London Sights: Trafalgar Square and Nelson’s column Trafalgar square and Nelson’s column (which is at the Trafalgar square) are one of the most visited London sights and they are hosted by the beautiful city of Westminster. Let’s begin with some information of the Nelson’s column. William Railton, E. H. Baily and Sir Edwin Landseer. It’s made out of Granite and Bronze. The upper part is made of bronze and the main body is made of granite. It was dedicated to Admiral Horatio Nelson, a flag officer in the royal navy. It was built at 1843 and it was refurbished at 2006. Furthermore it’s between two fountains. Now let’s talk about the Trafalgar square. The Trafalgar square is next to the national gallery. The monument which attracts the most people there is the Nelson’s column for which we talked about earlier. If I visited London I would go to the Trafalgar square for sure to admire the Nelson’s column and enjoy the two fountains. Simon Athanasiou

Madame Tussaud’s is one of the most popular London sights, a wax museum. It’s located in Marylebone Road, London. HISTORY Marie Tussaud was the one who had this great idea and also the talent. By 1835 she had opened a museum in Baker Street, London. Victims and murderers from the French Revolution and some famous people were the biggest part of her exhibition. After her death, her grandson undertook her work. In February 1889 Tussaud's museum was finally sold to a group of businessmen led by Edwin Josiah Poyser. Now it is full of wax sculptures of celebrities, great inventors, presidents, successful athletes, book or even cartoon heroes.

CATEGORIES OF WAX SCULPTURES The basic categories of the wax sculptures and some examples are: Bollywood (Aishwarya Rai) Culture (Stephen Hawking, Albert Einstein) Party (Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig) Music (Rihanna, Michael Jackson) Royals (Queen Elisabeth) Sport (Usain Bolt) World Leaders (Barack Obama) Film (Shrek)

WHY SO MANY PEOPLE LIKE GOING THERE? Going to that museum is an extraordinary experience. Lots of people visit it in order to take photos of themselves with the wax sculptures of their favourite famous people and have fun. They also enjoy multiple activities.

WHAT ELSE TO DO? Except of the rooms with the uncountable sculptures, you shouldn’t miss the Champer of Horror, the Spirit of London Ride and the Behind the Scenes Madame Tussaud’s. But whatever you do, you should definitely visit the 4D Marvel Super Heroes Experience; watch the amazing short film feeling every move of the heroes, every little wind and rain. It will sure be your favourite part!

MY OPINION I think that everyone should add this sight to his must-see agenda. During my visit I felt extremely amazed, especially when I imagined how much talent and skills the creation of a single sculpture needs.

During the early years of Elizabeth’s reign, the English theatrical companies were using hotels’ yards, colleges’ rooms and houses’ living rooms to present their plays. In 1576 James Burbage built a theatre in Shoreditch. This theatre was called “The Globe” and it was the first specially formed theatre in London. In 1596 an argument about the tenancy came up and Burbage started a negotiation to own an abandoned space around the old “Blackfriars” so as to use it as a roofed theatre. Burbage died in February of 1597. In April the tenancy stopped, but the argument was continued for two years. During these two years the company was presenting plays in a theatre called “Curtain Theatre” nearby. In Christmas of 1598 the company searched for a solution, so it payed for a plot near the “Rose Theatre”. To earn enough money and pay for the construction of the theater, the sons of Burbage, Cuthbert and Richard, gave some of the company’s money. Shakespeare was one of the four actors who bought a part of the Globe. Since the beginning of 1599 the theatre was earning much money by presenting many plays of Shakespeare for fourteen years. The Globe Theatre was a round wooden structure. Inside it looked like a modern opera’s theatre. It had three galleries which were protected from the sun and the rain by a roof. About 2000-3000 spectators were giving two or three pennies to have a seat at one of those galleries. The stage was about four-six feet above the ground and had a roof. In front of the stage there was a “yard” without a roof which could contain about 1000 spectators. Some of the spectators could sit on the stage as long as they could pay the expensive tickets. There wasn’t a curtain which opened and closed in the beginning and the end of the play. In the back of the stage there was a wall with two or three doors that were leading in the actors’ dressing rooms. In Shakespeare’s years the stage was described as simple. In 1613, during a play the roof of the theatre caught fire and the whole theatre was burnt. Fortunately the theatre was restructured soon and a ceramic roof was made. Shakespeare had played many times as an actor in the new Globe, but probably had never written any plays to present. The theatre was closed in 1642 because of the beginning of the civil war in England. In 1644 it was destroyed to build houses in its place. The plan for the restructure of the Globe in 20th century began from the American actor, director and producer Sam Wanamaker. Wanamaker visited London for the first time in 1949. 21 years later he created the “Shakespeare Globe Trust” which was a project devoted to the restructure of the theatre and the creation of an education center. Wanamaker died in 1993 after 23 years of research and study about the architecture design of the new Globe according to the first one’s design. The architecture design was finished by an architect called Theo Crosby, three years and six days after Wanamaker’s death. The theatre was inaugurated by the queen of England in 1997. HYDE PARK Hyde Park is one of the eight Royal Parks of London. It covers 350 acres and is visited by millions of Londoners and tourists every year. Hyde Park was created to satisfy a royal passion for hunting. But over the years it became a peaceful place where people have pursued many other pleasures.

THEN‌ Henry VIII (the 8th) acquired Hyde Park from the monks of Westminster Abbey in 1536, where he and his court were often seen there in hunt of deer. It remained a private hunting ground until James I came to the throne and permitted limited access. It was Charles I who changed the nature of the park completely. In 1637 he opened the park to the general public. In 1665, the year of a great disease, many citizens of London left to camp on Hyde Park, in the hope of escaping the disease. Queen Caroline, wife of George II, had extensive renovations carried out and in the 1730s had The Serpentine, a lake of some 11.34 hectares, created. Hyde Park became a venue for national celebrations, such as the fireworks set for the end of the Napoleon War, in 1814.

...AND NOW Hyde Park is a popular film location. In Hyde Park there have been filmed movies such as Johnny English (2003), starring Rowan Atkinson, Natalie Imbruglia and John Malkovich. It is home to a number of famous landmarks including the Serpentine Lake, Speakers' Corner and the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain. The park also offers various recreational activities including open water swimming, boating, cycling, tennis and horse riding. There are also yoga classes and meditation.

BIG BEN - A3 – ΘΕΟΔΟΣΗΣ ΧΑΡΙΤΟΣ – 19\4\2015

HISTORY The tower was completed in 1858 and had its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009, during which celebratory events took place. The tower has become one of the most prominent symbols of the United Kingdom and is often in the establishing shot of films set in London. OFFICIAL NAME The tower is officially known as the Elizabeth Tower, renamed as such to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II. The tower holds the second largest four-faced chiming clock in the world (Minneapolis City Hall being the first). ORIGIN The origin of the name Big Ben is not known, although two different theories exist: 1) The first is that is was named after Sir Benjamin Hall, the first commissioner of works, a large man who was known affectionately in the house as "Big Ben". 2) The second theory is that it was named after a heavyweight boxing champion at that time, Benjamin Caunt. Also known as "Big Ben", this nickname was commonly bestowed in society to anything that was the heaviest in its class.

It includes various exhibits, like for example sculptures, paintings, ancient jewelry and clothes, photographs, books, designs and traditional, local objects from many different parts of the world. There are exhibits from Asia, Europe, North America and North Africa. In general, the museum’s exhibits are both ancient and modern. Namely, it exhibits ancient art objects, like the exhibits of the Asian Department and more modern and contemporary exhibits, like certain paintings, drawings, designs and photographs. In other words, the Victoria and Albert museum is an art museum, the exhibits of which are about the art and civilization of many parts of the world and it mostly appeals to the lovers of the art.

COVENT GARDEN English project Zotou Elizabeth Professor: Christine Drakopoulou Covent Garden is an area in London on the eastern fringes of the West End. Covent Garden is a fruit and vegetable market. You can find fantastic things in it and it is real well worth a visit. There are a lot of others smaller areas (Covent Garden is one of them) that are worth exploring such as the traffic-free Covent Garden market piazza, The Opera Quarter, St Martin's Courtyard, Seven Dials, Neal's Yard, and Floral Street.

The O2 Arena (named also as North Greenwich Arena in the 2012 Summer Olympics and 2012 Summer Paralympics) is a multi-purpose indoor arena located in the centre of The O2, a large building in Greenwich, London. It has the second-highest seating capacity of any indoor buildingin the UK, behind the Manchester Arena, but is the world's busiest music arena. (The Manchester Arena was before the O2 Arena) The closest underground station to the arena is the North Greenwich station on the Jubilee line. I suggest visiting the O2 Arena because: Famous stars perform there. You can enjoy great basketball matches. You can be in the one of the biggest arenas in the world (14th).
