retail and office market. The panel pointed out that existing LAWA and rental car lots throughout the area present opportunities for new, Silicon Beach-type creative office space as they are decommissioned to consolidate lots in a single, large facility. Experts also said the hotel market will continue to improve, so thought should be given to where new hotel sites could be located. Of course, the panel also suggested that Gateway invest in adding new place-making amenities to improve its brand and experience. “We look forward to taking on this challenge because it means creating a better Gateway for visitors and for our members,” said Executive Director Laurie Hughes.

This type of “Rail to APM” connection can be found at other airports around the country, including San Francisco, Oakland, New York (John F. Kennedy), Newark, Miami, Dallas/Fort Worth and Phoenix. The Metro Green and Crenshaw/LAX Lines will also serve a station at Aviation/Century that will connect transit patrons with destinations along the busy Century Boulevard corridor. Overall, these new connections will enable travelers to get from the airport to Downtown to the South Bay, and even to the Valley. “This is the most aggressive, expansive transportation plan in the country,” said MTA CEO, Phil Washington. “It’s gonna open up the entire system.” It’s also going to open up some amazing opportunities for those near LAX. From exciting improvements at LAX to new venues that will attract visitors from around the world, the LAX Coastal community is undergoing a 360-degree facelift that will help solidify it as the hub of Los Angeles. “There was a time when people traveled quickly away from the airport area to where they really wanted to go in Southern California,” said LAX Coastal Chamber President/CEO, Christina Davis. “But it’s clear now that our area is a destination unto itself. We have amazing restaurants, firstclass hotels and, soon, easy connections to the public transit web that can take you to almost every corner of Los Angeles." “It’s an exciting time to be here, and we’re looking forward to the economic benefits and community amenities that the next few years will bring. This Chamber is at the epicenter of what is happening throughout Los Angeles, and as the leader of this organization I know I speak for everyone when I say we could not be more proud to represent this community.”

W
estchester is beautiful. I am reminded of that each morning during my commute to work. I
drive down Westchester Parkway with my window down, reveling in the colors of California poppies contrasting with LAX runways and enjoying the bright, blue sky that all Angelinos know, love and experience almost every day of the year. The wind is blowing through the trees, ruffling the purple flowers of our highway iceplant and conjuring the smell of freshly cut grass. I am happy—this is truly one of the best ways to start your workday. As I pass Fire Station #5 I remember that the view has gotten even better these days as Welcome
to Westchester comes into view. For those who haven’t seen behind Drollinger Properties’ Airport Office Center building in the new year, Welcome to Westchester is our neighborhood’s newest public art piece by muralist and Otis College of Art and Design instructor David Russell. The piece was dedicated on December 18, garnering media attention as one of the largest murals in the Westside, covering more than 4,000 bricks and taking nearly 3 months to complete. It represents community pride, displaying local landmarks, events and wildlife, as well as a celebration of diversity and inclusion—when the sun hits the mural each afternoon, it highlights the hidden words of “Welcome!” written in different languages. The beauty doesn’t stop here, because if I take a quick detour away from my office (beautiful in its own right, too, with a new paint job, fluorescent sign and palm tree graphics) and drive atop the CVS/Ralphs parking lot I am treated to a panoramic

"It is the embodiment of the American ideal; in spirit and deed it is a reflection of our democratic values." They suggested that public art was not just about making things look good, but also about improving our overall quality of life. Artistic installations encourage us to look, to disrupt our everyday routine and once again pay attention to the world around us. They drive discussion and conversation, igniting recognition and community pride through shared photos, trending hashtags and increased tourism and foot traffic. Public art changes the world—not just beautifies my morning commute—and the LAX Coastal community is just getting started. To quote Karen Dial, “I’m so excited to be bringing more public art to Westchester, and this is only the beginning.” Kirby Israelson

310.306.9900 | visitmarinadelrey.com Visitors to Marina del Rey can look forward to a recently refreshed Visitor Information Center this spring. The iconic building at the corner of Admiralty and Mindanao Way just completed a major overhaul, updating the interior office areas for the Department of Beaches and Harbors marketing staff as well as the public lobby. The public can also look forward to the completion of renovations at Marina (“Mother’s”) Beach, expected in June 2018. The recreation area is receiving new picnic tables and barbecues, upgraded picnic pavilions and restrooms and landscaping. This past holiday season saw the debut of Marina Lights, a new holiday light program in Burton Chace Park that ran nightly through December. Free entertainment including caroling performers and outdoor holiday movies were offered for free on Saturdays. A huge draw was the giant snow globe positioned at the entrance to the park for photo ops. We expect all of these amenities to return for the 2018 holiday season.

construction & engineering Finally giving passengers a first-class, convenient and reliable way to get around LAX.
From Infrastructure To Exteriors
BUILDING LAX's automatEd People MOVER On January 23, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) was proud to announce LAX Integrated Express Solutions (LINXS) as the winning bid for LAX's upcoming Automated People Mover (APM) project. The APM is the centerpiece of the airport's $14 billion infrastructure campaign, the Landside Access Modernization Plan (LAMP), aimed at transforming LAX into a world-class airport with improved passenger experience and reduced traffic congestion. The APM project will provide fast and free transportation throughout LAX to both passengers and employees, 24 hours a day, and will be built completely above grade (over street level) so as to not limit current street access. With the APM holding such a vital place in our airport's future, the selection process was treated fairly, and carefully, before being awarded to LINXS. The LINXS consortium comprises of Fluor, Balfour Beatty, Hochtief, ACS, Flatiron, Dragados USA, Bombardier and several other companies. In a recent press release, LAWA stated, "LINXS was the successful proposal across all fronts, with the highest technical proposal score, the lowest project Net Present Value cost, and the lowest project design and construction cost. We appreciate the strong competition and participation by the other teams for more than a year. This engagement strengthened the process and the City of Los Angeles will have an even better project as a result." City Council will consider the APM contract in April 2018, with construction scheduled to start later this year.

Dining & catering Dedicated to showcasing the past, present and future of aviation.
The PROUD BIRD food bazaar & events Center 310.670.3093 | theproudbird.com Last year saw the completed remodel of one of our neighborhood's most iconic restaurants: The Proud Bird. Now known as The Proud Bird Food Bazaar & Events Center, this historic location has always been a local favorite for dining and watching planes land since it opened in 1967 as a "salute to achievements in aviation," and is now an achievement in itself. Embracing the food bazaar style, The Proud Bird has remodeled their menu and dining options. Diners can now choose their meal from a few different kitchens, inspired by American, Italian, and Asian cuisines—including the famous Bludso's BBQ—before taking their seat either indoors, with floor to ceiling windows that provide a panoramic view of LAX runways, or on their open outdoor patio, featuring a model plane park. For the sophisticated patron, the Mile-High Club Bar & Lounge features the same great views, but with the addition of a rotating beer selection and aviation-themed cocktails. As a destination favored by children and aviation aficionados alike, The Proud Bird not only offers a delicious meal, but also a history lesson on Los Angeles aviation. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a suspended replica of a P-40 Flying Tiger aircraft in the main hall, complete with painted eyes, teeth and wings that stretch from wall to wall. But the history lesson doesn't stop there; through interactive exhibits displayed throughout the restaurant, visitors can learn more about the Tuskegee Airmen (African American heroes of WWII), the Aztec Eagles (Mexican pilots who fought during WWII), women aviators, the history of SpaceX and more. The Proud Bird also features renovated events spaces that can accommodate events big and small. From corporate events to social gatherings up to 1,200 guests in the largest free-standing ballroom near LAX, they have plenty of perks, including complimentary parking, complimentary wifi and state-of-the-art technology. As the brainchild of David Tallichet, World War II pilot and founder of the Specialty Restaurants Corporation, The Proud Bird Food Bazaar & Events Center is a dedicated advocate for the past, present and future of aviation—and a good meal—and their passion is felt the moment you walk through their doors.

cooking rotisserie chicken.
While cooking rotisserie chicken started gaining recognition in the early 2000’s due to its sale in supermarkets, this cooking method has a rich past, first appearing in France during the Medieval period. Rumor has it that grilled chicken was a favored meal of King Richard the Lionheart, King of England during the 12th century, whose chefs would roast the chicken over a flame using spit skewers, slowly turning the meat until it was cooked evenly. From there the cooking method spread across the globe and was seen throughout Turkey, Greece and the Middle East. Fast forward to 1946 when rotisserie chicken, or Chicken Rio, was introduced to Mexico in Colonia Anzures. The recipe had changed slightly, with Mexicans adding their own spices and seasonings, but it was a household item by the '70s before traveling across the border to the United States a few decades later. Today, you can taste the best in rotisserie chicken at proud Chamber member Benny’s Tacos & Chicken Rotisserie, a neighborhood staple. At Benny's, you know that each delicious dish is cooked just for you, with fresh ingredients, hormone-free meats, fresh seafood, farm-fresh vegetables and organic rice and beans. gifts; it is the duty of each educator to help each
The story of Visitation School began seven decades ago in 1947, when a young Visitation Church parish came together focused on the importance of a Catholic school education in a new and emerging community. Back in the 1940s, Westchester was open fields with plans for development and a growing municipal airport.
child discover and develop these gifts.
Since its opening, Visitation has served over 20,000 students, providing quality education focused on teaching the whole child. Today, the spirit of a renewed Visitation is alive and well. With a 70-year old school comes a myriad of much needed improvements to the classrooms, grounds, common space and church. The school is well underway with a $3.5 million capital campaign—hitting the $1 million mark three months into the effort with a generous donation from the Drollinger Family Charitable Foundation. Renovations of the elementary bathrooms, hallways and daycare center are just some of the highlight projects that have been completed. There has also been extensive upgrades to technology infrastructure, furniture and exterior of the parish with new landscaping and public art. Visitation is working to make the outside of their facility reflect the beauty of the people inside the parish and school.
Offering Private & Group Lessons for all
Parents have a choice when it comes to education for their children and Visitation leadership is proud to offer an extensive curriculum combined with athletics, foreign language, art, community service, technology and more. Visitation School educates amazing students in grades Junior Kindergarten through 8th grade and is served by an outstanding and dedicated faculty, led by Principal Christopher Watson and Fr. Hospitality Pacifica Hotels Since 1995, Pacifica Hotels has prided itself on providing a boutique hotel experience along the Pacific Coast—with additional locations in Hawaii and Florida. Consistently listed as one of the Top 10 Hotel Management Companies by Hotel Business Magazine, Pacifica offers highly personalized and friendly service, providing for a quieter ambiance and greater affordability.
Experience the golden bluffs and sweeping vistas of the Pacific Coast.
Pacifica is also a proud community partner, constantly giving back through volunteerism, philanthropy and fundraising efforts by partnering with organizations such as Toys for Tots, Second Harvest Food Bank and in 2017, The Thomas Fire Fund. Through a partnership with Clean the World, the largest global recycler of hotel soaps and bottled amenities, Pacifica has recycled over three tons of soap and bottles. Pacifica also gives back to the LAX Coastal region, both through sponsorships and volunteerism, and we are humbled to have four of their local hotels as LAX Coastal Chamber members: The Kinney, The Inn at Venice Beach, the Marina del Rey Hotel and Jamaica Bay Inn. With each Pacifica Hotel location, guests are sure to be treated to a variety of amenities. The Kinney in Venice Beach offers a playful style, with bright murals and communal fire pits right on Washington Boulevard. The Inn at Venice Beach is for those who enjoy the fusion of the classic Boardwalk style with modern touches—plus a mermaid mural. The Marina del Rey Hotel offers luxury on the water, featuring SALT Restaurant & Bar and an infinity pool/ spa overlooking the scenic marina. Lastly, Jamaica Bay Inn brings their guests to the tropics, with rattan furnishings, warm watercolor wallpapers and the newly remodeled Beachside Restaurant sitting right on the edge of Mother's Beach. For those looking to experience leisure, we invite you to spend the evening with Pacifica Hotels. HouSING & REAL ESTATE Villas at Playa vista
An artful blend of L.A. sophistication and coastal California living.
310.862.6740 | villasatplayavista.com The concept of walkable neighborhoods has been gaining traction over the years. While far from a new concept, walking culture has been losing ground ever since the rise of the automobile; but within this new era of health-conscious environmentalists, the idea of leaving your car in the garage has become more appealing. The public wants to live near where they work and shop, not only to avoid traffic and increase exercise, but also because supporting the local economy builds stronger communities—and Chamber members are delivering. Villas at Playa Vista offers the quintessential SoCal beach lifestyle. Located in the heart of Playa Vista and within walking distance of neighborhood boutiques, an outdoor entertainment and retail center, cinemas, restaurants, local parks and gardens, they have taken the concept of walkability to heart. Their three communities—Montecito, Malibu and Sausalito—also feature sustainable technology, focusing on water conservation, energy efficiency and recycling efforts. In their own words, “the Villas at Playa Vista sets a new standard. Perfectly combining elegance with convenience, this is a place where how you live integrates perfectly with where you live.” And all of it is within a five minute walk.

LEGAL SERVICES GOLDING + LAMOTHE
Providing high quality, efficient and

value-added legal services to our clients
“Law is a people-oriented business,” says Rae Lamothe, LAX Coastal Chamber board member and one half of the Golding + Lamothe team. Coming from a hospitality background, Rae has always been attracted to professions that work with—and for—people. At Golding + Lamothe, the law firm she runs with her partner Jonathan Golding, Rae focuses on Healthcare and Employment law. “Employees are your biggest asset,” she says. “Your biggest asset, but also your biggest source of potential liability.”
using cutting edge productivity tools.
We asked Rae to share with us her best tip for helping companies avoid employment law litigation, and she said it’s all about finding the right advice. “Find an advisor that is familiar with the law and allows you to call them with dumb questions,” she told us. “It’s better to get a quick answer about how to do things properly than to spend extra time fixing your mistake.” But finding the right advisor isn’t always easy. In her line of work, Rae has heard from multiple clients where they trusted someone who gave them incorrect information. And trying to do it on your own isn’t always the best solution, either, since do-it-yourself software is not always current and isn’t tailored to your company’s specific needs. When it comes to protecting yourself it’s important to have the right team; from good staff and leadership within your company, to the best advisor to help steer you in the right direction, and finally, to the best legal team to help you out of a tough situation. With over 45 years of combined legal experience, Golding + Lamothe is a full-service law firm representing a wide range of business entities and individuals in the areas of real estate, corporate, construction, healthcare and employment law and litigation. They understand litigation is often not a good use of your resources and work with their clients to solve legal problems before litigation becomes necessary. But if it does, Golding + Lamothe is your advocate.

manufacturing California Manufacturing Technology Consulting
The Top 5 Manufacturing Trends of 2018, from CMTC.
310.263.3060 | cmtc.com The emergence and acceptance of digital technologies and convergence of Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) are rapidly changing the face of the manufacturing industry. The combination of these factors is likely to give industry leaders a competitive edge in 2018. The success and endless applications of these evolving technologies substantiates their legitimacy as we look to the future of manufacturing. In their recent report, California Manufacturing Technology Consulting (CMTC) selected five emerging trends that manufacturers of all sizes need to be aware of in the new year. E-Commerce: Business buying behavior continues to shift to e-commerce solutions as customers increasingly continue to research and complete their business purchases online. Smart Manufacturing: SM is anticipated to be the next Industrial Revolution, merging the physical and virtual worlds to create new areas of innovation and optimization for the manufacturing industry as a whole. Robotics: Due to their usability and precision, adoption of industrial robots has surged in recent years—in 2016, sales increased to 294,312 units, the highest ever recorded and continuing a four-year upward trend—and is expected to continue to grow. Network/Cybersecurity: A secure network not only protects an organization’s own intellectual property, but that of its customers as well. Additive Manufacturing: AM, a technology that has rapidly evolved and matured in recent years, is the high-precision fabrication of products that are built one layer at a time. It is commonly referred to as 3D printing. To read more and download the full "Top 5 Manufacturing Trends of 2018" CMTC report, please visit cmtc.com.

Medical & Care Services always best care senior services, Beach Cities
Helping people maintain a safe, independent and dignified lifestyle.
310.546.3400 | abc-beachcities.com As a family member, it is often easy to see when your aging parent or loved one could benefit from some extra help. Assistance with performing daily activities will make life easier, and will help them continue to live safer, healthier and longer. Today there are many care options available, be it at home, at an independent/assisted living community or a board & care. However, your loved one doesn't always see how they could benefit from having a caregiver. They might not see anything wrong with how they are living now, or not recognize areas where they are struggling; plus, receiving any type of care may make them feel as if they are losing their independence—even if the end result is the exact opposite. Here are some tips on how to stay calm and see things from their perspective. Talk through the situation. Discuss their reasons for not wanting help, along with your reasons for recommending it. Explain how an in-home caregiver can be beneficial. There is a lot of flexibility that comes with caregiving. Talk about how having extra support can allow them to live more independently and comfortably while doing the things they enjoy. If staying at home is the option, you can start slowly. Begin with just a few hours a week of caregiving to allow them to adjust to the idea of having a professional at the house helping out. Realize that it is their choice. The right approach and communication tactics could make the process easier for a move to a community or receiving in-home care. Always Best Care Senior Services, Beach Cities provides seniors with the appropriate level of care for their needs and desires. In-home caregivers can help with a wide range of non-medical tasks and allow your loved one to age at home more confidently and safely. If moving to a community is the choice, we can help you find the most appropriate community for your elderly loved ones. Call to learn more about available senior services.

Expanding your healthcare network When it comes to your health, making the right decision is important. From diet and exercise to choosing a medical provider, it's all about having proper information and good options. For LAX Coastal residents, all of the options are good—and that's because we are home to some of the biggest names in healthcare. In 2017, Cedars-Sinai not only opened a new medical center in Playa Vista, they also acquired Marina del Rey Hospital to expand their services and level of care. At Kaiser Permanente, they believe that "together, we thrive"—a mission they fulfill each day at their multiple locations. And lastly, Providence St. John's Health Center also grew in 2017, opening physician offices in Playa Vista to add to their already award-winning medical centers. If you're looking to expand your healthcare network, look no further than these local resources.

Nonprofit AIRPORT MARINA COUNSELING SERVICE AMCS unveils new LGBT Affirmative Therapy Center to serve clients and educate therapists.
310.670.1410 | airportmarina.org Airport Marina Counseling Service is excited to announce the launch of its new center, which will specialize in psychotherapy for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender folks and welcome all cultures, ethnicities, sexual orientations and gender identities. The new center will make AMCS one of the few clinics in Los Angeles and the only one in the area specializing in services specifically geared toward the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex and asexual (LGBTQIA) population. “Our therapists are really well-informed and well-trained to give specific treatment to this community,” said Dr. Rachel Marks, a licensed clinical psychologist with over a decade of clinical and administrative experience, who will lead the center. “This is an under-served population, and there will always be the need for clinicians to understand the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQIA community. This is really important work.”
We are a nonprofit group of LAX
Study after study show LGBT Americans suffer from mental health disorders at rates far exceeding those of heterosexual people—depression strikes gay men at six times the rate of straight men; nearly half of transgender people encounter symptoms of anxiety and depression; lesbians and bisexual women also deal with higher rates of mental health struggles than their straight sisters, with bisexual women faring even worse than lesbians. LGB youth are four times more likely, and questioning youth three times more likely, to attempt suicide as their straight peers; 41 percent of transgender people have attempted to end their lives. Among the issues Dr. Marks anticipates people will seek treatment for include depression, anxiety, relationships, HIV and coming-out support.
area business people supporting underpriveleged youth in the LAX surrounding areas. Please join us for lunch on Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:30pm at the LAX Renaissance Hotel.
Open seven days a week, AMCS is a nonprofit, community based mental health clinic that serves the LAX, South Bay and Westside areas of Los Angeles. They are proud to provide an array of successful programs and therapeutic services to meet the needs of all who need them, many of whom would otherwise have little access to counseling. For those seeking support, AMCS is there for you.

professional services Every day, we help job seekers find work and help businesses find qualified employees.
EXPRESS EMPLOYMENT 310.414.3100 | expresspros.com/laxca Owning a business that enables her to positively impact lives has been Anarissa Cachila's lifelong dream. This dream was realized when she opened Express Employment Professionals in September 2014, a staffing and recruiting firm whose vision is to help employees find good jobs and to help employers find good people. Anarissa and her team work with job seekers to help them find the right job for their skills and experience. They also go above and beyond; working with their clients to develop a career path, not just find a job. For employers, Express Employment Professionals provides employment services and workforce solutions, working to improve their workforce beyond just solving their staffing challenges. “I am extremely fortunate to have opportunities to meet, help and serve people,” says Anarissa. “We get a sense of fulfillment not just through the very nature of our job, but also through the ability to give back with numerous volunteer and financial efforts. That is the Express culture!”

SHOPPING & ENTERTAINMENT Loyola marymount university athletics 310.338.7643 | lmulions.com
From the very beginning, LMU has established a history of champions.
Our hometown of Los Angeles has a historic reputation with the Olympics. As the only host city to finish an Olympic Games with a surplus, our 1984 model is often used as an example for success—one that we hope to continue with the LA 2028 Summer Olympics. Hosting a profitable Olympic Games is not our only tie to Olympic history. Loyola Marymount University, an LAX Coastal institution for more than 100 years, has represented Los Angeles and the United States of America in multiple Games to earn recognition for our region. In the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, three student athletes participated: Rachel Riddell and Christine Robinson for women's waterpolo and Reid Priddy, a three-time All-American for men's volleyball, appeared in his first Olympics outing. In 2008 the Olympics headed to Beijing, where Priddy once again represented men's volleyball, with Jeff Stevens for men's baseball and Warren Anderson as an alternate for rowing. Finally, the 2012 30th Olympiad in London featured Priddy as team captain for men's volleyball, leaving us in anticipation as to where LMU—and USA—will place in future games.

Southern California's Bob Hope USO, an independent nonprofit that serves over 200,000 military members and their families each year, celebrated the groundbreaking of their new location at the iconic Theme Building at LAX in December 2017. The new center, expected to open in Spring 2018, will replace the current facility and nearly double the size of the Bob Hope USO at LAX.

The current facility will be removed to make way for a new LAX Automated People Mover, part of LAWA's capital improvements project. The new USO will accommodate an estimated 2.7 million people over the next 20 years. “We host 8,500 service members a month at our LAX center,” said Bob Kurkjian, Executive Director. “This move will modernize the facility and give us ample room to serve the next generation of troops and military families."

wellness & beauty Promoting empowerment among women professionals in the LAX Coastal region.
THE LIFESTYLE GROUP AN LAX COASTAL CHAMBER COMMITTEE The award-winning Lifestyle Group has been celebrating women in business for the past three years. Noticing a rise in women-owned business and a lack of resources for female professionals, the LAX Coastal Chamber originally started Lifestyle to promote relationships, economic empowerment and business exposure to business owners and entrepreneurs in our neighborhood. The engagement was instantaneous, making Lifestyle one of the Chamber's most popular committees and earning it the Outstanding Committee Award at our 2016-2017 Installation Awards Gala, A Summer SoirĂŠe at the Beach.

The Lifestyle Group believes in the importance of creating an alliance of wellbeing for women professionals, and uses this group to build a supportive circle of influence. CoChairs Bobbie Casalino-Lewis and Lu Casillas curate topics to inspire and support attendees in areas of health, wealth, courage and desires. They dive into conversations that are stimulating, provocative, encouraging, educational and fun. And, as an all-inclusive group, they also strongly encourage men to attend so that all can build relationships that extend beyond the Chamber's board room.
maintaining optimal mental and physical well-being, but exercise often loses priority when compared to a busy schedule. Luckily, getting fit doesn't have to mean spending hours at the gym—instead, you can do it right from your office. Just follow this simple exercise routine from Jeff Blair of SoCalSport & Fitness.
The group's 2018 theme surrounds the idea of "Living a 5-Star Lifestyle." With dynamic guest speakers and community leaders, they plan to discuss everything from being the best you, inside and out, to building better business techniques.

The first recorded mention of acupuncture dates back to 100 BCE, from The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine. From the beginning, the guiding theory behind acupuncture's effectiveness was the same—the health benefits of regulating the flow of Qi (pronounced "chee") energy— however, time has evolved acupuncture's techniques. Today, acupuncture is known as a form of alternative medicine where needles are inserted into the body at specific points to stimulate healing. In a 2002 study by the World Health Organization, acupuncture was shown to effectively treat conditions such as pain, arthritis, depression and even allergies, but it's important to be treated by a licensed professional. The staff at Westchester Wellness Center are highly trained, allowing them to treat a range of medical conditions through holistic medicine. From acupuncture to cupping to Tui Na massage, their services are guaranteed to put you on the path to enhanced relaxation and better health.

We are here to not only advocate for a stronger, more efficient business climate, but to also connect our members and residents to local government. Through these discussions, PPC attendees deliberate on the recommended position for the Chamber, which is then sent to the Executive Board and Board of Directors, where it is put to a vote. All positions that pass with a majority vote become policies of the Chamber, leading Chamber staff and leadership to write official position statements to our elected officials and even appear at community hearings to make public comments. As members of the LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce, residents, professionals and business owners are encouraged to become involved in our PPC. ONE LAST LOOK
Behind the colors of the LAX Gateway Pylons Since 2000, the LAX Gateway Pylons have been one of Los Angeles' most beautiful and recognizable public art displays. It's hard not to notice the bright lights from numerous points in Westchester, or while driving down the area's thoroughfares, helping to highlight the beauty of our neighborhood airport and surrounding communities. The distinctive architectural structures welcoming travelers to LAX were part of an overall multi million-dollar construction and landscaping program designed to make the airport more welcoming for the more than 80 million passengers who use the airport annually. Today, the airport is undergoing a Capital Improvement Program aimed at modernizing their grounds for passenger efficiency and convenience, but while the airport has grown, the pylons are still visible to airline passengers from over 3,000 feet in the air. Designed to mimic airport runways and aircraft takeoff, the 1.5-mile lineup of 11 colorful, translucent columns increases in height—ranging from 25 to 60 feet—along Century Boulevard. The group culminates in a "Gateway Circle" of fifteen 100-foot columns at the intersection of Century and Sepulveda. The pylons are structural steel support frames, encased in a layer of translucent, tempered glass. They are part of an overall design developed by a team headed by the architectural firm of Ted Tokio Tanaka in Marina del Rey. Tanaka designed the pylons to pay homage to the power of flight, orienting each pylon skyward to represent an aircraft's takeoff pattern. Pylons is their colors, as each pylon is lit with interior lights from dusk to dawn every day. In 2006, LED (light-emitting diode) technology was installed in each pylon during a major refurbishment of the structures. The LEDs are 75 percent more energy efficient than the original theatrical lighting system. Because LEDs burn less electricity while providing more vibrant hues, LAWA's annual electricity costs for the pylons was cut by 75 percent, down to $18,000 per year. As for the pylon's colors, according to LAWA Public Relations Director Nancy Castles, "lighting artist Paul Tzanetopoulos did the original PUBLIC ART lighting program in 2000, following a juried art program conducted by the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department and Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA). Paul's work was selected, allowing him to curate the colors, frequency and sequencing of the lighting (i.e. how long each color stays up and on which pylons)." "After upgrading all of the lighting mechanisms inside each of the pylons with new, energy efficient LED technology, LAWA construction and maintenance electricians created a new program based on Tzanetopoulos' design but with new colors." The LAWA team also created a new program with colors inspired by the holidays: red, green and white for December, and red, white and blue for Memorial Day, July 4th, September 11 and Veterans' Day. The colors of the pylons are also changed throughout the year to honor specific humanitarian efforts. For Breast Cancer Awareness Day the pylons glow pink, for LA Pride Weekend they represent a brilliant rainbow, and
when local sports teams take home the win—such as when the Lakers won the NBA Championship in 2010—they proudly display the home team's colors. Each year, LAWA also does their part during the worldwide "Earth Hour," where electrical use is discouraged for one hour in March. This is the only hour during the year where the pylons go dark, with LAWA leading by example in Los Angeles' energy conserving efforts. But Tzanetopoulos' influence on LAX did not stop with the pylons. In 2014, LAX began their LAX Central Terminal Area Curbside Appeal and Roadway Improvement Project, updating the entrance to the new Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) that opened in 2013. New canopies and additions to the terminal were highlighted with 91 sculptural light poles and a "light ribbon" along the roadway, all with LED capabilities allowing them the same colorful brilliance of the pylons, built in partnership with AECOM. In 2015, when LAX welcomed athletes to the Los Angeles Special Olympics, Mayor Eric Garcetti worked with LAWA to display a special light show in their honor. The more than one-mile-long stretch was programmed with Special Olympics-inspired colors, showing that our neighborhood airport once again inspires inclusivity through public art. Currently, LAWA states the tentative completion of their Landside Access Modernization Program will be in 2023, so with five years to go we can't wait to see what LAX lights up next. Kirby Israelson
