Healing Through the Arts

Save the Date for our President’s Reception

During the President’s Reception on September 14th, we celebrated the thousands of philanthropic supporters who help us advance ChristianaCare’s mission each and every day.

For over 50 years, Peggy Johnson painted prolifically from locations throughout New England, the Brandywine Valley and Florida. Her spontaneity, energy, love for nature and color flowed through her work, which was commissioned by corporate clients, including the Marriott Corporation, which features some of her pieces for their hotels in Arizona, California and Oklahoma.

Toward the end of her painting career, Peggy made a habit of parsing her larger works into smaller pieces so they could more easily be shared with others. In the spirit of that generosity, some of her work is now displayed at ChristianaCare’s Avenue North campus thanks to the thoughtful in-kind donation by her son, Scott Johnson of Johnson Commercial Real Estate.

Her primary medium was watercolor and this collection represents about 10% of the unframed or unfinished works she left behind when she passed away in 2014 at age 81. Peggy’s work continues to inspire a sense of calm, healing and joy among our caregivers and visitors.

Junior Board Supports Special Care for Special Patients

The Junior Board of ChristianaCare proudly contributed to two critical ChristanaCare services in 2023: the Pediatric Care Center on our Newark Campus and our Forensic Nurse Examiners program.

The annual JB Cause fundraiser focused on ChristianaCare’s new Pediatric Care Center. In April, the board hosted a daylong event at Christiana Hospital with shopping, music, raffles, light bites and more to support ChristianaCare’s youngest neighbors.

The celebration raised $85,000 for the center, which offers 24/7 inpatient and emergency care for pediatric patients, making it convenient for families and children to receive excellent care in a unique space just for them.

“Philanthropic support of the Pediatric Care Center through JB Cause allows us to continuously optimize our patients’ and families’ experiences as we improve care access and expand care services for the ChristianaCare pediatric community. Our gratitude and the impact of your support are truly immeasurable,” said Megan Mickley, M.D., Director of the Pediatric Care Center.

The Junior Board also made two gifts, totaling $62,000, to the health system’s highly acclaimed Forensic Nurse Examiners program.

Started in 1996, the program offers comprehensive care for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, child or elder abuse and neglect and other violent crimes. Its specially trained nurses are part of our emergency department teams and extend physical and emotional care to the victims of crimes while also collecting and preserving evidence.

The Forensic Nurse Examiners program recently earned the Outstanding Organization award from the Delaware Victims’ Rights Task Force for providing exemplary service, improving the quality of services to victims and influencing long-term change in the victim services field.

“The Junior Board exemplifies ChristianaCare’s values and behaviors,” said Janice E. Nevin, M.D., President and CEO of ChristianaCare Health System. “Every day, the extraordinary people of the board demonstrate that we serve together guided by our values of excellence and love. I speak for all of us at ChristianaCare when I thank the Junior Board from the bottom of my heart for all they do for everyone we serve.”

If you would like to host your own fundraiser, contact Elizabeth Dougherty, Director of Annual Giving at 302-327-3364 or elizabeth.dougherty@christianacare.org

Essential Eats: Gift Supports Nutritious Food for Healthy Babies A Family’s Gift Fights Cancer

The Edna G. Kynett Memorial Foundation is pivotal in providing life-changing food to expecting families. A generous $50,000 grant from the foundation, along with funding from the State of Delaware, supports Food Is Medicine: A Pathway to Healthier Pregnancy Outcomes, a one-year pilot program in New Castle County.

“We know that healthy, nutritious and fresh food is vital to the development of a healthy placenta early in pregnancy,” said program lead Matthew Hoffman, M.D., Marie E. Pinizzotto M.D., Endowed Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “Pregnant people who lack access to good nutrition are more at risk of blood pressure problems, such as preeclampsia, as well as preterm births and other threatening conditions. To nurture the best possible birth outcomes, we aim to provide food rich in critical nutrients throughout pregnancy and in the first post-natal months.”

The pilot, launched in early 2024, gives pregnant people and family members nine months of groceries high in the micronutrients essential for a healthy pregnancy. ChristianaCare also offers culinary equipment, skills training and culturally relevant recipes. Community health workers, registered dietitians and health coaches round out the program with nutrition assessments, educational resources and ongoing support for dietary behavior changes.

“This is a great chance to do something novel in our approach to health outcomes,” said Hoffman.

“I applaud the Kynett Memorial Foundation’s visionary gift and Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester’s championing this program at the state level. Support like theirs makes change happen.”

The Bacchieri family is a longtime and generous philanthropic partner to ChristianaCare, most recently with a gift to support the fight against breast and lung cancers.

In Delaware, the two cancers are among the most frequently diagnosed statewide. The First State has the highest incidence nationally of triple negative breast cancer, the most aggressive form of breast cancer, among the Black population. And lung cancer is responsible for 33% of cancer deaths in Delaware.

Last summer, the Bacchieri family made a $1 million philanthropic investment in the purchase of a state-of-the-art Kubtec XPERT 80 Specimen Radiography System to analyze breast cancer specimens at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute. The funds will also expand an innovative fellowship program to reduce breast and lung cancer disparities.

“We know our investment in the very latest technology to examine pathology specimens and expand the fellowship program in population health/science will advance cancer care, reduce disparities and improve outcomes in Delaware and surrounding communities,” said Stacey Bacchieri. “We hope our support of the Graham Cancer Center will inspire many others to join us in the fight against cancer and to support the underserved populations in our state.”

The portable radiography system will allow pathologists at Graham Cancer Center to process approximately 2,000 breast cases annually,

an increase of 500 cases. The Caspar Wistar Bacchieri Disparities Fellowship in Cancer Population supports population health cancer researchers focusing on cancer control and prevention activities that have the potential to significantly decrease cancer disparities, especially in breast cancer and lung cancer.

“ChristianaCare is deeply grateful to Stacey Bacchieri and her family for their generous gift and continued support of our cancer program,” said Nicholas Petrelli, M.D., Bank of America Endowed Medical Director of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute.

He added, “This new radiography system will be transformational and provide several benefits for our breast cancer patients, enabling providers to see the finest details in the widest range of specimens while reducing turnaround time. And fellowship will offer exceptional autonomy and resources to qualified candidates who will join the next generation of scientific leaders.”

2023 Report to Donors 23

The Planned Giving Society

Planned gifts create extraordinary opportunities to advance health care and leave a legacy of support for initiatives that will have an impact for years to come.

The 1888 Society is named in honor of the philanthropic tradition that began well over a century ago by J. Taylor Gause, who helped establish the Homeopathic Hospital in Wilmington. His vision in 1888 led to what is today one of the region’s leading health care systems.

We are grateful for these visionary individuals who have chosen to support ChristianaCare through financial and estate planning.
