Dear guest, Welcome to our 2017 Hotels & Holidays brochure. At Christian Guild we are proud to be specialists in providing holidays and travel experiences. As well as the release of our new Hotels & Holidays brochure, we are delighted to share with you a range of new Speciality and Feature Breaks. Whether you’re looking to hike in the Lake District, enjoy the Midlands by steam train, discover the stunning landscapes of the Wye Valley, explore the Jurassic Coast around Sidmouth, or relax on the pristine sands at St. Ives, our knowledgeable reception teams are ready to help you plan your perfect holiday. Within the following pages you will find our usual exciting array of breaks in Britain and a range of brand new Christian Guild Holidays Further Afield. Our reservations teams at the hotels and head office are always delighted to talk you through your travel interests and highlight tours you may enjoy the most. Please do not hesitate to contact us to ask for suggestions. With best wishes,

Kevin Mantle, Managing Director of Christian Guild

New for 2017

This year we’re proud to introduce a new range of Speciality Breaks, covering everything from painting on the Cornish coast to travelling through the Midlands behind steam locomotives, all tailored to meet our guests’ growing expectations.

We’ve launched a self-contained Mews activity holiday unit at Willersley Castle in Derbyshire (p. 20). Whether you want to enjoy a hobby or try something new, we can tailor your package to provide the necessary local experts.

Hosts

As well as being looked after by our friendly and caring staff, on most weeks you’ll also be welcomed by our wonderful volunteer hosts. Our hosts make sure you have everything you need, take care of you on excursions, and lead the devotions and entertainment during your stay with us.

It’s just one of the many ways that makes Christian Guild unique. You’re not just a tourist, you’re our guest and we want to make sure you always receive the warmest welcome and the best in Christian hospitality.

Early Payment Discount

We continue to offer our fantastic Early Payment Discount deal – pay for your holiday in full at least six months before it starts, you can save 4%! (Excludes our Holidays Further Afield.)

Our Price Promise

With our Speciality Breaks catering for every aspect of your holiday, we guarantee that there are no hidden surcharges – the package price includes it all. We also guarantee that our guests who book in advance will never pay a higher price than those who book at the ‘last minute’ – if we reduce the price of any of our UK breaks, we will automatically apply the same savings to our customers who have already booked.

Holidays for Individuals

If you holiday alone, you’ll know that many hotels and holiday companies add a supplement to the advertised price if you’re on your own. But not at Christian Guild as we have a number of single rooms at each hotel, and at certain times of the year we have double and twin rooms as well without a single supplement.

With a warm welcome and friendly atmosphere, you’ll find our hotels offer a great break for you. And we’re sure you’ll meet new, like-minded friends.

Speciality Breaks

If you have a hobby or want to try a new experience, then our Speciality Breaks are renowned for offering a funpacked holiday. There’s a wide variety of activities on offer so we’ve put them into categories in our Breaks Calendar (p. 10–13) to make it easier for you to find the right holiday for you: Arts & Crafts, Coach Holidays, Gardens, History & Heritage, Music & Dancing, Singles, Spiritual, and Walking. There are also fantastic Family Breaks during the school holidays (p. 6), and a range of Celebration Breaks for Easter, Christmas and New Year (p. 8–9).

You can choose what you do on a Speciality Break too. So if you decide to visit a local tourist attraction during your stay, that’s up to you – you’re not obliged to take part in every activity because it’s all about you doing what you enjoy when you take a well-earned break.

Package Prices

If you decide to try a Speciality Break, then you’ll get a much better deal if you opt for our package price. Booking your accommodation and activities together is cheaper than booking separately and it means all the costs of excursions, tuition, materials and even, in some cases, packed lunches are paid for in advance of your holiday. The brochure package prices are for standard en-suite accommodation; just contact the hotels if you would like a different accommodation option.

ituated on the southern edge of the Lake District, overlooking the expanse of Morecambe Bay, Abbot Hall Hotel is a charming country hotel with a relaxed environment. The present mansion, nestling in the hamlet of Kents Bank, was built in 1840 and now boasts a wide range of facilities, including a 15m heated indoor swimming pool and a children’s adventure area. For those relaxing at the hotel, there are well-appointed lounges. Diners are offered a delicious choice of home-cooked dishes, with locally-sourced produce where possible. There are also five self-catering pine lodges in the grounds – so there really is something for everyone.

Jill Durnford “After many years in education, I was thrilled to be able to train as a Blue Badge Guide for Cumbria. It seems to be the perfect job, combining my love of talking to people with my many and varied interests.

I like to think that I am following the example of Cumbrian resident John Ruskin who was interested in art, architecture, the environment and society (amongst many other interests) though I am not quite the expert that he was!

I do hope you will join me on one of my tours and I look forward to sharing my love of Cumbria with you.”

The holiday will include a number of new excursions and free time to explore the historic village of Cromford and the surrounding area. Package Price: £425

Join us as we visit some of the architectural masterpieces and historically important stately homes of Derbyshire, including Hardwick Hall – one of Britain’s most interesting and complete Elizabethan houses – and Sudbury Hall Museum of Childhood. Eyam has a sense of being a holy place because of the sacrifice of its people in 1655. The people of Eyam refused to flee with only their Christian faith motivating them. Their commitment saved the surrounding area but cost about a third of the villagers their lives.

Featured Break

Steaming Through the Valleys 6th – 11th August (5 nights)

Our popular ‘Trains through the Valleys’ break has been re-named for 2017 as each day out will now include travelling with steam! The famous headboard of the ‘Willersley Belle’ has been dusted off and will be proudly carried on the front of an engine. Included for the first time will be a journey on the Severn Valley Railway which, together with travel in Derbyshire and Leicestershire, will enable our guests to relax and enjoy some wonderful English countryside. There will be plenty of interest for railway enthusiasts, but for those not quite into train-spotting there will be alternative options and, of course, a stay in the jewel of the Derbyshire Dales – Willersley Castle Hotel. Tours will be led by Peter and Jennie Binks with hosts Val Smith and Gordon Dine. Peter, a Christian Guild Director, says “This is a wonderful opportunity to get out of the Board Room to be with our guests and there could be no better background than travel by rail.” Package Price: £545 Includes: Full board; all excursions.

For reasons beyond the control of Christian Guild this break will include some walking over uneven surfaces and is regrettably not suitable for anyone who is wheelchair bound.

The Severn Valley Railway

The Severn Valley Railway opened in 1862, originally running for 40 miles between Hartlebury and Shrewsbury. It was absorbed into the Great Western Railway in the 1870s and a link line was constructed to Kidderminster. After nationalisation passenger numbers dwindled and the line was gradually closed between 1963 and 1970. However, it was almost immediately opened as a heritage railway and now runs regular steam hauled passengers trains for 16 miles between Bridgnorth in Shropshire & Kidderminster in Worcestershire.

Beaches & Coves

1

• St Ives Bay & Porthminster Beach [1]

The far south-west peninsula of Cornwall could almost be another country. It basks in an all together warmer climate – allowing plants to grow here that would struggle in most other parts of Britain – and enjoys warmer waters lapping at its abundance of sandy beaches and crashing into its dramatic coves. A European centre of tin-mining since before even Roman times (and Poldark!), there is a wealth of history and heritage embedded in the land, not to mention its fair share of myths and legends. If ‘those feet’ really did walk upon England’s mountains green, Cornwall is the most likely place they would have set down. What is more certain is that they were followed by those of John Wesley in the late 1700s.

New for 2017

During the spring of 2017 we anticipate undertaking a modernisation and development programme at Treloyhan Manor Hotel. The first stage will be to create a new access road with new and improved car and coach parking facilities. We are also implementing an internal programme of modernisation of all bedrooms that will be finalised with the second floor during the latter part of the year and early 2018. This includes a number of access-friendly bedrooms with wet room facilities, and installation of a lift to all floors.

Hotel Facilities

• Coffee shop • Licensed restaurant • Beautiful gardens • Lounge and TV lounge • Wireless internet • Music room • Croquet • Table tennis • Television in every bedroom • Hairdryer in every bedroom • Tea and coffee making facilities in all bedrooms

37

In the winter of 2017/2018 we will commence with the second stage of our planned developments. This will include the reinstatement of the grand Victorian-style conservatory with magnificent sea views. We will also be introducing five new selfcatering cottages. A Service and Infrastructure Plan will also be implemented, which will provide a new heating and hot water system and a new tele-communications system throughout the hotel supplying super-fast broadband to every room. Over the years F W Meyer's original parkland scheme, which provided the magnificent sea view, has been lost. We have therefore produced a 25 year Landscape Management Plan to deliver a vision for the grounds and protect the landscape, including the introduction of a Tree Preservation Order. r em

From the chic capital of Reykjavik some of the country’s most remarkable highlights are accessible in daytrips including the world famous Blue Lagoon hot pools and the Golden Circle – a 190mile circular route encompassing many of Iceland’s most famous landmarks such as the Strokkur Geyser, Gullfoss Waterfalls and Thingvellir – site of the world’s first parliament in 930AD.

Festival at Tettuccio Spa Garden Open-air Concerts • Lucca • Pisa Montecatini Terme • Florence A philosopher once said, “Without music, life would be a mistake.” We feel much the same, and are offering a spectacular tour to the mediæval town of Montecatini Terme, in the Tuscany region of Italy, as it hosts an annual festival amongst the elegant surroundings of the Tettuccio spa gardens, as well as open-air concerts at other nearby locations.
