s the world and our real estate markets continue to cope with the effects of the pandemic, what can you tell us about the impact that this has had on Christie’s International Real Estate and the way that we are conducting our business? How has Christie’s managed to increase the strength and resiliency of its global real estate network despite these challenges? Had you told me in
March that the network would bounce back with the resiliency it has in the small handful of months since the pandemic started taking hold globally, I would have been highly skeptical. Remarkably, though, our affiliates around the world have demonstrated an incredible resolve to continue operating, and supporting their teams, throughout the crisis, and this is paying real dividends in markets globally. Anecdotally, we know that some are having record months, which in many cases are driving record years. Some of this is driven by the desire of many to either own a second home (and the heightened importance this sentiment now has) or to relocate to places that allow for more personal space. Maybe more importantly is that so many of our affiliates approach their businesses differently from the rest of the brokerage world. As other brands have been pulling back on investment in their businesses and people, many of our affiliates have been recruiting both agents and staff to their teams, investing in their existing and new team members, and using the areas of clear differentiation they possess as members of the Christie’s International Real Estate network to accelerate their organic growth.

“Much continues to evolve in our business, and we remain encouraged and excited about the future of the Christie’s International Real Estate network.”
We are all adapting technologically. Online meeting platforms and other technology have allowed our team to navigate the restrictions on our business remarkably well under the circumstances, allowing us to represent buyers and sellers globally while respecting the obvious need to follow social distancing and other necessary guidelines. At Christie’s, we are using this opportunity to accelerate our digital leadership beyond real estate, focusing on online sales in our other luxury goods and art categories. Our connection to that world, and the clients who invest across the luxury spectrum, continues to be an important point of differentiation for us, and we are maintaining and strengthening the synergies between these businesses. We also continue to enhance tools that support the overall network, including the development with our technology partner of an advanced client relationship management (CRM) system that currently is in the beta testing phase. We are also staying true to our roots as a business built on trusted relationships with multi-generational clients, focusing on the personal side of our business by expanding our Masters Circle of top agents who have demonstrated a mastery of their geographical territories and /or industry segments to further develop industry segment expertise such as ranch and equestrian estate specialization or vineyard estate management and sales among others. Much continues to evolve in our business, and we remain encouraged and excited about the future of the Christie’s International Real Estate network.
What are some community and not for profit initiatives that Christie’s has undertaken as a result of current events? We are focused on a number of important philanthropic efforts within Christie’s and the Christie’s International Real Estate network. It would be impossible to provide a comprehensive list given the breadth of the efforts of our team around the world. Categories where we focus our help include the remediation of physical damage from environmental disasters, including hurricane rebuilding efforts in Puerto Rico and the Bahamas with All Hands and Hearts; the elimination of inequality in our societies, including our efforts on behalf of organizations like The Innocence Project; the support of health care workers, such as early donations of personal protective equipment (PPE) to health care facilities and ongoing support efforts to mitigate the impact of COVID-19; and the support of returning veterans, including our work with One More Wave. There is so much good work going on in the network in so many areas it is impossible to do justice to the level of enthusiasm and commitment around these and other important causes, but I am continually heartened by the selfless commitment shown by our people around the world in this regard.
Over the past several years,we saw many people moving from the suburbs to the city. Are we at the beginning of a reverse trend? There is no question that activity has picked up in the suburbs. As a New York City resident, I see and hear about it almost daily in the tri-state area. People on the fence had plenty of impetus to look for suburban homes after COVID-19 changed the way life in the city is experienced — at least for the moment. For those people with homes in the city, most will stay, but many are thinking much more seriously about the value of tying up capital in a second (or third or fourth…) home. Having an escape seems like less of a luxury and more of a necessity for those that have been deeply, and often very personally, impacted by COVID-19 and have the financial means to purchase something outside of densely populated urban centers. Having said that, I would never count out the city. The world has proved resilient through health crises and terrorist incidents like 9/11, and cities always come back strong. I expect the same for New York, and for other global hubs around the world.
How has Christie’s auction house adapted its business to the current environment — are more auction events taking place virtually? What are some upcoming auction house sales? After a short adjustment period, Christie’s global sales returned this summer with exciting new formats and a more digitally oriented sale environment. We just made auction history with the completion of our successful sale of 20th Century art in our ONE sale. We held a global live auction offering Impressionist and Modern, Post-War and Contemporary Art and Design. It was the first auction of its kind, relayed in sequence using streaming technology from Hong Kong, Paris, London, and New York, and set auction records for Marden, Thiebaud, Condo and more. Interest from important collectors has not waned during the pandemic. And we continue to hold both live and online sales. If you look at the auction calendar today on christies.com, you will see sales focused on magnificent jewels, antiquities, Old Master and British drawings and watercolors, British and European art, Japanese and Korean art, Chinese ceramics and works of art, Indian, Himalayan & Southeast Asian works of art, South Asian modern and contemporary art, Old Master paintings and sculptures, and valuable books and manuscripts — thanks to our global leadership, there’s something for almost everyone!

here’s something about Portugal that gets under your skin in a marvelous way. Until recent years, what the world knew most about this small country bordering Spain and the Atlantic Ocean was its soccer hero, Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the best players of all time. While he might still be the face of the country, the world is catching on to its other secrets and can’t get enough. About the size of Maine, Portugal has excellent food and wine, captivating culture, intriguing art and architecture, fascinating history, welcoming people and affordability. Combined, these are the reasons why it is the perfect recipe for not just one visit, but many happy returns.
Lisbon, Portugal is called Europe’s sunniest city and it is also one of the most striking.

ONE WORD: LISBON Known as the City of seven Hills, the capital of Portugal is a picturesque place bathed in sunlight. Fado music echos down cobblestone streets where bars serve Ginjinha shots — a sweet cherry liqueur — and the nightlife is exciting. Lisbon also boasts beaches, a thriving art scene and world-class restaurants. It’s safe and it has soul. By many accounts, it’s stealing Barcelona’s unofficial designation as Europe’s most alluring capital. (Left) The narrow streets of Lisbon come alive at night with food, music and fun.
FADO Fado is the traditional music of Portugal. It’s moving, even haunting, and experiencing it live in a Fado bar is an essential experience. A kind of reverence falls over the room when the soloist belts out heartfelt lyrics accompanied by guitarists, including a pear-shaped, 12-string Portuguese guitar. It’s simple and beautiful. (Above) Ana Sofia Varela sings Fado, soulful folk music that is a cornerstone of Portuguese culture.
AUTHENTIC APPEAL While more people worldwide are catching on to the ease of travel and diverse offerings in Portugal, the country retains its oldworld charm as a cultural travel experience. Direct flights are available from most major U.S. cities, and comfortable, luxury and uniquely Portuguese accommodations are conveniently situated and readily available. Enjoying regional meals and local wines are a must.

FA S C I N AT I N G HISTORY One of the oldest countries in Europe, Portugal is a treasure trove for history buffs. Home to navigators and explorers who changed the world map, inhabited by Celts, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Muslims, Knights Templar and more, they all left their mark. Discover archaeological sites, monoliths, ornate palaces, churches and mosques and the Roman Temple of Diana. Portugal boasts 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites. (Left) Standing as a tribute to Portugal’s early explorers and navigators, the Monument of Discoveries is located on the Tagus River in Lisbon where ships set sail for India and the Orient during the Portuguese Age of Discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries.
STUNNING ARCHITECTURE Most noted for its striking façades made from glazed blue and white tiles (azulejos), Portugal’s architecture can be dramatic and wide-ranging: Moorish, Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Manueline, to name a few. You’ll find everything from ornate wood carvings in churches and castles to impressive ironwork on Porto’s Maria Pia Bridge, built by Gustave Eiffel.
(Above) Pena Palace in Sintra is said to be one of the best examples of 19th-century romanticism in the world.
WORLD-CLASS WINE The northern city of Porto is the birthplace of port, the worldfamous sweet wine traditionally served after dinner. And the Douro Valley is one of the most picturesque wine regions in the world, with terraced hills resembling an amphitheater along the eponymous river. In the Alentejo region, more vines are planted than in Napa Valley. Here, wine is still aged in clay pots (amphoras) and vino tourism is blossoming. With 11 wine regions and more than 250 grape varieties to discover, the quality is outstanding. (Above) Vines at Cartuxa where wine tourism is getting more sophisticated.
U N PA R A L L E L E D H O S P I TA L I T Y The Portuguese people are some of the most gracious you’ll find. Instead of being inconvenienced by increased numbers of tourists, most go out of their way offering directions, information and advice. It also helps that English is widely spoken. They’re proud of their culture and country, and they want visitors to leave with a bit of it. (Above) English is widely spoken, making it easy to navigate in and around Portugal.

D E S T I N AT I O N B R E AT H TA K I N G BEACHES A significant part of Portugal’s real estate is waterfront. The Atlantic coastline is full of alluring, accessible beaches with unique personalities, whether for sunning or surfing. The most stunning are found in the Algarve. Shaped by the wind and surf for centuries, there are dramatic honeycombed cliffs, caves and grottos. It’s a photographer’s dream. (Left) The beaches in Lagos look like a movie set and are especially fun to explore by boat or kayak.

Some of Portugal’s best discoveries are found in the countryside. The roads are wellmaintained and driving is quite easy, especially with navigation. Meander through forests of cork trees, vineyards and sunflower fields. Stop at hilltop cities such as Monsaraz, historic towns like Evora and Coimbra, or the lighthouses in Sagres, thought to be the end of the earth by Portuguese explorers.
CUISINE Portugal is a foodie’s paradise and, until recently, it has been a well-kept secret. The Portuguese are among the top consumers of seafood in Europe and cod is king. The Portuguese black pork is a legendary dish, especially delicious when cured. Pastel de nata, a custard tart, is considered a national treasure. Regional cuisine rules, but the culinary map is being lit up by an increasing number of creative and innovative chefs. (Above) Fresh, grilled sardines rule the culinary scene during the summer season.

or many looking to invest in their future by purchasing property overseas, Portugal, or more specifically the Algarve region of Portugal, is of major interest. More than a place to visit, the globalized nation is also one of the most desirable places to live and invest in, offering stable returns across diversified property assets. It’s no coincidence that Portugal has also just been elected as the 7th best country in the world to spend one’s retirement, the monthly magazine “International Living” announced. Security, hospitality, landscape beauty, historical heritage, cultural offerings and low cost of living are the factors that contribute most to the distinction. A new ranking, just released by the publication “Life and Investment Overseas,” puts the focus on the Algarve, in the southern region of the country. Ricardo Costa, CEO of LUXIMO’S Christie’s Real Estate, explains that “expats who come to work in Portugal choose cities such as Porto or Lisbon, while pensioners have a clear preference for the Algarve.” He explains why: “In addition to safety, our international clients are delighted by the mild climate, the security, and internationally recognized golf courses.” He also comments that the “excellent value for money in the southernmost region of mainland Portugal” contributes to the Algarve being the place of choice for the purchase of a residence or holiday home. Portugal’s second city, Porto has long been a holiday favorite, and the last five years have seen it gain increasing attention from investors, too. Costa points out that recently “Forbes selected the six best cities in Europe to invest in 2020. Only one Portuguese city appears on that list — Porto.” Quality of life, safety, tourism development (Porto won the European Best Destination Award three times — 2012, 2014 and 2017) and the prosperity of the economy, together with multinational companies and startups that choose the city in the north of Portugal for their establishment, are just some of the reasons given by Forbes Magazine for its selection. Portugal offers a buoyant and well-developed real estate market, with quality and design in line with the highest European standards and a wide choice of properties at attractive prices. In Portugal, expats can live a comfortable life for about $2,500 a month. More Americans are doing just that.

ow more than ever, close-to-home getaways have powerful appeal — and no one has a better choice of big city “staycation” options than residents of the tri-state. Within an easy drive, you can take your pick of some of the world’s most glamorous boutique hotels. Whether you’re longing for a weekend of shopping in Soho, drinks and dining in Lower Manhattan, or Broadway matinees in Midtown, you’ll find a boutique hotel to call home among these eight beauties. Best of all, these staycations sacrifice nothing when it comes to world-class style and sophistication. Rates vary widely, depending on date of arrival, and are based on a one-night, midweek stay. Contact the hotels for current room rates, and the status of available services and amenities.
MIDTOWN
Nearby: New York Public Library, Grand Central Station and Bryant Park Rates from: $359 Best for: Book lovers and literary luminaries With 60 guest rooms spanning 10 floors (each corresponding to a major category of the Dewey Decimal System), the Library Hotel is a cozy boutique retreat with a soft spot for bookworms. Every room is stocked with 50 to 150 books, making it easy to find a juicy (or dry) bedtime read. In the morning, guests gather in the Reading Room for complimentary continental breakfast, then wind down over wine and cheese every evening. By day, the rooftop Writer’s Den and Poetry Garden are tranquil spots to thumb through the pages of a favorite book; every evening, they become the Bookmarks Lounge, an aptly named spot for drinks like The Pulitzer and Tequila Mockingbird.

UPPER EAST SIDE Nearby: Central Park, Madison Avenue Rates from: $850 Best for: City Explorers A landmark on the Upper East Side, The Lowell reigns as one of Manhattan’s most sophisticated and timelessly elegant boutique hotels. Part of its appeal is a staff that knows how to open doors. Tickets to Broadway, a table for two at Daniel, an after-hours museum tour — they’re all in a day’s work for The Lowell’s well-connected team. Seventy-four sunlit guest rooms and suites are chic and stylish, thanks to cozy cashmere throws, Frette bed linens, miles of white marble and polished oak, and gourmet goodies from Dean & Deluca. Many have full kitchens, outdoor terraces, and wood-burning fireplaces complete with scented firewood menus.
TRIBECA
Nearby: 9/11 Memorial, One World Trade Center Rates from: $365 Best for: Music lovers and movie buffs Once the Tribeca Grand, the 201-room Roxy is still instantly recognizable, thanks to its vintage movie theater marquee façade. Indoors, a welcome glass of champagne and access to the Art Deco-glam cinema/screening room in the basement set the stage for a memorable stay. The Roxy takes guest comfort in quirky new directions. After all, what’s more comforting than an in-room pet goldfish and a TEAC turntable with a curated collection of vinyl?
SOHO
Nearby: Little Italy, Chinatown, MoMA design store Rates from: $695 Best for: Art lovers and fans of film The 86-room Crosby Street Hotel is lavish but, luckily, this boutique gem never too seriously. Just ask the feline at the front door. Crosby The Cat, a 12-foot bronze sculpture at the hotel’s entrance on cobblestoned Crosby Street is a whimsical nod to what’s in store. Credit goes to Kit Kemp, the mastermind behind the hotel’s interiors, including its diverse collection of artwork (incredible even by Soho standards), 99-seat private cinema, and cozy gathering spaces, including a lush and leafy outdoor terrace that beckons those in the mood for afternoon tea or a summertime cocktail.
TIMES SQUARE/MIDTOWN Nearby: Broadway theaters, Bryant Park Rates from: $377 Best for: Theater-goers Taking its design cues from one of history’s most beloved and romantic films, the Casablanca Hotel is a Moroccan-inspired retreat just steps from the 24/7 energy of Times Square. With just 48 rooms, this intimate boutique hotel charms guests with an unexpected array of amenities, including complimentary wine and cheese receptions every evening and a continental breakfast buffet every morning in Rick’s Cafe, naturally. There’s also round-the-clock coffee, tea and cookies, and room service from perennial Italian favorite Tony’s Di Napoli next door.

FINANCIAL DISTRICT Nearby: City Hall, Brooklyn Bridge, South Street Seaport Rates from: $541 Best for: Foodies Ranked the #1 hotel in New York City on Conde Nast Traveler magazine’s prestigious Gold List, The Beekman debuted in 2016 and quickly took its place as both a landmark of style and standard-bearer of gracious hospitality in Lower Manhattan. With an interior so stunning it warranted the cover of Travel + Leisure, the 287-room hotel is both stylishly eccentric and unabashedly luxurious. Foodies are in good hands here, thanks to restaurants helmed by superstar chef-restaurateurs Keith McNally and Tom Colicchio.
SOHO
Nearby: Tribeca, Canal Street Rates from: $409 Best for: Dog lovers and celebrities Steps from Soho’s world-class art galleries and stylish boutiques, the SoHo Grand Hotel wrote the rulebook on downtown boutique hotel luxury. With 355 rooms and suites, it pushes the boundary of “boutique hotel” but with a dog-friendly policy that includes — gratis — organic dog food, plush dog beds, and a private dog park complete with fire hydrants (not to mention no size or weight restrictions), who’s counting? For the ultimate getaway, book one of the hotel’s corner guest rooms, complete with a furnished 600-square-foot outdoor terrace overlooking downtown.
TRIBECA
“For fans of architecture, history and design, The Beekman has been a source of fascination for over a century. The building itself is like a love letter to NY, and in many ways transformed the cultural landscape of Lower Manhattan.”
26
Nearby: Soho, Hudson River Greenway, Battery Park Rates from: $650 Best for: Privacy-seeking celebrities and Hollywood royalty As if it’s been transported brick-by-weathered-brick from Tuscany, Tribeca’s Greenwich Hotel is, in fact, the handiwork of Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro, whose other neighborhood credits include the Tribeca Film Festival, Nobu and Tribeca Grill. Here, 88 spacious guest rooms, including a dozen suites and one out-of-this-world penthouse, are serene retreats far from NYC’s 24/7 bustle. Butler-trained staff, an on-site spa, and home-style Italian cooking ensure a flawless stay. Don’t miss the underground pool, beautifully tucked beneath a centuries-old bamboo roof lit by lanterns.

urveying the seemingly endless patchwork of rolling fields and picturesque woodland that stretches out around the handsome, plantation-style house at the center of Stonewall Farm, it’s almost impossible to believe that the hustle and bustle of Manhattan is less than an hour’s drive away. Hop in a helicopter and that journey time is reduced to a mere 15 minutes, which is just one of the reasons why this 740-acre estate in the sought-after county of Westchester is unique. “It’s unheard of to come across this kind of property in such close proximity to New York City,” says Kathleen Coumou, executive director,

broker of record at Christie’s International Real Estate. “If you were looking for that kind of acreage, you’d usually have to go at least an hour or two further north, and even then, it would be a challenge to find.” But a prime location isn’t the only thing that makes this breathtaking domain unique. The largest privately owned estate in Westchester County — the Rockefeller Estate in Pocantico Hills aside — Stonewall Farm has over the past 40 years been expanded and developed by its owners and is now a world-class equestrian facility dedicated to raising championship thoroughbreds. Within the superbly maintained grounds, reminiscent of the landscapes of Kentucky’s bluegrass country, is a turf racetrack

Add to that professional racing facilities, among them a 40-stall yearling barn, two 24-stall broodmare barns, round pens, paddocks, and pastures with run-in sheds, and it’s easy to see how the estate — just an hour from Belmont Park racetrack — has produced winners of 40 stakes races, several of which have run in the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders’ Cup. At the very heart of this offering, perched high on a ridge, sits a four-story, Colonial-style manor house. Designed in 2004 by New York-based architect Rebecca Rasmussen, the 24,000-squarefoot home features an elegant clapboard façade and is topped with a smart slate roof salvaged from Yale Divinity School in New Haven, Connecticut. Inside, the classic yet contemporary interior is the work of world-renowned interior designer Kelly Hoppen. Styled with her signature East-meets-West aesthetic, the ambience is warm, inviting, and almost Zen-like in its calm. “The owners helped choose every detail and the home has been put together with utter care, making it

really liveable and enjoyable to be in,” says David B. Sanders, listing agent and Director of Luxury Marketing at Christie’s International Real Estate Westchester and Hudson Valley. “It strikes a unique balance between formal and comfortable; it is big, but unbelievably cozy.” Enhancing this sense of serenity is a fluid layout where the front hall gently segues into the elegant reception areas. Double-height windows flood the two-story sitting room with sunlight, while the formal dining room connects to a generous gourmet kitchen with a center island and breakfast bar, and a fully equipped butler’s pantry. Another highlight of this expansive build is the spectacular, two-story library, where the mezzanine is accessed by a spiral staircase, and the fireplace and floors are clad in saddleleather tiles in homage to the owner’s equestrian lifestyle. This stylish surface can also be found in the adjacent office and in the elevator. On the lower level is a 2,200-bottle wine cellar, as well as a tasting room, a games room, and even a pub. Also of note is a sunlit salon with

Upstairs, eight spacious bedrooms and eight full baths feature sumptuous textiles and thoughtful finishing touches, while the third-floor master suite is a tranquil, private sanctuary with a Japaneseinspired indoor garden, and a limestone bath complete with a lavish soaking tub. Move outside and the charming French gardens designed by notable landscape architect Edmund D. Hollander are defined by geometric boxwood and laurel hedges and peppered with fragrant lavender, while a wisteria-draped pergola walkway leads to the impressive 4,000-square-foot pavilion-style pool house. Home to a 60-foot pool and spa plus a gym, sauna, and changing rooms, there is also a comfortable lounge area, a kitchen, and a courtyard for alfresco dining. Further beyond lie tranquil Japanese gardens with a koi pond and a butterfly house, as well as apple orchards and shady pools surrounded by weeping willows. Auxiliary buildings include a guesthouse, eight staff residences, and a caretaker’s residence, plus several garages and an original stone spring house that taps an aquifer, supplying hundreds of gallons of crystal-clear water every day. All reasons why Stonewall Farm is indeed an absolute rarity. “Since the owners acquired this property, it’s been an ongoing love affair,” notes Sanders. “Each one has been as passionate as the other about the estate, and they created something not just for themselves but for the people who work here. It’s about the horses, the people, and the lifestyle, and it has enormous potential.” Claudia Baillie is the editor of Elle Decoration Country. he House of Cartier was founded in 1847 when the 28-year-old Louis-François Cartier took over a shop at 29 rue Montorgueil in Paris. His son Alfred took control of the company in 1874, by which time it already had an excellent reputation. However, it was Alfred’s three sons — Louis, Pierre and Jacques — who would go on to establish Cartier as a world-famous jewelry brand. While Louis retained the responsibility for Paris, in 1902 Jacques went to London and only two years later received the

Royal Warrant, thereby supplying jewelry to King Edward VII and his court. Pierre traveled to New York where, in 1917, he famously acquired 653 Fifth Avenue for two strands of the very finest pearls. This piece of prime real estate remains a flagship store to this day. Since then, the Maison has expanded globally, becoming what many consider to be the finest jewelry house in the world. Its clientele has encompassed royalty, film stars and business tycoons. King Farouk of Egypt, The Duchess of Windsor, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and Clark Gable all made their way to Cartier to buy or have their jewelry made.

Pavé-set with brilliant-cut diamonds interspersed with buff-top sapphire ‘spots,’ pearshaped emerald eyes and onyx nose detail, 6.4cm. Sold for approximately $97,500 on June 13, 2017 at Christie’s in London. It was valued from $1 million to $1.9 million.
The famous Cartier ‘three-ring’ made its first appearance almost 100 years ago, in 1924, during the Art Deco craze. It was designed by Jean Cocteau, the French writer, painter, filmmaker and poet, who was a great friend of Louis Cartier. The simplicity of the three interlocking rings, each of a different gold color, quickly became a classic. It seemed appropriate that this ring, which supposedly symbolized friendship, fidelity and love, should be a favorite among jewelry collectors. It is also to be noted that the technicality of the ‘Trinity’ models, as simple as it may look, is an incredible feat, allowing the three bands to slide smoothly over the skin.
In 1914 the first ‘Great Cat’ motif entered the Cartier family by means of an onyx-spotted panther pattern wristwatch created by the famous French designer Charles Jacqueau. Through the years, the initial pattern has evolved to fully sculptured animals, and the array of cats has widened to include the striped tiger as well as the panther. Promoted to Director of High Jewelry at Cartier in 1933, Jeanne Toussaint, a feline-lover who was nicknamed ‘The Panther’ by Louis Cartier and her colleagues, immediately took the responsibility for supervising the ‘Great Cat’ designs. Together with the outstanding creativity of designer Peter Lemarchand, she produced a variety of
Cartier has always been at the forefront of change and innovation. Jacques Cartier first visited India in 1911 and, through his buying agents in Delhi, Calcutta and Bombay, managed to acquire Indian rubies, sapphires and emeralds, carved with floral motifs, at modest prices. The workshops in Paris assimilated Indian designs into a new style of multi-gem jewels, far removed from the typical severity of purely diamondbased Art Deco jewels, and that would be known by the name of ‘Tutti Frutti’ style. The genre reached its crescendo with a stunning piece, the ‘Hindu necklace,’ which was commissioned in 1936 by the heiress to the Singer sewing machine company, Daisy Fellowes.

jewels which forever immortalized the feline motif within the context of Cartier design. After the first threedimensional panther was created in 1948 for the Duchess of Windsor, famous Cartier clients regularly fell in love with the jewels. Daisy Fellowes and Nina Dyer, for example, both appropriated this new look. American heiress Barbara Hutton, notable style rival of the Duchess of Windsor, was also famous for her preference for Jeanne Toussaint’s tiger menagerie. During these hundred years of design, the iconic Cartier cats have gone through multiple variations. But they are still considered today as a must-have for jewelry collectors. New designs from the 1980s and 1990s have only furthered the demand for these rare and spectacular jewels.

CARTIER & CHRISTIE’S
Aldo Cipullo joined Cartier, New York, in 1969 after serving an apprenticeship in his native Italy, and later at David Webb. Within two years he had created two of the most iconic Cartier designs: the ‘Love’ and the ‘Juste un Clou’ — minimalist, whimsical and ingenious. The ‘Love’ bracelet, a band in two sections, has to be screwed together with the aid of a screwdriver — provided by Cartier of course. Once in a place, the bracelet is not to be removed! In a brilliant marketing move, Cartier made the decision to gift his-and-her love bracelets to the most famous couples of the era, including Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw. A symbol as strong as the eternity ring itself, the ‘Love’ bracelet has been, for more than 40 years, a token of love and attachment.
What’s not to love when you combine incredible craftsmanship, timeless design and a bit of magic? Very much inspired by the Magic Clocks of famous 19th-century illusionist Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin, Maurice Couët, a young clockmaker at Cartier, astonished the industry by exploiting the same illusion, but in a traditional clockmaking way, creating the first-ever ‘Mystery clock’, named ‘Model A’, for the Maison in 1913. Hands ‘floating’, no mechanism to be seen, the magic trick of these clocks fascinated Cartier clients and sales staff alike. The Mystery clocks created by Cartier during the Art Deco period blend exquisite craftsmanship, elegant design and the most technologically advanced mechanisms, resulting in works that continue to entertain and mesmerize the observer with their illusion and beauty.
King Edward VII of England used to refer to Cartier as ‘the jeweler of kings and the king of jewelers.’ This reputation was such that at the coronation of King George V in June 1911, 19 of the tiaras worn at the ceremony were by Cartier. From Spain to England, Belgium to Russia, India to Siam, kings and queens around the world made Cartier their official supplier of royal jewelry. Socialites and movie stars followed suit and Merle Oberon, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly and Gloria Swanson were all great collectors of Cartier jewelry. Even the most discerning of diamond collectors

would go to Cartier to have them mounted. Such was the case of Salomon Barnato Joel, who had made his fortune in the South African diamond mines, being the director of Barnato Brothers as well as De Beers Consolidated. In 1912, he asked Cartier to mount four of his best diamonds. Cartier created an outstanding stomacher or devant-de-corsage brooch, so fashionable during the Belle Epoque. Designed around a central pear-shaped diamond of more than 34 carats, two navetteshaped diamonds and a heart-shaped diamond, this devant-de-corsage is a great example of the subtle and delicate ‘Lily-of-the-Valley’ setting used by Cartier around 1910 and mastered by their famous workshop ‘Atelier Henri Picq’ in Paris. Up to this day, Cartier remains a favorite among great jewelry collectors and royal families. As an example, Catherine Middleton, now Duchess of Cambridge, chose to wear the Cartier Halo diamond tiara for her wedding to Prince William in 2011.

WESTWOOD ‘Hub of the Pascack Valley’ combines city style, suburban living WRITTEN BY JOSEPH R ITAC C O PHOTOG RAPHY BY CARL SU , JEF F R EY STECCATO, J AM ES E MOLO AN D PR OVI D ED B Y M AYOR R AYM O N D ARROYO

he once rural outpost known as Westwood has transformed during its century and a quarter of existence into the “hub of the Pascack Valley,” a vibrant, family-friendly suburban community with a bustling downtown business district. Present-day government officials, business leaders and residents, however, are hardly willing to let the borough rest on the laurels of its storied history. “Westwood’s future,” said Mayor Raymond Arroyo, “is as bright as its past.” Through the years, the borough has retained small-town virtues and a strong volunteer culture, evidenced by its volunteer fire department and volunteer ambulance corps, award-winning recreational department, premier public library and engaged chamber of commerce. “Westwood’s ‘secret sauce’ begins with great people,” Arroyo said. “Residents serve on myriad volunteer boards and commissions and are actively involved in improving and preserving our community. We have many four- and five-generation families in Westwood. Many young adults who leave for college or work often return to raise families in the way they were raised, in the place that enabled it.” Some of Westwood’s most revered educators, Arroyo added, have touched the lives of successive generations. The Westwood Regional School District includes Westwood Regional Middle School and Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School, both shared with neighboring Washington Township, as well as four elementary schools. The recent influx of young families into Westwood has positively impacted the local school system, said Vyacheslav “Slava” Zborovsky, broker/manager of Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey’s

Pascack Valley Regional Sales Gallery, which opened its doors in Westwood in October 2019. “Westwood is going through a transition with younger families moving in and school budgets now passing,” said Zborovsky. “Young parents are being very proactive in the school district.” Zborovsky said the recent addition of a Christie’s office to the Pascack Valley area will benefit clients because of the brand’s superior customer service and marketing. Ilija Pavlovic, president/CEO of Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey, added, “We are very excited to welcome Slava and his team to our Christie’s family. With their longterm presence in Pascack Valley, they have built a stellar reputation as leaders in professionalism and customer dedication and have a proven track record to back that up. We are confident that their talented group of agents will help us expand the delivery of the unique Christie’s experience to this area of northern New Jersey.” Prospective buyers will find a diverse housing stock in Westwood that includes elegant historic homes in the Goodwin Park area and an abundance of ranches, split-levels, Cape Cods and smaller colonials. “There’s affordability in Westwood, with homes ranging from $400,000 to $800,000,” said Zborovsky. “It’s viewed as a sister to Ridgewood, with the same styles of homes and retail centers, commuters to and from New York City via bus and train, and walkability in the downtown area.” Convenient commuter access has long been a staple of Westwood, and a major selling point.

The community is served by NJ Transit at the Westwood Train Station, located at Broadway and Westwood Avenue. One of Westwood’s landmarks, the train station opened in the 1870s as part of the New Jersey and New York Railroad, and was later rebuilt in 1932. Earlier this year, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior. The train station is home to the Westwood Heritage Society, which utilizes space in the former baggage and ticketing area to teach residents about borough history. James Gines, who serves as an officer and past president of the Heritage Society, said, “It’s a volunteer group that recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. We store our archives in the train station and have rotating monthly displays appropriate to the time of year.” Shortly after the train station was built, small hotels, factories and shops sprang up, creating a vibrant downtown in a region dominated by farmland. Presently, Westwood’s downtown area runs along Broadway, Westwood Avenue and Center Avenue, and features “a variety of retail and services businesses, including banks, restaurants, a movie theater and diverse personal services,” said Arroyo. Among Westwood’s oldest businesses is Conrad’s Confectionery on Westwood Avenue, offering homemade treats since 1928. J.J. Krachtus, a third-generation owner of the family business, recalled making ice cream as an 11-year-old and spending his spring breaks packing chocolate Easter bunnies. He said the

success of Westwood’s downtown business district is two-fold. “The biggest reason the downtown area is so successful is its look and feel,” said Krachtus. “The area is like a Norman Rockwell painting — whoever designed it was spot on. Also, landlords and business owners have fostered strong relationships with the local community.” Krachtus lived in Westwood from early childhood through his mid30s, has been associated with the Westwood Chamber of Commerce on and off for the past 15 years and plans to soon move back to the borough. Among his favorite Westwood locations is Irish pub P.J. Finnegan’s, where a picture of his grandfather playing high school football hangs on the wall. “It’s fun to walk in and see that,” he said. Mike Fitzsimmons, secretary and past president of the Westwood Chamber of Commerce and owner of Westwood Art Gallery on Westwood Avenue, said the popularity of the downtown area is a credit to the original developers. “Unlike other main roads in North Jersey that run north and south, our downtown corridor runs east and west, with a lot of mixed-use residences not only in Westwood, but Emerson and Park Ridge, too,” he said. “The result is you have twoor three-story buildings that give the area a city feel with a walkable downtown. People come to town for one specific merchant, but discover many different ones.” In recent years, Fitzsimmons said, Chamber events have been more entertainment-oriented, with Oktoberfest and Taste of Westwood among the most popular. The most anticipated event of the year remains Westwood’s “Home for the Holidays” parade, which draws local marching bands and includes tree and candle lightings and a visit from Santa Claus. “When I first opened Westwood Art Gallery in 1999, a volunteer from the Chamber came in and

That’s the type of community Westwood is — merchants are conscious of giving back. I don’t know many at all who say no. That’s the big difference with brickand-mortar stores in a small town like Westwood.” Projects of note for 2020, said Arroyo, include continued efforts to bring an app-based commuter bus company to Westwood, and the addition of another parking lot at Center Square, which features Farmhouse Café & Eatery, Kimchi Smoke Barbecue and Hanami Restaurant. elissa Rubenstein, the team lead for the Rubenstein Property Group at Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey’s Ridgewood office, was a practicing real estate lawyer at two prestigious New York City-based law firms. She transitioned her love of real estate into a fast-paced career selling new construction condominiums in Manhattan, even appearing in an episode of the hit reality TV show Selling New York. Rubenstein has been selling real estate for ten years. “I initially became a lawyer to be an advocate for people, and I ended up representing corporations. The best decision I have ever made was taking my attorney background and applying it to real estate. I have been able to take my advocacy training and extensive contract negotiation experience and use it on behalf of individuals; the personal contact and resulting relationships have been very rewarding. I enjoy helping my clients.” Licensed in both New Jersey and New York, Rubenstein is passionate about helping young families make the leap from the city to the suburbs, and she draws on this client base to help sellers find the most-qualified buyers. Her geographical area of expertise is northwest Bergen County and the Pascack Valley. Rubenstein has earned several prestigious awards since embarking upon her real estate career in New Jersey, including the Top Realtor Award from Bergen Magazine twice and the NJ Realtors® Circle of Excellence Sales Award® in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Rubenstein lives in Wyckoff with her husband and two young children; she is well-versed in the schools, communities and details of life in the county and surrounding region. She is also an active volunteer and leader of the community. In 2017, Rubenstein was the second woman ever elected to the Wyckoff Township Committee. She serves as a committeewoman, director of the Finance Committee, and as the fire commissioner of Wyckoff. She has also been treasurer of the Wyckoff Newcomers and Neighbors’ Club and been involved in the Community Service Committee of the Greater Bergen Association of Realtors.

artin NcNicholas has spent his entire career mentoring others, starting with his students early on as a biology teacher in New Milford and today as a vice president at Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey. Coming on board Christie’s last fall with over 40 years in the real estate industry and broad management experience, Marty has created individualized coaching and training programs for new or recently hired agents at their training offices in Mahwah. “The most important people at Christie’s are the sales people,” he says. “They are the ones taking the listings, making the sales, working weekends and generating revenue. My whole focus is to do the best I can to help them become even more successful, it’s a good fit for me.” With a passion for developing broker and Realtor associates, Marty has transformed them into top-earning agents and branch managers. In his four decades, he has opened, developed and grown a number of real estate offices in New York State and New Jersey. The Eagle Program he created for agents and brokers at Christie’s focuses on skills training and learning how to develop better business habits. “When people come into real estate, often they don’t see that in many ways they’re going into business for themselves,” he says. “So that business has to be run in an organized fashion with an effective business plan brought about with proper support and proper training.” The
48
program runs for 12 weeks, the length of time it takes to develop a good habit, he says. “I named it after the eagle because they are very solitary animals, but at the top of the food chain,” he says. “If you’re going to be successful at real estate there has to be a part of you that has that independence.” Marty meets with the agents individually and helps develop a system that works for them, with frequent follow-up calls and meetings. “Skills training is also important,” he says. “Even basics like how to price a house needs to be learned and practiced,” he says. While he has only been at Christie’s for less than a year, Marty has seen even top earners benefit from his expertise: “Sometimes it’s just a small thing they don’t see they are doing that needs to be changed and I can help with that.” Marty is a member of the Greater Bergen Association of Realtors, the New
Jersey Realtors Association, the New Jersey Multiple Listing Service and the Garden State Marty McNicholas Multiple Listing Service. “I like being in a business where the amount of money you make is based on how hard you work and how talented you are,” he says. That was what drew him into real estate and now, mentoring agents is what keeps him there. Marty has been a Bergen County resident all his life, growing up in North Arlington and currently living in Ramsey with his wife. Much of their free time is spent with grandchildren and in the garden. “Gardening is our number one activity at home and at our beach house, it’s what we enjoy doing together,” he says.

s part of its ongoing growth and expansion, Christie’s International Real Estate Westchester and Hudson Valley recently announced the addition of Louise Colonna, a highly successful regional real estate leader, as broker of record. She will also manage the company’s New City, NY, branch location. Colonna described her new role as a “liaison” between her agents, the Hudson Gateway Association of Realtors and the public. She is a licensed associate real estate broker with more than 30 years of industry experience in sales and management. She began her real estate career as a sales associate and later received her associate broker’s license before successfully transitioning into management roles. “As a licensed agent I was boots on the ground, so I can relate to agents not just from a managerial point of view,” said Colonna. “I sold real estate when the market was high and when it crashed, and grew a start-up office that earned national recognition. I’ve seen it all.” As broker of record at Christie’s International Real Estate Westchester and Hudson Valley, Colonna will focus on building up the office and helping agents grow their careers. “I look forward to getting to know the agents, learning of their goals and helping them reach them,” she said. “As a manager, I’ve always taken great pride in my agents’ accomplishments. I see my success through others. My role is to be a coach and mentor who helps agents, not just manages an office.” Ilija Pavlovic, president and CEO of Christie’s International Real Estate Westchester and Hudson Valley, said, “We are very excited to welcome Louise to our family. As we continue to expand our presence and strengthen our service across the region, we are always looking for experienced and qualified individuals to join our team. Louise’s proven record of success is further assurance that our customers will continue to receive the unique Christie’s experience.” Colonna added that joining Christie’s gives her “the opportunity to deliver the highest level of customer service available in our industry and the power of the Christie’s brand to clients across the region.”

he interests of the clients always come first for Team Braconi, as Team Leader Stephen Braconi has assembled a group of real estate professionals who provide service not only rooted in knowledge and experience but, more importantly, ethics and honesty. “I can teach team members how to write contracts, but I can’t teach them those qualities,” Braconi said. Team Braconi is bringing its impressive credentials to Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey, which Braconi described as the “premier luxury brand” in the United States and beyond. “Geographically, we’re beginning to expand,” he said. “Our team covers all of North Jersey and we also have two agents licensed in New York State. As Christie’s continues to expand, so will we.” Ilija Pavlovic, president and CEO of Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey, said, “The addition of Team Braconi to Christie’s Real Estate Northern New Jersey brings a higher level of assurance that clients throughout our market areas can access the most qualified agents in our industry. Team Braconi offers a unique perspective in residential sales, rentals and commercial to both our suburban and metropolitan clientele.” Stephen Braconi leads a growing team that includes Michael Filippelli, Jeffrey Spector, Alfredo Vastola, Carol Mancuso, Stacey Shook, Nicholas Larson, Gennifer Stribling, Steven Gardenier, Michael Donohue and James Ristagno. Upon joining Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey in July, team members have occupied company offices in Franklin Lakes, Mahwah and Hoboken, and maintained a strong presence in the New Jersey Hudson River waterfront towns known as the Gold Coast. “Our team has a strong presence on the Gold Coast,” said
Braconi, a top-producing agent in the Gold Coast community of Edgewater. “Our clients often sell from the Gold Coast and move to the North Jersey suburbs for more space and top-notch school systems. Our team specializes in higher-end luxury townhomes and condos, as well as single-family residences in prestigious North Jersey suburbs.” Braconi brings an impressive list of accolades with him to Christie’s. REAL Trends consulting, which has completed more than 3,500 valuations, brokered the sale of over 760 residential real estate firms and performed some 470 company assessments, recognized Braconi among the top 0.1 percent of real estate agents nationwide and listed him in the top 1,000 of approximately 1.5 million agents in the United States in 2019. The organization also listed Team Braconi among its Best Teams in America. A graduate of the University of Rhode Island with a degree in business management, Braconi began his career as a venture capitalist specializing in start-up ventures. True to form, he built his real estate career from the ground up, working seven days a week for as many as 16 hours a day before reaching a crossroads moment. “I was a one-man show for the first 10 years of my career, so I had to make a choice,” he said. “Do I get help even if it means giving up some commissions?” Ultimately, he decided to form a team that has become a prolific force in the local real estate industry. “We have a system in place for our buyers and sellers,” said Braconi. “We’ve done it 2,000 times. Because of our volume of sales, we don’t need any one sale – we’re not interested in just getting a quick sale. We’re interested in building relationships.” Outside the office, Braconi spends much of his time with his wife, three children (two daughters and a son), and two dogs. He also volunteers his time at the Bergen County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and teaches children’s jiu-jitsu. Stephen Braconi

and gaining exposure to new opportunities?” Among his areas of emphasis are creating business plans, recruiting and marketing, with a focus on social media integration. “We all need to be on it,” he said. A former agent, Ristovic acknowledges the scope of the real estate industry can be overwhelming, making it necessary to develop plans and set specific goals. He also stresses the importance of communication and schedules weekly meetings with all agents. “There’s no magic to this,” he said. “You have to hustle and create opportunities.” A highly successful regional real estate leader, Ristovic has worked in the industry for seven years with strong management experience. He specializes in real estate coaching, agent marketing and social media advertising. He has earned several NJ Realtors® Circle of Excellence awards and the President’s Club Management Award in recognition of his superior skills and performance. It is the success of others, however, that inspires him the most. “My true enjoyment is watching my agents grow and helping them reach their goals,” said Ristovic. He added that his efforts are buoyed by the “history and pedigree” of the Christie’s brand. “Joining the Christie’s team gives me the opportunity to deliver the highest level of customer service available in our industry and the power of the Christie’s brand to clients across the region,” he said. Outside the office, Ristovic enjoys being a full-time dad to his daughter Liana, born in March. s the arrival of COVID-19 brought the region to a screeching halt last spring and forced residents to shelter in place, Judith Marciano, a recent addition to Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey’s Hoboken Sales Gallery as a broker associate, drew inspiration from a couple to whom she recently sold a Jersey City residence. “When everyone was isolating,” recalled Marciano, “this couple was posting photos of their new place on social media and it made me so happy. We explored all options and took our time until we found the right place for them.” The success story is one of many for Marciano, who joined the real estate industry after a distinguished career in the fashion industry, including 12 years spent as the vice president of international sales for Donna Karan. Buoyed by her experience in the corporate world, inspired by her mother-in-law, a veteran of the real estate industry, and her husband, a real estate attorney, Marciano has made the transition to real estate a seamless one. “For years my husband would talk about closings and I’d talk about the fashion industry,” she joked. “Now I know what he meant.” A long-time Hoboken resident, she does a lot of business on the Hoboken waterfront, as well as the neighboring communities of Jersey City and Weehawken. “It’s a neighborhood feeling here,” said Marciano. “I have two little dogs and when I walk them I always see clients, many of whom have become friends. It’s important that I live and work in the
58
same community as my clients and it has resulted in lots of referrals.” Among the benefits of living in Hoboken, she added, are the waterfront, proximity to New York and great restaurants and cafés. In the wake of COVID-19, Marciano has also seen her business expand into the suburbs as some clients have opted to leave the more crowded urban areas. Regardless of location, it is her goal to provide top-notch service to all clients, adding that her clients’ wants and desires are “paramount” in every transaction. “I’ve been doing this for 15 years now,” said Marciano. “My experience helps me get deals done. When issues arise, I know who to go to, whether it’s an inspector, mortgage broker or someone else. I take pride in getting back to clients right away and taking care of things as they happen.” Marciano said the switch to Christie’s made a great first impression on her existing clients. “They were all excited to hear I was moving to Christie’s and very happy for me personally.” She added that Christie’s services are always client-oriented. “Christie’s is always helping agents help their clients, which is such a refreshing concept,” said Marciano. “A majority of my clients are coming from New York City or working there, so Christie’s connection to New York City is important. I’m proud to be associated with the Christie’s brand. Outside the office, Marciano and her two dogs take in all Hoboken has to offer. She and her husband love to explore eateries in Hoboken, Jersey City and New York City. Among her favorite places to travel is Miami, where her son, daughter in-law and two young grandchildren reside. Judith Marciano

JOAN MARKS: HELPING AGENTS AND GROWING BUSINESS New Manager Is Perfect Fit for Westchester and Hudson Valley W R I T T E N B Y LUCY PRO BERT | PHO TO G RAPHY BY JAMES EMO LO
J
oan Marks, who recently joined Christie’s International Real Estate as manager in the Westchester and Hudson Valley region, brings with her a wealth of experience in the real estate market. “As a broker working for 20 years, I understand the transactional side of the real estate business,” she says. “This will help me coach our agents not only from the business perspective, but also from my own personal experience.” Before starting a career in real estate in 2000, Marks was a marketing and sales executive for both Citibank and The Dreyfus Corporation, living in Closter, NJ. “We had three children at that point and I had a very large network of friends and contacts in the area from volunteering in the schools and our community. When I was ready to make a move, having this network in place, along with my marketing skills, made real estate really the perfect fit,” she says. She started as a Realtor in Bergen County and knew she had found her calling. “Selling a home is for most people one of the biggest decisions they will make, both financially and emotionally,” she says. “And I have always seen it as more than just a transaction, more than just selling their home, it’s helping people make the right decisions moving through this milestone in their life.” As a manager in the Westchester and Hudson Valley region of Christie’s International Real Estate, Marks’ primary focus
will be on growth in two distinct areas: Finding and recruiting agents to join Christie’s and increasing production of the existing agents in the office by helping them reach their goals and grow their businesses. “I was drawn here because Christie’s is a luxury, high-end brand with a very demanding and sophisticated clientele. They go into a market and understand exactly what is needed,” she says. And Christie’s is second to none in not only recruiting great talent but in their openness to an entrepreneurial approach where it’s not one size fits all. “That really spoke to me,” she adds. Newly settled in Westchester County, NY, Marks looks forward to becoming involved in her local community. “I volunteered in many areas when we lived in Closter and I look forward to continuing that in the near future as we get established here,” she says. In her spare time, Marks loves to ski with her family (her three children live in Colorado) as well as hiking and biking … really anything that involves the outdoors, she says. She also enjoys entertaining: “I love cooking and bringing people together.” When it comes to her new role at Christie’s, Marks couldn’t be any more clear in her vision. “I’m incredibly passionate about helping our agents succeed and really driving results,” she says. “That’s why I stepped out of sales and moved into becoming a manager, I see my goal as achieving success through helping others. That’s definitely what drives me.” Joan Marks

Evelyn Paladino’s personal spin on happiness includes being committed to fitness and enjoying the appreciation of music instilled in her by her mother and grandmother.
Natural wonders and fascinating destinations inspire Curtis Wright and Erica, his journalist wife, to document their travels, like to Aspen, CO., in memorable photos.
Architecture, photography and traveling are Curtis Wright’s passions. The dovetailing of these interests evolved naturally. A former property manager in New York City, Wright became familiar with a variety of architectural styles there. He enthuses, “New York was one of the original colonies. It has a vast array of architectural styles that are historically important.” He and his wife, Erica, an award-winning journalist and television producer, have traveled to historical and architectural marvels including Dublin, Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day, Italy and Zion National Park and Echo Canyon, both in Utah. Wright says 2020 is a “breather year” for travel. However, he and Erica will attend destination weddings in Cyprus and England. To record these wonders, Wright snaps photos with his I-Phone. “I’ve grown to love using the phone. There are no filters, just what’s happening in nature around you.” Wright is a Realtor associate working out of the Montclair office of Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey. He and Erica reside in Livingston.

For the past 35 years, Evelyn Paladino has been a workout enthusiast. Formerly a fitness instructor in the area, spinning has always been her passion. “It’s the mind/body connection you get from it,” she says. “Spinning allows you to de-stress, get the benefits of a great workout and enjoy phenomenal music.” Sidelined with a injury, Paladino is working hard to get back on her bike. A Christie’s International Real Estate broker associate working out of the Ridgewood office, Paladino lives in Hackensack with her husband and counts music as another passion in her life. Growing up among musicians, her grandmother was an opera singer and her mother opened for Perry Como. “I was always surrounded by music and still enjoy going to the opera and Broadway shows,” she says. At 62, Paladino shows no signs of slowing down: “I’m a happy go lucky person who feels very young in mind and in life.”

Keith Lawrence enjoys a trip to the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas with his children and a new-found friend.
A self-described workaholic, Keith Lawrence is a Realtor associate in the Mahwah office of Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey. He is passionate about real estate and is happiest when “helping my clients find their dream homes or getting their best offer.” A Hillsdale resident for the past 22 years, Lawrence specializes as both a buyer’s agent and a listing agent, as well as working extensively with residential property rentals, relocations and real estate investors. He notes, “In Mahwah, half of the residents live in condos; this is my area of expertise.” Although Lawrence happily spends most of his waking hours working, he does occasionally find time to unwind and enjoy the great outdoors — especially vacations that involve hiking and skiing. Lawrence also enjoys spending time with friends and frequenting local restaurants.
Jeanette Seijas Gisonna, a broker associate with Christie’s Real Estate in the Hoboken office, has more than 25 years of experience in real estate and more than 20 years of experience working specifically with new construction along the Hudson River waterfront of New Jersey’s Gold Coast. In recent years, she has served as the assistant vice president of Sales for a luxury condominium development in Weehawken, as well as broker of record for Lennar, WCI Communities, and K. Hovnanian Homes. Her husband, Andrew Gisonna is a Realtor associate in Christie’s Ramsey office, and his focus is on “bridging the Gold Coast and the suburbs.” He is thrilled to be associated with Christie’s: “Everyone truly benefits from the Christie’s experience — not just the clients, but the agents as well.” Andrew is a volunteer member of the Architectural Review Committee in Oakland. He also supports the Bergen Animal Refuge and enjoys coaching and instructing students in performance driving and car control. The Gisonnas currently reside in Bergen County with their 15-yearold son. They own an investment property in Hudson County and love to spend time on the Gold Coast, where Jeanette is very active in the Weehawken Community.
Like many of their colleagues at Christie’s International NNJ, Andrew and Jeanette Gisonna enjoy traveling to beautiful destinations, particularly abroad, with their 15-year-old son.

Jolanta Krygier can add helicopter flight to the uplifting activities, such as yoga and meditation, that she participates in.
Staying active comes easy for Thomas Mikalouskas whether he’s at home with his wife Tammy Lynn and their two young daughters, working closely with his Christie’s clients or shooting hoops on the basketball court.
Relaxing on a beach or exercising are the ideal stress busters for Thomas Mikalouskas. He and his wife, Tammy Lynn, travel to Aruba each year and are regulars at his parent’s Seaside Park bayfront home. “It’s important to get away and just relax,” he notes. He also plays basketball, walks and hikes. He quips that with two young daughters — four-yearold Brooklynn and one-year-old Madisyn — the activity level in his home sometimes exceeds that of his Westwood office where he is a Realtor associate with Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey. “My family is super important to me,” says Mikalouskas. “But it doesn’t take away from my professional commitment. The relationships I build with my clients are as important to me as my family.” He and Tammy Lynn enjoy planning excursions, sometimes spur of the moment, like a recent trip to Disney World in Orlando. They live in River Vale.
Jolanta Krygier is driven. It is a trait she passed on to her son, who is a junior at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “He is my pride and joy,” says Krieger. Before her son went to college, the family travelled extensively for her son’s fencing competitions. Krygier and her husband reside in Mahwah, and they are trying to enjoy their empty nest. “Although I work a lot, I love going to yoga, practicing meditation, and taking a holistic approach to wellness. I also try to read when I can.” Krygier is a Realtor associate in the Ridgewood office of Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey, but she works in many northern New Jersey towns, such as Cresskill and Englewood. She has found Christie’s to be exceptionally well run and supportive, and the clientele have been a good match for her: “They are focused and know exactly what they want.”
Celia Riggio, a broker associate in Christie’s Ramsey office, is a Jersey Girl through and through. Riggio and her family spend time year-round “down the Shore.” In fact, Riggio has combined her love of the beach and real estate and has been known to represent both buyers and sellers in transactions on the Jersey shore, as well as her regular territory in northern New Jersey. She grew up in River Edge and has lived in Oakland for the past 24 years with her husband and two daughters. A graduate of Douglass College at Rutgers University with a degree in history, Riggio was originally drawn to real estate by her appreciation of décor, landscape and architecture. But what she most enjoys now is using her extensive sales and marketing expertise to negotiate and conduct business. Riggio is an active and devoted member of her community, serving as a Eucharistic minister at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and volunteering her time at The Center for Hope & Safety, a shelter which provides services for victims of domestic violence.

Celia Riggio and her family find time to “horse around” when not enjoying yearround visits to the Jersey Shore.

Joan m. Sobeck in Venice, Italy, with grandchildren Ryan and Ashley.
“My life has been my children and real estate,” says Joan m. Sobeck, a broker associate in the Westwood office of Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey. Sobeck owned an agency in Hillsdale for 30 years. The fieldstone building she purchased for office space had housed a barber shop. She retained the iconic pole and painted it orange and black, her high school’s colors. She earned the Graduate Realtor Institute designation and taught its advertising and fair housing programs. With this wealth of knowledge, Sobeck authored two books. The 12th edition of Essentials of New Jersey Real Estate, used in licensing programs, was due to be published this past spring. Real Estate Brokerage: A Management Guide is a resource used throughout the country.
Pictured with her mother and two sisters, Sinead Coughlan, right, enjoys renovating properties, including a 250-year-old farmhouse she and her husband purchased in her native Ireland.
Sinead Coughlan’s interest in real estate began at age 19 when she moved from her native County Limerick, Ireland to London. “I knew back then when I was working in the hospitality industry that real estate would become my passion,” she says. Even now, as a CIRE licensed real estate salesperson in Westchester and Hudson Valley, Coughlan’s love of properties has spilled into her personal life as she and her husband, Paddy, have bought and renovated many of their own properties. Currently living in Hartsdale, NY, Sinead and Paddy are working on a very special long-distance project: renovating a 250-year-old farmhouse and cottage back in County Limerick, where they plan to eventually live when they retire. “My ultimate dream would be to go back across the pond one day where it all started many years ago and live there,” she says.

Tathiana Cespedes values the time she spends with her daughters — baking special treats with them and imparting the importance of helping others.
When she’s not helping her clients buy and sell homes out of Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey’s Montclair office, Tathiana Cespedes is most likely in her kitchen in New Milford doing what she loves the most: Baking with her two young daughters, ages 3 and 4. “They love to bake and I have a background in nutrition so I understand food and love sharing that with them,” she says. Also a priority is teaching her girls the importance of helping others, even at their young age. “I’m involved in community clothing and toy donation drives and I want them to know that many other kids aren’t as fortunate as they are, so giving what we can to them is very important,” she says. This summer the family is going on their first trip to Disney. “One of my girls wants to be Rapunzel and the other, Ariel, so we’ll be in the right place,” she says.

Sheryl Epstein-Romano enjoyed several successful careers before joining the Ridgewood office of Christie’s International Real Estate Northern New Jersey. She was a graphic artist who owned her own business. She earned a master’s degree in Teaching and a certification in Teaching English as a Second Language and taught all grade levels. “My favorite,” she recalls, “was the American Language Program at Columbia University.” While teaching, she also ran a private ESL business. Real estate entered the picture in 1993, another career she embraced with gusto. Epstein-Romano serves on the Professional Standards Committee of the Real Source Board of Realtors. She received the Five Star Professional Award, a designation bestowed on fewer than one percent of professionals. She believes in being involved in the community. “I was appointed by the mayor of Upper Saddle River to the Zoning Board of Adjustment and served for 11 years.” She muses, “Time off is at a premium.” Epstein-Romano enjoys spending it with her adult son and daughter. “We go to the beach, shop and eat out.”

Colleen and Andrew Kelly with daughters Morgan and Katie, and son Jack, are pictured in the Slieve Russell Hotel in Ballyconnell, Ireland, during a family visit and tour of the Island.
“I’m excited for the growth opportunities in this newly-created office,” says Colleen Kelly, a recent addition to Christie’s International Real Estate New City office. The licensed real estate associate broker brings eight years of experience to Christie’s. She and her husband, Andrew, are dedicated to planning and attending fundraising events hosted by the Alzheimer’s Association. In 2017, Kelly’s mother died from the disease just days after her caregiver father passed. “I like to take sadness and make it positive,” she says. Kelly was a guest speaker at the Association’s 2019 summit in Texas where she spoke before 2,000 people. Andrew ran 100 miles within 32 hours to raise money for the organization. The couple strive to make a difference in the lives of others who have had similar experiences with a loved one diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Kelly enjoys hiking, swimming and biking with her husband and three children. She is proud to have completed a triathlon in Wyckoff, and has fond memories of traveling through Ireland with her family and 30 members of her husband’s family.
Lanie Von Ogden, a Realtor associate in Christie’s Hoboken office, entered the real estate industry because of her love of helping others, and that is the guiding principle behind both her professional and personal life. She currently resides in Bayonne with her husband and four-year-old daughter; she is expecting another child this summer. Von Ogden studied psychology, communications and theatre at Southern Connecticut University and has found that she utilizes all of those fields in her day-to-day life. She is a superior home stager and can work quite effectively with her clients to help them maximize their property. Von Ogden loves to travel, but when she is home, she throws herself into her daughter’s playdates, parties, programs and school parent teacher organization. “I also love to participate and spearhead charity events in an effort to give back to my local community and to families in need; it’s in my DNA to help others.” When she is not working, being a mom, or volunteering, Von Ogden can be found enjoying a karaoke night out with friends.
