PROBLEMS Most college students find it expensive and unhealthy to eat outside. Many of them choose to cook by themselves. However, they find cooking is sort of time-killing. That makes they always feel tangled when deciding wether to eat outside or at home.

KEY WORDS Time Money Health

BENCHMARKS TIME - FOOD DEDELIVERY

MONEY - FOOD COUPONS

HEALTH - WEIGHT LOSS RECIPES

They only care about single problems but have not think about “time, money, health“ in a whole system.

FRAMING QUESTIONS Do you like cooking by yourself? What’s your shopping experiences in a grocery in the previous months? How often do you go to groceries? Size... How many times will you eat outside in a week? Why will you choose to eat outside or cook by yourself? What are the factors you will take into consideration? Which kind of food do you cook most of time? Why? What’s your eating habits? Which flavor do you prefer? Are there any problems for you to cook by yourselves? Will you read recipes? Are they easy to follow? What are your idealistic recipes? How long do you think it is reasonable to cook for a meal?

Time, price, health are important factors to influece one’s diet choice.

GIE HENDRIE

COOKING FEVER

TING ZHOU, CHINESE STUDENT I’m 22 and a freshman in Product Design. I started my life here three months ago. At the beginning, I found it hard to get used to the local flavor, like cheese and may, and to buy anything I wanted to eat in American groceries. I like cooking. Before coming here, I always cook by myself. However, since I began studying here, I often eat instant food at home and eat bread or snakes outside. The reason is that preparing the ingredients, cooking and tidying up always kill a lot of time and eating outside is expensive for me.

GIA LOGAN, LOCAL STUDENT I’m 22 and a freshman in Illustration Design. I am living with my parents. I spend half a week eating at home. Only when the day is full of classes will I choose to eat outside. Because eating outside is unhealthy and expensive. I do care about my health. I need a strict proportion of nutrition for my diet: 70% vegetables, 20% meats, 10% grains. I never eat MSG and prefer organic food. When time allows, I will not hesitate to cook by myself; My favorite grocery is Trader Joe’s. When shopping, I care about the price range and quality of food.

GIE HENDRIE

COOKING FEVER

JOHN WHITE, LOCAL STUDENT I’m 26 and a graduate student in Graphic Design. I usually order food delivery and eat it for whole day’s diet or cook instant food. I can cook but he thinks it a waste of time. If the recipe is simple enough and constrain the time expense into half an hour, I will try it. I do not care about the nutrition of food too much.

DISCOVERIES Time, price, health are the most importantfactors. How to present the recipes to make it easy to understand and follow is very important. It helps to reduce users’ perceived duration. Using grading system to grade the quality and the accuracy of duration for a recipe. It helps users to find the most efficient and useful recipes. Besides, it also encourage the users to share the most valuable recipes. Since the duration is the most important, we can divide the recipes according to the duration. We can attach the destination to the ingredients to help users quickly find the ingredients. We can use live videos to make the cooking process more interesting. Attract users who love cooking, intrigue new cooks, build a community to communicate and share cooking experience.

GIE HENDRIE

COOKING FEVER

BIG IDEAS The most important task of this app is to simplify the process of preparing ingredients, cooking and tidying.

TIME Prepare ingredients Ingredients attached with destination Give a eating schedule at the beginning of a week Recipes with short durations; may be divided by duration Recipes with good layout and clear visual presentation

MONEY Grocery shopping suggestions

HEALTH Recipes with clear nutrition portation

INSIGHTS AND BIG IDEAS People do not cook frequently because they think intuitively that cooking is a waste of time. So the key point comes to how to change people’s intuitive judgement on cooking and guide them to build a cooking habit.

HYPOTHESIS If I build a system to record each cooking time and try to make people revise unnecessary time wasted on cooking and build a community where users cook share their dishes’ photos, time-saving tips and compete on grades, people will become aware of time expense of cooking and develop interests and motivations to keep on cooking.

Timer & Revision & Monthly Digest Grading System Community - Share tips and post photos Comments on Recipes Shopping List

Timer is useful for a part of targeted users who really care about one who like limitless things and need relaxing during cooking. Different people have different thoughts on time expense.

There is a contradiction on cooking that people want to save time ing should be relaxing.

Different users focus on different features of an app. If they think ant to them, then they will continue to use this app.

Focus on user cases related to cooking. Most of them just want to so don’t make this app become a burden for them to cook.

USER TESTING PROS The vision about time-saving is great. Incorporating many popular features makes me feel familiar. Voice assistant is helpful.

CONS Too many steps to go through before ordering a food delivery. The entry of “Favorites” should be apparent. Some information is pointless for me, like how many ingredients are in this recipe. I only care about how much time it will spend. The Profile Page is not clear enough. There are too much information meaningless for me. I don’t want them appear in my proflie.

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

USER TESTING How will my preferece choices influence the recipe filter? What’s the relationships between preference settings, recipe recommendations and shopping list? Why do I need to pay for the ingredients in shopping list? When I sign up, there are no recipes in the landing page. I don’t know what to do next?

GIE HENDRIE

COOKING FEVER

The hierarchy of landing page is confusing. The buttom at the bottom right is misleading. I will always try to tap it. How ever, it is only a food delivery button. I only need to use it once a week. On the landing page, you offer the feature of filter the recipes through time tag. However, you only offer three recipes for each meal. Cooking time of each recipe is clear and easy to view. This feature otherwise make your app overburden.

REVISION Too many freedom will make users confused about where they are, what they are doing and where they will go. The workflows is vague. User’s path will be hard to catch. Thus, their needs and seamless user experiences will be difficult to realize.

USER TESTING ABOUT WORKFLOWS The workflows of choosing preference, generating shopping list, and viewing recipes on landing page are confusing. I don’t know why I reach to some pages, like shoppinglist. How the information or features in these pages work on me.

ABOUT INTERFACE The font size is too tiny to be readable. Some labelings don’t make sence.

GIE HENDRIE

COOKING FEVER

REVISION Since there are three main workflows in my app, how to diffrentiate and connect them is the most important thing. It’s a big challenge for my project. To realize the UX Vision of my project, there comes the 4th version.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNT

09 CONCLUSION

IXD 1 | MAGG

WHAT I HAVE LEARNT

For these project, I have gone through large amount of user interviews, user testings, and class critiques. User interviews always made me feel confident about my project while class critiques made me feel frustrated. Then, I found that it was because I always explained my design intention previously to users. It made users more easily to agree on my design solutions. It is not a right method to implement a user testing. Oppositely, classmates always give me different perspectives, new insights and inspirations. They drive me to think comprehensively and find reasonable design basis. The process was hard but taught me a lot.
