Designer Ashley Campbell layered bold textures and patterns for the great room of a home in Cherry Hills Village. or Ashley Campbell, one of the best things about being a designer is having the opportunity to develop enduring relationships with clients; to come along for the ride—and the challenges— as their tastes and lifestyles evolve. One such case is a client Campbell started working with 12 years ago. “I knew him when he was single, when he was dating his future wife and now that they’re married with two young kids,” she says. “I’ve been lucky enough to have built a rapport with them over the years, so I have a good understanding of their style.” So good, in fact, that before the couple made an offer on their home in Cherry Hills Village, they asked Campbell to tour it with them. The 18,000-square-foot residence had a lot going for it: extensive custom millwork, recessed and coffered ceilings, and plenty of living and entertaining space. But despite its good bones, the house needed a face-lift. Its traditional finishes “really didn’t speak to the couple’s style,” Campbell says of the orange-hued wood floors and dark walls. To personalize the home, Campbell worked with builder Kirk McConnell to make some big changes. In the kitchen, they replaced the heavily patterned granite countertops with a subdued gray Caesarstone, added a Calacatta-marble mosaic backsplash and crowned the range with a custom zinc hood. An unfinished portion of the basement was transformed into a spa sanctuary with an exercise studio, a massage room, a dry sauna and a serene bath. And a bedroom suite became an office with a cozy sitting area and custom built-in bookshelves. “It was a large project, and we were on a pretty tight schedule,” McConnell recalls, “but I liked the challenge of making it all come together.” luxesource.com / 255

Campbell paired black-and-white table lamps with a colorful Ming Dynasty buffet in the dining room. “The two styles play nicely together,” says the designer, who lent texture to the space with a nailhead-striped jute-burlap wallcovering by Schumacher. Lee Industries host chairs and settees, slipcovered with an outdoor Sunbrella fabric from Pindler, gather around the table. The ceiling fixture is by Currey & Company; the artwork is by Wendover Art Group.

To inject the updated spaces with a more contemporary vibe, Campbell painted the walls light-beige hues and gave the wood floors a rich chocolate finish—but she left the original millwork untouched. “Once we changed the wall color and flooring, the existing wood paneling and moldings felt more interesting and seemed to work with where we were headed,” she explains. That direction was to points around the world. “This couple is extremely well-traveled,” the designer says, “and we wanted to reflect their experiences with a global palette that’s not quite bohemian but very grounded. The wife has a strong interest in the convergence of Eastern and Western worlds, and the husband’s Indian heritage played an equally significant role. We wanted to pay homage to his culture’s styles and traditions.” 256 / luxesource.com

During this process, the couple’s trust in Campbell yielded great rewards. “These clients were not afraid of pattern, texture or color, so I really got to play,” she says. Inspiration for the great room, for example, was drawn from draperies made with a Schumacher fabric sporting a French Polynesian motif that Campbell embellished with intricate beadwork and fringe. A Kyle Bunting hair-on-hide rug came next, then a pair of traditional wingback seats and two leggy campaign-style chairs that serve as foils to hefty black tufted-leather sofas. The look, Campbell acknowledges, is a bold move. “It’s a departure from the traditional design practice of keeping the main pieces of upholstery in neutral, safe fabrics,” she says. “We reversed the formula for higher contrast.”

One corner of the great room incorporates a bar, which Campbell appointed with Arteriors iron-andwood stools. “They tuck away and just sort of disappear,” she says. On the other side of the bar wall, an original painting of a Kuba cloth hangs above a wood chest by Global Views; the metal bowl is an antique.

Piatra Gray Caesarstone countertops play off the light-colored kitchen cabinetry and complement a Calacatta-marble mosaic backsplash. The custom zinc hood is by Weld-Wright Fabricators. Currey & Company’s Broxton Orb chandeliers suspend above the island, which is surrounded by Lee Industries bar chairs upholstered with the brand’s Kilimanjaro Onyx fabric.

RH’s Kinetic chandeliers give the husband’s office an industrial edge. A desk by Theodore Alexander plays off a Lexington sofa and a kilim-upholstered ottoman by Jatex International. To lighten the dark space, Campbell worked with builder Kirk McConnell to replace the fireplace’s original marble surround with a pale Caesarstone. The rug is by Jaipur Living.

Campbell kept the existing damask wallcovering in the master bedroom, where a tufted Cisco Brothers bench and a Hickory White bed rest on a Loloi rug. On both sides, Currey & Company lamps sit on Gabby end tables. A Made Goods chandelier hangs above the bed, while a Mr. Brown London pendant suspends over two Lee Industries chairs and a Surya ottoman near the windows. The drapery fabric is Schumacher.

The contrasts are no less striking in the dining room, where regal high-back chairs upholstered with white linen preside over one side of a weathered-wood dining table; opposite them, low-slung settees are slipcovered with a washable outdoor fabric. To accent the room’s colorful Ming Dynasty buffet, Campbell created a daring patternplay by topping the piece with a pair of urn-shaped lamps embellished with a black-and-white decorative scroll motif. In the music room, formal architectural details—like an elegant cast-limestone fireplace and a coffered ceiling— mix with more casual finds like a pieced kilim rug, one of many items in the home that nods to the husband’s Indian heritage. An antique leather coffee table, a deconstructed French armchair and a faux-bois piano bench with a shearling top complete the look. “I like the idea of something super casual mixed with a regal baby grand piano,” Campbell says. The designer’s deployment of hundreds of patterns throughout the house may seem audacious, but her selections hew to a simple high-contrast palette of black and camel; occasional pops of rich red, green and soft gray “keep things from feeling too dark and moody,” Campbell says. Some motifs, like the stair runner’s gray windowpane pattern, are inspired by classic menswear—a nod to the husband’s tailored style—while others are tribal. “We certainly didn’t stick to one part of the world,” Campbell says of the mix. “We’re all over the map, which the clients love.” luxesource.com / 263
