History before there was a school, there was a camp. Miami Country Day School was founded in 1938, but its origins are closely tied to the world of Summer Programs. In 1926, L.B. Sommers and Doc Abele took over a defunct summer camp formerly run by the YMCA. The camp was situated atop Lookout Mountain, near the point where Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama touch. The staff at Cloudmont became legendary, and the success of the camp was phenomenal. The key was simple enough: total involvement for eight weeks in a world of nature, sports, creative activity, superb food, and the instinctive knowledge of the needs and desires of the growing boy. The men who were campers and teachers at Cloudmont who went on to national prominence in varied fields are legion. Hundreds of parents of Cloudmont boys came to realize what the Sommers-Abele team were capable of in the teaching and development of young boys of school age. And somewhere along the way, these two men also began to realize it. Camp Cloudmont would become the mother-lode of Miami Country Day School. Now, over 90 years since the start of Camp Cloudmont, our summer programs are highly varied—coed sports, specialty camps, travel programs, academic courses, and, of course, our ever-popular Day Camp. However, one thing remains the same, you are sure to find your bliss at MCDS.

Georgee & Company is our proud Summer Programs Sponsor for the fourth year in a row through our MCDS Business Partners Program. To learn more about how you can become a Business Partner, see pg. 10.

Miami Country Day prides itself on putting the safety and security of our students and staff first. The gated campus requires all visitors to identify themselves and go through a quick background check before entering. All camp visitors are required to report to the Summer Camp Office. No adults should be on campus without an escort.

Please follow these procedures closely. Failure to do so will cause tremendous upheaval in an already sensitive situation.

All programs will receive nametags with their camper(s) name and program affiliation on the first day of camp. Nametags must be clearly visible on the car dashboard If you decide to park and walk your camper onto campus, during arrival and dismissal. swimming pool policy

If someone besides a guardian on file will be picking up your child, you need to submit a Permission for Pick-Up Form. All forms are located on our Parent Portal online.

There are certified lifeguards who are trained in CPR on the pool deck at all times. We employ a large and welltrained Aquatics Staff. All of our staff have received their WSI lifeguard and CPR certifications. The ratio of campers to swimming instructors is not greater than 1:5.

weather alert policy Everyone remains under cover if there is lightning within a 3-mile radius. If this occurs during drop off or pick up, you will need to wait in your car until the threat subsides or park and pick up or drop off your child at their program location (cabin for Day Campers). Visit the Summer Camp Office if you need assistance navigating the campus.

Unless a camper has a doctor’s note and a legitimate reason to not get in the pool (a broken limb, illness, etc.), we expect that campers will go swimming when swim is on their schedule.

Note: it may seem like a sunny day where we are, but if lightning is near, we will keep campers safely under cover.

Every new camper will be required to take a preliminary swim test at the beginning of the week. Campers will be put into groups of similar ability level and given a colored bracelet to indicate their swimming ability:

You will be notified if there is a weather alert via email. A warning banner will also be on our website.

Green: Passed swim test and can participate in pool activities.

before- and after-care Playhouse90 offers play-time and fun for campers and parents who want a little more time in the morning or in the afternoons. Our professional before and after-care staff offers a safe and educational environment for campers from 7:30 – 9:00 AM and from 4:00 – 6:00 PM for a small fee. Students attending Playhouse90 must be accompanied to the classroom and picked up in the classroom by a parent. Playhouse90 is located in the former Drama Room (see map on pg. 6 for exact location).

hurricane/severe weather In the case of severe weather or a named storm, please check our website for the most updated information. If we should have to close the campus, you will receive a phone call and email from us.

behavior policy The School does not condone bullying or harassment of any kind. All reported incidents, verbal or written, will promptly be investigated by the Program Director or Director of Auxiliary Programs. Upon a determination of bullying or harassment, appropriate action will be taken against any camper or employee who has violated this policy. Actions may include one or more of the following: warning, parent conference, suspension, or dismissal.

Red: Did not pass swim test. Day Campers will be taught how to swim in their designated swim time. All other summer programs will participate in an alternative activity during pool time. Yellow: Registered for private lessons. Please read below for information about how to register. Your children need to wear their bracelets all week. Please do not take them off. Multi-week campers can expect to receive a new bracelet at the start of every week. If your child did not pass their swim test and is given a red bracelet, they will be placed in our learn to swim program taking place during their groups designated swim time. This service is provided as part of their Day Camp aquatics offerings. If they are in one of our other Summer Programs, we strongly encourage you to register him/her for swim lessons with our Aquatics staff, which can be set up as small group instructional swim lessons during the scheduled swim activity or as private lessons before or after their program. All students who are registered for swim lessons will be given a yellow bracelet and be allowed to swim with instruction during their program’s scheduled pool time. Call the Aquatics Office at 305-7796778 or email Aquatics@miamicountryday.org to inquire about swim lessons.

day camp Letter from the Day Camp Director, Ian McNamara Can we get a HOORAAAHHH for summer? We are all so excited that it’s here again because we know that we are about to share the most incredible experience with your wonderful children. The summer enrichment never stops improving at Miami Country Day Camp, and this year we have really gone above and beyond. With our new gokarting activity and archery range we have once again ensured that our drive to provide the best activities, facilities, and fun for your kids is unparalleled. You will also see new special events during our theme weeks such as the Amazing Adam magician extraordinaire. Once again our two camp shows on July 21st and August 2nd in the Center for the Arts will blow you away with some spectacular performances as well as a special message for everyone. We want to thank you for entrusting your child to us this summer as we strive to provide them (and you!) with nothing but the very best we have to offer. Drop-Off and Pick-Up Instructions Drop-off is from 8:30 AM – 8:55 AM and pick-up is from 3:40 PM – 4:10 PM. Our efficient drop-off and pick-up takes place in the North Campus Turnaround by our Center for the Arts (see pg. 6 for exact location). Late campers should report to the Summer Camp Office. Please say your goodbyes prior to the drop-off line. We need to be quick and efficient in keeping the drop-off line moving for everyone. It takes a village, y’all! In the afternoon, we will strap in all little ones Grade 1 and up in your vehicle for safety and you’ll be on your way! For PreK and Kinder cabins you will need to park in the garage and come into the Center for the Arts to collect your precious cargo. Every car that enters the drop-off and pick-up line must display a yellow name-plate in the dashboard. YOU WILL GET THIS ON THE FIRST DAY YOUR CAMPER IS IN ATTENDANCE. If someone besides yourself is picking up your camper, please complete the “Permission for Pick Up” form located on our Parent Portal online. This includes anyone picking up a camper due to an emergency or call from the nurse because of a missing medical authorization form. Hours Camp begins each day with the Morning Blast-Off at 9:00 AM and ends at 3:35 PM.

Registration Day Camp’s Multi-Week Discounts are available in bulk purchases. The minimum number of discounted weeks is two. In other words, if you send your child to Day Camp for 6 weeks, he/she is eligible for the 6 week price, which is $415/week. If you should choose to then add a 7th week, you may do so but will pay the same rate as you paid for 6 weeks. Your best bet is to buy in bulk. Uniforms Each camper will receive one camp T-shirt and backpack on their first day of camp. Additional T-shirts, water bottles, and hats can be purchased in the Camp Office. You can wear last year’s shirts, too. Closed-toe sneakers are a must. Students also need pool shoes for swimming. What to Bring Water bottle, sunscreen (spray-on preferred), bug spray, bathing suit, towel, pool shoes, and big smiles. Pre-K and Kindergarten campers also need a change of clothes in case of emergency and a mat or sleeping bag for resting. A note about sunscreen: It is very important that you apply sunscreen on your campers in the morning and that you teach your children how to apply sunscreen. A note about hair: While we strive to make our camp nature-like, we don’t need to share every part of nature. Lice, while harmless, are not so very nice. We recommend spraying long-hair with hairspray and reiterating with your children the importance of not sharing hats and blankets with their classmates. What to Leave at Home Jewelry, toys, candy, and electronic devices, including cell phones. We strongly discourage the use of electronic devices during the camp day. If a camper brings an electronic device such as a phone or a video game, we will hold it for him or her in the camp office. Movie Nights Every Friday night during weeks 2 through 7 is “Dinner and a Movie” at Day Camp. Watch your email each week to see what’s showing and to fill out the weekly permission slip. For the small fee of $15/per camper, your campers get dinner, snacks, games, supervision, and a movie, and YOU get a Date Night! Campers stay after camp and pick up is at 8:00 PM sharp. A link to the movie night registration will be emailed to you each week your camper is registered.
