust is critical and ethics are a must. Interdependence:You need to need each other. Investment: Have a stake in the partner’s success. Chris Slocock

Photography

Viewpoint

There are two aspects to this part of composition. One is moving around the subject The other is viewpoint, using a high or low viewpoint or shooting at the same level as the subject. Moving around the subject can produce a variety of images of the subject and affect the light, shadows and background illustrated here with 2 views in the centre of Christchurch NZ before the earthquake. The mood of the image can also change. The two images of reeds were taken a minute apart, one with the sun behind me, the other with the sun behind the reeds. ‘You have legs, use them’ is very useful advice, I have been told when running personalized small group photography courses. Moving nearer or further away or walking around the subject is a great way to obtain a variety of images. Photographing from the same level as the subject gives it status, dignity and respect. (below). Looking down can belittle the subject as with the 6ft man with the rubber boats. The skier, however, shows how you can remove unwanted background by using a high viewpoint. Looking up from a low viewpoint can produce different and dramatic images as illustrated by the image of the trees. The overall message here is think viewpoint before you shoot.

Help the birds this Spring and Summer! Feeding birds in the garden is a popular activity - over half of adults in the UK feed birds in their garden. That’s a lot of extra help for the birds! Providing birds with supplementary food will bring them closer for you to marvel at their fascinating behaviour and wonderful colours. It will also reward them for sharing their lives with you. Feeding birds is also an ideal way to enthuse children about wildlife. By feeding the birds year round, you’ll give them a better chance to survive the periods of food shortage whenever they may occur. Only feed selected foods at this time of year. Good hygiene is vital, or feeding may do more harm than good. During the summer months,

birds require high protein foods, especially while they are moulting. Black sunflower seeds are a great for the birds at this time of year. Black sunflower seed can be purchased on its own or in a mix with other great essentials. Our best selling bird food is the 20kg Wild Bird Food at just £11.99! (£0.59p/kg)! (also available in smaller quantities from 1kg up to 20kg) – Delivered direct to your door for FREE the same day or next! A huge range of bird seed is available from PetzRus at fantastic prices, delivered FREE! To find out more or to place an order – visit www.PetzRus.co.uk or call 01202 840234. Ian Hulbert, PetzRus

Jurassic Jaunts - continued... Turn right for Kingston just after Corfe Castle village. Follow the winding road up towards the top until you reach the Scott Arms on your right. Turn right carefully at the 90 degree left hand bend and follow the road for about a mile and park in the small car park on the left. Walk details: From the end of the car park, turn left between the 2 large gateposts, the entrance to Encombe House then right after about 20 metres. Follow the track, then path up to Swyre Head (¾ mile). On the left will be the ‘Encombe Bowl’, in which lies Encombe House and lake. In the distance on the left you will see St Aldhelm’s/St Albans Head. At Swyre Head, the land falls steeply away down to the coast. Turn sharp right, past the Trig Point and go through a gate in the wall. Go through the gate to meet another gate called ‘Heaven’s Gate’ (1/3 mile). Turn right here through the large gate and along the grassy track to meet the hard-core track. Stay right and follow the track back to the car park (1 mile). © Jurassic Jaunts AP 2010. www.jurassicjaunts.co.uk info@jurassicjaunts.co.uk 07790 474 478 The ONLY Total Jurassic Experience Specialists - Guided walks, free information and advice plus Holiday planning services. Tigers could roam once more in Central Asia WWF applauds government of Kazakhstan on innovative effort to reintroduce tigers where they were previously extinct Tigers could once again inhabit Central Asia under a new plan by the Kazakhstan government to reintroduce them in part of the country where the species went extinct decades ago.World Wildlife Fund (WWF), together with the government and experts of the Republic of Kazakhstan, announced recently a new program to return tigers to the region. The plan seeks to relocate Amur tigers from the Russian Far East to suitable habitat in Kazakhstan near the delta of the Ili River. Tigers numbered more than 100,000 at the turn of the 20th century. Habitat loss and illegal wildlife trade has resulted in as few as 3,200 wild tigers today. They occupy a mere 7 percent of their historic range and are scattered across 13 countries, including Russia. Property Antioxidant Screening OPEN DAY on SATURDAY 18TH June

Call us for more information or to book a 30 Minute Individual Screening

We are excited to announce a new Antioxidant Screening Programme as part of the services we offer to address your overall healthcare. Knowing your antioxidant level is as important as knowing your cholesterol levels, or your blood pressure. Current medical literature suggests that antioxidants can decrease your risk of cancer, heart disease, and complications related to diabetes. Antioxidants can slow down the ageing process, boost your immune system, and speed recovery times while decreasing pain and inflammation. Since most people do not eat 9-13 servings of fruits and vegetables daily, it is now recommended that we take a supplement that can provide optimal nutritional support and effectively raise your overall antioxidant level. Best wishes, David Allen F

Continued from page 3 space is extraordinarily expensive, yet there’s no law of physics that says it has to be that way,’ he said. ’We just need to prove it’s viable.’ Its developers say it could one day replace Nasa’s Space Shuttle to transport up to 12 tonnes of cargo and astronauts to the International Space Station. The Skylon’s innovative engine uses propulsion to reach the edge of the Earth’s atmosphere before switching to rocket power to get into orbit. The first phase of the engines uses air from the atmosphere to be cooled before being compressed into the engine and burned with hydrogen.

The story of Harley Davidson 1901 until today: Part 1

1901 - William S. Harley, age 21, completes a blueprint drawing of an engine designed to fit into a bicycle. 1903 - William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson make available to the public the first production Harley-Davidson® motorcycle. The bike was built to be a racer, with a 3-1/8 inch bore and 3-1/2 inch stroke. The factory in which they worked was a 10 x 15-foot wooden shed with the words “Harley-Davidson Motor Company” crudely scrawled on the door.Arthur’s brother Walter later joins their efforts. Henry Meyer of Milwaukee, a schoolyard pal of William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson, buys one of the 1903 models directly from the founders. 1904 - The first Harley-Davidson Dealer, C.H. Lang of Chicago, IL, opens for business and sells one of the first three production Harley-Davidson motorcycles ever made. 1905 - On July 4th, an H-D motorcycle wins a 15 mile race in Chicago with a time of 19:02. In Milwaukee, the first full-time employee is hired.
