The iconic building at the corner of Admiralty and Mindanao Way just completed a major overhaul, updating the interior office areas for the Department of Beaches and Harbors marketing staff as well as the public lobby. The public can also look forward to the completion of renovations at Marina (“Mother’s”) Beach, expected in June 2018. The recreation area is receiving new picnic tables and barbecues, upgraded picnic pavilions and restrooms and landscaping. This past holiday season saw the debut of Marina Lights, a new holiday light program in Burton Chace Park that ran nightly through December. Free entertainment including caroling performers and outdoor holiday movies were offered for free on Saturdays. A huge draw was the giant snow globe positioned at the entrance to the park for photo ops. We expect all of these amenities to return for the 2018 holiday season.

BUILDING LAX's automatEd People MOVER On January 23, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) was proud to announce LAX Integrated Express Solutions (LINXS) as the winning bid for LAX's upcoming Automated People Mover (APM) project. The APM is the centerpiece of the airport's $14 billion infrastructure campaign, the Landside Access Modernization Plan (LAMP), aimed at transforming LAX into a world-class airport with improved passenger experience and reduced traffic congestion. The APM project will provide fast and free transportation throughout LAX to both passengers and employees, 24 hours a day, and will be built completely above grade (over street level) so as to not limit current street access. With the APM holding such a vital place in our airport's future, the selection process was treated fairly, and carefully, before being awarded to LINXS. The LINXS consortium comprises of Fluor, Balfour Beatty, Hochtief, ACS, Flatiron, Dragados USA, Bombardier and several other companies. In a recent press release, LAWA stated, "LINXS was the successful proposal across all fronts, with the highest technical proposal score, the lowest project Net Present Value cost, and the lowest project design and construction cost. We appreciate the strong competition and participation by the other teams for more than a year. This engagement strengthened the process and the City of Los Angeles will have an even better project as a result." City Council will consider the APM contract in April 2018, with construction scheduled to start later this year.

Since its opening, Visitation has served over 20,000 students, providing quality education focused on teaching the whole child. Today, the spirit of a renewed Visitation is alive and well. With a 70-year old school comes a myriad of much needed improvements to the classrooms, grounds, common space and church. The school is well underway with a $3.5 million capital campaignâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;hitting the $1 million mark three months into the effort with a generous donation from the Drollinger Family Charitable Foundation. Renovations of the elementary bathrooms, hallways and daycare center are just some of the highlight projects that have been completed. There has also been extensive upgrades to technology infrastructure, furniture and exterior of the parish with new landscaping and public art. Visitation is working to make the outside of their facility reflect the beauty of the people inside the parish and school.

Nonprofit AIRPORT MARINA COUNSELING SERVICE AMCS unveils new LGBT Affirmative Therapy Center to serve clients and educate therapists.

310.670.1410 | airportmarina.org Airport Marina Counseling Service is excited to announce the launch of its new center, which will specialize in psychotherapy for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender folks and welcome all cultures, ethnicities, sexual orientations and gender identities. The new center will make AMCS one of the few clinics in Los Angeles and the only one in the area specializing in services specifically geared toward the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and asexual (LGBTQIA) population. “Our therapists are really well-informed and well-trained to give specific treatment to this community,” said Dr. Rachel Marks, a licensed clinical psychologist with over a decade of clinical and administrative experience, who will lead the center. “This is an under-served population, and there will always be the need for clinicians to understand the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQIA community. This is really important work.”

Study after study show LGBT Americans suffer from mental health disorders at rates far exceeding those of heterosexual people—depression strikes gay men at six times the rate of straight men; nearly half of transgender people encounter symptoms of anxiety and depression; lesbians and bisexual women also deal with higher rates of mental health struggles than their straight sisters, with bisexual women faring even worse than lesbians. LGB youth are four times more likely, and questioning youth three times more likely, to attempt suicide as their straight peers; 41 percent of transgender people have attempted to end their lives. Among the issues Dr. Marks anticipates people will seek treatment for include depression, anxiety, relationships, HIV and coming-out support.

From the very beginning, LMU has established a history of champions.

Our hometown of Los Angeles has a historic reputation with the Olympics. As the only host city to finish an Olympic Games with a surplus, our 1984 model is often used as an example for success—one that we hope to continue with the LA 2028 Summer Olympics. Hosting a profitable Olympic Games is not our only tie to Olympic history. Loyola Marymount University, an LAX Coastal institution for more than 100 years, has represented Los Angeles and the United States of America in multiple Games to earn recognition for our region. In the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, three student athletes participated: Rachel Riddell and Christine Robinson for women's waterpolo and Reid Priddy, a three-time All-American for men's volleyball, appeared in his first Olympics outing. In 2008 the Olympics headed to Beijing, where Priddy once again represented men's volleyball, with Jeff Stevens for men's baseball and Warren Anderson as an alternate for rowing. Finally, the 2012 30th Olympiad in London featured Priddy as team captain for men's volleyball, leaving us in anticipation as to where LMU—and USA—will place in future games.

The new center, expected to open in Spring 2018, will replace the current facility and nearly double the size of the Bob Hope USO at LAX.

ONE LAST LOOK

Behind the colors of the LAX Gateway Pylons Since 2000, the LAX Gateway Pylons have been one of Los Angeles' most beautiful and recognizable public art displays. It's hard not to notice the bright lights from numerous points in Westchester, or while driving down the area's thoroughfares, helping to highlight the beauty of our neighborhood airport and surrounding communities. The distinctive architectural structures welcoming travelers to LAX were part of an overall multi million-dollar construction and landscaping program designed to make the airport more welcoming for the more than 80 million passengers who use the airport annually. Today, the airport is undergoing a Capital Improvement Program aimed at modernizing their grounds for passenger efficiency and convenience, but while the airport has grown, the pylons are still visible to airline passengers from over 3,000 feet in the air. Designed to mimic airport runways and aircraft takeoff, the 1.5-mile lineup of 11 colorful, translucent columns increases in height—ranging from 25 to 60 feet—along Century Boulevard. The group culminates in a "Gateway Circle" of fifteen 100-foot columns at the intersection of Century and Sepulveda. The pylons are structural steel support frames, encased in a layer of translucent, tempered glass. They are part of an overall design developed by a team headed by the architectural firm of Ted Tokio Tanaka in Marina del Rey. Tanaka designed the pylons to pay homage to the power of flight, orienting each pylon skyward to represent an aircraft's takeoff pattern. Pylons is their colors, as each pylon is lit with interior lights from dusk to dawn every day. In 2006, LED (light-emitting diode) technology was installed in each pylon during a major refurbishment of the structures. The LEDs are 75 percent more energy efficient than the original theatrical lighting system. Because LEDs burn less electricity while providing more vibrant hues, LAWA's annual electricity costs for the pylons was cut by 75 percent, down to $18,000 per year. As for the pylon's colors, according to LAWA Public Relations Director Nancy Castles, "lighting artist Paul Tzanetopoulos did the original PUBLIC ART lighting program in 2000, following a juried art program conducted by the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA). Paul's work was selected, allowing him to curate the colors, frequency and sequencing of the lighting (i.e. how long each color stays up and on which pylons)." "After upgrading all of the lighting mechanisms inside each of the pylons with new, energy efficient LED technology, LAWA construction and maintenance electricians created a new program based on Tzanetopoulos' design but with new colors." The LAWA team also created a new program with colors inspired by the holidays: red, green and white for December, and red, white and blue for Memorial Day, July 4th, September 11 and Veterans' Day. The colors of the pylons are also changed throughout the year to honor specific humanitarian efforts. For Breast Cancer Awareness Day the pylons glow pink, for LA Pride Weekend they represent a brilliant rainbow, and

when local sports teams take home the win—such as when the Lakers won the NBA Championship in 2010—they proudly display the home team's colors. Each year, LAWA also does their part during the worldwide "Earth Hour," where electrical use is discouraged for one hour in March. This is the only hour during the year where the pylons go dark, with LAWA leading by example in Los Angeles' energy conserving efforts. But Tzanetopoulos' influence on LAX did not stop with the pylons. In 2014, LAX began their LAX Central Terminal Area Curbside Appeal and Roadway Improvement Project, updating the entrance to the new Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) that opened in 2013. New canopies and additions to the terminal were highlighted with 91 sculptural light poles and a "light ribbon" along the roadway, all with LED capabilities allowing them the same colorful brilliance of the pylons, built in partnership with AECOM. In 2015, when LAX welcomed athletes to the Los Angeles Special Olympics, Mayor Eric Garcetti worked with LAWA to display a special light show in their honor. The more than one-mile-long stretch was programmed with Special Olympics-inspired colors, showing that our neighborhood airport once again inspires inclusivity through public art. Currently, LAWA states the tentative completion of their Landside Access Modernization Program will be in 2023, so with five years to go we can't wait to see what LAX lights up next. Kirby Israelson
