Christian Surfers

Who We Are Christian Surfers is open to everyone; men, women, youth, boys, girls and families who desire to share God’s love through their actions towards surfers. We are an outreach where we care for surfers at the beach, at surf contests and at special events. Although we do surf and have surfers involved you do not need to be a surfer to serve God. Please take a moment to pray for our group and see if the Lord draws you, or any of your friends or family, into our mission field. If you have any questions feel free to approach any of the CS guys or gals at the events or e-mail us. Monthly Events We meet each month, either in front of First Peak, at Sebastian Inlet State Park or at contest sites. We arrive at different times according to the tide or contest start time, we set up our tent and coolers and then we surf, pass out wax, sunscreen, magazines… and just hang out. We gather for a devotion and discuss upcoming events and opportunities to serve. Then we clean up the beach after a long and busy day. Check out the Upcoming Events section, on our website, to see what time and where we meet next. Connect with us on Facebook (Christian Surfers Sebastian Inlet) to stay on top of updates. Special Events We try and pack up the vans and see our local sites. The wave pool in Orlando is obviously a favorite as well as our Summer Surf Jam where we jam as many kids into two vans and travel up coast and camp our way back home while surfing as many breaks a possible. We also serve at the Surf Expo two times a year providing daily coffee and donuts as well as man power on the last day of the show to help the industry pack up after a long week. We serve at National and Regional Contests: ASF Contests, NSSA Southeast Contests, NSSA East Coast Championships, Quiksilver King of the Peak, Gnarly Charley Surf Series, Walking on Water Tour, Rip Curl Grom Search… Get plugged at: www.christiansurferssi.com, www.facebook.com/ChristianSurfersSebastianInlet or e-mail us at cssi@hotmail.com

The more info I can get about a board I made for someone or the one they are currently surfing always helps with future board designs and tweeks... What shapers did you look up to: Everybody.. I started out repairing boards which exposed me to shapers and designs from all over. I still look at what’s going on out there ,and it seems board builders are on the same page as far as board design is concerned.. Most of the way a board will ride is the surfer themselves.... A good surfer/shaper relationship can provide one with properly matched equipment to skill level though... Who has influenced your life the most: My family and happy people. Where You At? Don’t BELIEVE in Jesus All you need to do is believe in Jesus. That’s true… but what do we mean by it? Belief is a funny word. I believe in Jesus. But I also believe that eating too much McDonalds is bad for you. I believe surfing is the best sport in the world. I believe snowboarding is a close second.

I believe in lots of things. So what exactly does ‘believe in Jesus’ mean? Believe he existed? Believe he died for my sins? Believe he rose from the dead? Believe he is the Son of God? Perhaps a more helpful translation is the word ‘faith’. Imagine you’re pushed off a cliff and you’re falling to your death. However as you’re falling, you see a branch about the width of your forearm sticking out of the cliff beneath you. Two scenarios may follow: Scenario 1. You believe in the branch. You believe it is strong enough to hold you. You believe that if you grab hold of the branch it will stop you from falling. You believe that there is no other way to escape hitting the rocks beneath you than by grabbing hold of the branch. And yet in spite of all your correct beliefs about the branch, you enjoy the thrill of falling so much that you never actually grab hold of it and so you fall to your death. Scenario 2. You have faith in the branch. You see the branch, reach out your hand and grab hold of it. The branch saves you.

I know lots of people who believe in Jesus. I know a lot less people that have faith in him. Faith is about action. It’s about grabbing hold of Jesus and putting your trust in him as the only way to be saved. Believing different facts about who Jesus was and why he died is useless if you never actually grab hold of him and trust in him for your salvation.

Going in Circles Does Have Meaning There's a joke among racing detractors that a race is just 40 cars each making a left turn, then another left turn, then another, then...well, you get the idea. But in NASCAR, each lap around the track counts for something and builds toward an eventual finale. Race fans notice the small changes and minor wins/losses with each lap. And drivers know that each lap is crucial because it determines the position for the next lap, and so on. When we feel like each week is just like the last, we can lose sight of how our daily efforts lead us to the next thing, which will then lead us to the next thing, all accumulating into a life well lived. A circular life requires making the most of each moment because of how it fits into the larger scheme.

CSUS Devotion How Would Jesus Surf? HWJS? Or… How Would Jesus Surf? That was the question I was forced to ask myself when some grommet dropped in on me a while back.

“even the wind and the waves obey him”

Well first things first, (Mk. 4:41), and he could walk on water (Mk. 6:48), so it seems to me he has a somewhat unfair advantage! Imagine the barrel time you could get with that combo! But what about his character? What kind of a surfer would Jesus be? 1.What if someone dropped in on him? He’d probably call them onto the next wave that was rightfully his as well! “If someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.” (Mt. 5:40-41) 2. Would he hustle for the best position in the line up? Probably not. I can certainly imagine him getting a couple of rides here and there but my guess is they’d come from the back of the pack and then maybe he’d cop the lucky third in a set as well. “The last will be first, and the first will be last” (Mt. 20:16) 3. Would he glare at every other surfer who paddled by? Probably not. In fact he’d probably be the guy who’s always asking, ‘How’s it going?’, or ‘Get’n a cupple?’ I can even see him befriending the odd tourist a.k.a. Samaritan if you catch my drift. “Be wise in the way you act towards outsiders; make the most of every opportunity” (Col. 4:5) 4. Would he scream in frustration every time he kooked a wave? Probably not. I can imagine him having the self-control not to yell at the top of his lungs as if the wave were responsible for his rookie mistake. “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires” (Jas. 1:19-20) It won’t be easy to surf like Jesus, but as children of God who have his Spirit, I say we give it a go! Gospel of Mark Key Verse: Mark 10:45 “For even the Son on Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Introduction: Mark records the story of the life of Christ and His ministry. Though covering the same time period as the other Gospels, Mark covers the events in a much quicker fashion. His use of words like “immediately” keeps the reader moving from one event to another. This, the shortest of the four Gospels accounts, reveals the servant ministry of Jesus. Without question, the key verse in the gospel of Mark is found near the end of chapter ten: For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45, NIV) The measure of greatness, according to our LORD Jesus, is not the power and influence you exercise over others nor the wealth you accumulate nor the beauty you possess nor the talents you possess. The real measure of greatness is service. Jesus taught the disciples about true greatness in word and then modeled greatness for them in His life. "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers" (1 John 3:16).

Why Blank? Like a surfboard, we all begin as a raw blank; scuffed up, yellowed and not so pretty. As the master shaper, God works in us to shape us for His glory and to His plan. We may not know exactly what our final shape will look like, but He is the master shaper and we have to trust in his plan. You may want to be a big wave gun and he may be shaping you into a fish. Why a fish? He has a plan to use you when a wider outline, slightly thicker rail and fuller tail is needed. How well will you work, for His glory, if your outline is for Pipe and you are surfing Ocean Ave.? We will never be glassed. In this shaping bay, the Master Shaper is never finished with us.
