WHAT’S YOUR WHY? CIRCLE of GIVING ISSUE 4 // SUMMER 2022 OFFICE of PHILANTHROPY 2021 REPORT of GIFTS

As I reflect on the past year, I am truly humbled by the love, compassion, generosity and time our family of caregivers, donors, friends, patients, neighbors and volunteers have shared with ChristianaCare and the Office of Philanthropy.

These incredible acts and gifts of kindness embrace our shared commitment to make world-class health care available to the communities we serve, have fostered new and holistic approaches to delivering health care, and highlight the significant progress that has been made toward our strategic priorities: Innovation and Technology, Exceptional Care, Best People and Health Equity.

It has been a heartwarming and rewarding experience to see what our caregivers and supporters have achieved, collectively and individually, when they coalesced around one simple concept: let’s take care of our neighbors.

It is my hope that as you read the stories about love and excellence in action throughout our publication, you too will be inspired to join our Circle of Giving and help us build stronger and healthier communities.

P.S. You may be wondering what the Office of Philanthropy is — it’s us! The Office of Development has a new name (same address, same mission!), and we’re excited to introduce it here.

Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation puts teal to work against ovarian cancer

In 2003, Dorianne Short was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The experience inspired her to help other women facing the disease, which affects one in 78 woman nationally according to the American Cancer Society and is one of the deadliest gynecologic cancers. In 2009, Short founded the Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation to raise awareness and build a supportive community for women living with ovarian cancer. Through fundraising events like its annual Teal Ribbon 5K Run-Walk, the volunteer-run foundation has become a regular community partner to ChristianaCare’s Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute.

In 2016, the foundation established the Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation Research Initiative to support ovarian cancer research. The biggest successes in discovering new cancer biomarkers and identifying potential targets for future treatments stem from scientists’ ability to work directly with tumor tissues. The initiative has helped create a tumor tissue bank where Graham Cancer Center patients can voluntarily donate their tumors for research.

Thanks to the foundation’s ongoing support — totaling $300,000 — scientists at the Graham Cancer Center and their colleagues at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia have access to an ever-increasing repository of tumor tissue banked straight from local operating rooms. They’re able to investigate new treatments that may soon provide much-needed hope for women facing ovarian cancer.

“It is a big satisfaction that there is research happening right here in Delaware. New treatments are being developed and there is hope. Making a difference doesn’t happen overnight, but when women come together to support one another — and when we partner with the medical community — change does happen!”

Feeling creative? Host a special event to support ChristianaCare! Do you have a fundraising idea that your friends and family would enjoy? Partner with ChristianaCare to make it a success. Contact Elizabeth Dougherty, Elizabeth.Dougherty@ChristianaCare.org, to get started.

THE CAMPAIGN FOR SECURING TOMORROW

WE DID IT TOGETHER

Campaign for Securing Tomorrow reaches its goal

“The Junior Board’s mission is to serve ChristianaCare patients and their families with volunteer efforts and financial support. We were proud to commit financially to the Campaign as our part in helping to achieve new and innovative levels of care that will serve our neighbors long after the pandemic is over.”

ChristianaCare has successfully closed our Campaign for Securing Tomorrow, raising $1 million to advance the health system’s transformation of care delivery. Propelled by a $500,000 gift from the Junior Board of ChristianaCare — the lead sponsor of the campaign — the Campaign for Securing Tomorrow honored the health system’s heroic and radical transformation during the initial three-week period of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Unrestricted funds raised through the Campaign have enabled ChristianaCare to expand telehealth and promote health equity, broaden innovation, strengthen specialized care and train caregivers in new technologies to deliver care in innovative ways.

Donna Williams is

MARK’S

Donna Williams loved life. The retired nurse was a loyal Eagles and Phillies fan and was always up for long walks on the beach and swims in her pool. Above all, she adored her husband, Mark, children Bradley and Megan and “granddog” Josie.

“Donna was an incredible person. I always feel bad for people who never met her — they really missed out,” said Mark. “She was warm, funny, empathetic and no nonsense. She approached life head on, even after her cancer diagnosis.”

In 2017, Donna’s primary care provider found a heart murmur and referred her for testing. Cardiac specialists and surgeons found and removed a tumor on her heart. Collaborating with oncologists at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute, they identified it as a rare and aggressive form of cardiac cancer.

“We spent the next three years in and out of the Graham Cancer Center for treatments,” said Mark. “Every caregiver — from the physicians and nurses to the technicians to the escorts who wheeled her in and out of the center — became family. They treated Donna with respect and compassion, using every

WHY

innovation to give her more time and better quality of life during the time we did have. And they made sure I was okay and comfortable when I was there and had support when I wasn’t.”

After Donna died in June 2020, Mark wanted to do something for the people who did so much for his family. “Whenever we walked into the center on the way to an appointment, we’d read the bricks on the ground leading up to the building. Donna was always more curious and concerned about these people than she was herself,” he said.

Mark donated to add two bricks in Donna’s name. He also participated in the recent Friends of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute 5K Run/Walk for the Lung, raising additional funds.

“Donna’s caregivers are some of the most dedicated, wonderful people you ever have the opportunity to meet,” said Mark. “It’s an honor to thank them with funds that will also help the Graham Cancer Center care for other patients.”

pillars of fo

Across our region, hundreds of thousands of people trust ChristianaCare to serve them with love and excellence. We uplift them in four pillar areas — Innovation and Technology, Exceptional Care, Best People and Health Equity — and our generous supporters help us in unique ways.

INNOVATION & TECHNOLOGY A PATHWAY TO STEM

A global leader in CRISPR-directed gene editing technology, ChristianaCare’s Gene Editing Institute (GEI) is the only one of its kind based in a community health system. GEI’s two bold goals are to accelerate innovation and make CRISPR technology, which is used for next generation medical therapies and diagnostics, more accessible to all.

Four recent gifts propelled the goals forward. The Lisa Dean Moseley Foundation made a $1 million grant to GEI to develop a novel gene therapy for inherited blood disorders, including sickle cell disease. The foundation also gave a $1.7 million grant to GEI and the Cawley Center for Translational Cancer Research at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute to research the first in-human use of CRISPR gene editing technology for esophageal solid tumors and cancer stem cells. Additionally, a $50,000 grant from Highmark and a $20,000 grant from the Arsht-Cannon Fund have individually supported GEI’s Outreach and Education Program, which teaches high school and college students about CRISPR and opens a path to careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).

BEST PEOPLE & EXCEPTIONAL CARE BIG HEARTS FOR HEALTHY HEARTS

ChristianaCare’s Center for Heart & Vascular Health is among the largest, most capable regional heart centers on the East Coast, thanks in part to its highly trained and profoundly compassionate caregivers.

To tackle advanced heart failure, a far too common condition affecting 6 million Americans, the Center for Heart & Vascular Health is strengthening its caregiver team with a new Heart Failure Fellowship Program. When fully funded, the $2.5 million endowed fellowship will support one fellow annually, bringing much-needed exceptional advanced heart failure care to Delaware. To date, the fellowship has received $1 million from ChristianaCare and a total of $250,000 from seven individual donors

HEALTH EQUITY LOVE ON THE ROAD

ChristianaCare’s love of health and our neighbors extends beyond our campuses. We have a long history of partnering with communities on innovative and evidence-based approaches to bring health care and wellness services to people who historically faced barriers to care.

A $1 million grant from Barclays, the transatlantic consumer and wholesale bank, has turbocharged our community care. Two ChristianaCare Mobile Health Services vans supported by Barclays — health care on wheels — will travel statewide to provide vital services to Delawareans in harder-to-reach communities. When the units hit the road later this year, caregivers will perform comprehensive exams, offer vaccinations such as the COVID-19 or flu shot, perform point-of-care testing and much more.

Going the distance against lung cancer

During the pandemic, the Friends of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute started planning for its first in-person event in a few years. On April 30, 2022 (postponed from 2021), after months of planning, they hosted a 5K Run/Walk for the Lung, bringing over 400 people for this inaugural event at ChristianaCare’s Newark campus. With more than 44 teams, the event raised nearly $200,000. ChristianaCare is grateful to the Katzin Family for their Step Up to the Challenge matching gift of $375,000. Funds raised from the 5K will enable ChristianaCare to acquire Delaware’s first robotic bronchoscope, which allows for more accurate and earlier detection of lung cancer. Lung cancer is the cause of 33% of Delaware’s cancer deaths. This new technology is vital to diagnosing lung cancer sooner and saving lives.

Young friends driven to help

Since 2016, the Young Friends of ChristianaCare have raised funds and collected supplies for philanthropic programs that enhance the patient experience. In 2021, more than 111 students from 22 high schools across the region raised thousands for ChristianaCare’s Alexa Home Care Coach™, a provider-driven, patient-customized, proactive care plan delivered through an Alexa “skill,” and collected more than 700 items for COVID-19 relief.

“The Alexa Home Care Coach™ really resonated with me. I loved that it uses new and innovative technology to better people’s lives. Alexa can talk to homebound adults and remind them to take their medicine or do their exercises. It even answers medical questions and offers medical advice regarding COVID-19. During the pandemic older people were very isolated and funding this project became a passion of mine!”

The gift of Moxi

Longtime donor Woody Rice gave a gift to support the pilot of Moxi, a collaborative robot — or “cobot” — that assists nurses in performing everyday tasks like pickups and deliveries, so nurses can spend more time focused on direct patient care.

“I’m really honored. I never believed that me giving a gift of a Moxi to a hospital would lead to so many other possibilities. I’m proud to be part of transforming care not only at ChristianaCare, but also as it influences health care delivery elsewhere.”

many thanks to

OUR DONORS

“My husband, John, received outstanding care when he was a patient at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute. When he passed away, I was searching for a way to honor his legacy and support the phenomenal work happening at ChristianaCare. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that one of the giving options available was naming ChristianaCare as a beneficiary of my retirement plan benefits in my estate plans. Not only was it a wonderful way to pay tribute to my husband’s care, but it also offered a significant tax advantage as well.”

Mark gives for Donna, the love of his life

Mark Williams gives to ChristianaCare in gratitude for the care his wife, Donna, received at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute during her battle with a rare cardiac cancer:

“Every caregiver — from the physicians and nurses to the technicians to the escorts who wheeled her in and out of the center — became family. They treated Donna with respect and compassion, using every innovation to give her more time and better quality of life during the time we did have.”

The ChristianaCare Grateful Patient Program enables patients to thank caregivers for their love and excellence and support the health system’s commitment to our neighbors.

What’s your why?

Thank a caregiver or care team for their love and excellence. Give today! Giving.ChristianaCare.org/gratefulpatient
