Carine and her daughter Catherine MacKenzie Lately we’ve commemorated several anniversaries. 2011 marked 400 years since the publication of the King James Bible – See Guarding the Treasure on page 8. Then there was the sinking of the Titanic 100 years ago. See Titanic: The Ship of Dreams on page 5. We also published Carine Mackenzie’s 150th book, 365 Great Bible Stories. That has been quite a landmark for us at Christian Focus Publications. See the following page. 2011 also sees our 30th Trailblazer on the life of Eric Liddell – Finish the Race. Go to page 6. It’s good to see this published in time for the London Olympics 2012. With all these thoughts about numbers and history it’s fitting that we’ve published The Magnificent, Amazing Time Machine by Sinclair B. Ferguson (see page 24). This book takes us on a journey back to the Cross; that point in time that changes everything when we believe its truth and trust in the one who gave up his life there.

Christian Focus Celebrates Carine MacKenzie’s 150th Book! Carine and William’s young girls used to ask as they read a children’s book ‘Does the Bible really say that?’ and the answer would have to be on too many occassions ‘no’. William and Carine and William’s brothers knew there was a need for Christian books that were true to the Bible. Carine sat down to write her first children’s book, Gideon (See the Bible Time Series, page 23) while her two year old daughter was at her feet blissfully playing with a basin of a water. Over thirty years have passed since that day and Carine’s books have been translated into more than seventy languages and sold over 3 million copies. In 2011 we celebrate the launch of Carine’s 150th Book: 365 Great Bible stories, the good news of Jesus from Genesis to Revelation sums up what CF4k Books are all about. Faithful to God’s Word, focussed on the Gospel and filled with application for a child’s life.

1. God Made The World - Genesis 1
I
n the beginning God made the heavens and the earth. At first everything was dark and empty. God spoke, ‘Let there be light.’ And there was light. God called the light day and the darkness night. On the second day God made the sky with clouds and atmosphere. God made all the water in the world. On the third day he formed the dry land. ‘Let the seas be gathered into one place and let the dry land appear,’ God said. By God’s powerful Word, hills and valleys were made, mountains and plains. Trees and plants, grass and flowers were made to cover the land. God saw that what he had made was good.
2. God’s Powerful Word - Genesis 1
O
n the fifth day God made the fish and sea creatures that live in the oceans – the huge whale and the tiny shrimp – all made by God. God also made all the birds that fly through the air – the eagle, the robin, the seagull and all the rest. God knew that what he had made was good. On the sixth day God made all the animals. ‘Let the earth bring forth living
On the fourth day God put in place the sun, moon and stars. This gave order to the day and night. The sun gave warmth and daylight to God’s world. God made all the stars in the universe. It is impossible for us to count them but God counts the stars and names each one of them. God was pleased with what he had made. THINK: The Word of God is powerful.
creatures,’ God said and it happened by his powerful Word. God made the cattle and sheep, the lion and tiger, the mouse and snake. God saw that it was good. THINK: When we look at all the animals, birds, insects and fish that God has made, it should help us to praise him for his wisdom and power.
Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is called the Word. By him the light was produced. He is the true light, the Light of the World.

Lucille Travis Inspired to tell the story of Paul Brand… Lucille was retelling the story of Dr. Paul Brand’s work with lepers especially his long search for shoes that would protect their feet at a Children’s Awana club when the idea for the book “The Shoes that Love Made” came about. The story of Paul Brand, missionary doctor to lepers in India and eventually world-wide, shows us how his own feet were protected and guided even in war time on the very path he was to follow, one that would forever change how the world saw lepers. Her interest in writing began as young girl living in an orphanage in upstate New York, and was encouraged when she received a bronze medal in a state-wide essay contest and later a poetry contest. Lucille Travis has written several books for children, held children’s writing workshops, taught college-level English, and lectured in Christian literature. One of her joys today is encouraging the efforts of young writers.

Wherefore he began to retire himself to his chamber to pray for and pity them, and also to condole his own misery; he would also walk solitarily in the fields, sometimes reading, and sometimes praying: and thus for some days he spent his time. Now I saw, upon a time, when he was walking in the fields, that he was (as he was wont) reading in his book, and greatly distressed in his mind; and as he read, he burst out, as he had done before, crying, ‘What shall I do to be saved?’ Acts 16:30,31. I saw also that he looked this way, and that way, as if he would run; yet he stood still because (as I perceived) he could not tell which way to go. I looked then, and saw a man named Evangelist coming to him, and he asked, ‘Wherefore dost thou cry?’ He answered, ‘Sir, I perceive, by the book in my hand, that I am condemned to die, and after that to come to judgment; and I find that I am not willing to do the first, nor able to do the second.’ Heb. 9:27; Job 16:21;22; Ezek. 22:14. Then said Evangelist, ‘Why not willing to die, since this life is attended with so many evils?’ The man answered, ‘Because, I fear that this burden that is upon my back will sink me lower than the grave, and I shall fall into Tophet*. And Sir, if I be not fit to go to prison, I am not fit to go to judgment, and from thence to execution; and the thoughts of these things make me cry.’ Isa. 30:33. Then said Evangelist, ‘If this be thy condition, why standest thou still?’ He answered, ‘Because I know not whither to go.’ Then he gave him a parchment roll, and there was written within, ‘Fly from the wrath to come.’ Matt. 3:7. The man therefore read it, and looking upon Evangelist very carefully, said, ‘Whither must I fly?’ Then said Evangelist, (pointing with his finger over a very wide field,) ‘Do you see yonder wicket-gate?’ 16

On Fire
And other Bible stories you got to hear Irene Howat Watch out – these stories are H…H…Hot! They are all from the bible and show how God has used fire throughout scripture in a variety of ways. He used it to keep Adam and Eve out of the garden, fire to get Moses to pay attention; to help the Israelites find their way through the dark; soldiers with torches arrest Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane. Peter warms himself by some flames while at the same time he denies the Lord Jesus. Jesus himself cooks a fish on the beach after his resurrection and the Holy Spirit comes down on the disciples at Pentecost with tongues of flame. Books Ablaze
And other church history stories you got to hear Irene Howat Irene Howat tells the Christian story behind incidents in history. Books were amongst some of the things set alight during church history. In fact flames were used to persecute Christians throughout church history. But there was one fire that didn’t happen – on the 5th of November 1605 Guy Fawkes and others decided to set fire to the Houses of Parliament in the United Kingdom. You will see how not even fire or the plans of evil men can separate Christians from the Love of God. (RT7-8; RM 8-12) ISBN 978-1-84550-781-4 | Trade | 112 Pages |PB | £5.99 $8.99
Singing Soldiers
And other Bible stories you got to hear Barbara Haley You wouldn’t send a choir into a battle? Would you set up a sing-song in a stinking old jail? What would you cheer about if your enemy and all his chariots had just gone belly up in the Red Sea? Could you sing a cranky old king out of his bad mood? And what about when you’ve just lost everything you’ve ever loved and singing must be the last thing on your mind? Well, each one of these situations is a real life story. An accomplished children’s author creates five tales of modern day children in order to tell true life Bible stories in a new light. And with Colin Buchanan’s amazing book Super Saviour, once again Colin’s comin’ at ya with power-packed stories and mighty memory verses, brimming with God’s indestructible Bible truth. Jesus Number 1 There are some mighty, mountains in the world. The highest mountain of all is called Mount Everest. It is very hard and very dangerous climbing Mt. Everest but some people have managed to get to the very top. But sometimes, when they finally get there, mist and clouds cover the whole mountain. All they can see is thick, grey fog. But… if the clouds part and the mist clears, suddenly they see a magnificent view of mountains and snow and valleys. That’s when they know that they’re standing on the very highest place in the world. Jesus rules this world but the mists of sin and unbelief can make us wonder, “Is Jesus really Number One?” We need to remember that one day Jesus will come in mighty power to blow away the mists of doubt and sin once and for all. On that day, everyone will see Jesus as He is – Number One, King of All! Will you trust and serve and honour Him now? Only those who believe in Jesus will be saved, to enjoy and marvel at the clear view of His goodness and greatness forever!
Jesus, help me to see through the mists and clouds of unbelief and sin. Help me to live for you, day-by-day, remembering that you alone are Number One. Thank you that all who trust you can look forward to a clear, joyful, view of your awesome glory. Amen.

Ephesians 2:8-10 Have you ever flown a kite? You hold the string and the wind blows the colourful kite up, up into the air. But…if you get too close to the trees, lookout! When your kite gets stuck in the trees it could get wrecked and that means no more flying. But…what if someone with a long ladder comes along and kindly and carefully untangles the kite, rolls up the string and gives it all back to you, safe and sound? Well, you could find a better place – away from the trees – to fly your kite again. Christians are saved from their sins – like that kite was untangled from the tree. Sin wrecks lives and we all need to be saved. Jesus carefully and kindly frees us from being wrecked forever by sin when we come to Him in faith. But that’s not the end of the story. The kite was freed to fly again, wasn’t it? Only Jesus can save us from sin. Only Jesus can set us free to love and serve God and other people, just as God planned.

God’s Map, the Bible Have you ever been lost? Really, really lost? Maybe you were on a long trip, or a big walk, or at the markets. A wrong turn here, a wrong turn there—and all of sudden you don’t know where you are! But… what if you had a map? A map can show you where you came from, where you are and where you need to go. Of course, you need the right map. And you need to know how to read it properly. Well, God has given us a map for our lives—it’s the BIBLE. The Bible tells us the safe way, the best way—the ONLY WAY—to Him. If you live by the Word of God and do what He says, God will guide you day by day—and you’ll never be lost!

Dear God, it’s so amazing that you save sinners! You are so full of goodness and mercy! I was helpless. I only deserved your holy anger, yet you saved me by the gift of faith in the Lord Jesus. Help me to use my freedom from sin to do the good things you have prepared for me to do. Amen.
Author Profile – Sinclair Ferguson exclaims, “It was very difficult to write.” What is this author talking about here? Perhaps it’s an article for a learned theological magazine? Maybe it’s a textbook for academics? Would you believe me if I told you it was a children’s book? Well it is. Sinclair Ferguson, a well known respected lecturer and Senior Pastor at First Presbyterian Church, Columbia has written a number of children’s books: The Big Book of Bible Truths 1 & 2,The Big Book of Questions and Answers, The Big Book of Questions and Answers about Jesus; The Plan: How God got the world ready for Jesus; The Magnificent Amazing Time Machine: A Journey Back to the Cross as well as the Jesus Teaches Us series. It takes great discipline, thought and insight to write theology and doctrine for children. Not only did the Christian bookselling community of the U.K. recognize this by awarding The Big Book of Questions and Answers the CBC children’s book of the year award, but many families also witness to the fact that they have discovered more about God and Jesus Christ through these books, and that is what it is all about. See Sinclair’s Jesus Teaches us series on page 18
