There is a need to carry medical help, equipment like LCD projector, literature, clothing etc.,. Pray with us as we plan to buy a sturdy four wheeler to meet this need. ** There seems to be some undue delay in executing our proposed project through a Joint-venture in a place called Kallikuppam (about 20 kms from Chennai). We are considering the future work of developing a centre for training rural pastors in this place. Kindly remember this concern your prayers.

WHAT NAKED-EYES DON’T SEE! An average Christian seldom knows or understands about what happens in the spiritual realm. Like atmospheric pressures, there are spiritual forces in the atmosphere. Yes, there are layers or levels of atmospheric forces. In the more rightful spiritual sense, even Paul describes about his “spiritual trip” to the third heaven ( 2 Cor. 12:2). Isn’t this stage he calls as the paradise (v.3)? Now about the Devil, the “super-angel” as called before His fall, also has access to places or people that human mind cannot imagine. The Bible describes Satan as going to the very presence of God and the angels (Job.1:6;2:1). Prof. N.H. Snaith summarizes his role by saying: “He is God’s inspector -of man- on earth and man’s adversary in heaven. It appears that he gives closest attention to human virtue and vice and he is the supreme cynic of the heavenly court. God’s affectionate praise of His servants calls forth the devil’s ugly question (Ps.149:4). Too often, when a person suffers due to the “destructive forces of the atmosphere”, it is interpreted as the result of suffering due to personal sinfulness. Christians, let alone other people, universally stumbled over the inadequacy of human horizons for a proper understanding of the problem of suffering.

MOMENTARY SPIRITUAL MYSTERIES Can anyone prove scientifically the sudden cause that makes the hair in our bodies straighten up for a while? Have you been through a situation when you have felt the “burden” in your soul or when the “touch of the Lord “ was so real that you had gooseflesh/goose pimples? Were there occasions when a sudden burst of the duct from your eyes made the tears just pour out? Or were there times when all other parameters of the organs in our body were in perfect harmony – but then, it was a lighter exhilarating moment when we knew that we were too excited for words when the “Great Someone” had simply filled the otherwise empty vessel in us? These are “momentary” experiences that every child of God who walks closely with Christ may experience from time to time. But this is not at all the foundation for our faith and conduct. The simple, child-like faith of obedience in our daily living is far more commendable than the awe-inspiriting spiritually elated moments.

WORSHIP AT WHAT COST? We need to be able to reach the level of understanding in matters regarding Christian conduct in worship. Worship in the first place entails two entities – the object and subject. First, the Object of worship is God Himself. Second, the worshipper is the subject. If the subject is not subjected to the orderliness in worship, then it is not worship at all. The Fourth and the Fifth chapters of Revelation describes the patters of worship in Heaven. One of the foremost truths we need to recognize in worship is the laying down of our “crowns” (4:10). The twenty four elders are seen by John as falling down before the throne and worshipped God. I have constantly appealed to our brethren in free or Pentecostal churches to get this worship element in right perspective. In the same count, I must fearlessly decry against the dullness of worship in the established churches. Worship is a matter tobe reckoned with spirit and truth. Also in Chapter 5:8, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb and sang a new song. Self-abasement before a holy God is rightly portrayed throughout the scripture. All of the prophets of the Old Testament including Daniel, Ezekiel, Isaiah have all had to fall down when they had the vision of God. Their strength waned and they could not even stand. If this is the pattern found throughout the scripture, why are my brethren everywhere shout aimlessly during worship? Most of them stand and worship, and seldom kneel down. Again, Why do many believers confuse worship with celebration? The people of Israel had special days meant for festivals. Yes, David danced during a festival when the ark of the covenant was brought into the city. But don ‘t we also know those things which David

CHRI“TIAN THOUGHT “ERIE“

VOL 9 I““UE 4

talks about - “ holy trembling,” “being silent” or of “being still” before a Holy God with true reverence for Him? During my recent visit, my pastor friend in Chhattisgarh took his congregation to a crescendo – when loud shrieks and hysteric noises could be heard from among the congregation. The interpretation is that the “Spirit” is descending on them. Everyone knocks at each other, jostling, pushing and pulling! As Paul asks: “Brethren, what is this? Everything must be done in a fitting and orderly way ( 1 Cor.14:40). In worship, being silent is not sin . Of course, it is sin to be dull and dreary! Loudness and a good joyful noise is scriptural. But aimless screaming during worship amounts to blasphemy! All the Churches of Christ must watch out against this folly .

LET US MOVE BEYOND

Dr. Stanley Jones says that the Church is a wonderful institution – a place of worship and spiritual cultivation. But we need to go far beyond – to Christ. Many people connect themselves to a church, a Bible-study group and fail to get through to Christ. )f you are one of those who is observing certain Christian principles – you might end up being religious and ritualistic. But if you turn to the Person of Christ, there you would find friendship, warmth, fellowship and relationship
