O

PREFACE

n September 11, 2001 the United States of America suffered a tragic loss when a vicious assault was made on freedom. Two 757 jumbo jets seized by Middle Eastern terrorists crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City. The first plane crashed at 8:41 a.m. into the first tower on that unforgettable Tuesday morning; the second plane crashed into tower two nineteen minutes later. Both towers collapsed shortly thereafter. A third plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and a fourth plane, believed to be heading to Camp David, crashed in Pennsylvania. The plan for that airliner was foiled due to the heroic efforts of the passengers on board. More than three thousand people lost their lives. All four planes were hijacked as part of a diabolical master-minded plot to send a message to the world. America was the target, but a message was sent to all governments around the world. No one is exempt from the terror of the enemy. Well, it was a message we’ll never forget. In an instant, we all looked to God for answers. Where prayer was once banned it was now solicited. The cry “God bless America” began to

ring out from the mouths of celebrities and ordinary people, Republicans and Democrats, transcending social classes and educational barriers From the heart of the financial district in New York to Washington, D.C., innocent blood that was shed cried out for justice. A united call rose to the ears of a compassionate God. Out of the monstrosity an answer was provoked: 91:1. Satan, the enemy, meant to send a message of hate but the true message prevailed. Psalm 91 teaches us to trust in God during trying and adverse times. It demonstrates to us why we should have confidence in him. It also shows us the security and blessing we receive if we do trust in Him. The entire Psalm is a message of comfort and security: He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the LORD,

which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation. (Psalms 91) Mass Exodus In the days that followed the toll of the aftermath was great. Thousands of families were changed and reduced senselessly. Hundreds of firefighters, police officers and rescue workers gave their lives saving people trapped in the towers. Threats about the tunnels and bridges started pouring in and immediately the city was shut down. No one could get in. Thousands of people could be seen walking, running and driving across the bridge to New Jersey. All major sporting events were cancelled. All television shows forfeited their airtime and yielded to the unrelenting drama that un-folded and changed the way we live. Over and over we witnessed the horrific violence that seized our hearts and crippled us with fear. Who can forget all the bereaved people flooding lower Manhattan with pic-tures and tears in their eyes, in search of family members, or lists with the names of their family members, or even the remains from the rubble—any news that could bring some closure, one way or another.

91:1 The Real Message

Repeatedly, the hopes and the faith of the mourners rose and fell as bodies were recovered and one or two people were found alive. As the death toll rose, the pleading of companies soliciting their employees to “call and report were futile.

CHAPTER ONE THE MESSAGE He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. (Psalms 91:1)

O

n 9-11, a date that will forever remind us of a series of unparalleled events that catapulted us into the next move of God, the two World Trade Center towers, the heart of the New York financial district, were leveled to the ground. Thousands of tons of twisted steel created the largest, costliest burial ground in America’s history. Not because of the towers’ financial significance, but because in its ashes lay the remains of thousands of people whose poten-tial contributions, passions, talents and gifts to their families, the society in which they lived and the world could never be replaced. Grief was shared around the world and fear seized us! As I sat at my desk performing my routine morning tasks and duties, I heard over the radio that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. In disbelief, I sat and listened to the drama that was repeated over and over again. Before that news could settle (as much as it could), the horror was perpetuated—another hit, the other tower. The reality struck

a horrific blow: we were under attack. An enemy from within had stabbed us. Terrorism, the unthinkable, deep in the heart of the United States—New York City. Devastating scenes were projected twenty-four hours a day on every news station for seven days and nights. Images of people jumping to their death from elevated floors in the Trade Center were gruesome. We saw wounded people, covered with dust and soot, wandering about lower Manhattan. What a message: Be afraid—be very afraid. And we were. It was then that the Lord showed me the message within the message that I hadn’t seen on my own. “9-11” was on the television screen and in the newspapers but every time I looked at it I saw 91:1. The first time I saw it I said, “What?” Then the Lord said, “Get your Bible. Turn to the Psalms.” I had long ago committed those verses to memory; but then the Lord showed me something. There is only one 91:1 in the Bible and it is in the book of Psalms. Powerful! All these years we asso-ciated 911 with trouble. When in trouble, make the distress call, dial 911. Isn’t this just like God to have an answer thousands of years before the question is asked? When in trouble we should seek 91:1— the biblical version, that is.
