lifelines MARCH 2013

lifelines There must have been a lot of events throughout history that did not seem in any way momentous as they took place but they have rightly taken on huge significance in the centuries that have followed. School history lessons have a way of reminding us that the world we now live in evolved from these incidents and the way the people involved in them behaved and responded. For example…. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914. A 19 year old student, Gavrilo Pincip, shot dead the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and his wife in protest at the lack of freedom for Serbia. This event was the spark that ignited all the tensions of Europe into the First World War. Rosa Parks , coming home from work on 20th December 1955 refused to give her seat up for a white man. She wasn't tired physically or emotionally but, in her words, "tired of giving up." Her refusal, arrest and subsequent publicity triggered the Montgomery Bus Protest, the emergence of Martin Luther King and the launch of the Civil Rights Movement in the USA. Within 10 years the Civil Rights Act had been passed giving Black Americans legal equality. John Glass, Elim’s General Superintendent, says that ‘the doors of history swing on small hinges’. The seemingly insignificant moments of history have truly shaped the world we live in today. And so it is true that the public spectators stood at the foot of the cross looking up at three accused criminals could not have known the momentous events they were witnessing – but we do! The world changed forever at that moment. God gave himself to save his world. Easter is not seen with this level of significance by many today but that does not mean for one minute that it is not as momentous as it has always been. Much of the triumph of Easter is unseen even to those of us who understand what an amazing event it was. The invisible battle that raged in the heavenlies as the Son of God voluntarily carried the sin of the world on his shoulders, is more than a human can see – but it was very real. An empty cross and an empty tomb spell victory for the follower of JESUS. “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:55-56)

HEALING ON THE STREETS Friday 8th March 2-3pm in the Lifehouse Lounge for prayer and preparation Saturday 9th March 10.30am-12pm Northfield High Street (by Post Office) Healing on the Streets is a simple, but beautiful way to reach out to the lost and hurting on the main high street in Northfield. It enables us to connect with our community, powerfully expressing God’s love in the middle of the normal, routines of living. We simply invite people to sit on chairs so we can pray for them. We create a place on the streets where heaven and earth meet. Amongst the hustle and bustle of busy shoppers, walks the Prince of Peace. Passers-by begin to slow and stop, as the presence of God draws their hearts. Over time we are able to build relationships, creating stepping stones for people to come to Jesus, and be healed along the way.

How can I be involved? If you are interested in finding out more about this ministry and how you can be involved, please speak to Jean Perini: 07737 117 321. We are also looking for drivers who can support the ministry on a rota basis by driving the church van with equipment from the Lifehouse into Northfield and back again afterwards. Alternatively, you can come along and meet with the team on the Friday afternoon prior to each Saturday ministry session at the Lifehouse from 2-3pm to pray and prepare.

THE RHYTHM OF LIFE By Doreen Smith My heart is beating to the RHYTHM OF LIFE. That in turn rushes through my veins, giving rise to poems of praise to my Maker and my God. Infusing my whole being producing love and gifts of the Holy Spirit who thrills me through and through. Culminating in joy unspeakable and full of glory. Twinned with a peace that passes understanding. Can you see how rich I am? My boast is in the Lord who fulfils all the promises that He has given to me.
