Brewster speech

In one word, my first impression of this year’s recipient: Bold. Definition: “Not hesitating or fearful in the face of actual or possible rebuff”. Our first encounter was virtual. Through repeated emails she patiently, persistently, and enthusiastically asked questions about the PCOM graduate program and about possible graduate assistantships. Or any employment. She was open to doing any task. Her interests were in Costume Design. Bold. She took on the duties of Shop Supervisor for the Division of Theatre Costume Shop immediately upon entry into her brand new graduate program. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Spring Dance Concert 2011, Robin Hood: Marian’s Revenge, Jake’s Women, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Memoir of a Mythomaniac: The True Story of a Compulsive Liar (or Tallulah Dies), Spring Dance Concert 2012. All of these shows were costume designed by the recipient of this award in little more than one year’s time and all while maintaining good standing in the PCOM graduate program. Bold. Michelle Obama states, “Your success will be determined by your own confidence and fortitude”. This recipient, in her work and her presence, displays this essence of this phrase. Oh yes…another definition of Bold from Dictionary.com: “Striking or conspicuous to the eye”. Her hair color is totally natural. The 2012 Department of Communication Award for Graduate Creative Achievement goes to: Christine Waxstein.
