Save the Indian River Lagoon The oyster restoration project is as unique and diverse as the estuary it works to restore. The Indian River Lagoon is the most biologically diverse estuary in the continental United States with over 4,000 plant and animal species considering it home. This treasure exists right here in our own back yards and needs our help! Why oysters?! Oysters are filter feeders that improve water quality and clarity by filtering water –one oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day! Oysters are also a food source and provide habitat for many species of fish, birds, and invertebrates, and oyster reefs stabilize and protect shorelines. But, oysters face a number of threats including overharvesting, habitat degradation, reduced water quality, disease, and boat wakes. The oyster mats—constructed from mesh and oyster shells—are placed in the Indian River Lagoon to provide a natural substrate for oyster larvae to settle. Results show that the oyster mat restoration technique as very successful - after one year in the water, an average of 93 new oysters settled on each mat! This project is a community based restoration project, which means that without YOU we can’t help save our lagoon. Thanks to approximately 36,000 volunteers since the project started, together with the project partners, we constructed more than 35,000 oyster restoration mats to restore 61 reefs in Mosquito Lagoon. Argentina was an incredible trip full of surfing, new friends, and being challenged, grown and inspired in my walk with the Lord. To start the trip off, on my way to Argentina I prayed that I would have some type of divine interaction in someway on my layover and flight to Argentina. A friend of mine from Hawaii, who I met in Indonesia, saw that I was going to Argentina and tagged a couple of his friends from Hawaii in my instagram photo and said I should meet them because they would be in Argentina too. About an hour later I was walking through the Houston airport and heard, “Hey are you Nate?” It ended up being the two guys from Hawaii, and we all hung out the rest of the 15 hour trip, and continued surfing together and hanging out the whole rest of the trip! So cool to see God clearly and directly answer prayers right before my eyes! Unfortunately In the contest I did not advance out of my Round 2 heat, and ended up 81st of 112 competitors. Not the start I wanted for the contest season, but I am daily surrendering my surfing to God. If I someday end up winning and qualifying for the tour, then Glory to God. And if not, then Glory to God! I am just trying to daily submit to Him and his perfect will for my life. I got to share some of my testimony at a local bible study. It was awesome to meet other believers here in Argentina! I am now headed to California to train in good waves, and reconnect with friends. ND

Braeden Kopec finishes surf season strong! At age 7 Braeden Kopec of Flagler Beach stands 52 inches tall and weighs 55 pounds yet in the ocean his size and age do not stop him from riding waves of all sizes from Flagler Beach to Costa Rica and beyond. This spring Braeden competed in the ESA Southeast Regional Championship and at the NSSA East Coast Surfing Championships. He was the youngest competitor to qualify and compete at both. His competitors were two to four years older. He finished 9th overall in the ESA Regionals and an impressive 7 th overall for the NSSA East Coast Championships. As a result Braeden went to California in June to compete in the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s Championships and in August to North Carolina for the Eastern Surfing Association East Coast Championships. Once again he will be the youngest competitor in the field at both events. His accomplishments, love of the water and overall “stoke” for surfing has earned him recognition from the surf industry. He is a team rider for Quiet Flight Surfboards, DSR: Dive/Surf/Ride apparel, Witch’s Rock Surf Camp Costa Rica, Surf Station Surf Shop and is supported by West Wetsuits. While Braeden has hauled away his share of trophies and awards over the years he does go home empty handed at times. This situation sparked an idea and led to “Braeden’s Annual Super Grom Surf Contest”. This year will be the third year of the friendly informal event and was created by Braeden to reward everyone for their efforts out in the water surfing. While custom made awards are handed out to the finalists, Braeden also hand makes additional prizes for every competitor in the event. His sponsors also fully support the young surfer’s event with apparel and other product to giveaway to all entrants. Braeden’s desire is to see all surfers go home with something in hand and a smile on their face. This month in a recent online surfboard giveaway contest where young surfers wrote letters explaining why they should receive the board Braeden instead wrote his letter about a friend who he thought would benefit from the board more so than he. Braeden’s letter was selected as the winner and his friend will receive a new custom surfboard. The honor roll student also respects the ocean and beaches where he spends most of his free time. Braeden was recognized by the Keepers of the Coast organization for his concern for the environment. For now, and like other kids his age, Braeden is looking forward to summer break. He’s looking to take advantage of the warmer summertime ocean temperatures and just being a kid hanging out on the beach….except this kid may be out in the water and not “on the beach”.

Gordon not only shapes great surfboards but has been a big part of the surfing community. Gordon has run the All Star Surf Camp (formally the Billabong Surf Camp) at Sebastian Inlet for the last 9 years. He is also an ASP judge and continues to traveled all over the United States the Caribbean and Central America to judge surf contests.
Who We Are Christian Surfers is open to everyone; men, women, youth, boys, girls and families who desire to share God’s love through their actions towards surfers. We are an outreach where we care for surfers at the beach, at surf contests and at special events. Although we do surf and have surfers involved you do not need to be a surfer to serve God. Please take a moment to pray for our group and see if you, or any of your friends or family, feel drawn into our mission field. If you have any questions feel free to approach any of the CS guys or gals at the events or e-mail us. Monthly Events We meet each month, either in front of First Peak, at Sebastian Inlet State Park or at contest sites. We arrive at different times according to the tide or contest start times, we set up our tent and coolers and we serve those around us. We either help the contest get set up and broken down or we help beachgoers who are carrying arms full of chairs, umbrellas and coolers. In between we surf, pass out snacks or drinks and CS stuff. Afterwards, we gather for a devotion and discuss upcoming events and opportunities to serve others. Our devotions are very casual and for geared to first timers to Bible scholars. All are welcome to hear God’s word and ask questions like, “What does that have to do with me?”. Special Events We try and pack up the vans and see our local sites. The wave pool in Orlando is obviously a favorite as well as our Summer Surf Jam where we jam as many kids into two vans and travel up coast and camp our way back home while surfing as many breaks a possible. We also serve at the Surf Expo two times a year providing daily coffee and donuts as well as man power on the last day of the show to help the industry pack up after a long week. There are lots of ways to be involved. Yoda Decision making can be one of the hardest things we come across in life, if I do this will I look stupid, or will I hurt someone, or will I get hurt, is there a better opportunity, will I miss out on something better, will this cost me more than I want to give, so we often shy away from making decisions and committing to those decisions through fear of the unknown. We all know how crippling fear can be in its extremes but we often don’t see it creep up, a little compromise, a little bad influence from the world, a little backing away from what God calls us to do and after a while we wonder why it becomes so hard, why we are afraid. Ephesians 4: 1-6 brings great comfort to me when I find myself in a place of fear. Paul says, I beg you to live in a way that is worthy of the people God has chosen to be his own. This can seen like a heavy mantle or weight for us to carry. The people God has chosen to be his own. Paul then talks about some character traits that help us live this out and these are so important, also for us to try and let the Holy Spirit guide us. V6 gives me the great encouragement “there is one God who is the father to all people not only is God above all but he works by using all of us, and he lives in all of us. I encourage you to ponder these words from Ephesians, as you go about life and serving the Lord. Is the spirit of God, that is in you, greater than the fear you may feel about serving him? ASP Enters the Summer Season As the ASP enters the Summer Season , lets check in with our CS chapters across the globe to see how they are serving at these contests. Not only are we blessing them with serving at these events, but it's a huge blessing to us too. We help out at all the "major" events here in J Bay, as well as Cape Town. Billabong Pro Teahuppo We have been an active presence in the Teahupoo WCT over 10 years with Pro Bible Study's and Surf Nights with live music and movies by Walking on Water Partnering with different surf ministry like Eternal Riders and North Shore Christian Fellowship. Hurley Pro The Hurley Pro is the only stop on the US mainland and it is one of the most anticipated events of the year. CSUS sends the West Coast chaplains and the World Tour chaplains to the contest to be available to the surfers during the event.
I have been filming for 10 years now and it all started from the cartoon Rocket Power I watched as a kid. The show was based in California with a group of friends skating, surfing and having fun and their buddy Twister always had a video camera filming everything they did. I saved every penny for months and bought my first camera at 12 years old when I started out filming skateboarding, stunts and some boxing in high school but everything changed when I got my first Gopro at 19 and started filming with my buddy Tyler Rago. We quickly fell in love with making our own films and spent every second filming surfing, action sports and just enjoying life as teenagers in Florida. We had several videos that made local news and went viral on the internet so from there we just ran with it filming every single day making films combining action sports and insane stunts that eventually earned us the name Wild Boys. My big break was meeting Corey Howell in July of 2012 when we made a single video that blew up overnight and lead to our own mini-series, Ron Jon Surf Shop sponsored videos, billboards and after that the rest is history. Today NPI Productions handles videography and photography for anything and everything from professional surfing and free diving to product advertisement, documentaries, weddings, music videos and much more. Our motto is that we will take photo and video of literally ANYTHING and turn it into a multimedia masterpiece sculpted to bringing your vision to life. The future of NPI Productions is limitless as we have plans for full length movies and major network television shows as early as 2015. We have big plans for 2014 as we contracted with Ron Jon Surf Shop and the sponsors of NPI Productions including Lavacore wetsuits, Motivated Eyewear, Slyde Handboards, Fiik Electric Skateboards, Hitcase iPhone housings and more as we travel the world in search of waves and adventure. where do you currently live? I was born in Rio de Janeiro and I live in Rhode Island with my husband, Chuck, and 13year-old twins (Ed and Maria).
How long serving as a surf
chaplain? I started in 2014. When did you start surfing? I started surfing when I was 12 in Ipanema, Rio. I was a competitive tennis player and I trained in 110º weather on clay courts (miserable). One day I missed training to go to the beach and I was hooked.
What surf craft do you ride? Shortboards ranging from 5’6 to 6’1. Step ups and guns ranging from 6’9 to 8’4 (Our garage is full of boards! Come visit).
What is your occupation outside of chaplaincy? I am a homeschool
mom who helps my husband’s business by doing the bookkeeping. Also, I am working on my Master’s to be a Licensed Professional Counselor. attend all the events which the ASP want us at.
What events do you or aim to attend? We plan to What do you do in your role? I plan to simply be
available. I used to be on the ASP tour in the early 90’s and I would love to have had access to someone who is there to support us holistically and not for personal gain. The tour is a vulnerable place to be because people wrongly attach their worth and identity to performance and appearance. I hope and pray I will be able to show the athletes and staff that they are loved by serving them in meaningful and tangible ways.
Who inspires you? Many people inspire me. Mother The-
resa with her selfless giving, Gladys Aylward with her unending perseverance and faith, Amy Carmichael with her devotion to aid those who were destined to an enslaved life. These women, along with Bethany Hamilton (obvious reason), are my inspiration.
What is the best
thing about being a surf chaplain? Being a former pro surfer who went to Bible College and is studying to be a counselor, I believe that being a surf chaplain is an amazing opportunity and blessing because I am combining all my interests and abilities into one endeavor.
What is the biggest challenge for you being a surf chaplain? I have not
started yet, so I am not sure. I am sure I will know this answer more clearly next year. For now, I suppose the challenge will be not being anxious regarding the logistics of all the traveling.

Getting Changed Ephesians 4: 17 - 5: 4 Growing up in a sub tropical location, I never wore a full wetsuit. The first time I did have occasion to surf in a full suit, on a trip to a colder break, it placed restrictions upon my surfing. This unfamiliar suit seemed to be like a rubber suit of armour weighing me down and restricting my movement. Later in life we moved to a colder climate; I thought I should buy a full suit. The neoprene had improved dramatically and I purchased a new zipperless wetsuit. The restricted movement and uncomfortable fit I had experienced in the past was replaced by freedom and flexibility as well as warmth. How could anyone ever wear one of those old wetsuits again? Exchanging old for new changed everything… Ephesians tells us of a similar experience but one far more profound than a new wetsuit. Ephesians 4: 22… put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,… and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God… The exchange here is old for new. Our old life, old nature, old habits, and old master (sin) is exchanged for the New Life, Gods new creation, new habits, new master (Jesus) How is our inner old self changed? Instruct us that is in learning the truth of his Gospel by hearing and being taught truth… This leads to us being renewed in the spirit of your minds. We need to grasp in our minds what Jesus has done for us… Then it will sink into our hearts and spirits and in turn compel our actions and habits. (This is called sanctification) Martin Luther, called it the great exchange… Romans 3:21 - 26 tells us that our sin is exchanged on the cross for the righteousness of Christ… and 2 Corinthians 5: 21 says, For our sake He (God) made Him (Jesus) to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him (Jesus) we might become the righteousness of God. (This is Salvation) the exchange has happened on the cross. Knowing about this is not enough we must ‘Know’ it, live it and let it define us, shape us into Gods new self; people recreated in God’s likeness. Not in our strength but in God’s power.. “How completely satisfying to turn from our limitations to a God who has none.… Without God’s power in our own efforts we exchange the new for the old… Rom 1:22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. We are called to imitate God as loved children, not whip ourselves into shape like good workers like employees, hoping to earn the Boss’s favor… Ephesians 5:1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Why Blank? Like a surfboard, we all begin as a raw blank; scuffed up, yellowed and not so pretty. As the master shaper, God works in us to shape us for His glory and to His plan. We may not know exactly what our final shape will look like, but He is the master shaper and we have to trust in his plan. You may want to be a big wave gun and he may be shaping you into a fish. Why a fish? He has a plan to use you when a wider outline, slightly thicker rail and fuller tail is needed. How well will you work, for His glory, if your outline is for Pipe and you are surfing Ocean Ave.? We will never be glassed. In this shaping bay, the Master Shaper is never finished with us.
