INTRODUCTION This exhibition seeks to explore the issue of loneliness in today’s society through the eyes of international and Taiwanese artists using a variety of media, including photography, installation and video. Encountering loneliness is unique for each individual; at times it can be seen as a struggle, void of communication, a sense of separateness resulting in isolation, or as a natural and integral part of being human. The works embody the dichotomy of loneliness and solitude, and reveal personal experiences of the artists dealing with diverse aspects of loneliness. Since loneliness is generally considered as a passive state, the participating artists adopt an active approach to the issue – using creativity, reflection, creation and aspiration for self-actualization in an attempt to achieve disalienation in a postmodern world. Towards that end, gallery space would act as a place where ritualized "healing" of loneliness is performed.

2010 Video projection (color, sound) 04:56 min. Goran Škofić, an established Croatian artist, whose work is based on extracting various sequences from real-life by placing them into a new context through image manipulation, examines loneliness refracted through the prism of isolation in an imaginative world where one is confronted with the numbing nothingness. His video installation depicts a figure that is twitching and squealing, surrounded by white, blank oblivion. The figure illustrates a manipulated individual, who by erasing the context and circumstances is left alone in the world. Tormented by its isolation, the figure is only capable of producing shrieks that no one can hear, since it is encircled by the void of communication.

GORAN ŠKOFIĆ

CONTROLLED Goran Škofić

Social control, manipulation, the shortcomings of the body, the social aspects and absurdities of everyday life are the ever-present themes of his approach. His works include photographic and video collages, video performances, film and sound, spatial installations. THIRTY ONE Maja-Iskra Vilotjević

2013 Video Projections (color, sound) 02:37 min & 19:23 min

Maja-Iskra Vilotijević was born in 1981 in former Yugoslavia. She studied Landscape Architecture in Belgrade, Vienna and Valencia, where she earned the degree of Master of Science in 2007. Vilotijević currently lives and works in Vienna at the interface between film, dialogue and knowledge transfer.

MAJA-ISKRA VILOTJEVIĆ

In the video installation by Maja-Iskra Vilotijević the two central characters represent the inner struggle that is experienced while feeling lonely. Artist’ view on loneliness creates an eerie allusion of constant suffocation and the perpetual inevitability of facing the most common attributes of loneliness, which is depression and hopelessness. This video transforms the common monologue that occurs deep within each individual into a demonstrative, omnipotent dialogue.

UNTITLED FROM THE SERIES NO MONUMENTS WHILE TRAVELING Mario Pućić 2013 Chromogenic Color print 40cm x 40cm

No monuments while traveling is a series of photographs by Mario Pućić collected at the locations that are in any way isolated. In a minimalistic setting, Pućić provides a narrative through his anti-topographical approach in which the discourse of travelling is stripped away from its form and function. Artist takes the individual on an isolated journey where existentialism and loneliness cross their paths.

MARIO PUĆIĆ

Mario Pućić was born in 1984 in Rijeka, Croatia. He is studying Cinematography and the photography at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb. Pućić exhibited nationally and internationally in museums and galleries such as Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb and o. T. Projektraum in Berlin.

2013 Art Book 20 cm x 20 cm

Maja Jelušić’s art book represents a diary of text messages, which were written every day at a certain hour, but were never sent to anyone. They are introspective monologues resulting from the desire for dialogue and exchange of feelings, meticulous notes offsetting the modern communication in which pictures increasingly prevail.

MAJA JELUŠIĆ

COME ON DON'T LET IT Maja Jelušić

She accomplished a few pieces of silicone series, such as “My Bastard Son”,”Faces”,”Phantom Limbs”. In 2012, her award-winning work “My Bastard Son” series has been commented as”sharp and naked, which in the eyes of female creator causes even more dizziness.”

MY BASTARD HEIR Chin-Yun Kuo

2012 Silicone, Mixed Media, Video Projection 200 x 120 x 80 cm In Cetus Kuo-ChinYun’s work the disunion of solitude and loneliness is portrayed through her creational process where she uses silicone as a medium. She views silicone as a metaphorical substitute for human skin, as it is the first medium one uses to connect with the outside world. She outlines a shape of a human body with needles and thread in order to create her bastard with the most meticulous and precise care. Her Bastard Heir therefore reveals intrapersonal motives towards solitude which are guided by the ongoing creational process.

SHIH YI YANG

Shih Yi Yang was born in Hsinchu in Taiwan in 1985, where she currently lives and works. Most of her works are subtle and created by ordinary materials(memo paper, dust, cans). MURMURING Shih Yi Yang

They are alienating themselves in order to gain meaningless approval via social networks. The figure in the video is aware of the challenging times that are happening in Taiwan, but is alone in that matter, as everyone else is blinded by their own selfishness.

FACE THE LONELINESS Zhong Jinpei

Face the Loneliness by Zhong Jinpei follows his journey through different faces of loneliness. When he suddenly left the familiar and the creative environment in order to move to a different city, it brought a sense of inner loneliness. His art work depicts the embroidering of the words Face the Loneliness on a towel that he performed for four months, and in which he found comfort. To him it effectively improved the mood of loneliness in his mind. What once seemed like a real struggle, he found that through the direct confrontation with it, the feeling of loneliness was mitigated.

Zhong Jinpei was born in 1986 in Yangjiang (Canton), China. In 2009 he received his BFA from the Centeral Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China. He lives and works in Yangjiang. INTRODUCTION

Back in London, I was asked by a friend whether or not I could accompany him to the River Thames. He wanted to throw away a collection of poems which he had been written to a person for years but never sent out. On the phone, I was silent for a while. The massive love he had been carrying for so long would be cast away into the river. I was too overwhelmed by the beauty to utter a word. 2014, the Valentine's Year. Before the spring arrives, I dream to make a river drifting with love poems in eslite xin-yi bookstore. Now I bring it to NCKU. - 20 -

The presence of traveling is ever-changing, due to things happened during the “traveling” entails changeability and fluidity. “Taiwanese Odyssey: A glimpse of collective memories” includes 5 different mediums and point-of views, to present the artists’ memories of traveling. The way the pieces were displayed in the exhibition is to correlate to the compilation of memories in the back of one’s mind, as how the memories are minor, yet non-removable.
